Preview: Liberty (1-1) at Mercury (2-1)

The Phoenix Mercury will be without guard Diana Taurasi for Tuesday night's home game against the New York Liberty.

Taurasi is suspended for one game for a flagrant foul-2 during Friday's win at San Antonio, when she used her forearm to hit Stars forward Dearica Hamby in the back of the head during the second quarter.

Officials originally assessed a technical foul before the play was upgraded to the more serious violation, which calls for a suspension without pay.

New York (1-1) is also down a key player -- and will be for the rest of the season. The Liberty lost starting guard Brittany Boyd to a torn Achilles' tendon on Thursday night in a loss to Minnesota.

"You have to move on. This league doesn't stop," Liberty coach Bill Laimbeer said. "There are no days off. We're going to war with what we have."

Bria Hartley, acquired in an offseason trade with the Washington Mystics, is expected to step into the starting lineup Tuesday night at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

The Mercury (2-1) could opt to start the game with two point guards, with Leilani Mitchell (11.0 points per game off the bench) joining Danielle Robinson. Taurasi, who needs 145 points to become the WNBA career scoring leader, has struggled this season, shooting 21.2 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from 3-point range.

The marquee matchup will be in the post, with New York's Tina Charles battling Phoenix's Brittney Griner, who has posted consecutive double-doubles. The 6-foot-9 Griner is second in the league in scoring at 23.3 points per game and has made 20 of 27 shots in the past two games.

She is being asked to be a bigger part of the offense this season after Phoenix replaced everybody but her and Taurasi from last season's roster.

"I keep telling her, she can be as good as she wants, as long as she is ready to play in that regard," Phoenix coach Sandy Brondello said. "She has really good guards around her. They are feeding her the ball at the right time. "

Charles led the WNBA in scoring and rebounding last season. She battled illness last week and is averaging only 9.0 points and 7.0 rebounds through two games. She won the matchups with Griner last season, averaging 26.7 points and 11.0 rebounds in three games against Phoenix, and Griner was at 10.0 and 5.7.

"We know Griner is a big part of Phoenix," Laimbeer said of Tuesday's matchup, "so we put a couple wrinkles in defensive-wise to see what we can do there."

New York is starting a two-game road trip that will end at the Seattle Storm on Friday. Phoenix stays at home for a game against the Dallas Wings on Saturday.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. (AP) Sylvia Fowles had 21 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks to help the Minnesota Lynx beat the Connecticut Sun 80-78 on Tuesday night.

Seimone Augustus added 16 points, including nine in the third quarter, for the Lynx (4-0).

Morgan Tuck hit a 3-pointer from the wing to pull Connecticut to 80-78 with 19.8 seconds left and Lindsay Whalen missed two free throws at the other end. After a timeout, Connecticut worked the ball around but a jump ball was called with 2.2 seconds left. The Sun gained possession but weren't able to get off a shot.

Maya Moore added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists for Minnesota, which is ranked second in the AP power poll. Rebekkah Brunson grabbed seven rebounds to move into fourth on the all-time WNBA list.

Jasmine Thomas made a career-high five 3-pointers and scored 18 points for 11th-ranked Connecticut (0-3). Jonquel Jones added 16 points and Tuck finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Minnesota has won 21 straight games in the month of May since 2012.

LIBERTY 69, MERCURY 67

PHOENIX (AP) - Epiphanny Prince hit a go-ahead jumper with 4.5 seconds left and the Liberty held off the Mercury.

Prince dribbled down the clock and used two high screens to sink the jumper from the wing. After a timeout, Leilani Mitchell drove to the basket but her shot was blocked by Sugar Rodgers.

Prince was 10 of 14 from the field, including four 3-pointers, and finished with 24 points. Tina Charles added 22 points and 11 rebounds for New York (2-1), which is ranked fourth in the AP power poll.

Phoenix (2-2) struggled offensively for much of the game without star Diana Taurasi. She was serving a one-game suspension after an incident in last Friday's game against San Antonio. She was called for a technical foul during the game but the league office ruled it a level two flagrant foul.

New York led by 15 points with 2:47 left in the third quarter but Phoenix closed on a 12-0 run and led 67-62 with 2:51 left. Prince hit a 3-pointer and Kia Vaughn a hook shot to tie it with 1:42 left to set up the exciting finish.

Brittney Griner led Phoenix with 19 points and six blocks.

13) Washington Nationals are only current division leader in the major leagues who were in the playoffs last season. Lot of upheaval early this year.

12) Why would you catch a home run at a big league ballgame and throw it back on the field? That bothers me every time I see it; you catch a home run, keep the damn thing or give it to a little kid.

Speaking of home runs, Cincinnati’s Amir Garrett has allowed 10 homers in his last 25.1 IP, which is not good.

11) Nationals 10, Mariners 1— From Justin Havens on Twitter: Seattle’s Christian Bergman is the first big league pitcher since 1950 to allow 14+ hits, 10+ runs in a game, without striking anyone out. Much of the damage against Bergman came during a very steady rain, but still, hard to believe he isn’t on his way back to AAA as you read this.

10) Xavier got great news Tuesday; star guard Trevon Bluiett will be back with the Musketeers this winter; decisions like this turn teams from marginal contenders to top 25 teams, with an outside shot to make the Final Four.

9) Mets 9, Padres 3— For the third time in their last four games, San Diego’s starting pitcher allowed 5+ runs in the first inning. Hell of a job GM AJ Preller is doing— he went to Cornell, so of course he is qualified to run a major league baseball team.

Meanwhile the manager Preller fired in San Diego two years ago, Bud Black, has the Colorado Rockies in first place. Black went to San Diego State.

8) Baseball oddity last night: Michael Conforto is the first Met leadoff hitter EVER to drive in three runs in the first inning of a game.

Conforto homered to lead off the game, then when the Mets batted around, he knocked in two more runs in his next AB.

7) SLS Hotel/Casino was sold this week to the owners of the Grand Sierra in Reno. SLS has the smallest hotel room I’ve ever seen— I was laughing when I first checked in at how small it was, but SLS is a cool place with lot of good food choices. Not much of a sportsbook, though.

6) If you see the Progressive Insurance commercial where the guys are in a man cave watching football, the game on that TV is from the USFL around 30 years ago— Jm Kelly playing for the Houston Gamblers, against the Memphis Showboats (I think it is Memphis).

If companies use NFL highlights for commercials, they have to pay for them. Old USFL footage is apparently free, even though Donald Trump owned one of the teams (NJ Generals).

5) Over the last seven years, Oregon’s basketball team is 33-15 against the spread when getting points in a conference game— Vanderbilt is 27-13-1 over the last four years as an SEC underdog.

4) Since joining the WCC, BYU is 2-11 against the spread in WCC tournament games; 2-6 when a favorite, 0-5 when an underdog.

3) Odd fact of the day: 18% of the world’s milk comes from India, making India the largest supplier of milk/butter in the world. They said it on Pawn Stars; it must be true.

2) Cavaliers 112, Celtics 99— Cleveland leads this series 3-1.

1) Bad news for my right thumb; Odell Beckham Jr got a huge deal with Nike this week, meaning there will be a flood of commercials with the Giants’ WR this season and in coming years, which means increased use of the mute button on my remote and/or simply changing channels.

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) Elena Delle Donne had 21 points and eight rebounds in her return to Chicago and the Washington Mystics beat the Sky 82-67 on Wednesday.

The 2015 MVP asked to be traded in the offseason after four seasons with the Sky. She opened the scoring with a turnaround jumper from the free throw line and finished 7 of 15 from the floor.

Tierra Ruffin-Pratt added 15 points and 10 rebounds for Washington (2-2.

Cappie Pondexter led Chicago (1-3) with 17 points and 10 assists.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Marissa Coleman made five 3-pointers and scored 19 points and Indiana overcame a 14-point halftime deficit to beat Los Angeles.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……..

13) Dodgers beat St Louis 2-1 in 13 innings late Tuesday night, but Cardinals tied the game in the 9th inning in an odd way. Clayton Kershaw was going for a complete game shutout but threw a wild pitch with a man on second and Randall Grichuk scored all the way from second with the tying run. Don’t see that more than a couple of times a year.

12) That game Tuesday started the Cardinals out on a 47-game in 48-day stretch that takes them up to the All-Star break. Has to be a makeup game in there somewhere, since teams generally aren’t allowed to play more than 20 consecutive days.

11) They had a 3:12 rain delay in Atlanta Tuesday nite; with non-division opponents only visiting a city once a year, teams don’t want to have to play doubleheaders, so they wait the rain out and finish the game when they can, which in this case was close to 2am.

10) If you’re trying to develop young pitchers, like the Milwaukee Brewers are, is it smart to have your AAA farm team in the high altitude of Colorado Springs?

Arizona, Colorado, Milwaukee, San Diego and the Mets all have their AAA teams in high altitude cities.

9) North Carolina’s 6-10 Tony Bradley scored 7.1 pts/game in 14.6 minutes per game, but he is bolting to the NBA, UNC’s first one/done player since 2007 (Brandan Wright).

8) Most overused word in English language these days: “process”. If ballplayers don’t know what to say during an interview, they “trust the process”- its become a cliche.

7) Former Duke guard Frank Jackson had a stress reaction in his foot last winter at Duke but reportedly played pain-free through the season, but decided to have surgery on the foot now to begin the rehabilitation process- he is expected to be back by late July, but summer league is in early July.

Unless the kid got a promise from an NBA team that they will draft him, what on earth was he thinking, signing with an agent? That prevented him from going back to school, having the operation on Duke’s dime, rehabbing all summer and then playing for the Blue Devils next winter.

6) Purdue’s chances of making the Final Four next spring went down the drain when big man Caleb Swanigan stayed in the NBA Draft. Matt Painter is suspect as a game coach, so they probably wouldn’t have made it anyway, but having Swanigan gave them an advantage.

5) All-time, there have been 18,988 major league baseball players; Houston’s new backup catcher Juan Centeno became the 875th all-time Astro this week.

4) Colorado’s Charlie Blackmon has 44 RBI, most in the major leagues and he bats leadoff— part of that is because Colorado has sacrificed 22 times (most in MLB) this year, giving him lot of guys in scoring position when he bats.

Blackmon has come to bat with a guy on 3rd base 15 times this year (T2 in MLB), also 15 times with a man on second base (most in MLB). Makes it easier to get a lot of RBI that way.

3) Phillies were 12-12 on May 1st; they are 3-17 since then, with all three wins in games started by Jeremy Hellickson- they’ve lost their last 15 games not started by Hellickson.

2) If/when David Ortiz gets in the Hall of Fame and I think he will, then Edgar Martinez has to get in, too, since that would eliminate the anti-DH bias. Playing in Seattle shouldn’t work against him; Ortiz played in the eastern media spotlight, Martinez didn’t.

Martinez had a career on-base percentage of .418, he hit .312 with 309 homers. A great hitter.

1) Eagles’ QB Carson Wentz spent 10 days in LA this spring with QB gurus Adam Dedeaux and Tom House (of baseball fame), to improve his throwing mechanics, I guess. Doug Pederson is the Eagles’ coach, a former NFL QB and apparently he wasn’t all that happy Wentz did that.

Preview: Wings (1-1) at Stars (0-3)

If the San Antonio Stars are going to move out of the bottom of the WNBA, the first step is winning games at home.

That effort continues when the Stars host the Dallas Wings on Thursday in a Lone Star shootout at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

It's a matchup of two of the WNBA's youngest teams in terms of age and experience. Dallas features five rookies, including three first-round picks.

San Antonio (0-3) has lost nine straight home games dating to the end of the 2016 season and is without its top draft pick, NCAA Division I career scoring champion Kelsey Plum (left ankle) and last season's top draft choice, Moriah Jefferson (right knee soreness).

Star guard Kayla McBride, fresh off a trip to the championship series in the Turkish League and a cross-Atlantic Ocean trip back to the Alamo City, will get her first start of the season for San Antonio after coming off the bench to score 14 points in 26 minutes in its 78-72 home loss to Phoenix on Sunday.

It was McBride's first game for the Stars since a left foot injury sidelined her last July. She was averaging a career-high 17.1 points per game last season before the injury.

"It was a good feeling to be on the court tonight," McBride said. "I was really happy to be back in San Antonio. I was excited to put that uniform on, it didn't really matter how tired I was, I was happy to be out there with my teammates."

San Antonio will also be bolstered off the bench by veteran center Monique Curry, who is its leading scorer (20.7 per game) despite not being a starter.

"Being around 12 years, I know younger players, they're quicker, they're faster, but I like to think I'm a little bit smarter than they are," Currie said. "I can be more efficient if I need to be. Just finding ways to use the least amount energy to produce the most effectiveness is the goal."

Dallas (1-1) looks for their second overall win and second road victory of the season after losing 89-87 at home to Minnesota on Saturday despite 22 points from guard Skylar Diggins-Smith and 15 from rookie guard Allisha Gray, one of the Wings' two draft picks from South Carolina, the NCAA national champion.

Dallas has decided it will take its chances this season with youth and ride the success of its five selections in April's WNBA draft. No team since the Minnesota Lynx in 2000 had kept so many first-year draft picks on a roster.

"I love this situation because all these young players are so competitive," Wings forward Glory Johnson said. "They push me. I'm used to being on a team with a whole bunch of older players. So it's good for me."

In Dallas' season-opening road win over Phoenix on May 14, No. 10 overall pick Kaela Davis came off the bench to lead all scorers with 20 points. Gray, the No. 4 overall pick and Davis' South Carolina teammate, was the only Dallas starter to score in double digits.

"You just have to focus on what you do best," Davis said. "You just have to think of what's the best way I can handle this situation. It's just one big mesh that we're all just trying to figure out as time goes on."

Even with the season-opening victory at Phoenix, the Wings have lost eight of their past 10 road games.

"Working toward a championship is what we're looking at this year, especially with the chemistry of players that we have," Dallas coach Fred Williams said.
