    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

    — Giants/Arizona’s first five games all went over the total.

    — Pirates started season with no one on DL for first time since 1991.

    — Tennessee Volunteers have six new assistant football coaches this year; lot of times, that means the head coach is on the hot seat.

    — Kid in SouthPoint Casino had a Tim Tebow Mets’ jersey on; why?????

    — Mets’ pitcher Seth Lugo has a torn UCL, bad news for the Metropolitans.

    — Dodgers’ pitcher Rich Hill has blister problems (again), is already on the DL.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Just another day in the desert……..

    13) Had the good fortune to meet Brent Musburger Friday here at the SouthPoint Casino, where he has a daily radio show. He was kind enough to give me a few minutes as we talked football and his new radio gig. Very nice man.

One thing; Mr Musburger is 78 years old; he does his two-hour radio show standing up. I’m pretty sure I’ve never stood up for two consecutive hours. Ever.

    12) There seems to be a bowling tournament here every day; lot of bowlers around. One guy had one of his bowling balls fall out of his bag in the parking lot Monday and was chasing it down a hill. Most bowlers are not great athletes. Strong thumbs, though.

    11) There is also a cheerleading competition here this weekend, which means dozens and dozens of teenage girls are here. And their moms, which is much better.

That said, if I had a teenage daughter, the last place on this planet she would spend the weekend was here in America’s Favorite City, much less in a casino.

Nothing quite as uplifting as seeing a young couple drag their four kids into the sports book last night for dinner. “What does par-lay mean, daddy?” Oy.

    10) Marlins 7, Mets 2— Must’ve been cold in the Big Apple last night; Giancarlo Stanton was dressed like Bob Hayes in the Ice Bowl at Lambeau Field in 1967, when Cowboys-Packers played in sub-zero temps for the NFL title. He did not look like he was having fun.

    9) A young person posted on Twitter this week that Tony Romo is the Cowboys’ best-ever QB; have to excuse him, he probably never saw Roger Staubach play. And by the way, Troy Aikman won more Super Bowls (three) than Romo won playoff games (two).

    8) Russell Westbrook joins Oscar Robertson as the only two NBA players to average a triple-double for a season; great for him, good for us, since now TV nitwits can stop talking about it. How many of these people know/care that the Utah Jazz clinched a division last night?

    7) Wichita State jumps from the Missouri Valley to the AAC, making Gregg Marshall’s job a lot tougher. Unsure who replaces Wichita in the Valley— Valparaiso? Omaha? Oral Roberts?

    6) Phil Mickelson has played 92 rounds at The Masters; he is -72 on the 13th hole, which is kind of hard to believe, had I not seen the graphic myself.

    5) Good to see Kareem Abdul-Jabbar doing TV talk shows these days; this is 30 years overdue. Because he hasn’t been much of a public figure, people forget how dominant a player he was, from the time he was in high school, all the way to the Hall of Fame.

When Kareem was at UCLA, freshmen couldn’t play varsity; his freshman team beat the Bruins’ varsity by 20. UCLA’s varsity was the defending national champs.

    4) Football coaches are nomads; here is where Brady Hoke spent the last few years:
    2003-08— Ball State head coach
2009-10— San Diego State head coach
    2011-14— Michigan head coach
    2015— Out of football
    2016— Defensive coordinator, Oregon
    2017— Defensive line coach, Tennessee

    3) Dodger games aren’t always on TV here in Las Vegas; some bogus rule about TV blackouts. It is three hours from here to LA. Weird rule.

    2) Hawks 114, Cavaliers 100— Atlanta rested all five of its starters- those guys must be exhausted- they played Thursday, but their last game before that was Sunday. Anyway here is Cavs’ coach Tyronn Lue on this game:

“I didn’t think we respected them tonight. I thought we thought we’d just mess around with the game until it was time to knuckle down. By that time, they already had confidence. That’s who we’ve been. That’s who we are. I hate it.”

1— Memphis (-12.5) 101, Knicks 88— You have to see how this game ended; guy on Memphis is dribbling out the clock near halfcourt with score 98-88. Just before the shot clock expires, he hoists a 40-footer from the sideline and it swishes at the buzzer!!!

If you bet the Knicks, this was a dagger but if you bet on the Knicks, well……….

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday’s NBA Game of the Day: Clippers at Spurs
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Spurs are locked into the second seed in the West but finish the season against three teams who badly need victories - the Clippers, the Portland Trail Blazers and the Utah Jazz.

Los Angeles Clippers at San Antonio Spurs (Off,Off)

The Los Angeles Clippers are making a late dash at homecourt advantage in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs and look to move closer to landing it when they visit the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. The Clippers are averaging 121 points during a four-game winning streak and trail the fourth-seeded Utah Jazz by one game with three remaining.

Los Angeles is putting the heat on the Jazz - its likely playoff opponent - with power forward Blake Griffin leading the way with three consecutive games of more than 30 points. "He's just been crazy aggressive, crazy efficient," point guard Chris Paul told reporters of Griffin. "He's just been our beast, that's what we call him and stuff like that, so we are going to keep feeding him." The Spurs are locked into the second seed in the West but finish the season against three teams who badly need victories - the Clippers, the Portland Trail Blazers and the Utah Jazz. "We are going to be playing some teams that are playing for seeding, so I think those teams are going to approach those games as a playoff game," San Antonio center Pau Gasol told reporters. "We have to utilize those opportunities to meet that intensity and approach it the same way."

            TV:
            8:30 p.m. ET, ABC

            INJURY REPORT:

Clippers - PG Austin Rivers (Mid April, hamstring), C Diamond Stone (Out Indefinitely, knee)

Spurs - SG Danny Green (Questionable, quadricep), SG Manu Ginobili (Questionable, quadricep), PG Dejounte Murray (Mid April, groin)

            POWER RANKINGS:
            Clippers (-6.7) - Spurs (-11.5) + home court (-3) = Spurs -7.8

            ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (48-31 SU, 37-41-1 ATS, 43-35-1 O/U):
Griffin is finally back in top form after a knee injury forced him out of action for 18 games and compromised his production once he returned. He is 45-of-64 from the field while averaging 31.3 points over the past four games and his conditioning is back to his typical high level. "He's mixing it up and scoring every way," Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers told reporters. "He's shooting, driving and passing. When he faces up and goes, it is either a bucket or a foul. He feels healthy enough to do that more."

            ABOUT THE SPURS (61-18 SU, 41-37-1 ATS, 41-36-2 O/U):
Coach Gregg Popovich is trying to keep his players fresh for the playoffs and he held Gasol, All-Star small forward Kawhi Leonard, power forward LaMarcus Aldridge and point guard Tony Parker out of Friday's 102-89 road win over the Dallas Mavericks. "That was a lot of fun," point guard Patty Mills told reporters after San Antonio won with eight available players, all whom are role players or end-of-the-bench types. "With the guys that we came with, that was kind of the key, just to go out, have fun, enjoy and play basketball." The aforementioned foursome are all expected to see action against the Clippers after NBA commissioner Adam Silver's recent threat to impose "significant penalties" on teams that rest healthy players during nationally televised contests.

            TRENDS:

            * Clippers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
            * Spurs are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games playing on 0 days rest.
            * Under is 6-1 in Clippers last 7 games playing on 2 days rest.
            * Under is 7-2 in Spurs last 9 games following a straight up win of more than 10 points.
            * Under is 7-3 in Spurs last 10 games playing on 0 days rest.
