    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

    — Atlantic Sun tourney started Champ Week last night: both top seeds won easily. Only upset was a slight one, #5-seed Kennesaw State won at SC-Upstate.

    — Virginia 53, North Carolina 43— Tar Heels are an ordinary 5-4 on ACC road.

    — Baylor’s Jake Lindsey (#3) is the son of Utah Jazz GM Dennis Lindsey.

    — Texas released PG Tevin Mack, who had been suspended; curious to see where he surfaces. Longhorns are 3-10 since Mack was suspended.

    — Mississippi State gave football coach Dan Mullen a 4-year extension thru 2021. Guy makes $4.5M a year; I was stunned by that.

    — 16 Miami Dolphins are in NYC this week, taking part in Miami owner Stephen Ross’ Business Combine that should help players manage and increase their wealth better.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) Can be difficult to evaluate pitchers in spring training; take Sunday, when Daniel Gossett looked good pitching against the Angels. Gossett is a prospect, but……

Normally when you face the Angels, you’ll face Calhoun-Trout-Pujols-Maybin in the first two innings. Sunday, Halos’ #3 hitter was Cliff Pennington, not exactly their “A” lineup, so you have to take Gossett’s performance with a grain of salt.

    12) I’m a big fan of the Showtime program Billions; turns out that two of the three co-writers on the show also worked together writing Rounders and Oceans 13, two excellent movies.

    11) With closer Jeurys Familia due to be suspended (domestic violence) at the start of the season, Addison Reed will be the Mets closer on April 3 and for several weeks after.

    10) Toronto Raptors lose G Kyle Lowry (wrist) for the rest of the regular season; they hope to have him back for the playoffs.

    9) These stats are from Justin Ray of Golf Channel: Average age of PGA Tour winners this season is 28.7 years old.

From 2000-13, average age of winners on Tour was 33.4 years old. In 2014-15, it was 30.4.

    8) Reese Maguire is a minor league catcher in the Blue Jays’ system; think catching is in his genes? His dad caught, his grandfather was a catcher for Duke in the College World Series.

    In 1952.

    7) Random food fact: I’ve never had Italian ice or a snow cone. Or coffee.

    6) NFL Combine is this week, so we’ll see lot of 40-yard dashes and agility drills and no one will remind us that Tom Brady had an awful Combine workout and is one of the best QB’s of all time.

Game film means more than workouts, though I’m guessing the interviews teams do with prospects are REALLY helpful. Like the time Geno Smith fiddled with his cellphone during his interviews. Never should’ve been drafted high after that.

    5) San Diego Padres have used 84 players the last two years. Thats a lot.

Seattle Mariners made 37 roster moves between the end of last season and the start of spring training; GM Jerry DiPoto has totally cleaned house, building a new team around his nucleus of Robinson Cano/Felix Hernandez/Hector Cruz

    4) Saturday in Las Vegas, an astute gambler played $7 on a 10-team college hoop parlay and it hit, making him $5,040 (720-1 odds). He played four totals and six sides.

    3) Texas Rangers are 28-10 against the Astros the last two years, with 13 one-run wins. If the Astros can just go 10-9 against Texas this year, thats a 5-game swing in the AL West race.

    2) Only three big leaguers played 162 games last year: Alcides Escobar, Jonathan Schoop and George Springer.

1— Steelers signed WR Antonio Brown to a $17M a year deal, making him the highest-paid WR in the NFL. Maybe next year he can actually listen to his coach’s post-game speeches instead of playing them on Facebook Live.

Brown’s father is Eddie Brown, known here in Albany as Touchdown Eddie Brown, a great player in the Arena League. Eddie Brown once scored nine TD’s in a Firebirds game; he was great fun to watch. Hard to believe it has been 18 years since they won the Arena Bowl.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday’s NCAAB Game of the Day: Florida St. at Duke
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Blue Devils won seven straight before their recent slump, but it’s clear they are not the same team when Allen (15 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists) is not at full strength.

Florida St. Seminoles at Duke Blue Devils (-6.5, 155)

Just when it looked like 14th-ranked Duke had begun to put it all together, it has dropped two straight contests – and faces two tough matchups to wrap up the regular season. The Blue Devils look to snap their skid when they host No. 17 Florida State on Tuesday in a key ACC clash.

Both teams are fighting for seeding in next week’s ACC tournament, as the Seminoles are tied with Louisville and Notre Dame for second place – 1 1/2 games behind North Carolina – while the Blue Devils trail that trio by one game and are tied with Miami for fifth. Duke’s recent slide stems from the same injury issues that caused its early-season woes, as Grayson Allen (ankle) missed Saturday’s 55-50 loss at Miami and Amile Jefferson continues to be hampered by a nagging foot injury, prompting coach Mike Krzyzewski to label both as game-time decisions. “I’ve been thinking about (resting) Grayson and Amile for a week, because they’ve been playing hurt, bottom line,” Krzyzewski told reporters. “They have no push. None. You can tell it on defense, on shooting.” The Seminoles have won two straight following a two-game skid of their own and are coming off a 76-74 win at Clemson – just their third triumph in eight ACC road contests.

              TV:
              7 p.m. ET, ESPN

              LINE HISTORY:
The odds for this matchup were late being released, but once they hit the board Duke was installed as 6.5-point home favorites and the total was set at 155.

              INJURY REPORT:

Florida St. - No significant injuries to report.

Duke - F Amile Jefferson (Probable, foot), F Chase Jeter (Questionable, back), G Grayson Allen (Questionable, ankle), F Sean Obi (Out For Season, knee).

              ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (23-6 SU, 15-10-2 ATS, 15-12 O/U):
The Seminoles can light up the scoreboard with explosive guard Dwayne Bacon (16.6 points) and freshman forward Jonathan Isaac (12.8, 7.3 rebounds) leading the way. Xavier Rathan-Mayes (10.3 points, five assists) is the catalyst, though, as he scored a team-high 15 points while dishing out seven assists against Clemson. Florida State’s most glaring weakness is at the foul line, where it is shooting a paltry 69 percent.

              ABOUT DUKE (22-7 SU, 11-17 ATS, 12-15-1 O/U):
The Blue Devils won seven straight before their recent slump, but it’s clear they are not the same team when Allen (15 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists) is not at full strength. The junior guard's presence helps open up perimeter looks for backcourt mate Luke Kennard (19.9 points, 5.2 rebounds). Freshman Jayson Tatum (16.1 points, 7.3 rebounds) has emerged as Duke’s best post scorer, but the team still relies heavily on Jefferson (11.1, 8.5) for his rebounding and post defense.

              TRENDS:

              * Seminoles are 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 road games.
              * Blue Devils are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games.
              * Under is 5-1 in Seminoles last 6 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
              * Under is 5-1 in Blue Devils last 6 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
              * Under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

              CONSENSUS:
At the time of publication of this preview there was no available consensus information due to the late release of both the point spread and the total.

March Madness is NOW! Betting this week's NCAAB small conference tournaments

Monmouth-NJ got snubbed from the "Big Dance" after losing the MAAC final last season. They're the faves again this year, can they get the job done this time around?

The big boys of the college basketball world don’t start their conference tournaments until next week. But for bubble teams in the major conferences, NCAA Tournament hopes could hinge on what happens this week with the slew of mid-major and small-conference tournaments getting underway. The fewer the upsets in these lesser-lights tourneys, the better off those bubble teams will be.

We get you up to speed on handicapping this week’s tournaments, pointing out each league’s favorite and some live underdogs.

                America East (March 1, 6 & 11)

Favorite: Vermont Catamounts (26-5 overall, 16-0 conference) – The Catamounts were unstoppable in regular-season conference play, thanks to an offense that spreads the ball around. Forward Anthony Lamb leads Vermont at 11.7 points per game, but right behind him is guard Trae-Bell Haynes at 11.6 and forward Payton Henson at 11.3. The Catamounts haven’t lost since Dec. 21, when they went to Butler and played more than respectably in an 81-69 setback.

Underdog: Stony Brook Seawolves (17-12, 12-4) – It’s hard to call a No. 2 seed an underdog, but Stony Brook stands out from the mediocre next batch down in the America East pecking order – Maryland-Baltimore City, New Hampshire and Albany. The Seawolves, last year’s tournament champs, lost Saturday’s regular-season finale at Vermont 66-51, but prior to that had won six in a row and 13 of their last 15.

                Atlantic Sun (Feb. 27, March 2 & 5)

Favorite: Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (24-7, 12-2) – It’s a close call at the top of the A-Sun, as the Eagles split their two regular-season games against No. 2 seed Lipscomb (20-12, 11-3), with the road team winning each time. But FGCU had a stout nonconference schedule that included Baylor, Florida and Michigan State, and has gone 17-2 over its last 16 games, including Monday’s 87-57 whipping of No. 8 Stetson to open the A-Sun tourney. Guard Brandon Goodwin (18.0 points, 3.8 assists per game) hopes to lead the Eagles to their second straight NCAA bid and third in five years.

Underdog: North Florida Osprey (14-18, 8-6) – Third-seeded North Florida has won three of its last four, opening the A-Sun tournament Monday with a 77-74 victory over No. 6 seed Jacksonville. North Florida also features two-time A-Sun Player of the Year Dallas Moore, who is third in the nation at 24.2 ppg and tallied 37 points Monday. Plus, the Osprey mascot forced Covers to Google “Osprey” to figure out what that is. It’s a large, fish-eating bird of prey.

                Big South (Feb. 28, March 2-3 & 5)

Favorite: Winthrop Eagles (23-6, 15-3) and North Carolina-Asheville Bulldogs (23-8, 15-3) – Yes, we’re going with co-favorites here. That’s because the Big South had to go all the way to the third tiebreaker to determine the No. 1 seed for its tournament, with Winthrop getting the honors. The two teams split their regular-season meetings, and both also swept third-place Liberty, which finished just one game back in the conference chase. But the Eagles swept fourth-place Gardner-Webb, while NC-Asheville split. Winthrop’s Keon Johnson (21.8 ppg) was the second-leading scorer in the Big South, helping the Eagles win their last five games – part of a 14-2 overall run – en route to the top seed. NC-Asheville went 10-1 in its last 11 games, paced by guard Ahmad Thomas’ 18 ppg, third in the league.

Underdog: Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs (18-13, 11-7) – The fourth-seeded Runnin’ Bulldogs have won seven of their last nine games, and the two losses came back-to-back in close contests: 92-87 in overtime at home against No. 3 seed Liberty, and 77-71 at No. 1 seed Winthrop. Gardner-Webb beat visiting UNC-Asheville 81-76 last week.

                Colonial (March 3-6)

Favorite: North Carolina-Wilmington Seahawks (26-5, 15-3) – Guard C.J. Bryce (17.3 ppg) leads a quartet of players averaging double figures, and the fourth player in that lot, forward Devontae Cacok (12.3 ppg) is shooting a tremendous 78.7 percent from the field. NC-Wilmington has won six of its last seven games. That said, No. 2 seed Charleston (23-8, 14-4) could be a tough test if it comes to that. The two teams split their regular-season tilts, with the road team winning each time.

Underdog: Towson Tigers (19-12, 11-7) – The third-seeded Tigers fell just short at NC-Wilmington last week, losing 83-78 as a 9.5-point pup, then pushed as a 4-point ‘dog in an 83-79 loss at William & Mary on Saturday. Prior to those setbacks, Towson had won six in a row and 11 of 12, and the Tigers are 9-3-2 ATS in their last 13 games.

                Horizon League (March 3-7)

Favorite: Oakland Golden Grizzlies (24-7, 14-4) – The Golden Grizzlies tied with Valparaiso for the league title, but got the No. 1 seed because they swept Valpo in regular-season play. Oakland heads into the conference tourney on a nine-game winning streak (7-2 ATS), including Sunday’s 86-75 win laying 8.5 points at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Underdog: Northern Kentucky Norse (21-10, 12-6) – The fourth-seeded Norse jumped to live ‘dog status on Sunday, in the regular-season finale. Northern Kentucky notched an 82-78 home win over Valparaiso, knocking the Crusaders out of the No. 1 seed in the process. The Norse won their last three games and seven of their last eight.

                MAAC (March 2-6)

Favorite: Monmouth Hawks (26-5, 18-2) – After losing back-to-back MAAC games Dec. 31 and Jan. 2, at home in overtime to Rider and on the road to St. Peters, the Hawks haven’t lost since. Monmouth has piled up 16 victories in a row, avenging both those conference losses in the process to net the regular-season league title. The Hawks average 81.0 ppg (31st in the country), paced by guard Justin Robinson’s 19.8 ppg.

Underdog: St. Peters Peacocks (18-12, 14-6) – Yes, the Peacocks are the MAAC’s No. 2 seed, but the fact that they finished four games behind Monmouth is enough to make them a pup in this tournament, especially since no other team is worthy of live ‘dog status. St. Peters is on a roll heading into the MAAC tourney, having won six in a row SU and ATS.

                Missouri Valley (March 2-5)

Favorite: Wichita State Shockers (27-4, 17-1) – It’s a tough call, but we’re naming No. 2 seed Wichita State the favorite here. Top seed Illinois State (25-5, 17-1) won the conference tiebreaker based on a higher RPI standing – the two teams split their regular-season meetings – but the Shockers have won 12 in a row, including an 86-45 home beatdown of the Redbirds on Feb. 4.

Underdog: Northern Iowa Panthers (14-15, 9-9) – The Panthers are very unlikely to run the table in the MVC tourney, but outside of Wichita State and Illinois State, Northern Iowa was the only other team to go .500 or better in conference play. And prior to dumping its last three games – including blowouts at Wichita State and in the finale at home to Illinois State – NIU went on a 9-1 spree to get back to some measure of respectability.

                Northeast (March 1, 4 & 7)

Favorite: LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds (20-11, 13-5) – Although the Blackbirds are the second seed, they get our nod as the favorite because they were the only team in the conference to reach 20 overall wins. And win No. 19 was at No. 1 seed Mount St. Mary’s (16-15, 14-4) last week, 62-58. LIU enters the tourney on a six-game winning streak, and 6-7 forward Jerome Frink is the league’s third-leading scorer (17.1 ppg) and second-leading rebounder (8.9).

Underdog: Wagner Seahawks (15-13, 11-7) – The third-seeded Seahawks pushed visiting LIU to overtime in Saturday’s regular-season finale before losing 88-84. Prior to that, Wagner went on a 7-1 run that included a 69-65 home win over top seed Mount St. Mary’s. Seahawks guard Michael Carey averages nearly a double-double per game, at 12.6 points and a league-leading 9.0 rebounds.

                Ohio Valley (March 1-4)

Favorite: Belmont Bruins (22-5, 15-1) – The Bruins, out of the East Division, are clearly the class of this conference, winning the regular-season title by five games over West Division champ and No. 2 seed Tennessee-Martin. Belmont and UT-Martin met once during the regular season, with the Bruins rolling at home 83-67 on Jan. 5, in the early stages of Belmont’s current 18-1 tear. Forward Evan Bradds is the lynchpin, averaging 20.8 ppg on an eye-popping 64.3 percent shooting, along with 8.6 rpg.

Underdog: Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks (20-11, 10-6) – This conference is mired in mediocrity, with six of 12 teams finishing at or within a game of .500 in league play, so the Skyhawks are the only other team that really stands out. Third-seeded Jacksonville State, which tied UT-Martin at 10-6 in league play, was just 14-15 overall. The Skyhawks went 9-3 over their last dozen games.

                Patriot League (March 2, 5 & 8)

Favorite: Bucknell Bison (23-8, 15-3) – The Bison finished three games clear of the rest of the league, though they did stub their toe twice in the last couple of weeks in road losses to No. 3 seed Lehigh and a sub-.500 Loyola-Maryland squad. Forward Zach Thomas leads Bucknell at 15.8 ppg, but 6-9 center Nana Foulland is the driving force, averaging 14.8 ppg on impressive 62.5 percent shooting, while also snatching 7.9 rpg and averaging almost two blocks per game.

Underdog: Lehigh Mountain Hawks (18-11, 12-6) – The Mountain Hawks lost a tiebreaker to Boston University (17-13, 12-6) for the No. 2 seed, but their late-season work makes them a live ‘dog in the Patriot tourney. Lehigh went 6-1 in its last seven regular-season games, including the aforementioned victory over Bucknell. The Mountain Hawks have won four in a row, all by 14 points or more.

                Southern (March 3-6)

Favorite: North Carolina-Greensboro Spartans (23-8, 14-4) – When the dust cleared Monday night after the Southern Conference’s last day of regular-season play, there was a three-way tie atop the league between the Spartans, Furman and East Tennessee State. But NC-Greensboro won the tiebreaker and the top seed, and is even more deserving of the favorite’s role for how it got there. The Spartans won their last seven games, needing every one, including a road rout of Furman and Monday’s 72-66 home victory over ETSU.

Underdog: East Tennessee State Buccaneers (24-7, 14-4) – It’s hard to call a team an underdog when it tied for first place in the regular season. But the Buccaneers are the No. 3 seed in the SoCon tournament, and really no team lower than that has enough going for it to be a live ‘dog. Before Monday’s loss at NC-Greensboro, ETSU went on a 10-1 run. Guard T.J. Cromer (18.5 ppg) is the league’s second-leading scorer, for a team averaging 80.1 ppg while allowing 69.2 ppg.

                Summit League (March 4-7)

Favorite: South Dakota Coyotes (21-10, 12-4) – Behind Matt Mooney (18.0 ppg), the third-leading scorer in the Summit League, South Dakota won six in a row to cap the regular season (5-1 ATS) and snare the No. 1 seed. That run included a 76-66 road upset of North Dakota State as a 6-point pup on Feb. 4, which proved pivotal, as NDSU finished one game back in league play to get the No. 2 seed.

Underdog: Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks (16-13, 9-7) – The third-seeded Mavs won their last three SU and ATS, doing South Dakota a big favor on Saturday by outlasting North Dakota State 96-92. Nebraska-Omaha also owns a home win over the top-seeded Coyotes, 91-83 on Feb. 1. Guard Marcus Tyus (17.6 ppg) is shooting a solid 49.1 percent from the floor overall, and perhaps more impressive 46.7 percent from 3-point range. And the Mavs score like crazy, averaging 83.9 ppg (16th), though they are a bit lopsided as they also allow 84.6 ppg.

                West Coast (March 3-7)

Favorite: Gonzaga Bulldogs (29-1, 17-1) – It’s a no-brainer for a team that could end up a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, although the Bulldogs’ stunning upset loss in the regular-season finale wasn’t helpful. Gonzaga went off as a 20.5-point home chalk against visiting Brigham Young, but fell 79-71 Saturday night. Still, with Nigel Williams-Goss leading the way (16.3 ppg, 4.8 apg, 1.7 steals per game) and four others averaging double-figure scoring, the Zags are the class of the conference.

Underdog: Brigham Young Cougars (21-10, 12-6) – The Cougars, who have just two seniors on their roster, are absolutely a live ‘dog as the No. 3 seed in the WCC tournament. Erik Mika, a 6-10 sophomore, is averaging 20.2 points and 9.4 rebounds, and he had 29 points and 11 boards in the upset of the Zags. BYU won four of its last five, with the loss coming at home to stout No. 2 seed St. Mary’s (26-3, 16-2).
