Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a Thursday night of hoops

    13) Before I start in on Thursday’s college games, there was a high school game this week in California that ended 146-123. A 32:00 high school game ended 146-123. No bueno.

Lonzo Ball’s (PG at UCLA) brother is in 10th grade; he scored 92 points in this game for the winning team, 41 in the 4th quarter, but he rarely crossed half court to defend in the second half. All of this raises numerous questions.

    — What coach allows their players not to play defense, just so he can show off?
    — What parent is OK with their son and his team embarrassing an opponent? The winning team was fouling on purpose, just to get the ball back— this is OK?
    — Who coaches the other team? You have to double or triple-team the kid, just so he can’t make fools out of your players. Thats the least you need to do.
    — Refs are probably relieved that no one on the losing team tried to put the kid into a wall for being a self-absorbed human being.
    — The kid is an outstanding player, already committed to UCLA, and he is only in 10th grade, so this is likely to be repeated at times over the next two years.

    12) Duke 86, North Carolina 78— Sorry to disagree with Duke alum Jay Bilas, but Auburn-Alabama football is a much bigger rivalry than this game; I mean, someone poisoned a tree over the Iron Bowl. I didn’t even know it was possible to poison a tree. Duke was 13-27 on the arc.

Weird fact; these teams have met only once in last 12 ACC tournaments. Surprising.

If I’m running ESPN, I bring in UNC alum Brad Daugherty for a 3-man booth for these rivalry games, with Dan Shulman and Bilas. Too may Dukies on network TV.

    11) Wofford 131, Samford 127, 4OT— This is the third night in a row a game went four OT’s. Samford led by 6 at the half, made 14-27 on the arc but lost.

    10) Purdue 69, Indiana 64— Swanigan had 16 points, 14 boards and I thought he got by far the worst of the officiating- couple fouls against him were total home court calls. . Swanigan has improved his draft stock by staying in college this year. Indiana is 15-10, 5-7 in the Big 14; they need to start winning some games, so Selection Sunday isn’t a very long day.

    9) Northeastern 73, Charleston 72— Kid on Northeastern grabbed an airball, tossed up an underhanded flip at the buzzer and it went in, giving Huskies an unlikely win in a game they trailed by 16 at the half. Cougars fall out of a tie for first place in the CAA.

    8) Furman 60, Chattanooga 56— Paladins are in first place in an improved Southern Conference; well-balanced Paladins start three juniors and a senior- no one on Furman scored more than 13 points in this game. Chattanooga is 2-3 in its last five games.

    7) Rice 89, FIU 78— 16-8 Owls are headed for only their second winning season since 2005; they’re 7-5 in Conference USA.

    6) Colorado 81, Washington 66— Huskies’ star freshman Markelle Futlz didn’t play because of a sore knee, which should raise red flags in front offices all over the bottom half of the NBA. Buffs are now 4-8 in Pac-12, after starting out 0-7 in conference games.

    5) Wisconsin 70, Nebraska 69 OT— Nigel Hayes tore the Cornhuskers’ hearts out with a 3-pointer with 0:18.4 left in OT, after Nebraska had tied the game with a 3-ball at buzzer of regulation. Nebraska has now lost eight of its last nine games.

    4) Cal State-Bakersfield 72, New Mexico State 53— Roadrunners hand NM State their first loss in WAC, are now tied with Aggies in loss column for first place.

    3) Liberty 92, Gardner-Webb 87, 2OT
NC-Asheville 104, Winthrop 101, 2OT— Both winners are 11-2 and tied for first place in the Big South, but they both were fully extended here.

    2) UCLA 82, Oregon 79— Highly entertaining two hours; Ducks controlled the game early, led by 9 at the half, by 13 with 12:00 left, but then UCLA got momentum in the second half and surged to a win that avenged their 89-87 loss in Eugene back in December.

1— St Mary’s and Gonzaga both won their games vs inferior opponents last night, setting up Saturday’s showdown in Moraga. Gonzaga won first meeting with St Mary’s 79-56 at home Jan 14.

No. 1 ranked Gonzaga also nation's best bet

Gonzaga is not only the No. 1 ranked program in the country, they're also the nation's best bet at 17-4-1 ATS.

The football season has come to an end. Get over it.

This is no time to get the post-Super Bowl blues. March Madness is right around the corner and while we know you probably put college hoops on the back-burner during the NFL playoffs, it’s time to start cracking the books to brush up on the college basketball landscape.

Who has been cashing for bettors, while who has been hurting their backers’ bank rolls and who will be peaking as March rolls around? These are all questions we need to answer as we get back into a college hoops frame of mind and what better place to start with the undefeated No. 1 team in the nation.

              Old ‘dogs new tricks

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are having another terrific season. They are currently a perfect 25-0 and seem destined to be on their way to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. But will this year finally be different for the Zags as they attempt to reach the Final Four for the first time in school history?

This season, the Zags have strong non-conference wins against Florida, Iowa State and Arizona and while playing in the WCC will always hurt their resume, they are making up for it by covering huge spreads at a remarkable clip.

The Zags aren’t just the No. 1 team in the polls, they are the No. 1 bet, going 17-4-1 against the spread so far this season. At one point, they covered the spread in 11 consecutive contests and are 10-2-1 ATS in conference play and that is no small task. Against West Coast opponents, they are facing a ridiculous average chalk of 18.8-points per game. Covering big numbers like that on a consistent basis is nothing but impressive, especially when it is so easy to become complacent when you are regularly beating teams by 20-plus points.

Additionally, even with the consistent good play season after season, this is by far the best bet they have been in the last 10-years. Their previous best? 17-13-1 ATS in 2010-11. Gonzaga defeated Loyola Marymount, 90-60, Thursday night as 17.5-point road favorites. The Zags next game should be their toughest remaining challenge of the regular season, when they visit the WCC's second best team, St. Mary's. Gonzaga topped St. Mary's 79-56 as 5-point home faves back on January 14.

Top 5 ATS teams in college basketball:

              1. Gonzaga 17-4-1 ATS
              2. SMU 15-4-1 ATS
              3. Wofford 17-6 ATS
              4. South Dakota 17-6-1 ATS
              5. Louisville 15-6-1 ATS

              No Force behind these Hurricanes

At the other end of the betting spectrum, is Miami. It's been an interesting season for the Hurricanes, who are sit in the middle of the pack in the ACC at 16-7 straight up. Oddsmakers were maybe giving Miami too much credit early on after going 19-14-1 ATS last season. They began 2-8 ATS facing an average chalk 16.2-points per game when they were favored (nine of 10 games). It hasn't gone any better since conference play began, where they are 4-7 ATS. This is perfectly exemplified by their last five games, where they are 4-1 SU, but just 2-3 ATS, which included them squeaking out a 78-77 win as 15.5-point home favorites over Boston College.

The Hurricanes' inconsistencies can be attributed to their unbalanced play at each end the court. They rank an impressive 33rd in points allowed at just 64.2 points per game, but are 204nd in the nation at 72.7 points per game. So it's while it's a little surprising the Hurricanes are the worst bet in college basketball at just 6-15 ATS this season, including a difficult to imagine 3-9 ATS at home, it's not out of the question.

It doesn't get any easier for Miami down the stretch with just three home games left on the schedule, including one against Duke. They also have four road games left, at Virginia, Virginia Tech, Florida State and starting Saturday at Louisville.

Worst 5 ATS teams in college basketball:

              1. Miami 6-15 ATS
              t2. Idaho State 6-14 ATS
t2. Cal Poly SLO 6-14 ATS
              4. Pacific 6-13 ATS
              5. Western Carolina 6-13 ATS

              Golden Eagles soaring Over totals

The Golden Eagles of Oral Roberts rank a putrid 324th in points allowed, giving up 80 points per game, while at the same time netting 75 points per game themselves, making them the top Over bet in the country at 17-7-1 O/U this season. Before going Under in its last two games, Oral Roberts had gone Over in 11 consecutive games. Their next game is Saturday against the Indiana - Purdue Jaguars, who themselves are 15-6 O/U this season.

Top 5 Over bets in college basketball:

              1. Oral Roberts 17-7-1
              2. Missouri State 16-6
              3. Temple 16-6-2
              4. Arizona State 16-7-2
              5. Indiana State 16-7

              Highlanders loving low numbers

UC Riverside is one of the top under teams in the nation at 13-5 thanks to the fact they score a minuscule 65.5 points per game. That ranks 325th in Division 1. They also are allowing just 69.7 points per game which helps out quite a bit. UC Riverside visits UC Davis Aggies on TSaturday night, who are 8-11-1 O/U this season.

Top 5 Under bets in college basketball:

              1. Tennessee Tech 14-5
              2. UC Riverside 13-5
              3. UC Santa Barbara 12-5
              t4. Louisiana-Monroe 11-5
              t4. Fairfield 11-5
