    Saturday's Elite Eight
    January 13, 2017

A look at the day's top eight college basketball matchups, ranked in order of most attractive.

    SATURDAY, JAN. 14

    Matchup Records Skinny Projection

    Florida State
    Overall: 16-1 SU, 10-5 ATS
    ACC: 4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS
    Totals: 8-7 O/U

    North Carolina
    Overall: 15-3 SU, 8-8 ATS
    ACC: 3-1 SU, 1-2-1 ATS
    Totals: 6-11 O/U

Florida State at North Carolina, 2 p.m. ET, ESPN

A victory here would put the Seminoles two games up on every team in the ACC except Notre Dame, so continuing their unprecedented run in league play with a road upset here would put them on the fast track for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament with two months left until Selection Sunday. FSU comes off one of the finest wins in program history, an 88-72 rout of Duke where they shot 57.5 percent in the second half, beating Duke in all phases. This is no fluke. The ‘Noles have a lottery pick in leading rebounder and shot blocker Jonathan Isaac, a 6-10 forward that grew eight inches in high school like Anthony Davis did and retained his guard skills. Xavier Rathan-Mayes has had a quiet season but led the way against Duke with 21 points, while top scorer Dwayne Bacon (17.8 ppg) is often flammable. Sophomore Terance Mann has played his best of late, and 7-footer Michael Ojo leads a stable of capable role players. The Tar Heels have a veteran team with considerably more big-game experience and will be in their comfort zone at home, but they’ve got injury concerns. Backup center Tony Bradley, a freshman standout, will be sidelined by concussion, a big blow softened only slightly be the fact Theo Pinson has returned after missing most of the season healing from a broken foot. Borderline first-round pick Justin Jackson (17.7, 4.9) and Kennedy Meeks (12.9, 9.7) will have to do the heavy lifting up front. UNC is perfect at the Smith Center this season, improving to 5-2 ATS after last Sunday's 107-56 rout of NC State. The Heels lost only once at home last season and won in Tallahassee 106-90 in its highest-scoring game.

    North Carolina 85
    Florida State 81

    Saint Mary's
    Overall: 15-1 SU, 8-4-1 ATS
West Coast: 5-0 SU, 3-2 ATS
    Totals: 5-8 O/U

    Gonzaga
    Overall: 16-0 SU, 11-2 ATS
West Coast: 4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS
    Totals: 7-6 O/U

    Saint Mary's at Gonzaga, 10 p.m. ET, ESPN2

Although they likely worked on some details of the game plan for this colossal WCC matchup, neither the Zags nor Gaels were caught looking ahead on Thursday night. Gonzaga hung a 93-55 beating on Loyola Marymount to remain the nation’s lone unbeaten, while Saint Mary’s was even more impressive in a 74-33 win at rested Portland. They led 37-9 at the break. The rematch will be held in Moraga on Feb. 11, and there’s probably going to be another in the WCC Tournament. Saint Mary’s won both regular-season meetings a year ago to win the title, but lost in the conference tourney championship game. Not surprisingly, the ‘Zags were able to speed up the pace in that final, while the other two were lower-scoring. Saint Mary’s employs the second-slowest tempo in the country and can lock you down defensively. Tune in for the point guard battle between Nigel Williams-Goss and Emmett Naar, but stay for the big man wars between SMC’s Jock Landale, Dane Prineau and Evan Fitzner against Gonzaga’s Przemek Karnowski and Zach Collins. Gonzaga lost four games at home last season, a rarity in Spokane, so this one will be personal as they attempt to remain perfect. Gonzaga has beaten eight consecutive opponents by double-digits. Saint Mary's has done the same in nine straight since a 65-51 home loss to Texas-Arlington on Dec. 8. It should be noted that the only times this season that Gonzaga failed to cover the spread, the game went 'under.'

    Duke
    Overall: 14-3 SU, 7-9 ATS
    ACC: 2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS
    Totals: 7-9 O/U

    Louisville
    Overall: 14-3 SU, 10-5 ATS
    ACC: 2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS
    Totals: 3-12 O/U

Duke at Louisville, 12 p.m. ET, ESPN

The Blue Devils lost three straight in January last season, but ultimately rallied in a down year to follow up a national championship with a Sweet 16 appearance. They haven’t lost consecutive games since, but are in danger of doing so after a bleak effort in Tallahassee became the first setback since Jeff Capel took over for Mike Krzyzewski as he recovers from back surgery. Duke is 0-2 on the road in league play and in danger of falling under .500 in the conference this deep in for the first time since 2007, so we’ll see how resilient this group can be without Coach K. Currently, controversial guard Grayson Allen is taking the bulk of the criticism for his on-court extra-curriculars, but he’s actually being a good teammate by taking most of the heat off the true key to Duke’s success going forward, the continued emergence of freshmen Jayson Tatum and Harry Giles. With senior big man Amile Jefferson sidelined by a bone bruise in his foot, the kids must lead the charge. Duke can’t beat Louisville solely with Allen, Luke Kennard and Matt Jones firing from the perimeter. The Cards are too sound defensively and generate miscues with their pressure. Forward Deng Adel overcame a concussion and has been the x-factor of late, while guards Quentin Snider and Donovan Mitchell have been sound. Rick Pitino complained that his team isn’t “fundamentally sound” after it allowed Pitt to nearly come all the way back from a 24-point second half deficit thanks to Jamel Artis’ 43 points. It might help the ‘Ville to have suffered that near-collapse since it should ensure they’ll be locked in for the 40 minutes it’s going to take to win this one. This will be the only meeting barring an ACC Tournament matchup. Duke is 2-1 against the Cardinals since they joined the conference. The over has prevailed in its last four games.

    Xavier
    Overall: 13-3 SU, 9-6 ATS
Big East: 3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS
    Totals: 7-8 O/U

    Butler
    Overall: 14-3 SU, 10-5 ATS
Big East: 3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS
    Totals: 6-7-2 O/U

    Xavier at Butler, 2 p.m. ET, FS1

This is a huge game for the Bulldogs, who are in danger of falling two games back of Big East’s beasts if they falter at home. Fortunately, they’re 10-0 in Indianapolis, which includes a 9-0 mark at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. They’ll need a little home cooking to come into play against a Musketeers squad looking to avoid their fourth road loss in five games, having also remained perfect at home. Xavier is hoping to bounce back from a 79-54 loss at Villanova where it shot 29 percent and missed 26 of 32 3-pointers. The Muskies shot 57 percent in a 74-57 victory at Hinkle last season, handing Butler its last lost in its building, and has a three-game winning streak in the series. Butler hasn’t lost two straight since last January, a stretch of 30 games, and has shown off its resiliency by bouncing back from losses with takedowns of Creighton, Georgetown, Texas Tech, Cincinnati and Providence. That’s impressive. The key matchup here features terrific wings Kelan Martin (16.8, 5.5) and Trevvon Bluiett (17.3, 5.9), two of the top players in the Big East, squaring off. Both come off bad games, but Bluiett got the better of their duels last season as Martin shot just 33 percent against Xavier’s defense, averaging just 13 points. Martin is slumping in conference play, averaging just 12.0 points on 30 percent shooting.

    UCLA
    Overall: 17-1 SU, 11-7 ATS
    Pac-12: 4-1 SU, 1-4 ATS
    Totals: 10-7-1 O/U

    Utah

    Overall: 12-4 SU, 7-6 ATS
    Pac-12: 3-1 SU, 3-0-1 ATS
    Totals: 8-6 O/U

    UCLA at Utah, 6 p.m. ET, Pac-12N

Although Arizona and Oregon remain undefeated in Pac-12 play, these teams are right behind them and will look to keep pace in what should be a fun atmosphere in Salt Lake City. UCLA responded to the challenge of playing in Boulder’s altitude with a 104-89 thrashing of Colorado, riding Bryce Alford’s 37-point night and nine 3-pointers. The Bruins set a program-record with 19 3-pointers on just 31 shots. UCLA averages 93.4 points per game and owns the country’s second-highest shooting percentage. They’ll run up against one of the better defenses in the league in the Utes, which held USC to 36.7 percent shooting in Thursday’s 86-64 loss. Utah took advantage of the Trojans missing 12 layups and lacking rhythm, but also impressed by making nine straight shots just before halftime to put the game away. They shot a season-best 9-for-17 from beyond the arc, so we’ll see if they can stay hot against a team they won’t be able to slow down as effectively with their zone. Utah will need to score to pull off this upset, but do have quality size in bigs David Collette and Kyle Kuzma that should be able to generate some matchup problems. Utah has athletes in Lorenzo Bonam, JoJo Zamora and Devon Daniels that should be active on the perimeter, but they’re going to have to make shots. Shooter Sedrick Barefield would be a valuable x-factor if he can get it going. Despite their gaudy offensive numbers, the ‘under’ is actually 4-3 in UCLA’s last seven, but both teams have seen the ‘over’ thrive in their last two contests.

    UCLA 85
    Utah 80

    Notre Dame
    Overall: 15-2 SU, 6-3-2 ATS
    ACC: 4-0 SU, 3-0-1 ATS
    Totals: 7-4 O/U

    Virginia Tech
    Overall: 13-3 SU, 7-5-1 ATS
    ACC: 2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS
    Totals: 7-4-1 O/U

Notre Dame at Virginia Tech, 2 p.m. ET, WatchESPN

Notre Dame has opened ACC play with four consecutive wins, marking the first time in school history that it has done so in either the Big East or this league. Remember, Fighting Irish basketball remained an Independent until 1995, so this streak doesn’t date too far into their marvelous history but remains impressive. They’re looking to improve to 5-0 in the top league in the country by winning their first three road games, having squeaked past both Pittsburgh and Miami. Notre Dame largely controlled Thursday’s win over the Hurricanes before falling behind and rallying to rescue the result. Steve Vasturia, who beat Pitt with big shots in OT, helped put the game away after V.J. Beachem’s huge bucket. Junior Bonzie Colson (15.9, 10.8), one of the nation’s premier power forwards, was held to a season-low eight points and Notre Dame still won, so this group will be confident going into Blacksburg. The Hokies are 24-6 at home over the last two seasons and rank among the top 26 in the country in scoring, field goal percentage and 3-point shooting percentage. They’ve been explosive at home, coming in undefeated. The over is perfect in Virginia Tech’s games in the new year. Notre Dame is 3-0-1 against the number in ’17. Guard Seth Allen returned from a head injury suffered in Tech’s first league loss at NC State that kept him out of the FSU setback, so they’re happy to have his stabilizing presence back in the lineup for this key game they hope to capture in order to climb back above .500 in the conference.

    Baylor
    Overall: 15-1 SU, 7-4 ATS
    Big 12: 3-1 SU, 1-3 ATS
    Totals: 3-7-1 O/U

    Big 12: 2-2 SU, 2-1-1 ATS

Baylor at Kansas State, 4:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU

The Bears opened the week No. 1 for the first time in school history but were then thumped by West Virginia. The result was fairly predictable given the environment in Morgantown and the pressure the Mountaineers put on teams, taking them out of their comfort zone. Although termed an “upset,” West Virginia was a 5.5-point favorite and covered easily in an 89-68 rout, but Baylor should be more in their element here despite K-State opening as a slight favorite too. This game should be played at a more deliberate pace, which allows Baylor to exploit its length in the post and out on the perimeter. Prior to their trip to Morgantown, the Bears had surrendered more than 63 points only once. It will be interesting to see whether they’ll be able to clamp down on a Wildcats offense that has scored at least 65 in all but of their games. Coming off a 66-65 loss at Texas Tech that it blew down the stretch, K-State is perfect in Manhattan this season, but has feasted on a relatively light home schedule and held serve as definitive favorites against Texas and Oklahoma. Wesley Iwundu (12.3) leads five double-digit scorers in a balanced attack that could have success against Baylor by moving the ball around patiently. D.J. Johnson and Dean Wade will get their chance to prove they can hang with two of the elite bigs in the conference in Johnathan Motley and Jo Lual-Acuil. The Wildcats knocked off Buddy Hield-led Oklahoma at home when it was ranked No. 1 last season, but lost to Baylor by 10 points in Manhattan and in double-OT in Waco.

    Baylor 76
    Kansas State 67

    Georgia
    Overall: 11-5 SU, 6-6 ATS
    SEC: 3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS
    Totals: 5-7 O/U

    Florida
    Overall:13-3 SU, 10-4 ATS
    SEC: 4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS
    Totals: 8-6 O/U
    Georgia at Florida, 12 p.m. ET, ESPN2

Kentucky, South Carolina and Florida have separated themselves as the class of the SEC, but the Dawgs have a shot to crash the party despite opening as a double-digit underdog entering this trip to Gainesville. Georgia was extremely impressive in a 69-47 win at Ole Miss and has the potential to go on a run, but needs to show that it can hang with the top teams in the league since they’ve lost games to Clemson, Kansas and Marquette already in addition to opening 2017 with a 67-61 home loss to the Gamecocks. Forward Yante Maten and guard J.J. Frazier are two of the conference’s top talents, so the potential is there. The Gators, ranked third nationally in RPI, will look to snuff out Georgia’s aspirations by winning their seventh straight and are perfect at home in the newly renovated and renamed Exactech Arena at O’Connell Center. Florida has won their first three games there, averaging 82.3 points in taking down Little Rock, Ole Miss and Tennessee. Guards Kasey Hill and Ke’Vaughn Allen have formed the best backcourt in the league outside of Lexington. Thus far, the Gators have eluded an SEC-wide trend that has seen road teams go 17-7 against all other schools. Georgia’s Mark Fox is 3-9 against Florida and has never won in Gainesville, a feat that has eluded the Dawgs since 2002. Maybe they’ll appreciate the renovation, but it will take a double-double from Yaten, who most avoid foul trouble, to pull off an upset. Frazier will also need another guard to step up and take some pressure off him, so keep an eye on sophomore freshman Turtle Jackson or freshman Jordan Harris as a potential x-factor.

    Florida 73
    Georgia 69

Saturday's NCAAB Top 25 betting cheat sheet

FSU looks to extend their school-record winning streak to 13 games when they visit UNC Saturday.

      Georgia at No. 23 Florida (-10.5, 142)

A six-game winning streak has vaulted No. 23 Florida into a tie for first place in the SEC standings entering Saturday’s home contest against Georgia, and depth is a big reason why. The Gators stumbled badly at times Tuesday at Alabama but got 41 points from their bench – two more points than their starting lineup produced – in an 80-67 victory during which Florida allowed only six points in the final 6 ½ minutes.

Reigning SEC player of the week KeVaughn Allen scored only six points, but Canyon Barry and Keith Stone came off the bench to hit a combined five 3-pointers and score 27 points. The Bulldogs smothered Ole Miss in a 69-47 road victory Wednesday, limiting the Rebels to just 27.5 percent shooting from the field. Yante Maten, who sits second in the SEC in scoring and rebounding, posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while guard J.J. Frazier rediscovered his touch from 3-point range in scoring a team-high 17 points. Georgia has won three of its first four SEC games, limiting opponents to 67 points or less three times.

      TRENDS:

      * Bulldogs are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win.
      * Gators are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games.
      * Over is 5-1 in Bulldogs last 6 games after allowing less than 50 points in their previous game.
      * Over is 7-1 in Gators last 8 games following a straight up win.
      * Bulldogs are 0-7 ATS in the last 7 meetings in Florida.

No. 24 Minnesota at Penn State (-1, 142)

Minnesota looks to bounce back from its worst loss of the season when it travels to face Penn State in a Saturday afternoon Big Ten contest. The No. 24 Golden Gophers were blown out by Michigan State on Wednesday by 18 points, while the Nittany Lions had a week to savor a win over the Spartans.

Minnesota guard Nate Mason has been a constant for coach Richard Pitino, leading the team in scoring (14.3 points) and assists (5.4 assists), though he’s become more aggressive looking for his own shot in conference play, averaging 17.4 points through five Big Ten games. Defense is what made the Gophers successful, though, as they hold opponents to 38.3 percent shooting from the field and average 6.6 blocks. The Nittany Lions are young, with two freshmen - Lamar Stevens and Tony Carr - among their top four scorers. Shep Garner is the team’s leading point producer, averaging 12.8 points and connecting on 2.5 3-pointers a contest, teaming with Payton Banks and Carr to give the Lions a number of long-range shooters that can help stretch a defense.

      TRENDS:

      * Golden Gophers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss.
      * Nittany Lions are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Saturday games.
      * Under is 4-1 in Golden Gophers last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
      * Under is 7-1 in Nittany Lions last 8 Saturday games.

      No. 18 Virginia at Clemson (+2.5, 124.5)

Virginia is hoping that a superb second-half performance its last time out can carry the squad through a road-heavy stretch, beginning Saturday at Clemson in an ACC matchup. The 18th-ranked Cavaliers had dropped two straight and were losing at home to Wake Forest with under 13 minutes remaining Sunday night before a furious rally resulted in a momentum-shifting 79-62 victory.

Senior leader London Perrantes put the team on his shoulders with 19 of his season-high 24 points in the second half, showing a new-found aggressiveness that might be necessary to steer the squad back toward the top of the ACC. "I said, 'London, you know you've had three great years. You're in a different situation this year,'" coach Tony Bennett told reporters of his message for Perrantes. ". ... This is really good for your game because you are going to have to learn to be as efficient as you can. More is being called upon for you.'" Perrantes is averaging 20 points over his last two games - while committing one turnover in 73 total minutes - and has made 9-of-13 from 3-point range in the last three contests. He will be a challenge for a Tigers team that has lost three in a row while giving up an average of 79.7 points.

      TRENDS:

      * Tigers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
      * Under is 12-1 in Cavaliers last 13 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
      * Under is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings in Clemson.
      * Cavaliers are 1-4-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings in Clemson.

      No. 7 Duke at No. 15 Louisville (-4.5, 145.5)

Duke is winless on opponents’ home courts and will try to avoid its third straight road loss when it hosts No. 15 Louisville on Saturday. The seventh-ranked Blue Devils are facing a second consecutive ranked opponent on the road and hoping to avoid dropping below .500 through at least five ACC games for the first time since 2006-07.

The Cardinals also have endured the grind of ACC play, dropping two of their first three conference games – both to ranked foes – but they’ve won two straight after an 85-80 triumph over Pittsburgh on Wednesday. The Blue Devils were ranked No. 1 in the preseason, but they’ve rarely been at full strength and have struggled to find an identity, using seven different starting lineups through 17 games. Duke has relied more on its highly-touted freshmen of late, as star big man Amile Jefferson will miss his second straight game with a foot injury, a costly absence in Tuesday’s 88-72 loss at Florida State. “With a young team, we’ve just got to take our lumps and grow from it,” Duke guard Matt Jones told reporters. “It’s not the end all, be all right now. It’s still January, so we just have to keep getting better and fighting.”

      TRENDS:

      * Blue Devils are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
      * Cardinals are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS loss.
      * Under is 8-2 in Blue Devils last 10 Saturday games.
      * Under is 4-0 in Cardinals last 4 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.

      No. 3 Villanova at St. John’s (+12.5, 150.5)

Villanova is officially back on track, which likely will be bad news for St. John's when the Big East schools clash on Saturday. The visiting Wildcats dropped to No. 3 in the polls after a loss at Butler but have rebounded with solid home victories against Marquette and Xavier.

Senior standouts Kris Jenkins and Josh Hart notched 20 points apiece in the win over Xavier. Villanova limited the Musketeers to 29.3 percent shooting - 6-of-32 from long range - in winning for the 22nd time in 23 games. "If you focus on defense and rebounds," Jenkins told reporters, "most of the time you'll win." The Red Storm's three-game winning streak against Syracuse, Butler and DePaul is a distant memory at this point following recent losses by 13, 15 and 28 points.

      TRENDS:

      * Wildcats are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 road games.
      * Under is 6-1 in Wildcats last 7 overall.
      * Under is 6-0 in Wildcats last 6 games following a straight up win.
      * Over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in St. John's.

Oklahoma State at No. 2 Kansas (-13.5, 172.5)

Even though No. 2 Kansas is undefeated in Big 12 play and Oklahoma State winless, if recent results are any indication, Saturday’s contest in Lawrence will be a close one. Kansas will be eyeing a 52nd straight home victory and 16th straight win while the Cowboys will be looking to avoid their first 0-5 conference start since 1995-96.

Despite 24 points by senior Phil Forte, Oklahoma State couldn’t hold a five-point lead in the final nine minutes of a 96-86 loss to Iowa State on Wednesday. The Cowboys lost their previous two games by a combined seven points, including a 61-57 loss to then-No. 2 Baylor. "Every game is going to come down to that in the Big 12 and we got to figure out a way to close them, get that rebound, get that stop, “ Forte told reporters after the Iowa State loss. “We gave up too many points. When you score 86 points, that should be enough to win a game." The Jayhawks, heavy favorites to win an unprecedented 13th straight Big 12 title, finally produced a double-digit win in league play with Tuesday’s 81-70 victory at Oklahoma but had to rally from a nine-point halftime deficit.

      TRENDS:

      * Cowboys are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games following a double-digit loss at home.
      * Jayhawks are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a ATS loss.
      * Over is 4-1-1 in Cowboys last 6 overall.
      * Over is 5-0 in Jayhawks last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
      * Home team is 6-0 ATS in the last 6 meetings.

No. 10 Florida State at No. 12 North Carolina (-7.5, 164.5)

No. 10 Florida State finished the first half of a challenging stretch in which it is expected to play six straight ranked teams, and has yet to suffer a loss. The first-place Seminoles continue that gauntlet and attempt to extend their school-record winning streak to 13 games when they visit 12th-ranked North Carolina for an ACC showdown on Saturday afternoon.

“We are just trying to take it one game at a time and not get ourselves caught up in anything other than what is going on in the moment,” Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton told reporters after Tuesday’s 88-72 win over Duke. “That is how we try to approach it and I think our guys have matured with that philosophy.” The Seminoles are scoring 86.7 per game while shooting better than 50 percent from the field and need more of the same against North Carolina’s high-powered offense, which registered at least 90 points 10 times this season. The Tar Heels coughed up a 19-point lead but pulled out a 93-87 victory at Wake Forest on Wednesday to increase their winning streak to three. “It’s the ACC, and we can win by a lot and we can win by a little,” North Carolina guard Joel Berry II told reporters. “But I think we need games like that, because it will help you on down the road when you get into a tough situation.”

      TRENDS:

      * Seminoles are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
      * Over is 13-3 in Seminoles last 16 games following a ATS win.
      * Over is 4-0 in Tar Heels last 4 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
      * Over is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.
      * Seminoles are 1-5 ATS in the last 6 meetings.

No. 20 Notre Dame at Virginia Tech (-2.5, 154.5)

Zach LeDay’s plea to his Virginia Tech teammates paid off. After snapping a two-game losing streak Tuesday, the Hokies play the second of three straight at home when No. 20 Notre Dame visits on Saturday.

LeDay laid into his squad after Virginia Tech lost two straight on the road by a combined 41 points to North Carolina State and Florida State. The Hokies responded by defeating Syracuse 83-73 behind 22 points from LeDay and 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists from sophomore guard Chris Clarke. “Any coach will tell you this, if it’s an exclusively coach-led team, there is a level to your success. “But when it becomes a player-led team – because the players know what is right and what is wrong – that changes the level," Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams told reporters. "I thought some of that came to light over the past two and a half days, and Zach was a part of that.” Notre Dame remained undefeated in ACC play and won their sixth straight overall by outlasting Miami 67-62 and ending the Hurricanes' 21-game home winning streak on Thursday.

      TRENDS:

      * Fighting Irish are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
      * Over is 4-1 in Fighting Irish last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
      * Over is 4-0 in Hokies last 4 overall.
      * Road team is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.

      No. 14 Xavier at No. 13 Butler (-5, 142)

Although both Xavier and Butler sit near the top of the Big East standings, neither program offered much resistance to the class of the conference in their most recent setbacks. Both teams will try to avoid consecutive losses Saturday when the 14th-ranked Musketeers visit Hinkle Fieldhouse to square off against the 13th-ranked Bulldogs.

Butler proved worthy of its ranking by defeating each of the first four Top 25 foes it faced - including former top-ranked Villanova last week - but was no match for eighth-ranked Creighton in a 75-64 loss on Wednesday. "We have a lot of work ahead of us. Right now, we're just not good enough to take on a team like (Creighton), especially on the road. The first half showed that," coach Chris Holtmann told reporters after his Bulldogs fell behind by 20 at halftime and trailed by as many as 25 points in the second half. Xavier didn't fare any better in its most recent showdown despite the season debut of last year's third-leading scorer Myles Davis, missing 14 of 15 shots midway through the first half to squander an early eight-point lead before falling behind by as many as 29 after intermission in a 79-54 defeat at Villanova. "Well, the annual Villanova (butt) kicking. I'm getting really tired of it," Musketeers coach Chris Mack said at the beginning of his postgame press conference.

      TRENDS:

      * Musketeers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
      * Bulldogs are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games.
      * Over is 9-2 in Musketeers last 11 vs. Big East.
      * Musketeers are 10-1-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
      * Musketeers are 6-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings in Butler.

      Auburn at No. 6 Kentucky (-23.5, 171.5)

Kentucky coach John Calipari has the best seat in the house and it should only get better as his team - loaded with future pros - continues to mature. The No. 6 Wildcats host Auburn on Saturday afternoon after surviving an upset bid at Vanderbilt on Tuesday as sophomore Isaiah Briscoe and freshmen De'Aaron Fox, Malik Monk and Bam Adebayo combined to score all but 10 of Kentucky's 87 points and continued to make NBA scouts drool.

“Look, I got good players,'' Calipari told reporters. "... My job is to get them more disciplined, more focused, playing when another team’s playing a certain way. Watching this team play, you’ve got to have fun. Like, wow, this is fun watching them. The stuff they do, as fast as they’re playing, some unbelievable plays that they make.” The Wildcats should have little trouble avenging a 75-70 loss to the Tigers in Auburn, Ala., last season that snapped an 18-game winning streak in the series. The Tigers could be without freshman forward Danjel Purifoy (13.7 points, 5.8 rebounds per game), the team's second-leading scorer and rebounder who missed Tuesday's 77-72 victory in Missouri because of an ankle injury. "I felt like I was a hockey coach, sending them over the boards and changing lines," Auburn coach Bruce Pearl told reporters Tuesday after the Tigers won their first SEC game after losing the first three. "The loss of Danjel (Purifoy) is just huge. Nobody can really replace him."

      TRENDS:

      * Tigers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win.
      * Wildcats are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS loss.
      * Under is 9-2 in Tigers last 11 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
      * Under is 5-0 in Wildcats last 5 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
      * Under is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings.

No. 9 West Virginia at Texas (+10, 145.5)

West Virginia looks to validate its biggest victory of the season while not suffering a letdown Saturday afternoon when it visits struggling Texas, which owns a three-game winning streak over the No. 9 Mountaineers in Austin. Immediately after West Virginia crushed top-ranked Baylor 89-68 on Monday with the "Press Virginia" defense unleashing its full fury, coach Bob Huggins spoke of how such victories should come as no surprise.

"From the players to the managers, there was nobody in our locker room that didn't think we should win," Bob Huggins told reporters Monday after the fans rushed the court. "My hope is we get to the point where it's expected rather than celebrating." The Mountaineers' relentless defense forces 24.6 turnovers per game - most than five better than the second-best team in the nation - after Baylor committed a season-high 29, coming within two of its school record. The Longhorns are coming off a 64-61 loss to TCU on Wednesday - snapping a 14-game home win streak against the Horned Frogs. Texas on Saturday will be without leading scorer Tevin Mack (14.8 points per game) after the 6-7 sophomore guard was suspended Thursday for the second time this season because he "failed to meet expectations set for players in this program,'' Longhorns coach Shaka Smart said in a statement.

      TRENDS:

      * Mountaineers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
      * Over is 4-0-1 in Mountaineers last 5 overall.
      * Favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings.
      * Mountaineers are 1-7 ATS in the last 8 meetings.

No. 1 Baylor at Kansas State (-2.5, 129.5)

Top-ranked Baylor got to enjoy it's first ever No. 1 ranking for one whole day before getting thumped at ninth-ranked West Virginia on Tuesday. Now the Bears will try to avoid their first losing streak of the season when they visit Kansas State on Saturday afternoon.

Baylor had a season-high 29 turnovers in the 89-68 loss at Morgantown, but despite its No. 1 ranking it really wasn't a big upset considering the Mountaineers actually went into the contest as 5 1/2-point favorites. "It's disappointing but we knew it would be a tough game," forward Terry Maston told the Waco Tribune. "We knew they would try to speed us up and ride the momentum of beating (then-No. 1) Kansas last year. But I still believe in our team, and we're going to get ready to play Kansas State on Saturday." Kansas State, which knocked off No. 1-ranked Oklahoma last year at home, has lost three games by a combined four points against Maryland (69-68), Kansas (90-88) and Tuesday at Texas Tech (66-65). "We've been in big games," Wildcats coach Bruce Weber told the Manhattan (Kan.) Mercury. "We were on a big stage (against Oklahoma last year). We played Maryland in the Barclays. It's a great opportunity."

      TRENDS:

      * Bears are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 road games.
      * Wildcats are 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS win.
      * Over is 5-0 in Bears last 5 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
      * Over is 5-1 in Wildcats last 6 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
      * Over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in Kansas St..

      No. 4 UCLA at Utah (+3, 166)

UCLA and Utah are the only Pac-12 teams with six players averaging at least 10 points per game and they'll match up Saturday when the fourth-ranked Bruins visit the Huntsman Center. The Utes have been tough to beat in their arena again this season, posting a 9-1 record and winning their fifth straight at home Thursday night against No. 25 USC.

A victory against UCLA should be enough to lift Utah into the Top 25, and the Utes looked impressive for all but the first five minutes while dismantling a USC team that began the season 14-0. Their balance was on full display in the 86-64 victory, as five players scored between 12 to 17 points, led by 6-5 freshman guard Devon Daniels, who has reached double digits in scoring in three straight games while converting 18-for-28 from the floor in that span. UCLA's hottest player is senior guard Bryce Alford, who scored a career-high 37 points Thursday at Colorado, shooting 9-for-14 from 3-point range as the Bruins made a school-record 19 beyond the arc in the 104-89 victory. Alford's effort didn't come out of the blue, as he had scored at least 20 points in four of the previous six games, shooting 25-for-49 from 3-point range in that span.

      TRENDS:

      * Bruins are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
      * Utes are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 vs. Pacific-12.
      * Under is 5-1 in Bruins last 6 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
      * Under is 5-1 in Utes last 6 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
      * Home team is 6-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings.
      * Under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

      No. 21 St. Mary’s at No. 5 Gonzaga (-7.5, 135.5)

Fifth-ranked Gonzaga is the only unblemished team in the nation and aims to run its winning streak to 17 games when it hosts No. 21 Saint Mary's in Saturday's West Coast Conference showdown. The Bulldogs have notched 10 wins by 20 or more points while regularly steamrolling opponents and the Gaels have posted nine consecutive victories, including a 74-33 dismantling of Portland on Thursday.

Saint Mary's won both regular-season meetings with Gonzaga last season but the Bulldogs knocked off the Gaels in the WCC tournament title contest to relegate Saint Mary's to the NIT. The Gaels are 5-0 on the road this season with four of the victories coming by double digits. Gonzaga is 9-0 at home after demolishing Loyola Marymount 93-55 on Thursday and the players say they aren't feeling any pressure being the lone remaining undefeated squad in the country. "We do just a great job of taking care of business and keeping control," sophomore guard Josh Perkins told reporters. "We want to keep it going."

      TRENDS:

      * Gaels are 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win.
      * Bulldogs are 14-2 ATS in their last 16 games following a ATS win.
      * Under is 9-1 in Gaels last 10 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
      * Under is 9-1 in Bulldogs last 10 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
      * Under is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings.

Oregon State at No. 11 Oregon (-25.5, 131.5)

After last Saturday’s performance against Washington State, Oregon is certainly happy that Chris Boucher was granted an extra year of eligibility. The No. 11 Ducks hope for a repeat performance by the 6-10 forward when they host the 347th edition of the Civil War on Saturday.

Boucher joined Oregon last season out of junior college and was declared a senior due to the circumstances of his high school graduation, however he was granted a waiver request last March. With junior forward Dillon Brooks ejected for kicking an opposing player just minutes into the game with the Cougars, Boucher stepped up with career highs of 29 points and six 3-pointers to go with eight rebounds and three blocks in the 85-66 triumph. Oregon has won 13 straight - the last three in league play by a combined 60 points - since beating undefeated and then-No.2 UCLA 89-87 on Dec. 28. With the continued absence of sophomore forward Tres Tinkle (20.2 points, 8.3 rebounds per game), the Beavers have dropped four straight - all in conference play - and nine of 10 since an 84-59 win over Southern Oregon on Nov. 28.

      TRENDS:

      * Ducks are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win.
      * Over is 10-1 in Beavers last 11 road games.
      * Over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in Oregon.
      * Over is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.
