    • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

      — Cubs had 12 runs in first five innings Monday against the pitching-poor Angels.

      — Saints turned down a trade of WR Brandin Cooks to the Patriots for the 32nd pick in this spring’s draft.

      — Wright State hooper Grant Benzinger is the son of former big league 1B Todd Benzinger.

      — Turns out the college degree a state senator from Iowa listed on his resume was a training course from the Sizzler Steak House where he used to work. Oy.

      — Rams’ coach Sean McVay played WR at Miami, OH, after Miami alum Ben Roethlisberger had already been in the NFL for a couple of years.

      — Search the Interweb for George W Bush’s interview on Jimmy Kimmel’s show last week. Good comedy. President Bush put together a book with his paintings in it that benefits our veterans, an excellent cause.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: College tournament tidbits………

Here are some tidbits for college tournaments starting this week. Hope they help.

      13) American, Hartford— SMU won this event in 2015, their first conference tourney wins since 2006. Cincinnati went out in first round of this tourney last two years, losing in 4OT’s to UConn LY. UConn is 15-3 in its last five conference tournaments; hard to believe they’ll make much noise here, even with tourney in Hartford- they’ve run out of healthy players.

      12) ACC, Brooklyn— North Carolina won this tournament LY for first time since 2008. #2 seed Florida State won this event in 2012, went W-L last four years. Last five years, Duke is 5-5 in ACC tourney; they last won it in 2011. Duke/UNC have met only once in last 12 ACC tournaments (Duke won ’11 final).

      11) Atlantic 14, Pittsburgh— Only twice in last 13 years has top seed won this tournament. #1 seed Dayton is 5-5 in its five A-14 tourneys. Richmond is 2-5 here the last five years. St Joe’s won this two of last three years but has zero chance this year. VCU is 10-3 in this tourney last four years, but only won it once, two years ago.

      10) Big East, NYC— Top seed won this tourney only four of last 13 years; all eastern teams have won this tournament in three years since the league re-organized with five midwestern members. Butler is 0-3 in Big East tourney, Villanova is 5-1 the last two years. This is St John’s home court; last time they won a game here was 2011.

      9) Big 14, Washington— Michigan State was in finals last three years (2-1); they’re 12-2 in last five tourneys. Host Maryland last won a conference tourney in 2004. Michigan won its first tourney game the last 10 years. Last nine years, Iowa is 2-9 in this tourney. Over last decade, higher-seeded team won Big 14 title game eight of nine times (one year teams had same record).

      8) Big X, Kansas City— Kansas won last 13 regular season titles; they won this tournament seven of last 11 years. Baylor is 7-5 in this event last five years but hasn’t won it. Iowa State won it in ’14/’15, lost in first round eight of other nine years. West Virginia won Big East tourney in 2010; since then, they’re 2-6 in conference tourneys, 2-4 in this tournament.

      7) Big Sky, Reno— A top seed won this tourney last six years, but now event is more inclusive and is on a true neutral court in Reno. Weber State won Big Sky tourney two of last three years; but they come into this on a 1-4 skid. Montana won this event five times in nine years from ’05-’13, but hasn’t won it the last three years. North Dakota is top seed; this is only their 8th season of Division I basketball.

      6) Big West, Anaheim— League was awful this season, dropping from 13th to 29th in national ranking; league POY Nelson played in only 13 games this season. Can Nelson’s hamstring hold up with three games in three days? Cal-Irvine is VERY young; they’re also best team. I’m looking at Cal State-Fullerton as a sleeper here; they’ve won eight of last 10 games, have a senior PG.

      5) Conference USA, Birmingham— Three different teams won this tournament since kingpin Memphis bolted to AAC. Middle Tennessee is 30-6 in this league last two years; they’re by far best team this year. Louisiana Tech is 54-15 in four regular seasons in C-USA; they’re only 3-3 in this tournament. Host UAB comes in on a 2-6 skid; they’re 5-6 in this tourney last seven years, winning it two years ago.

      4) Mountain West, Las Vegas— Nevada, Colorado State have best teams, but also have zero depth; can one of them win three games in three days? Fresno State won this LY, after going 2-9 in previous nine tourneys. New Mexico lost its first game last two years, after winning tourney three years in row, from ’12-’14. San Diego State hasn’t won this tourney since 2011. Lower-seeded team won last three conference finals.

      3) Pac-12, T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas— Arizona is 11-5 in this tourney last six years, but has only one Pac-12 tourney title (2015). Cal is 3-6 here the last six years. Colorado won its first tourney game the last six years. Oregon is 9-2 last four years, winning tourney in ’13/’16. UCLA won this tourney once in last eight years; since ’06, they’re 15-8 in this tournament. New site this year, the big new arena in Vegas.

      2) SEC, Nashville— Kentucky is 8-1 in this tournament last three years, winning its last couple years- they’re 16-3 here last seven yearsVanderbilt is home team; they’re 0-3 in this event last three years. In six years as a head coach, Florida coach White is 73-29 in conference games; he is only 6-5 in conference tourney games.

1— Sun Belt, New Orleans— Last four years, four different schools won this tournament. Six of last seven years, tourney final was decided by 4 or less points. Texas-Arlington is best team, at 27-11 in Sun Belt last two years, but they lost here to ULM last year- lot of pressure on them. Sun Belt jumped to #15 league in country this year, its best rating in 12 years.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Tuesday, March 7

          ACC tournament, Brooklyn
If you’re playing in the ACC tournament today, you had a bad season. Except for Wake Forest

NC State fired its coach three weeks ago; they’ve lost nine of last ten games, with win by hoop at Ga Tech. Clemson started season 11-2, then lost 12 of next 15 games before winning last two; they beat NC State 78-74 at home six days ago, in only meeting this season. Teams split last eight series games. Brownell is 2-6 in ACC tourney games. Wolfpack won its first ACC tourney game the last five years. Tigers lost seven of last eight road games, with one win at Pitt; State is 2-7 in ACC road games. NC State turned ball over 19.3% of time in ACC games.

Wake Forest is 1-9 in ACC tournament the last nine years; they beat Boston College twice this year, 79-66/85-80- they were 17-36 on arc in those games. Deacons won last three games overall, went 9-9 in ACC (5 wins vs BC-NC St-GT); they’ve got shot at NCAA’s, but obviously need win here and then more wins. BC is horrible again, going 2-16 in ACC; they’re 10-62 in ACC games last four years, 1-3 in this event. Eagles lost last 14 games; their last win was Jan 11 over NC State- they do have wins over Providence and Syracuse.

Georgia Tech lost four of last six games, but one of wins was 61-52 over Pitt week ago tonight. Tech shot 55% inside arc in that game; they’re 2-3 vs Pitt in ACC games, 2-6 in ACC tourney last six years. Pastner was 11-4 in conference tourneys at Memphis, with three titles. Pitt lost its last four games, scoring 52-42 points in last two games. Pitt is just 3-8 in conference tourneys the last eight years. Stallings was 13-13 in SEC tourney his last 14 years at Vanderbilt; he won SEC tourney in 2012. Wake is best team in ACC at getting to the foul line.

          Big Sky tournament, Reno
Until recently, only top half of league qualified for this tournament

Portland State lost nine of its last 12 games, with four losses in OT; home side won both their games with Northern Arizona this year. Vikings forced 43 NAU turnovers in two games, but they were -25 n boards in loss in Flagstaff. PSU is #22 experience team in country, but Big Sky teams shot 55% inside arc against them this year. Lumberjacks lost six of last nine games; they lost nine of last ten games away from home. Portland State is 7-1 in its first conference tourney games- they start three seniors and two juniors.

Sacramento State is 5-3 in its last eight games; they won their first Big Sky tourney game the last two years, by 10-4 points. Hornets beat Idaho State 75-63 at home Feb 11, only meeting this year, game Vikings led by 12 at half- they’re 5-2 in last seven games overall with ISU. Idaho State lost its last eight games; 0-2 in Big Sky tourney games the last seven years. Bengals’ last tourney win was in ’09. Sac State plays slowest tempo in league; ISU plays 3rd-fastest. PG for Idaho State is Ethan Telfair, brother of the former NBA guard.

Montana State went 10-3 in its last 13 games after starting season 6-12; Bobcats won 83-78 at Southern Utah Feb 13, in only meeting this year; MSU forced 23 turnovers (+12), were 11-27 on arc. Montana State is 7-1 vs Thunderbirds in Big Sky play. SUU lost 15 of last 16 games, with one win over NAU; T’birds allowed 84+ points in each of last four games. MSU is 0-5 in Big Sky tourney the last seven years; their last tourney win was in ’09. Bengals is 0-2 in tourney the last seven years; their last win was also in ’09.

          Horizon tournament, Detroit
Milwaukee had lost nine games in row coming into Horizon tourney; now #10 seed Panthers are playing for 4th time in five nights for conference title. Northern Kentucky won 11 of its last 13 games; they split with Milwaukee this year, losing by 10 on road Jan 12 (game was tied at half), then winning rematch by 6 at home Feb 11- they were down 8 at half. NKU used three starters 38:00+ last nite, a 4th starter 33:00- they were up 15 at half, not real stressful game. Panthers used used only two kids more than 27:00 last nite. Game will be in a large, mostly empty arena.

          Summit tournament, Sioux Falls

South Dakota State is in Summit final for 5th time in last six years; they had emotional 74-71 win over its arch-rival last night; Jackrabbits were down 11 at half, took lead with 0:01.5 left. Visitors won both SD State-Omaha games this year; Mavericks led 55-34 at half of 101-93 win on road Jan 7 (Omaha was 16-35 on arc), then Jackrabbits won rematch 88-84 three weeks later- they were 11-30 on arc. Omaha shoots 42.6% on arc in Summit games, best in league. Jackrabbits shoot 56% inside the arc, also best in league. State will have big crowd edge in this game.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ACC Conference Tournament first round betting preview
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have scored 61 points or fewer in each of their last three games - six below their season average.
The ACC is the first of the major college basketball conferences to get their conference tournament underway, with the first round tipping off Tuesday afternoon. N.C. State takes on Clemson, Boston College battles Wake Forest, and Pittsburgh draws Georgia Tech.

Tournament to be played at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

North Carolina State Wolfpack vs Clemson Tigers (-6.5, 151)

                * N.C. State won at Duke on Jan. 23 and appeared to be ready for a run, but they were never good enough defensively while allowing an ACC-most 79.7 points per game. Smith scored just 13 in each of the last two games, but he has ample offensive support from senior guard Terry Henderson (13.9), sophomore guard Maverick Rowan (11.9) and junior forward Abdul-Malik Abu (11.7, team-high 7.0 rebounds). Freshman guard Markell Johnson suffered a knee injury Wednesday and will be a game-time decision.

                * Clemson averaged 80 points in the last two games of the regular season and shot 54.5 percent from the field in Saturday’s 82-68 triumph against Boston College. Senior forward Jaron Blossomgame (17.3 points) leads the way while Holmes (11.0), a senior guard, tops the team with 66 makes from 3-point range and sophomore backcourt mate Shelton Mitchell averaged 14.8 the last four games. Sophomore Marcquise Reed (10.2 points) is also productive while senior center Sidy Djitte leads the team in rebounds (7.3).

                Betting Stats:

                N.C. State - 15-16 SU, 11-17 ATS, 16-12 O/U

                Clemson - 16-14 SU, 12-14-2 ATS, 16-12 O/U

                Trends:

                * Wolfpack are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
                * Tigers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite of 0.5-6.5.
                * Under is 4-0 in Wolfpack last 4 games as an underdog.
                * Under is 4-0 in Tigers last 4 vs. Atlantic Coast.

Boston College Eagles vs. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (-13, 157.5)

                * B.C. coach Jim Christian said in the wake of the loss to Clemson that "we've got a good foundation now," and it is no secret that he's referring to guards Jerome Robinson and Ky Bowman. Robinson, a sophomore, finished fourth in the ACC in scoring (18.7) and was an All-ACC honorable mention pick, while Bowman was part of the conference's All-Freshman team after averaging 14.5 points and shooting 44.5 percent from 3-point distance. The Eagles, who were ousted in the opening round last season, have allowed at least 82 points in nine of their last 10 games.

                * Wake's John Collins was limited to 13 points and nine boards in the win over Virginia Tech on Saturday as he wrestled with foul trouble, but guard Bryant Crawford carried the load with 26 points. Crawford (15.8) ranks second to Collins on the team's scoring list and fellow sophomore Keyshawn Woods (12.8) is third. Austin Arians and Mitchell Wilbekin combined for 94 3-pointers while shooting a collective 40.3 percent from beyond the arc for the ACC's third-ranked offense (82.1).

Clemson enters Tuesday's matchup as a six-point favorite. These teams just met on March 1 at Littlejohn Arena in the upstate, with the Tigers winning 78-74 and the Wolfpack covering a nine-point number. This could very well be the swan song of head coach Mark Gottfried, who has already been fired but allowed to coach to the end of the season. The Pack have dropped nine of their past 10 games and they're just 2-8 ATS during the span. The 'under' has connected in four in a row for State. Clemson has picked on the teams they're supposed to beat, covering two of their past eight against teams with a losing overall record.

The Demon Deacons roll into this one on a three-game winning streak, and their win over Louisville has some thinking potential NCAA Tournament bid. However, the Deacs likely need to win at least two or three games in this tournament before realistically getting a chance to dance. They swept the regular season series against the Eagles, winning by 13 on their home floor, and by five in Chestnut Hill. The Eagles covered in both outings, however. Covering is not a strong suit of B.C., however, as they are 0-4 ATS in their past four outings and 2-10 ATS in their past 12 neutral-site affairs. The Deacs are 3-1-1 ATS in their past five on a neutral court, but just 8-20 ATS in their past 28 as a favorite.

It was a difficult season for both of these proud programs and they're not used to playing as lower seeds on tournament day. Pitt enters as a 1 1/2-point favorite despite the fact the Yellow Jackets just topped the Panthers 61-52 back on Feb. 28. It was the only win in the past four tries for the Jackets. However, they're an impressive 5-2 ATS over their past seven games, and 11-4 ATS over their past 15 overall. The Panthers enter play on a four-game skid, and they have failed to cover their past three. If anything has been consistent about Pittsburgh it is the 'under', cashing in each of their past six, and nine of their past 11. The 'under' is also 3-1 in Tech's past four, including the game against the Panthers which went under the total by 21 points.

                  • Shockers lead early NCAA bids
                    March 6, 2017

NCAA Tournament: First Four Teams In

Four teams punched their NCAA Tournament tickets last weekend and can sit back and enjoy the madness this week around the country.

Here is a look at the four teams that will for certain be included in the NCAA Tournament bracket next Sunday.

Jacksonville State – Ohio Valley (20-14) Projected #16 Seed

The Gamecocks are a relatively young program and for the first time in 22 seasons Jacksonville State will be in the NCAA Tournament. There is a good chance they’ll draw a matchup against one of the #1 seeds or could possibly be lined up in a First Four matchup in Dayton to start the tournament as they were definitely a surprise champion, having gone just 9-7 in Ohio Valley play. That was a great turnaround from an 8-23 overall campaign in 2015-16 as Ray Harper led a great first season with the program after resigning after four plus season at Western Kentucky.

Belmont was the heavy favorite in the conference with a 15-1 regular season but last Friday Jacksonville State scored the upset as an 8-point underdog playing in Belmont’s home city. In the championship Jacksonville State delivered a comfortable 66-55 win over Tennessee-Martin in a game they didn’t trail in outside of an early 3-0 deficit. This squad has experience in the backcourt as seniors Erik Durham and Greg Tucker both had excellent tournaments and junior Malcolm Drumwright was the team’s leading scorer in the regular season. Norbertas Giga is a true 7-footer to give the Gamecocks rare size for a small conference program and Jacksonville State rated as the second best defense in the OVC behind Belmont.

Wichita State – Missouri Valley (30-4) Projected #7 Seed

The Shockers have nine NCAA Tournament wins in the past four seasons including a Final Four run in 2013 and a pair of wins last season after barely getting into the field as a First Four #11 seed after being upset in Arch Madness. With three wins in St. Louis last week Gregg Marshall’s team went 20-1 vs. conference foes but unlike several recent seasons the Shockers didn’t accomplish a lot in the non-conference campaign. Wins over Oklahoma and LSU were nice major conference victories but both of those programs had down seasons and Wichita State fell short in opportunities vs. Louisville, Michigan State, and Oklahoma State as the only top 50 wins are the pair of victories over Illinois State who matched the Shockers with a 17-1 regular season in a down year for the conference.

Wichita State lost three rather important seniors from last season’s squad plus freshman Ty Taylor who transferred as this season’s record was very impressive for a lineup that turned over significantly. Sophomore Markis McDuffie led the team in scoring but this is a deep team that had nine players average at least five points per game. The Shockers are still playing great defense but this year’s team plays at a much quicker pace than several recent Shockers units that rated as among the slower tempo teams in the nation. The 82.1 points per game average will put Wichita State in the top 15 of projected NCAA Tournament teams. The Shockers are also projected to be one of just six teams nationally that will finish in the top 20 nationally in both offensive and defensive efficiency, joining elite company (Gonzaga, Villanova, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Purdue). This year’s team hasn’t proven it with wins against elite competition yet but it again looks like a dangerous group that can advance.

Winthrop – Big South (26-6) Projected #14 Seed

This will be the 10th NCAA Tournament appearance for Winthrop since 1999 as this has been a consistently successful program now led by Pat Kelsey in his fifth season in Rock Hill. Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall was responsible for much of that run as this will be Kelsey’s first trip to the tournament. Winthrop finished 15-3 in conference play to tie UNC Asheville who actually rated as the slightly stronger team on both sides of the ball. Asheville wound up getting upset in the Big South Tournament against Campbell who Winthrop would beat in the title game as Winthrop was dealt a favorable path to this bid. The Eagles produced a marquee win over Illinois in November while also playing respectably against Florida State in a 14-point road loss and Dayton in a 16-point road loss as a competitive showing in a likely tough opening game is possible.

This is an up-tempo squad that takes a lot of three-point shots and averaged nearly 80 points per game. Diminutive senior guard Keon Johnson scored 22.5 points per game and carried the team down the stretch scoring over 26 points per game over the past 10 games despite a 5’7” 160 pound frame. Junior guard Xavier Cooks is more than a foot taller than Johnson and that duo accounted for almost half of the team’s points on the season. Winthrop was an 11-seed when they upset Notre Dame in the 2007 tournament playing as only a 4-point underdog for the program’s lone NCAA Tournament win. This year’s team will likely face a steeper number this season and in the right matchup they could be a threat to be an opening weekend Cinderella.

Florida Gulf Coast – Atlantic Sun (26-7) Projected #14 Seed

Dunk City was a great story in 2013 as #15 seed Florida Gulf Coast in only its sixth season as a division I program upset Georgetown and San Diego State to advance to the Sweet 16. Andy Enfield took that publicity to a payday at USC but Joe Dooley had the Eagles back in the Big Dance last season, getting a First Four win over Fairleigh Dickinson before giving eventual national runner-up North Carolina a bit of a scare in a game that was 41-40 at halftime. This year’s team started 1-3 but the win was a quality result over UT-Arlington and the losses were against top competition Florida, Baylor, and Michigan State, including just a one-point miss in East Lansing. Decent wins over Siena, Georgia Southern, and Louisiana Tech filled out the non-conference campaign and the Eagles won the regular season and Atlantic Sun Tournament titles, mostly untested last week with three double-digit wins.

The 2013 Sweet 16 squad was one of the fastest paced teams in the nation but the program has changed course under Dooley, still scoring over 79 points per game but less reliant on 3-point shooting and running more deliberate sets at a controlled pace. Junior guard Brandon Goodwin led the team with over 18 points per game but this was not a strong outside shooting team. Florida Gulf Coast led the Atlantic Sun in defensive efficiency and was an effective at defending 3-point shots this season holding foes to just over 31 percent and they’ll need to maintain that proficiency to win another NCAA Tournament game this season.

                    • Gonzaga, St. Mary's in WCC Final
                      March 7, 2017

Nigel Williams-Goss scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Przemek Karnowski added 19 points and seven rebounds in No. 4 Gonzaga's 77-68 win over Santa Clara in a West Coast Conference tournament semifinal game Monday night in Las Vegas.

Gonzaga (31-1) struggled to put away Santa Clara (17-16) after defeating the Broncos by scores of 88-57 and 90-55 during the regular season.

The Bulldogs advance to the tournament championship game Tuesday against No. 19 Saint Mary's.

Jared Brownridge scored a game-high 32 points for Santa Clara, which trailed by only 68-63 with 2:01 left after a Brownridge layup.

                      No. 19 Saint Mary's 81, BYU 50

Jock Landale scored a game-high 22 points, and Saint Mary's made 13 shots from 3-point range as the Gaels beat the Cougars in the second WCC semifinal at Las Vegas.

Landale also finished with 10 rebounds for Saint Mary's (28-3). Three other Gaels reached double figures in points. Calvin Hermanson had 14 points and six rebounds. Tanner Krebs added 11 points, and Emmett Naar had 12 points and 11 assists.

BYU (22-11) got a team-high 13 points from T.J. Haws, but he struggled from the field, making only 5 of 14 shots. Elijah Bryant contributed 11 points, and Eric Mika finished with 10.

No. 12 Mississippi State vs. No. 13 LSU (SECN, 7:00 p.m. ET)

LSU stumbled to a 2-16 conference record following last season’s exciting campaign with eventual top pick Ben Simmons. The Tigers lost 16 of their final 17 games, but put together a 5-3 ATS mark away from Baton Rouge in that span. LSU faces Mississippi State, as the Bulldogs knocked off the Tigers twice this season, including an 88-76 victory in Starkville this past weekend. The Tigers have struggled from a defensive standpoint by cashing the OVER in 19 of the past 22 games, including five straight road contests. MSU began SEC play with an impressive 3-1 mark, but Ben Howland’s squad managed to win three games the rest of the way, while dropping seven consecutive contests away from Starkville.

Auburn improved from a 5-13 conference mark in 2016 to a 7-11 record inside the SEC this season. Two of those victories for the Tigers came against another Tigers’ squad, pulling off the season sweep of Missouri. Auburn closed out the regular season with an 89-78 home victory over Missouri as 8 ½-point favorites, as Bruce Pearl’s squad looks for a repeat effort in the 2015 SEC tournament in which the Tigers advanced all the way to the championship game. Mizzou limped to a 2-16 record inside the conference, while picking up only one victory in 13 tries away from Columbia this season. Kim Anderson’s team covered in six of its final nine games, while playing in its first SEC tournament since 2015 following a postseason ban last season.
