  • Thursday's Elite Eight
    January 19, 2017

A look at the day's top eight college basketball matchups, ranked in order of most attractive.

    THURSDAY, JAN. 19

    Matchup Records Skinny Projection

    California
    Overall: 13-5 SU, 7-11 ATS
    Pac-12: 4-2 SU, 3-3 ATS
    Totals: 8-10 O/U

    Oregon
    Overall: 16-2 SU, 9-8 ATS
    Pac-12: 5-0 SU, 5-0 ATS
    Totals: 7-10 O/U

    California at Oregon, 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2

Cal has beaten Oregon four consecutive years despite being unranked each time. They’re hoping that exact scenario plays out tonight against a Ducks squad that has only opened Pac-12 play a perfect 5-0. After a riveting win over UCLA courtesy of a Dillon Brooks’ buzzer-beater, Oregon has won its last four games by an average margin of 84.25-to-57.75. They destroyed rival Oregon State over the weekend 85-43 and are putting their elite depth to good use now that everyone is healthy. In the Bears, they’ll face a team led by the league’s most talented forward, 6-foot-11 Ivan Rabb, whose 17.6 points and 13.8 boards this month have been highlighted by 57 percent 3-point shooting. Like Ducks standout Chris Boucher, he can spread the floor and is a menace at both ends. It’s definitely helped Rabb to get center Kameron Rooks back from a knee injury. The junior 7-footer has averaged only 4 points and 5.3 rebounds over his last three games, but blocked three shots at Washington State and can certainly be a difference-maker as he gets back in a rhythm. These teams field two of the nation’s top defenses. Oregon ranks 12th in field goal percentage defense (38.4 pct), while Cal comes in just behind in 13th (38.5). In addition to the bigs battling in the paint, this matchup will also be highlighted by Brooks squaring off against Cal senior wing Jabari Bird, who aims to bounce back from shooting 1-for-7 in Saturday’s 58-54 win over Washington State, where he helped keep the Cougs in it by missing five of his six 3-point attempts.

    Arizona
    Overall: 16-2 SU, 9-7-2 ATS
    Pac-12: 5-0 SU, 2-1-2 ATS
    Totals: 9-8-1 O/U

    USC
    Overall: 16-3 SU, 9-9 ATS
    Pac-12: 3-3 SU, 2-4 ATS
    Totals: 9-9 O/U

    Arizona at USC, 9 p.m. ET, Pac-12

Wednesday’s big news in college basketball revolved around the statement issued by elite Arizona shooting guard Allonzo Trier, who finally disclosed why he hasn’t been playing. The sophomore wing has yet to play this season because he tested positive for a PED and won’t be cleared to play until the drug leaves his system entirely. Although the ‘Cats have missed him, they’ve won 10 straight games since a loss to Gonzaga at Staples to open December, which puts them in position to realize all their preseason goals despite being without their best player. Finnish 7-footer Lauri Markkanen has emerged as Arizona’s go-to guy and looks like a NBA lottery pick, coming off a career-high 30-point effort on 120for-18 shooting against rival Arizona State. Markkanen is shooting 12-for-19 from 3-point range in 2017. Yes, he’s 7-feet tall. The ‘Cats dished out 25 assists on their 34 field goals against the Sun Devils, their highest total since 2009. USC snapped a two-game losing streak on Sunday with a 71-68 win at Colorado to get back to .500 in league play. The Trojans defeated Arizona at home last season 103-101 in a memorable game that went four overtimes. Elijah Stewart’s two late free-throws provided the winning margin, but he’s been mired in a shooting slump in 2017, missing 10 of his 12 3-pointers thus far this month. Four of Arizona's last five games have gone over the posted total. This will be only their fourth true road game and are 2-0 as a road favorite. USC is a home underdog for the first time this season.

    Richmond
    Overall: 11-6 SU, 7-5-1 ATS
    A-10: 5-0 SU, 4-0-1 ATS
    Totals: 6-7 O/U

    Dayton
    Overall: 13-4 SU, 10-5 ATS
    A-10: 4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS
    Totals: 6-9 O/U

Richmond at Dayton, 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU

The Spiders have already achieved something unprecedented in program history by opening A-10 play with five straight wins, but this is their opportunity to prove they’re truly for real. A win at Dayton would put Richmond two games up on everyone in the league besides LaSalle, which hosts Davidson in a difficult contest at the same time this game is going off. Senior forward T.J. Cline (17.8 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 5.3 apg) helps the Spiders go since he’s a marvelous passer at 6-foot-9, making their Princeton-style offense all the more effective. He fell one assist shy of a triple-double in Saturday’s 70-66 win at Saint Joseph’s, and has been at his best on the road in league play, averaging 17.7 points, 10.3 boards and 8.0 assists in leading Richmond to wins at Davidson, George Washington and St. Joe’s. Cline averaged 30.5 in two losses against the Flyers last March. Dayton leads the A-10 in points allowed in league play (63.4), but has been working shorthanded due to a number of injury concerns, losing top rim protector Josh Cunningham way back in November while seeing key glue guys Charles Cooke and Kendall Pollard miss time with nagging ailments. Those two are back and getting into a rhythm, but guard Kyle Davis, another invaluable piece to the puzzle, may be out with an ankle injury. The ‘under’ is 8-2 in Dayton’s last 10 games and has come in through Richmond’s last two.

    Clemson
    Overall: 11-6 SU, 7-7-1 ATS
    ACC: 1-4 SU, 1-3-1 ATS
    Totals: 9-6 O/U

    Louisville
    Overall: 15-3 SU, 11-5 ATS
    ACC: 3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS
    Totals: 4-12 O/U

Clemson at Louisville, 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

Despite a promising non-conference start that featured wins over South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia and Davidson and put an improved offense on display, the Tigers have had a terrible 2017. They got ACC play off to a strong start with a road win at Wake Forest on Dec. 31, but haven’t won since and enter this contest looking up at everyone in the conference except Pittsburgh. Clemson could really use an upset here to get back on track and can build off a strong showing in Saturday’s 77-73 loss to talented Virginia. They’ll catch a break here because Louisville begins a stretch where they’ll have to play without point guard Quentin Snider for at least two weeks due to a strained hip flexor. Snider and Donovan Mitchell have formed an extremely solid backcourt for Rick Pitino, but guard depth isn’t something this particular Louisville squad is blessed with, which makes getting through the next few weeks extremely challenging. Freshman Ryan McMahon, who averages just 5.5 minutes per game, is projected to start despite not playing a second of Saturday’s 78-69 home win over Duke. Junior center Anas Mahmoud had his best game ever, coming up with career-highs of 17 points and 11 boards to help the Cardinals hold serve as a 3.5-point favorite. The ‘Ville lost its conference opener at home against Virginia but is usually rock-solid at the Yum! Center, so they’ll have to hope that a friendly atmosphere can help get them through their first game without Snider, who will really be missed in this weekend’s showdown with Florida State in Tallahassee. Clemson defeated the Cardinals last year in South Carolina.

    Maryland
    Overall: 16-2 SU, 10-7 ATS
Big Ten: 4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS
    Totals: 6-11 O/U

    Iowa
    Overall: 11-8 SU, 6-9-1 ATS
Big Ten: 3-3 SU, 2-4 ATS
    Totals: 7-8-1 O/U
Maryland at Iowa, 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

The Terps join Wisconsin atop the Big Ten and will look to remain perfect on the road in league play after taking down Michigan and Illinois on successive Saturdays. Melo Trimble has gotten significant help from freshman point guard Anthony Cowan, who has taken some pressure off him by supplying ball-handling and on-ball defense at a high level. Maryland is 6-1 SU/ATS since mid-December, losing only to Nebraska at home, 67-66, in OT. The Terrapins could be back at full strength with center Michal Cekovsky set to return from an ankle injury after having his walking boot removed. Despite being a slight favorite at home, the Hawkeyes have been all over the place this season, a product of their youth. Senior wing Peter Jok has provided the firepower by averaging nearly 22 points per game, but his supporting cast has been inconsistent from game to game and failed to show up in Sunday’s brutal 89-54 loss at Northwestern. As you might expect, Iowa has been sharper at home, owning seven consecutive wins at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, including takedowns of Iowa State, Michigan and Purdue. Jok was held to a season-low four points by the Wildcats and was battling a back injury, but he’s expected to play in this one. Iowa has asked fans to wear gold and hopes its home crowd can again supply a boost in helping knock off another quality visitor.

    Memphis
    Overall: 13-5 SU, 6-7 ATS
    American: 3-2 SU, 2-3 ATS
    Totals: 6-7 O/U

    Houston
    Overall: 14-5 SU, 7-7 ATS
    American: 4-2 SU, 3-3 ATS
    Totals: 5-9 O/U

Memphis at Houston, 9 p.m. ET, CBS SN

While both of these teams will be lucky to remain on the bubble to hear their name called on Selection Sunday, both are enjoying solid seasons. The Cougars won 22 games last year under Kelvin Sampson in reaching the NIT, while the Tigers are already on pace to surpass their victory total from each of their past two seasons since Tubby Smith has hit the ground running. Robert Gray has been Houston’s go-to guy the past two seasons and leads the way with 20.8 points per game, so Memphis must find ways to keep him from getting to his spots. Gray is shooting over 49 percent, nearly 40 percent from 3-point range and over 80 percent from the free-throw line, so he’s a handful. The Tigers have ridden twins Dedric Lawson (20.2 ppg, 10.5 rpg) and KJ Lawson (12.1, 7.8) in addition to guards Jeremiah Martin and Markel Crawford, but lack depth. That’s going to be a concern on the road, especially since the versatile Dameyan Dotson and Galen Robinson, Jr. will make the Lawsons work for everything they get. The Tigers shoot just 31 percent from 3-point range and must have either Crawford or Craig Randall II provide a spark from the perimeter to get out of Houston with an upset. The Cougars are hoping to get Devin Davis back from a foot injury that has kept him out of the last four games. The 6-7 forward was averaging 10.1 points and 6.2 rebounds in just under 20 minutes of action before getting hurt, so his return would provide a huge boost.

    UConn
    Overall: 7-10 SU, 5-9 ATS
    American: 2-3 SU, 1-4 ATS
    Totals: 5-8 O/U

    SMU
    Overall: 15-4 SU, 9-4-1 ATS
    American: 5-1 SU, 4-1-1 ATS
    Totals: 7-7 O/U

    UConn at SMU, 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2

Any other year, this would be much higher up this list as one of the American’s elite offerings for the entire season, but the injury-depleted Huskies aren’t holding up their end of the bargain. Although UConn handed UCF its only loss in league play thus far, it definitely has the look of a bottom-tier team in the conference and comes off a disappointing 72-69 road loss against former Big East rival Georgetown over the weekend. UConn has been forced to toil without starting guards Alterique Gilbert (shoulder) and Terry Larrier since mid-November, which has put too much of the burden on Jalen Adams and Rodney Purvis. Not only do those guys get little rest in games, they’ve worn down in contributing to tight losses against Ohio State, Auburn, Tulsa and the aforementioned Hoyas. With no relief in sight, the Huskies visit Dallas looking to snap a three-game road losing streak at SMU, coming off an 80-54 loss there last March. The Mustangs also have depth issues, often going with a six-man rotation in their first year under Tim Jankovich, who was head coach in waiting and stepped right in when Larry Brown surprisingly resigned. Duke transfer Semi Ojeleye is averaging a team-best 17.7 points to lead five SMU players scoring in double-figures. Since a puzzling loss to Boise State to end November, the Mustangs have gone 11-1, losing only at Cincinnati 66-64 on Jan. 12. SMU has won each of its last seven home games by at least 14 points.

    Gonzaga
    Overall: 17-0 SU, 12-2 ATS
    WCC: 5-0 SU, 5-0 ATS

    Santa Clara
    Overall:10-9 SU, 8-9 ATS
    WCC: 4-2 SU, 3-3 ATS
    Totals: 5-11-1 O/U

Gonzaga at Santa Clara, 11 p.m. ET, ESPNU

The Bulldogs are relishing in being the lone remaining undefeated team in the country and come off their most impressive win of the season, trouncing Saint Mary's 79-56 in Spokane in a battle of WCC unbeatens. Gonzaga dominated from the perimeter and took advantage of its edge in athleticism to overwhelm the Gaels. Although the rematch in Moraga on Feb. 11 will be tough and a visit to BYU should also be challenging, the Zags now look like they'll be favored in every regular-season the rest of the way, which means they can become the fourth team to reach the NCAA Tournament with a perfect record if they hold serve. This will be only Gonzaga's third true road game of the season and pits Mark Few against Herb Sendek, who has had a solid run in his first season at the helm at Santa Clara, which comes in even with BYU at 4-2 for third place in the West Coast Conference. The Bulldogs have beaten the Broncos 12 consecutive times, but will have to deal with reigning WCC Player of the Week Jared Brownridge, who scored 30 points in a weekend win over Pepperdine and beat San Diego on a buzzer-beater. He went 12-for-23 from 3-point range and has helped Santa Clara go 4-1 since getting back point guard KJ Feagin from a foot injury earlier this month. Counterpart Nigel Williams-Goss, a Washington transfer, leads Gonzaga in scoring (15.2), assists (4.9) and steals (1.7) while ranking just behind center Prez Karnowski (5.9) for the team lead in rebounding (5.8).

    • Big Ten Snapshot
      January 18, 2017

Not even a third of the way into the Big Ten season and every team has a loss in what looks like a balanced group of teams in a league that appears a bit down from its normal national stature. 0-6 Rutgers appears to be at the bottom to stay but the other 13 teams could shuffle around quite a bit in the coming weeks with 10 teams currently separated by just two games in the middle of the standings.

The Big Ten currently projects to have as many as eight NCAA Tournament teams but none of those teams would currently be top four seeds in the field and only three teams currently crack the current Top 25 polls, all outside of the top 15. Here is a look at those eight teams leading the conference as we approach late January.

Favorite – Wisconsin (4-1 S/U, 3-2 ATS): The Badger program has continued a high level of success in Greg Gard’s first full season with a 15-3 overall record and the lone conference loss came in a competitive game at Purdue right after the team picked up a key road win at Indiana. Wisconsin’s track record in recent years carries some weight for a veteran group that returned all the key contributors from last season’s Sweet 16 team. This year’s non-conference slate didn’t feature any high end wins and right now, Wisconsin doesn’t have a win over a team that would be considered in the nation’s top 25. The Badgers face Maryland and Michigan State just once each and they won’t have to play Purdue again as 14-4 looks pretty realistic for this team and in a balanced league that should be enough to be at the top.

Contender – Purdue (4-2 S/U, 3-3 ATS): The two losses for Purdue have been a bit puzzling in league play, blowing a big lead and falling at home in overtime vs. Minnesota and then losing on the road against a very young Iowa squad. The non-conference losses for Purdue came vs. Villanova and Louisville in very close games with Purdue also beating Notre Dame in December as the Boilermakers are on pace for a fine season looking to redeem last season’s early upset loss in the NCAA Tournament. Two early losses in Big Ten play may not be all that damaging for Purdue as the remaining Big Ten schedule is favorable. Purdue won’t play either of the teams they lost to again and they will have the tiebreaker over Wisconsin winning the lone meeting this season. Four games ahead with Indiana and Michigan State will likely determine whether Purdue claims the conference title or is a runner-up.

Overachiever – Maryland (4-1 S/U, 4-1 ATS): The Terrapins were supposed to be a nationally elite squad last season with a star-studded starting five. Twenty-seven wins and a Sweet 16 run wasn’t a bad season but it was a mild disappointment for a team that started the season ranked in the top 5. This year’s team has matched last season’s 16-2 start as junior guard Melo Trimble leads a really young squad that has also had to play without two contributors in the Big Ten season due to injuries. Maryland’s only loss came at home and outside of the three-point win over Indiana they haven’t faced the top teams in the conference. Working in Maryland’s favor is a schedule that includes just one meeting each with Purdue, Wisconsin, and Michigan State, but the 4-1 ATS mark could erode in the coming weeks for a team that has squeaked out nine of 16 wins by seven or fewer points.

Sleeper – Northwestern (4-2 S/U, 4-2 ATS): The Wildcats have never made the NCAA Tournament and while right now they would probably get in, there is a lot of work to be done. The 4-2 Big Ten start lacks high end wins and non-conference wins over Texas, Wake Forest, and Dayton aren’t looking quite as strong at this point in the season. Northwestern is still a threat to be part of the Big Ten race however as the 4-2 start has come with four road games already taken care of, getting three wins. The Wildcats do draw two games with Purdue ahead but they will face Wisconsin and Maryland just once each and they won’t have to face Michigan State or Minnesota again. A double-digit conference win season looks likely with the remaining path and this is a year where 12-6 might realistically be enough to be in serious contention in the Big Ten if there are some upsets at the top.

Bubble Squad – Minnesota (3-3 S/U, 3-3 ATS): Many were surprised that Richard Pitino survived last season’s ugly 8-23 season that featured only two Big Ten wins. The Gophers were much more competitive than the record showed however with nine conference losses by single-digits. Minnesota impressed in the non-conference schedule this fall with the only loss coming at Florida State and a 3-1 start in Big Ten play with the only loss in overtime announced the Gophers as contenders. After entering the Top 25, the Gophers lost back-to-back road games at Michigan State and at Penn State and they have many tough remaining games. Minnesota won’t have to face Purdue or Northwestern again, but two meetings each with Wisconsin and Maryland remain. The Gophers beat a number of decent, but not great teams in the non-conference campaign as a NCAA Tournament berth will come down to putting together a winning season in the Big Ten.

Underachiever – Indiana (2-3 S/U, 2-3 ATS): The good news for Indiana is that the overtime loss to Fort Wayne from November might be a top 100 loss by season’s end as the Mastadons look like a contender in the Summit League. Indiana’s wins over Kansas and North Carolina will also continue to carry a ton of weight as even in a down season for the Big Ten Indiana’s NCAA Tournament candidacy will still be alive and well as long as they can finish with a .500 conference season. Right now that looks somewhat challenging with two home losses and one of the tougher remaining conference schedules. Indiana still draws Purdue twice while still facing tough road games at Northwestern, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ohio State. The Hoosiers will close the season with road games in four of the final five as the lousy start has come with four of five conference games at Assembly Hall. The talent and offensive potential for Indiana is there and the Hoosiers are capable of a great run the rest of the way but that type of consistency hasn’t been the norm under Tom Crean.

Enigma – Michigan State (4-2 S/U, 4-2 ATS): The Spartans played a brutally tough non-conference schedule and lost four of the first eight games of the season. Those defeats all came against Top 25 caliber teams but three of the four weren’t that competitive and Michigan State also lost at home to Northeastern in December with only a win over Wichita State standing out on the non-conference resume. Injuries and inexperience were factors and many trust Tom Izzo’s track record to put Michigan State back in Big Ten contention as usual. It looked that way with a 3-0 league start but Michigan State has since lost to Penn State and Ohio State. The Spartans haven’t played Indiana, Purdue, or Wisconsin yet and the statistics feature alarming numbers in turnovers and free throw shooting very uncharacteristic of Izzo squads. The next month figures to feature a bunch of toss-up type of games for the Spartans as this year’s team could go either way.

Dark Horse – Michigan (2-4 S/U, 1-5 ATS): The Wolverines have been a disappointment with a veteran squad that is now just 12-7 on the season with a tough start in Big Ten play. Michigan played right with Wisconsin on the road this week and has the potential for a strong finish with the typical strengths of John Beilein teams featuring a deliberate pace but strong shooting and ball control. Michigan has been burned by opponents shooting nearly 43 percent on 3-points shots this season and while the Wolverines have a difficult remaining schedule they are capable of beating anyone. The non-conference schedule is proving to be stronger than expected with teams like Marquette, South Carolina, and UCLA exceeding expectations and the opportunity to add quality wins in Big Ten play will be there with upcoming tests against Indiana, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Purdue as a run back to the NCAA Tournament is possible.

Big Ten ATS Notes: Home underdogs in Big Ten play are currently 6-3 S/U and 7-2 ATS counting Penn State’s Palestra win over Michigan State. There have been eight outright wins from road underdogs in league play. Overall, Northwestern has been the league’s best ATS performer at 11-5 ATS with Michigan the worst at 5-11 ATS. Indiana won the Big Ten last season with a 15-3 regular season record going 10-8 ATS.

      • Preview: Terrapins (16-2) at Hawkeyes (11-8)
        Date: January 19, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

With one-third of Big Ten play in the books, a somewhat unlikely team is currently atop the standings.

In a conference where Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana and Michigan State were considered the favorites, the 25th-ranked Maryland Terrapins sit in first place entering Thursday's game at Iowa.

The Terrapins (16-2, 4-1) got to this point by winning three straight games after a shocking loss at home to Nebraska. The most recent victory came last weekend when Maryland defeated Illinois 62-56 in Champaign, Ill.

This winning streak was enough to propel the Terrapins back into the Top 25 for the first time since entering the season ranked 25th.

"It's a new experience," Maryland guard Kevin Huerter said to the Baltimore Sun. "We were ranked for it seemed like a week at the beginning of the year, but it doesn't really change anything.

" ... We can't let the number in front of our name on TV bother us. We've still got to come in and work every day and get wins."

While the Terrapins enter Thursday's game against the Hawkeyes in first place, playing a second straight road game against a team that's 3-0 at home in Big Ten play and possesses the conference's leading scorer in guard Peter Jok.

There will be plenty for challenges for Maryland coach Mark Turgeon and his squad.

"We've got a tough stretch ahead of us," Turgeon said to the Sun. "In every season, unless you've got superior talent, you have your ups and downs. We haven't had our downs yet. Hopefully, we don't."

As for the Hawkeyes, they have had plenty of ups and downs since conference play began. The best such evidence of the roller coaster came last week. Iowa followed an 83-78 home upset of then-No. 17 Purdue by going to Northwestern and getting slaughtered by 35 points last weekend.

The most surprising part of the Hawkeyes' 89-54 loss to the Wildcats was the play of the aforementioned Jok, who only played 21 minutes and was 2 of 9 from the floor en route to a season-low four points.

"Any time he plays poorly, he takes it personal and that's what the great ones do," Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said to reporters on Tuesday. "They should. I never want them to feel blame. I'm not going to blame them.

"And at some point, you don't want them to blame themselves too much because sometimes the biggest problem you have is they're too tough on themselves."

For the players themselves, their challenge is putting that loss to Northwestern behind them and working toward finding the consistency they've lacked since the start of Big Ten play.

"At the end of the day, we've already been through 18 or so games," guard Jordan Bohannon said. "We know what it's like in the Big Ten. We just have to have that consistent mindset every day."

        • Preview: Golden Bears (13-5) at Ducks (16-2)
          Date: January 19, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon's streak of 14 consecutive wins include five in a row to open the Pac-12 Conference schedule.

Yet after a buzzer-beater to defeat No. 3 UCLA, the Ducks have won four straight, by an average margin of 26.5 points, over team currently out of the Top 25. All four of those opponents are sixth or worse in the Pac-12.

The schedule is about to get tougher for Oregon.

The 13th-ranked Ducks (16-2, 5-0 Pac-12) are home against fourth-place California (13-5, 4-2) on Thursday before hosting Stanford on Saturday. Oregon goes back on the road Jan. 26 to play at fifth-place Utah (12-5, 3-2).

"We are at home for three straight games and then the schedule after next week really flips on us," said Oregon coach Dana Altman, whose team drilled visiting Oregon State 85-43 on Saturday. "We have to get ready for California on Thursday."

Oregon is tied for first in the Pac-12 with Arizona, while UCLA is one-half game back at 5-1.

"We know we have to get better because everyone else is," Oregon guard Casey Benson said "Arizona, UCLA, everyone is getting better. It is exciting to know we have room to grow and get better. We have to maintain our focus and keep each other accountable."

Oregon would match the school record with a 15th straight win if they can beat the Bears. The Ducks have the second-longest active home winning streak in the NCAA at 36 straight.

With all those accomplishments, Oregon also is maintaining a selfless attitude.

Benson started all 38 games during Oregon's run to the Elite Eight last season before coming off the bench for the past 14 games. Senior center Chris Boucher is averaging 13.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, but he has adapted to a role off the bench in the past five games.

"Chris came up to me before the game and said, 'Coach, I don't know what you want to do with the starting lineup, but if you want to bring me off the bench and start the guys you have been starting, that's great,'" Altman said after the Saturday game. "That shows you how unselfish he is."

The 6-foot-10 Boucher moved to the bench to make way in the starting unit for preseason All-America forward Dillon Brooks, who missed the first three games of the season following offseason foot surgery and played in a reserve role during his first five games of his return.

Brooks is averaging 13.6 points per game as Oregon has five players scoring in double digits. Guard Tyler Dorsey averages 12.7 points, and guard Dylan Ennis is at 11.8. Forward Jordan Bell leads the team with 8.0 rebounds per game to go with 10.2 points.

California has bounced back from a 1-2 start in conference play to win three straight games after rallying for a 58-54 win over Washington State on Saturday.

"I thought we made plays defensively that took certain guys away and we did a good job of exploiting matchups on the other end as well," California sophomore forward Ivan Rabb said. "In the end, a win is a win."

Rabb leads the Bears with 15.6 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. Freshman Charlie Moore is averaging 14.6 points and a team-leading 3.1 assists, while senior guard Jabari Bird is scoring 13.4 points per game after registering his 1,000th career point in the win over the Cougars.

          • Preview: Wildcats (16-2) at Trojans (16-3)
            Date: January 19, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES -- No. 14 Arizona will carry a 10-game winning streak and a chip on its shoulder into Thursday's game against Southern California.

The Wildcats (16-2, 5-0), however, have lost two of their last three games and four of their last six against Southern Cal (16-3, 3-3) at the Galen Center. The most recent clash was a remarkable 103-101 quadruple-overtime loss on Jan. 9 last season.

Freshman guard Allonzo Trier was Arizona's star that time, recording 25 points, six rebounds and four assists in 53 minutes. He played the final three overtimes despite suffering a fractured bone in his right hand in the first overtime.

Seven-foot Finnish freshman forward Lauri Markkanen has taken over for Trier, who has not played this season for undisclosed reasons. Coach Sean Miller called Trier's absence a "once-on-a-lifetime situation" Monday, the closest anyone has come to an explanation.

Trier has watched every game from the bench, and was given a red shirt that read "Free Zo" during the pregame shoot-around before a 91-75 victory over Arizona State in Tucson last Thursday. He did not put it on.

Markkanen had a career-high 30 points on 12-of-18-shooting and made 4-of-7 3-pointers against Arizona State. He also had eight rebounds, five offensive, did not commit a turnover in 30 minutes. Markkanen has 52 points, 14 rebounds and one turnover in his last 52 minutes

"Markkanen is a future NBA player, so there is not much you can do about his size," Arizona State guard Tra Holder said.

Mock drafts project Markkanen to go in the top half of the NBA draft in 2017, but he has not addressed his plans.

            "Lauri was spectacular," Miller said.

Arizona's other 7-footer, center Dusan Ristic, had 16 points against Arizona State and has 16, 18, 17, 16 and 16 points in Pac-12 play.

Guard Kadeem Allen and freshmen Rawle Alkins and Kobi Simmons round out the starting five as point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright works to get back to 100 percent after an ankle sprain in December. Allen had 18 points, four rebounds, eight assists and four steals against Arizona State. Arizona had 25 assists on 34 baskets.

"Kadeem Allen is our team's heart and soul," Miller said.

Southern Cal, which fell out of the AP poll for the first time in three weeks, will counter Arizona's size with an athletic big man of its own, 6-11 sophomore Chimezie Metu.

Metu had a career-high 24 points in a 71-68 victory at Colorado on Sunday, giving the Trojans a road split to the Pac-12 mountain schools after an 86-64 loss at Utah. The Trojans have lost three of five after opening the season 13-0 with victories over Texas A&M and BYU.

"It would be nice if we could make a few shots and make it easier on ourselves," USC coach Andy Enfield said. "Somehow we have three conference wins with not shooting the ball great."

Metu made 11-of-14 field goal attempts showed range, hitting several jumpers from the foul line area. He is averaging 14.1 points and guard Jordan McLaughlin is averaging 13.9. Guard Elijah Stewart, who had 27 points in the Trojans' four-overtime victory over Arizona last year, is averaging 13.0.

Arizona's losses are to No. 4 Gonzaga (17-0) by five points and No. 13 Butler (15-3) by four.

USC has won eight games in which it was behind by nine or more points. It trailed Colorado by 11 before rallying Sunday.

            • Preview: Tigers (11-6) at Cardinals (15-3)
              Date: January 19, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

LOUISVILLE -- No. 12 Louisville won't have starting point guard Quentin Snider on Thursday when it hosts Clemson at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville.

Snider, who strained a hip flexor in the second half of Saturday's 78-69 win over Duke, likely will miss the next two to three weeks of games, according to coach Rick Pitino. Louisville's game notes list freshman Ryan McMahon as the starter at point in place of Snider.

"We've all been working at point," sophomore starting guard Donovan Mitchell said. "I brought the ball up, Ryan brought the ball up, Tony (Hicks) brought the ball up -- even Matz (7-footer Matz Stockman) is trying it."

The Cardinals (15-3, 3-2) likely will use a combination of McMahon, senior transfer Hicks and senior walk-on David Levitch at the point guard spot.

Clemson coach Brad Brownell hasn't spent much time worrying about Louisville's lineup change. The Tigers (11-6, 1-4) are hungry for an ACC win after losing its last four games versus North Carolina, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and Virginia.

"I haven't thought a lot about Louisville. I've been thinking about our team," Brownell said. "To be honest with you, it's hard sometimes to get them to compete as hard as I need them to compete, to follow the details of the defense like they need to. We haven't done a good enough job of coaching them that way to improve some of that. It's been a battle with our team."

Clemson has been close in several league losses. The Tigers took No. 14 North Carolina to overtime before falling 89-86. The Notre Dame contest was a one possession game in the final two minutes. The Tigers lost to No. 19 Virginia 77-73.

"Louisville is one of the best teams in the country," Brownell said. "They play as hard as anybody you'll play. You have to have an unbelievable will, unbelievable level of effort to go in there and match those guys in their environment, the way they play. Your competitive spirit has got to be really high. We've got to get ourselves right."

And the Cardinals know that Clemson is formidable. Louisville lost 66-62 last year at Clemson and the 2015 game was within a possession late in the second half before the Cardinals pulled away 58-52.

"They beat us last year," Pitino said. "They're capable of beating anybody in our conference, but that's true of just about anyone."

"We know how good they are," guard Deng Adel said.

Clemson grad forward Jaron Blossomgame is one of the top players in the league. He has four-straight 20-point performances and is averaging 18.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. He'll be guarded by Adel on the wing.

Without Snider, the Cardinals' defense could have to shift as well. Louisville has had two practices without him so far. Pitino said Tuesday that he wasn't quite sure which lineup would work best.

The Cardinals' coach did compliment Snider's toughness, saying he will be back 3-5 days faster than a normal player, but that he needs to rest his hip to make sure he is healthy before playing again.

"Q is such a tough guy," Pitino said. "We have some guys who take a small hit and it looks like they got hit by Muhammad Ali, but Q got back in there and finished the game Saturday."

Clemson graduate year G Avry Holmes has made a 3-pointer in 13 straight games.

Louisville is No. 1 in the ACC in field goal percentage defense at 29 percent.

The Cardinals are last in the ACC at 3-point shooting at 34.2 percent.

Louisville is fourth in the nation in blocked shots per game at 6.6.

              • Preview: Bulldogs (17-0) at Broncos (10-9)
                Date: January 19, 2017 11:00 PM EDT

Santa Clara's road sweep of San Diego and Pepperdine last week put the host Broncos a half-game away from No. 4 Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference standings if they can pull off the upset Thursday.

Only four teams have winning conference records and coach Herb Sendek's Broncos are one of them at 4-2 with an overall record of 10-9. Gonzaga tops the conference standings at 5-0 and the Bulldogs are 17-0 overall, the only team left in the nation with an unbeaten record.

St. Mary's is second behind Gonzaga at 5-1 after losing 79-56 in Spokane, Wash., last Saturday and BYU and Santa Clara are next at 4-2.

The Broncos achieved the road sweep last week despite only one victory away from home in seven previous games.

"It's good to get out of here with a win," Sendek said of the 75-61 win over Pepperdine on Saturday behind Jared Brownridge's 30 points. "I told our guys we did a lot of good things that we can continue to build on."

The Broncos showed the kind of offensive firepower against the Waves that they will need to keep up with Gonzaga, which ranks first in the WCC and 16th nationally in scoring offense at 85.6 points a game.

Santa Clara scored 50 points in the second half against Pepperdine on 60 percent shooting from the field, including an 8-of-13 mark from 3-point range. Brownridge scored 30 or more points for the 11th time in his career to extend his own school record.

"We showed how we are capable of playing by showing that energy to get things done," said Brownridge, who averages 17.9 points to lead the Broncos.

Guards K.J. Feagin and Matt Hauser combine for 25.1 points and 10.3 assists per game. Forward Nate Kratch averages 10.3 points and a team-leading 6.7 rebounds per game.

Kratch, who is 6-foot-8 and 227 pounds, and forward Jarvis Pugh (6-6, 210) have the most presence in the paint combining for 19.2 points and 9.2 rebounds a game.

Santa Clara literally will have a tall order to compete against 7-1, 300-pound Przemek Karnowski and 7-0 reserve forward Zach Collins in addition to 6-9 forward Johnathan Williams and 6-10 reserve center Killian Tillie.

Karnowski leads the WCC shooting 68.2 percent from the field in conference games and Williams is shooting 65.5 percent. Collins is shooting 64.5 percent overall, which tops the conference. Tillie adds another body to absorb fouls and attack the boards.

The victory over St. Mary's, in which Gonzaga shot 64.7 percent of the floor, served notice how fluid and effective coach Mark Few's offense is executing.

"With our offense, coach (Few) stresses getting multiple ball screens," said point guard Nigel Williams-Goss, who leads the team in scoring (15.2 points a game) and assists (4.8) and is shooting a career-high 41 percent beyond the 3-point arc.

"When you have (guard) Josh (Perkins) on one side and me on the other, both ball screens are equally effective and it really puts the defense in a tough position."

                • Preview: Tigers (8-11) at Gaels (15-2)
                  Date: January 19, 2017 11:00 PM EDT

After suffering its worst loss in nearly three years, No. 23 Saint Mary's will try to bounce back when the Gaels host Pacific in a West Coast Conference game on Thursday evening.

Saint Mary's (15-2, 5-1 WCC) has beaten Pacific (8-11, 2-4) seven times in a row, but in their most recent meeting last season, the Tigers held a seven-point lead with four minutes left before dropping a 68-65 decision to the Gaels in Stockton, Calif.

Saint Mary's would rather not be pressed to the limit this time. The Gaels have been ranked in the Top 25 every week this season. But after reaching their highest ranking in school history at No. 12 in early December, the Gaels find themselves with their lowest mark of the season following Saturday's 79-56 loss at Gonzaga on Saturday.

The game was not as lopsided as the score suggests, as Saint Mary's trailed by just six points with 8:35 left before Gonzaga poured it on down the stretch for a 23-point victory. It was the Gaels' largest margin of defeat since a 75-47 loss to Gonzaga on March 1, 2014.

"Ten minutes to go, it was a good game and then we took bad shots, turned it over and didn't guard well," Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett said. "I'm really disappointed in how we defended them today.

"I think we were bad defensively in the second half. Last 10 minutes of the game, we weren't good offensively."

Saint Mary's center Jock Landale, who leads the team in scoring at 17.3 points per game and rebounding at 9.5, was limited to 19 minutes and 10 points because of foul trouble against Gonzaga.

It was the second straight game Landale failed to score more than 10 points, although the Gaels did not need much from him in their 74-33 victory at Portland last Thursday.

"Probably the best game we've played for 40 minutes," Bennett said. "It is hard to do that, to keep it rolling like that. I think we did a great job defensively."

The Gaels sprinted out to a 29-6 lead against the Pilots and dominated that game.

Meanwhile slow starts have been the problem for Pacific.

In their last three games, the Tigers got behind 8-1 to BYU, 11-1 to Pepperdine and 17-4 to San Francisco, which beat the Tigers 72-51 in their most recent game on Saturday.

"I wish I had the answer for those slow starts," first-year Pacific coach Damon Stoudamire said. "In the first half (against USF), no organization."

Senior T.J. Wallace, who leads Pacific in scoring (13.4 points per game) and assists (3.6), has seen enough of the Gaels to know what to expect.

"They're very smart defensively and offensively," he said. "They have a lot of high-IQ basketball players there. They are well coached and they execute their game plan to a T, and that's who they are."

Saint Mary's is second in the nation in scoring defense, yielding just 57.9 points per game.

The Tigers will need to get more out of Wallace and Ray Bowles, who averages 13.1 points, than they did against San Francisco. No Pacific player scored in double figures in that game, with Bowles and Wallace scoring nine points apiece.

"We've got to figure some things out," Stoudamire said. "I'm more concerned about Pacific than Saint Mary's."

Beating Saint Mary's on the Gaels' 3,500-seat home court will be a challenge. The Gaels are 9-1 at home this season while the Tigers are 1-7 away from home.

                  • Preview: Sun Devils (9-9) at Bruins (18-1)
                    Date: January 19, 2017 11:00 PM EDT

A weekend showdown with No. 14 Arizona looms large on UCLA's upcoming schedule, but the third-ranked Bruins need to remain focused on the task at hand when they entertain Arizona State in a Pac-12 Conference game Thursday at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

UCLA (18-1, 5-1 Pac-12) has won five in a row since sustaining an 89-87 loss to No. 11 Oregon. The Bruins are enjoying their best start since winning 18 of their first 19 games to start the 2006-07 season.

Arizona State (9-9, 2-3) has lost two in a row and three of its last four. The Sun Devils have dropped five of their last six and 18 of their last 23 against UCLA.

The Bruins swept their Rocky Mountain road trip last week, beating Colorado 104-89 and Utah 83-82. Lonzo Ball had 17 points and eight assists in the win over Colorado. TJ Leaf recorded his ninth double-double of the season, posting 12 points and 10 rebounds.

"I'm just proud of our guys' effort," UCLA coach Steve Alford said. "We didn't shoot the ball particularly well, but we found a way to win. I just can't say enough about this team. We are almost at 20 games and this team continues to do things that breed winning."

Bryce Alford was named Pac-12 Player of the Week after averaging 26 points and shooting 57.1 percent from 3-point range in the wins over Colorado and Utah. Alford erupted for a career-high 37 points and tied a school record with nine 3-pointers in the victory over Colorado, the highest-scoring game by a Bruin since Dijon Thompson posted 39 points against Arizona State on Feb. 10, 2005.

"It's just one of those things that you can get going," he said. "You make a couple (and) then you get to the line a couple of times. I made all my free throws finally tonight. Anytime I can get to the free-throw line and see the ball go in, and I always say when you see the first couple go in, it always helps."

Arizona State is coming off a 91-75 loss to rival Arizona. Obinna Oleka had a career-high 22 points and nine rebounds for the Sun Devils.

Tra Holder scored 20 points, Torian Graham added 18 and Shannon Evans II tied his career high with eight assists, but the Sun Devils couldn't overcome a slow start. The Wildcats shot 57 percent from the field and amassed a 38-22 rebounding advantage.

The Sun Devils trailed 45-25 at the break. They battled back to get within 12 in the second half, but they were unable to cut the deficit to single digits.

"No matter where you are playing on the road, you want to get your feet under you," Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley told the Arizona Republic. "I tried to flip it in the huddle, telling my guys you have to fight the whole game and we are going to climb back in it. And we did, but we never got to a margin where we could put significant pressure on Arizona."

LOS ANGELES (AP) Isaac Hamilton scored 33 points, hitting a career-high nine 3-pointers, and No. 3 UCLA routed Arizona State 102-80 on Thursday night to improve to 11-0 at home.

The Bruins (19-1, 6-1 Pac-12) made 16 3-pointers and shot 60 percent from the field.

They led by 25 points in the first half and were up by 16 early in the second before the Sun Devils (9-10, 2-4) got within single digits in the matchup of the league's top two scoring and 3-point shooting teams.

Torian Graham scored 26 points and Tra Holder tied his career-high with 22 for Arizona State, which has lost seven straight road games to UCLA. The Sun Devils hit 11 3-pointers, including six by Graham.

                          No. 4 GONZAGA 88, SANTA CLARA 57

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Przemek Karnowski scored 19 points on just seven shots from the field and Gonzaga remained the only undefeated team in Division I.

Karnowski made six shots against the undersized Broncos and added seven more points from the line to help the Bulldogs (18-0, 6-0 West Coast Conference) extend the best start in school history with another lopsided win.

Zach Collins had 16 points and Nigel Williams-Goss added 11 points and 10 rebounds in Gonzaga's 11th straight double-digit win.

Jared Brownridge scored 23 points to lead the Broncos (10-10, 4-3) but got little help from his teammates as Santa Clara dropped its 13th straight to Gonzaga and 37th in the past 39 meetings.

                          No. 11 OREGON 86, CALIFORNIA 63

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Jordan Bell scored a career-high 26 points, Casey Benson had 15 on five 3-pointers and Oregon rolled.

The Ducks (17-2, 6-0 Pac-12) matched a 104-year-old school record with their 15th consecutive win, but they lost preseason All-America Dillon Brooks to a lower leg injury late in the first half.

Brooks, who had offseason surgery on his left foot, limped off the court as Oregon was building a 44-30 halftime lead. Oregon officials tweeted that Brooks had injured his lower left leg after he did not appear with his teammates for the second half.

Jabari Bird had 21 points to lead the Golden Bears (13-6, 4-3), who had won three straight and eight of their last 10 meetings with the Ducks.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Deng Adel scored 18 points to match a career high and Donovan Mitchell scored 18 in the first half as Louisville closed on a 10-0 run.

Playing their first game without injured point guard Quentin Snider (strained hip), the Cardinals (16-3, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) initially struggled to find a rhythm with numerous combinations. Mitchell scored their first six points to settle them down before adding eight during the pivotal spurt with consecutive 3-pointers, the last of which beat the buzzer and earned a 41-31 halftime lead.

Marcquise Reed had 13 points and Donte Grantham added 11 for the Tigers (11-7, 1-5), who lost their fifth straight.

                          No. 14 ARIZONA 73, SOUTHERN CAL 66

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Lauri Markkanen scored 23 points, including a rainbow 3-pointer with 33 seconds left, and Arizona held on late.

The Wildcats (17-2, 6-0 Pac-12) won their 12th consecutive game but had to hold on to the end as USC rallied from a 23-point deficit over the final 15 minutes.

Rawle Alkins added 14 points, Kadeem Allen 11, and Dusan Ristic grabbed 12 rebounds for Arizona, which struggled against a zone defense and shot 40 percent overall but made 10 of 26 3-point attempts.

Elijah Stewart scored 20 points and Jordan McLaughlin added 14 points and eight assists for Southern California (16-4, 3-4).

                          ---

                          No. 23 SAINT MARY'S 62, PACIFIC 50

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) - Calvin Hermanson scored seven of his 17 points as part of a big run in the second half for Saint Mary's.

Jock Landale added 10 points and 10 rebounds while Joe Rahon had nine points and nine assists for Saint Mary's, which has won 10 of 11.

The Gaels (16-2, 6-1 West Coast Conference) let most of a 19-point lead slip away and were up 35-30 early in the second half before Hermanson sparked a 17-4 run. Landale had four points during the run while Tanner Krebbs made two of his three 3-pointers.

T.J. Wallace scored 13 points for Pacific (8-12, 2-5), which has lost eight straight and 10 of 11 in the series between the schools.

                          No. 25 MARYLAND 84, IOWA 76

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Melo Trimble scored 20 points and Maryland rallied after blowing a 15-point lead for its fourth straight victory.

Trimble hit consecutive 3-pointers in the final 3 minutes to key the Terrapins (17-2, 5-1 Big Ten), who have also won three in a row on the road.

Maryland was threatening to blow out the Hawkeyes (11-9, 3-4) before they went on a 10-0 run midway through the second half. The Hawkeyes went ahead 72-69, but an 8-0 spurt fueled by Trimble's 3s gave Maryland a lead it did not relinquish.

Anthony Cowan had 15 points and six assists for the Terrapins, who shot 56.6 percent from the field.

Peter Jok, the Big Ten's leading scorer, had 14 points for Iowa on 4-of-12 shooting.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Thursday…..

                            13) Maryland 84, Iowa 76— NFL ref Gene Steratore gets around; he worked the Ohio State-Nebraska basketball game Wednesday, then worked this game.

Seven of the ten starters in this game are freshmen.

                            12) Memphis 70, Houston 67 OT— Best game I saw Thursday, but it was a brickfest; Tigers won despite going 9-21 on the foul line. Teams combined to go 8-37 on the arc.

                            11) North Dakota State 89, Fort Wayne 83— Who said shooting is a lost art? Bison were 13-22 behind the arc in this game, Fort Wayne was 16-31. Tough night if you go 16-31 on 3’s and lose.

                            10) Oregon 86, Cal 63– Ducks are 4-0 at home in Pac-12, winning last three home games by 23-42-23 points, but lost Dillon Brooks again to another leg injury. Cal’s big man Ivan Rabb was 2-10 in this game; if thats all they’re going to get from him, Golden Bears won’t beat anyone who is any good.

                            9) UCLA 102, Arizona State 80— ASU fired Herb Sendek in 2015 and replaced him with Bobby Hurley; if they think that was an upgrade, they’re imbeciles. Arizona State is a tough job; Hurley will have to be a GREAT recruiter to make the Sun Devils a consistent winner.

As for UCLA, they’re great this year, but Lonzo Ball will be in the NBA next year; then what?

                            8) LaSalle 91, Davidson 83— Much-improved Explorers are 11-5, 5-1 in the A-14- they scored 84 pts/game during their 5-game win streak.

                            7) Random thought: How is Russell Westbrook not starting in the All-Star Game?

                            6) SMU 69, UConn 49— Rough year for the 7-12 Huskies; they trailed 41-17 at halftime.

                            5) Middle Tennessee State 65, FIU 52- Blue Raiders are only unbeaten (6-0) team left in Conference USA.

                            4) North Dakota 83, Weber State 77— Wildcats were last unbeaten team in Big Sky play.

                            3) Wizards 113, Knicks 110— Washington has won seven of its last eight games.

                            2) NC-Wilmington 65, Charleston 59— Seahawks win battle of unbeatens in CAA.

1— ESPN’s people like to put Gonzaga in late night slots; problem is, they’re so good that their games aren’t that much fun to watch. Gonzaga in the WCC is like UNLV was in the Big West during the Tark the Shark heyday 26-28 years ago, totally dominant.
