    • Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

      13) Texans 27, Raiders 14— Oakland was having such a great season until Derek Carr broke his leg, then the whole fell apart very quickly. Raiders were also without their LT, center and backup QB in this game, as Houston advances to play the Patriots in Foxboro next week.

Back in Week 3, Texans were actually favored (-1) in Foxboro, but the Jacoby Brissett-led Patriots smoked Houston 27-0. New England will have a better QB playing next week.

      12) Seahawks 26, Lions 6— Detroit wound up 0-4 in outdoor games this season, scoring 13.3 pts/game in those four; they haven’t won a playoff game since 1991 and before that, 1957.

Overall, Lions have lost nine straight playoff games, an NFL record; their last road playoff win was when Dwight Eisenhower was President. Oy.

Cris Collinsworth was saying how the Lions “have something going now”, referring to their long-term contention, but they also trailed in 4th quarter in 16 of 17 games this season, so they conceivably could’ve been a 1-15 team, instead of a playoff team.

      11) Mississippi State 95, LSU 78— There was wintry weather in the south this weekend, so Miss State took a bus to Baton Rouge, rather than flying. On their way, they saw a car skid on the ice and turn over off the side of the road.

Miss State coaches/trainers got an unconscious woman out of the car and she is reportedly doing well in the hospital. Then the Bulldogs went to LSU and drilled the Tigers, their best win of the year. Hopefully everyone got home safely.

      10) Baylor 61, Oklahoma State 57— Monday morning the Bears will be #1 in the country for the first time; they were lucky in this game— Oklahoma State was only 11-20 on the foul line. Baylor isn’t the best team in the country, but they’re having a surprisingly good season and figure to be a top 4 seed in the NCAA’s, as long as they stay healthy.

      9) Notre Dame 75, Clemson 70— Irish were 15-32 on the arc as the better team lost this game. Clemson was up 7 at the half but lost their second straight nailbiter. There were a total of only 14 foul shots taken in this whole game.

Game was 70-70 with 1:10 left, so if you took 4 points with Clemson, this was a bad beat.

      8) Villanova 93, Marquette 81— Wildcats were a ridiculous 14-23 on the arc; Marquette was 14-31. Wildcats shot 69% inside the arc, scored 1.43 pts/possession, which is really good.

      7) Upset of the Day: Tex-San Antonio 69, Louisiana Tech 68— Roadrunners were a 16-point underdog; they trailed by 10 at the half.

      6) Weber State at Idaho State— Weber State led 13-2 less than 5:00 into the game, but then the game was suspended due to a leaky roof in Idaho State’s gym.

      5) Nevada coach Eric Musselman once coached the Rapid City Thrillers in the old CBA, which basically was the D-League before the D-League existed. One of his players in Rapid City was current Mew Mexico coach Craig Neal, who is 4-5 years older than Musselman.

Now the two are Mountain West coaching rivals.

      4) NC State-North Carolina, Gonzaga-Portland and Wofford-Samford games were postponed and will be played today. There was cruddy weather all over the country Saturday.

      3) Butler 85, Georgetown 76 OT— Bulldogs were little flat with noon tipoff three days after they knocked off Villanova, but they shot 10-20 on the arc and survived a stunningly-soft Georgetown team that is now 0-4 in the Big East.

Bulldogs never got on their flight home; the plane had mechanical issues, second road game in a row Butler had airplane issues trying to get back to Indianapolis.

      2) Georgia 71, Missouri 66— Assistant coaches from both sides got into a little fracas as the end of the first half. Players were milling around, but the coaches were more fired up than they were. I’m guessing there will be fines. Mizzou was 6-36 on the arc in this game; they’re not very good.

1— Kid named Sam Cunliffe transferred from Arizona State after his first semester of college; think he scored 9.5 pts/game for ASU but now will be going to Kansas, where he’ll be eligible at this time next year.

This transferring is getting ridiculous; an AVERAGE of two kids per team transferred after last year and there are 351 Division I teams. Teams are basically getting rebuilt on the fly, like an expansion team in pro sports.

UNLV, Delaware basically had to cob together teams wherever they could find players last April/May after coaching changes and player defections. Hurts the quality of the product, for sure.

      • Sunday's Tip Sheet
        January 7, 2017

This Sunday’s college basketball betting action closes things out with a coast-to-coast double header in both the ACC and the Pac-12. In an 8 p.m. (ET) tip at John Paul Jones Arena, the No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers play host to the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest. Heading out to the West Coast later that night, the California Golden Bears will travel to the Galen Center to tangle with the No. 25 USC Trojans in a 10 p.m. start.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons at No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers (ESPNU, 8 p.m. ET)

        Opening Odds: Virginia -12

        Betting Matchup

Wake Forest is 10-5 this season, but it is off to a straight-up 1-2 start in ACC play while failing to cover in all three games. Following losses to Florida State on the road and to Clemson at home as underdogs; the Demon Deacons hammered Boston College 79-66 this past Tuesday as 15-point home favorites. The total has stayed UNDER in all three games. Sophomore forward John Collins is the team’s leading scorer with 16.4 points per game and he has put up a combined 37 points in his last two games. Wake Forest is averaging 80.9 points per game while allowing an average of 73.2 points at the other end of the court.

Virginia is currently the third-highest nationally ranked team in the ACC behind Duke (No. 8) and Louisville (No. 9). However, early losses to both Florida State at home and Pittsburgh on the road have the 11-3 Cavaliers off to a 1-2 start (SU and ATS) in conference play. These losses did follow an impressive 61-53 upset of the Cardinals as three-point underdogs in their ACC opener. As expected, Virginia’s defense continues to carry this team and heading into Sunday’s matchup it is ranked first in the nation in points allowed (51.4). The Cavaliers are well down the list in scoring with an average of 68.8 PPG.

        Betting Trends

-- The Demon Deacons are 19-7-2 ATS in their last 28 Sunday games, but they fall to 4-13 ATS in their last 17 games following a SU win. The total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five games on the road.

-- The Cavaliers have gone 11-4-1 ATS in their last 16 home games and they are 17-8-1 ATS in their last 26 games against a team with a SU winning record. The total has stayed UNDER in 13 of their last 17 conference games.

-- Head-to-head in this ACC tilt, the home team has covered in five of the last seven meetings and the total has gone OVER in seven of the last 10 games played at Virginia.

California Golden Bears at No. 25 USC Trojans (ESPNU, 10 p.m. ET)

        Opening Odds: USC -3

        Betting Matchup

The 10-5 Golden Bears have lost three of their last four games SU including setbacks to Arizona at home and UCLA on the road in Pac-12 play. They did manage to cover against the Bruins on Thursday night in an 81-71 loss as 10 ½-point road underdogs. The total stayed UNDER the closing 156 ½-point line in that game after going OVER in four of their previous five contests. California has a trio of players averaging at least 14 points a game led by sophomore forward Ivan Rabb (15.3 PPG). He has exceeded that average in four of his last five games, but senior guard Grant Mullins led the way in that loss to UCLA with 19 points.

USC comes into this Pac-12 tilt with just one SU loss on the year against 15 wins, but it has failed to cover in six of its last seven outings. The Trojans cruised past Stanford 72-56 this past Thursday and they did cover as nine-point home favorites. The total stayed UNDER 143 ½-points in that win and it has stayed UNDER in four of their last six games. Junior guard Jordan McLaughlin led all scorers in Thursday’s win with 15 points while going 6-for-11 from the floor. Another junior guard, Elijah Stewart is the Trojans’ leading scorer on the year with 14.3 PPG, but he has failed to post more than 10 points in each of his last four starts.

        Betting Trends

-- The Golden Bears are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games following a SU loss and they have gone 3-9-1 ATS in their last 13 games against a team with a SU winning record. The total has stayed UNDER in eight of their last 10 games on the road.

-- The Trojans have failed to cover in four of their last five home games and they are 0-6 ATS in their last six games following a SU win. The total has gone OVER in seven of their last nine games played at home.

-- The underdog in this Pac-12 clash has gone 5-1-1 ATS in the last seven meetings and the total has gone OVER in seven of the last 10 games played at Southern Cal.

        • Preview: Badgers (13-2) at Boilermakers (13-3)
          Date: January 08, 2017 4:30 PM EDT

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- No. 13 Wisconsin has an opportunity to achieve a pair of unique milestones on Sunday afternoon when it travels to Mackey Arena to play No. 20 Purdue.

No Wisconsin team has won at Indiana and at Purdue during the same season since 1972. The Badgers (13-2, 2-0 Big Ten) defeated No. 25 Indiana 75-68 on Tuesday night in Bloomington's Assembly Hall and will go for a rare Hoosier State sweep against the Boilermakers (13-3, 2-1), who beat Wisconsin twice during the 2015-2016 season, including a 91-80 victory in March at West Lafayette.

A Wisconsin victory Sunday would mark the first time since Illinois in 1956 that a Big Ten opponent won at Indiana and at Purdue in consecutive games on its schedule.

This is the only meeting during the regular season between the Badgers and the Boilermakers, and a victory by the Badgers would put Wisconsin ahead of Purdue by two games in the Big Ten loss column and give coach Greg Gard's team the advantage in any potential tiebreaker with Purdue.

To create some space between itself and Purdue, Wisconsin will have to contend with Boilermakers power forward Caleb Swanigan, who is averaging 18.3 points and 12.9 rebounds and scored 27 in the 11-point victory against the Badgers in March.

Swanigan's free throw with 5.3 seconds remaining Thursday night gave Purdue a huge 76-75 victory at Ohio State, where Purdue was 1-13 in Value City Arena from the time the venue opened for the 1998-99 season.

Swanigan is working on a streak of seven consecutive double-doubles.

"His motor is high," Wisconsin forward Vitto Brown said of Swanigan. "He is deceptively quick with how big he is, and he's always moving, always trying to find the ball, whether that's rebounding, blocking shots or posting up. You definitely have to be on high alert the whole time with him."

The Wisconsin coaching staff is focused on Purdue's primary threat.

"He's got all the talent," Wisconsin assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft said. "It was just a matter of time before the numbers really started piling up, and they are."

Swanigan is eager to pull even with Wisconsin in the Big Ten loss column after the Boilermakers were upset 91-82 in overtime by Minnesota on Jan. 1 in Mackey Arena. Beating Ohio State in Columbus was crucial.

"I don't think the Ohio State game really boosts our confidence, but it helps sustain it," Swanigan said. "We're supposed to beat teams like Minnesota, and we felt like we were supposed to beat Ohio State, too.

"Now going into Wisconsin, we feel like we are supposed to win that game, too, and keep this thing rolling."

Purdue forward Vince Edwards, who is averaging 12.4 points and 5.5 rebounds, hopes the victory at Ohio State is the beginning of a run of success.

"Ohio State showed that we are capable of winning big games while being mature about it," Edwards said.

Now, according to guard Dakota Mathias, the Boilermakers have positioned themselves to challenge for a Big Ten title.

"Ohio State was a good win, but we've got to get going in continuing to study Wisconsin," Mathias said. "They are going to come into a great atmosphere, and we are excited for that."

Coach Matt Painter is excited to play the nation's No. 13 team. Purdue's three losses -- to No. 1 Villanova, No. 6 Louisville and Minnesota -- are to teams with a collective 40-6 record.

"Beating Ohio State was beating an NCAA-caliber team, a team that has a lot of ability," Painter said. "Getting a true road win builds your confidence, especially a game like Thursday's that could have gone either way."

Purdue leads this series 107-69, including 38-4 in Mackey Arena, which opened for the 1967-68 season.

          • Preview: Demon Deacons (10-5) at Cavaliers (11-3)
            Date: January 08, 2017 8:00 PM EDT

Over the first week of the ACC schedule, not much is making sense when it comes to the standings.

Louisville sits in last place in the conference and is without a victory, while Virginia has lost two of its three conference games.

Wake Forest dropped its first two conference games before knocking off Boston College and enters its matchup on Sunday night with No. 11 Virginia at John Paul Jones Area in Charlottesville, Va., holding identical conference records.

            Who would have thought it?

The Demon Deacons have lost five games this season, but are without a bad defeat and have played teams like Florida State, Xavier and Northwestern tough in close loses.

"That's our league," Wake Forest head coach Danny Manning said of the early conference standings. "There are teams winning games that most people probably didn't give them a lot of percentage points to win. For us, we have to use this as momentum."

Virginia will be the fourth ranked opponent that Wake Forest has played this season, with all of those games coming away from Winston-Salem.

The Cavaliers have dropped two straight games to Florida State and Pittsburgh and have not looked good in both loses.

Pittsburgh scored 88 points against coach Tony Bennett's defense, which was the most against a Virginia team in almost four years.

The 3-point shot has been the Cavaliers' weakness against the Seminoles and the Panthers as each team shot the lights out from long range, a rarity against a Virginia defense.

"Defense isn't something we can rest on," Bennett said of Virginia's recent play. "We've played good defense. There were some big holes (against Pittsburgh) that we can't afford against a team of this caliber."

Wake Forest enters Sunday night's game shooting just under 40 percent from beyond the arc for the season, and players like Keyshawn Woods and Austin Arians could provide a problem outside for the Cavaliers.

The Demon Deacons have four players averaging in double figures this season, led by sophomore forward John Collins, who is averaging 16 points and nine rebounds per game.

In the teams' only matchup last season, Wake Forest blew a seven-point lead in the final 30 seconds and guard Darius Thompson banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to allow Virginia to escape Winston-Salem with a 72-71 victory.

Expect Sunday's game to be close as well, as Manning should have Wake Forest ready to play.

The Cavaliers must continue to rely on the solid play of senior point guard London Perrantes, who scored a team-high 16 points in Virginia's loss to Pittsburgh. Perrantes leads the Cavaliers in scoring at just over 10 points per game.

Fellow guard Devon Hall scored a career-high 15 points against Pitt and has found his rhythm at the off-guard position this season. The remainder of Virginia's season could rest in the hands of those two players.

            • Preview: Cardinal (8-7) at Bruins (15-1)
              Date: January 08, 2017 8:00 PM EDT

The last thing downtrodden Stanford needs is to be shorthanded against a UCLA team that is bent on rectifying itself after almost letting a big lead against California slip away Thursday.

That's where Stanford finds itself when it plays the fourth-ranked Bruins on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

The Cardinal (8-7 overall) has lost its first three games in the Pac-12 and are potentially without leading scorer and rebounder Reid Travis, who is out indefinitely after suffering a shoulder injury in practice last week. Travis averages 17.5 points and 9.6 rebounds a game. He missed the contest at USC on Thursday in the Cardinal's 72-56 loss.

First-year coach Jerod Haase is trying to keep Stanford in a positive frame of mind despite the Cardinal committing 21 turnovers in the loss to the Trojans.

"We played well with a lot of effort and passion tonight," Haase said. "Our guys cared and put forth a solid effort, but clearly we have a long, long way to go to reach our goals."

After Thursday's escape against Cal, UCLA coach Steve Alford also feels the Bruins (15-1 overall, 2-1 Pac-12) have a long way to go reach their objective of winning the Pac-12 title and advancing deep in the NCAA tournament.

UCLA led by as many as 24 points early in the second half before Cal cut the margin to five with less than one minute remaining. Two free throws each by guards Lonzo Ball and Aaron Holiday sealed the 81-71 win for the Bruins.

"If we can learn valuable lessons by still winning that shows and proves the character of those guys, which we have talked about all along," said Alford, whose team has matched its win total from last season when it finished 15-17.

"They didn't break. They bent a little bit but they didn't break."

Cal outscored UCLA, 47-37, in the second half as the Bruins shot 34.5 percent from the field and committed six of their nine turnovers after halftime.

"Are there issues?" Alford asked. "Yeah, but it's the Pac-12 and a 10-point win. We've got to be real with it too. This was a really good win."

Stanford is in the midst of playing three straight teams ranked in the AP Top 25 poll for the first time since the 2001-02 season. The Cardinal opened the stretch with a 91-52 loss to No. 18 Arizona last week in Palo Alto, Calif. They will try to avoid getting swept against the Bruins after losing against the 25th-ranked Trojans.

If Travis can't play, Haase will look to guard Dorian Pickens and post player Michael Humphrey to lead his team. Pickens averages 13.2 points a game and Humphrey is at 4.5 rebounds a game. Guard Marcus Allen was a standout against USC on Thursday with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.

UCLA senior captain Bryce Alford, coming off a team-best 24 points against Cal, said the Bruins will not take Stanford lightly especially after their struggle against the Golden Bears in the second half Thursday.

"Each game presents you with different things you can learn," Bryce Alford said. "Every Pac-12 game is going to be a grind for 40 minutes regardless of what you do in the first half. We have to continue to play hard."

UCLA's highly touted freshmen Ball and T.J. Leaf are experiencing their first run through the Pac-12.

Leaf is averaging 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in the three conference games and Ball is averaging 17 points, 6.7 assists and 4.7 rebounds.

The Bruins' scoring output in Pac-12 games (81.3 points a game) is off the pace of their season average of 93.1 points.

              • Preview: Golden Bears (10-5) at Trojans (15-1)
                Date: January 08, 2017 10:00 PM EDT

USC coach Andy Enfield will ask his team to take better care of the ball when the 25th-ranked Trojans play host to Cal in a Pac-12 Conference game on Sunday at the Galen Center in Los Angeles.

USC (15-1, 2-1 in the Pac-12) is among the conference leaders in turnover margin and assist-to-turnover ratio, but the Trojans squandered too many possessions in their last two games against Oregon and Stanford.

The Trojans should fare better against Cal (10-5, 1-2), which forces the fewest turnovers in the Pac-12.

USC committed a season-high 17 turnovers in an 84-61 loss to Oregon on Dec. 30. They topped that total on Thursday, committing 18 turnovers in a 72-56 victory over Stanford.

"We were fortunate to win," Enfield said.

USC is winning despite the absence of big man Bennie Boatwright, who missed the last nine games because of a sprained knee.

The Trojans initially said Boatwright was expected to be out six weeks, but that date is approaching and Enfield is saying there is no definitive timetable for Boatwright's return.

Boatwright was averaging 10.8 points and 4.0 rebounds before sustaining a Grade II sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee in a game against San Diego on Nov. 30.

The Trojans have received a big lift from Chimezie Metu, who is averaging 12.9 points and 8.2 rebounds this season after averaging 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds last season as a freshman.

"Chimezie has had a tremendous season so far," Enfield said. "He's developing into a tremendous player."

Metu has recorded four double-doubles this season. He had 14 points and 10 rebounds in the victory over Stanford.

"Being consistent just has to do with being confident," Metu said. "This season, I'm more confident."

Thanks in large part to Metu, the Trojans haven't missed a beat without Boatwright.

"Without Bennie, I have had to be more of a leader and take on more of a scoring role," Metu said. "Being out there without Bennie is different, but we've handled it well."

Cal is coming off an 81-71 loss to UCLA. The Golden Bears have lost three of their last four games, all against ranked opponents. They lost to then-No. 12 Virginia on Dec. 21, then-No. 18 Arizona on Dec. 30 and No. 4 UCLA on Thursday.

Ivan Rabb had 17 points and a career-high 20 rebounds in the loss to UCLA, his third consecutive double-double and his seventh of the season.

Rabb became the first Cal player to grab 20 rebounds in a game since Leon Powe did it against USC on March 9, 2006.

"I've always been a good rebounder," Rabb said after the UCLA game. "I just need to get in better shape. I was not willing to lie down today, and I just didn't see enough fight in my team, so I wanted to lead by example."

Cal coach Cuonzo Martin was encouraged by the play of Don Coleman. The sophomore guard came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting, all in the second half.

"Coleman is a fighter," Martin said. "He's a competitor and a tremendous player."

                              • Top 25 roundup: No. 4 UCLA notches 16th win
                                January 8, 2017

LOS ANGELES -- UCLA surpassed its win total of last season with an 89-75 win over Stanford behind 21 points from guard Lonzo Ball in a Pac-12 game Sunday night at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

The fourth-ranked Bruins are 16-1 overall and 4-0 in the Pac-12. They finished 15-17 a season ago.

Ball made 4 of 5 attempts from 3-point range and finished with eight assists and six rebounds. Guard Bryce Alford, who also made 4 of 5 shots from beyond the arc, added 17 points for the Bruins while forward T.J. Leaf had 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and guard Isaac Hamilton had 15 points.

Stanford (8-8, 0-4) played its second consecutive game without leading scorer and rebounder Travis Reid, a junior forward who suffered a shoulder injury in practice last week. He is out indefinitely.

                                No. 11 Virginia 79, Wake Forest 62

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Guard London Perrantes scored a season-high 24 points as No. 11 Virginia shook off two consecutive loses, knocking off Wake Forest at John Paul Jones Arena.

Virginia (12-3, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) used a 10-0 burst midway through the second half to pull away from a pesky Wake Forest squad that played the Cavaliers tight for 30 minutes. Perrantes' 24 points were the most by any Virginia player this season.

Wake Forest (10-6, 1-3) was held to 40.4 percent shooting and 28.6 percent from 3-point range, 6 of 21. The Demon Deacons put four players in double figures, led by John Collins with 16 points. Guard Bryant Crawford scored 15 points and handed out six assists.

                                No. 20 Purdue 66, No. 13 Wisconsin 55

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Big men Caleb Swanigan and Isaac Haas, along with some clutch shooting from guard Ryan Cline, lifted No. 20 Purdue to an emphatic 6victory against No. 13 Wisconsin, halting the Badgers' nine-game winning streak.

Swanigan had 18 points and 13 rebounds -- his eighth consecutive double-double -- and the 7-foot-2 Haas added 13 points and five rebounds while Cline scored seven of his nine points during a decisive 12-0 second-half run for Purdue (14-3, 3-1 Big Ten).

Ethan Happ had 17 points and Nigel Hayes added 10 for Wisconsin (13-3, 2-1), which was limited to 39 percent shooting (23 of 59), including 2 of 14 from 3-point range.

No. 14 North Carolina 107, North Carolina State 56

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Justin Jackson scored 21 points and Joel Berry pumped in 19 as North Carolina, which built a huge early lead, blew out visiting North Carolina State at the Smith Center.

The Tar Heels overwhelmed their rivals with a strong long-range shooting display and an effective fast break in one of the most thorough whippings in the 231 all-time meetings between the teams. Isaiah Hicks and Tony Bradley added 11 points apiece for North Carolina (14-3, 2-1 ACC), which made 12 of 27 shots from 3-point range.

It was the most points the Tar Heels ever scored against N.C. State (12-4, 1-2) and the fourth time they reached the 100-point mark the series, though the first time in 24 years.
