        • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

          — Bills fired Rex Ryan Tuesday, benched Tyrod Taylor for the season finale. Not sure how the GM kept his job, but somehow he did.

          — I highly recommend the Burger Lounge in the Aria casino. Tremendous bacon burger.

          — Northwestern 87, Penn State 77— Big road win for the Wildcats.

          — Wake Forest 34, Temple 26— It is easier when the other team doesn’t have your plays.

          — Kent State 63, Texas 58— Horrible home hoop loss for the Longhorns.

          — Michigan State 75, Minnesota 74 OT— Gophers couldn’t get good look at end of regulation or end of overtime; a bitter loss for Richard Pitino.

          **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: My top 13 NFL teams……

          13) Broncos— Curious to see who plays QB for the Broncos next season; I’m guessing it is someone who is not currently on their roster.

          12) Texans— Won division title with JJ Watt missing the whole season; not bad.

          11) Redskins— Can you imagine if Green Bay and Detroit tie Sunday night? People in our nation’s capital are not going to be very happy.

          10) Dolphins— Can’t wait to bet under on their 2017 over/under win total.

          9) Seahawks— Need to improve their offensive line this winter/spring.

          8) Packers— It is basically impossible to overpay a guy like Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady, thats how much they mean to a $1B business.

          7) Giants— I see Scott Linehan doing so well as OC in Dallas and Steve Spagniolo’s defense playing well in New Jersey, then I remember how terribly they did as head coach of the Rams. Timing is everything in life.

          6) Steelers— I really liked their all-black uniforms they wore Christmas night.

          5) Raiders— Derek Carr’s injury is just very unfortunate for a team having a great year.

          4) Chiefs— Still unsure what that lineman’s TD pass was all about Sunday night, but they aggravated Denver, now they need help from the Broncos this week to win AFC West title.

          3) Falcons— Falcons/Braves are both getting new stadiums next year; why?

          2) Patriots— Since 2000, the AFC East has had 24 different head coaches; the Patriots have had one, other three teams 23.

          1) Cowboys— Pounded Detroit in a game they didn’t even need. Impressive.

                • Preview: Blue Demons (7-6) at Wildcats (12-0)
                  Date: December 28, 2016 6:30 PM EDT

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The top-ranked Villanova Wildcats are back to work after a much-deserved week off to complete final exams and wipe away any lingering aches and pains.

Awaiting undefeated Villanova (12-0) is DePaul in the Big East opener for both teams Wednesday night at The Pavilion.

The Wildcats have won 18 straight contests, dating to their six-game run through the 2016 NCAA Tournament on their way to the program's second national championship. Villanova will also be in search of its 45th consecutive victory at The Pavilion, its cozy on-campus arena on the Main Line.

"I think we are ready for the Big East season," said Villanova senior Josh Hart, a preseason National Player of the Year candidate. "But we just have to keep getting better as we can."

In the Wildcats' last game Dec. 21, they crushed American, 90-48, with Hart's 20 points and seven rebounds leading the way.

Mikal Bridges and Eric Paschall each scored 15 points for the surging Wildcats.

Bridges has started nine straight games while guard Phil Booth has been out with tendinitis in his left knee. Booth is still day-to-day and questionable against DePaul. But Bridges has continued to improve every single game.

"Well, he is just so versatile," Villanova head coach Jay Wright said of Bridges. "He can guard guards, he can guard forwards. He hits 3s, he drives, he plays the top of our press. He's just a really complete basketball player. He's learning how to be a starter at this level. To be a starter at this level, you have to play every minute and you have to play hard. That's hard to do. Mikal would come off the bench like Eric is this year.

"Now Mikal is giving us 28 to 30 minutes of really hard and smart basketball. I'm really proud of him. He had four assists (against American) and no turnovers. He's just a really good basketball player."

Paschall, a transfer from Fordham, will get his first experience in the rugged Big East and he's ready for the challenge.

"Just playing with these guys makes it a lot easier, just knowing that they have my back and I have theirs," Paschall said. "Playing Villanova basketball for 40 minutes is what I want to do. Adjusting to it isn't the hardest thing. It's just making sure I do all the little things on the court."

DePaul (7-6) most recently fell to Missouri State, 69-58, in the consolation game of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic on Dec. 23.

Billy Garrett Jr. scored 16 points and contributed three rebounds, two assists and two steals while being named to the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic All-Tournament Team. Tre'Darius McCallum scored 11 points and Brandon Cyrus had 10.

Freshman Devin Gage had five points on 2-of-8 shooting though he's been playing better in recent games.

"I've been telling Devin he has to play with more energy and be an attacker," DePaul head coach Dave Leitao told the school's website before the most recent tournament. "I'll take my chances giving him the ball when he's on the attack."

The Blue Demons have dropped two in a row after winning two straight.

DePaul is 1-1 all-time against Villanova.

                  • Preview: Demon Deacons (9-3) at Seminoles (12-1)
                    Date: December 28, 2016 5:00 PM EDT

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The No. 20-ranked Florida State men's basketball team entered the holiday break at 12-1 and off to their best start in 10 years.

But when you're a member of the toughest conference in the nation, non-conference success doesn't mean much.

And Seminoles head coach Leonard Hamilton is the first to admit that heading into his team's ACC opener Wednesday at home against Wake Forest (9-3).

"This is a great conference that's (somehow) gotten better," said Hamilton, whose program is about to play five of its next seven games against Top 25 programs -- all hailing from the ACC. "I don't think we've seen anything like what's getting ready to happen."

                    He isn't joking.

After Wednesday's game at home against a dangerous Demon Deacons team, which has won four of its last five and is coming off a 110-76 rout of LSU on Dec. 22, the schedule gets even scarier, including:

Saturday: at No. 12 Virginia (10-1)

Jan. 7: vs. Virginia Tech (10-1)

                    Jan. 10: vs. No. 5 Duke (12-1)

Jan. 14: at No. 9 North Carolina (11-2)

Jan. 18: vs. No. 24 Notre Dame (10-2)

                    Jan. 21: vs. No. 6 Louisville (11-1)

Yes, five of those seven games over the next three weeks are at home at the Donald L. Tucker Center, where Florida State is 9-0 this season. But, no, that doesn't matter very much.

"We're pleased that we are 12-1 in the pre-conference," Hamilton said. "Now, it's on. Let's get the party started."

The Seminoles, who haven't been ranked this high since 2012, when they won the ACC Championship and finished 10th in the AP Top 25 Poll, had a nice long break to prepare for Wake Forest. Florida State last played Dec. 19 against Samford and came away with a hard-fought 76-68 victory, led by a career-high 19 points from guard Terance Mann, who has emerged as the Seminoles' central leader in just his sophomore season.

"I just stick to my game. I'm just a natural leader," said Mann, who averages 8.8 points and 4.8 rebounds a game. "If I'm out there playing aggressive and showing no negative emotions, then (my teammates) will hop on board and show the same thing."

After that win over Samford, Mann said the nine-day holiday hiatus before opening ACC play against the Demon Deacons would be nice, but with the Seminoles "rolling right now," he wouldn't have minded facing Wake Forest the very next day.

"We wish we could keep playing," Mann said with a smile.

Joining Mann in the leadership conversation early in the season is the Seminoles' unquestioned scoring leader, Dwayne Bacon, who averages 16.9 points and has scored in double figures 22 straight games dating to last season. Bacon had a chance to leave last season and leap to the NBA, but he opted to return and he now finds himself one of the focal points of a talented squad whose only loss thus far came against Temple in the NIT Tip-Off.

Florida State actually led that game against the Owls by 18 points before blowing the lead late. It appears the Seminoles have learned from that loss, having now won eight games in a row heading into the showdown against Wake.

"Defensively, I felt like once we've got into (situations like we did against Temple), we've turned it up a notched," Hamilton said of what his team learned from its lone blemish on the record. "The focus has been better."

The series between Wake Forest and Florida State is tied 24-24, with the Seminoles winning the last meeting 91-71 on Feb. 6, 2016, in North Carolina, as well as the last meeting in Tallahassee in 2015. That one went to double overtime before the Seminoles prevailed 59-57.

Florida State has actually won the last four meetings at the Tucker Center, with the Demon Deacons' last victory in Tallahassee coming in 2007-08.

But Wake Forest looked scary good in its last game, scoring 67 points in the second half alone against LSU -- one shy of the school record for points in a half. Wake Forest also made 16 3-pointers in the victory against the Tigers -- tied for the third-most in school history -- and the Demon Deacons rode the shoulders of a career-high 28 points by junior forward Dinos Mitoglou

"I was very happy, because, as a staff, we saw some growth in our team," Wake Forest coach Danny Manning said of the team's highest-scoring game all season. "We've been in situations like this earlier in the year when we would get decent leads on teams and we weren't able to sustain those leads for whatever reason -- not defending, not rebounding, trying to make home-run, hero plays -- and I thought tonight we made a few of those mistakes, but we didn't make as many as we have in the past.

"For us, defensively, we can do some better things, but we shot the ball so well it covered up a lot of our mistakes."

Wake Forest is led offensively by 6-foot-10 sophomore John Collins, who averages 17.3 points and 10.4 rebounds. It will be an interesting matchup to watch when Florida State counters with its own 6-10 forward, freshman Jonathan Isaac, who is averaging 12.9 points and seven rebounds.

                      Date: December 28, 2016 6:30 PM EDT

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- No. 16 Indiana begins defense of its Big Ten regular-season championship on Wednesday when Nebraska visits Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

The Hoosiers (10-2) have breezed through their non-conference home schedule unblemished with nine victories by an average of 30.8 points and have won 26 in a row at home, the fifth-longest streak in program history and fourth best among active streaks in the country.

The Cornhuskers (6-6) have lost both of their road games, 89-72 at No. 3 Kansas and 60-58 at Clemson. Indiana knocked off No. 3 Kansas 103-99 in overtime in the season opener at Hawaii.

In their most recent action, Indiana tied a season high with 15 3-pointers in a 97-62 home rout of Austin Peay six days ago and Nebraska defeated Southern 81-76 at home on Dec. 20.

Indiana leading scorer James Blackmon Jr., who missed conference play a season ago with a knee injury, is anxious to play Big Ten competition. The junior guard averages 18.5 points and is shooting .457 from 3-point range (37 of 81).

"I'm looking forward to it a lot really, what I've been looking forward to since the beginning of this season," Blackmon said after the Austin Peay win. "It's hard not to look forward to games and not look over one team. But now that it's here, (I) continue to work hard in practice and out of practice and just take care of business when it comes."

The Hoosiers swept the Cornhuskers last season with a pair of double-digit victories.

While the Cornhuskers are 0-3 against ranked opponents this season, the Hoosiers are 3-1, including a 76-67 home victory over No. 3 North Carolina.

Nebraska has also had a humbling home loss to Gardner Webb, which prompted phone-in criticism from callers to coach Tim Miles' radio show. He's 69-73 in five seasons at Nebraska, 352-293 overall in 22 seasons.

"I understand the frustration," Miles said on the show. "At the same time, that doesn't make me believe less in myself or our players or our staff. I think we're very close to doing some outstanding things."

The Cornhuskers were 11th in the 14-team Big Ten with a 6-12 mark last season and finished 16-18 overall, which provided fodder for doubters.

Nebraska is averaging 69.2 points and allowing 67.7 points per game. Tai Webster, a senior guard from New Zealand, is scoring a team-best 17 points per game. Sophomore guard Glynn Watson Jr. is averaging 12.6 points. Sophomore forward Ed Morrow Jr. is averaging 10.4 points and a team-best 8.4 rebounds.

Indiana, 15-3 in the Big Ten and 27-8 overall last season, is again one of the nation's most explosive offenses with an 88.8-point average while allowing opponents 66 points per game.

Aside from Blackmon, Indiana junior guard Robert Johnson averages 13.8 points. Sophomore forward OG Anunoby and sophomore center Thomas Bryant are scoring 12 points per game. Bryant leads the team in rebounding at 7.8 per game.

The Hoosiers are shooting .401 from 3-point range (117 of 292), making an average of 9.75 3-pointers per game. They've also limited opponents to just .270 3-point shooting (70 of 259).

The Cornhuskers' perimeter defense has been an issue at times as opponents have hit 78 of 218 (.358) while Nebraska has made just 65 of 222 3-pointers (.293).

Indiana coach Tom Crean, 2015-16 Big Ten Coach of the Year, has a 158-121 record in nine seasons at the school, 348-217 overall in 18 seasons.

                        Date: December 28, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

CINCINNATI -- The rumor mill had been churning for weeks that suspended Xavier guard Myles Davis might return in time for the start of Big East Conference play. But when the No. 17 Musketeers host Providence in the league opener on Wednesday night at Cintas Center, Davis will not be on the court.

Coach Chris Mack put that speculation to rest on Tuesday, saying Davis "won't be playing tomorrow night."

Davis, the team's third-leading scorer and top assists man last season has yet to practice with the team since being suspended indefinitely following misdemeanor criminal damaging charges involving his ex-girlfriend's property. He entered a plea for a lesser charge of disorderly conduct last month.

Although his legal issues are behind him, Davis' playing status remains in limbo. So far, Xavier has managed to play well without him. It's uncertain how Davis' return might impact the team's development or what role he'll have, at least initially. The Musketeers, sans Davis, have won three straight games and as of Tuesday were fourth in the RPI rankings. Xavier has won 13 straight games at Cintas Center and 22 of the past 23.

Xavier (10-2) is led by junior guard Trevon Bluiett, who averages a team-leading 19 points per game which ranks seventh in the Big East. Over his past six games, he is averaging 21.2 points.

Musketeers point guard Edmond Sumner is coming off his most complete performance of the season on Dec. 20 when he had 14 points and a career-high nine assists with no turnovers in a win over Eastern Washington. Sumner has been dealing with a hand issue and playing with his fingers taped. He did not wear the tape against the Eagles but practiced with it this week, so something to watch on Wednesday.

Providence, meanwhile, had its six-game winning streak halted on Friday with a 79-67 loss at Boston College, a team that already had lost to Nicholls State, Harvard, and Hartford.

"We were pathetic today," Friars coach Ed Cooley told the Providence Journal. "This is probably the worst loss since I've been at Providence College. We were listless, we were lethargic, we were slow. We were horrific."

Providence (10-3) is led by junior forward Rodney Bullock who leads the team with averages of 19.4 points and 6.8 rebounds. The Friars have been outrebounded by their opponents this season, while Xavier leads the Big East and ranks 21st nationally in rebounding margin at plus-8.3. Rashid Gaston leads the Musketeers with 6.8 rebounds per game.

The Musketeers have beaten the Friars in three straight meetings and lead the all-time series 6-3, including a 4-2 advantage since they joined the Big East. Xavier is 3-0 against Providence at Cintas Center.

Mack feels good about where the team stands heading into the Big East schedule.

"We were down a couple guys, or we were at the beginning of the year," Mack said last week. "We're 10-2. We played arguably one of the top 20 schedules in the entire country. That doesn't make our job from Dec. 28 on any easier, but hopefully it prepares us. We've got a long way to go to get better. Our players recognize that."

                        • Preview: Cavaliers (10-1) at Cardinals (11-1)
                          Date: December 28, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

No. 6 Louisville will host No. 12 Virginia Wednesday night at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky., in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.

The Cardinals (11-1) boast the best defensive efficiency rating in the nation, according to Ken Pomeroy's advanced metrics.

Virginia (10-1) leads the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 47.2 points per game, and are second in field goal percentage defense (34 percent).

What do you get when the nation's No. 1 defense plays the No. 2 defense?

"It will be a low scoring game," Louisville coach Rick Pitino said, smiling.

The Cavaliers are No. 2 in Ken Pomeroy's defensive rankings. Virginia is among the slowest-paced teams in the nation.

"It's a polar opposite (from Louisville's 73-70 win over Kentucky)," Pitino said. "We'll try to run, and they'll fast break sometimes as well, but you will find this is going to be a low-scoring game. It is just going to be. Two very good defensive teams and no matter how much we both try to run, it's going to be a low-scoring game."

When Louisville and Virginia meet it is typically a grind. The Cardinals and Cavaliers, locked into a home-and-home series per ACC rivalry pairings when Louisville entered the lead two years ago, have played four times the last two seasons.

Average score? Virginia 60, Louisville 50. The last time either team scored 75 points in the series was an 98-81 Virginia win in 1983.

For all their recent success, the Cardinals haven't had much success against Virginia. The Cavaliers have won three out of four, including 16- and 22-point wins last season. But Louisville's offense may be better this season with more scoring options.

"They look like the players they have have developed from last year," Virginia coach Tony Bennett said Monday. "... They look a little more potent offensively. They're playing faster than they have. With that length and blocking ability, it's very impressive."

The Cardinals' scoring average is up to 78.0 points per game, up from 75 points per game last season and 69.0 points per game in 2014-15. Louisville has four starters averaging between 11.9 and 9.8 points per game: junior guard Quentin Snider at 11.9, sophomore wings Donovan Mitchell at 11.8 and Deng Adel at 10.4 and power forward Jaylen Johnson at 9.8. Louisville's fifth starter, senior center Mangok Mathiang, is averaging 6.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.

"Virginia is a very tough game to prepare for, very difficult, all phases of the game," Pitino said. "You know it's going to be a close game. You know it's going to be difficult to score. You know you have to be as good as they are defensively. Virginia is always difficult to play against."

Only one of Virginia's starters averages more than eight points per game -- senior guard London Perrantes at 10.0 points per game. The Cavaliers have faced just one other team of Louisville's caliber this season, a 66-57 loss to then-No. 19 West Virginia. Virginia is coming off its best win of the season, a 56-52 win at California last Wednesday.

As for Louisville, the Cardinals have passed several strong tests -- a 62-52 win over Wichita State, a 71-64 win over No. 15 Purdue and a 73-70 win over No. 8 Kentucky. The Cardinals' lone loss, a 66-63 loss to No. 4 Baylor in the title game of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, saw Louisville give up a 22-point lead.

The Cavaliers have won eight straight ACC openers. The Cardinals have been in three different leagues in recent years -- the Big East, the American Athletic Conference and the ACC -- and have won seven out of the last eight openers.

Pitino said this year's ACC will be a battle.

"Pass the Pepto Bismol," Pitino said earlier this season when asked about Louisville's schedule.

The Cardinals will face Virginia, then No. 16 Indiana on Saturday before traveling to No. 24 Notre Dame next Wednesday night. Virginia is in a similar boat with ACC road games at Louisville, at Clemson, at Notre Dame, at Virginia Tech and at North Carolina as well as a nonconference showdown at Villanova on Jan. 29.

NOTES: Louisville junior G Quentin Snider was honored as ACC Player of the Week Monday after he led Louisville with 22 points during a 73-70 win over Kentucky last Wednesday. ... Virginia beat Louisville 63-47 in their trip to the KFC Yum! Center last season. ... Tony Bennett is 3-1 vs. Louisville as Virginia's coach. ... Louisville sophomore G Donovan Mitchell leads the ACC in steals at 2.3 per game.

                          • Preview: Hawks (10-2) at Tar Heels (11-2)
                            Date: December 28, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- King Rice is bringing a better Monmouth team to the Smith Center this time.

The former North Carolina point guard returns to his alma mater as coach of the opponent when Monmouth meets the ninth-ranked Tar Heels on Wednesday night.

Monmouth (10-2) is off to the best 12-game start in program history and has won nine games in a row for the first time.

North Carolina (11-2) might be a refreshed group after a week off.

"I think this break gives us time to get some rest," guard Joel Berry said. "It gives us time to rest and get ready for the ACC."

After this game, the teams delve into play in their respective conferences.

North Carolina players have been encouraged by their play. Even the 103-100 loss to Kentucky came with positive elements and it was followed by a thrashing of Northern Iowa last week.

"What better time to play great (than) right now," forward Kennedy Meeks said.

Meeks is evolving into a more complete player for the Tar Heels, and that's a sign of the team's progress. He is shooting 53.6 percent from the field and averaging 9.0 rebounds per game.

"I think now he's helping us on the defensive end and scoring in the low post," coach Roy Williams said.

Meeks, a senior, is within nine rebounds of becoming the 20th Tar Heel to reach the 800-rebound career total.

Rice, who played for the Tar Heels from 1987 to 1991, was recruited by Williams, then became a North Carolina assistant coach under Dean Smith.

Rice was a first-year Monmouth coach for the only other meeting between the teams. North Carolina won that Jan. 1, 2012, game by 102-65.

Monmouth senior guard Je'lon Hornbeak has received the past two Player of the Week distinctions in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Last week, he poured in a career-high 25 points and notched his first double-double in a victory against Ivy League favorite Princeton. The previous week, he bagged six three-pointers in a win at Memphis.

"It has been a year of getting more comfortable with this team, and getting more relaxed with these guys and now it's clicking," said Hornbeck, who transferred from Oklahoma following the 2013-14 season.

The Hawks have tinkered with their lineup, with Josh James rejoining the starting five for the Princeton game after two games coming off the bench. He switched with Pierre Sarr, who went back to a reserve role.

The 96-90 home victory against Princeton was played at Rice's preferred level.

"That was as good of a college basketball game that I've been in in a long time," he said. "The back and forth was incredible."

The Hawks have some scoring prowess, but Rice said that's often predicated on what happens at the other end of the court.

"Sooner or later the ball is going to go in and we're going to (gain momentum) by getting stops," Rice said.

Monmouth's losses this season came more than a month ago in consecutive road games against South Carolina (in overtime) and Syracuse.

                            • Preview: Peacocks (5-6) at Fighting Irish (10-2)
                              Date: December 28, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Given five days to get away and be with family for Christmas felt in some ways like five weeks for No. 24 Notre Dame.

Given the way the Fighting Irish (10-2) ended their early stretch of games, Wednesday's non-conference finale against Saint Peter's (5-6) couldn't come soon enough.

With Atlantic Coast Conference play closing quickly - the league opener is New Year's Eve at Pittsburgh - Notre Dame needs to remain on the court. The Irish need to run and pass and move it and score and again feel good about themselves the way they did while winning their first nine, most in lopsided fashion.

Campus is closed until the third week of January. The Irish have moved out of their dorms and into a nearby hotel. It's all basketball for a team that registered a 3.1 grade-point average for the fall semester, highest since the spring of 2009.

"This is a fun time for us," junior guard Matt Farrell said. "It's just us here."

Notre Dame labored through its most challenging two weeks - in the classroom and on the court - just before the holiday break. Coupled with the usual assortment of papers and projects that were due leading into finals, the Irish had their toughest non-league tests - against No. 1 Villanova and No. 15 Purdue.

Notre Dame failed both. That still stings.

"We want to bounce back," Farrell said. "We've got guys that are focused to do what we've got to do. We're excited to be back."

It would be easy to look past the Peacocks and focus on the Panthers, but the Irish know better.

Knowing they have to be a whole lot better than they were before leaving for Christmas break prohibits anyone from thinking ACC. There's still a lot to fix today before worrying about Wednesday.

Back on Dec. 19, Notre Dame committed a season-high 14 turnovers in a 15-point victory over Colgate. The game was sluggish in spots, sloppy in others. Getting out of town and home the next day was good for all, but the get-away game left them feeling they have plenty to prove before league play commences.

Wednesday gives the Irish a chance to be better. For them, league play really starts with Saint Peter's. Who is Notre Dame going to be over the next three months? The Irish can start to show it.

Notre Dame enters the final week of December ranked in the top 10 of six categories nationally, eight in the ACC. The Irish believe they're good; now it's time to show it for the next two-plus months.

"Our attention to detail has to be at an all-time high this week," said sophomore guard Rex Pflueger, who's played 210 minutes over 11 games without a turnover. "We had some great mojo when we were winning our first nine games. We had great mojo in the first two halves of the games we lost.

"We need to get back to that."

Sunday was a good start. Despite everyone traveling back to campus on Christmas night, the Irish held as solid a practice session as they've had in weeks. Players seemed refreshed by the break, and ready to focus on the grind that awaits.

                              It starts Wednesday.

"We've got to get after it again," freshman guard T.J. Gibbs said. "We've got to get back into character, get back to us."

                              • Preview: Pirates (10-2) at Bluejays (12-0)
                                Date: December 28, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

In three seasons as members of the Big East Conference, Creighton players and coaches have learned not to overlook any opponent.

Even when the 12-0 Bluejays open their fourth season of Big East play Wednesday against Seton Hall as the nation's 10th-ranked team they know that's not an option. Not even with No. 1-ranked and defending national champion Villanova next up on Creighton's schedule three days later.

Creighton's sole focus since winning at Arizona State Dec. 20 has been on preparing for the 7 p.m. CST game with the Pirates at CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb.

Though the Pirates (10-2) aren't ranked, they are the defending Big East tournament champions and have four of the five starters back from that squad. Among that crew is 6-foot-10 junior forward Angel Delgado, who is averaging 14.7 points and 11.8 rebounds per game.

"They're going to get it to Delgado and we're going to have to deal with it once it goes there," Creighton coach Greg McDermott said. "We'll mix up our looks on him and try to make him as uncomfortable as possible."

McDermott said there has been no peeking ahead to the Top 10 showdown with Villanova on New Year's Eve, especially taking into account Creighton's recent games against Seton Hall. The Bluejays have lost their last two to the Pirates, including an 81-73 setback in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Big East tournament.

For Saturday's game to have the meaning so many want to assign it, a loss Wednesday to the Pirates would take some of the shine off the Villanova game.

"Our defense is going to be tested, our physicality is certainly going to be tested," McDermott said. "If you're not ready for this game, you don't have a pulse. This is an important game for us."

Seton Hall has won its past two games on Creighton's home court. Only two other Big East teams -- Villanova and Providence -- have won at CenturyLink Center since the Jays joined the conference in 2013.

"To have the Big East tournament champions come in for the first game and the national champions come in for the second game, it's a big week for us, an important week for us," McDermott said. "If you're going to compete for the league title you're going to have to protect your home floor. It's that simple."

Pirates coach Kevin Willard has guided Seton Hall to a 5-1 record in Big East openers. The Pirates also have another winning streak they want to protect Wednesday night -- five consecutive victories over nationally-ranked opponents since Feb. 25.

"They're a really good rebounding team," Creighton guard Maurice Watson said. "They play with toughness, they're aggressive going to the rim. We have to get on them on the dribble and rebound."

As usual the Pirates are relying heavily on their defense, which was especially strong in wins over California, Iowa, South Carolina and Rutgers. Something will have to give Wednesday -- Seton Hall is allowing just 67.9 points per game while Creighton is eighth nationally in scoring at 89.8 per outing.

"Obviously they're terrific defensively, they play with a tremendous amount of toughness," McDermott said. "They've played a good schedule, they've got a good record, this is a legitimate Top 25 team that I think will be in the NCAA tournament."

Cutting down on turnovers will be key for the Bluejays as well after they coughed the ball up 15 times in the win over the Sun Devils.

Even with four players averaging in double figures -- led by 19.1 per game from Kansas State transfer Marcus Foster - the Bluejays must make the most of every possession the next two games if Creighton wants to remain one of the few unbeaten teams when the calendar changes to 2017 on Sunday.

"We're going to make a few mistakes because we want to attack and I want our guys on the attack," McDermott said. "When you do that, you have to live with a few of those. The key is we just can't afford the turnovers that lead to a basket on the other end. Those pick-six turnovers are tough ones to live with."
