Texas State is 4-5 vs D-I teams (schedule #342), 0-4 in true road games, with three of those four losses by 11+ points- they’re 4-3 vs teams ranked outside top 200. Bobcats are #95 team in experience playing pace #315— by far best team they’ve beaten this year is #223 Fla Atlantic. Auburn is 9-2 vs schedule #202; Tigers are #320 experience team whose bench is playing #32 minutes. Auburn won its last three games, is 2-1 vs top 100 teams, beating Oklahoma/Texas Tech, losing to Purdue by 25 on a neutral court. UConn has been decimated by injuries; they’re #250 experience team whose bench plays #255 minutes. Huskies are 1-3 vs top 100 teams, beating Syracuse by a hoop- their top 100 losses are by 8-10-4 points.

Home side won last six Providence-Boston College games; Friars lost last three visits here, by 2-3-9 points. Providence lost by 5 at Ohio State in only true road game this year; they’re 2-2 vs top 100 teams, with wins over Memphis/URI. Rutgers is 11-1 under new coach Pikiell against 2nd-easiest schedule in country- their only loss was by 12 at Miami.

Oakland is playing its third game in four nights after losing to Northeastern/Michigan State earlier in week; Grizzlies are 9-3 but 0-2 vs top 100 teams, losing by 12 to MSU, 4 to Nevada up in Alaskan Shootout. Unusual for them, Oakland has #35 eFG% defense; they play #30 pace. Georgia is 8-3 with all three losses to top 40 teams; Dawgs’ best win was over #120 ULL. Dawgs split pair of true road games with loss at Clemson, win at Georgia Tech.

Houston is 9-2 vs schedule #298; they’re #42 experience team that 3-2 vs teams vs teams ranked #155 or better with only two losses by 19 at LSU, 12 at Arkansas. Southern Mississippi is 20-48 the last 2+ years, losing last six games this year, with five of those six by 11+ points. Eagles have an experience team but none of them can shoot: USM is making 26.6% on the arc, turning ball over 21.5% of time- they used all five starters 30:00+ in loss to San Diego State last night. SF Austin is 4-6 vs schedule #44; they’ve turned ball over 27.1% of time, 2nd-worst %age in country, even while playing a slowish pace.

San Francisco made a ridiculous 16-28 on arc, upset Utah 89-86 as a 9-point underdog yesterday; Dons are 9-2 vs 3rd-easiest schedule in country- they start two frosh, two sophs under 1st-year coach Smith. Last night was USF’s first top 200 game this season. Illinois State won six of its last seven games, crushing Hawai’i by 26 last night. Redbirds have made 39.8% on arc, have #59 eFG% defense on country. USF played nine kids 13:00+ last night.

Utah has to be stunned losing to USF; Utes used three guys 34:00+ last night, their second loss in last three games. Utes are 5-0 vs teams outside top 200, with three of five wins by 18+ points. Hawai’i has 11 new players this year; they’re ineligible for postseason play- Rainbows are 0-4 vs top 100 teams, with all four losses by 11+ points. Hawai’i is turning ball over 22.4% of time, shooting just 27.9% from the arc.

DePaul trailed Missouri State by 13 with 7:29 left, rallied to nip Bears 68-66 at home Nov 23 in Chicago. Bears made 10-24 on arc in tough loss. Blue Demons lost on neutral floor to Wyoming last night and it wasn’t even an upset; DePaul is 7-5 vs schedule #338- they’re 1-4 vs teams in top 200. Could be a rough winter in Big East for them. DePaul played three kids 29:00+, forced 22 turnovers (+8) but still lost. Missouri State was 14-36 on arc in 83-75 loss to USC last night; hard to make lot of 3’s playing second night in row.

USC is 12-0, using four starters 33:00+ in 83-75 win over Missouri State last night; Trojans are 4-0 vs top 150 teams, with all four wins by 8 or less points. Wyoming has #28 eFG% defense in country- they’re #127 experience team.

Richmond is 6-5 vs schedule #247, splitting its two true road games, losing by 5 at Bucknell, winning by 20 at James Madison. Spiders are making only 32.5% on arc and they don’t sub a lot- they’re little disappointing. Oral Roberts beat Little Rock by 15 in last game after losing to unbeaten Creighton by a point before that- that was their first win in 11 D-I games this season. Golden Eagles have #298 eFG% offense, #272 defense, but they’ve played schedule #8.

                • Utah forces 23 turnovers, beats SFA 74-66
                  December 25, 2016

HONOLULU (AP) After playing a couple of late-night games, Utah had an early wake-up call Christmas morning.

                  Not that it needed it.

Utah got off to a hot start and never relinquished it in a 74-66 win over Stephen F. Austin in the fifth-place game of the Diamond Head Classic Sunday.

David Collette scored 17 points on 8-of-8 shooting, JoJo Zamora and Devon Daniels had 16 each and Lorenzo Bonam added 12 for the Utes (9-3), who shot 58.5 percent (24 of 41) from the field.

Utah scored 30 points off of 23 turnovers by the Lumberjacks (5-7).

The game tipped off shortly after 7:30 a.m. local time.

''I've said I've got to be careful what you wish for, because my entire life coaching when we get these late games I've always said `man, I wish we could just play at seven in the morning and get it done,' and then have the rest of the day free,'' Utes coach Larry Krystkowiak said. ''This is one of those examples of where we had to do that.''

Gabe Bealer's 3-pointer from the right corner off an assist from Collette gave Utah its largest lead at 49-35 and capped a 10-2 run with 12:26 left to play.

Stephen F. Austin got as close as 55-51 following a pair of free throws by Chase Winchester with 5:13 remaining.

The Utes made just 2 of 6 from the free-throw line in the first half, but were 18 of 22 in the second. They were 14 of 16 in the final 10 minutes of the game and made their final 10 attempts.

''We've had a couple games where that's been real important to us,'' Krystkowiak said. ''It's real important when you've got the momentum kind of shifting the other direction to make those. That's how teams catch up, when you don't put points on the board.''

Leon Gilmore III had 13 points, Ty Charles 11 and Ivan Canete 10 for the Lumberjacks.

Utah opened the game with a 9-0 run, but went scoreless for a stretch of more than five minutes while Stephen F. Austin used a 14-5 run to get within 20-18.

The Lumberjacks used a 2-3 zone to slow down the Utes.

''We played mostly zone the last 12, 13 minutes of the (first) half and just hoped they missed,'' Stephen F. Austin first-year coach Kyle Keller said. ''Fortunately they did and it got us back in the game. It slowed the tempo down at a decent pace and we were able to stay in the game.''

The Utes took a 32-26 lead into halftime.

It was just the second meeting between the schools and the first since Utah beat Stephen F. Austin 57-50 in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

                  BIG PICTURE

Utah: The Utes committed more turnovers than they had assists for the third consecutive game. They had 18 turnovers to 17 assists Sunday and turned it over a combined 57 times against 45 assists in their three Diamond Head Classic games.

Stephen F. Austin: The Lumberjacks are now 1-11 against current members of the Pac-12, with the lone win coming on Dec. 2, 1988 against Washington State in a neutral-site game in Akron, Ohio.

                  LOST THE BOARDS

Utah was outrebounded for just the second time in a game this season. The Utes grabbed 20 rebounds to 24 for Stephen F. Austin. The only other time the Utes were outrebounded (29 to 25) was in Thursday's 89-86 loss to San Francisco. They entered Sunday's game averaging 43.9 rebounds, which ranks eighth in the NCAA.

                  INJURY BUG

Stephen F. Austin sophomore forward TJ Holyfield was held out as a precautionary measure. Holyfield, the team's second-leading scorer with 12.2 points per game, sustained an undisclosed injury in a practice Saturday.

                  NEXT UP

Utah will open Pac-12 play Sunday, when it hosts Colorado.

Stephen F. Austin will face Houston Baptist in its Southland Conference opener Saturday.

                  December 25, 2016

HONOLULU (AP) Jack Purchase made five 3-pointers and scored 17 points, and Hawaii snapped a four-game losing streak with a 60-46 victory over Southern Mississippi in the seventh-place game of the Diamond Head Classic on Sunday.

Hawaii went on a 10-0 run to stretch its lead to 21 points midway through the second half as Southern Miss went scoreless for five-plus minutes.

Gibson Johnson added 10 points for Hawaii (5-7), which made 10 shots from distance.

Hawaii's 10-2 spurt late in the first half was capped by Purchase's third 3-pointer for a 30-20 lead. He scored 11 points in the half as Hawaii held a 32-22 advantage after making 7 of 15 3s.

Ill. State cruises to 3rd in Diamond Head
                  December 25, 2016

HONOLULU (AP) Paris Lee scored 18 points, Deontae Hawkins added 16 and Illinois State cruised past Tulsa 68-56 on Sunday for third place in the Diamond Head Classic.

Illinois State (8-4) opened the game on a 16-0 run and Tulsa (6-6) didn't get on the board until freshman Joseph Battle hit a 3-pointer at the 13:19 mark. The Golden Hurricane's were just one for their first 11 shots from the field.

Pat Birt made Tulsa's second basket - also a 3 - with 9:39 left and the Golden Hurricane's trailed 23-7. Their third make was also from behind the arc but Illinois State answered with a 3 for an 18-point lead and the Redbirds led by double figures until the final minutes of the game.

The Redbirds led by as many as 20 points in the first half and had a 16-point advantage at the break.

Junior Etou made 13 of 14 free-throw attempts and scored a career-high 22 points for Tulsa, which missed its first eight field-goal attempts of the second half. The Golden Hurricane's were just 14-of-52 shooting (26.9 percent) and turned it over 18 times.

San Diego State beats USF for Diamond Head Classic title
                  December 25, 2016

HONOLULU (AP) Zylan Cheatham had 16 points and 11 rebounds to help San Diego State beat San Francisco 62-48 on Sunday night for the Diamond Head Classic championship.

San Diego State (8-4) hit nine 3-poiners against the Dons to set a tournament record with 29 makes over three games.

San Francisco got within two points - for the fourth time in the second half - with 11:46 remaining but the Dons couldn't get any closer the rest of the way. SDSU's Jeremy Hemsley hit a 3-pointer with 4:19 left for a 10-point lead.

Hemsley, who entered averaging 16.6 points in his sophomore season, picked up his fourth foul with 18:49 left in the second half and finished with 12 points. Malik Pope missed his second straight game for the Aztecs due to a knee injury suffered in the quarterfinals.

The Aztecs led 32-28 at halftime after shooting 50 percent. Charles Minlend kept USF close by making three 3-pointers and scoring 13 points.

Odds to win the college basketball national title:

                      3-1: Duke, Kentucky

                      5-1: UCLA

                      7-1: North Carolina, Kansas

                      8-1: Villanova

                      12-1: Baylor

                      15-1: Louisville-Indiana-Gonzaga

                      **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                      13) Cowboys 42, Lions 21— How does a team that has trailed in 4th quarter in 14 of 15 games still have a shot to make the playoffs? First half of this game was great but then Cowboys won going away, winning easily in a game they didn’t need.

Redskins are happier than hell; they’re in playoffs if they beat the Giants Sunday except for one incredible scenario. If Packers/Lions tie Sunday, they both make the playoffs. Imagine if that game goes overtime and both teams play cautiously, just to make playoffs? Wow.

                      12) Did Edwin Encarnacion turn down more money from the A’s than he took from Cleveland?

I can feel my blood pressure going up; A’s were going to sign him, then if they weren’t in the pennant race in July, trade him to a contender for prospects, the way they traded Matt Holliday and Ben Zobrist. Oakland’s starting pitching is better than it has been in couple years, so they could contend this year, if everything goes well.

Not often a player turns down more $$$ to sign elsewhere, especially if elsewhere is Cleveland.

                      11) Note to self; next year, when the Broncos play the Chiefs, there will be hard feelings, moreso than usual in this divisional rivalry, after Dontari Poe’s TD pass in the last 2:00 of Sunday nite’s win. Mr Poe is a defensive end who weighs over 300 pounds; him throwing a TD pass was the kind of stunt that gets remembered for a long time. Hopefully we can take advantage of that next year.

                      10) I was surprised by this: the mayor of New York City makes $225K. The governor of the state of New York only makes $179K. Shouldn’t a governor make more than a may0r?

                      9) Ravens’ WR Steve Smith was 11th wide receiver taken in the 2001 NFL Draft; the graduate of Santa Monica College and Utah is the only one of those 11 WR’s who is still playing in the NFL.

                      8) Houston Texans have been outscored by 42 points this season, but are in the playoffs.

                      7) When Jay Ajayi had his big run in overtime that set up the Dolphins’ game-winning FG Saturday, Buffalo only had ten men on the field. That kind of stuff gets coaches fired.

                      6) Matt Ryan has thrown TD passes to 13 different players this season, most in NFL history in one season.

                      5) Derek Carr is going to be the first-ever NFL QB to win 12+ regular season games but not make a playoff start- thats how unusual the timing of his injury was.

                      4) San Diego State 62, San Francisco 48— Aztecs win the Diamond Head tourney in Hawaii.

                      3) Nuggets 106, Clippers 102— No Paul, no Griffin, no Redick……no good.

                      2) Pistons 106, Cavaliers 90— Handicapping the NBA means you have to keep close tabs on who is “resting” that night. Lebron James “rested” last night and the Cavaliers got killed. Go figure.

1— 16 NFL games this Sunday, the way it should be. Most of the important games are at 4:00, except for the Detroit-Green Bay game, which is the night game. Should be quite a day.

                              • Preview: Scarlet Knights (11-2) at Badgers (11-2)
                                Date: December 27, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Big Ten pundits won't find many surprises with No. 14 Wisconsin, which returned its entire starting lineup from last season and has had the chance to show some depth from its bench.

The Badgers (11-2) cruised through its nonconference schedule with a couple of bumps against ranked opponents, losing to Creighton and North Carolina.

Wisconsin hosts Rutgers in a Big Ten opener for both teams on Tuesday at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. The Scarlet Knights (11-2) are aiming to make an impact in their third season in a conference in which they have yet to be serious contenders.

No Wisconsin starter played more than 22 minutes in the Badgers' 90-37 rout of Florida A&M on Dec. 23. Freshman guard D'Mitrik Trice scored a game-high 14 points in a reserve role.

According to Badgers coach Greg Gard, senior forward Vitto Brown had one of his strongest rebounding efforts of the season. Brown registered 11 points and had eight rebounds in 18 minutes against the Rattlers.

"I thought he rebounded as well as he has, maybe all year," Gard said of Brown, a starter who is averaging 3.8 rebounds per game along with 8.0 points.

"He was pretty active. That's one thing that he's trying to improve and find other ways to contribute other than just shooting -- defensively try to be more active, obviously, on the glass, being more of a presence on both ends of the floor."

Senior guard Bronson Koenig (14.6 ppg) and senior forward Nigel Hayes (13.5 ppg) continue to pace the Badgers on offense. In the past seven games, Hayes has shot 59.4 percent (38 of 64) from the field and averaged 16 ppg.

Gard said he's confident the Badgers are ready for Big Ten action. The Wisconsin coaching staff put the squad through a scrimmage last week, which ironed out a few things.

"We did a simulated game," Gard said. "It wasn't a complete 40 minutes, but it was 25, 28, or something like that. I think that helped.

"The mountain gets a lot steeper. The grade is going to up considerably from here on out."

Rutgers posted a 3-33 record in its first two seasons in the Big Ten. During that span, the team didn't win more than 12 games overall per season under former coach Eddie Jordan.

But there's optimism with Steve Pikiell, in his first year at Rutgers. Even though its nonconference slate wasn't terribly tough, he's proud of what his young players accomplished during the early season.

Pikiell said he wants to see the Scarlet Knights string together a complete game, and effort on defense is one of his main priorities.

Rutgers is fresh off a 72-61 road loss to intrastate foe Seton Hall. The Scarlet Knights led for a stretch and tied the score with 6:00 left in regulation.

Junior guard Mike Williams and sophomore guard Corey Sanders are Rutgers' returning starters. Williams is third in scoring at 11.4 ppg and pulls down 4.2 rpg. Sanders, who received All-Big Ten accolades during his freshman season, registers 10.7 ppg and paces the Scarlet Knights with 3.8 assists per game.

"I think we're prepared for the Big Ten," Pikiell said. "We're going to have to go on the road and go into some real tough places. People have a lot of questions about us, which is fine. I like this team.

"I know our weaknesses, I know our strengths -- we're going to be a tough team. We're going to defend and we're going to get better defensively. We have three more defenses we're putting in place as we move into league play."
