    December 10, 2016

All is not well in Gator Nation. The Florida football team repeated as SEC East champion with an epic win at LSU, but the Gators have taken double-digit pimpslaps at FSU and vs. Alabama in the last two weeks.

Although it won’t eliminate the pain of those defeats, perhaps UF fans can take some solace and sleep a touch better if the Gators can go into Tallahassee and beat the Seminoles in college hoops Sunday afternoon.

One offshore book opened FSU (9-1 straight up, 6-2 against the spread) as a 2.5-point home favorite.

Leonard Hamilton’s team is unbeaten in seven home games with a 4-1 spread record. The ‘Noles are off a 118-63 win over Nicholls St. as a 26-point home favorite. P.J. Savory led the way with a team-best 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting from 3-point range, while Xavier Rathan-Mayes produced 16 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals in only 22 minutes of playing time. Dwayne Bacon added 16 points, five boards and four assists without a turnover.

FSU is ranked eighth in the nation in scoring, averaging 90.3 points per game. The ‘Noles are fourth in the country in field-goal percentage (52.4%). They defend well also, ranking 13th in defensive field-goal percentage (36.2%) and 25th at defending the 3-point line (28.0%).

Jonathan Isaac, a 6’10” freshman forward who was a five-star recruit, has missed three straight games with a hip injury. Isaac, who averaged 15.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 blocked shots, 1.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game in the team’s first seven contests, is listed as ‘questionable’ against UF. Also, junior forward Phil Cofer (4.3 PPG, 2.3 RPG) is ‘questionable’ due to a foot injury that’s forced him to miss the last two games.

Bacon is averaging a team-best 16.6 PPG. He’s making 50.4 percent of his shots from the field and 40.9 percent from 3-point range. Savoy is averaging 12.8 PPG despite playing an average of only 12 minutes per contest. He is knocking down 51.7 percent of his launches from downtown.

Rathan-Mayes (9.8 PPG) can be an explosive scorer but is distributing more this season with a 50/20 assists-to-turnovers ratio. Trent Forrest, a true freshman out of Chipley High School, the same program that produced half-brothers Amp Lee and Tony Davis, is averaging 7.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and has a 26/11 assists-to-turnovers ratio.

FSU has been a single-digit favorite three times, compiling a 1-2 spread record. The Seminoles’ only defeat was an 89-86 setback vs. Temple at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. They own quality wins over the likes of George Washington, Minnesota and Illinois.

Florida (7-2 SU, 4-3 ATS) is off an 84-74 loss to Duke as a seven-point underdog Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Mike White’s second team at UF played well for the most part, but it gave up too many offensive rebounds that often resulted in wild scrambles, an extra Duke pass an open jumper for Luke Kennard, who hit 5-of-7 from 3-point land in a 29-point effort.

KeVaughn Allen wouldn’t let UF go away, though, scoring a team-best 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, including three buckets on five attempts from long distance. Kasey Hill contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Devin Robinson was also in double figures with 11 points. John Egbunu finished with nine points, 10 boards and a pair of blocked shots, but he was an abysmal 2-of-9 from the field.

UF still hasn’t played at home this year with the O-Dome’s $65 million renovation still in progress. The Gators are expected to play their first home game on Dec. 21 against Arkansas-Little Rock. They’ve played just one true road game, coasting to a 91-60 victory at North Florida in a non-lined affair.

This situation has led UF to play all across the Sunshine State to date, including games in Kissimmee, Lakeland, Orlando and Jacksonville. The Gators’ only other loss besides Duke came against Gonzaga (81-76). They have posted quality victories over Saint Bonaventure, Seton Hall and Miami, in addition to decent wins over mid-majors like Belmont, Mercer and Florida Gulf Coast.

Florida is 0-2 both SU and ATS in a pair of underdog spots.

Florida has plenty of size, depth and speed. The biggest improvement from this squad has been at the free-throw line. Atrocious shooting at the charity stripe has been the difference between the NIT and the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back campaigns. However, the Gators are making 75.1 percent from the line this year, which ranks 47th in the country.

Allen leads UF in scoring (13.3 PPG) and steals (1.6 SPG). Egbunu (9.1 PPG) averages team-highs in rebounds (7.8 RPG) and blocked shots (2.3 BPG). Robinson is scoring at a 11.7 PPG clip and is pulling down 5.4 RPG. Canyon Barry (11.4 PPG), a grad transfer from College of Charleston who is the youngest son of NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry, brings plenty of scoring punch off the bench for the Gators’ second unit.

Hill, the team’s starting senior point guard who was once a five-star recruit, is averaging 8.2 points, 4.1 assists, 2.89 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. His back-up, junior Chris Chiozza (6.2 PPG, 27/12 assists-to-turnovers ratio) out of Memphis, is listed as ‘questionable’ with a thigh contusion. Where I come from, we call that injury a ‘Charley Horse’ and I took many of those way back when the same way Chiozza did against Duke. As a big man came and set a pick on Chiozza, the knee went right into the 5’8” PG’s thigh as he was sliding his feet defensively.

The ‘over’ is 5-3 overall for FSU, 4-1 in its home outings. Meanwhile, UF has seen the ‘under’ go 4-3 overall.

When these schools met in Gainesville last year, FSU won a 73-71 decision as a 4.5-point road underdog. Bacon’s team-best 24 points paced the winners, while Allen had a game-high 32 points. The Seminoles have won back-to-back meetings and have covered in three straight.

Tip-off in Tally will take place at 4:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

    **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- The ‘under’ is 7-3 in the last 10 head-to-head meetings between UF and FSU.

-- Going back to last season, the ‘over’ is 7-1 in UF’s last eight road contests.

-- FSU’s Isaac has scored in double figures in all seven games he’s played. He has a pair of double-doubles to his credit, including a 14-13 effort in a 75-67 win over Minnesota.

-- Villanova remained undefeated Saturday afternoon in Newark, N.J., by rallying to clip previously-unbeaten Notre Dame by a 74-66 count. The Wildcats were led by Josh Hart, who finished with 37 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and four assists compared to merely one turnover. They took the cash as five-point favorites after trailing for the first 30-plus minutes of the game. The Irish were led by Matt Farrell and Steve Vasturia, who scored 18 points apiece.

-- Sunday is big for the SEC. The league sure could use a UF victory at FSU and an Alabama win at Oregon. Those would be two huge non-conference wins that would help the entire conference immensely.

    - -One offshore had the Ducks installed as 11.5-point home ‘chalk’ versus the Crimson Tide. This game will tip at 6:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- No. 6 Kentucky (8-1) has played its final game at Rupp Arena for the 2016 calendar year and now begins a four-game road swing on Sunday against Hofstra at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The game is part of a doubleheader in the Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival. St. John's, featuring second-year coach Chris Mullins, faces LIU-Brooklyn in the second contest.

"When you talk about the storied programs in college basketball, Kentucky's certainly one of the first to come out of your mouth," Hofstra coach Joe Mihalich said. "Our kids, for the rest of their lives, can tell their children, their grandchildren that they played against Kentucky in the Barclays Center on national TV."

Last year, Hofstra enjoyed a 24-10 season that included an NIT berth. This year, the Pride is 6-4 as they work to replace leading scorers Juan'ya Green and Ameen Tanksley.

Several candidates are coming to the forefront. Freshman point guard Eli Pemberton leads Hofstra in scoring at 15.3 points per game and followed by senior guard Brian Bernardi at 14.1 and senior guard Deron Powers (12.5). But the biggest name to leap off the page is junior center Rokas Gustys, who leads the nation in rebounding at 13.8 per game.

"We have the pieces," Mihalich said. "We just got to get them clicking at the right time, like we were able to do last year."

Hofstra has won four of its last five games. The Pride defeated South Dakota, Medaille, Columbia and Florida Atlantic before falling to St. Bonaventure 81-75 on Tuesday.

Kentucky's only loss was 97-92 to UCLA last Saturday, snapping its 42-game win streak at Rupp Arena. The Wildcats have beaten the likes of Michigan State, Arizona State and Valparaiso 87-63 in its last outing Wednesday.

The Wildcats, who average 94.2 points per game, are led in scoring by three guards. Freshman Malik Monk averages 19.3 points, sophomore Isaiah Briscoe 16.3 and freshman De'Aaron Fox is at 15.1 Freshman forward Bam Adebayo comes in at 12.4 points and a team-best 8.1 rebounds per game.

For coach John Calipari, the Hofstra game is the start of building momentum toward conference play.

"All we talked about was energy," Calipari said of this week's preparation. "I worked for two days just on our team."

Calipari is trying to build the urgency needed at this level on a team dominated by freshmen, including four in the starting lineup.

"If someone didn't play, I subbed them. You're out," Calipari said. "You're either playing like there's no tomorrow, and that doesn't mean foul and go nuts, it means you play with unbelievable energy or you're out. I'm playing somebody else."

To that end, Calipari changed up practice. Instead of starters going against backups, he pitted top guards Briscoe and Fox against one another.

"I put Isaiah opposite De'Aaron so they could go head-to-head, had two different teams and they competed like crazy," Calipari said. "If you practice that way, you'll play that way. If you're casual, you're casual in a shoot-around, you're going to play that way.

"That energy is how we have to come out every day, and it's hard," Calipari added. "But you know what? It is what it is and you're here. We're taking everybody's best shot so we got to disrupt, we got to be the aggressor, we got to attack the basket."

After Sunday's game in Brooklyn, Kentucky completes the road swing by facing North Carolina in Las Vegas on Dec. 17 and visiting Louisville on Dec. 21 before beginning Southeastern Conference play at Ole Miss on Dec. 29.

The Wildcats do not return to Rupp Arena until Jan. 3 against Texas A&M, marking 27 days away from home.

      • Preview: Volunteers (4-3) at Tar Heels (9-1)
        Date: December 11, 2016 5:00 PM EDT

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Moments of frustration seemed to be a sticking point with North Carolina since its last game, albeit a nine-point victory.

So the No. 7 Tar Heels have vowed to produce an upgrade against Tennessee on Sunday at the Smith Center.

"We definitely have to go back to the drawing board," forward Kennedy Meeks said. "We have to learn from it. We can't have too many bad film sessions throughout the year because that means we're not playing that great.

" ... That's the way the game goes sometimes. You have to just live with it and move on."

Tennessee (4-3) is playing its best so far with a three-game winning streak.

"We have to go in and know that Carolina is going to be on edge and we have to be ready to play right from the tip," Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said.

North Carolina (9-1) defeated Davidson, 83-74, but the margin was three points late in the game. The outcome seemed to stir regret from the Tar Heels by the way they performed.

"We've got to figure out some things," swingman Justin Jackson said.

The Tar Heels might have to do it again without junior point guard Joel Berry, who missed the Davidson game after suffering a sprained ankle last Sunday against Radford.

Berry's status is questionable for the Tennessee game.

That put Nate Britt, who had been a part-time starter on the wing, at starting point guard, although Seventh Woods and Stilman White were also used.

White scored on six free throws for a career high mark, logging 15 minutes for the senior's third-most court time in his career. His only longer playing time came in two NCAA Tournament games as a freshman in March 2012 when he was pressed into duty after Kendall Marshall was injured.

White took a two-year Mormon mission before returning to the Tar Heels.

"I told Stilman the other day he has done some nice things for us in practice," Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said. "He really has done a great job of running the scout team. I think he gave us a big lift."

Jackson's seven 3-pointers in the Davidson game picked up some of the perimeter scoring. Jackson has 22 baskets from 3-point range this season, while last season he didn't make is 22nd 3-pointer until the 28th game.

However, Barnes is concerned about what the Tar Heels might be able to do closer to the basket.

"We certainly don't have the size they have," Barnes said. "We've talked a lot about rebounding. ... You just have to be impressed that they play a very high-efficiency type of basketball."

Tennessee is coming off an encouraging game when it tied a school record with 16 made 3-point baskets against Presbyterian.

The Volunteers, who are facing a Top 10 opponent in a non-conference game for the first time since 2011, will be playing in their first true road game of the season.

"We have to go in there and stick to the scouting report," Tennessee guard Shembari Phillips said. "Teams like that, it's a real test."

North Carolina leads the series 8-1, although this will be the first meeting in Chapel Hill since 1948 in Woollen Gym. So the Volunteers have never played at the Smith Center.

"It's a cool experience, but it's also a great opportunity," Tennessee forward Lew Evans said.

Barnes, a North Carolina native, is considered a villain of sorts in Chapel Hill. While the Clemson coach, he had a well-publicized feud with then-Tar Heels coach Dean Smith in the mid-1990s.

However, Barnes said Smith is one of the coaches he studied and admired as he entered the coaching profession. He said the chance to bring his team to the Smith Center is a good situation.

"I have nothing but great respect for (North Carolina's) program," he said.

        • Preview: Crimson Tide (4-3) at Ducks (7-2)
          Date: December 11, 2016 6:00 PM EDT

EUGENE, Ore. -- With finals finished, Oregon can focus on basketball for the next month.

The 24th-ranked Ducks (7-2) are back on the court for the first time in eight days when they host Alabama (4-3) Sunday at 3 p.m. Oregon won its fifth straight game with a 128-59 win over Savannah State on Dec. 3 before taking finals week off from games.

"The next three or four weeks are really important for this team," coach Dana Altman said. "We have to get so much better in so many areas. We only have four games before conference play. Alabama is up next and then we have one day before Montana and then UNLV in Portland before we come back and play Fresno State. We will give them four days off for Christmas and then it is conference time."

Oregon's sense of urgency is ramped up by the fact it opens Pac-12 play against No. 2 UCLA on Dec. 28.

"With as many guys as we have back, we shouldn't be making the mistakes we make," Altman said. "Defensively and offensively, we're making mistakes that veteran teams probably should not make."

Oregon returned four starters from last year, when it went 31-7 and reached the Elite Eight, but its best player has been slowed early in the season following foot surgery in July. Six-foot-seven all-conference junior forward Dillon Brooks missed the first three games of the season and is averaging 18.2 minutes per game off the bench in his first six games back.

"It is all up to coach," Brooks said. "He keeps on saving it and saving it, but he's going to let the beast loose soon."

Brooks is averaging 13.7 points in limited time and Altman indicated he will return to the starting line-up soon.

"I'm almost 100 percent, just trying to get in shape a bit more," Brooks said. "I feel good and my teammates keep pushing me to go harder and push harder, so it goes great."

Oregon is coming off a blowout win over Savannah State, when it set single-game school records for points in a game as well as field goals (54) and assists (36).

Sophomore guard Tyler Dorsey scored a career-high 29 points against the Tigers and now leads the Ducks with 13.8 points per game. Senior center Chris Boucher is averaging 13.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocked shots.

Alabama (4-3) has also had more than a week off since losing 77-68 at Texas.

Six-foot-eight freshman Braxton Key leads the Tide with 10.4 points per game while freshman guard Dazon Ingram averages 10.3 points and 4.4 assists.

Alabama will be without junior guard Nick King, who is averaging 3.3 points and 2.9 rebounds. King started two games, but has an unknown illness that caused him to lose 10 pounds.

"He hasn't been able to sleep and eat," Alabama coach Avery Johnson said. "It's not something that's normal."

          • Preview: Anteaters (5-5) at Gaels (6-1)
            Date: December 11, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

No. 12 Saint Mary's will be a top-25 team for at least one more game, as the Gaels host UC Irvine (5-5) in an 8 p.m. ET game Sunday in Moraga, Calif.

Whether the Gaels remain ranked might depend on how they respond to Thursday's 15-point home loss to Texas-Arlington.

"If you get beat, then you have to bounce back," Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett said after the 65-51 loss to Texas-Arlington.

Before that game, Arlington coach Scott Cross said the Gaels "are nearly unbeatable at home."

Well, the Mavericks showed they are beatable at McKeon Pavilion, where the Gaels had won 23 of their last 24 games before being dominated by Arlington.

The Gaels (6-1) were limited to 31.4 percent shooting after coming into the game shooting 53.2 percent, third in the country. Saint Mary's averaged only nine turnovers in its first six games, but had 10 in the first half against Arlington.

"We just ... I don't know," Bennett said. "I can't put my finger on it. I thought we got outplayed in every phase."

Was it the five-day layoff after their road victory over Stanford? Was it the loss of focus because St. Mary's had final exams this week? Is Saint Mary's susceptible to teams with quickness, as it seemed Thursday? Is Saint Mary's simply not as good as its ranking suggested?

"Turnovers and rebounding is what bothered me most ... and defense," Bennett said.

Guard Emmett Naar, who averaged 7.7 assists through six games this season and was the Gaels' leading scorer when he was an all-conference selection last season, was limited to two points and one assist while committing three turnovers against Arlington.

Center Jock Landale leads the Gaels in scoring at 18.9 points while hitting 70.1 percent of his shots.

The Gaels hope to regain their confidence against UC Irvine. The Anteaters had not played a home game since Nov. 19 before beating Division III Pomona Pitzer 80-53 on Friday, and Sunday's game will begin another stretch of five straight road games for Irvine.

The Anteaters lost to Arizona in Tucson by 18 points on Tuesday, and their most recent win over a Division I team came on Nov. 30, when they won at Santa Clara 58-55.

"I'm excited to win a close game in a road environment and with a young team," Irvine head coach Russell Turner said after beating the Broncos.

Winning a close game was critical because two weeks earlier the Anteaters let a 13-point, second-half lead get away in an overtime loss to Cal, which was ranked 25th at the time.

"I'm proud of our guys, but to be what I think we can be, we will have to finish better than that," Turner said after that loss.

The Anteaters missed a chance for their first win against a top-25 team in 11 years. Irvine will have another chance against a ranked team on Sunday.

Arlington was 0-28 against top-25 teams before its convincing victory on Thursday.

Irvine uses depth to try to outlast opponents, with 10 players averaging more than 10 minutes a game and only one averaging more than 23. The one player who gets more court time is Jaron Martin, the team's leading scorer at 13.4 points per game.

The Anteaters have been without their best player, guard Luke Nelson, all season. A first-team All-Big West Conference selection last season, Nelson is out indefinitely because of a hamstring injury.

On Nov. 29, Turner told the Orange County Register that Nelson was close to returning.

"It's a tough deal because he's got a hamstring issue, which is difficult to define," Turner said. "I feel like he is close to playing. But until he is 100 percent, I'm going to be cautious with that, and that's because the conference race and the conference tournament specifically are so much more vital than the games that we're playing now."

It is uncertain whether Nelson will make his season debut Sunday.

                        December 11, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) Malik Monk scored 20 points, Isaiah Briscoe had 19 and No. 6 Kentucky took control with a 26-3 run spanning halftime in a 96-73 victory over Hofstra on Sunday in the Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival at Barclays Center.

De'Aaron Fox had 15 points and Bam Adebayo added 14 for Kentucky (9-1). The Wildcats closed the first half on a 12-0 run and opened the second with a 14-3 spurt to go ahead 62-36 with 16 minutes to play.

The Pride (6-5), who came in having won four of five, stayed with the Wildcats for 16 minutes, trailing 36-33 with 4 minutes left in the first half. Deron Powers had 18 points for Hofstra in the first meeting between the schools.

Monk had seven of the points in the 12-0 run and Adebayo had six in the 14-3 run. Kentucky started dominating inside, finishing with a 48-28 advantage in the paint, and on the perimeter, shooting 51.4 percent overall and 8 of 23 from 3-point range.

Justin Wright-Foreman had 14 points for Hofstra and Rokas Gustys added 13.

                        NO. 7 NORTH CAROLINA 73, TENNESSEE 71

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Justin Jackson scored the go-ahead basket with 2:14 left to help North Carolina rally from 15 down to beat Tennessee.

Freshman Brandon Robinson added a key tip-in with 52.4 seconds left for the Tar Heels (10-1). Tennessee (4-4) had a last chance to tie, but Tony Bradley Jr. blocked Lamonte Turner's drive.

North Carolina shot just 40 percent, with Jackson managing seven points on 3-for-15 shooting. Sophomore Kenny Williams III had 12 points, while Nate Britt had 11 points, seven assists and five steals in place of point guard Joel Berry II, who missed his second straight with an ankle injury.

Robert Hubbs III led Tennessee with 21 points.

                        NO. 12 SAINT MARY'S 84, UC IRVINE 53

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) - Jock Landale had 15 points and seven rebounds, Evan Fitzner added a season-high 12 points and Saint Mary's bounced back from its first loss of the season.

Saint Mary's (7-1) was crisp offensively most of the game and shot 56.3 percent from the floor, a vast improvement from two nights earlier when the Gaels went 16 of 51 in a 65-51 loss to Texas-Arlington.

Eyassu Workue scored 14 points for the Anteaters (5-6).

                        FLORIDA STATE 83, NO. 21 FLORIDA 79

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Dwayne Bacon scored 24 points, Terrence Mann added 16 and Florida State held on to beat Florida.

Bacon scored nine points during a 15-4 run early in the second half that helped the Seminoles (10-1) take control after it was tied at 38.

Florida State led by 13 midway through the second half before the Gators (7-3) started to slowly chip away. Florida used a 14-5 run to get within three, but could not get closer.

Kasey Hill scored a career-high 21 points for Florida, and KeVaughn Allen added 15.

                        NO. 24 OREGON 63, ALABAMA 56

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Tyler Dorsey scored 19 points and Dylan Ennis hit the tiebreaking 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to help Oregon beat Alabama.

Dillon Brooks and Chris Boucher added 10 points each for the Ducks (8-2). They won their sixth consecutive game and 31st in a row at home.

Ennis' shot started a 9-0 run for the Ducks to finish the game after Donta Hall's fifth dunk tied it for Alabama at 56-all with 3:16 left to play. Hall led the Crimson Tide (4-4) with 14 points.

Brooks found Ennis open on the right wing after getting caught in the air on a baseline drive. Ennis and Brooks each had six of Oregon's 18 assists.

                          Strong week for popular opinion

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday…..

Titans 13, Broncos 10— Tennessee has to be excited; they’re 7-6, tied for first in AFC South and they have the Rams’ #1 draft pick next year, so they’ll clean up next April and get even better. This was an ugly game; Titans scored 10 points on first two possessions, then held on for the win despite gaining only 178 yards the rest of the game. Mariota was 6-20/88 passing, but his team won. Five of last six Denver games stayed under the total.

Panthers 28, Chargers 16— San Diego turned ball over five times (-4). I have a question: Why can’t the Chargers just stay in San Diego and play in Qualcomm? Why is it better for them to move to LA and be a second rate tenant in a new ballpark? Who will go to their games there? At least in San Diego they have a whole city behind them, buying their gear, Maybe I’m an idiot, but seems to me every NFL team doesn’t need a brand-new stadium.

Texans 22, Colts 17— Houston is tied for first with Titans in AFC South; they ran ball for 185 yards, had 3 takeaways (+2), kicked five FGs- usually when a team scores one TD and kicks five FGs, they lose. Colts are 1-4-1 vs spread this year in game following a win; some teams cannot stand prosperity. This is only second time Texans have won in Indy (2-13). Under is 5-2 in last seven Houston games, 4-0 in Colts’ last four home games.

Bengals 23, Browns 10— I’m still amazed that an NFL franchise is worth roughly $1B, give or take, and the Browns are being run by Jonah Hill’s character from Moneyball. Seriously, why would you have a guy who spent most of the last 15 years as a baseball executive run your NFL team? It makes zero bleeping sense. Cleveland is 1-5-1 vs spread as a home underdog, losing home games by 5-20-3-25-15-14-13 points

Steelers 27, Bills 20— Pittsburgh ran ball for 240 yards in the snow, amidst rumors that Rex Ryan is going to get fired. If Ryan and Jeff Fisher both get fired, then maybe their teams can hire coaches who actually care about offense and the league will put out a better product. Pittsburgh has now won/covered its last four games.

Non-football observation: if you’re going to be outside in a snowstorm for 3.5 hours, put on a goddamn coat. Rex Ryan wore same clothes for this game he wore in the LA Coliseum when the Bills played there. Even his brother wore a parka.

Dolphins 26, Cardinals 23— Game was played in a monsoon; Arizona’s kicker had an awful day, but did make a 56-yard FG. Miami kicked FG on last play to win, but they lost QB Tannehill to an ACL injury, so looks like Matt Moore gets to run the ball club the rest of the way- their #3 QB is former Western Kentucky QB Doughty. Arizona needs to draft a QB next spring; Carson Palmer is getting up there in years.

NFC West went 0-4 Sunday, turning ball over 15 times and 49ers didn’t have any turnovers.

Lions 20, Bears 17— Detroit is now 9-4 despite trailing in 4th quarter in 12 of 13 games. You know it might be the Lions’ year when Stafford throws a pick-6 to give Chicago a 17-13 lead with 7:07 left, but Detroit drives back down field to score game-winning TD with 3:17 left. Lions are 6-1 at home with four wins by exactly three points.

Pretty sure I’m going to be in Las Vegas when the NFL schedule comes out for 2017; first thing I’m going to do is bet the under on the Lions’ win total for next year.

Vikings 25, Jaguars 16— Minnesota ran ball 29 times for 85 yards (28 for 70 if you take out one Bradford scramble for 15 yards); they scored only 16 points on five red zone drives, but won anyway. Jaguars are 0-6 at home, have lost eight games in a row (2-6 vs spread). Vikings had been 2-6 this season when they didn’t score a TD on defense/special teams, now they’re 3-6.

Mike Zimmer coached this game with his right eye totally covered by tape; he is one tough human. He wore sunglasses when Minnesota had the ball, but took them off so he could read his defensive call charts when Jaguars had the ball. Lot of admiration for coach Zimmer.

Bucs 16, Saints 11— Sean Payton was yukking it up two weeks ago when he ran the score up on the sorry Rams, but since then his team scored a total of 24 points in losses to Detroit, Tampa Bay. New Orleans is 5-8 and going nowhere with an aging QB; they’re 0-6 when they score less than 25 points. Under is 5-2 in Saints’ last seven games, 2-0-1 in Bucs’ last three.

Tampa Bay has won five games in a row and is looking smart for drafting Jameis Winston.

Redskins 27, Eagles 22— Washington won last five meetings with Philly, with average total in last six series games, 53.8; Eagles scored one offensive TD on 17 drives in two games with Redskins this year. Over is 11-2 in Washington games this season.

Jets 23, 49ers 17 OT— Niners snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, blowing a 17-3 halftime lead, losing their 12th straight game. Bryce Petty gets his first NFL win. Weird that SF was favored in its last two games, despite being an awful team.

I’m wondering if the networks stopped showing Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the National Anthem because he said he didn’t vote on Election Day. Just curious, thats all.

Packers 38, Seahawks 10— Seattle has now lost their last seven visits here; they’re 1-4-1 this season when scoring less than 26 points. Somehow, Green Bay’s defense has revived itself, allowing 36 points in last three games, after allowing 153 points in the four games before that- they had six takeaways in this game. Seattle is 2-4-1 on the road and they’ve fallen out of the #2 slot in the NFC, so they might be going on the road in the second week of the playoffs.

Falcons 42, Rams 14— Observations from this game and with apologies to the Falcons, I’ve got nothing to say about them— picked them last week and they lost.

                          — Rams should fire their head coach today, just to save everyone three more weeks of aggravation.

                          — Last three weeks: L21-49, L10-26, L14-42. Unacceptable results. Sometimes divorce is a good thing— just ask my ex-wife (its a joke!!!)

                          — The next coach should a) be an offensive guru or b) hire an offensive guru to be OC and yes, I’m thinking of Norv Turner, if we go the OC way.

                          — Find the best offensive line coach in America and pay him a boatload of cash to come to LA.

                          — They can keep Gregg Williams and John Fassel; defense/special teams ain’t the problem.

                          — Here are some W-L records of how QBs did their rookie year: Elway 4-6, PManning 3-13, EManning 1-6, Aikman 0-11, Stafford 2-8, Marino 7-2. Playing QB in the NFL is a hard job.

                          — I pay more money than I should for DirecTV, for one reason; to watch NFL games on Sundays, specifically the Rams. 13 consecutive non-winning seasons is getting my money’s worth.

Giants 10, Cowboys 7— Dak Prescott grew up in Louisiana; wonder if he ever played in a frigid night game before? Dallas is 11-2 with two losses to the Giants by total of four points. If playoffs started tomorrow, NFC Wild Card game would be Bucs @ Giants. AFC would be either Miami/Denver @ Oakland. Last five Giant games stayed under the total.
