  • Wednesday's Tip Sheet
    December 7, 2016

    **Davidson at North Carolina**

-- North Carolina (8-1 straight up, 5-2 against the spread) is seventh in the Associated Press rankings and No. 17 in the RPI. The Tar Heels won the Maui Classic with wins over Chaminade (104-61), Oklahoma State (107-75) and Wisconsin (71-56). They also rolled to an 83-68 win at Hawaii two days before the Maui Classic started.

-- North Carolina will be without star point guard Joel Berry II, who is averaging 14.8 points, 4.7 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game. The junior sprained his ankle in Sunday’s 95-50 win over Radford.

-- As of early this morning, most books had UNC listed as a 15.5-point ‘chalk,’ while one offshore shop had a total of 154.

-- One week after knocking off the Badgers in Hawaii, Roy Williams’s squad took its first loss at Indiana. The Hoosiers won a 76-65 decision as 5.5-point home underdogs at Assembly Hall in Bloomington. The 143 combined points dipped ‘under’ the 164.5-point tally. Justin Jackson led the Tar Heels with 21 points and eight boards.

-- UNC has won all three of its home games at the Dean Smith Center, going 2-0 ATS. In Sunday’s victory over Radford, Kenny Williams scored 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting from downtown. The sophomore guard has hit 13-of-26 shots from 3-point land after going 1-of-13 from beyond the arc last season. Kennedy Meeks added 13 points and nine rebounds.

-- UNC is 3-1-1 ATS in its five games as a double-digit favorite.

-- Davidson (5-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) is led by senior point guard Jack Gibbs, who is averaging 23.3 points, 4.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game. The Wildcats have another elite player in junior forward Peyton Aldridge, who is averaging 19.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

-- Bob McKillop’s squad has been an underdog once this year, losing 95-78 to Clemson while catching 3.5 points in Kissimmee, Fla. Aldridge had 22 points and eight boards, while Gibbs finished with 18 points and four assists before fouling out.

-- Davidson has wins over Missouri (70-55) and Arizona State (68-60) in Florida and it also won 78-57 at Mercer as a four-point road favorite. The Wildcats’ other loss came in their last outing, a 76-61 loss Sunday at College of Charleston. Gibbs had 23 points and five boards in the losing effort, while Aldridge finished with 21 points and eight rebounds.

-- The ‘under’ is 5-2 overall for UNC, 2-0 in its home contests.

-- The ‘under’ is 4-3 overall for the Wildcats, 1-1 in its two true road assignments.

-- Davidson is seventh in the country in free-throw shooting (79.8%). Meanwhile, UNC is eighth in the nation in scoring (90.2 points per game) and 12th in field-goal percentage (50.6%).

-- Tip-off in Chapel Hill is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

    **Washington at Gonzaga**

-- As of early this morning, most betting shops had Gonzaga (8-0 SU, 3-2 ATS) installed as a 15.5-point favorite. One offshore book had the total at 165.5.

-- Mark Few’s team will host its in-state rival tonight at The McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane. This is the first time these schools, which are separated by just 279 miles, have square off on another’s home court in a decade. They last met at the Battle 4 Atlantis last season with the Bulldogs collecting an 80-64 win as 9.5-point favorites.

-- Gonzaga has won nine of the last 10 head-to-head meetings going back to the Casey Calvary Era (1998), producing an 8-2 spread record.

-- Gonzaga’s Nigel Williams-Goss, a transfer from UW, will be facing his former school. Williams-Goss is the Bulldogs’ second-leading scorer, averaging 12.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. Josh Perkins is the team’s leading scorer (13.1 PPG) who has drained 20-of-39 attempts from 3-point land (51.3%). Zach Collins, a seven-foot freshman center, is also averaging in double figures (11.1 PPG), as is Missouri transfer Johnathan Williams (10.0 PPG).

-- Gonzaga won the AdvoCare Invitational in Kissimmee with wins over Quinnipiac (82-62), Florida (77-72) and Iowa State (73-71). Williams-Goss was the catalyst in the finals against the Cyclones, producing 18 points, four boards and four assists.

-- Washington (4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS) is looking to avoid a third consecutive loss. The back-to-back defeats, both of which came to TCU, were preceded by a four-game winning streak after the Huskies lost their opener to Yale, 98-90, as 14.5-point home ‘chalk.’ The Horned Frogs beat UW 93-80 at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on Nov. 26 and then took it to the Huskies again 86-71 in Ft. Worth on Nov. 30.

-- Washington is led by freshman guard Markelle Fultz, a five star recruit who is averaging team-bests in scoring (22.7 PPG), assists (6.6 APG) and steals (2.1 SPG). Fultz is making 54.0 percent of its shots from the field and 48.1 percent from 3-point range. Fultz, who is also blocking 1.4 shots per game, scored a career-high 35 points vs. Cal-State Fullerton and also dropped 30 on Yale in the opener.

-- Noah Dickerson, UW’s sophomore forward who was originally signed by Billy Donovan in his last recruiting haul for Florida, was released from his letter of intent when Donovan bolted for the NBA. Dickerson has thrived with the Huskies and is averaging 11.3 points and 7.1 RPG while making a team-high 57.9 percent of his attempts from the floor.

-- Washington is winless both SU and ATS in both of its underdog spots, both of which came to TCU.

-- The ‘over’ is 4-3 overall for the Huskies, but they saw the ‘under’ cash in their only road game.

-- The ‘under’ is 4-1 overall for Gonzaga, 1-0 in its one home game with a total.

    -- Tip-off is scheduled for 11:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

    **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Rhode Island star Hassan Martin is out indefinitely with a quadriceps injury. “The senior forward has begun treatment and rehab with the timetable of a full recovery and return to the court,” said a statement released by the school. Martin averages 16.1 points and 8.1 RPG. He’s third in the nation in blocked shots, rejecting 3.9 balls per game.

-- Luke Kennard’s timely shooting sparked Duke to an 84-74 win over Florida as a 7.5-point favorite Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Kennard scored 29 points on electric 11-of-16 shooting from the field, including five 3-balls on just seven launches. Kennard looked like a combination of former Warrior stars Chris Mullin and Sarunas Marciulionis. The 158 combined points sailed ‘over’ the 147.5-point tally. Amile Jefferson added 24 points and 15 rebounds, while Jayson Tatum produced 22 points, eight rebounds and three steals in his second collegiate game. The Gators were led by sophomore guard KeVaughn Allen, who had 21 points on 8-of-12 attempts from the field. Kasey Hill had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

-- In the lid-lifter of the Jimmy V Classic at MSG, Purdue smashed Arizona State 97-64 as an 11.5-point ‘chalk.’ Isaac Haas led the way with 16 points and seven rebounds. Vince Edwards came off the bench to contribute 16 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 21 minutes of playing time.

-- Florida Atlantic went into Columbus last night and stunned Ohio State 79-77 in overtime as a 20.5-point road underdog. The Owls won on Nick Rutherford’s shot in the lane that he kissed home off the glass with one second remaining. They cashed monster +2125 tickets for their money-line backers at 5Dimes.eu (risk $100 to win $2,125!).

-- The defending national champs improved to 9-0 with last night’s 89-79 win over La Salle at the Palestra in Philadelphia. Villanova’s Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart paced the winners with 26 and 21 points, respectively. Jay Wright’s program won its 17th consecutive Big Five game, but the Explorers covered the number as 17.5-point underdogs. For those not familiar with Philly hoops, members of the Big Five in the City of Brotherly love include Villanova, La Salle, Penn, Temple and Saint Joseph’s. The Wildcats face Notre Dame in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Saturday. Phil Booth missed his fifth consecutive game with a knee injury.

-- Harvard took the cash in last night’s 86-80 over Northeastern as a 2.5-point home favorite. Seth Towns led the way for the Crimson with 24 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Siyani Chambers added 13 points and 11 assists compared to merely one turnover. Corey Johnson finished with 21 points on stellar 7-of-10 shooting from downtown.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Brenton Scott scored 25 points and Matt Van Scyoc added a career-high 23 points to lead Indiana State to a 72-71 upset of No. 16 Butler Wednesday night at Hulman Center.

After Indiana State's Jordan Barnes missed the front end of a one-and-one situation, Butler's Tyler Lewis tied the game at 71-71 with two free throws with 11.5 seconds left.

Scott hit the first of two free throws with 1.5 seconds left to give Indiana State a one-point lead. Butler's Kelan Martin missed a shot beyond half-court at the buzzer.

The Bulldogs' record dropped to 8-1 while Indiana State improved to 5-4.

Van Scyoc hit six 3-pointers, including four in the second half.

          No. 7 North Carolina 83, Davidson 74

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Justin Jackson matched his career high with 27 points as North Carolina fended off visiting Davidson at the Smith Center.

Jackson, a junior, hit a career-high seven 3-point baskets coming off a game with a season-low eight points against Radford. The 3-pointers were one short of the school record held by six players.

Isaiah Hicks' 13 points and Luke Maye's 10 points (all in the first half) helped the Tar Heels (9-1).

Davidson guard Jack Gibbs poured in 30 points and Peyton Aldridge had 22 points for Davidson (5-3), which lost for the second time in four days.

          No. 8 Gonzaga 98, Washington 71

Jordan Mathews, a former California guard, contributed 14 points on 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range against his former Pac-12 rival. Williams-Goss, who transferred to Gonzaga from Washington after the 2014-15 season, made 9 of his 13 field goal attempts and had five rebounds and five assists.

Washington (4-4) lost its third consecutive game while Gonzaga improved to 9-0 for the first time since 2012-13. The Huskies were led by freshman point guard Markelle Fultz's 25 points. The high-profile NBA prospect finished shooting 10 of 26 from the floor with 10 rebounds.

After Louisville scored the first 10 points of the game as Southern Illinois missed five straight shots, Salukis coach Barry Hinson called a timeout to gather his team. It didn't slow down the onslaught as Louisville pushed the lead to 13-0 before Southern Illinois (5-4) scored with 14:55 remaining before halftime.

Mike Rofriguez and Sean O'Brien finished with 15 apiece for Southern Illinois.

          • Thursday’s six-pack

            — Ian Desmond signs with Colorado for five years, $70M; he is expected to play 1B, unless the Rockies trade one of their OFs.

            — White Sox traded Adam Eaton to Washington; they got four prospects in return. Eaton is overvalued by the sabermetric guys.

            — Colorado 68, Xavier 66— Important win for the Pac-12.

            — Grand Canyon 76, San Diego State 72— Very bad loss for the Mountain West.

            — Aroldis Chapman gets $86M for five years to be the closer in the Bronx.

            — Cubs replace Chapman by trading Jorge Soler to the Royals for Wade Davis.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

            13) Used to be I bought the NBA League Pass in part just to watch the Warriors play; their games were so much fun and Golden State has long played a wide-open, entertaining style.

Now that Kevin Durant stuffed the ballot box in trying to win a championship ring, Golden State isn’t fun to watch anymore; they’ve already won eight games by 23+ points. Close games are fun to watch; when it is 70-43 in the second quarter, not so much.

            12) That said, Klay Thompson scored 60 points against Indiana Monday night; he made 21 baskets. On the 21 touches where he scored those hoops, he dribbled a total of 11 times. Catch-and-shoot…..get open and drill a jumper.

Kids who are interesting in learning the right way to play should watch Thompson and Steph Curry; they are so fundamentally sound in getting open and teammates give them great passes.

            11) It is a good week to play basketball for Duke; they played Florida in New York City Tuesday and now they’re going to Las Vegas to play UNLV Saturday. Pretty good week for a college kid.

            10) During the Jet game Monday night, Jon Gruden seemed annoyed that Baylor’s football team doesn’t have an actual playbook; he mentioned it more than once. It is a little unusual.

Speaking of Baylor and the Jets, Bryce Petty will start the Jets’ last four games, which seems like a good idea. At least they can get an idea if he’s good enough to be their QB moving forward.

            9) Odd Fact of the Day: Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins both have only one home loss this season, both to the Tennessee Titans. Wouldn’t have guessed that.

            8) This is crazy; LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda will make $5.5M over the next three years- thats almost $2M a year, and he isn’t the head coach!!!

            7) Former Alabama QB Blake Barnett, who started the Crimson Tide’s first game this year, has transferred to Arizona State

            6) LA Clippers played 21 games in the first 36 days of the season; this week was the first time since October they two off days in a row.

            5) Before the Lions won in New Orleans Sunday, they had lost 22 road games in row the week after Thanksgiving. Figuring Detroit usually has three extra days to prepare after playing on Thanksgiving Day, losing 22 games in a row is pretty dismal, even if they were all road games.

            4) Over their last eight games, Jacksonville Jaguars are -16 (2-18) in turnovers.

            3) Indiana State 72, Butler 71— Sycamore fans stormed the court after this upset, which happened on Larry Bird’s 60th birthday.

            2) Supposedly, Sylvester Stallone wrote the original Rocky screenplay in 3.5 days.

1— I mentioned this a few weeks ago, but only in passing; here are the Jets’ last five coaches, with their record in their first season, and then their record the rest of their time with the Jets:

Al Groh: 9-7, left after one year
            Herm Edwards: 10-6, 29-35
            Eric Mangini: 10-6, 13-19
            Rex Ryan: 9-7, 37-43
            Todd Bowles: 10-6, 3-9

I can’t think of a reason why this is, except that there is incredible negativity involved in the New York press when it comes to the Jets, and it spreads to the fans. Once things start to go bad, it gets worse quickly.

                  • Preview: Cyclones (6-2) at Hawkeyes (4-5)
                    Date: December 08, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

It might not have the national cachet of Duke-North Carolina or Kentucky-Louisville.

But the yearly meeting of No. 25 Iowa State and Iowa, which occurs Thursday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, has a special meaning all its own, according to Iowa coach Fran McCaffery.

"This is a rivalry that means a lot to a lot of people," he said. "It means a lot to both teams for RPI, national rankings and NCAA Tournament potential. It has a lot of importance."

Even this season, with the Hawkeyes stumbling out of the gate to a 4-5 start that includes a four-game losing streak, including a bad home loss to an Omaha team that the Cyclones (6-2) routed 91-47 on Monday night, this game is one that's circled on everyone's calendar in Iowa.

How meaningful is this game? When a ranked Iowa State rallied from a 20-point deficit last season to topple the unranked Hawkeyes 83-82 in Ames on Monte Morris' floater with nine seconds left, Cyclones students stormed the floor and actually broke the leg of a Des Moines columnist on press row.

During a Tuesday press conference, second-year Iowa State coach Steve Prohm was still marveling at how his crowd reacted to the opening stages of the team's rally.

"This crowd was going crazy when we cut the lead from 20 to 18," he said. "A lot of places, the crowd would be quiet or booing. Iowa just came out and hit us in the mouth, but that was as good a rivalry performance as I've seen."

Morris led the charge last season with 20 points, nine assists and just one turnover, and Matt Thomas fired in six 3-pointers and 19 points. It was the third straight Cyclones win in the series, matching the program's all-time high against its rival.

If it's going to make it four straight, Iowa State will probably need to score a lot of points. Although the Hawkeyes are nowhere close to the ability of last year's team that was ranked in the top five at one point in February, they are still averaging 86.7 points per game.

Senior guard Peter Jok is the name of the game for Iowa. The lone returning starter from last season's team, Jok is firing in 23.9 ppg, hitting nearly 40 percent of his 3-pointers and going 47 of 51 at the foul line.

"He can get his shot any time he wants, whether they run good offense or bad offense," Prohm said of Jok. "We have to do a good job denying him the catch. Our defense will have to travel over there."

Cordell Pemsl (10.6) is also averaging in double figures for the Hawkeyes, which are still in the process of figuring out a playing rotation. Nine players have started games and only Jok has started all nine games.

Morris (14.2 ppg, 6.3 assists) leads four Cyclones in extra digits. Deonte Burton (14.1 ppg, 7.6 rebounds), Nazareth Mitrou-Long (12.8 ppg, 6.0 rebounds) and Thomas (11.3 ppg, 5.0 rebounds) can also score 25 on any night.

                    • Preview: Mavericks (7-3) at Gaels (6-0)
                      Date: December 08, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

Saint Mary's plays all five of its remaining non-conference games at home against unranked foes, starting with Thursday's game against Texas-Arlington, and that gives the No. 12 Gaels (6-0) a chance to enter West Coast Conference play unbeaten.

However, the Mavericks (7-3) pose a significant threat. They were picked to win the Sun Belt Conference title in the preseason poll, and won six games in a row, including an 11-point victory over Texas on the Longhorns' home court Nov. 29.

"Very, very proud of our guys," Arlington coach Scott Cross said after the win over Texas. "We finally put it all together for two halves. We've been through a lot of adversity early on in the season when we weren't playing the way we were capable of. Our guys figured it out that we have to play together and that we have to be great on the boards. We have to take good shots. We have to have player and ball movement. They did those things tonight."

Arlington is led by a trio of players -- guard Jalen Jones, who leads the team in scoring at 13.8 points and has made 46.7 percent of his 3-pointers; forward Kevin Hervey, the preseason Sun Belt Conference player of the year who is averaging 13.4 points and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds, and guard Erick Neal, who is scoring 9.3 points per game while handing out 6.8 assists per contest.

Neal had 15 points, 13 assists and zero turnovers in Arlington's 99-49 victory over Division III Texas-Dallas on Monday.

"It is safe to say that Erick Neal was the best point guard in the country tonight," Cross said. "To have 13 assists with no turnovers and add in 15 points on just nine shots to go with five steals is a very efficient performance."

Obviously, Saint Mary's will be a step up in class from UT-Dallas.

The Gaels have succeeded with teamwork, sound fundamentals and outstanding outside shooting. They are second nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.22) and third in field-goal percentage (53.2), and the Gaels gave Stanford a glimpse of their efficiency when they collected 21 assists on 27 made field goals in a 66-51 victory at Stanford on Nov. 30.

"It's every coach's dream to have that many shooters and that many great passers on the floor at the same time," Stanford coach Jerod Haase said after the game. "It's hard to guard it all."

Jock Landale, the Gaels' 6-foot-11 center, leads the team in scoring (19.7 points per game), shooting percentage (76.1) and rebounding (9.0), but the star against Stanford was Calvin Hermanson, who scored a career-high 25 points while hitting 7 of 9 from 3-point range. Hermanson also did an outstanding defensive job on Stanford's Dorian Pickens, who was limited to two points.

Both Gaels' starting guards were all-conference selections last season and are among the nation's leaders in assists this year. Emmett Naar is averaging 7.7 assists after collecting eight against Stanford, and Joe Rahon averages 6.2 assists and had six assists against the Cardinal.

The fast start prompted coach Randy Bennett to admit that this might be his best team in his 16 seasons at Saint Mary's.

"It's up there. We'll see," he said. "Potentially, yeah. Potentially we could be."

Aiding the Gaels is the fact that forward Dane Pineau, whose back problems caused him to miss one game and play sparingly in three others, seems to be back at full strength. He started the second half of the game against Stanford, and may be in the starting lineup for the first time this season against Arlington.
