Tuesday’s six-pack

— Rob Gronkowski may have punctured a lung during Sunday night’s game with Seattle.

— Former UNC/Miami coach Butch Davis will be the next football coach at FIU.

— Bears WR Alshon Jeffrey gets a 4-game suspension for PED’s.

— Michigan QB Wilton Speight may be out for the year with a broken collarbone.

— Fresno State hired former Cal/CFL coach Jeff Tedford as its new coach; he was Aaron Rodgers’ college coach.

— Rams’ DE Robert Quinn checked himself into a hospital with a non-football illness; apparently the situation looks promising. Obviously, we pray that this situation is resolved quickly so Robert can have a long and healthy life.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) OK, so I go get Chinese take-out for lunch the other day; get the same exact thing every time (chicken fried rice, Dr Pepper) and the same woman takes my order every time. While I wait for the food, she goes outside to her car and gets something out of it.

The woman owns a brand-new, fully loaded white Mercedes SUV, a beautiful car; she works the counter at a take-out place in a strip ****, and she drives a bleepin’ Mercedes. What a country.

12) There have been three NFL QB’s this year who threw 4+ INTs in the 4th quarter of a game:

— Carson Palmer against Buffalo
— Ryan Fitzpatrick against the Chiefs
— Philip Rivers vs Miami two days ago

From 2012-2015, this didn’t happen. Not once.

11) Credit to Pete Carroll for going for two points after Seahawks went up 24-17 with about 4:00 left in Sunday night’s game; if they make it (they didn’t), Seattle is up nine points and game is almost in the bag. If they don’t make it, he still has a 7-point lead to protect.

Only other coach I’ve seen do this is the guy who coaches the Minnesota Gophers in college; he didn’t make it either, but his team also protected the lead and won the game.

10) I looked at my TV around 2:00 Sunday and the screen says: Tennessee 35, Green Bay 10 in the second quarter and I’m like, that makes no sense. Packers’ pass defense was terrible. Not like Marcus Mariota is Dan Fouts or anything.

9) I quoted this stat at the beginning of the NFL season and I’m doing it again:

The Jets’ last five coaches, in the first year with the Jets: 48-32, all either 9-7 or 10-6.

The Jets’ last five coaches, after the first year: 82-104.

I have no explanation for this.

8) Yale (+13) 98, Washington 90— Yale’s best player is out for the year, but they won this game anyway. On the road- they took 34 foul shots in a road game.

College basketball in November is wild, crazy- last year Western Illinois won at Wisconsin- the Leathernecks wound up 10-17, Badgers won two games in the NCAAs.

7) A’s traded 3B Danny Valencia to Seattle over the weekend for a minor leaguer; Valencia hit 17 HRs with a .346 OB% LY but he is 32, arbitration-eligible. so the A’s told him to take a hike, which is bad news for A’s fans (like me) but good news for Ryan Healy’s fantasy owners (like me). Young Healy stood up well in his first major league action last summer.

6) Teams ranked #2, #3 and #4 in college football all lost Saturday, first time that happened on the same day since 1985.

5) There no ugly wins. Ever. None. Bupkus.

4) In their last three games, Carolina Panthers have been outscored 40-12 in the second half.

3) President of the United States makes $400,000 a year; the minimum salary in the major leagues is $507,500.

2) I’ve said this before in this space, going back a couple years, so this is in no way a reaction to last week’s elections, but I’m adamant about this: “The person who gets the most votes should win the election.” The Electoral College should be done away with.

All men were created equal, remember that? One person, one vote and all that…….

1) Speaking of which, Oceanside, CA voters re-elected City Treasurer Gary Ernst to his post last week, but there is one small problem.

Mr Ernst passed away in September; he won the election by 6% anyway.

Tuesday’s games– not a lot of info early on. I’m giving you what I have.

Dayton pummeled Alabama 80-48 at home LY, holding Crimson Tide to 29.8% from floor- they led by 16 at half. Flyers beat Austin Peay by 28 in their opener; Flyers have four starters back from 25-8 team. Avery Johnson is in his 2nd year at Alabama; he’s upgraded the talent level from LY, but they’re still a work in progress. Bama beat Coastal Carolina by 17 in their opener. A-14 teams are 5-4 in last nine games vs SEC (4-5 vs spread). SEC teams are 5-6 vs spread so far this season; A-14 teams are 6-9.

Oregon shot 60% inside arc in 74-67 home win over Baylor LY; Ducks beat Army by 14 in their opener. Oregon has four starters back from a 31-7 team LY, but Brooks has been banged up. Baylor made 10-26 on arc in its 76-61 win over Oral Roberts in their opener; Bears lost three starters from a 22-12 team that got upset in first round of NCAAs by Yale last spring. Big X teams are 7-4 in last 11 games vs Pac-12 (6-5 vs spread). Pac-12 teams are 8-5 vs spread so far this season; Big 14 teams are 6-6.

Indiana State won four of last five games with Ball State, losing 70-63 in last visit here; they beat Cardinals 73-61 at home LY. Sycamores brought in a freshman PG to run things after they were 15-17 LY, 8-10 in the MVC. Ball State has four starters back from LY’s 21-14 team that was Cardinals’ first postseason tourney team since 2002- they jumped 130 points in RPI LY. Wisconsin has its whole team back from LY’s 22-13 team that made Sweet 16 in NCAAs after they changed coaches in December. Badgers whacked Central Arkansas by 32 in their opener (34-22 at half). Creighton has four starters back from a 20-15 team that lost in NIT quarterfinals; Bluejays beat UMKC 89-82 in their opener- they were up by 28 with 13:09 left, let Kangaroos back in the game. Big East teams are 11-9 in last 20 games vs Big East teams (10-10 vs spread). Big 14 teams are 6-6 vs spread so far this season. Big East teams are 5-0.

Stanford was in China four days ago, beating Harvard by 10; Cardinal was 29-43 on line, was just 1-6 on arc. Cal-Northridge lost 102-87 at UCLA Sunday; Matadors were up by a hoop at the half. CSUN has three starters back from LY and finally has decent depth in Year 4 for coach Theus. Stanford has four starters back from a 15-15 team; they’ve got a new coach. Pac-12 teams are 11-8 vs spread in last 19 games vs Big West teams. Big West teams are 4-8 vs spread this season, 1-4 as road underdogs. Pac-12 teams are 8-4.

Michigan State raced out to 17-2 lead, then lost 65-63 to Arizona on Pearl Harbor in their opener Friday; Spartans were outscored 20-5 on foul line, made just 8-25 on arc. MSU is younger than usual; they lost three starters from LY, but has very talented freshmen. Kentucky won its first two games by 23-24 over SF Austin/Canisius; Wildcats are obviously young/talented; they forced turnovers on 30.3% of opponents’ possessions. Big 14 teams are 8-1 (5-3-1 vs spread) in last nine games vs SEC squads. Big 14 teams are 6-6 vs spread; SEC teams are 5-7. This is in NYC; lot of travel for Michigan State- they played in Hawai’i Friday night.

Kansas was also in Hawai’i Friday, losing 103-99 in OT to Indiana in foulfest where 74 Its were taken; Indiana made 15-31 on arc in game Jayhawks led by 9 early in second half. Kansas PG Mason is indispensable; he played all 40:00, got to line 15 times himself vs Hoosiers. Duke is a loaded team that has injury issues early one; Blue Devils whacked Marist/Grand Canyon to start their season- this is obviously a big jump in class. Little unusual that this is Iona’s opener; they’re off to Reno to play Reno after this game. Florida State beat a cupcake by 21 in their opener; Seminoles are deep, athletic but they’ve got to play better defense than they did LY. FSU has had two excellent recruiting classes in a row. Belmont, Vanderbilt are both in Nashville but are playing for first time in six years; Bruins are the smaller school, have to be more excited about this. Vandy got whacked by 24 by Marquette in its opener; Commodores turned ball over 19 times, have new coach- it takes time sometimes to adjust. Murray State beat Middle Tenneseee by 19-11 points the last two years. Racers beat Illinois State 73-70 in their opener, a solid win- Murray forced 18 turnovers, was 12-33 on arc- they’ve got three starters back from a disappointing 17-14 team. Middle Tennessee wound up making NCAAs LY and upsetting Michigan State in first round; Blue Raiders played a stiff in their first game this year- they’ve got three starters back from that 25-10 team. C-USA teams are 8-6 in last 14 games vs OVC teams (5-8-1 vs spread). OVC teams are 7-7 vs spread; C-USA teams are 8-1.

Weber State actually played Antelope Valley (who??) in their opener; Wildcats have four starters back from a 26-9 team that lost by 18 to Xavier in NCAAs LY- they’re expected to contend for another Big Sky title. Pepperdine beat Cal Poly by 9 in its opener; Waves were just 11-21 on foul line- they’ve got three starters back from an 18-14 team. Pepperdine is struggling to break into WCC’s top 3; hard to do. WCC teams are 8-7 in last 15 games vs Big Sky foes (9-6 vs spread). Big Sky teams are 7-7 vs spread this week; WCC teams are 6-8.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) Josh Hart scored 24 points and Darryl Reynolds added 12 to lead No. 3 Villanova to a 79-76 victory over No. 15 Purdue on Monday night.

The Wildcats (2-0) have won eight straight games, including the six NCAA Tournament victories that gave them the national title last season. They also snapped the Boilermakers' nine-game home winning streak and became only the second team to beat Matt Painter in November since he became Purdue's coach in 2006-07.

Isaac Haas scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half for the Boilermakers (1-1). Caleb Swanigan had 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

CINCINNATI (AP) - J.P. Macura scored 18 points and Xavier took advantage of 38 personal fouls by Buffalo.

The Musketeers (2-0) quickly opened a double-digit lead and got the balance back in their offense after relying on career highs for points by Trevon Bluiett and Edmond Sumner in their opening 84-81 win over Lehigh. Bluiett and Sumner had 13 points apiece in this one.

Nick Perkins led the Bulls (1-1) with 15 points. They shot only 31 percent from the field.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - V.J. King scored 17 points and Deng Adel added 16, including eight during Louisville's 10-0 run to close the first half against William & Mary.

Louisville (2-0) initially struggled against the Tribe's up-tempo style, going scoreless for 3:06 and allowing William & Mary to pull to 34-31 with 2:13 remaining in the first half. Adel took charge over the final 1:31 with five free throws and a 3-pointer during the spurt that gave the Cardinals some space entering the break.

Quentin Snider and Jaylen Johnson each added 13 points for Louisville, which held William & Mary (1-1) to 23 percent shooting in the second half and 31 percent overall.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Jordan Mathews scored 17 points and Gonzaga held San Diego State to 28 percent shooting.

Zach Collins added 15 points and Nigel Williams-Goss 10 for Gonzaga (2-0) in the ESPN College Hoops Marathon game.

Trey Kell and Jeremy Hemsley each had 14 points for San Diego State (1-1).

San Diego State shot 16 of 56 and went long periods without a basket. The Aztecs made only five of their first 21 attempts and fell behind 23-12.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Nathan Adrian had 15 points and 14 rebounds for his first career double-double, helping West Virginia cruise past Mississippi Valley State.

The Mountaineers (2-0) were sluggish at first, but Adrian and Jevon Carter fueled a 17-0 run that put West Virginia ahead 21-5 at the first media timeout.

West Virginia shot 72.7 percent from the free throw line and scored 34 points off 26 turnovers.

Teyvon Myers and Lamont West scored 12 points apiece for West Virginia.

Marcus Romain had 13 points for the Delta Devils (0-2).

AMES, Iowa (AP) - Monte Morris scored 18 points and Matt Thomas added 13 as Iowa State beat Mount St. Mary's.

Deonte Burton had 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Cyclones (2-0), who have won their first two games by an average of 30 points.

Mount St. Mary's (0-2) got within 10 early in the second half, but six Cyclones scored during a 15-1 run that put the game out of reach.

Elijah Long, the brother of Iowa State's Naz Mitrou-Long, had 19 points to lead the Mountaineers.

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) - E.C. Matthews scored 22 points and Hassan Martin had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead Rhode Island over Marist in the Hall of Fame Tipoff Tournament.

Kuran Iverson and Jared Terrell scored 14 apiece for the Rams (2-0), making their first appearance in The Associated Press Top 25 since 2007-08.

Khallid Hart scored 19 points and Brian Parker had 18 for Marist (0-2). URI shot 57 percent from 3-point range and outrebounded the Red Foxes 43-21.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Tevin Mack returned from a one-game suspension with 14 points as Texas used a big second half to roll over Louisiana-Monroe.

The Longhorns were back to full strength with the return of Mack and guard Kerwin Roach Jr., giving Texas (2-0) some of the muscle, speed and depth it lacked in a sloppy season-opening win over Incarnate Word.

Louisiana-Monroe (1-1) cut Texas' lead to 46-40 before the Longhorns responded with a 16-4 run. Kendal Yancey scored five straight points, made a 3-pointer and threw down a dunk in transition that made it 62-44 with just under 8 minutes left.

Mack and Roach sat out the first game because of an offseason rules violation. Neither player started Monday night, but both were on the court within minutes after the opening tip. Mack made four 3-pointers and Roach had 11 points and two assists.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jacob Evans III had nine points during a run that put Cincinnati in control midway through the second half, and the Bearcats overcame cold shooting and a sloppy start to beat Albany.

Evans' 3-pointer started a 13-2 spurt that allowed the Bearcats (2-0) to finally shake loose. They went only 5 of 21 from beyond the arc, but Evans finished with 19 points.

David Nichols scored 13 points for Albany (1-1), which self-destructed with 22 turnovers.

Cincinnati outscored Albany 40-18 over the final 15 minutes.

Wednesday’s six-pack

— Kentucky 69, Michigan State 48— Spartans start out 0-2.

— Baylor 66, Oregon 49— Ducks’ best player didn’t play.

— Indiana State 80, Ball State 74 OT— Good win for Larry Bird’s alma mater

— Dayton 77, Alabama 72— Crimson Tide is lot better than they were last year.

— South Carolina 70, Monmouth 69 OT— Will games like this serve the Hawks well at MAAC tourney in March?

— George Washington 77, Siena 75— Rough day/night for the MAAC, going 1-6, with only win against Dartmouth.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

13) Jared Goff gets his long-awaited first start for the Rams this week against the Dolphins. LA scored one TD on its last 32 drives, so the bar has been set low for improvement over his predecessor.

12) 30 years ago today was November 16, 1986, Jim Everett’s debut with the Rams. He didn’t start, but rallied the Rams back from down 13-0 to lead New England 28-16, but the day didn’t have a happy ending. Patriots scored on a Hail Mary on the last play of the game to win 30-28.

I hope this Sunday has a happier ending.

11) Trivia: Steve Dils started that ’86 game at QB for the Rams, one of only nine games he started for LA.

10) ESPN’s college basketball marathon was last couple nights; very difficult to keep a normal sleep schedule this week. The best games were oddly enough, the 4:15am/6:30am games, from Hawai’i and Hartford.

Long time ago, maybe 25 years ago, friend of mine and I used to joke that “….if ESPN wanted teams to play at 3am, they would”, then it turned out to be true, for at least one night a year.

9) Northeastern 64, UConn 61— Huskies are 0-2 for first time since 1968.

8) New Hampshire 57, Temple 52— Owls lost two players to injuries during the summer, are down this year, but losing to New Hampshire is especially ominous.

7) Gonzaga 69, San Diego State 48— Been long time since the Aztecs got spanked like this; they’ve got lot of injuries right now, and maybe Gonzaga is really good, but this was a bad game.

6) Underdogs were 9-3 vs spread in NFL Sunday, making it a very good day for Las Vegas sportsbooks. Public bets favorites and with eight underdogs winning SU, they had a rough day Sunday.

5) Seattle-New England game on NBC Sunday night was highest-rated Week 10 game since 1998.

4) Giants’ six wins are by a total of 21 points; they’re 3-1 this year in games decided by 3 or less points, after being 2-10 in such games from 2012-15.

3) Minnesota Vikings cut kicker Blair Walsh, who missed eight kicks this year and also a big kick in their playoff loss to the Seahawks last year. He is expected to be replaced by former Redskins’ kicker Kai Forbath.

2) Maryland 76, Georgetown 75— Epic gag job by Hoyas, who led by 5 with 0:20 left. Big win for Mark Turgeon; I saw their first game against American and they didn’t look that good. This was an intense game.

1) Bengals/Falcons are only NFL teams who’ve started the same five offensive linemen in every game this season.
