  • Preview: Nittany Lions (11-9) at Badgers (16-3)
    Date: January 24, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

MADISON, Wis. -- Starters for No. 15 Wisconsin had a lighter practice one day after the Badgers notched an exciting and exhausting 78-76 overtime win on Saturday at Minnesota.

Badgers coach Greg Gard gave reserves the opportunity to log additional preparation time despite a quick turnaround as Wisconsin (16-3, 5-1 Big Ten Conference) hosts Penn State (11-9, 3-4) on Tuesday night at the Kohl Center.

"We took that group of 12 non-starters and did a 10-minute scrimmage last night," Gard said about Sunday practice. "It was beneficial for both. Gave the heavy-minute guys some rest and continued to give the others more experience."

Sophomore forward Ethan Happ collected co-Big Ten Player of the Week honors on Monday, in large part due to his effort at Minnesota. Happ posted career highs of 28 points and five blocks. He also contributed 12 rebounds and matched a career high with six assists.

In two victories last week, Happ averaged 19.5 points, nine rebounds and 4.5 assists. Senior guard Bronson Koenig, who drilled a go-ahead 3-pointer with less than a minute to go in regulation against the Gophers, paces the Badgers in scoring at 14.3 points per game.

The Wisconsin program claims 17 consecutive victories against Penn State, but Gard said the current Nittany Lions corps is loaded with young talent and a couple veterans. He's familiar with freshman guard Tony Carr and freshman forward Lamar Stevens from the AAU basketball circuit.

The Nittany Lions lost two Big Ten games by three points (at Indiana, 78-75 and at Michigan, 72-69) during the first part of the league season. Penn State lost three of its last five games, but secured a 52-50 home win over Minnesota on Jan. 14.

In the Nittany Lions' most recent setback this past Saturday, they got pounded 77-52 at then-No. 21 Purdue.

Carr and Stevens, averaging 11.6 and 11.4 points per game, respectively, in their first collegiate seasons, played their prep careers together at Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia. Carr leads the Nittany Lions with 3.6 assists per game.

Junior guard Shep Garner paces the team in scoring with 12.3 points per game and redshirt freshman forward Mike Watkins also provides valuable contributions with 9.8 points and 8.6 rebounds.

"In the past they've always depended on one guy to score 25, 30 points, and now they've got five guys that almost average double figures, so, they disburse that (offense) and share the ball pretty well," Gard said.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin senior forward Vitto Brown is improving every day after suffering a right leg and ankle injury last week in the second half of the Badgers' win against Michigan.

After sitting out practice leading up to the Minnesota game, Gard expected Brown to be sidelined but the starter was given the green light on Saturday after working with trainers. Brown had a lighter workload since the Badgers relied on a smaller lineup for portions of the game at Minnesota, and scored seven points in 17 minutes.

"I thought he would be somewhat limited but I was more concerned with changing direction in transition, getting up and down the floor and anything, maybe, in the half court," Gard said. "He stayed within himself and did a good job there."

        • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

          — Ticket breakdown for the Super Bowl: NFL gets 25.2% of tickets, Patriots/Falcons 17.5% each, Texans 5%, other 29 teams 1.2% each.

          — Houston’s Clint Capela has scored 90.9% of his points in the paint this year, highest percentage of any player in the NBA this year.

          — 11 of the last 12 Super Bowl winners wore white jerseys in the game.

          — If Joel Embiid didn’t play last night, why does he have to rest tonight? What exactly is he resting from?

          — From Travis Branham: the last six years, 147 of 600 top 100 basketball prospects have transferred colleges; of those 147, only 66 transferred closer to home.

          — Sonny Perdue, who has been nominated for Agriculture Secretary, had a bit part in the movie We Are Marshall, playing a football coach for East Carolina.

          **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Quotes, tweets, other stuff…….

          13) Tweet of the Day #1, from ESPN’s Seth Greenberg: “I seriously feel it is not in (Grayson) Allen’s best interest to play the remainder of the season. He surely is not himself and seems distracted!”

Grayson Allen isn’t playing well; not sure how sitting out would help anyone, but that was Seth Greenberg’s opinion and he was a D-I coach for a long time, so I respect that.

          12) Tweet of the Day #2, from Evan Longoria on the Rays’ trade Monday: “I’m surprised and upset at losing a player, clubhouse presence and friend like Logan (Forsythe). He’s a rare player’’

What he means is, “I need some protection in the damn lineup or I’ll never see another fastball.”

          11) Tweet of the Day, #3, from MGM Resorts sports book hub manager Jeff Stoneback, talking about the Super Bowl spread: ”It would take a minimum of a half-a-million (dollars) for us to move off 3, but we’ve got house players who can do it with one wager.”

          10) Quote of the Day, #2: “Get it to a shooter!!! Instead, he got it to Solomon Hill”
New Orleans Pelicans TV guy Joel Meyers, at end of the Pelicans’ upset of Cleveland Monday night. Apparently Meyers doesn’t think much of Hill’s shooting (he made 1 of 2, Pelicans won)

          9) Quote of the Day, #3: “Them skeezers ain’t going to be out for the bad teams.” Charles Barkley, on TNT Monday night, talking about why good teams may struggle on the road in certain cities, like Miami, New Orleans, New York and Los Angeles. Party cities.

The exact definition of “skeezers” wasn’t given, but apparently whoever they are, they don’t like to party with players from non-contending teams.

          8) Quote of the Day, #4— “Seriously, why are we showing the Knicks?”
Barkley again, complaining (again) that the Knicks are on a TNT game

          7) Quote of the Day, #5— “It’s like when you don’t have bodies. It’s tough. The bleeping grind of the regular season. We’re a top-heavy team. We have a top-heavy team. We top-heavy as shit. It’s me, [Kyrie Irving], [Kevin Love]. It’s top-heavy.”

“We need a bleeping playmaker. I’m not saying you can just go find one, like you can go outside and see trees. I didn’t say that.”
Lebron James after the Cavaliers lost in New Orleans

          6) By whatever metric ESPN uses, Oklahoma has played the toughest basketball schedule in the country this season; they’re a very young team, so thats a bad combination.

          5) Troy Aikman told a story Sunday about how Dallas center Mark Stepnoski once tore up his knee during a game, but he stayed in the game for five more plays before coming out and he wound up needing a total knee reconstruction. Football players are tough.

          4) Was surprised Sunday that with 12:53 left in the game and Green Bay driving, Joe Buck made an Al Michaels-like reference to the over/under in the game. Never heard him do that before. People who bet the over can thank Aaron Rodgers’ competitive drive for cashing their bets.

          3) Cleveland Cavaliers are 3-5 in their last eight games, all against Western Conference clubs. Not only do the Cavaliers need another point guard, they need to get back to playing the weaker Eastern Conference teams.

          2) I wonder if Shaka Smart regrets leaving VCU? Other than the money, of course, but Texas doesn’t play anything like his VCU teams play— he could out-recruit teams in the A-14, but he can’t in the Big X and the people in Austin ain’t going to be happy for much longer with the lousy record the Longhorns have this season.

VCU could be like Gonzaga is out west and he would still be making over $1M a year, winning all the while. The Big X doesn’t have any bad teams, but somebody still has to finish last.

1— February 11 they’re going to have a TV show that will publicize who the top 16 seeds in the NCAA tournament would be if the season ended then. It doesn’t end then, so the show is irrelevant, but it’ll get people talking more about college basketball, which is a good thing.

                  • Wednesday's Tip Sheet
                    January 25, 2017

                    **Texas Tech at Baylor**

-- As of early this morning, most betting shops had Baylor (18-1 straight up, 9-5 against the spread) listed as a 10.5-point home favorite for this Big 12 showdown in Waco. Scott Drew’s team will be trying to pull into a first-place tie with Kansas atop the conference standings. Like the Bears in their lone league loss, the Jayhawks were smashed at West Virginia last night.

-- Baylor is unbeaten in 11 home games with a 3-4 spread record. The Bears have been double-digit home ‘chalk’ four times, limping to a 1-3 spread record.

-- Since taking its only of the year at WVU, Baylor has won three in a row while going 2-1 ATS. Drew’s team won 62-53 Saturday at TCU as a 2.5-point road favorite. The Bears’ streak of three straight ‘overs’ was halted when the 115 combined points never threatened the 135-point total. Manu Lecomte led the way with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists. Johnathan Motley produced 15 points and eight boards, while Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. was also in double figures with 11 points. Baylor forced the Horned Frogs to shoot at just a 29.3 percent clip from the field.

-- Baylor might be fifth in the Associated Press’s poll, but it is No. 1 in the RPI Rankings. The Bears are a remarkable 9-1 against RPI Top-50 foes, including home scalps of Oregon, Xavier, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State. The Ducks and Musketeers lost by double-digits at the Ferrell Center. Baylor has neutral-court victories over Michigan State, VCU and Louisville, in addition to wins at Kansas State and at TCU.

-- Motley, a senior power forward, is averaging 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Lecomte (12.2 PPG) has a team-best 83 assists compared to 42 turnovers and is draining 3-balls at a 39.3 percent rate. Al Freeman (10.9 PPG) is making 40.0 percent of his 3’s.

-- Texas Tech (14-5 SU, 7-8 ATS) has dropped three of four road games both SU and ATS this season. The Red Raiders picked up their lone road win at Richmond.

-- Texas Tech was favored in every non-conference game this season. Chris Beard’s first team in Lubbock has been an underdog four times, going 1-3 both SU and ATS. His squad is in its second-biggest underdog situation of the year against the Bears. The Red Raiders lost 85-68 at Kansas as 11.5-point ‘dogs in their only other spot as double-digit puppies.

-- Texas Tech fell to 3-4 in Big 12 action with Saturday’s 83-64 loss to Oklahoma St. as a 6.5-point home favorite. The Cowboys buried 11-of-16 from downtown (68.8%) in a blistering shooting display. Phil Forte splashed the nets at a 7-for-8 clip from behind the line. Keenan Evans had a team-best 15 points in the losing effort. Devon Thomas and Zach Smith chipped in 11 points apiece. The Red Raiders were destroyed 29-17 on the boards.

-- Smith (13.1 PPG) is averaging team-highs in rebounding (7.5 RPG), field-goal percentage (58.3%) and blocked shots (1.6 BPG). Evans (14.4) is Texas Tech’s leading scorer, shooting at the following percentages from the field, 3-point land and at the free-throw line, respectively: 49.2%, 47.8% and 80.6%.

-- Texas Tech runs efficient offense, shooting 49.9% from the field to rank seventh in the country.

-- Baylor is ranked seventh in the nation in scoring defense (60.4 PPG), eighth in field-goal-percentage defense (38.0%) and ninth in defensive rebounding (26.8 RPG).

-- The ‘over’ is 9-6 overall for the Red Raiders, 6-3 in their home games.

-- The ‘under’ is 8-5-1 overall for Baylor, 4-3 in its home outings.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN News.

                    ** UCLA at USC**

-- As of early this morning, most books had UCLA (19-2 SU, 12-9 ATS) installed as a six-point road favorite. The Bruins are 4-1 SU and 2-3 ATS in their five previous road trips.

-- Steve Alford’s team fell 1.5 games behind the Pac-12 co-leaders, Arizona and Oregon, with Saturday’s 96-85 loss to Arizona as a 5.5-point home favorite. Lonzo Ball had 24 points, six rebounds, two steals and eight assists compared to one turnover in the losing effort. Bryce Alford had 15 points on 4-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc, while Isaac Hamilton contributed 14 points, four boards and four assists.

-- UCLA is mired in a 2-7-1 ATS slump. The Bruins’ only other defeat came on Dec. 28 when they lost 89-87 at Oregon as 1.5-point road ‘chalk.’

-- Alford (17.2) leads UCLA in scoring and is shooting at a 46.4 percent clip from downtown. T.J. Leaf, a 6’10” freshman forward, is averaging 16.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.1 blocked shots per game. Leaf is making 63.6 percent of his attempts from the floor and 48.8 percent from 3-point land. He has been a model of consistently, scoring in double figures ever game and producing nine double-doubles. Ball (14.9 PPG) is the catalyst that makes the Bruins go. The true freshman PG has been every bit the 5-star player that he was advertised to be. Ball (8.2 APG, 5.6 RPG 1.8 SPG) not only stuffs the stat sheet, but he’s making 54.2 percent of his shots and has a 172/48 assists-to-turnovers ratio.

-- UCLA is ranked eighth in the AP and No. 23 in the RPI. The Bruins are 2-2 against the RPI Top 50, but they have eight Top-100 wins, including a 97-92 win at Kentucky. Alford’s team also has neutral-court victories over Nebraska, Ohio State, and Texas A&M.

-- USC (17-4 SU, 9-11 ATS) is in sixth place in the Pac-12 with a 4-4 league record. The Trojans are 10-2 SU and 5-6 ATS at home this year. They’re currently on a 2-10 ATS slide.

-- USC had lost four of its last six games until edging Arizona St. 82-79 on Sunday as an 8.5-point home favorite. Elijah Stewart scored 29 points before fouling out, draining 7-of-13 from 3-point land. Jordan McLaughlin add3ed 18 points and eight assists, while Jonah Matthews finished with 14 points. Nick Rakocevic had 11 points and eight boards.

-- McLaughlin (14.1 PPG) and Stewart (14.1 PPG) share the lead for USC in scoring, with McLaughlin dishing out 5.1 APG. Chimezie Metu, a sophomore ‘big,’ is averaging 13.6 points and 7.5 RPG. Metu has a team-best 35 rejections.

-- USC is still playing without sophomore stretch-4 Bennie Boatwright, who hasn’t played since Nov. 30 after leaving a win at San Diego three minutes into the game with an MCL sprain. The Trojans remain hopeful that Boatwright can return at some point in early February. He was scoring at a 13.5 clip in their first four games before going down against the Toreros.

-- Alford and USC fourth-year head coach Andy Enfield both took over their respective jobs at these rival schools at the same time, going into the 2013-2014 campaign. The first five meetings went to UCLA by double-digit margins. Since then, however, the Trojans have won three in a row over the Bruins by margins of 14, 19 and 24. USC covered in all three wins last year, including a 95-71 pimpslap at the Pac-12 Tournament.

-- The ‘over’ is 7-1 in the last eight UCLA-USC head-to-head meetings. The favorite is 7-2 ATS in the last nine encounters.

-- The ‘under’ is 10-9-1 overall for the Trojans, 5-5-1 in their home contests.

-- The ‘over’ is 12-7-1 overall for the Bruins, 3-1-1 in their road assignments. They’ve watched the ‘over’ go 4-0-1 in their last five games regardless of the venue.

                    -- Tip-off is slated for 11:00 p.m. Eastern on Fox Sports 1.

                    **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Florida senior guard Canyon Barry is ‘questionable’ tonight at LSU after spraining his ankle in Saturday’s home loss to Vanderbilt. Barry has averaged 14.8 PPG in the last five games. The Gators are looking to avoid a third straight loss after opening SEC play with a 5-0 record. They were favored by 11.5 points early this morning. This game will come off the board at 9:00 p.m. Eastern with the SEC Network carrying the broadcast.

-- Georgia is a 5.5-point home favorite for tonight’s SEC showdown vs. Alabama at Stegeman Coliseum. The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide will tip at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU. Mark Fox’s team committed five turnovers in its last six possessions to allow a late lead to get away in a one-point loss Saturday at Texas A&M. Those stats made the loss painful enough, but then the way the actual last few seconds played out made it even worse. Trailing by one, J.J. Frazier was dribbling around when the clock inexplicably stopped with more than five seconds remaining. Moments later, Frazier clearly looked at the clock and realized he had plenty of time. He subsequently passed inside to Yante Maten, who went up and was fouled. He would’ve been looking at two free-throw attempts, but some obscure rule states that in these sort of instances, the referees must use a stop watch to time how long the play should’ve taken. In doing so, they determined the game was over and UGA didn’t get the potential game-winning free throws. For a perennial bubble team, that’s a tough one to swallow. We’ll see how UGA responds vs. Avery Johnson’s team, which is coming off an embarrassing blowout loss Saturday at Auburn.

-- Marquette chipped away at a 15-point halftime deficit for the entire second half and then turned it on late to slip past Villanova, 74-72. The Golden Eagles won outright as five-point home underdogs, securing a +200 return for their money-line supporters (paid $200 on $100 bets). Katin Reinhardt, the lights-out 3-ball shooter who is a grad transfer from USC, made huge shots at crunch time in a 19-point effort. He hit 4-of-7 triples and handed out four assists. Luke Fischer added 15 points for the winners.

-- Purdue’s Caleb Swanigan scored 25 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lift Purdue to an 84-73 win over Michigan St. last night at Breslin Center in East Lansing. The Boilermakers took the cash as 1.5-point road favorites.

-- Tennessee held off Kentucky 82-80 as a 10.5-point home underdog last night at Thompson-Boling Arena, handing the Wildcats their first SEC loss of the year in the process. The Volunteers hooked up their money-line backers with a nice +450 return (paid $450 on $100 wagers). Robert Hubbs III led the way for UT with 25 points and seven rebounds. Admiral Schofield added 15 points and seven boards, while freshman Grant Williams produced 13 points, six rebounds, four blocked shots, three steals and six assists without a turnover.

-- With the win over UK, let’s consider how interesting Tennessee’s resume would be if it included wins at North Carolina and vs. Oregon at the Maui Classic. Remember, the Volunteers led nearly the entire game in Chapel Hill after racing out to leads of 30-15 and 44-36 at halftime. However, they eventually lost a 73-71 decision. UT also lost in overtime to the Ducks. Instead of being 11-9 overall and No. 60 in the RPI, the Vols would be 13-7 overall, 4-4 in the SEC with wins over UK, UNC and Oregon, which would likely leave them in the Top 30 of the RPI.

-- WVU beat Kansas for the fourth straight time at home last night, spanking KU by an 85-69 count as a four-point home ‘chalk.’

-- Tuesday wasn’t a good night for Kevin Stallings. The first-year Pitt head coach saw Louisville’s Donovan Mitchell score a career-high 29 points in U of L’s 106-51 win on the road. The Panthers, who lost their fifth straight game to fall to 1-6 in ACC action, suffered their worst defeat in more than a century. It was the school’s second-worst loss in the 111-year history of the program.

-- London Perrantes dropped 22 points at Joyce Center and shot Virginia to a monster 71-54 win at Notre Dame with a second-half barrage. The Cavaliers won outright in South Bend as 1.5-point road underdogs.

-- Oregon’s Dillon Brooks (13.4 PPG) is expected to be a game-time decision for Thursday’s game at Utah.

                    • Three of NCAA's top 4 lose on same night
                      January 25, 2017

It was not a good night to be at the top of the AP Top 25.

For the first time in five years, three of the top four teams in the poll lost on the same day.

No. 1 Villanova was beaten 74-72 at Marquette on Tuesday, No. 2 Kansas fell 85-69 at No. 18 West Virginia, and No. 4 Kentucky lost 82-80 at Tennessee.

That left No. 3 Gonzaga with a good chance to move up to No. 1 next week. The only undefeated team in Division I, the Zags (20-0) still face San Diego and Pepperdine this week.

It was on Jan. 21, 2012, that No. 1 Syracuse lost 67-58 to Notre Dame, No. 3 Baylor fell 89-88 to No. 5 Missouri and No. 4 Duke was beaten 76-73 by Florida State.

Kentucky was No. 2 that day and, after beating Alabama 77-71 on the night of upsets, the Wildcats ascended to No. 1.

Syracuse fell to third after the loss, Baylor dropped to sixth and Duke plunged to eighth.

On Tuesday, Marquette (14-6, 5-3 Big East) rallied from a 17-point deficit for the win over the Wildcats (19-2, 7-2).

It was the second time Marquette defeated a No. 1-ranked team. The Golden Eagles beat Kentucky in the 2003 Final Four.

Their fans partied at the Bradley Center in a court-storming frenzy, celebrating as if coach Al McGuire was still pacing the Marquette sideline.

''I don't even know what to say,'' said Katin Reinhardt, who made two free throws with 11.6 seconds to play. ''You dream of these types of moments.''

Villanova's Jay Wright, the coach of the defending national champions, said: ''You've got to put a whole 40 minutes together. Sometimes you get on the road and a team gets hot. If you don't finish the 40 minutes, they'll get you.''

West Virginia pulled away to a victory that snapped Kansas' 18-game winning streak.

Esa Ahmad scored a career-high 27 points for the Mountaineers (16-4, 5-3 Big 12), who broke a two-game losing streak that dropped them 11 spots in the AP Top 25.

Josh Jackson matched his season high with 22 points for Kansas (18-2, 7-1).

West Virginia limited its turnovers to eight and went 19 of 23 from the free throw line, making nine of its final 10.

''We did both of those things today,'' coach Bob Huggins said. ''And when we do, we're pretty good.''

Robert Hubbs III scored 25 points as Tennessee snapped Kentucky's seven-game winning streak.

Tennessee (11-9, 4-4 Southeastern Conference) beat Kentucky (17-3, 7-1) in Knoxville for the second straight season and earned its first victory over a top-five team since an 83-76 triumph over No. 3 Pittsburgh on Dec. 11, 2010.

''We just wanted to go out and make a statement,'' Hubbs said. ''I think we did that tonight.''

Kentucky coach John Calipari said: ''Tennessee was better than us tonight. They deserved to win the game. It would have been a shame if we'd made a 3 or something crazy and had won the game. ... From the start, they deserved to win

                      • Preview: Seminoles (18-2) at Yellow Jackets (11-8)
                        Date: January 25, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

Florida State has proven this season that it is more than just a football school. The Seminoles are 18-2 and ranked No. 6 in the nation, a perch that's higher than North Carolina, Duke, Virginia and Louisville.

Now the Seminoles get to take their act on the road to play pesky Georgia Tech (11-8, 3-4 ACC) on Wednesday at McCamish Pavilion.

"They're really good," Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner said. "They're a team that can make a Final Four run. They're deep, they're well coached and they've got pros on their team. We're going to have to be really good if we're going to have any opportunity to beat them."

FSU is another one of those high-level offensive teams that requires maximum effort and minimum mistakes from an outgunned Georgia Tech team. The Seminoles average 85.7 points, second in the ACC, and lead the conference with 49.8 percent field goal percentage.

"They're a high-level team," Pastner said. "They play a lot of guys and all the guys are able to play. I haven't seen all his teams, but I believe this is coach (Leonard) Hamilton's most talented team. They're really good."

FSU (6-1 ACC) is young, too. Sophomore Dwayne Bacon averages 17.4 points and is equally adept at driving to the basket and pulling up for a 3-pointer. He leads the team in free throws and 3-pointers. Freshman Jonathan Isaac averages 13.3 points and 7.8 rebounds and was named NCAA Player of the Week after posting back-to-back double-doubles in wins against Notre Dame and Louisville.

"I'm happy with where we are," FSU coach Leonard Hamilton said. "I'm glad the guys are making progress. But this is not the time to get a tuxedo and start taking any bows. It's time to roll your sleeves up and really go to work."

The series with Florida State has been lopsided in favor of the Seminoles. Georgia Tech won last year's game in Tallahassee to break a 10-game losing streak to FSU. The all-time series is tied 16-16.

If Georgia Tech is going to have a chance, they can't afford to miss close shots like it did in Saturday's 62-49 loss to Virginia. The game was closer than the final score; Georgia tech trailed 29-28 with 4:26 left in the first half but failed to score again before intermission, which Virginia led 35-28. That stretch included two turnovers and a missed layup.

"We've got to be able to score the ball and we missed a lot of layups," Pastner said. "It's been a point of contention for us. We've got to continue to get better at it, work at it and hope we put the ball in the basket in those situations."

Georgia Tech will also need a bounce-back game from Ben Lammers, who scored a season-low seven points against the Cavs. Lammers was just 3-for-12 from the floor, partly because of a good defensive effort from Virginia's Jack Salt and partly because he was just having an off night.

"He got some really good looks and we'll live with those every day," Pastner said. "If they go in, we've got a good chance to win the game. If they don't, it makes it really hard for us. We are severely limited offensively. If we have one or two guys that aren't at a high level, it becomes very hard for us to give ourselves a chance to win."

                        • Preview: Bluejays (18-2) at Hoyas (10-10)
                          Date: January 25, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- This is unchartered territory for No. 16 Creighton, which plays Wednesday in the nation's capital against struggling Georgetown.

It will be the second full game and first road test for the Bluejays without guard Maurice Watson, Jr., who was averaging 8.5 assists before he was injured against Xavier on Jan. 16.

Creighton won that game 72-67 but lost at home Saturday to Marquette as the Bluejays searched for a leader on the court down the stretch.

"It's probably where we missed Maurice the most," coach Greg McDermott told reporters after the game. "We just didn't have the voice there, nobody to turn to on the floor."

Watson tore the left ligament in his knee and his college career is over. He is from Philadelphia and played at Boston University of the Patriot League before transferring to Creighton (18-2, 5-2 Big East).

Creighton lost 102-94 to Marquette, which played one of its best games of the season and validated that performance with a 74-72 upset victory over No. 1 Villanova on Tuesday.

Watson was averaging 12.9 points per game and shooting nearly 51 percent from the field.

The Hoyas, meanwhile, have their own problems.

Georgetown (10-10, 1-6 Big East) is off to one of the worst starts in conference play in the history of the storied program.

The Hoyas are coming off a loss Sunday at Xavier even though graduate guard Rodney Pryor had 23 points against the Musketeers, who slipped to No. 22 in the AP poll this week. L.J. Peak is having a solid season for the Hoyas, but had very little help at times.

So what happened to the Hoyas?

"Fouling and rebounding, those two areas," coach John Thompson III told reporters after the loss in Cincinnati.

Georgetown showed it can stay with some of the top teams in the conference. But pulling out a win is another story.

The Hoyas lost 16 games in a row in the conference to teams other than DePaul and St. John's.

Georgetown lost six of its last eight games overall and the crowds have been thin of late at the Verizon Center in downtown Washington, which is also the home of the Washington Wizards of the NBA.

Creighton, even without Watson, has firepower.

The Bluejays top scorers are junior guard Marcus Foster (18.7 points per contest), freshman center Justin Patton (13.7) and sophomore guard Khyri Thomas (11.9).

Creighton is 5-0 on the road this season.

                          • Preview: Red Raiders (14-5) at Bears (18-1)
                            Date: January 25, 2017 8:00 PM EDT

WACO, Texas -- A couple of weeks ago, Texas Tech first-year coach Chris Beard said his team anticipated a one-possession game against No. 25 Kansas State.

He said that after the Red Raiders edged the Wildcats by a point in Lubbock, Texas.

On Tuesday, Baylor coach Scott Drew said the goal in Big 12 play is to try to have a chance to win a one-possession game.

Drew made that observation when asked about Texas Tech's 18-point victory last season in Waco.

"We know that right now in the Big 12, if you look at all the conferences, it has the highest percentage of games decided by one possession or less," Drew said. "If you play well, play hard it gives you a chance to have a one-possession game."

The trend of hard-fought, down-to-the-wire Big 12 contests could continue as the fifth-ranked Bears (18-1, 6-1 Big 12) host Texas Tech (14-5, 3-4) at 7 CT on Wednesday night.

Both Baylor and the Red Raiders made the NCAA Tournament last season, the first time that happened. For it to reoccur this season, Texas Tech will have to hold up its end.

Baylor, as Beard pointed out in his press conference on Monday, has its sights set on the Big 12 championship and a possible No. 1 seed come March.

The Red Raiders need to establish more consistency in conference play, especially on the road.

Texas Tech has a couple of sparkling wins this month as the Red Raiders defeated ranked opponents West Virginia and Kansas State in Lubbock.

Road games have been a different story, though, as Iowa State, Kansas and Oklahoma all fended off the Red Raiders on their respective home courts.

Then on Saturday, Oklahoma State notched its first Big 12 win this season by routing the Red Raiders in Lubbock. That loss changed Beard's tune from trying to get his team in contention for the conference title to trying to stay out of the cellar.

"We've shown that we're able to beat anybody on a given night, but we've also shown we can get beat by anybody," Beard said. "It gets back to the day-to-day grind. As disappointing as the last game was, you've got to get back to work and give yourself a chance in the next game."

It would seem that Texas Tech has a fighting chance in this road game after the Red Raiders won in Waco a year ago and battled the Bears to a three-point game the season before that. Texas Tech has returned many of the key players from those teams and will rely on experience to be a factor.

Baylor will attempt to change the script with prolific forward Johnathan Motley, who has elevated his game this season to lead the Bears in scoring at 15.7 points per game.

The X-factor for Baylor could be point guard Manu Lecomte, who made key plays in the closing minutes to help Baylor defeat TCU on Saturday. Lecomte, a junior transfer in his first season playing for Baylor, has helped the Bears play with a different, more resilient attitude than in past seasons.

Maybe that's why Baylor sophomore guard Jake Lindsey didn't seem overly worried about the Red Raiders' recent success on the Bears' home court.

"We're a different team this year, they're a different team," Lindsey said. "So you've kind of got to take it for what it is and look at every game like a new challenge."

                            • Preview: Bulldogs (17-3) at Pirates (13-6)
                              Date: January 25, 2017 8:30 PM EDT

NEWARK, N.J. -- St. John's coach Chris Mullin had just watched Seton Hall's Angel Delgado score 21 points and grab 20 rebounds in an 86-73 loss to the Pirates on Sunday. When asked about Delgado's performance, Mullin, a basketball Hall of Famer, responded quickly.

"He looked like Moses Malone today," he said. "He carves out space and keeps it. He's got good hands and takes his time. Anytime you get 21 points and grab 20 rebounds, you are doing a lot of good stuff. Very solid."

Delgado and Seton Hall (13-6, 3-4 Big East) will be gunning for their 11th consecutive home victory when No. 11 Butler (17-3, 6-2) visits the Prudential Center on Wednesday.

Butler and Seton Hall are meeting for the eighth time with all seven previous games coming since the Bulldogs joined the Big East prior to the 2013-14 season. Butler has won six of the seven match-ups, including all six in the regular season. Seton Hall's win came in the 2014 Big East Tournament. The Bulldogs have won four straight in the series.

Delgado, a 6-foot-9 junior from the Dominican Republic, became the first player to log a 20-20 game in Big East action since 2010 when Providence's Jamine Peterson dropped 29 and 20 on Rutgers. Delgado (12.4) ranks only behind Purdue's Caleb Swanigan (12.5) in rebounding in the country and is third in double-doubles with 14.

"He's our workhorse," Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said. "We gave him (Delgado) three days off after the Villanova game (a road loss on Jan. 16) because he's been logging so many minutes. He's been playing fantastic basketball, but when we played three games in six days it was a lot of minutes for him. I think (the time off) really helped him."

Butler has come back from 18-point and 20-point deficits, respectively, to post wins in their last two games. Marquette led Butler, 43-25, with 19:17 to play in the second half Jan. 16. DePaul led the Bulldogs, 25-5, with 12:52 remaining in the first half Saturday.

"DePaul played really well, and we were fortunate to win this one," said Butler coach Chris Holtmann. "We did some things to hurt ourselves, but DePaul had a lot to do with that. We had some unbelievable fan support today (as Butler had a large contingent of Chicagoland alumni at Allstate Arena). It's not easy to win on the road in this league, especially against a team that was as hungry as DePaul was today."

The No. 11 ranking represents the Bulldogs' highest ranking since they were No. 9 on Dec. 28, 2015. Their highest rank ever was No. 8 on Feb. 19, 2008.

Junior forward Kelan Martin is one of 19 players on the midseason watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy (player of the year) voted on by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. He's averaging 16.5 points.

The Butler guard scored 18 points Saturday in the overtime win over DePaul, including its final five points in the closing 24 seconds. He scored another 18 in the Marquette victory. Martin shot 56 percent in the two games.

                              • Preview: Gators (14-5) at Tigers (9-9)
                                Date: January 25, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

Florida is clinging to a Top 25 ranking despite back-to-back losses.

Coach Mike White is more concerned about the streak than the ranking as the No. 25 Gators head into an SEC game against LSU on Wednesday night in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, La.

"We're not a good enough team to think we've accomplished something because someone votes us into the 25," White told the Florida Times-Union. "We need to recommit and refocus at defending at the level that we are capable of."

On Saturday, Florida (14-5, 5-2) lost at home to Vanderbilt 68-66 after a second half in which the Commodores shot 56.5 percent from the field.

"We're not worried about offense at this moment," sophomore guard KeVaughn Allen said. "We're worried about defending."

Senior swingman Canyon Barry suffered a sprained ankle in practice Monday and White said he's "50-50" for the game against the Tigers.

Barry hasn't started a game, but he's one of the more valuable Gators. He's second on the team in scoring (12.4) and 3-point shooting (.311) and first in free-throw shooting (.867).

He had just six points against Vanderbilt, ending a streak of five consecutive games in which he had scored in double figures.

Florida is third in the SEC in fewest points allowed (66.6), but it's 10th in field-goal percentage defense (.428).

LSU (9-9 1-6) has similar concerns to those of Florida but to a greater degree.

The Tigers are also trying to end a losing streak, having lost their last five games. They're also trying to improve their defense, having allowed an average of 89 points per game during the losing streak. They allowed their highest total in SEC play in a 99-86 loss at Arkansas on Saturday.

A victory against the Gators would provide a much-needed boost to LSU.

"Florida was picked to finish at the top of the league along with Kentucky, so (a win) would be huge for our guys in a lot of ways," Tigers coach Johnny Jones told the school's official website. "That's our goal, to go out and show we're capable of competing, that we've improved, and showing we've gotten better.

"There's not a better place to hopefully be able to get that turned around then here at home against a team that we really think is well balanced ... They certainly pose a great challenge for us, one that we're going to have to make sure we step up and meet."

The Tigers got an encouraging offensive sign in the loss at Arkansas as freshman point guard Skylar Mays had a season-high 22 points and six assists. He averages 10.7 points and 3.7 assists.

"Not a lot of guys were hot last game so I just felt like I really wanted to win the game so I wanted to take a bit of the scoring role," Mays told NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune. "I felt like that would be what was needed from me for that particular game in order to give ourselves a chance to win."
