        • Friday's Tip Sheet
          April 7, 2017

Game of the Night – Heat at Raptors – 7:30 PM EST

These two squads played an exciting seven-game series in the second round of the playoffs last season as Toronto knocked out Miami to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. The Heat (38-40 SU, 46-31-1 ATS) are on the outside looking in for the eighth spot in the East after the Bulls and Pacers won on Thursday to pull one half-game ahead of Miami. Erik Spoelstra’s squad snapped a two-game skid by downing the Hornets on Wednesday, 112-99 as 2 ½-point road underdogs, led by Goran Dragic’s 33 points.

The Raptors (48-31 SU, 43-35-1 ATS) blew a 19-point lead in Tuesday’s 108-90 setback at Indiana, but Toronto pulled out a massive rally the next night in Detroit by erasing a 20-point deficit in a 105-102 triumph. Kyle Lowry returned from an 18-game absence with a wrist injury to score 27 points and dish out 10 assists for Toronto, who enters Friday’s action tied with Washington for the third seed in the East. With Wednesday’s victory, the Raptors improved to 9-2 SU and 7-4 ATS the last 11 contests, while sitting two games behind Boston atop the Atlantic division with three games remaining.

Toronto has taken two of three matchups from Miami this season, including a 101-84 triumph at American Airlines Arena on March 23 as four-point underdogs. All three meetings have finished UNDER the total, while the Heat have been limited to 87 points or fewer in both losses to the Raptors. Miami has lost in seven of the past eight visits to Air Canada Center with the only victory coming in overtime in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals last season.

          Stop Fooling Us

LeBron James can claim all he wants that the regular season doesn’t mean much, but his Cavaliers threw a knockout punch on the Celtics in Wednesday’s 114-91 blowout to grab a one-game advantage for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. After Boston lost at Atlanta last night, the Cavaliers built a 1 ½-game edge for home-court in the East with four games remaining. Cleveland has won four consecutive contests since a three-game skid, while starting a home-and-home set with Atlanta.

The Cavaliers host the unrested Hawks as Atlanta rebounded from a 2-9 stretch by routing Boston on Thursday. Since the All-Star break, the Hawks posted a dreadful 1-10 ATS record at Philips Arena prior to last night’s victory, while dropping six of its past seven road games. Mike Budenholzer’s squad has covered in five of seven opportunities as a road underdog since mid-February, while winning at Cleveland as 7 ½-point ‘dogs in November, 110-106.

          All Locked In

The Rockets wrapped up the third seed in the Western Conference after holding off the Nuggets on Wednesday, 110-104. Houston failed to cover for the fifth straight game, while Wednesday’s contest showcased the second-highest total of the season in the NBA at 240 ½ and easily finished UNDER. The Rockets host the reeling Pistons at Toyota Center as Houston edged Detroit at the Palace of Auburn Hills in November, 99-96.

Detroit is on its last playoff legs, sitting 3 ½ games out of eighth place in the East with four games remaining. The Pistons suffered their worst loss of the season from a morale standpoint by squandering a 20-point lead in Wednesday’s three-point defeat to the Raptors. Stan Van Gundy’s club owns a 2-10 SU and 3-9 ATS in the past 12 contests with the only victories coming against the Nets and Suns. Detroit has lost nine of its previous 10 games away from the Palace of Auburn Hills, while posting an 0-5 SU/ATS mark as an underdog of eight points or more this season.

          Sit Right Down

The top three playoff positions in the Western Conference are spoken for as San Antonio has clinched the Southwest division at 60-18 and is seeded second. So of course that means that head coach Gregg Popovich will pull the plug on several of his stars as the regular season winds down. The Spurs make the short trip to Dallas as Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge won’t play tonight for San Antonio. On Wednesday, the Spurs were tripped up by the Lakers as 13 ½-point home favorites, 102-95, although Leonard, Aldridge, Tony Parker, and Pau Gasol all played fewer than 20 minutes.

The Mavericks return home from a dreadful 1-4 road trip, punctuated by Wednesday’s 112-101 defeat to the Clippers. Dallas has lost four of its last five games at American Airlines Center, but has covered in all three matchups with San Antonio this season, including in a 105-101 upset of the Spurs as 12-point road ‘dogs in late January.

          Battle for Four

The Jazz and Clippers are fighting it out for home-court advantage in the first round as Utah owns a half-game edge over Los Angeles for the fourth seed. Utah faces Minnesota in a huge revenge spot after the Timberwolves embarrassed the Jazz last month in Salt Lake City, 107-80 as 6 ½-point underdogs. The Wolves play with no rest tonight after getting chased in the fourth quarter in Thursday’s 105-98 loss at Portland as the Blazers outscored Minnesota, 25-11 over the final 12 minutes.

Minnesota looks to improve on an 8-4-1 ATS record with no rest this season, while Utah has won seven consecutive home games since the blowout to the Wolves on March 1. The Jazz have covered four in a row in the favorite role, while winning five of the previous six matchups with Minnesota since January 2016.

          Head-to-Head Trends

-- The Knicks and Grizzlies last met in late October at Madison Square Garden as New York pulled out a 111-104 victory. New York travels to Memphis with no rest following Thursday’s three-point home loss to Washington as the Knicks have covered in seven of their last 10 games. In spite of that October defeat, the Grizzlies have captured eight of the past 10 meetings with the Knicks.

-- The Nuggets and Pelicans hook up for the second time in four days as Denver outlasted New Orleans on Tuesday, 134-131 to easily eclipse the OVER of 227. Another shootout is expected tonight at Pepsi Center as the road team has won in each of the three matchups this season with the Pelicans blowing out the Nuggets, 115-90 on March 26. Denver returns home from a 2-3 road swing as the Nuggets own a 5-3 record in its previous eight contests at Pepsi Center.

-- The Suns are playing out the string as Phoenix tries to snap a 13-game skid against Oklahoma City. The Thunder continues a four-game road swing following Wednesday’s 103-100 triumph at Memphis as OKC has won two of three matchups with Phoenix. The Suns won the previous meeting at home last month, 118-111 as five-point underdogs, snapping a six-game skid to the Thunder that dated back to 2015.

-- The Lakers and Kings meet for the final time this season at Staples Center as Los Angeles goes for the series split. Los Angeles captured the first matchup at Golden 1 Center in November, but the Kings have won each of the past two meetings. All three matchups have finished UNDER the total, while the Lakers have covered three straight games overall.

            • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Odds to win the Stanley Cup this spring:

              3-1— Chicago, Washington

              7-2— Minnesota

              5-1— Columbus

              8-1— San Jose, Montreal, Pittsburgh

              10-1— Edmonton

              16-1— Anaheim

              **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

              13) Steve Fisher retired as San Diego State’s coach Monday night, ending a 26-year career where he compiled a 495-288 record, winning the 1989 national title with Michigan, when he replaced Bill Frieder just before the NCAA tournament, after Frieder bolted for Arizona State.

Fisher later built San Diego State’s program up from practically nothing to one of the best programs in the west- he will be missed.

              12) Cubs raised their World Series championship banner last night; they’ve moved the bullpens to under the outfield bleachers, and put in 500 new, premium-priced seats down each foul line, where the bullpens used to be. Cubs beat the Dodgers 3-2 to win their home opener.

              11) What have you done for me lately?

NHL’s Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014, their only Cups in 52 years of existence, but they fired coach Daryl Sutter Monday, after six full seasons with the Kings- he won two of the last five Stanley Cups, but got canned- doubt he’ll be out of work long.

              10) Reminder; if you’re in Las Vegas and come to the SouthPoint Casino, bring a fleece or a light jacket- excellent place to watch sports, but a little cool in here.

              9) You meet people from all over the country here; was talking to a guy from Louisiana Sunday night— he told me one of the main reasons Ben Simmons chose to play basketball at LSU was that lot of the bigger-name schools wouldn’t OK a camera crew following Simmons around all the time so Showtime could do their infomercial/documentary on him.

Hard to figure out why LSU’s season went so far into the dumper that season.

              8) Then there was the conversation between two friends sitting behind me last night, while I was watching the Padres-Rockies game. These two guys were talking politics and apparently they hadn’t seen each other since last November’s election. It was a spirited discussion between two friends, but it got heated now and then- they didn’t agree on too much.

              7) Padres 5, Rockies 3— Wil Myers hit for the cycle, just the second Padre (Matt Kemp) ever to do that.

              6) Mets 4, Phillies 3— Teams carry so many pitchers these days, their benches are short; Mets were tied 2-2 in the 7th inning last night- they had go-ahead run on second with two out and a righty on the mound for the Phils.

Terry Collins had Michael Conforto in the on-deck circle, but if he uses Conforto there, Philly puts a lefty in, and Collins counters with Wilmer Flores. So he used Flores against the righty, preserving Conforto for later in the game (he never got in) if he needed him. Smart.

              5) Heat 124, Cavaliers 121— Miami stays alive in the playoff race, barely beating a Cleveland team playing without Lebron James/Kyrie Irving. Heat still needs the Pacers to lose a game to make the playoffs— Indiana beat the 76ers in Philly last night.

              4) Giants 4, Diamondbacks 1— Buster Posey got beaned in his first at-bat yesterday, was removed from the game as a precaution. Giants later scored three runs on a ground ball to the pitcher, something you rarely see, even in a Little League game.

              3) NFL announced the Saints-Dolphins game from London will be one of those hideous 9:30am ET kickoffs. Imagine working in a sports book here in Las Vegas, with a 6:30am kickoff? Oy.

              2) Active managers who will be in the Hall of Fame someday: Bruce Bochy, Joe Maddon and Terry Francona. Cubs’ GM Theo Epstein will also get in.

1— Lawson brothers bolted Memphis’ basketball team last week; four of their teammates have since followed them out of town, gutting the Tigers’ roster- they’re basically an expansion team right now, a total rebuild.

Lawsons surfaced Monday at Kansas; we’ll see how that goes.

I know this; recruiting is a cut-throat business and it never seems to end.

                      • Final day of NBA season will decide some seeds, matchups
                        April 11, 2017

There will be final-night intrigue in the NBA.

The two remaining playoff berths will be decided, along with the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference and the site for Game 1 of the series that starts this weekend between the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Clippers.

Most individual stat races are already sewn up, barring something that would be most improbable. Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook will become the 16th player in NBA history to win two scoring titles, Houston's James Harden will lead the league in assists for the first time and Miami's Hassan Whiteside should be able to wrap up his first rebounding crown.

Golden State's Stephen Curry is a lock to lead the league in 3-pointers made for the fifth straight year, and his Warriors teammate Klay Thompson will finish second in that category for the fourth consecutive season.

                        ---

                        TOP OF THE EAST

Boston controls the race for the top seed in the East playoffs.

The Celtics will be No. 1 in the East if they beat Milwaukee, or if Cleveland loses to Toronto. The Cavaliers won't have LeBron James on Wednesday night, and are 0-7 this season when he doesn't play.

Depending on perspective, James will either be resting, recovering or revving for the start of the playoffs. It's part of his usual playoff preparedness, since he hasn't appeared in a regular-season finale in a decade.

Cleveland can still be No. 1 with a win and a Boston loss.

                        ---

                        BOTTOM OF THE EAST

Dwyane Wade helped Miami win three championships.

Now, he might help keep the Heat out of the playoffs.

It's three teams - Indiana, Chicago and Miami - for the last two spots in the East field. Indiana (which plays Atlanta) and Chicago (which plays Brooklyn) control their destinies.

If the Pacers win, they're in. If the Bulls win, they're in. If either loses, the door opens for Miami.

The Heat would reach the playoffs with a win over Washington, and a loss by either Indiana or Chicago.

                        ---

                        EAST MATCHUPS

The 1-8 and 2-7 matchups in the East cannot be finalized until Wednesday.

Toronto is the No. 3 seed and will face either Milwaukee or Indiana. Washington is the No. 4 seed and will open the playoffs against either Atlanta or Milwaukee.

Everything else is still up in the air. Depending on results Tuesday and Wednesday, any of four teams - Indiana, Atlanta, Chicago or Miami - could wind up getting the No. 7 spot. And the Pacers might be No. 6, No. 7, No. 8 or out of the playoffs entirely at No. 9.

                        ---

                        CLIPPERS-JAZZ

Utah hasn't started the playoffs at home since 2001.

The Jazz could change that this year, if they beat San Antonio on Wednesday while the Clippers lose at home to Sacramento. That's the only scenario where the Jazz would be seeded No. 4 in the Western Conference playoffs.

Otherwise, the Clippers will get home-court for the first-round series against Utah.

All the other seeds and matchups out West for the first round are set: No. 1 Golden State vs. No. 8 Portland, No. 2 San Antonio vs. No. 7 Memphis, and No. 3 Houston vs. No. 6 Oklahoma City.

                            April 11, 2017

ATLANTA (AP) Dwight Howard had 19 points and 12 rebounds as the resurgent Atlanta Hawks won their fourth straight game, routing the listless Charlotte Hornets 103-76 on Tuesday night to wrap up the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference.

The Hawks will face the Washington Wizards in the opening round of the playoffs.

A week ago, Atlanta's playoff hopes were in jeopardy after a dismal stretch that included two losses to Brooklyn, the worst team in the NBA.

Then, in a sudden turnaround that epitomized the team's maddening inconsistency this season, the Hawks knocked off East-leading Boston and recorded two straight stunning victories over the defending NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers, including Sunday's comeback from a 26-point deficit.

This one was never in doubt. Charlotte played its regular-season finale already eliminated from the playoffs and without its best player, Kemba Walker.

                            NUGGETS 109, MAVERICKS 91

DALLAS (AP) - Gary Harris scored 20 points and Denver beat Dallas with the Mavericks honoring retiring Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo as a ceremonial player.

With nothing at stake in a lost season that will be the worst for Dallas (32-49) since going 20-62 in 1997-98, the Mavericks followed through with an idea hatched in part by star Dirk Nowitzki weeks ago when it was clear Romo wasn't returning to the Cowboys.

Romo was honored exactly a week after announcing he was leaving football to become the No. 1 NFL analyst at CBS.

The soon-to-be-37-year-old had the crowd on its feet in the final minute hoping he could play, but Romo wasn't on the roster or under contract.

After breaking a bone in his back last preseason, the career passing leader for the storied Cowboys franchise lost the starting job he held for 10 years to rookie Dak Prescott and decided not to play for another team.

Mason Plumlee and Malik Beasley scored 16 apiece in the first game for the Nuggets (39-42) since getting eliminated from the postseason. Nowitzki scored 21 for Dallas.

                            THUNDER 100, TIMBERWOLVES 98

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Victor Oladipo scored 20 points and hit a jumper with 6.3 seconds to play to lift Russell Westbrook-less Oklahoma City over Minnesota.

With Westbrook resting for the first time this season, Oladipo also had nine rebounds and six assists, and the Thunder outrebounded Minnesota 54-35. Starters Taj Gibson and Andre Roberson also sat out as the Thunder prepare for a first-round series against Houston. Domantas Sabonis added 19 points and nine rebounds.

Karl-Anthony Towns had 26 points and 12 rebounds, while Andrew Wiggins overcame a 1-for-11 start to finish with 18 points for the Minnesota. But the Timberwolves again struggled to get stops down the stretch and Wiggins missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer as they lost their fifth straight game.

                            LAKERS 108, PELICANS 96

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Metta World Peace scored a team-leading 18 points during what might have been his final home game for the Lakers, and Los Angeles extended its late-season winning streak to five games with a victory over New Orleans.

World Peace made his 840th career NBA start and hit four 3-pointers while scoring all of his points in the second half, thrilling his younger teammates and setting off chants of his name from the Staples Center crowd.

Although he hasn't announced his retirement, the 37-year-old veteran of 17 NBA seasons got several standing ovations down the stretch.

Cheick Diallo scored 19 points for the Pelicans, who lost their fifth straight while playing without big men Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins.

                            KINGS 129, SUNS 104

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Buddy Hield scored a career-high 30 points and Ty Lawson had his first career triple-double, getting 22 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds as Sacramento beat Phoenix.

The Kings never trailed, scoring the game's first nine points, leading by 19 at halftime and keeping a double-digit lead the entire second half.

Ben McLemore, Willie Cauley-Stein and Georgios Papagiannis all had 13 points for the Kings. Skal Labissiere and Anthony Tolliver had 12 points apiece. The Kings snapped a two-game losing streak, beating the Suns for the third time in four games this season.

Tyler Ulis had 27 points and Marquese Chriss scored 22 for Phoenix. Leading scorer Devin Booker was given the night off as the Suns finished 24-58.

                              Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

                              13) Angels 6, Rangers 5 (10)— Halos did it again; they trailed this game 5-0 in 7th inning, but won and are now 6-2 and atop the AL West. Angels scored seven runs in bottom of the ninth to stun the Mariners 10-9 on Sunday.

There have been 61 games already this season where a team trailed by 3+ runs in the ninth inning; Angels are 2-0, everyone else is 0-59.

                              12) Three years ago, December of 2013, my buddy Mike and I watched a Christmas tournament here in Las Vegas, at Bishop Gorman HS— Gorman’s third-string center was a sophomore named Zach Collins, who went on to play at Gonzaga this season, scoring 10 ppg in 17.2 mpg.

Now the young man is off to the NBA, following in the footsteps of his HS teammate Stephen Zimmerman, who played one year at UNLV and now plays for Orlando’s D-League team.

Wish the kid well, but I am skeptical this is the best thing for his development as a player- he only played 17.2 minutes/game this year, now all of a sudden he is a pro?

                              11) Sacramento’s Georgios Papagiannis got a technical foul last night; it was the Kings’ first technical foul since they traded DeMarcus Cousins February 20- they had been the only NBA team without a technical during that time.

                              10) Why did Tony Romo suit up for the Dallas Mavericks last night?

                              9) When Fred Couples won The Masters 25 years ago, he drove the ball 20 yards shorter than he did this past weekend, at age 57. Golf equipment has made golf courses a lot shorter.

                              8) Monday night, Washington Nationals were first big league team in four years to have an error from all four infield positions in the same game.

                              7) Buster Posey goes on the 7-day concussion DL; you wonder if he will wind up moving out from behind the plate to avoid more of this in the future, though this one came when he was batting, not catching?

                              6) If Erik Spoelstra wins NBA Coach of the Year and Miami misses the playoffs (they were 11-30 at one point), would that be the first time it ever happened?

                              5) Quinnipiac transfer Mikey Dixon signs on with St John’s; from what I read on the Interweb Tuesday, this is a good get for Chris Mullin’s team.

                              4) New Mexico hired its new basketball coach; Paul Weir, who comes from rival New Mexico State, which should make the two Lobo-Aggie games next season more interesting.

Weir has strong recruiting connections in Canada; Aggies will have their third coach in three seasons next year- -Marvin Menzies left Las Cruces LY to be the coach at UNLV.

                              3) Longest NFL playoff droughts: Buffalo 17 years, Cleveland 14 years, Rams 12 years.

                              2) I’m convinced that defensive shifts in baseball are overdone, especially early in innings vs players with excellent bat control. Why is it done so much? Maybe to justify the analytics people having their jobs- there have to be some pitchers who cringe about shifts. Behind closed doors, I’m guessing there almost has to be debate about the validity of shifting so much.

1— Matt Harvey left his start last night in the sixth inning with a tight hamstring; Mets led 10-2, so not sure if it was just a precaution, but the Mets need Harvey healthy this season.
