Game of the Night - Cleveland at Utah (Fox Sports Ohio, 9:05 ET)
The days where it looked like Kevin Love was an undersized spare tire that didn’t fit on Cleveland’s fancy SUV are long gone. After averaging just over 16 points and less than 10 rebounds during the last two seasons, he’s back up at 21.8 points and 10.9 rebounds, numbers he’d regularly surpass as a one-man band in Minnesota but didn’t seem likely to approach as the third man on the Cavs’ pecking order.

Love is shooting just under 40 percent from 3-point range and is on pace to knock down exactly 200 3-pointers for the first time in his career. Although he’s often camped out on the perimeter to provide spacing for LeBron James and Kyrie Irving to do their thing, Love has become more assertive in picking his spots and has played with more energy as he’s grown more comfortable.

In Sunday night’s 120-116 win in Phoenix, James, Irving and Love each scored 25 or more points, marking just the third time since they were brought together in 2014 that they’ve managed that feat. It was by no means a perfect effort since the Suns rallied to tie the game in the fourth quarter despite trailing 69-53 at the break, but James made a couple of huge 3-pointers and Cleveland walked away victorious despite allowing Phoenix to go 16-for-22 from the field without a single turnover in the third quarter.

Some Suns were very annoyed that many fans showed up just to cheer the defending champs since a crowd featuring the likes of Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps and Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald made the game a local event, but that’s to be expected. Throughout history, all great teams take their show on the road, and James has had lots of practice performing in front of sold-out opposing arenas.

Cleveland takes the court in Salt Lake City sporting a 10-5 road record, the top mark in the Eastern Conference. The Cavs trail San Antonio (17-3), Golden State (16-3) and Houston (15-6), but have a chance to put a dent in that edge since 11 of the next 18 between now and the All-Star break will be played away from home.

Despite their success and a 3-1 record in 2017, Cleveland has yet to cover in the new year, losing outright at home against Chicago while failing to cover at home against New Orleans and in road wins at Brooklyn and Phoenix. The Cavs are just 6-9 against the number on the road this season and have only been an underdog on four occasions, losing three of those outright. They opened as 2.5-point favorites against the Jazz and should be favored on every stop on the trip until they get to Monday’s Martin Luther King Day clash at Golden State. The only caveat would be if their All-Stars take the night off in Portland on Wednesday since it’s the second night of a back-to-back, but it would be unlikely that Love would sit in his one appearance in his hometown.

The Cavs will be facing the Jazz for the first time all season, which will leave only the Spurs, Thunder, Timberwolves, Kings and Nuggets as teams they haven’t run into yet. They’ll play at Sacramento on Friday.

Utah won the only meeting in Salt Lake City last season, 94-85 on March 14 and have beaten James twice at home since he returned to Cleveland after his four-year stint in Miami. Overall, the Cavs have won five of seven in the series, but have had their hands full with the size of Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors inside.

James will have to contend with wings Gordon Hayward and Derrick Hood, smaller players he should be able to post and burst by off the dribble, so he could have another big night after scoring 28 in Phoenix. It remains to be seen whether DeAndre Liggins will remain in Cleveland’s starting lineup, but the newly acquired Kyle Korver should be active for the first time and may replace him at shooting guard, providing another lethal offensive weapon who can spread the floor. Korver spent the better part of three seasons in Utah from 2007-10 and set an NBA record by shooting 53.6 percent from 3-point range in ’09-’10. He was acquired for Mike Dunleavy, Mo Williams and a first-round pick over the weekend but couldn’t play against the Suns because Dunleavy had yet to report to Atlanta.

The Jazz will be playing at home for the first time in ’17, having wrapped up a 2-3 road trip with an 88-79 loss in Memphis on Sunday. They did get point guard George Hill back from concussion protocol over the weekend and have been a much better team with him in the lineup, going 9-4 with him at the point and 12-12 in his absence. Utah hasn’t beaten a team with a winning record since Dec. 18, losing their last five games against strong opponents. The ‘under’ has prevailed in 13 of their last 16 games and each of the last five times the total has been over 200. Tonight’s number is set at 202.

            Notable Head-to-Head Trends

-- Chicago and Washington havs split their last six meetings, including the two they've played against one another this season. Dwyane Wade is getting the night off, while Jimmy Butler will look to bounce back from a flu bug that limited him to just one point in nearly 29 minutes in last night's home loss to Oklahoma City and has him considered 'doubtful' to play here.

-- A four-game winning streak has helped the Celtics pull within one game of the Raptors in the Atlantic Division, but they'll be without guard Avery Bradley in Toronto. The Raptors won this seaon's only meeting in Boston on Dec. 9 and have won four of five in the series, but it runs up against a sizzling Isaiah Thomas, who is averaging 34.8 points over his last five games.

-- The Hawks have the East's longest win streak, looking to earn their seventh straight victory against a Brooklyn squad that owns the NBA's worst record and longest losing streak (6). This will be the first game Atlanta is playing since the front office announced it is no longer interested in moving All-Star forward Paul Millsap. The Hawks have won their last four games as a favorite.

-- Charlotte had lost 10 consecutive meetings against the Rockets prior to a 125-109 home win last March. Mike D'Antoni's team is looking for an NBA-best ninth straight victory and haven't lost to Charlotte at home since 2005, a run off 11 consecutive games. Nicolas Batum remains out with a hyperextended knee, but Rockets guard Eric Gordon, the league's leader in made 3-pointers, is questionable with a toe injury.

-- The Bucks get Giannis Antetokounmpo back after an illness kept him out of Sunday's 107-101 home loss to Washington. The Spurs have won nine straight in the series and haven't lost to Milwaukee in San Antonio since Dec. 30, 2008. The Spurs won the only meeting this season 97-96 on Dec. 5.

-- The Lakers have lost nine consecutive games at the hands of the Trail Blazers and haven't beaten them at Staples since 2013, losing their last five.

-- Golden State hasn't lost to Miami since LeBron left town, winning the last four encounters. Miami has been banged up on its road trip, but should have center Hassan Whiteside and point guard Goran Dragic available.

-- Detroit has won six of seven against the Kings, but split last season's meetings, losing in Sacramento. DeMarcus Cousins against Andre Drummond should be worth the price of admission.

TORONTO (AP) DeMar DeRozan scored a season-high 41 points, Kyle Lowry had 24 and the Toronto Raptors rallied to end the Boston Celtics' four-game winning streak with a 114-106 victory Tuesday night.

DeRozan added 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, and Jonas Valanciunas had 18 points and a career-high 23 rebounds. The Raptors bounced back after losing to Chicago and Houston last weekend.

Toronto also kept itself above Boston in the Eastern Conference standings. A win would have pulled the Celtics even with the Raptors for second place behind Cleveland.

Isaiah Thomas had 27 points and Marcus Smart scored 16 for the Celtics.

Boston pulled in front with 3:54 left in the second quarter and led until Lowry's 3-pointer with 2:41 remaining in the game. With 5:05 to play, Boston was ahead 102-95, but the Raptors closed on a 19-4 run to clinch the victory, their second of the season over Boston.

                ROCKETS 121, HORNETS 114

HOUSTON (AP) - James Harden had 40 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists for his second consecutive triple-double, and Houston outlasted Charlotte for its ninth straight win.

The Rockets missed 10 shots in a row and let an 18-point lead evaporate before coach Mike D'Antoni called a timeout with 2:26 left. Ryan Anderson made Houston's first shot in more than four minutes with a 3-pointer out of the timeout, and after a block on the other end, Harden's layup put Houston up 115-111 with just over a minute to play.

Kemba Walker cut the deficit to one with a 3-pointer, but another layup by Harden made it 117-114 with 28.6 seconds left. Charlotte missed three 3-point tries in the final seconds.

Harden got his 11th triple-double this season and the 20th of his career. He had 40 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds Sunday against Toronto, making him the fourth player in NBA history with at least 40 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in consecutive games.

Walker had 25 points for the Hornets, who dropped their third straight.

                JAZZ 100, CAVS 92

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Gordon Hayward went toe-to-toe with LeBron James in the second half to help Utah beat Cleveland.

Hayward had 28 points and went back and forth with James during a decisive third quarter. James brought the Cavaliers back from a 15-point halftime deficit before Hayward drove the lead back to 14.

Trey Lyles scored eight straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in the fourth quarter to help the Jazz hold on.

Rudy Gobert had 11 points and 14 rebounds for Utah.

James finished with 29 points and Kyrie Irving added 20 for the defending champs. Kyle Korver had two points and three rebounds in 17 minutes during his Cleveland debut.

                WIZARDS 101, BULLS 99

WASHINGTON (AP) - John Wall scored 26 points, including a game-winning baseline jumper with 5.9 seconds left, and added 14 assists as Washington moved above .500 by defeating Chicago.

Marcin Gortat had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Washington (19-18). He also set the screen that freed up Wall for his tiebreaking jumper to seal a 10th straight home win.

Markieff Morris and Bradley Beal each scored 19 points for the Wizards, who completed their biggest comeback victory of the season after trailing by 18 in the second quarter.

Washington is above .500 for the first time since it was 6-5 last season on Nov. 24, 2015.

Denzel Valentine set career highs by scoring 19 points and making five 3-pointers for the short-handed Bulls, who led by seven in the fourth quarter.

Rajon Rondo added 12 points in his first game since Dec. 30.

Chicago was without leading scorers Jimmy Butler (ill) and Dwyane Wade (resting). Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic also sat out with an illness.

Wall hit a pull-up that tied it at 99 with 47.4 seconds to play.

                BUCKS 109, SPURS 107

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Michael Beasley scored a season-high 28 points in place of an ill Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Milwaukee rallied to beat San Antonio.

Kawhi Leonard had 30 points for the Spurs, who had their nine-game home winning streak snapped.

Jabari Parker's layup with 2:56 remaining gave Milwaukee a 103-101 lead, its first since the 3:24 mark of the first quarter. Moments later, rookie Malcolm Brogdon hit a 3-pointer to give the Bucks a 108-107 edge. Brogdon sank one of two free throws with 6.7 seconds to go, and Manu Ginobili's 3-pointer hit the side of the backboard at the buzzer.

Antetokounmpo, who missed Milwaukee's previous game, started despite having a fever at morning shootaround. He was scoreless for the first time this season, missing his only three attempts in nine minutes.

Beasley responded with 22 points in the second half.

Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge was sidelined with a stomach virus.

                HAWKS 117, NETS 97

NEW YORK (AP) - Dennis Schroder had 19 points and 10 assists, Dwight Howard added 14 points and 16 rebounds, and Atlanta beat skidding Brooklyn to win its season-high seventh straight.

Paul Millsap added 14 points for the Hawks, who led the entire way and have won eight of their last nine road games.

Brook Lopez scored 20 points for the Nets, who have lost seven in a row and 12 of 13.

Nets coach Kenny Atkinson was a Hawks assistant for four years, the last three (2013-16) under current Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer.

                WARRIORS 107, HEAT 95

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Stephen Curry had 24 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, Kevin Durant added 28 points and Golden State picked it up late to beat Miami.

Durant also had eight rebounds and Draymond Green had 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists in the Warriors' fifth straight win against the Heat and eighth in 10, including three in a row at home.

Klay Thompson had the night off for rest after he played through illness the past two games.

Hassan Whiteside had 28 points and 20 rebounds for the Heat, outscored 26-14 in the third quarter after leading 54-53 at halftime. Miami lost its third straight game and dropped to 1-4 on a six-game road trip.

                TRAIL BLAZERS 108, LAKERS 87

LOS ANGELES (AP) - C.J. McCollum scored 25 points and Portland used a dominant third quarter to defeat Los Angeles for the 10th consecutive time.

The Trail Blazers were down by two to start the second half, but held the Lakers to 21.7 percent shooting (5 of 23) and blocked four shots in the third quarter, outscoring Los Angeles 23-12.

Damian Lillard overcame an 0-for-8 start to finish with 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Portland. Al-Farouq Aminu had 15 rebounds, and Maurice Harkless scored 14 points.

The Lakers shot 38.6 percent for the game. Luol Deng led them with 14 points but did not make a field goal after the first half.

                KINGS 100, PISTONS 94

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - DeMarcus Cousins had 24 points, 13 rebounds and six assists to help Sacramento stage a fourth-quarter comeback in defeating Detroit.

The Pistons led by nine entering the fourth, when they were outscored 32-17. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Kings, who had lost five of six since winning a season-high four straight.

Anthony Tolliver added 17 points for Sacramento, and Kosta Koufos scored 10 of his 12 in the final period.

The Kings closed the game with an 11-2 run, and Detroit went scoreless over the final 1:15. Sacramento made four 3-pointers in the fourth and was 13 of 24 overall from beyond the arc, including 4 of 5 for Cousins.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope made six 3s and had 21 points for the Pistons, who had won three of four.

                  60-1— Los Angles Angels

50-1— Colorado Rockies, Chicago White Sox

                  Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

                  13) Milwaukee Bucks came into the NBA in 1968; they went 27-55 in their first season, but 56-26 in their second season, then 68-16 with an NBA title in their third season.

This is fairly graphic evidence that Kareem Adbul-Jabbar is the greatest basketball player ever; they won a coin flip with the Phoenix Suns for the top pick in the ’69 draft and the right to select Kareem. Add in his 88-2 record as a college player, and you get the point.

They outlawed the dunk in college basketball because of Kareem.

No one dominated the sport like Abdul-Jabbar did, but because he has a surly personality, doesn’t do a lot of commercials, he fell out of public consciousness, unlike Michael Jordan, whose Jordan Brand shoes/apparel is still a huge money maker for Nike.

Then there is this: freshmen were ineligible to play college ball back then. UCLA won the national title when Kareem was a senior in high school— his freshman team beat the UCLA varsity by 20 that year, and the UCLA varsity was the defending national champs.

                  12) Underdogs were 25-15-1 vs spread in bowl games this season.

                  11) ACC went 9-3 in bowl games; they were underdog in seven of the 12 games.

                  10) Alabama RB Josh Scarbrough broke his leg in Monday night’s game, which no doubt will be brought up next year if/when a running back sits out a bowl game to keep himself healthy for the NFL Draft.

                  9) Wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if college football scrapped the rule that says the clock stops after every first down. National title game took over four hours to play and ratings were a bit down, even though it was a great game. Knee-jerk reaction will be to shorten games.

My theory on the ratings being down? Two teams from the south played; people in other regions of the country aren’t as interested if their teams aren’t playing.

                  8) College football coaches don’t go on vacation now that the games are over; National Signing Day is February 1, three weeks from today, so coaches will be working their butts off on the phone between now and then, recruiting players who will win games down the road.

Games that will be played from 2018-2021 will be partially determined by who signs where on February 1st. Football recruiting is a big. big business.

                  7) Giants’ DE Jason Pierre-Paul says he won’t sign a 1-year contract next season; what happens if no one offers him a multi-year deal? Will he retire?

                  6) March is going to feel a little different this year; the ACC tournament is in Brooklyn, for some reason. The Big 14 tourney is in Washington DC because of Maryland being in the league, but it doesn’t make much sense. Big 14 should have their tournament in the midwest; the ACC tourney should be somewhere on Tobacco Road.

                  5) I worked for New York State for 34 years in a mundane office job; if I needed a day off that I hadn’t asked for previously, had to call in sick and tell a person in charge that I wasn’t coming in that day. Failure to do so meant you went LWOP (Leave With-Out Pay), meaning there would be no pay for that day— I never did that once in 34 years.

My job wasn’t very important, certainly not as critical to my agency as a point guard is to an NBA team. Derrick Rose didn’t bother to call/text the Knicks Monday, when he flew to Chicago and missed their game; when they called him, he couldn’t be bothered to answer the phone.

I’m very curious how much the team fined him, but no one is saying. Rose makes a little over $260,000 PER GAME- he is a free agent this summer. I’m curious where he’ll wind up.

                  4) Quick work-related story from my mediocre career with New York State- this happened back in the late 80’s. I was 28 or 29 at the time.

In mid-afternoon on a Thursday, this is in mid-October, my boss’ boss calls me into her office. She was kind of a stern woman, we had very little interaction, but she had a job for me to do.

“We need a World Series pool and I want you to run it. You think you can do that?”

I’m trying not to laugh as I sat there, but quickly agreed and went about my duty and we had a good World Series pool that year. Sometimes, working for the government was fun.

                  3) Tuesday’s college hoop:
                  — West Virginia 89, Baylor 68— Bears lasted one day at #1- they had 29 turnovers.
                  — Villanova 79, Xavier 54— Surprisingly easy win for the Wildcats.
                  — Kentucky 87, Vanderbilt 81— Commodores had their chances in last minute.
                  — Florida State 88, Duke 72– Seminoles are 4-0 in ACC for first time.

                  2) Oakland Raiders let OC Bill Musgrave walk after his contract expired, promoted QB coach Todd Dowling to OC, telling the world they think Dowling was more responsible for Derek Carr’s improved play than Musgrave was. Interesting decision.

1— Remember Warrick Dunn, the running back for the Buccaneers? His mom was a police officer who was killed in the line of duty, when Dunn was 18. He used her life insurance to buy a house for himself and four younger siblings- there was no father in the picture.

After Dunn became an NFL player, he started a charity that has put 152 families into affordable homes, just great work. If there was a People Hall of Fame, Dunn would be in it.

Back in 2006, one of the families Dunn’s charity gave a home to was Clemson QB Deshaun Watson’s family.

                              January 11, 2017

Favorites fared well on Tuesday night in the NBA by winning seven of nine times, but turned in a 4-5 ATS mark. The biggest underdog to win outright was Milwaukee, who knocked off San Antonio as 10-point road ‘dogs, 109-107, while Miami and Chicago each cashed in losses as double-digit underdogs. The UNDER hit in six of nine contests, including in both games with a closing total of 226 or higher between the Hornets and Rockets, while the Blazers crushed the Lakers, 108-87 on a 228 ½ total.

                              Game of the Night – Grizzlies at Thunder (-4 ½, 205) – 8:05 PM EST – ESPN

Each of these Western Conference squads head into tonight’s matchup riding modest two-game winning streaks. The Grizzlies (24-16 SU, 21-19 ATS) are coming off a pair of impressive victories over the Warriors and Jazz, as Memphis erased a 24-point deficit in a 128-119 overtime triumph at Golden State on Friday. Memphis avoided a letdown in its next game back at home by cruising past Utah on Sunday, 88-79 as 2 ½-point favorites to win its third straight contest at FedEx Forum.

Oklahoma City (23-16 SU, 21-17-1 ATS) looks to improve on a 14-6 home mark before hitting the road for a six-game trip on Friday at Minnesota. The Thunder ripped the Bulls on Monday in Chicago, 109-94 as Russell Westbrook finished one assist shy of his 18th triple-double of the season. The big man duo of Steven Adams and Enes Kanter combined to shoot 20-of-25 from the field for 42 points, while OKC hit 57% of its shots from the floor.

The Grizzlies shot lights out against the Thunder in their last meeting on December 29 in Memphis in a 114-80 rout. Memphis led the whole way, while outscoring OKC in the fourth quarter, 36-19, as the Thunder connected on only 4-of-22 shots from three-point range. Mike Conley missed the game due to injury for Memphis, but the Grizzlies hit 13-of-22 attempts from downtown, including six three-pointers from Troy Daniels off the bench.

The Thunder has captured six of the last nine meetings at Chesapeake Energy Arena since 2014, including a 112-94 blowout as 8 ½-point favorites last January. Memphis is riding a six-game OVER streak on the road, while topping the 100-point mark in each of those games. The Thunder has posted an impressive 7-1-1 ATS record in its last nine opportunities in the home favorite role with the only straight-up loss in this span coming to the Hawks on December 19.

                              Missing Magic

Orlando didn’t have high expectations this season, as the Magic is in the midst of a 1-5 SU/ATS run the last six games. The Magic continue a six-game road trip in Los Angeles against the Clippers tonight after getting run by the Lakers on Sunday, 111-95 as two-point underdogs. The offense is non-existent recently by scoring 95 points or fewer in each of their past three losses, while easily cashing the UNDER in each of those defeats.

The Clippers closed out December with six consecutive losses, but 2017 has been bright for Doc Rivers’ club by winning four straight games. Three of those victories came at Staples Center, including Sunday’s 98-86 triumph over Miami as nine-point favorites. Los Angeles has won seven of its past nine home contests, while looking for the sweep of Orlando after beating the Magic last month, 113-108 as eight-point road favorites.

                              Welcome Back, Derrick

The Knicks were blown out by the Pelicans, 110-96 on Monday night as New York suffered its eighth loss in the last nine games. Derrick Rose didn’t suit up for New York as the point guard was in Chicago tending to a family matter, which came to a surprise to many in the Knicks’ organization. Rose is back for tonight’s contest in Philadelphia as the Knicks try to improve on a 6-13 road record, while facing the 76ers for the first time this season.

Last season, New York pulled off a four-game sweep of Philadelphia, including a pair of road favorite victories at Wells Fargo Center. The 76ers may own a 10-25 record, but Philadelphia has heated up of late by winning three of their last four games, while compiling a 5-1 ATS mark in the past six contests.

                              We’re Not Tired

The Rockets have jumped out of the gate with an impressive 31-9 mark, coming off Tuesday’s 121-114 home victory over the Hornets for their ninth straight win. Houston travels to Minnesota tonight as the Rockets go for their 10th win in 10 tries this season with no rest, while owning a 7-2 ATS mark in this situation.

The last time the Rockets faced Minnesota back on December 17, Houston played with no rest and were in danger of suffering its first loss in this rest situation, trailing by 12 points with two minutes remaining. Houston posted a furious rally to force overtime and ultimately stun Minnesota at Target Center, 111-109, but couldn’t cash as 2 ½-point favorites. The Wolves held off the Mavericks on Monday night, but Minnesota owns a dreadful 1-10 SU and 4-7 ATS mark off a victory this season.

                              Not Too Late

The Wizards started the season at 3-10 under new head coach Scott Brooks, but Washington has rebounded to win 16 of its last 24 games to forge above the .500 mark. Washington rallied past an undermanned Chicago squad in Tuesday’s 101-99 victory for its third straight win. The Wizards head to Boston tonight as Washington has compiled a 1-6 SU and 3-4 ATS mark with no rest, while sailing OVER the total six times in this situation.

The Celtics had their four-game winning streak snapped at Toronto last night after getting outscored in the fourth quarter, 34-22 in a 114-106 setback. Boston is riding a five-game home winning streak, as the Celtics try to avenge a 118-93 blowout loss at Verizon Center in early November. Last season, the Celtics routed the Wizards twice at TD Garden with the two victories coming by 20 and 30 points.

                              Oregon Trail

The Cavaliers continue their six-game road swing tonight in Portland, looking to rebound from last night’s 100-92 setback at Utah. Cleveland failed to cover in its fifth straight game, while scoring 94 points or less for the third time in the last five contests. Heading to Portland may be a fix to Cleveland’s offensive issues, as the Cavaliers posted a season-high 137 points against the Blazers in late November, led by Kevin Love’s incredible 34-point first quarter.

Portland returns home after a 108-87 rout of the Lakers in Los Angeles last night as the Blazers shoot for consecutive victories for the first time in over a month. The Blazers are riding a 6-2 ATS run in the last eight games, including a 3-1 ATS record in the past four opportunities as an underdog. Portland has struggled with no rest this season at 2-6 SU/ATS, as the Blazers were on the second of a back-to-back the last time they faced Cleveland in that 137-125 setback on November 23.

                              • 3-pointer: Emerging East Teams
                                January 11, 2017

As the Cleveland Cavaliers climbed 20 games over .500 for the first time on Sunday, one couldn’t help but notice that 11 of the Eastern Conference’s 15 teams entered the week with 20 or fewer wins. The only other East team with a record better than 10 games over .500 were the Raptors, which means that portion of this postseason is going to be a drag unless multiple teams improve over the next few months.

While the Warriors will be tested as they look to get to their third straight NBA Finals, Cleveland’s road looks lined with rose pedals by comparison. Literally. Derrick Rose’s Knicks could be their first opponent and have looked anything but a super team he predicted they would be. Given the drama surrounding New York, landing the No. 8 seed would seem like a win at this point.

Despite the star power of Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis and Rose, the results haven’t come. Fortunately for the sake of our entertainment value come April and May, other teams are beginning to step up.

Behind Houston’s nine-game run of victories, the three longest winning streaks in the league entering the week belonged to Atlanta, Boston and Indiana. While they’re not necessarily the three teams most likely to emerge as the Cavs’ top adversary, they are worth watching to see whether their early success in 2017 is a sign of things to come.

If these teams come through to join the Raptors and others worth watching like Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Bucks and John Wall’s Wizards, the Eastern Conference playoffs may indeed be salvageable.

Despite "Greek Freak" being ill, Milwaukee beat the Spurs in San Antonio on Tuesday behind Jabari Parker, Michael Beasley and rookie Malcolm Brogdon. Washington survived depleted Chicago 101-99 to climb over .500 for the first time. The Wizards have won 10 straight home games. In this week's 3-pointer, we'll look at three other surging Eastern Conference teams worth watching.

                                Soaring in Atlanta

The Hawks last lost on Dec. 26 and own victories over the Spurs, Pelicans and Mavs during their surge. Despite ownership appearing to be rebuilding on the run by moving Kyle Korver and shopping All-Star Paul Millsap, the team has pressed forward and actually thrived on the road. Thanks to a blowout win in Brooklyn on Tuesday, the Hawks completed a sweep of a four-game trip. Considering Atlanta lost eight straight road games from Nov. 18-Dec. 3, that's a major accomplishment.

Since head coach Mike Budenholzer also has final say in all transactions as team president, the fact he’s been able to keep the team focused is a testament to veterans like Millsap, who hasn’t allowed the rumors to affect his on-court performance. On Monday, the news came down from Yahoo! Sports that GM Wes Wilcox had informed teams that Millsap was no longer available. We’ll see whether that remains the case over the next month, but for now, it renews hope.

Less than two years removed from a 60-win season and a trip to the conference finals, the acquisition of Dwight Howard to replace Al Horford helped produce a 9-2 start, but losses in 10 of 11 quickly drowned out heightened expectations. It will be interesting to see what direction they go in after. Despite moving Korver, convincing Mike Dunleavy, Jr. to come on board when he wanted to be bought out suggests they’re still interested in competing for a division title and ultimately, a ring, but the fact so many contenders are sniffing around Millsap means things could change at any moment.

The Hawks returned home and have a few days off before settling in for weekend home games against the Celtics and Bucks, teams that also harbor postseason expectations.

                                Boston is Back

Boston had won four straight before falling to Toronto on Tuesday, riding an amazing run from point guard Isaiah Thomas, who is now averaging 28.0 points per game. Thomas closed out 2016 with a 52-point game on Dec. 30 and scored 38 points to secure a 117-108 win against New Orleans to close out a perfect 4-0 homestand. He went for 27 points and seven assists in the loss to the Raptors.

The diminutive Celtics guard was outplayed by Kyle Lowry and the Raptors and failed to even up the Atlantic Division, but has little time to stress over it. Thomas returns home to square off against John Wall-led Washington on Wednesday. Next week features home games against Kemba Walker’s Hornets, Rose’s Knicks and Damian Lillard’s Trail Blazers, so he can really make an impression as he seeks a second consecutive All-Star berth. Thomas was fourth in the first returns of fan voting behind Kyrie Irving, Dwyane Wade and DeMar DeRozan, so people have really taken notice of his exploits.

The Celtics have fared well since getting Horford back in the lineup to provide the defensive presence they hoped he’d bring to the table when he agreed to leave Atlanta for Boston as a free agent, but it’s been Thomas’ big nights on offense that has helped put away games of late. He’ll have to do even more of the heavy lifting this week since backcourt partner Avery Bradley is suffering through an Achilles injury. Marcus Smart has stepped his game up of late and should take on an increased role.

Boston has seen the over prevail in 11 consecutive games after the 114-106 loss to the Raptors, averaging 114 points while surrendering 111.

                                Faster pace lifts Indiana

Indiana has gotten its act together to open 2017 and hasn’t lost since Dec. 28. The over has come in six straight times in Pacers games, prevailing in nine of the last 10.

All but one of the wins have come at home, but they’ll be a long way from Indianapolis for their next encounter, a date with the Nuggets at 02 Arena in London on Thursday. The Pacers will try to move their winning streak to six games, rallying after dropping a season-high four straight games from Dec. 20-28. They’ve averaged 118.6 points in the victories, finally executing at the tempo team president Larry Bird wanted employed when he let Frank Vogel go and hired Nate McMillan.

The Pacers won’t play again after the London game until they’re back home to host the Pelicans on Jan. 16, so they should have fresh legs once they overcome any jet lag. McMillan’s first season as head coach didn’t start as Bird had hoped, but this current run suggests that the pieces are finally coming together.

Although no one will line up the Bulls, Magic, Pistons, Nets and Knicks as a murderer’s row, the fact the Pacers handled business against teams that they were favored to win against bodes well for their continued improvement since they’ll face New Orleans, Sacramento and the L.A. Lakers after they return from England. All are sub-.500 teams. If Indiana takes care of business, they could be hunting a 10-game winning streak when they take the court at Utah on Jan. 21.
