Tuesday’s six-pack
— Dodgers signed 3B Justin Turner, closer Kenley Jansen to big contracts.
— College football coaching changes: Charlie Strong to USF, Luke Fickell to Cincinnati, Lane Kiffin to Florida Atlantic.
— Kiffin takes close to a 50% pay cut to become a head coach again.
— QB Jarrett Stidham transfers from Baylor to Auburn, a good get for Gus Malzahn.
— Dexter Fowler will be the first St Louis Cardinal to wear #25 since Mark McGwire.
— LIU 74, St John’s 73— Really bad loss for Chris Mullin; they also lost to Delaware State.
Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….
13) First of all, the Rams are much better off NOW than they were when Jeff Fisher was hired as Rams’ coach in 2012. Much closer to being a winning team now but they’re still a losing team and in the NFL, that means you lose your job and that happened Monday. Special teams coach John Fassel will be the interim coach for the last three games.
Awkwardness: Rams’ COO Kevin Demoff is the son of agent Marvin Demoff, who is Fisher’s agent. Should make Christmas dinner only slightly uncomfortable in the Demoff home.
12) If you made me guess who the Rams go after to be their next coach, I’d say Jon Gruden. If you let me choose, I’d say this: a) a combination of Mike/Kyle Shanahan or b) Stanford coach David Shaw, with Norv Turner as OC
No matter what, it needs to be someone with an offensive background, since they traded six draft picks to get QB Jared Goff.
11) Sunday was a rough day in the NFC West: all four teams lost, while turning ball over 15 teams and the 49ers didn’t have any turnovers. That is 15 turnovers for three teams. Oy.
10) Semi-good news for the Dolphins; it is a sprained ACL/MCL for Ryan Tannehill, not a torn ACL. Doubtful he plays again this year, but it makes next season’s prospects way better.
9) Arizona WR Michael Floyd got a DUI; when you’re on a underachieving 5-7-1 team and you’re about to be a free agent and then this happens, then Floyd is about to lose his job.
8) So you want to be a college coach? One of Western Michigan’s basketball players was charged with murder Monday in the shooting of a fellow student.
First of all, our condolences to the family of the victim. Very, very sad.
Second, the WMU coaches are now on the hot seat. Western has made the NCAAs once in 13 years (2014) under this coach; they’re 3-6 this year and now this happens. People who had nothing to do with this crime are going to pay for it.
7) One of the trophies Arnold Palmer won at the Masters sold at an auction this week for $444,012. Wow.
6) Lakers’ 6th man Lou Williams scored 137 points in a four-game stretch last week; since 1970, that is the most points scored in any four-game stretch by a non-starter.
5) People are frontrunners: Duke-UNLV game in Las Vegas Saturday had more blue than red in the stands. If Duke’s football team played in Las Vegas, how much blue is in the stands?
4) May have to research this next year, but it would be cumbersome; what is the %age of pass/run plays on 2nd and 10, after an incomplete pass on first down? I swear, NFL teams almost always run the ball in that spot, because 3rd-and-10 is seen as a spot where turnovers happen. The term “manageable third down” is mentioned way too much.
3) Eagles lost long snapper Jon Dorembos to a wrist injury; the young man has had a tough life. When he was 12, living a normal suburban life, his father murdered his mother and is still in prison. Dorembos is also a magician who appeared on America’s Got Talent.
2) Think about Lane Kiffin’s resume; he’s been a head coach at Tennessee, USC and with the Raiders in the NFL; now he takes around a 50% pay cut to be HC at Florida Atlantic. Guess he didn’t like being an offensive coordinator, even at $1.6M a year.
1) Happy birthday to my late Uncle Roy, who would’ve turned 100 years old on Monday. He passed away when I was 7, during an operation that now would be routine bypass surgery, but in 1967. it was a new thing. I remember his laugh, a great, booming laugh. A good man.
