      Friday's Tip Sheet
      October 27, 2016

      Cavaliers (-2 ½, 204 ½) at Raptors – 7:05 PM EST

The last time these teams met in late May, Cleveland eliminated Toronto in the sixth game of the Eastern Conference Finals by 26 points. The Cavaliers finished last season with one more regular season victory than the Raptors en route to the franchise’s first ever NBA title. Cleveland raised its championship banner on Tuesday night and promptly routed New York, 117-88 to easily cash as 9 ½-point favorites. LeBron James posted a triple-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 14 assists for Cleveland, while the Cavs knocked down 13 three-pointers.

The Raptors were equally impressive in their season opener by pounding the Pistons, 109-91 as 6 ½-point home favorites. DeMar DeRozan led Toronto with 40 points, while center Jonas Valanciunas put up 32 points and 11 rebounds as the Raptors overcame a 3-of-18 performance from three-point range. For the exception of the Game 6 blowout to end their season, the Raptors fared well against the Cavaliers by winning four of five matchups at Air Canada Center, all in the underdog role.

      Magic at Pistons (-4, 198 ½) – 7:35 PM EST

The Frank Vogel era in Orlando got off to a bumpy start as the Magic lost to the rival Heat as three-point favorites, 108-96. The Magic were held to 38% shooting from the floor, while allowing 48% shooting to Miami as Orlando couldn’t capitalize on a 5-1 finish at Amway Center to close last season. Orlando begins a three-game road swing that continues to Cleveland on Saturday as the Magic didn’t fare well against the Pistons last season. Detroit has won the past six matchups with Orlando, including a three-game sweep in 2016.

The Pistons will try to move forward following a 109-91 loss at Toronto on Wednesday as the loss of point guard Reggie Jackson was impactful. Jackson is sidelined with a knee injury as his replacement, journeyman Ish Smith shot 3-of-10 from the floor and scored only six points. In all three victories over the Magic last season, the Pistons topped the 108-point mark each time, while all three games sailed OVER the total. Detroit took care of business in the role of a home favorite last season by posting a 19-9-1 ATS mark, while Orlando’s last win at the Palace of Auburn Hills came in November 2014.

      Pacers (-6 ½, 214) at Nets – 7:35 PM EST

Indiana’s offense exploded for 130 points in an opening victory over Dallas. Granted, 15 points came in overtime, but the Pacers shot 50% from the floor and drilled 10-of-19 attempts from three-point range. Myles Turner dominated the Dallas frontcourt with 30 points and 16 rebounds, while Paul George knocked down a key three-pointer in overtime to solidify a cover as 5 ½-point favorites. Last season, the Pacers posted a 9-9 ATS record in the role of a road favorite, as Indiana captured three of four meetings from Brooklyn (2-2 ATS).

The Nets put together a good fourth quarter effort in their opening night loss at Boston to cash as 11 ½-point underdogs in a 122-117 defeat. Dating back to last season, Brooklyn has dropped 11 consecutive games. Who was their last win against? You guessed it, the Pacers on March 26 as six-point underdogs in a 120-110 victory at Barclays Center. In spite of a new head coach and new faces on the roster, Brooklyn’s defense isn’t expected to improve as the Nets have allowed over 100 points in 17 of their last 18 games since last March.

      Suns at Thunder (-9 ½, 209) – 8:05 PM EST

Oklahoma City rallied past Philadelphia in the season opener, avoided an embarrassing loss to the 76ers in a 103-97 victory. The Thunder failed to cash as nine-point favorites in their first game without Kevin Durant, as Russell Westbrook came within an assist of a triple-double with 32 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists. OKC swept the three-game series from Phoenix last season, while every game finished OVER the total. The Thunder has won 10 consecutive home meetings with the Suns since 2011, but Phoenix has covered in three of the past five road matchups.

Phoenix put together the ugliest opening night performance as the Suns were chased out by the Kings as three-point favorites, 113-94. The Suns scored 38 first half points, while allowing Sacramento to shoot 51% from the floor. Phoenix closed last season with a solid 7-4 ATS record in its final 11 games in the road underdog role, including outright victories at Memphis, Houston, and Orlando as ‘dogs of 9 ½ points or higher.

      Hornets at Heat (-2, 198) – 8:05 PM EST

Miami knocked Charlotte out of the first round of the playoffs in seven games, including three victories at home. The Heat won their first game in the post-Dwyane Wade era on Wednesday at Orlando, 108-96, led by Hassan Whiteside’s 18-point, 15-rebound effort. Each of the past five meetings between the Heat and Hornets have finished UNDER the total, while Charlotte has scored 91 points or less in five of the last seven matchups. Since 2009, the Heat have won eight consecutive home openers, including last season’s victory over the Hornets.

Charlotte cruised past Milwaukee in its season opener, 107-96 as 1 ½-point road favorites. The big men of the Hornets stepped up as Roy Hibbert and Cody Zeller each scored 15 points, while Michael Kidd-Gilchrist paced Charlotte with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Charlotte has sailed OVER the total in 10 of the past 15 road games, but the Hornets own a 4-8 ATS in the past 12 games as a road underdog since February.

      Rockets at Mavericks (-2, 221) – 8:35 PM EST

Not a lot of defense was played by these Texas teams in their openers as each lost on the road. The Mavericks fell short in overtime at Indiana, 130-121, as Dallas hoisted up 48 three-point attempts and 104 shots from the floor. Rick Carlisle’s team won three straight home openers from 2012-2014, but lost its first home game last season to Toronto. Dallas and Houston split four meetings last season, while both games at American Airlines Center finished UNDER the total.

The Rockets failed to grab a victory as a road favorite against the Lakers on Wednesday in a 120-114 setback. Houston put up only 43 points in the second half after a 71-point output in the first half, even though James Harden scored a game-high 34 points and dished out 17 assists. The Rockets have covered nine of their last 15 regular season games in the road underdog role, while winning outright as an away ‘dog at Dallas last December, 100-96.

      Lakers at Jazz (-8 ½, 201 ½) – 9:05 PM EST

The Lakers rallied past the Rockets, 120-114 at Staples Center as six-point underdogs to kick off the Luke Walton era as head coach. Jordan Clarkson scored 25 points off the bench for Los Angeles, while the Lakers shot 50% from the floor. The Lakers struggled against the Jazz last season by losing three of four matchups, but erased a 15-point deficit in the season finale at Staples Center as Kobe Bryant put up 60 points in his final game in a Los Angeles uniform in a 101-96 triumph.

The Jazz couldn’t hold on to a six-point lead in the final minutes of a season opening loss at Portland on Tuesday, 113-104. Joe Johnson scored 27 second half points against the Blazers, while Rodney Hood contributed 26 points for Utah, who played without Gordon Hayward and Derrick Favors. Hayward remains sidelined with a finger injury, while Favors is questionable with a knee injury. Utah is in the midst of a rough stretch with upcoming games against the Spurs (twice) and Clippers over the next week. The Jazz have struggled to cover numbers as a home favorite since last February by compiling a 5-7 ATS mark in this role.

      Warriors (-10, 219 ½) at Pelicans – 9:35 PM EST

The debut of Kevin Durant in a Golden State uniform didn’t work out too well for the Warriors, who were blown out by the Spurs on Tuesday, 129-100 as 8 ½-point favorites. Durant did his part in his first game as a Warrior, scoring a team-high 27 points, but Golden State shot 7-of-33 from three-point range. Golden State has won seven straight meetings against New Orleans since the 2015 playoffs, including a three-game sweep last season.

Anthony Davis took honors for the top individual performance on opening night by scoring 50 points and pulling down 16 rebounds in New Orleans’ 107-102 home setback to Denver. The Pelicans will likely lean on Davis all season after Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson bolted to Houston in the offseason. New Orleans had its ups and downs as a home underdog last season by posting a 10-9 ATS record, while the Pelicans hope to avoid another poor start after beginning 2015 with a 1-11 mark.

Former Celtics first-round draft pick joining Bulls
          October 27, 2016

CHICAGO (AP) Former Boston Celtics first-round draft pick R.J. Hunter appears set to join the Chicago Bulls.

He had a locker with his nameplate before Chicago's season opener against Boston, though the Bulls had not announced the move as of Thursday evening.

The 28th pick in the 2015 draft, Hunter was let go by Boston earlier this week. The Georgia State product averaged 2.7 points in 36 games as a rookie for the Celtics last season.

Kevin Garnett joining TNT as a weekly contributor
          October 28, 2016

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) It didn't take long for Kevin Garnett to find work after retirement.

The 15-time All-Star has a multiyear agreement with Turner Sports to join the network's wildly popular NBA coverage team. Turner says Garnett will serve as a contributor to the coverage, appearing weekly throughout the season from a stand-alone set to provide insight and commentary on the league.

Garnett retired this month after 21 seasons in the league. More than 13 were spent in Minnesota. He also won a championship with the Boston Celtics.

Though he didn't grant as many interviews later in his career, Garnett was well known throughout the league for his intelligence, candor and insight when he did make himself available to the media. That should make him a perfect fit working alongside Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O'Neal at TNT.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Russell Westbrook had 51 points and a triple-double and scored the winning points in the Oklahoma City Thunder's 113-110 overtime victory over the Phoenix Suns on Friday night.

According to the Thunder, it was the first 50-point triple-double since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had one in 1975. Westbrook finished with 13 rebounds and 10 assists and took a career-high 44 shots.

Westbrook made a layup to put the Thunder up a point with 7.6 seconds remaining. Phoenix's Devin Booker missed a layup and Westbrook was fouled. Westbrook scored his 50th and 51st points at the free-throw line with 3.5 seconds remaining. Booker missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

Westbrook has 38 career triple-doubles. He scored 39 points in the second half and overtime.

T.J. Warren had a career-high 30 points for the Suns.

                          WARRIORS 122, PELICANS 114

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Kevin Durant scored 30 points, Klay Thompson added 28 and Golden State bounced back emphatically from a surprising season-opening loss.

After scoring only six points on five shot attempts in the first half, Stephen Curry asserted himself more with an array of inside and deep shots to finish with 23 points, including a momentum-swinging 8-0 run by himself in the third quarter. Durant also had 17 rebounds.

Anthony Davis, who scored 50 points in New Orleans' season-opening loss, finished with 45 points and 17 rebounds against Golden State, but the Pelicans struggled to trim their deficit below double digits for much of the final quarter.

Tim Frazier scored a career-high 21 points and added 10 assists for New Orleans. Lance Stephenson and Dante Cunningham each scored 15 points.

                          CAVALIERS 94, RAPTORS 91

TORONTO (AP) - Kyrie Irving had 26 points and LeBron James scored 21, helping Cleveland hold off DeMar DeRozan and Toronto.

DeRozan had 32 points for Toronto in the first of four games scheduled between last season's Eastern Conference finalists. Cleveland beat Toronto in six games on its way to winning the franchise's first NBA championship.

Kevin Love had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavs. Toronto's Jonas Valanciunas had his second straight double-double to open the season with 10 points and 17 rebounds, while Cleveland's Tristan Thompson had his first of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

                          HORNETS 97, HEAT 91

MIAMI (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 24 points to lead six players in double figures and Charlotte erased a 19-point deficit in the second half.

Jeremy Lamb scored 16 points for the Hornets, who lost a first-round series in seven games to Miami last season - albeit a very different looking Miami. Nic Batum and Marco Belinelli each scored 12 points for Charlotte.

Hassan Whiteside led Miami with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Goran Dragic scored 14 points and Dion Waiters added 13 for the Heat, who lost a home opener for the first time in nine years.

                          ROCKETS 106, MAVERICKS 98

DALLAS (AP) - Trevor Ariza scored 27 points, James Harden had 26 and Houston beat Dallas with Dirk Nowitzki missing from the Mavericks' home opener.

Nowitzki didn't play for just the second time in 19 home openers with Dallas. The 38-year-old had a stomach ailment bad enough that coach Rick Carlisle wasn't sure he would make the trip to Houston for the Rockets' home opener Sunday.

Harrison Barnes, playing his first home game for the Mavericks after signing a max contract in the summer, had a career-high 31 points.

                          JAZZ 96, LAKERS 89

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - George Hill scored 23 points, Rudy Gobert had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Utah won its home opener.

The Jazz used a 16-1 run spanning halftime to take an 11-point lead, but the Lakers closed the third quarter on a 22-11 run - highlighted by Tarik Black's put-backs and Lou Williams' 3 - to take a 65-64 lead.

The Jazz trailed by four midway in the fourth quarter when Hill's 3-pointer sparked an 11-0 run for an 83-76 lead. Utah led the rest of the way.

Jazz forward Derrick Favors returned from a knee injury that kept him out for most of the preseason and the season opener. He finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Teammate Rodney Hood added 15.

Williams led the Lakers with 17 points.

                          NETS 103, PACERS 94

NEW YORK (AP) - Jeremy Lin had 21 points and just missed a triple-double in his Brooklyn home debut, Brook Lopez scored 25 and the Nets got their first victory.

Lin finished with nine rebounds and nine assists, drawing some delirious cheers the way he briefly did during his run of Linsanity last time he played in New York, with the Knicks in 2012.

Sean Kilpatrick hit consecutive 3-pointers during the decisive fourth-quarter surge as the Nets gave new coach Kenny Atkinson his first victory, not far from where the Northport native grew up.

                          PISTONS 108, MAGIC 82

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) - Andre Drummond had 12 points and 20 rebounds, helping Detroit rout Orlando in what might have been the final home opener for the Pistons at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Pistons owner Tom Gores confirmed before the game the team is close on a deal to move downtown next season.

Tobias Harris scored 18 points for the Pistons, and Marcus Morris added 17. Ish Smith had 16 points and eight assists.

Aaron Gordon led the Magic with 17 points.

                            Saturday’s six-pack

Some college football trends to ponder…….

                            — Underdogs are 5-2-1 vs spread in last 8 Kansas State-Iowa State games.

                            — Favorites covered four of last five Stanford-Arizona games.

                            — Home side won eight of last nine Clemson-Florida State games.

                            — Georgia is 2-7-1 vs spread in last 10 games as an underdog.

                            — Ohio State is 11-4 vs spread in games off a SU loss.

                            — Underdogs covered five of last six Tennessee-South Carolina games.

Saturday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

                            13) I’d be curious to know the winning %age of fantasy football teams that own various star players; for example, on November 3, 2013, Nick Foles threw seven TDs in a game for Philly against the Raiders in Oakland. Seven TDs; it would be good to have Foles on your fantasy team, right?

Foles was on my team that year, but we lost that week; I’d be curious to know what %age of fantasy teams that owned Foles lost that week? Stuff like this interests me.

                            12) Jimmer Fredette made a comment in an article this week that he wasn’t highly recruited coming out of Glens Falls HS in upstate NY. I live 45 miles south of Glens Falls; I’m not sure why he said that, because I remember watching Jimmer play down in Florida in AAU Nationals and I was talking with a St John’s assistant and they loved Jimmer.

There was a school of thought amongst some coaches that because Fredette’s family is Mormon, he was signed and sealed for BYU. Maybe fewer teams offered him a scholarship because of that, but everyone wanted him, believe me. Jimmer is playing in the Chinese pro league this year, by the way.

                            11) In Game 2 of the 1980 World Series, Steve Carlton threw 159 pitches in a 6-4 loss to the Royals. 159 freakin’ pitches; in eight innings, Carlton allowed 10 hits, walked six, struck out 10.

If that happened today, how long before the manager/pitching coach were either fired by the owner or sued by the player’s agent (or both)?

                            10) If you’ve been to Las Vegas, there is a strip-**** like gift shop on the corner of Sahara and Las Vegas Blvd; you’ve seen shots of it on TV. The two acres that shop sits on recently sold for $50M; it is very close to the Stratosphere, across the Strip from the SLS Hotel.

$50M for that area; makes you wonder if another hotel will be built there soon. A new hotel is opening in that area in early December; totally Asian-themed and geared towards attracting the 200,000+ people who fly from China to Las Vegas each year.

                            9) ESPNU was doing ACC Media Day while I typed this up; in one segment they had Miami coach Jim Larranaga on, asking him what restaurants he goes to in Miami, silly stuff.

Then they had Roy Williams and Mike Krzyzewski on in separate segments and they are diagramming offenses on a telestrator like they’re too good to be asked the silly stuff. Why can’t they can’t ask those two where they eat in Chapel Hill/Durham?

The lower tier ACC coaches (BC, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest) were lucky to even get on air.

                            8) Eagles’ coach Doug Pederson played 10 years in the NFL, but started only 17 games, all in 1999-2000. First four years he was in the NFL? No starts. Last four years? No starts. He was 2-7 as a starter for the ’99 Eagles, 1-7 for the ’00 Browns.

Best coaches weren’t always the best players. Playing? Coaching? Two different skills.

                            7) Cleveland Cavaliers’ NBA championship rings are really, really big. They look like you’d get carpal tunnel if you wore one for too long.

                            6) Speaking of the Cavs, JR Smith looks like the happiest person in America, like he put one over on the authorities and he and everyone else knows it. He is making $12.8M to stand on the wing and jack jumpers whenever Lebron gets him the ball. It is good to be trusted by the King.

                            5) Tampa Bay Bucs’ OC Todd Monken was head coach at Southern Miss the last three years; he did a good job building up the USM program, but jumped to the NFL this year. I’d love to know if he is enjoying himself, if not having to recruit anymore is worth not being the boss.

                            4) 36-year old Steve Blake still hopes to make it back to the NBA to continue his long career, but for now, he is playing pro ball in Australia.

                            3) Singer Tim McGraw has a white Mercedes convertible with license plate “NYMTS69”. His dad was Tug McGraw, the terrific relief pitcher who pitched for both the Mets and Phillies.

                            2) Los Angeles Rams are 3-0 this season when they have 2+ takeaways, 0-4 when they do not.

1— I mention this now and then, but lot of football coaches are gypsies; here is where Giant coach Ben McAdoo’s journey took him, before he landed in the NFL:

                            2001- Michigan State, 2002- Fairfield, 2003- Pitt, 2004- Akron, 2005- Stanford

Five years, five jobs, five different states. Tough way to make a living.
