        • Seattle moves into 8th place in WNBA playoff standings
          August 31, 2016

SEATTLE (AP) Jewell Loyd scored 23 points, Breanna Stewart added 17 points and 12 rebounds and the Seattle Storm beat the Dallas Wings 78-66 on Wednesday night to move into eighth place in the WNBA playoff standings.

The Storm led by 15 in the first half but Dallas opened the third quarter on a 10-2 run, capped by Odyssey Sims' baseline jumper, to pull to 43-40. Plenette Pierson sank a 3-pointer to tie it at 52-all late in the third quarter.

Dallas outscored Seattle 24-13 in the third and pulled to 62-61 midway through the fourth. But Loyd hit a long jumper and after Aerial Powers missed a 3-pointer, Stewart made a bank shot to extend Seattle's lead to 70-63 with 2:46 remaining.

Sue Bird added 13 points and Crystal Langhorne had 12 points for Seattle (11-16), which is ranked eighth in the AP power poll.

Pierson scored 19 points and Skylar Diggins added 10 points for 11th-ranked Dallas (9-19). The Wings have lost nine straight games.

            • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

              — Nationals have scored 105 1st-inning runs this year, most in MLB. Boston is next, with 96.

              — Steelers claimed QB Zach Mettenberger off waivers from San Diego; they lost Bruce Gradkowski (hamstring).

              — Toronto catcher Russell Martin has 21 RBI in his last 15 games.

              — Orioles added OFs Drew Stubbs, Michael Bourn in deals yesterday.

              — Thoughts, prayers to Craig Sager, who got his third bone marrow transplant Wednesday. Very tough man.

              — Vikings re-signed QB Brad Sorensen; he will back up Joel Stave tonite against the Rams. Unsure if Minnesota will add a veteran QB later on.

              **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

              13) NFL rosters have to be cut from 75 to 53 players this weekend; that’s 704 players losing their jobs in a few days. Lot of tough decisions; players cut from better teams will find their way to lesser teams, but the end result will be a lot of guys ending their football dreams and having to find a new career. Tough time for players and coaches alike.

              12) Minnesota is going to miss Teddy Bridgewater, but they still have a good defense and there’s this: Vikings attempted 28.4 passes per game LY, fewest in NFL. Shaun Hill is 36 and immobile, so defenses will stack the box against Adrian Peterson and dare Hill to beat them with his arm.

              11) The first commercial airplane flight from this country to Cuba in over 50 years took place this week. It has been so long, last time it happened, the passengers flew on a propeller plane.

              10) Canadian Football League has nine teams, so on this holiday weekend, the schedule gets weird; Toronto Argonauts played at home Wednesday night, play again Monday in Hamilton.

              9) Miami Marlins have a rule than a season ticket holder cannot re-sell more than 30% of their game tickets; they refused to sell season tickets to a fan who had previously sold more than that. Marlins are not exactly fan-friendly, especially considering the fans’ taxes paid for the domed stadium they play in.

              8) In wake of Tony Romo’s injury, Dallas Cowboys went from 16-1 to 25-1 in Las Vegas to win the Super Bowl; they had been -3.5 over the Giants next week, but now game is at pick ’em, with Giants expected to be favored by kickoff.

Vikings had been -3 at Tennessee; they’re now a 1-point favorite.

              7) Rumors out of LA had the A’s, Cubs as the two major league teams not represented at Tim Tebow’s baseball workout Tuesday. Whole thing was documented ad nauseum on the Interweb, so why bother going?

              6) I don’t get people criticizing Tebow for trying baseball; if he isn’t good enough, they tell him to take a hike. If he is good enough, then some team has itself a bargain and a lot of free publicity. Whats wrong with that?

              5) Read some articles this summer about Cuban defector Yulieski Gurriel and how great a hitter he is, then Houston gave him $40M+ to sign, so I was eager to add him to my fantasy team. After watching him play a few games now and I know it is still early, but I’m nervous about him and I ain’t playing him $40M+. We’ll see how this goes.

              4) Today is September 1; not fond of college football articles predicting which coaches will be fired this season. Good Lord; let a guy lose a game or two before you start replacing him. Writers need to be more creative and find something more interesting to write about.

              3) Texas Rangers are 80-54 this season, but if you bet them in the first five innings, they’re only 58-57-19, so they’ve been excellent late in games, winning lot of close ones.

              2) A’s traded Coco Crisp to Cleveland for a low-level minor leaguer; there was lot of tension in Oakland recently because Crisp had next year’s $13M option kick in if he played in 130+ games this year, but no way was Oakland letting that happen, and Crisp spoke out publicly against it. A’s reward him for seven years of good service by trading him to a contender.

1– RIP Harry Fujiwara, 82. Better known as Mr Fuji on WWE telecasts, he teamed with Prof. Toru Tanaka as one of the best tag team combinations. Managed by the Grand Wizard of Wrestling, these two scoundrels would cheat by throwing ceremonial salt into their opponents’ eyes.

              Good entertainment. RIP, sir.

                  • Preview: Liberty (19-8) at Fever (12-14)
                    Date: September 01, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The Indiana Fever found their groove in July, winning five of six ahead of the Olympic break - highlighted by an impressive 82-70 road victory over the Eastern Conference-leading New York Liberty.

The Fever have come out of the break ice cold, however, and have dropped back-to-back home games by double digits. They'll try to end that streak Thursday when the Liberty visit Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

New York (19-8) has clinched a playoff berth and sits in third in the league standings, behind the Los Angeles Sparks and Minnesota Lynx. The Liberty, the league's leading rebounding team, have won seven of nine -including an 84-77 road victory over the San Antonio Stars in their first game back from the month-long break.

Star forward Tina Charles is a leading MVP candidate and is coming off a 15-point, 10-rebound performance against San Antonio, her league-high 15th double-double. Charles is second in the league scoring, averaging 21.0 points per game, and first in rebounding (9.7).

Charles had a big night in her last game against Indiana, scoring 25 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. But Indiana forward Lynetta Kizer hit 10-of-14 shots and finished 21 points, and the Fever hit seven 3-pointers to upend the Liberty.

New York had won the two previous meetings with the Fever this season, but has lost seven of 10 against Indiana overall.

The Fever (12-14) came out listless in the loss to Phoenix on Tuesday and didn't score a field goal late in the first quarter. They should have been motivated, after getting blown off the court by the Washington Mystics, 92-69, on Saturday. But they weren't, leaving players and coaches scratching their heads.

"I don't really know what's going on," Indiana center Erlana Larkins told the Indianapolis Star after Tuesday's loss to Phoenix. "We don't even know what's going on right now. We just know that today we got better in the defensive department. The offense is still taking a hit."

Indiana is averaging 80.0 points per game, but has been held to less than 70 in back-to-back defeats.

                    • Preview: Sparks (21-5) at Stars (6-20)
                      Date: September 01, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

What is going on with the Los Angeles Sparks? That might be the biggest question in the WNBA heading down the final stretch of the regular season.

The Sparks won their first 11 games, dominated throughout the first three months of the season and entered the Olympic break with the best record in the league. But things have changed.

Out of nowhere, Los Angeles returned from the Olympic break with back-to-back loses. The Sparks will try to snap out of that funk Thursday when they travel to face the last-place San Antonio Stars.

The Stars (6-20) went into the tank shortly after leading scorer Kayla McBride was lost for the season with a foot injury in early July. San Antonio is 1-7 since McBride went down and is coming off of an 89-62 blowout loss to the Connecticut Sun.

The Stars rank 12th in points per game and 11th in assists per game. The Sparks held the Stars to 61 points in back-to-back wins in early June and have beaten the Stars in five straight games overall.

Los Angeles' recent struggles have not impacted the play of forward Nneka Ogwumike, who is among the league leaders in points and rebounds.

Turnovers have been a major issue during Los Angeles' recent struggles.

The Sparks turned the ball over 21 times in Sunday's 70-66 loss to Phoenix, which dropped Los Angeles out of first place and into second behind the Minnesota Lynx.

Candace Parker had 25 points and 13 rebounds, but the turnovers were too much to overcome for the Sparks. Los Angeles committed 17 turnovers in a loss to Seattle in its first game back after the monthlong Olympic break.

Los Angeles brought in reinforcements this week with the signing of veteran forward Sandrine Gruda.

"Sandrine adds another layer of experience and leadership to our deep roster," Sparks executive vice president and general manager Penny Toler said in a release announcing the acquisition. "She was an integral part of our team in 2014 and we look forward to her being able to come in and have an impact through the final regular-season push and into the playoffs."

                          • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

                            — UNLV added a 4-star forward from Florida last night who is eligible right now; Troy Baxter Jr de-committed from South Florida because of NCAA-related issues. Good get for the Rebels.

                            — Wake Forest 7, Tulane 3– Thank the Lord this wasn’t on TV.

                            — Over last 20 years, St Mary’s is 2-11 in WCC tourney vs Gonzaga, 14-4 in all other tourney games.

                            — St John’s is 4-12 in its last 16 Big East tourney games, 0-5 the last five years- all the games are played on their home court. Oy.

                            — Mariners’ manager Scott Servais was the Cubs’ catcher in the first game played at Turner Field in 1997. Why are the Braves getting another stadium so soon?

                            — South Carolina 13, Vanderbilt 10– Gamecocks got a FG with 0:35 left for the win. Carolina coach Will Muschamp looks a lot like former NHL player/coach Mike Milbury.

                            **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts after a busy Thursday

                            13) Tennessee 20, Appalachian State 13 OT– Nine years ago, App State shocked the college football world by winning at Michigan; they were a I-AA team back then, but they’re I-A now, in the Sun Belt. ASU was 11-2 LY, beat Wyoming 31-13, so they’re a program on the rise……..

…..but they screwed this game up. ASU coaches didn’t use their last timeout when they were driving at the end of regulation. Big mistake. App State also has a freshman kicker, who missed a PAT and a makeable field goal- they should do well in the Sun Belt this year.

Tennessee GOT SO LUCKY in this game. QB Dobbs, who for a senior hasn’t improved much, fumbled at the goal line in OT, but a teammate recovered for the eventual winning TD. When the Vols have to play against similar athletes in the SEC, hard to envision them as the best team.

                            12) Tennessee OC Mike DeBord quit a head coaching job at Central Michigan to join Butch Jones in Knoxville; he was on the Michigan staff when the Wolverines lost to Appalachian State. he had to be having deja vu up in the booth, but Tennessee survives; people in Knoxville can exhale.

                            11) How great is Charles Barkley? He recently had a hip replaced and had not been cleared to travel by his doctor, but when he heard Craig Sager’s wife was sick and couldn’t be with him in the hospital, Barkley flew from Phoenix to Houston to be with Sager, who got his third bone marrow transplant this week. That is a real friend.

                            10) There are seven NFL special teams coaches who have been in their current job longer than the head coach they work for.

                            9) Chris Sale has started 142 major league games; Wednesday was first time he didn’t strike a hitter out in the first four innings.

                            8) Mets 2B Neil Walker needs a back operation, is out for the year.

                            7) NFL Draft next April is in Philadelphia; now the Eagles’ job this fall is to make sure they don’t draft too early in the first round.

                            6) In 7th inning of Arizona-SF game Wednesday afternoon, three birds stationed themselves in between the mound and home plate, munching on some grass. Luckily for them, no one crushed one of them with a batted ball. Never saw that before.

                            5) Why in God’s name is there a team from Nebraska in the Big East? Not to mention Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Cincinnati. Makes no sense.

                            4) I read on the Interweb today that Beyoncé Knowles is obsessed with the number 4; not really sure why, but could it be she was a Biff Pocoroba fan?

                            3) Ken Whisenhunt led the Cardinals to the Super Bowl as its coach, but went 3-20 as coach of the Titans and was fired after seven games LY. November 6, Tennessee visits the Chargers, where Whisenhunt is the Bolts’ offensive coordinator.

                            2) Two similar situations in Week 1; Dennis Allen is the Saints’ new DC; he was the Oakland HC from 2012-14, going 8-28 before he was fired after four games in ’14. Raiders visit the Superdome next Sunday.

Former Falcons’ coach Mike Smith is Tampa Bay’s new DC; Bucs visit the Georgia Dome next week. Funny how stuff like this happens in Week 1; schedule makers like to have their fun.

1– There were 176 replay reversals in the NFL last year, 2nd-most ever. There were 415 replay reviews, the fewest since 2011; remember, not all reviews are challenges. Turnovers/scoring plays are often reviewed.
