    • Preview: Dream (8-5) at Stars (2-11)
      Date: June 25, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The San Antonio Stars will try to end their four game-losing streak -- the longest in the WNBA -- when they play host to the slumping Atlanta Dream on Saturday night.

The Stars (2-11) have the worst record in the league. The Dream (8-5) are coming off a 90-79 double-overtime home loss to the New York Liberty on Wednesday. They have lost four of their past six games.

"I'm not too worried about it," Atlanta forward Sancho Lyttle said after the latest defeat. "We've been through this before. Last year, the year before, we always start off really, really good, then we go through a drought and then we pick it back up and make it into the playoffs. Right now, I'm not really too worried."

San Antonio is the lowest-scoring team in the league at 74.3 points per game and it ranks 11th out of 12 teams in field-goal percentage (40.9), just a tenth of a point ahead of Dallas. Guard Kayla McBride averages 17.8 points per game, but nobody else on the team averages more than 10.7.

The Dream are led by forward Angel McCoughtry, who has reached at least 20 points in eight of the past 11 games. She averages a team-high 19.8 points. Guard Tiffany Hayes is at 14.8 per game.

Lyttle returned Wednesday after missing four games while playing for Spain in an Olympic qualifying tournament in France. She had 11 points, 11 rebounds and tied her career high with eight steals.

Atlanta center Elizabeth Williams, acquired in an offseason trade, leads the WNBA with 2.5 blocks per game.

What has hurt the Dream is their 3-point shooting. They have made just 25.1 percent of their attempts from behind the arc, the worst mark in the league.

This is the second meeting of the season between these teams. Atlanta won 73-63 in overtime in San Antonio in the season opener on May 14. McBride scored a game-high 24 points.

The Dream are starting a three-game road trip.

      • Preview: Fever (5-9) at Wings (7-7)
        Date: June 25, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

The Dallas Wings, with a full and healthy roster, are riding a four-game winning streak heading into Saturday night's home game against the Indiana Fever.

The Wings (7-7) have averaged 100.5 points per game during their winning streak. Indiana (5-9) has lost five of its past six games.

Earlier this month, Dallas point guard Skylar Diggins returned from a knee injury and forward Glory Johnson made her season debut after serving a seven-game suspension for a 2015 domestic violence incident with then-partner Brittney Griner of the Phoenix Mercury.

Diggins, a 2014 WNBA All-Star who suffered a torn ACL last season, is averaging 12.9 points and 3.1 assists. She played in the 2016 season opener but wasn't quite ready and sat for the next seven games.

Johnson, a two-time All-Star, is averaging 11.3 points and 7.9 rebounds. She has three double-doubles in seven games, including one Thursday night in a 97-90 overtime home win over San Antonio. The Wings squandered a 16-point second-half lead in that one.

"Having a lead and sustaining a lead is pretty tough," Dallas coach Fred Williams said on WNBA.com. "We've got to stay focused. I wasn't pleased with how we let that lead slip away. But in the end, we made some great plays defensively and made some key shots all around from all of our players.

"We just have to build on this game and learn from this game, learn how to finish out regulation."

The Wings' winning streak came after they had lost six consecutive games. They look much more formidable now in the Eastern Conference with Diggins and Johnson getting comfortable in a rotation that includes guard Odyssey Sims (16.3 points per game) and wing Karima Christmas (14.1).

Dallas is shooting a league-worst 40.8 percent from the field but is hitting its stride offensively.

Indiana is the second-lowest scoring team in the WNBA at 77.5 points per game and is coming off a 76-62 loss at Washington on Wednesday night. Forward Tamika Catchings (12.9 points per game) and guard Tiffany Mitchell (11.9) are the only Fever players averaging double-digit points.

Dallas won the first meeting of the season, 90-79, at Indiana in the season opener for both teams.

          • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Brewers 6, Nationals 5-- Washington has lost seven games in a row.

-- PGA Tour cancelled the tournament at Greenbrier in West Virginia due to heavy flooding in the West Virginia area. Tourney was scheduled for July 7-10.

-- adidas is pressuring clients Jason Day/Dustin Johnson to confirm for the Rio Olympics; there are worries that most of the big-name guys will be no shows.

-- Indians 6, Tigers 0-- Tribe hasn't lost since Cavaliers won the NBA title.

-- Pete Rose was (finally) inducted into the Reds' Hall of Fame last night.

-- Blue Jays 10, White Sox 8-- Pale Hose became third team ever to hit seven HRs in one game and still lose.

            **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

            13) Strength coach for Alabama's football team makes $525,000 a year, more than 19 Division I-A head coaches. Strength coach is an extremely important job-- he is the only coach allowed to coach the players year-round.

            12) John Calipari has coached 22 players who left school for the NBA after one year of college; all 22 were drafted in the first round.

            11) Green Bay Packers turned a $75M profit last year. Thats million, with an M.

            10) You see a number like that, and it irritates me that NFL teams do not suit up an emergency #3 QB every Sunday. Say the starting QB gets hurt on the first play of the game-- then they have to be super cautious with the backup, since there is no one else left to QB if the backup gets hurt. It dimishes the quality of the product.

How much could a #3 QB make? $1M? For an NFL team, thats pocket change.

            9) Of the 32 current NFL head coaches, Adam Gaze/Ben McAdoo are only two who didn't play college football.

            8) Red Sox use several TV analysts, with Jerry Remy the main one, but the best one is Dennis Eckersley is the best one-- he is smart, fair, and speaks his mind.

            7) Dodgers are a weird team; they have a huge payroll, but a shaky pitching rotation and the other night, Yasiel Puig batted 8th-- not your ordinary #8 hitter.

            6) George Springer is the first player since 1900 to hit a grand slam and a triple in the first inning of a major league game.

            5) Mets signed Jose Reyes, but they're set at SS with Asdrubal Cabrera-- will they put him at 2B and have Neil Walker play third?

            4) Nine college hoop teams will be playing exhibition games in the Bahamas in August; UNLV, Wake Forest, Akron, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, FAU, Wyoming and Missouri State. Trips like that are a big help.

            3) Aptly-named 3-point gunner Max Hooper, who played for Oakland last year and took 257 3-pointers LY but no 2-point shots, has signed on with Oklahoma City to play on their summer league team.

            2) Listened to Doug Gottlieb's talk show for a while on Friday, on CBS Sports Network; he is smart and opinionated. ESPN screwed up bigtime letting him get away.

            1) There are guys who make a living in pro sports now as "mental skills coaches", which is a euphemism for "sports psychologist", except you don't need a degree in psychology to be a mental skills coach.

“It’s just about playing in the present. Not worrying about things I can’t control, and focusing on the things I can, obviously." Thats what Ben Simmons had to say about his mental skills coaching. Interesting way to make a living

The two highest-scoring players in the WNBA will meet when the Phoenix Mercury play at the New York Liberty on Sunday.

New York forward Tina Charles is having an MVP-like season, averaging a league-best 22.0 points per game, to go along with team-high averages of 10.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists. The Liberty (10-4) lead the Eastern Conference.

"We're playing great as a team," Charles told the MSG Networks. "More importantly, we're falling in love with the process of winning. For us, it's about playing team ball ... everybody on this team is being a star within their role. I think it's really sweet with what we're doing."

The Mercury haven't been as successful, entering the game at Madison Square Garden with a 5-9 mark, but guard Diana Taurasi is still at the top of her game in her 12th WNBA season.

Taurasi scored 27 points in a 91-79 victory at the Washington Mystics on Friday night, becoming the fastest player in league history to reach 7,000 points. Taurasi, who has 7,006 points, upped her season average to 20.3, trailing only Charles.

Center Brittney Griner added 22 points in Friday night's win, making 10 of 15 shots from the field. The Mercury can score, averaging a league-high 87.1 points per game, but they allow a league-worst 88.4, which has been a significant factor in a so-far disappointing season.

New York, meanwhile, has been one of hottest teams in the league, winning six games in a row, its longest winning streak since 2010. This marks the first time the Liberty have been 10-4 since 2001.

Charles has 10 double-doubles in 14 games and has scored more than 20 in six consecutive games. While wearing a face mask to protect a broken nose, she had 21 points and 13 rebounds in Friday night's 80-79 win over the visiting Chicago Sky.

Liberty guard Rebecca Allen made her 2016 debut Friday. She scored eight points and made both of her 3-point attempts in 12 minutes. Allen played in just two games last season before suffering a knee injury, and she had been training with an Australian team until joining the Liberty this week.

                • Preview: Lynx (13-1) at Mystics (7-8)
                  Date: June 26, 2016 4:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Lynx are about to find out what kind of team it is after a loss.

The Lynx, who set an WNBA-record by winning their first 13 games to start the season, suffered their first defeat Friday night, falling 94-76 at home to the Los Angeles Sparks.

Minnesota will try to bounce back Sunday at the Washington Mystics (7-8).

Earlier in the week, the Lynx had won at Los Angeles in a battle of then-unbeaten teams.

"I thought they played with that chip on their shoulder and determination," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said on WNBA.com after the loss, talking about the Sparks. "Perhaps we had a bit of a hangover."

The Lynx will need to clear their heads going against a Washington team that has been hot, although it has struggled at the Verizon Center. The Mystics lost their first five games at home, won two, and then surprisingly lost 91-79 to the Phoenix Mercury on Friday night.

Overall, though, Washington has still won five of its past seven games.

One of the Mystics' losses came at home to Minnesota, which claimed an 83-76 victory on June 11. Minnesota shot 49.2 percent in that game and placed four players in double figures, led by 21 points from guard Seimone Augustus.

Forward Maya Moore leads the Lynx, averaging 19.4 points per game, to go with 4.8 assists per game. She scored 28 points in Friday's rematch with the Sparks, shaking off a left thigh bruise suffered in Tuesday's fourth quarter.

Center Sylvia Fowles averages 13.8 points and 8.7 rebounds for Minnesota. Augustus is the team's third double-digit scorer at 11.2 per game.

For Washington, guard Tayler Hill leads the way with 15.7 points per game, with center Emma Meesseman close behind at 14.8. Guard Natasha Cloud will try to stay hot after making 5 of 7 3-point attempts en route to a career-high 18 points in the loss to Phoenix.

Minnesota built its 13-0 record on efficient team play and defense, neither of which was present Friday night. The Lynx allowed 56 points in the second half to the Sparks and committed 18 turnovers.

                  • Preview: Sun (3-11) at Sparks (12-1)
                    Date: June 26, 2016 5:00 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Sparks are coming off their biggest victory of the season as they prepare to entertain the struggling Connecticut Sun on Sunday at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles (12-1) won its first 11 games before falling to Minnesota, which won its first 13 games to set a WNBA record. Minnesota beat Los Angeles 72-69 on June 21 at Staples Center, knocking the Sparks from the ranks of the unbeaten.

The Sparks returned the favor 72 hours later at Target Center in Minneapolis, winning 94-76 to hand the Lynx their first loss of the season.

Kristi Toliver scored a season-high 25 points and tied her career high with seven 3-pointers in the Sparks' victory over the Lynx. Nneka Ogwumike posted 20 points and nine rebounds for Los Angeles, which ended the game with a 21-6 run in the final 4:22.

Connecticut (3-11) is making the second stop on a four-game road trip that will take the Sun to Phoenix and Dallas next week. Before embarking on the trip, the Sun posted a 93-90 victory over San Antonio at home on June 19, but Connecticut suffered a 98-81 loss at Seattle on Friday.

Alex Bentley scored 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting from the field in the loss to Seattle. Shekinna Stricklen came off the bench to score 12 points for Connecticut, which trailed by 19 at the break after surrendering 56 first-half points.

Seattle shot 61.4 percent from the floor against Connecticut while holding the Sun to 37.6 percent shooting.

The Sparks are fourth in the WNBA in scoring and first in scoring defense, limiting opponents to 71.8 points per game. The Sun are ninth in scoring and 10th in points allowed, giving up an average of 87.9 points.

Ogwumike is 10th in the WNBA in scoring at 17.2 points per game and leads the league in field-goal percentage at 68.9 percent. Toliver is second in 3-point shooting at 49.4 percent.

Bentley leads Connecticut in scoring, averaging 13.5 points per game. Jasmine Thomas averages 11.4 points and 4.7 assists.

Los Angeles is beginning a six-game homestand. The Sparks then play nine in a row on the road.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Erlana Larkins scored a career-high 19 points and the Indiana Fever held to beat Dallas 92-87 on Saturday night, snapping the Wings' winning streak at four games.

The Fever had a 19-9 start the third quarter that stretched their four-point halftime lead to 71-57. The sixth-ranked Wings (7-8) answered with a 10-2 run to end the quarter within six and rallied again late in the fourth quarter when Aerial Powers cut it to 90-87, finishing a contested layup off the glass with 52 seconds to go.

January, Tamika Catchings and Erica Wheeler added 15 points each for Indiana. Karima Christmas led the Wings with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Odyssey Sims had 18 points, and Glory Johnson 15.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Kayla McBride scored 11 of her 28 points in the fourth quarter, including nine straight in the final 4:13, to lead San Antonio past Atlanta.

McBride hit a 3-pointer to break a 63-all tie with 4:13 left, made a pair of free throws at the 1:21 mark for a 70-67 lead and made two more from the line with 19.9 seconds remaining to make it 72-69.

After Angel McCoughtry's 3-pointer barely grazed the rim for Atlanta, Alex Montgomery grabbed the rebound and iced its for the Stars (3-11) with a free throw with 2.4 seconds left.

McCoughtry finished with 23 points for the Dream (8-6).

-- A man named Ronald McDonald was shot Thursday at a Sonic Drive-In in Lumberton, NC. Really, he was. Mr McDonald is said to be OK, but he was upset that the hospital didn't serve breakfast 24 hours a day.

-- Kris Bryant had three HRs, two doubles last nite, coming with three total bases of the all-time record (19) for total bases in a game, held by Sean Green.

-- Roberto Clemente used a bat that was 36 inches long, weighed 39 ounces.

-- When he was 30 years old, Harrison Ford was a carpenter, not an actor.

-- Morehead State gave hoop coach Sean Woods a contract extension thru 2020.

-- There were 52 homers hit in major leagues Sunday, most of any day this year.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: NFL knowledge to ponder......

                          13) Falcons-- Missed playoffs last three years, going 18-30, despite starting 5-0 LY. Were last in NFL in sacks (19) LY, 5-5 in games decided by less than seven points. .

                          12) Bills-- Had only 21 sacks LY (31st) so Rex Ryan brought his brother Rob in to help with the defense. Led NFL in rushing yards, but were #28 in passing yards.

                          11) Panthers-- Will be hard to re-create +20 turnover margin; they were 5-0 in games decided by less than 7 points. Have four games west of Rockies this season. Getting Kelvin Benjamin back at WR provides some upside.

                          10) Bengals-- Made playoffs last five years, but its been 25 years since they last won a playoff game. Were +11 in turnovers, allowed 2nd-least points, but will have their third offensive coordinator in last four years this season.

                          9) Cowboys-- Had four QBs throw 98+ passes LY; they lost 12 of last 14 games after a 2-0 start. Their -22 turnover margin was worst in the NFL.

                          8) Packers-- Five of McCarthy's seven playoff losses came on the last play of game. Started 6-0, stumbled to 4-6 finish, scoring 8-13 points in last two games- they get Jordy Nelson back from injury at WR this year.

                          7) Texans-- O'Brien is "QB guru" but Texans used nine QBs (starting seven) in his first two years in Houston. Only two of their 16 games LY were decided by less than seven points- they should have five new starters on offense this year.

                          6) Colts-- Luck missed nine games LY; Indy was 29th in rushing yards, 22nd passing, 28th in total yards- they drafted four offensive linemen. Also have their third OC in last five seasons.

                          5) Vikings-- Minnesota is 24-9 vs spread under Zimmer, 15-5 as an underdog; they were 4th in rushing yards, 31st in passing yards- their fired their offensive line coach.

                          4) Patriots-- Went 3-5 in last eight games after a 10-0 start; Garoppolo threw four passes all year-- now he has to start the first four games, with Brady suspended. Patriots had 49 sacks LY, second-most in NFL.

                          3) Giants-- Lost six of last seven games, but kept both coordinators and fired a future Hall of Fame head coach. Went 6-10 LY despite a +7 turnover ratio; they allowed an average of 420 yards/game (last) and gave up 40.7 ppg in last three games.

                          2) Saints-- 31st in rushing yards allowed, 31st in passing yards, 31st in total yards, last in points allowed. Brees threw for 4,870 yards but is 37 now. Only had five draft picks this year-- two of them were offensive players.

                          1) Steelers-- Roethlisberger is 34 now; Pitt was #3 in passing yards, T4 in scoring, despite Big Ben missing five games. Had 48 sacks under new DC Butler, 3rd in NFL.

League Betting Notes (Monday, June 20 through Sunday, June 26)

-- Underdogs went 12-3 against the spread (ATS)

-- Home teams posted a 9-6 SU record

-- Road teams posted a 9-6 ATS record

                            -- The 'over' went 8-7

                            Team Betting Notes

-- The 'over' edged out the 'under' again this week in WNBA play, but it wasn't as dominant as in the past. Still, the 'over' is 54-34 (61.4%) this season, and the 'under' has managed to go only .500 one time through the first seven weeks.

-- Dallas (7-8) is a hard team to figure out. They swept a home-and-home against the Mercury June 18-21, but stumbled at home against Indiana (6-9) despite being a six-point favorite at home. One thing that is consistent for the Wings is the 'over, as it cashed for an eighth straight game Saturday. Over the past 13 games the 'over' is 12-1 for the Wings.

-- San Antonio (3-11) has had difficulty putting together a strong effort for a full game, but they did just that in a 73-69 victory over Atlanta (8-4) as five-point 'dogs. The Stars have suddenly pieced it together, at least against the number, covering four straight heading into their game in D.C. Wednesday.

-- The Dream started off on fire this season, opening 6-1 SU and 5-1 ATS in their first six games. However, Atlanta has dropped three in a row straight up, and they're a dismal 1-7 ATS over the past eight since that 5-1 ATS run to open.

-- Seattle (5-9) rolled to a 98-81 win over the Sun, easily covering a 7 1/2-point number to snap an 0-3 ATS skid. Two of Seattle's five victories have come at the expense of the Sun. Unfortunately, the two sides do not meet again in the regular season.

-- The Sun have had difficulty against the spread lately, failing to cover in four straight after posting a respectable 5-2 ATS run from May 26-June 12.

-- Connecticut (3-12) suffered a loss at the hands of Los Angeles (13-1), which was not surprising in the least. However, the Sun was able to slap the brakes on an 0-4 ATS skid, covering for the first time since June 12 in Atlanta. Connecticut is actually a respectable 3-3-1 ATS in seven road games this season.

-- After opening the season 8-2 ATS through the first 10 outings, the Sparks are just 1-3 ATS over the past four heading into their game Tuesday at home against the Wings.

-- All of a sudden Minnesota (13-2) is in a bit of a tailspin. Spitting a home-and-home with L.A. was not terribly surprising, as the Lynx were due for a loss. But their 24-point shellacking at the hands of Washington (8-8) was extemely shocking. The Lynx have followed up their 13-game WNBA record win streak to start a season with back-to-back losses, and they have failed to cover in two straight for the first time this season.

                              • Preview: Dream (8-6) at Storm (5-9)
                                Date: June 28, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

The Atlanta Dream will attempt to end a three-game losing streak when they visit the Seattle Storm on Tuesday at KeyArena.

Atlanta (8-6) has lost the top spot in the WNBA's Eastern Conference and now sits in second place behind the New York Liberty, which had won six in a row before falling to Phoenix in overtime on Sunday. The Dream are coming off a 73-69 loss at San Antonio on Saturday.

Angel McCoughtry scored 23 points in the loss to the Stars. Layshia Clarendon added 13 points for the Dream, who were held to 40 percent shooting and made just 3-of-11 from 3-point range.

Seattle (5-9), which is fifth in the Western Conference, has lost three in a row and five of six before beating Connecticut 98-81 on Friday.

Breanna Stewart made five 3-pointers and tied her career high with 29 points in the win over the Sun. She also posted nine rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocked shots.

Sue Bird and Jewel Loyd scored 19 points apiece for Seattle, which erupted for 56 points in the opening half, the team's highest-scoring half of the season. The Storm shot a sizzling 61.4 percent from the field and made 8-of-18 from beyond the arc.

The Storm announced on Saturday that it had finalized an agreement with the Phoenix Mercury to bring veteran guard Noelle Quinn back to Seattle for the rights to Angel Robinson. Quinn, who played for Seattle in 2013 and 2014, has averaged 5.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists over her career.

"Noelle will add versatility, depth and valuable experience to our backcourt," said Alisha Valvanis, the team's president and general manager. "With 10 years of experience competing in the WNBA and her familiarity with (head coach) Jenny Boucek, she will have an immediate impact on our team. We're looking forward to having Noelle back in Seattle."

The Storm also announced that they have signed 6-foot-5 center Krystal Thomas, who last played in the WNBA in 2014. The team waived rookie guard Blake Dietrick and center Markeisha Gatling.
