  • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Golden State Warriors were 73-9 in regular season, 15-9 in playoffs.

-- Braves' 1B Freddie Freeman was 17-31 last week with eight RBI in seven games.

-- Trevor Story swung and missed at a pitch last night that hit him in the shoulder; I've never seen that happen before. He hit a homer on the next pitch.

-- ESPN had to be thrilled that Steven Strasburg (back) got scratched from last nite's start; they had promoted Strasburg vs Kershaw national TV game all weekend.

-- Tigers 8, Mariners 7 (12)-- Melvin Upton hit a walkoff homer for Detroit.

-- Rockies 5, Marlins 3-- Game set MLB record for most runs scored in a game, if all the runs came on solo home runs. Reynolds and Ozuna both homered twice.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

    13) Awkward Christmas Department: On June 20, 1997, the Cincinnati Reds called Aaron Boone up to make his major league debut; to make room on the roster for him, the Reds sent Bret Boone back to the minor leagues. His brother.

    12) Donald Trump fired his campaign manager Monday; someday there will be a movie made about all this and it will be wildly entertaining, although I'm not sure if there is an actor out there who could pull off portraying Trump.

The Republican convention in Cleveland should be momentous; its setting up to be quite a year on Lake Erie, with the Cavaliers winning their first title, the Indians being in first place and the chaos of the Republican party headed their way next month.

    11) Speaking of which, Cavaliers' team plane took a detour to Las Vegas on its way home from Oakand Sunday night. Team did some partyng at the Wynn Casino, before getting back to Ohio Monday afternoon. Winning is fun.

    10) Senators failed to pass legislation that would have made it illegal for suspected terrorists to buy guns; If these nitwits don't tighten gun laws, they should all be fired on the spot, every one of them-- they're expensive and totally bleeping useless.

Seriously, who votes against a law that says suspected terrorists can't buy guns? .

    9) Pretty cool scene in Chicago last night; Pitt's new basketball coach Kevin Stallings was at Wrigley Field, watching his son Jacob catch for the Pirates in his MLB debut. Young Stallings played his college baseball at noth Carolina; he was born in Lawrence, kansas when his dad was an assistant coach for the Jayhawks.

    8) Matt Holliday's brother Josh coaches Oklahoma State's baseball team, which is in the College World Series for first time since 1999; their father Tom was the coach back then. In between, the Cowboys were coached by Brett Anderson's dad; had to be a little awkward when Anderson, Matt Holliday were teammates in Oakland in 2009.

    7) Stanford's football schedule is hard this year; its three non-league games are Notre Dame/Kansas State/Rice and the Rice game is the last game of the year. Cardinal has to play USC-UCLA-Washington on consecutive Saturdays in September.

    6) Have to admit, since daytime TV during the week is so awful, sometimes I wind up watching re-runs of NFL games on NFL Network. I often spend NFL Sundays, watching 5-6 games on one screen, so i don't hear much of hat is being said, so it is interesting to listen to what is being said, seeing if I can pick up anything of note.

    5) Three women dressed as nuns were at Phillies game Monday afternoon, taking selfies, drinking Miller Lite and later dancing on the Phillies dugout during the 7th inning stretch with the Philly Phanatic. Turns out they are actresses in a play about nuns and were in costume to promote the play.

    4) There is an actor named Oliver Platt; he's been in a lot of stuff-- he was a lawyer in the John Grisham movie, A Time to Kill. Platt was actually related to Princess Di-- his grandmother and Princess Di's grandfather were brother/sister.

    3) Staten Island-Brooklyn opened the NY-Penn League season last week by playing a 20-inning game, then played extra innings again the next night. Players who just got drafted aren't used to hitting with wood bats-- its not as much fun, so you wind up with a lot of low-scoring games at that level.

    2) Mets scored total of two runs in Jacob deGrom's last four starts; he hasn't won a game since April and his body language is beginning to look that way.

    1) Wouldn't you love to know what David Blatt was thinking Sunday night, while the Cavaliers won their first NBA title, after firing Blatt this season, despite the team having a 30-11 record. Winning an NBA title with a neophyte head coach increases a notion that, for better or worse, the NBA is so much of a player-driven league.

      • WNBA Betting Recap - 6/6-6/12
        June 14, 2016

League Betting Notes (Monday, June 6 through Sunday, June 12)

-- Favorites went 10-3 straight up (SU)

-- Favorites went 7-6 against the spread (ATS)

-- Road teams posted a 7-6 SU record

-- Road teams posted a 8-5 ATS record

        -- The 'over' went 10-3

        Team Betting Notes

        -- The 'over'
continues to hit for Washington (4-7), as the Mystics are a perfect 11-0 so far this season. They have allowed at least 76 points in each of thier games, and 79 or more in 10 of his 11 outings. The Mystics are also 3-0 ATS over the past three outings after starting out just 2-6 ATS over the first eight.

-- Connecticut (2-8) covered each of their games in the past week, and despite a rough overall win-loss record they are a solid 4-1 ATS over the past five outings. They'll face the high-octane and defensively-challenged Mystics in Tuesday's game.

        -- Los Angeles (9-0)
remained perfect in the win-loss column with two wins and covers this week. They're 7-2 ATS this season, and their past three victories are by an average of 20.0 points per game. However, as double-digit favorites, the Sparks are just 1-2 ATS.

        -- Minnesota (10-0)
kept their overall record unblemished with three victories in the past week. They were just 1-2 ATS during the span, but the 'over' connected in all three outings. They're on a collision course with the Sparks, with a home-and-home set to begin June 21 in L.A.

-- Dallas (3-6) has been having tremendous difficulty straight-up and against the number lately. They started the season 3-1 SU/2-2 ATS, but they have now dropped five in a row and failed to cover in their past six. One thing that is consistent about the Wings has been the 'over', hitting in six of the past seven.

        -- Seattle (4-6)
won their second road games of the season, surprising Indiana (4-6) despite being six-point underdogs. The Fever are having their troubles lately, going 1-3 SU/ATS over the past four outings. It won't get any easier for them, either, as they travel to Minnesota Tuesday.

        -- San Antonio (1-7)
aren't winning, and lately they haven't covered the spread, either. After opening 3-1-1 ATS through the first five games, the Stars have failed to cover each of their past three.

-- Chicago (5-5) had their four-game cover streak snapped in their loss at Phoenix (4-6). The Mercury opened 0-4 SU/ATS, but they have won back-to-back games and covered three in a row.

          • Preview: Lynx (12-0) at Sparks (11-0)
            Date: June 21, 2016 3:30 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Sparks host the Minnesota Lynx in a Tuesday matinee battle between two teams off to record starts.

Both teams have set records for the most consecutive wins to start a season. It's the first time in WNBA history that multiple teams have won more than seven games to start their seasons.

The defending-champion Lynx (12-0) lead the league in scoring (87.8) and free-throw shooting (84.8 percent). Minnesota is outscoring opponents by more than 13 points per game.

The Sparks (11-0) lead the league in field-goal percentage (49.8), 3-point shooting (37.9 percent), assists (21.1 per game), points allowed (71.4) and are second in scoring (86.9). They are beating teams by an average of more than 15 points per game.

The two Western Conference powers met seven times last season, with the Lynx winning five times and two of three during their playoff series.

Minnesota is coming off a 96-84 road win over the Seattle Storm on Sunday night. Maya Moore flirted with a triple-double in the win, scoring 18 points, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out eight assists. The Lynx outrebounded the Storm 35-23 and tied a franchise record with 30 assists.

"We're excited to play this next game," Moore told reporters after the win over the Storm.

Moore is averaging 19.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.0 steals to the lead the Lynx. Sylvia Fowles and Seimone Augustus also are averaging double figures in points.

The Sparks took care of the Phoenix Mercury 77-71 on Friday night, behind 24 points and 11 rebounds from Candace Parker. Los Angeles is 5-0 at home this season.

Forward Nneka Ogwumkie leads the Sparks in scoring (17.6) and rebounds (8.8). In a June 12 win over the Dallas Wings, Ogwumike went 12-for-12 from the field and seven-for-seven from the foul line. She also added 10 rebounds. It was the first time in WNBA history that a player made at least 10 field goals with no misses, made all of her free throw attempts without a miss and notched a double-double.

Parker is averaging 16.5 points and 7.4 rebounds for the Sparks.

The two teams will meet again Friday in Minnesota.

            • Preview: Mercury (4-8) at Wings (5-7)
              Date: June 21, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

After playing a triple-overtime thriller on Saturday, the Dallas Wings and Phoenix Mercury will clash for the second time in 72 hours on Tuesday at College Park Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

Dallas (5-7) defeated the Seattle Storm 88-79 on Thursday to end a six-game losing streak. The Wings followed that win with a 117-111 triple-overtime victory over the Mercury on Saturday after trailing by 17 in the third quarter.

"I think everybody is just playing with heart," guard/forward Karima Christmas said following the win over Phoenix. "It speaks to what we can do together as a team. We're never going to quit. We were down and we're always going to keep trying to fight back. I was really proud of the team."

Phoenix (4-8) has dropped two in a row and remains winless on the road this season. The Mercury suffered a 77-71 setback to the unbeaten Los Angeles Sparks on Friday before losing at home to Dallas.

Skylar Diggins had a season-high 27 points in Dallas' victory over Phoenix and Plenette Pierson, Odyssey Sims and Christmas added 18 points apiece. Glory Johnson came off the bench to post 15 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.

DeWanna Bonner came off the bench to post 38 points for Phoenix, tying her career high. Penny Taylor scored 21 points, Candice Dupree had 19 and Brittney Griner put up 11 points and nine rebounds.

The game was the first matchup between Johnson and Griner since their acrimonious divorce. Both were arrested on domestic violence charges in April 2015. They got married the following month, but Griner filed papers to annul the marriage less than a month later.

Griner and Johnson tangled up in the third quarter of Saturday's game. Griner was called for a foul and Johnson was assessed a technical foul for pulling her down. With 10 seconds left in regulation and her team trailing by two, Johnson scored on a putback over Griner, sending the game to overtime.

"We should have put it away in regulation," Phoenix head coach Sandy Brondello said. "When you're up by 17, you have to actually focus more, not less. Anyone can beat anyone in this league. We didn't close it out."

              • Preview: Stars (2-9) at Sky (5-7)
                Date: June 21, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

Two struggling teams will try to end their losing streaks on Tuesday when the San Antonio Stars visit the Chicago Sky at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.

San Antonio (2-9) has lost two in a row and six of its last seven to reside in last place in the Western Conference, one game behind the Seattle Storm and 9 1/2 behind first-place Minnesota. The Stars are winless on the road this season.

Chicago (5-7) has followed a four-game winning streak by dropping three in a row, falling to Phoenix, Los Angeles and Atlanta. The Sky, who are 2-2 at home this season, are fourth in the Eastern Conference but still within striking distance, three games behind first-place Atlanta.

San Antonio is coming off a 93-90 loss to Connecticut. Kayla McBride scored 26 points, but the Stars lost despite shooting 51.6 percent from the field and making 10-of-17 from 3-point range.

Chicago is coming off a 101-97 overtime loss to Atlanta. Elena Delle Donne had 26 points in the loss.

San Antonio and Chicago have already met once this season. The Stars rallied from a 15-point deficit to beat the Sky 79-78 on May 27 in San Antonio. Haley Peters scored each of her 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead the comeback. She made a 3-pointer in the final minute that proved to be the game winner.

Delle Donne had 27 points and nine rebounds in that contest. She is fifth in the WNBA in scoring at 18.4 points per game.

San Antonio's Moriah Jefferson is third in the league in 3-point shooting at 45.5 percent. Jefferson averaged 15.7 points per contest in the last three games, scoring 19 against Seattle, 15 versus Indiana and 13 against Connecticut.

                • WNBA showdown: Lynx (12-0) visit Sparks (11-0) on Tuesday
                  June 20, 2016

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) When the 12-0 Minnesota Lynx visit the 11-0 Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday, the WNBA will have a bit of history on its hands.

It will mark the first time that two unbeaten teams from the WNBA, NBA, NFL, MLB, or NHL have met with each team having at least 10 wins with no losses and no ties.

The starts for the Lynx and Sparks are crucial in a season that will test players even more because of the Olympics in August. The meeting also gives the WNBA a prime platform to showcase its two best teams just two days after the NBA season wrapped up.

Lynx star Maya Moore says she is excited to play in a regular-season game that will get so much attention.

                        • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- This is the first time a full moon happened on the first day of sunmer since 1967.

-- Texas Rangers are 16-4 in one-run games this season.

-- Since May 13, Mariners are 3-10 in games where winning run scores from the 7th inning on-- over is 12-2-1 in their last fifteen series openers.

-- Jay points out that the last time an SEC team didn't win a game in the College World Series was in 2007.

-- Cal-Hawai'i are opening college football season in Australia; Georgia Tech will be playing Boston College in Ireland.

-- Orioles played at home Sunday, flew to Texas for a makeup game Monday, then back to Baltimore for Tuesday night's game with San Diego.

                          **********

                          Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings.......

                          13) New pet peeve: the phrase "maintenance day", a euphemism for "day off" in the modern world of baseball. Playing baseball is not that grueling, players do not need a day off every week (other than catchers, obviously).

Marcell Ozuna is hotter than hell, but he sat Tuesday because Ichiro Suzuki now has to play a couple days a week. Marlins must be making a fortune selling Ichiro gear in Japan as he approaches 3,000 major league hits. Christian Yelich sat Monday, Ozuna sat last night, despite his hitting two home runs on Monday. Oy.

                          12) When did the major leagues become more like Little League, where everyone has to play? Our society is getting soft as hell, and if I sound old saying that, so be it.

                          11) Dirk Nowtizki opted out of his contract with Dallas, turning down $8.7M to play with the Mavericks next year. Most everyone thinks he will re-sign with Dallas on a multi-year deal, but you never know in this world.

It should be noted here that Dallas hasn't been out of the first round of the playoffs since they won their first NBA title five years ago.

                          10) NHL teams are trading marginal players for draft picks rather than lose them in the upcoming expansion draft.

                          9) Skal Labissiere played 15.8 mpg for Kentucky LY, scoring 6.6 ppg, starting half the Wildcats' 36 games as a freshman.

Domantas Sabonis played 31.8 mpg for Gonzaga LY, scoring 17.6 ppg; he played 74 college games in his two years for the Bulldogs-- his dad is one of the greatest big men in European history.

If Labissiere is drafted before Sabonis tomorrow night, as many mock drafts suggest, I'm going to mock the NBA system, which values potential over performance.

                          8) The latest Big Ten media-rights contract will earn the league an average of $440 million annually over the next six years, with FOX and ESPN sharing the rights.

                          7) Miami Marlins' pitcher Paul Clemens lived in Miami for a while as a kid; his dad was the head of the FBI in South Florida.

                          6) Auburn, Michigan both have only two home football games before Halloween; on October 8 and October 29 for both teams. Not very courageous scheduling.

                          5) VCU's band director got the boot after they school couldn't come to a contract agreement with him. How much money can a band director make?

                          4) Yasmani Grandal's 3-run homer in bottom of 8th inning ruined a fine pitching performance by Tanner Roark. LA handed the Nationals their 4th loss in a row, 3-2.

                          3) Mets pushed back Noah Syndergaard's start Tuesday to line him up to pitch against division rival Washington down the road, then Bartolo Colon got KO'd by a line drive hit by the first batter of the game, but the Mets won anyway, 2-1.

                          2) For the next 40 days (until July 31), trade speculation will run rampant; Angels are in trouble, even with Mike Trout in CF. How do they raise their talent level? There has been suggestion of a Trout-to-Washington deal, with Nationals sending its three best minor leaguers to Anaheim-- Lucas Giolito, Trea Turner, Victor Robles.

                          1) If the baseball playoffs started today:
                          NL: Nationals-Cubs-Giants. Wild Cards: Dodgers-Mets
AL: Orioles-Indians-Rangers. Wild Cards: Royals-Red Sox
