      • Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- They drew 4,595 fans to Opening Night of NY-Penn League in Troy last night; an Eastern League game in Altoona drew 5,152. Minor league ball is affordable fun.

-- Colorado Rockies' starting pitchers have an ERA that is 2+ runs higher at home than on the road. Not sure how they'll ever fix that.

-- Tigers' OF JD Martinez broke his elbow Wednesday night when he ran into the wall chasing a double. Looked like a harmless play, but he is out 4-6 weeks.

-- Kolten Wong came back from AAA and is now a centerfielder; Cardinals have so many middle infielders, they made Wong an outfielder.

-- Bengals/Vikings will have joint practices for a couple days this summer; think that really helps, to practice against other teams instead of your teammates every day.

-- Michael Saunders had three homers, eight RBI for the Blue Jays last night.

        **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

        13) NBA's salary cap will be around $94M next year, higher than expected, so the league is doing really well. Next time Steph Curry's wife wants to bitch about things, , maybe she should remember that Mr Curry brings home a huge chunk of that money, so she should keep her comments to herself.

        12) I went to the eye doctor Friday and my eyes are dilated when I leave; luckily I have sunglasses in the car, which was huge or I might've been there until the sun went down. As I'm leaving, I'm thinking, this might be the most dangerous place in America to drive, an eye doctor's parking lot. Luckily, got home without incident.

        11) Miami Marlins are skipping a Jose Fernandez start now and then, to preserve him as best they can, since he had an arm operation not that long ago. If the Marlins are a contender, will they ask Terry Collins to leave Fernandez off the All-Star team? If he is skipping starts now and then, why should he pitch in an exhibition game?

        10) Young man named Derryck Thornton scored 7.1 ppg LY while playing 26 mpg for Duke, but he transferred to USC this week. Kid left high school a year early to plug a hole in Duke's rotation, then bolted after one year. Interesting.

        9) Jose Altuve walked 33 times in 671 plate appearances last year; this year, he has walked 35 times in 269 PAs. He is still an aggressive hitter, too.

        8) The mayor of Washington DC was on MSNBC yesterday, saying she wants DC to be the 51st state. Washington DC has balanced its budget 21 years in a row, which is very impressive, but if they're doing so well, why do they want to change?

        7) Julio Urias struck out eight in five shutout innings last night, but the Dodgers are keeping a lid on his pitches this year, so he came out after 85 pitches. Home fans did not have a positive reaction when Milwaukee scored twice in the sixth inning.

        6) Every person with the Pittsburgh Penguins gets a day with the Stanley Cup; you can basically do anything you want with it. One of the years Scotty Bowman won a Cup as a head coach, he put the thing on a lawn chair in his backyard and anyone who walked by could come behind the house and have their picture taken with it. One of the really cool traditions in sports.

        5) Owner of the Chicago Cubs has done a great job making Wrigley Field look nicer and more modern; the team is doing great, so the stands are always full and that is always a help, but the owner has definitely created a positive atmosphere.

        4) Pirates got shut out at Wrigley yesterday; they were the last team in majors to get shut out this season.

        3) Nationals are 23-13 on the road; 0-4 in Wrigley, 23-9 everywhere else.

        2) It makes no sense that Dodger games are blacked out in Las Vegas; who thought that was a good idea? Baseball should step in and reverse that. Makes no sense.

        1) Six games in the NBA Finals; Warriors have scored 610 points, Cavaliers have scored 610 points. ABC will get huge ratings if Game 7 is a competitive one- so far in the Finals, the games haven't been very close.

          • Preview: Dream (8-3) at Mystics (5-7)
            Date: June 18, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The Washington Mystics have been hard to figure.

They have gone 5-2 on the road but will be looking for their first home victory of the WNBA season when they play host to the Atlanta Dream at Verizon Center on Saturday.

Washington, 0-5 at home, defeated the Dream 86-79 in Atlanta on June 5.

"It's going to take our best game," Mystics forward Emma Meesseman told The Washington Post about ending the team's home losing streak. "We have to play the type of game we played in Atlanta, and better. More blockouts, being aggressive, attack the basket. Just everything trying to be as perfect as possible."

Atlanta entered Friday night's home game against Chicago leading the Eastern Division with a 7-3 record.

Washington had won three of its past four games, with Meesseman at the center of the action. She is the reigning Eastern Conference Player of the Week, and the fourth-year pro scored a team-high 23 points on Tuesday night in a 109-106 triple-overtime victory at the Connecticut Sun.

Better health has helped the Mystics recently, although starting point guard Tierra Ruffin-Pratt has missed practice this week to rest a sprained ankle. Her availability for Saturday was in question.

Washington forward LaToya Sanders, a staunch defender who this week helped Turkey clinch a spot in the Olympics in the FIBA qualifying tournament in France, should rejoin the team next week.

Atlanta forward Angel McCoughtry scored a game-high 28 points when the teams met earlier this month. She entered Friday night's game averaging 20.3 points, third best in the WNBA behind New York forward Tina Charles (21.6) and Phoenix guard Diana Taurasi (21.4).

Saturday's game at Washington will mark the only time this season that Atlanta will play on consecutive days. That follows a four-game homestand.

The Dream will be without forward Sancho Lyttle (6.8 points, 8.9 rebounds per game) for the third consecutive game because of Olympic qualifying in France. She scored 24 points on Friday to lead Spain to victory and a clinching berth. She is expected to return Wednesday against New York.

Washington is 0-5 at home for the first time since 1999.

            • Preview: Wings (4-7) at Mercury (4-7)
              Date: June 18, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

The Phoenix Mercury will play host to the Dallas Wings in the first game of a home-and-home set on Saturday night at Talking Stick Arena Resort in Phoenix, Ariz.

Phoenix (4-7) had won two in a row and four of six before losing to unbeaten Los Angeles on Friday night.

The Mercury trailed by only four points with 3:56 remaining after being down by nine early in the fourth quarter, but they couldn't complete the comeback.

Candice Dupree scored 16 points in the loss. Diana Taurasi had 15 points but made just 5 of 14 shots from the field, including 1 of 8 from 3-point range.

Dallas (4-7) beat the Seattle Storm 88-79 on Thursday to snap a six-game losing streak. The Wings won three of their first four games before losing their next six, including 97-73 to Los Angeles.

Karima Christmas and Odyssey Sims scored 17 points apiece in the victory over Seattle. Courtney Paris posted her second consecutive double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Wings shot 52.4 percent from the field against the Storm. They also amassed a 35-24 rebounding advantage. Dallas is fifth in the WNBA in rebounding and could have a decided advantage in that department over Phoenix, which ranks 10th.

Sims is 11th in the WNBA in scoring at 15.8 points per game. Paris is second in rebounding, averaging 9.6.

Phoenix is led by Taurasi, who is second in the league in scoring at 20.8 points per game. Penny Taylor is fourth in 3-point shooting (.457). Brittney Griner is fourth in blocked shots (1.9 bpg).

Phoenix has been good offensively this season, ranking fifth in the WNBA in scoring at 84.4 points per game and fifth in shooting at 44.3 percent. Dallas is seventh in scoring at 81.9 points per game and 11th in the 12-team league in field-goal percentage (.399).

Phoenix and Dallas will meet again Tuesday at College Park Center in Arlington, Texas. They will also play each other on July 5 in Arlington and Aug. 26 in Dallas.

                • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- James Shields has now allowed 31 runs in 11 IP in his last four starts.

-- 10 Cincinnati Reds have made their major league debut this year.

-- Patricia Ford was named Miss Georgia; she is a former Weather Channel intern.

-- Mets are 5-17 this season when they do not hit a home run.

-- Stuart Appleby's golf bag weighed in at 36.35 pounds; caddying is tough.

-- Miami Marlins have had five no-hitters, but never had a guy hit for the cycle.

                  **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there

                  13) First of all, Happy Father's Day to all the dads reading this; I was lucky to have a great dad. He passed away last year and I miss him very much, so if your dad is still alive, give him a hug and tell him you love him.

                  12) Get well soon to Michael Lee Aday, aka Meat Loaf; the 68-year old singer collapsed during a show in Edmonton this week. He was released from the hospital and is said to be in good condition now, which is very good news.

                  11) I'm watching NFL Network the other day and a guy is trying to make a big deal out of the fact that the Rams haven't named Jared Goff the #1 QB yet. Oy. It is really hard to be an NFL quarterback; rushing someone into starting can be very stupid.

                  10) Here are the Rams' first four games:
                  @ 49ers, Seahawks, @ Buccaneers, @ Cardinals.

Three road games, three division games. I'm a big fan of easing a guy into being the QB of the future, especially with the Cal offense being lot different than an NFL offense.

                  9) Kurt Warner started nine games for '04 Giants, before prize rookie Eli Manning took over. Giants went 1-7 in Manning starts, scoring 37 points in his first four starts; he was 6-21 in one start, 4-18 in another. Eli has turned out pretty well, but make no mistake about it, he was terrible in his rookie season.

Steve McNair started six games his first two years with Tennessee; he turned out to be a pretty good QB, too. Goff will be fine, but it will take time.

                  8) Brewers-Dodgers game last night was only second game in majors this year where both teams scored in each of the first three innings of the game. Red Sox-Orioles game on June 1 was the first game like that this season.

                  7) Wally Szczerbiak, who is a pretty good basketball analyst these days, predicted that there might not be anyone in this draft class who becomes an NBA All-Star.

                  6) Then there are mock drafts, which are fine if you do one; but once you start having new ones every other day, then you're just screwing around trying to get page views. Anyone can shuffle the top 15 names around; lets stick to one mock per analyst.

                  5) There was something on Twitter about the Warriors flying home after Game 6 and three of their guys are doing homework from online classes, trying to earn their college degrees. Pretty cool that really rich guys still want their degree.

                  4) One of the highlights this weekend was in San Diego, wehre they showed a guy playing ping pong outdoors, while wearing stilts. Don't see that every day.

                  3) If you owned one of the top five picks in the NBA Draft, would you trade it to the Lakers for D'Angelo Russell, after Russell's display of immaturity last year? I'd have to say no; you can't make mistakes when you have a top five pick.

                  2) Clipper coach Doc Rivers has quietly dumped two of his assistant coaches already; when you spend a ton of money on a team and it underachieves, heads will roll.

                  1) A person paid $99,000 for two tickets to tonight's Game 7 in Oakland. Wow.

                        • Preview: Stars (2-8) at Sun (2-10)
                          Date: June 19, 2016 1:00 PM EDT

The Connecticut Sun hosts the San Antonio Stars on Sunday in a battle of two teams looking to turnaround tough starts to the WNBA season.

The Sun has won four straight against San Antonio, including a 72-68 road victory on May 19 in the second game of the season. Kelsey Bone had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Connecticut.

The Sun (2-10) fell 80-72 to the New York Liberty on Thursday, dropping its third straight game. The Sun has lost nine of 10 overall and have not found a rhythm on either end of the court.

Connecticut is 11th in points allowed (86.9) and ninth in points per game (79.8).

The Stars (2-8) are coming off of an 84-75 loss to the Indiana Fever on Friday and are in last place in the Western Conference.

San Antonio leading-scorer Kayla McBride had 21 points in defeat, including a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter that put the Stars up by three.

But San Antonio couldn't withstand a closing run by the Fever.

"If anything, maybe we could have locked in more on defense," San Antonio's Monique Curry said. "But I think perhaps maybe we ran out of gas after working from 13 down and coming back.

"So again, we have to keep ourselves out of holes like that so that we have to extend that extra energy and be able to finish games."

Inconsistent offense has plagued the Stars this season. They rank 12th in points per game (70.7). McBride (17.5 points per game) and Dearica Hamby (10.2 points per game) are the only two Stars averaging in double figures.

Sunday's game kicks off a three-game trip for the young Stars.

"You don't ever want to get too high or too low, especially with such a young team," the Stars' Jayne Appel-Marinelli told reporters after the loss to Indiana.

"You want to be the baseline and be supportive, but also give a little constructive criticism. We're babies. We just got to learn quickly and on the fly. It'll be tough, especially with this road stretch coming up."

Connecticut heads on a three-game trip after Sunday's game.

                            Date: June 19, 2016 2:00 PM EDT

The New York Liberty handed the Indiana Fever their worst loss of the season, a 32-point beat-down on June 3.

Two weeks later, the Eastern Conference contenders meet again on Sunday in Indianapolis.

The Fever (5-7) snapped a three-game slide with an 84-75 victory over San Antonio on Friday, but are still looking to develop some chemistry, after last year's run to the WNBA Finals.

The Fever is 11th in points per game (78.5) and 10th in assists.

Indiana had only 11 assists to the Liberty's 22 in the blowout loss in early June. The Fever shot 32.8 percent from the floor and made only 3-of-20 3-pointers. They scored only nine points in the second quarter and 13 in the fourth.

"Out toughed us, out worked us, out executed us, out efforted us, really kicked our (butt)," Fever coach Stephanie White told reporters after the game. "That's all there is to it. That's all I have to say about that."

White has since announced that this will be her last season with the Fever. She has agreed to become head coach at Vanderbilt after the season.

Indiana veteran Tamika Catchings also has announced that this will be her last season. Catchings is the WNBA's second all-time leading scorer.

The Liberty (7-4) sits in second place in the Eastern Conference, one game behind the Atlanta Dream. They have won three straight games, including an 80-72 victory at Connecticut in their last outing Thursday.

New York leads the WNBA in rebounding, averaging 38.8 boards per game. Veteran forward Tina Charles bolsters the Liberty's front line. She's averaging 21.6 points and 9.4 rebounds, and is among the WNBA leaders in both categories.

Charles had a career-high 32 points in the win over Connecticut, and veteran Swin Cash became the 14th player in WNBA history to reach 5,000 points.

The teams met eight times last season, including in the playoffs. Indiana won six of the eight games.

The Minnesota Lynx will try to extend their WNBA record for consecutive victories to start a season when they visit the Seattle Storm on Sunday at Key Arena in Seattle.

Minnesota (11-0) beat Indiana on Tuesday to break its league record with its 11th consecutive win to start the season. The Los Angeles Sparks (11-0) tied that record with a win over Phoenix on Friday night.

"It's just one of those things that is a result of what we've done since training camp," Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said. "We look up 11 games into it and say, 'Things are going pretty well for the first third of the season.' It's nice to have."

Maya Moore scored 16 points to lead five Minnesota players in double figures in the win over Indiana. Seimone Augustus scored 12 points and Sylvia Fowles had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Seattle (4-8) has lost two in a row and four of its last five. The Storm is coming off an 88-79 loss to the Dallas Wings. Breanna Stewart had 29 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots, but it wasn't enough.

Moore is fourth in the WNBA in scoring at 19.8 points per game and fourth in assists, averaging 4.7 assists per game. Fowles is fourth in the league in field-goal percentage, shooting 58.2 percent.

Seattle is led by Jewell Loyd, who is eighth in the WNBA in scoring, averaging 16.8 points per game. Stewart ranks 10th in scoring at 16.3 points and leads the league in rebounding at 9.8 per game.

Minnesota and Seattle have met once this year. The Lynx handed the Storm a 78-71 loss on May 22 in Seattle.

In that game, Moore had 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Alysha Clark had 20 points and seven rebounds, and Stewart finished with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Another win over Seattle would set up a battle of unbeaten teams when Minnesota visits Los Angeles on Tuesday. The Lynx and Sparks will meet again Friday at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
