  • Preview: Sparks (8-0) at Wings (3-5)
    Date: June 11, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Sparks will try to tie their franchise record for most consecutive wins to start a season when they play at the Dallas Wings on Saturday night.

    The Sparks (8-0) started 9-0 in 2001 and 2003.

Dallas (3-5) has lost three consecutive games and is 1-3 at home at College Park Center in Arlington, Texas, but the Wings have regained the services of forward Glory Johnson, who played her first game since August 2014 on Wednesday night. This will be the first meeting of the season between the teams.

The Sparks rely on the all-around game of center Candace Parker, a three-time WNBA All-Star. She is averaging a team-high 16.8 points per game, leads in assists at 4.1 per game and is second in rebounding at 6.9. She has made 14 of 31 3-point attempts.

Forward Nneka Ogwumike has been a force, averaging 15.6 points and 8.8 rebounds.

"We have to guard them all the way through," Wings coach Fred Williams said. "Candace Parker is a player who can develop a lot of things in the open floor. We just have to try to contain their fast break situations."

The Wings likely will also need to lean on their 3-point shooting to stop the Sparks from getting closer to the league record of 10 consecutive wins to start the season, set by 2012 Minnesota. Dallas attempts more shots from behind the arc than any team in the WNBA (22.8), although it makes only 30.8 percent. The Sparks shoot a league-high 41.8 percent.

Johnson scored 15 points in her return from suspension, stemming from a domestic incident with Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner, to whom she was briefly married. Griner served her suspension last season, but Johnson had to wait because she was sidelined last season while pregnant with twins.

Forward Aerial Powers, a rookie from Michigan State, has led the Wings in scoring in each of the past two games, with 23 at Minnesota and 17 vs. Washington. Guard Odyssey Sims is averaging a team-high 15.0 points per game but has hit only 5 of 28 shots in the past two games

      • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Nolan Ryan threw seven no-hitters, to seven different catchers........

-- Jeff Torborg-- Became a manager when his playing days were done.

-- Art Kusyner-- Starting C Torborg broke his finger two days before this game.

-- Tom Egan-- Like Bob Uecker, a journeyman catcher with a career .200 BA.

-- Ellie Rodriguez-- Was All-Star rep for Royals in their first-ever season.

-- Alan Ashby-- Is now a broadcaster for the Astros.

-- John Russell-- Was Rangers' 3rd-string catcher when he caught the no-hitter.

-- Mike Stanley-- Best hitter of these seven, hit 187 HRs, had a .370 OB%.

        **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

        13) Someone brought this up on Twitter Friday night and it took me a damn hour to unravel the whole thing in my mind:

Vince Carter was drafted by Golden State on June 24, 1988; he was traded later that night to Toronto for Antawn Jamison, but the pick that was used to draft him had already been traded twice, in 1993 and 1994-- the Anfernee Hardaway/Chris Webber deal in '93 and a deal involving Scott Skiles the next year.

In both trades, a pick Golden State later used to draft Todd Fuller (whoops) was also moved with the Carter pick.

        12) Vince Carter scored 23,969 points in his NBA career, earned $165,575,296 in salary; the pick used to select him was traded when he was in 10th and 11th grade.

        11) Barry Bonds was a great, great hitter; he hit 762 HRs, had a career OB% of .444.

Don Mattingly hit .307 in his fine career, with 222 homers, also a great hitter.

But playing isn't coaching; Mattingly is Marlins' manager, Bonds is a hitting coach and neither one of them can fix Giancarlo Stanton, who is going thru one of the worst hitting funks I've ever seen. Its like he has suddenly become Adam Dunn, except he never walks. Stanton is hitting .195 this season. No bueno.

With two strikes on him this season, Stanton is 9-112, with 14 walks, 77 strikeouts. Seeing as they still owe hm $325M or so down the road, they need to have coaches who can fix him, even if that coach wasn't a Hall of Fame player.

        10) White Sox brought up SS prospect Tim Anderson and DFA'd Jimmy Rollins, making them younger, more athletic and probably better.

        9) In Jose Quintana's last 17 losses, White Sox scored a total of 19 runs.

        8) Cavan Biggio, son of the Astros' Hall of Famer, was a 5th-round draft pick of the Blue Jays. That pick was announced by Cavan's older brother, who is an intern in the commissioner's office. There is networking in baseball; your dad is a Hall of Famer, you have a better shot at an internship.

        7) Red Sox have scored 54 more runs than any team in the AL; some credit has to go to hitting coach Chili Davis, who is very underrated. When he was in Oakland, the A's made the playoffs all three years. Probably not a coincidence.

        6) New sliding rules at second base are hurting offenses; you get lot more double plays now, with runners not allowed to do anything remotely aggressive to break up a double play. Reducing contact around home plate probably helped scoring go up.

        5) Golfer Jason Day threw out the first pitch at the Pirates game last night; he is in town for the US Open at Oakmont next week.

        4) Chicago Cubs used a 6th-round pick on Chad Hockin, who is the grandson of the great hitter, the late Harmon Killebrew.

        3) Klay Thompson wore a Dodgers' hat at a Giants' home game last night, normally not the best way to make friends in the Bay Area, but Thompson's brother plays for the Dodgers and if the Warriors win Monday night, it'll all be forgotten, I'm guessing.

        2) CBS made a good move, dumped former referee Mike Carey as its rules expert; Carey wasn't good on TV, although he did improve last year.

        1) I'd like to propose a change to how saves are tracked; the current system just isn't a good yardstick for how closers finish games.

        -- Protect a one-run lead, 3 points. Lose a one-run lead, lose 1 point.
        -- Protect a two-run lead, 2 points. Lose a two-run lead, lose 2 points.
        -- Protect a three-run lead, 1 point. Lose a three-run lead, lose 3 points.

For instance, Huston Street entered the game last night with a 3-0 lead; he blew the lead, so he would lose three points. I think over the course of a season, this point system would be more telling than the current one.

          • Preview: Sun (2-7) at Dream (6-3)
            Date: June 12, 2016 3:00 PM EDT

The Connecticut Sun are coming off their biggest win of a disappointing season. The Atlanta Dream are coming off their worst loss of a surprising season. The two Eastern Conference opponents collide Sunday afternoon at Philips Arena in Atlanta.

Alyssa Thomas' putback with 0.6 of a second left helped the Sun snap a six-game losing streak with a 77-76 win over the Seattle Storm on Friday. Thomas finished with 15 points and nine rebounds. Rookie Morgan Tuck scored a career-high 20 points, including hitting all three of her 3-point shots.

It was the first win for the last-place Sun (2-7) since May 19.

The Dream were blasted 110-78 at home by the Minnesota Lynx on Friday. Atlanta shot just 33.8 percent from the floor and was outscored 64-33 in the second half.

It was the second worst defeat in the Atlanta franchise's history and second straight loss overall for the Dream (6-3). Despite the setback, the Dream remain in first place in the Eastern Conference.

"This is the first time, (for) a team that I truly, truly love and respect this year, that I saw us quit a little bit," Atlanta coach Michael Cooper told reporters after the loss. "That's something we have to address and rectify. You'll see a better effort the next game."

The Dream will be without forward Sancho Lyttle, who is playing in Spain in the 2016 FIBA Olympic women's basketball qualifier. Lyttle, who leads the WNBA in steals and is the Dream's top rebounder, also missed Friday's game against the Sun.

"Sancho is a very high basketball IQ player for us," Cooper said. "She's there for the double teams; she's there for the guards if they get beat. And that's hard to replace."

Atlanta defeated Connecticut 83-77 on June 3 behind 23 points from Tiffany

Hayes and 21 from Angel McCoughtry. Alex Bentley had 16 points for the Sun, who jumped out to an early lead but gave a 13-0 run in the second quarter and never recovered.

The Dream swept all three meetings with the Sun last season and have won the last four overall.

Connecticut is last in the WNBA in free-throw shooting at 69.8 percent. Atlanta isn't much better at 74.5 percent, good for 10th in the league.

            • Preview: Storm (3-6) at Fever (4-5)
              Date: June 12, 2016 6:00 PM EDT

The two top rookie scorers in the WNBA -- Indiana's Tiffany Mitchell and Seattle's Breanna Stewart -- will square off Sunday when the Fever host the Storm at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The two middling teams met June 1, with the Fever outlasting the Storm 85-75 behind a career-high 19 points from Mitchell. Stewart finished with 22 points.

Indiana was up 22 points late in the third quarter and in complete command. The Storm scored the last seven points to make the final score closer than the game actually was. Fever forward Lynett Kizer came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points in 22 minutes.

The Fever have won five straight and nine of 10 against the Storm.

Indiana (4-5) enters Saturday's home game in fourth place in the tight Eastern Conference standings. The Fever are coming off a 73-64 loss to the Chicago Sky.

In only her fourth game back after tearing her meniscus in Game 5 of last year's WNBA Finals, Briann January scored 17 points to lead Indiana against Chicago. January was having a big Finals performance, averaging 15.4 points and 5.4 assists before suffering the injury, which required microfracture surgery.

The Storm (3-6) are in fourth in the Western Conference after a 77-76 loss at Connecticut on Friday. Stewart, who starred at the University of Connecticut, scored 22 points and veteran point guard Sue Bird, who also played collegiately at UConn, had a season-high 24, but Seattle suffered its fourth loss in its last six games.

Stewart got off to a slow start in her return to Connecticut. After receiving a big ovation, she missed her first six shots from the field.

"It was nice to get that UConn fan base excited to have me here," Stewart told reporters after the loss. "It really wasn't a big deal, so if you guys are trying to say that's why I missed shots, that's not why I missed. I just missed."

Stewart is averaging 15.7 points and 10.1 rebounds in her rookie campaign.

Mitchell leads the Fever in scoring at 14.1 points per game. Veteran forward Tamika Catchings, who has announced that this will be her last season, is averaging 10.6 points and 4.7 rebounds.

              • Preview: Sky (5-4) at Mercury (3-6)
                Date: June 12, 2016 6:00 PM EDT

The surging Chicago Sky head to Phoenix to face Diana Taurasi and the up-and-down Mercury on Sunday at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

The Sky opened the season at 1-4 but bounced back with a four-game winning streak. Chicago leads the league in points (86.0) and assists (21.8).

Rookie Imani Boyette posted career highs in points (16) and rebounds (12) in a 73-64 win over the Indiana Fever on Friday. Boyette should be a factor again against the Mercury, who have struggled to rebound this season.

Chicago veteran guard Cappie Pondexter added 10 points and became the seventh player in WNBA history to reach 6,000 career points.

Pondexter was drafted second overall by the Mercury in 2006. She won two championships and was named Finals MVP in 2009 with the Mercury. This is her second season with the Sky.

Reigning MVP Elena Delle Donne is averaging 17.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, both team highs for the Sky, and point guard Jamierra Faulkner leads the WNBA in assists (6.4).

Chicago (5-4) trails first-place Atlanta by one game in the Eastern Conference standings.

Taurasi poured in 31 points, 21 coming in the first half of the Mercury's 90-75 win over San Antonio on Thursday. It was Taurasi's 40th career 30-plus-point performance and her second this season. She is third in the WNBA in scoring, averaging 20.3 points, but her hot start hasn't produced overall success for Phoenix.

The Mercury (3-6) reached the Finals last season without Taurasi and forward Penny Taylor and are considered title contenders again this season. But they've gotten off to an uneven start and sit in seventh in the eight-team Western Conference.

Phoenix is last in the WNBA in points per game and rebounding. Taylor is averaging 13.0 points and 4.4 rebounds.

The Mercury and Sky met in the 2014 WNBA Finals. Phoenix swept the series 3-0.

Chicago is 2-8 in its last 10 trips to Phoenix. The teams split last season's two meetings, with both teams winning on their home court.

                    June 14, 2016

League Betting Notes (Monday, June 6 through Sunday, June 12)

-- Favorites went 10-3 straight up (SU)

-- Favorites went 7-6 against the spread (ATS)

-- Road teams posted a 7-6 SU record

-- Road teams posted a 8-5 ATS record

                    -- The 'over' went 10-3

                    Team Betting Notes

                    -- The 'over'
continues to hit for Washington (4-7), as the Mystics are a perfect 11-0 so far this season. They have allowed at least 76 points in each of thier games, and 79 or more in 10 of his 11 outings. The Mystics are also 3-0 ATS over the past three outings after starting out just 2-6 ATS over the first eight.

-- Connecticut (2-8) covered each of their games in the past week, and despite a rough overall win-loss record they are a solid 4-1 ATS over the past five outings. They'll face the high-octane and defensively-challenged Mystics in Tuesday's game.

-- Los Angeles (9-0) remained perfect in the win-loss column with two wins and covers this week. They're 7-2 ATS this season, and their past three victories are by an average of 20.0 points per game. However, as double-digit favorites, the Sparks are just 1-2 ATS.

-- Minnesota (10-0) kept their overall record unblemished with three victories in the past week. They were just 1-2 ATS during the span, but the 'over' connected in all three outings. They're on a collision course with the Sparks, with a home-and-home set to begin June 21 in L.A.

-- Dallas (3-6) has been having tremendous difficulty straight-up and against the number lately. They started the season 3-1 SU/2-2 ATS, but they have now dropped five in a row and failed to cover in their past six. One thing that is consistent about the Wings has been the 'over', hitting in six of the past seven.

                    -- Seattle (4-6
) won their second road games of the season, surprising Indiana (4-6) despite being six-point underdogs. The Fever are having their troubles lately, going 1-3 SU/ATS over the past four outings. It won't get any easier for them, either, as they travel to Minnesota Tuesday.

-- San Antonio (1-7) aren't winning, and lately they haven't covered the spread, either. After opening 3-1-1 ATS through the first five games, the Stars have failed to cover each of their past three.

                    -- Chicago (5-5)
had their four-game cover streak snapped in their loss at Phoenix (4-6). The Mercury opened 0-4 SU/ATS, but they have won back-to-back games and covered three in a row.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Happy Armadillo Day, everyone......

Hard to believe it has been fifteen years since I started this little endeavor; so much has changed since then, both around here and in the world. It was three months before the 9/11 attacks-- I thought about shuttering this site when 9/11 happened and the world took a week off to mourn that fateful day. I'm glad I didn't.

So no list today, just a few thoughts on things that crossed my mind today:

-- Do things you enjoy; life is too short not to.
-- Be nice to people, especially those who don't deserve it.
-- If there are things you've always wanted to do but haven't done, find a way to do them. Don't put them off. When your time comes, you don't want any regrets.
-- Learning to deal with failure and learning to accept praise are equally important.

-- Laughter relaxes the muscles in your body.
-- You never really lose until you stop trying.
-- There is no such thing as bad pizza, though some is better than others.
-- Making someone else smile should make you smile, too.
-- Tell people close to you that you love them, before it is too late.

I've been really lucky in my life; I've been to a World Series game, was in St Louis the day the Rams won an NFC title, was an assistant coach on two state championship high school basketball teams. I was raised in a positive environment and taught things that have served me well in life.

I've made friends from people reading this site and then sending me an e-mail. You never have enough friends in this world.

As we start Year 16 here, there is a lot more to do. Hopefully this site will finally get a new design soon that is long overdue. Maybe I'll even post pictures someday.

Thanks to you the readers; it means a lot that you log in every day. Enjoy.

                          Date: June 14, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

If there is one team that is happy to be on the road, it's the WNBA's Washington Mystics.

They are 0-5 at home but will look to improve on their 4-2 road mark Tuesday night when they play at the Eastern Conference cellar-dwelling Connecticut Sun.

The Sun (2-8) have one victory in five tries at Mohegan Sun Arena.

The Mystics are fifth in the six-team Eastern Conference but are coming off a competitive game against the undefeated Minnesota Lynx (10-0) on Saturday. Washington led by two points at halftime before Minnesota took control with a 17-0 run en route to an 83-76 victory.

"I think it teaches our young team," Mystics guard Tayler Hill said.

"They (the Lynx) showed us that when times get tough and things begin to go on runs, they stay together and make the plays that need to be made. ... So a young team like us has to understand that when times get tough we have to stay together and not separate from each other."

Washington forward Emma Meesseman has been a bright spot and is having the best season of her career. The fourth-year pro was chosen the Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 21.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in games against Dallas and Minnesota, shooting 63.3 percent (19-of-30) from the floor.

Meesseman is averaging 14.8 points and 6.9 rebounds, both career highs.

Hill scored a season-high 24 points and had a career-best seven assists when the Mystics won 84-76 in overtime at Connecticut on May 21. Hill averages a team-best 15.0 points per game.

Sun guard Jasmine Thomas is averaging a team-high and career-best 11.7 points per game and also leads the team with an average of 4.7 assists. Five Connecticut players average at least 9.5 points.

Washington has the youngest roster in the WNBA, with Connecticut fielding the second youngest team. The Sun are next to last in scoring at 77.9 points per game, while the Mystics are 10th in the 12-team league at 78.5.

                          • Preview: Fever (4-6) at Lynx (10-0)
                            Date: June 14, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Lynx can set the WNBA record for most consecutive victories to start a season on Tuesday night.

The Lynx (10-0-) will go for that victory against the Indiana Fever, their 2015 WNBA Finals opponent, at Target Center in Minneapolis. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

Minnesota tied the league record for best start -- set by the 2012 Lynx squad -- on Saturday night with an 83-76 victory at Washington on the back end of road games on consecutive nights.

"We just like to handle challenges as they come," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said on WNBA.com after the game. "I just told them how proud I was. We don't make excuses. Nobody puts an asterisk next to a 'W' or an 'L' saying, 'Yeah, but...' Nobody cares about that.

"In the end, it's just the total. We take great pride and just take it one game at a time."

The closest game this season, by margin, for the defending WNBA champs came at Indiana on May 27. The Fever (4-6) trailed 29-6 after the first quarter but outscored the Lynx 44-24 in the second half to make it 74-71 at the end.

The rematch might not be as close if the Lynx can improve on their 3-of-20 shooting from 3-point range in that game.

Guards Lindsay Whalen and Seimone Augustus each scored 12 points for Minnesota in the first meeting against the Fever. Forward Maya Moore had nine points and eight assists.

Moore is having an MVP-type season, averaging 20.2 points, 4.9 assists and 4.8 rebounds, shooting 46.4 percent from the field.

Indiana is coming off a 90-88 home loss to Seattle on Sunday. Forward Tamika Catchings, who will turn 37 next month and is set to retire at the end of the season, scored 27 points for the Fever.

Rookie guard Tiffany Mitchell, a first-round pick out of South Carolina, leads a balanced Indiana attack with 13.6 points per game. Catchings is at 12.2 and guard Shenise Johnson averages 11.1.

Even if Minnesota gets the record, it will be looking over its shoulder at the Los Angeles Sparks, who are 9-0 heading into Tuesday night's home game against the Chicago Sky.

The Lynx and Sparks are potentially heading to an unbeaten showdown on Tuesday, June 21, in Los Angeles.

                              Date: June 14, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The struggling San Antonio Stars will try to snap a four-game losing streak when they entertain the Seattle Storm on Tuesday night at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The Stars (1-7) haven't won since May 27, when they posted a 99-78 victory over the Chicago Sky.

Since then, the Stars have been beaten twice by the undefeated Los Angeles Sparks and also suffered losses to the Phoenix Mercury and New York Liberty, falling by an average of 12.5 points per game.

San Antonio is coming off a 90-75 loss to New York. Astou Ndour came off the bench to post 18 points and nine rebounds, but San Antonio's starters combined for only 36 points on 11-of-43 shooting from the field and 3-of-15 shooting from 3-point range.

The Storm (4-6) is coming off a 90-88 victory over the Indiana Fever. Jewell Loyd scored 20 points in that game. She had 16 points in the second half, including two free throws that put the Storm up with 2.4 seconds remaining.

Seattle led 82-71 with three minutes to play, but the Fever rallied to take the lead with 31 seconds to play before the Storm reclaimed the lead on Loyd's free throws.

That was a needed win for Seattle, which had lost two in a row and three of its previous four.

San Antonio is led by Kayla McBride, who is averaging 17 points per game. She is shooting 44.6 percent from the field and 85.3 percent at the free-throw line.

Dearic Hamby is the Stars' top rebounder, averaging 5.4 per game.

Seattle is led by Loyd, who is averaging 17.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.

Breanna Stewart averages 14.8 points and 9.6 rebounds and Sue Bird averages 14.1 points, 5.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds for the Storm.

This is the first meeting of the season between San Antonio and Seattle. They will play again on July 8 in San Antonio and July 20 in Seattle.

                              • Preview: Sky (5-5) at Sparks (9-0)
                                Date: June 14, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Sparks will try to remain unbeaten when they play host to the Chicago Sky on Tuesday night at Staples Center.

The Sparks (9-0) are coming off a 97-73 victory over the Dallas Wings. Nneka Ogwumike turned in a monster performance, scoring 32 points on 12-of-12 shooting with 10 rebounds. Ogwumike is leading the WNBA in field-goal percentage, shooting a sizzling 67.9 percent from the field.

The Sky (5-5) are smarting from an 86-80 loss to the Phoenix Mercury. Chicago led 62-49 with 5:45 to play in the third quarter before being outscored 37-18 over the final 15 minutes. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Chicago, which is on a roll after losing four of its first five games to start the season.

The Sparks beat the Sky 93-80 when they met May 24 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. Candace Parker and Ogwumike had big games for Los Angeles as the former had 26 points and nine rebounds while the latter had 19 and nine, respectively.

Jessica Breland led the Sky with 16 points and nine rebounds in that contest. Jamierra Faulkner had 17 points and 10 assists while Elena Delle Donne, the WNBA's fifth-leading scorer at 17.9 points per game, was held to eight points on 4-of-14 shooting.

Tuesday's contest marks the start of a brief but difficult road trip for Chicago. After visiting Los Angeles, the Sky will travel to face the Atlanta Dream on Friday. Atlanta (7-3) is leading the Eastern Conference despite losing two of its last three games.

Los Angeles is beginning a three-game homestand that will feature two games against Western Conference rivals. The Sparks will entertain the Mercury (4-6) on Friday before facing off with the Minnesota Lynx (10-0) on June 21.

Minnesota, the only other undefeated team in the WNBA, will then host Los Angeles on June 24 at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
