Preview: Stars (1-5) at Mercury (2-6)
      Date: June 09, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

The San Antonio Stars and Phoenix Mercury are stuck at the bottom of the WNBA's Western Conference. One could use the other as a potential springboard to get their season on track Thursday night at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix.

Coming off a 74-61 loss on Saturday night at home to unbeaten Los Angeles, San Antonio (1-5) seeks its first road win. The Stars have dropped both of their road games, unable to consistently score, and will have to find an offensive rhythm against a team that can score in droves.

Although the Mercury are just 2-6 after losing 89-81 at defending WNBA champion Minnesota on Tuesday night, they average 85.1 points per game and are the only team in the league with four players averaging at least 12 ppg.

Guard Diana Taurasi leads Phoenix at 19 points per game, although she's struggling to make shots, hitting only 39.7 percent from the field. Center Brittney Griner averages 13.8, guard Penny Taylor 13.1 and forward DeWanna Bonner 12.8.

Emblematic of Taurasi's troubles in the loss at Minnesota, she converted only 4 of 11 shots from the field and finished with 12 points. Defense also hampered the Mercury, who allowed a whopping 57 second-half points to wipe out a strong first half that resulted in a 38-32 halftime lead.

Phoenix does have history in its favor against San Antonio, which it has beaten in eight of its last 10 meetings, including an 85-52 drubbing in the last matchup in September. Going back to the days when the Stars were located in Utah, the Mercury own a 28-13 record at home against them.

San Antonio is connecting on just 37.7 percent of its shots from the field, including a pitiful 26 percent on 3-pointers, and is scoring only 68.2 points per game. The Stars have yet to touch 80 points in a game this year.

Guard Kayla McBride has been San Antonio's only consistent source of offense so far, averaging 18.2 points. Forward Dearica Hamby is the only other double-figure scorer at 10.2 points; she also leads the Stars in rebounding at 6.2 per game.

          Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Phillies drafted a HS outfielder from California with the first pick in the baseball amateur draft Thursday.

-- Five of the first nine picks were high school players. Two of the first seven picks were high school pitchers who had committed to play for Vanderbilt next year, so rough day for the Commodores.

-- Three of the first 47 picks were Florida Gator pitchers, two of whom were taken by the A's. Now I need Florida to get KO'd from the college baseball tournament, so their coach can't abuse their arms the way college coaches do this time of year.

-- Ohio State is one of several bigtime football schools that will start to sell beer at their games this fall. Kind of hard to believe it has taken this long.

-- Virginia Tech was 10-8 in ACC basketball last winter, despite being favoried in only two of the 18 games-- Buzz Williams is doing a hell of a job there.

-- Sharks 4, Penguins 2-- Game 6 of Stanley Cup finals is Sunday in San Jose.

          **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.......

          13) Pirates got rained out Monday, played a doubleheader Tuesday, lost in 10 innings Wednesday, then got on a plane and flew to Denver for one make-up game against the Rockies, then flew back to Steel City last night for this weekend's series with the Cardinals. After this weekend, Pirates will have played 27 consecutive days.

          12) Indians 5, Mariners 3-- Quietly, Cleveland is three games up in AL Central.

          11) Which brings me to this: Why on God's green earth did the Red Sox fire Terry Francona? Francona went 744-552 in eight years managing Boston, winning a couple of World Series trophies, when the Red Sox hadn't won one in 80+ years. Instead of firing the guy, they should put a statue of him in front of Fenway Park.

Well, Francona is 290-253 in Cleveland and he has the Tribe in first place, and that is a harder job than managing the wealthy Red Sox. Francona is a future Hall of Famer.

          10) And yes, I realize the Red Sox won a World Series with John Farrell in 2013, but breaking a losing culture is the hardest thing a coach has to do and Francona is the guy who did it in Boston. Still think they screwed up firing him.

          9) Baltimore Orioles are 19-4 in games where the winning run scores after the sixth inning- Buck Showalter is also a really, really good manager. .

          8) Kershaw-Cueto in San Francisco tonight. Don't see lot of totals at 5.5.

          7) If you have Jose Altuve on your fantasy team and position eligibility is one game at that position, you can now use Altuve at shortstop- he played a few innings there in Thursday's loss in Arlington. First time Altuve has played short in the majors.

          6) Yordano Ventura got a nine-game suspension, Manny Machado four games after a brawl in Baltimore Tuesday. Both appealed, which means they may not serve their penalties before the 4th of July-- justice moves slowly in baseball circles.

          5) Madison Bumgarner is the best pitcher the Giants have, but he wants to be in the Home Run Derby in San Diego next month. He has 13 career homers and a .180 career batting average. If you were Bruce Bochy, would you let him try HR Derby?

Despite his .180 batting average, Bumgarner is 0-22 batting in the playoffs.

          4) I watch a ton of latenight TV when I am up updating this space; luckily I do not watch a lot of commercials, because if I did, I'd feel like a bad person.

Commercials for preventing animal cruelty, preventing starvation in Africa, more for keeping rare species of animals from becoming extinct, or helping wounded warriors-- the magic number seems to be $18 a month for each one. Enough already.

I'm sure most of these are worthy causes, but it gets tiring constantly being hit up for money-- the government should be taking care of our veterans, by the way.

          3) Miami Marlins are 31-29, despite being outscored by 27 runs from 7th inning on, even after they pounded Minnesota's bullpen in a 10-3 win Thursday. Marlins are +17 in runs scored in the first six innings of their games.

          2) Pirates' 1B John Jaso is hitting .375 (15-40) in first inning of games, which is good for Pittsburgh, since he bats leadoff.

          1) Obscure baseball rule I never heard until last night:

In games with a retractable dome, the roof is only allowed to move once during the game. Say the game starts with the roof open, if it closed during the game, it cannot be re-opened during the game. That is why roofs are rarely opened during the game, because once the roof opens, if it were to rain, by rule the roof couldn't be closed.

Preview: Storm (3-5) at Sun (1-7)
              Date: June 10, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

For Seattle Storm rookie Breanna Stewart, it's a homecoming to the state where she won four NCAA championships as arguably the most decorated player in the University of Connecticut's recently storied women's basketball history.

But Stewart's return to the Nutmeg State might be overshadowed by the fact that both her Storm and the Connecticut Sun desperately need wins to turn around their slow starts. The opportunity is there for both teams, starting with their second meeting of the year on Friday night at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

Seattle (3-5) is coming off an 86-78 home loss Sunday night to New York despite Stewart's game-high 17 rebounds, a franchise record for a rookie. Connecticut (1-7) has dropped six straight, the latest an 88-77 decision at home Sunday to Indiana, and is off to the worst start in franchise history.

Little surprise, then, that the Sun is marketing the return of Stewart to the place where she enjoyed nothing but success.

"First time coming back to Connecticut," Stewart told WNBA.com. "This was my home away from home, basically."

In her new digs, Stewart is enjoying a solid season, averaging 16.4 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 blocked shots per game. She compiled modest numbers of 11 points and five rebounds in the Storm's 93-81 verdict over the Sun on May 28 in Seattle.

Teammate Jewell Loyd fired in a game-high 26 that night and has been the Storm's top scorer this year at 18.1 ppg, connecting on nearly 50 percent of her shots from the field. Sue Bird and Alysha Clark are also in double figures for Seattle at 12.0 and 10.4 ppg, respectively.

But Seattle coach Jenny Boucek is looking for more consistency from her team, something she thought was lacking in the Sunday night loss.

"We weren't active and energetic the way we needed to be," Boucek said. "When you become mature in all of this as a team, you learn to play the way you need to play, whether you feel good or not."

The Sun is led by Jasmine Thomas at 11.3 points, 4.9 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game.

Preview: Sky (4-4) at Fever (4-4)
                Date: June 10, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Owners of three straight wins, the Chicago Sky have pushed themselves into the middle of a crowded Eastern Conference pack.

But after the Sky had a week off, will they continue to soar upon returning to action Friday night against the Indiana Fever at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis?

Both teams are 4-4, with Indiana coming off a win of its own, 88-77 at hapless Connecticut on Sunday. Friday night's winner takes over second place in the conference behind Atlanta, which owns a two-game lead.

"We take it one day at a time and work on avoiding slippage," Fever coach Stephanie White said Thursday during practice. "We have to share the basketball or we're not a good team. Chicago is a great team that has a lot of offensive firepower."

The Sky displayed a great deal of their offensive skill on June 3 in a 98-72 pasting of visiting Washington, shooting 54.9 percent from the field and drawing a whopping 30 assists off 39 made field goals. Elena Delle Donne led six players in double figures with 18 points, adding six rebounds and six assists.

Chicago blitzed Washington off the opening tip, establishing a 60-36 halftime lead and cruising through the second half as it achieved a season high in scoring.

Delle Donne, a 6-foot-5 forward from Delaware, is the league's fifth-leading scorer at 18.4 points per game. Guards Cappie Pondexter and Jamierra Faulkner are contributing 13.0 and 10.3 ppg, respectively, with Faulkner also doling out 6.6 assists per game.

Indiana is being paced offensively by rookie Tiffany Mitchell. The South Carolina product averages 15.1 points per game and fired in 21 in a reserve role during the victory at Connecticut.

Shenise Johnson is scoring 11.2 ppg and Tamika Catchings, who plans to retire at season's end, is hitting for 11.1 along with 4.8 rebounds.

This is the year's first meeting of the conference rivals, who see each other twice more, including what could be a critical matchup on Sept. 9 -- the next-to-last weekend of the regular season.

"It's always a good rivalry between Indiana and Chicago," Fever forward Lynetta Kizer said. "It's just a matter of being more aggressive and playing Fever basketball."

Preview: Lynx (8-0) at Dream (6-2)
                  Date: June 10, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

The Atlanta Dream are coming off a surprising loss Sunday to the Washington Mystics that snapped their five-game winning streak.

If they're going to start a new winning streak, they'll have to do it against the undefeated and defending WNBA champions in the Minnesota Lynx, which visit Philips Arena for the league's marquee matchup on Friday night.

Atlanta (6-2) was deficient on the glass, allowing 22 points off 13 offensive rebounds, and gave up nine 3-pointers. Now Minnesota (8-0), which could arguably be the league's top offensive team, comes into town ready to exploit those weaknesses.

"We can't take for granted our success and our winning streak," Dream forward Angel McCoughtry said. "We have to come out and play every game hard and not take anything for granted."

McCoughtry did her part on the offensive end against Washington with 28 points, her fifth 20-point outing in the last six games, one that extended her streak of consecutive double-figure games to 23.

Atlanta will need a similar outing from its star player and a whole lot more to send the Lynx to their first loss of the season. Minnesota enters this one fresh off an 89-81 win Tuesday night over Phoenix, overcoming the loss of guard Seimone Augustus to a concussion in the third quarter.

But the Lynx survived, getting 11 points from veteran guard Jia Perkins off the bench as they scored 57 second half points to wipe out a 38-32 halftime deficit. What's more, Augustus made the trip to Atlanta, although it's not known if she'll play Friday night.

"It's never idea for anybody to have injuries on a team," forward Maya Moore said, "but this team has experienced enough and I think are close enough to really come together when times get hard. It was good for us to get tested."

Moore leads the league in scoring at 21 points per game and matched her average against Phoenix, making her one of five Minnesota players to reach extra digits. She was named Western Conference Player of the Week, days after earning the conference's Player of the Month for May.

                            • Preview: Lynx (9-0) at Mystics (4-6)
                              Date: June 11, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Lynx will have to win a road game on consecutive nights to tie the WNBA record for most victories to start a season.

The defending league champs moved to 9-0 with a 110-78 victory at Atlanta on Friday night in advance of Saturday night's game at the Washington Mystics. The 2012 Lynx set the league record with a 10-0 mark to begin the season.

Washington (4-6) is winless in four home games at Verizon Center but is coming off a 2-1 road trip that concluded with victories at Atlanta and Dallas.

"Everything we do on the road we've got to carry to the home games," point guard Ivory Latta told the Washington Post. "We can't have spurts where we're good the first and second quarter and the third is not good and the fourth with two minutes to go is good. It's got to be good all the way around."

On Friday night, the Lynx led 46-45 at halftime but used a 32-18 edge in the third quarter to pull away en route to a season-high in points.

Six players reached double-digit points, led by forward Maya Moore, who scored 19, two below her league-best average of 21.0. Center Sylvia Fowles had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Starting guard Seimone Augustus, who suffered a concussion Tuesday night against Phoenix, is on the road trip but did not play Friday night. Jia Perkins started in her place and scored 18 points.

The Mystics have lost six in a row at home, dating to last season.

They are healthier now than they were at the beginning of the season. Latta, a two-time All-Star who missed the first four games of the season while recovering from torn meniscus, has played 28 minutes off the bench in each of the past two games.

Another point guard, Natasha Cloud, missed three games because of kidney stones but has returned to the starting lineup.

Forward Kahleah Copper, a 2016 first-round pick out of Rutgers, missed the last two games because of concussion-related symptoms.

This will be the first meeting of the season between Minnesota and Washington. The Mystics won both games last season.

                              • Preview: Liberty (4-4) at Stars (1-6)
                                Date: June 11, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

On Tuesday morning, veteran Swin Cash announced this would be her last season in the WNBA. Later that day, Cash and the New York Liberty promptly went out and suffered their worst loss of the season.

New York is hoping to honor Cash more appropriately Saturday when it faces struggling San Antonio to cap a three-game road trip.

Cash, who is in her 15th season in the WNBA, is sixth in league history with 493 games played and 14th with 4,983 points. She scored just five points in an overall listless performance by New York in a 100-77 loss to Los Angeles on Tuesday.

"It was a tough game against LA," Cash said. "But I think if we can just really learn from our mistakes from that game, we have enough practices to really clean up some things and focus on San Antonio."

The Liberty's bench accounted for 49 points, including a team-high 12 points from reserve guard Shavonte Zellous against the Sparks. It was Zellous' fourth straight game with double-digit points. No Liberty starter, however, cracked double figures.

Zellous was more concerned about the team's defense, though. It was the first time this season the Liberty surrendered 100 points.

"We've got to move on from the things that we know we can correct," Zellous said. "Our defensive effort wasn't there. We know that is correctable."

The host Stars (1-6) have dropped three straight games, including back-to-back losses to Los Angeles and a 90-75 defeat at Phoenix on Thursday. Monique Curry led San Antonio with 19 points and eight rebounds against Phoenix.

Kayla McBride paces the Stars in scoring, averaging 17.3 points per game, seventh best in the WNBA. No other Star is averaging double figures.

San Antonio's lone win this season came against Chicago on May 27. The Stars have lost three straight since then.

This is the first of three meetings between San Antonio and New York this season. The Liberty won both games against the Stars last year. San Antonio had won the previous six meetings.
