Game of the Day: Clippers at Thunder
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the Clippers resting their star players in this contest, we should be treated to the Russell Westbrook show Thursday night.

Los Angeles Clippers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-16, 209.5)

The Los Angeles Clippers aim to pick up their fifth consecutive victory when they visit the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday. Los Angeles has been especially good the past three games, winning by an average of 19.7 points after cruising to a 99-79 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday.

Oklahoma City also has been rolling up the victories but had an eight-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday when it suffered an 88-82 loss to the Detroit Pistons. The Thunder averaged 117.3 points during the stretch of wins before recording a season-low point total against the Pistons on a night in which All-Star small forward Kevin Durant was rested. Los Angeles is thriving and led by as many as 33 points while routing the Timberwolves. The Clippers plan to rest point guard Chris Paul, shooting guard J.J. Redick and center DeAndre Jordan on Thursday.

            TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY: The Thunder opened as 8.5-point favorites at home and the total opened at 214. With confirmation that the Clippers will be resting most of their starting lineup the spread was adjusted to -16 and the total came down to 209.5.

            INJURY REPORT:

Clippers - PG C. Paul (Out Thursday, rest), SG J. Redick (Out Thursday, rest), C D. Jordan (Out Thursday, rest), SF P. Pierce (Out Thursday, ankle), PF B. Griffin (Out Thursday, suspension).

Thunder - No injuries to report.

            POWER RANKINGS: Clippers (-7.9) - Thunder (-10.2) + home court (-3) = Thunder -5.3

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (47-27, 35-36-3 ATS, 30-44 O/U): Los Angeles is 4 1/2 games behind the third-place Thunder in the Western Conference standings and resting three starters seems to indicate the Clippers feel that rising above fourth place isn't feasible with just eight games remaining. Los Angeles will get power forward Blake Griffin (hand, suspension) back on Sunday and will have to get Griffin plenty of playing time during the final six games. Backup shooting guard Jamal Crawford has scored in double digits in five straight games and backup point guard Austin Rivers is averaging 13 points over the past two games.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (52-23, 33-41-1 ATS, 34-41 O/U): Oklahoma City badly missed Durant during the loss to the Pistons but coach Billy Donovan said he can't factor in the opponent when it comes to resting a player. "We have to make decisions of what's best for our team," Donovan told reporters. "It's not necessarily who we're playing against, but where we're at right now — physically, mentally, emotionally. Games, minutes, all those things, I think you have to evaluate that after games and do what's best for your team." All-Star point Russell Westbrook had 24 points for his third consecutive 20-point scoring effort but was just 8-of-28 shooting against the Pistons.

            TRENDS:

            * Clippers are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
            * Thunder are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
            * Under is 4-0 in Clippers last 4 vs. Western Conference.
            * Underdog is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

CONSENSUS: With the Clippers catching eight and a half points early and moving to +16, the public has favored them at a rate of 57 percent. The public is pounding over 209.5 with 79 percent of the totals wagers coming in on that side.

              • Inside the Paint - Thursday
                March 31, 2016

Losing a wager on a healthy underdog in overtime of a NBA game isn’t uncommon but it definitely still hurts. With that being said, we apologize to those of you who had the Jazz (+4 ½, ML +190) last night in their 103-96 loss to Golden State. The Warriors hit a late three to force overtime at 89-89 and outscored the Jazz 14-7 in the extra session for yet another improbable win and cover from Salt Lake City.

Golden State’s win helped the favorites go 7-3 straight up last night while the underdogs managed to go 5-5 against the spread. The ‘under’ posted an 8-2 mark last night and is now 23-9 (72%) since Sunday. If you believe things start to balance out in the totals market, then you’re likely to start leaning to the high side in the next few days.

Thursday’s slate has six games on tap and here’s my quick handicap.

Orlando (31-43 SU, 41-32-1 ATS) at Indiana (39-35 SU, 37-37 ATS)

The Pacers opened as 8 ½-point home favorites for this matchup and they currently sit in the eighth seed of the Eastern Conference. Indiana should have confidence heading into this matchup, winning 15 of the past 17 meetings against Orlando which includes eight straight at home, with those victories coming by an average of 18 points per game. The Pacers have covered 14 of those 15 games but they haven’t been in great form lately. Indiana is 2-5 ATS in its last seven games and coming off a 98-96 home loss to Chicago on Tuesday.

Orlando won’t be headed to the playoffs but it has won two straight games and Tuesday’s 139-105 victory at home over Brooklyn was the best offensive performance of the season for the club. The Magic could get Nikola Vucevic (groin) back in the lineup tonight after missing 13 straight games. Still, it’s hard to back a team that is 1-10 SU and 4-7 ATS in its last 11 on the road. The ‘under’ has gone 8-3 during that span and the total for Thursday is listed at 207.

Brooklyn (21-53 SU, 37-36-1 ATS) at Cleveland (52-22 SU, 32-40-2 ATS)

Tough game to handicap here as the Cavaliers are laying two touchdowns (-14) at most betting shops and will be looking for revenge against the Nets, who upset them 104-95 last Thursday as 11-point home underdogs. Cleveland hasn’t been a great bet recently, going 2-7 ATS in its last nine games. As a double-digit home favorite, the club has gone 12-2 SU and 5-9 ATS. Backing Brooklyn on the road hasn’t been a horrible investment (7-29 SU, 19-17 ATS) but it’s lost five straight (2-3 ATS) games in Cleveland and seven in a row as visitors heading into this matchup. With Cleveland still looking to lock up the No. 1 seed in the East, I highly doubt it drops this game tonight and would probably lean to the host covering as well. The Nets won’t have center Brook Lopez (rest) in the lineup and Cavs point guard Kyrie Irving (illness) is listed as ‘questionable.’

Chicago (37-37 SU, 31-43 ATS) at Houston (37-38 SU, 33-42 ATS)

This matchup looks like a toss-up and I was surprised to see the Rockets listed as 5 ½-point home favorites. I thought the number would be a couple points lower considering neither team has been consistent on the court or at the betting counter this season. Both still have a shot at the playoffs but Houston has a better chance and is currently sitting in the seventh spot in the West.

The pair both showed some heart earlier this week by notching key road wins. Chicago dropped Indiana 98-96, which snapped a four-game losing streak. Despite that win, the Bulls have lost 11 of their last 13 on the road and fatigue could be a factor tonight with the team playing their sixth game in eight days.

Meanwhile, Houston rallied past Cleveland for a 106-100 road win on Tuesday and even though the team is 3-4 both SU and ATS in its last seven games, all of the games were decided by single digits. That fact right there has me slightly leaning to Chicago tonight.

Plus, I believe the Bulls have a higher sense of urgency at this point, especially when you look at the schedule for the Rockets. Houston currently owns tiebreakers over both Utah and Dallas, and they close the season with four games against four of the worst five teams in the West. Even if they lose tonight, Houston still controls its own destiny for the playoffs.

Denver (32-44 SU, 40-33-3 ATS) at New Orleans (27-47 SU, 32-42 ATS)

These “roll the ball out” games usually have me leaning to the ‘over’ but I’m not sure if New Orleans has the fire power to play keep up tonight. The first two encounters this season between the pair easily went ‘over’ the number and those totals ranged from 204 to 207. This number opened a tad higher (210) and it makes you believe defense will be limited but the line has dropped at most shops to 207. It’s rare to see Denver listed as a road favorite (-6 ½) but it’s lived up to the expectations with a 6-3 record (4-4-1 ATS) when laying points as a visitor while the ‘over’ has gone 6-2-1 in those games. Both clubs are playing on no rest and neither Denver (5-10 SU 8-7 ATS) or New Orleans (3-11 SU, 7-7 ATS) gives you reason to back them in these situations. Denver could be more gassed in this spot, playing its fourth in five nights.

L.A. Clippers (47-27 SU, 35-35-4 ATS) at Oklahoma City (52-23 SU, 33-40-2 ATS)

This was going to be the best matchup of the night but Doc Rivers has already announced that he’s resting Chris Paul, J.J. Redick and De Andre Jordan for this game, plus Paul Pierce is nursing an injury too. This will be the fourth game in five nights for the Clippers as the team cruised past Minnesota 99-79 last night. Los Angeles has been a great bet on zero days rest (11-6 SU, 8-9 ATS), especially lately where they’ve won nine of their last 10 on back-to-back spots. However, those numbers should be taken lightly with a limited squad tonight.

Oklahoma City opened as a healthy favorite (-16) and that line is more than fair assuming the Thunder roll out a full roster. These teams are practically locked into the three and four seeds in the West, so don’t be surprised to see both clubs sit players in the final month. The Thunder have taken two of three from the Clippers this season, which includes a 120-108 win earlier this month as a six-point home favorite on Mar. 9 from Chesapeake Energy Arena. OKC had its eight-game winning streak snapped Tuesday in an 88-82 loss at Detroit and it should be noted that the Thunder are 4-4 in their last four games after a loss.

Boston (43-31 SU, 38-34-2 ATS) at Portland (39-36 SU, 41-34 ATS)

This is a great matchup between two clubs headed to the playoffs and the line seems fair with Portland listed as a 3 ½-point home favorite. Boston was humbled 114-90 at the Clippers on Monday but will have had two days to prepare for this game, plus a big battle at Golden State on Friday. The club could get Jae Crowder (ankle) tonight and that will help since they’ve gone 4-5 without him this season, plus both the offense and defense both dip.

Portland was embarrassed 116-93 at Boston on Mar. 2 as a six-point road underdog and now has dropped two straight to the Celtics. The Trail Blazers are averaging 114 PPG at home this season, and they’ve gone 16-4 (11-9 ATS) at home in their last 20 games. They’ve won five in a row at the Moda Center but are just 2-3 ATS during this run and the once potent offense has only scored 109, 108 and 105 in their last three victories.

Portland has been shaky at home versus the East this season, going 8-6 SU and 6-8 ATS, with just three of them coming against teams expected to make the playoffs. Boston has only gone 14-12 versus the Western Conference, but they’ve played their best against the Northwest (6-3).

                • Thursday's Top Action
                  March 31, 2016

CHICAGO BULLS (37-37) at HOUSTON ROCKETS (37-38)

                  Sportsbook.ag Line: Houston -6.5, Total: 216

Both the Bulls and Rockets will each be going for their second straight victories when the teams meet in Houston on Thursday.

The Bulls went into Indiana on Tuesday and came away with a 98-96 victory as 5.5-point road underdogs. Chicago had lost four straight games heading into that one, so it’s important that they get a victory on Thursday. The team is currently out of the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference and needs all the wins it can get moving forward.

The Rockets are coming off of a 106-100 victory as 1.5-point road underdogs against the Cavaliers on Tuesday. Houston has now won-and-covered in two of its past three games and this is another team that is fighting for its postseason life.

These teams met on Mar. 5 and the Bulls won that game 108-100 as 1.5-point home favorites. It was the only meeting between these teams on the year and Houston is actually 2-0 both SU and ATS when playing at home against Chicago over the past three seasons.

One thing worth pointing out is that the Bulls are just 1-11 ATS off a road win this season. The Rockets, meanwhile, are 27-11 ATS off of two non-conference games over the past three seasons.

The Bulls desperately needed a victory on Tuesday and SG Jimmy Butler (21.0 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 4.4 APG, 1.7 SPG) really came through for the team. Butler hit a game winner with just under three seconds left and the game was actually the best he’s played in a while. He finished with just 14 points, but he was 6-for-10 from the floor and had been struggling with his shot heading into that one. He’ll need to hold his own against James Harden on Thursday.

PG Derrick Rose (16.8 PPG, 4.8 APG) is going to need to step it up in this one for Chicago. Rose was just 4-for-15 from the field with eight points against Indiana and that type of performance is not going to cut it in this one. He did have 17 points and nine assists the last time he faced this Rockets team and should be feeling confident heading into this one.

C Pau Gasol (16.6 PPG, 11.0 RPG, 4.2 APG, 2.0 BPG) had been struggling over the past few weeks for the Bulls, but he is averaging 14.5 PPG and 11.5 RPG over the past two contests. As long as he can be an offensive presence then he will be helping his team. He must, however, hold his own against Dwight Howard on Thursday.

The Rockets are in desperate need of some victories, but they also happen to be facing a Bulls team that needs them just as badly. If the team is going to win this game on Thursday then SG James Harden (28.6 PPG, 7.5 APG, 6.4 RPG, 1.7 SPG) will need to show up in a big way.

Harden torched the Bulls the last time these teams met, finishing with 36 points, eight assists and five rebounds in 40 minutes of action. He did struggle with his shot in that game and will need to be a bit more efficient this time around. He also can’t afford to let Jimmy Butler do whatever he pleases when he is on the defensive end.

C Dwight Howard (14.0 PPG, 11.9 RPG, 1.6 BPG) will also really need to play well on both ends in this one. He has recorded two straight double-doubles, but the team will need him to be aggressive offensively in this game. He is a lot stronger than Gasol, so he should be able to score around the basket. It would take a lot of pressure off of Harden if Howard did start scoring more and this Rockets team would be tougher to beat moving forward.
