  • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Six of the better minor league prospects for the Seattle Mariners........

    1) Alex Jackson, OF-- Hit only .224 in his first two pro seasons.

    2) Edwin Diaz, P-- Went 5-10, 4.57 in 20 starts in AA Southern League.

    3) Drew Jackson, SS-- Stanford alum hit .358 in his first 59 pro games.

    4) Tyler O'Neill, OF- Canadian kid hit 32 HRs as a 21-year old in A ball LY.

    6) Luiz Gohara, P-- Has career record of 5-17, 5.73; unsure why he is a prospect.

    26) Dario Pizzano, OF-- Columbia alum hit .308 in Southern League LY.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.......

    13) Oregon 82, Duke 68-- ACC is 12-3 in NCAA's; 12-1 vs seeds 7 or lower, 0-2 vs #6 or better seeds. Duke was 7-22 on arc; last three teams to beat Oregon combined to shoot over 60% from downtown. Duke has never made a Final Four out of the West.

    12) Kansas 79, Maryland 63-- Diamond Stone played only 21:00 and took four shots for the Terps, who were outrebounded 43-28. Terps wound up going 5-6 in their last 11 games; disappointing end for a team that figures to lose several guys to the pros.

    11) Oklahoma 77, Texas A&M 63-- Aggies' comeback was hurt by their 13-24 night on foul line; they were down 19 at the half. Sooners made 11-25 on arc, made 52.7% of its 2-point shots. A&M was lucky to beat Northern Iowa last weekend; reality set in here against a veteran Oklahoma squad with one of the best coaches in the country.

    10) Villanova 92, Miami 69-- Was probably a rough night for TV ratings, four cruddy games; Wildcats pulled away from 43-37 halftime lead and jogged here. Villanova has scored 88.3 ppg in winning first three tournament games.

    9) Stat of the Day: Since 2003, #2-seeds are 11-5 SU vs #1-seeds in regional finals. Underdogs are 9-7 vs spread in those games.

    8) All the #1-seeds are favored in this round; last time a #1-seed was an underdog in a r egional semifinal was 2005, when Washington (+1.5) lost 93-79 to Louisville.

    7) There is a new 8-team tournament at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas starting Monday; games are being shown all day on CBS Sports Network. These teams haven't played in at least two weeks, in some cases three- tough games to handicap.

Oakland is playing Towson, Louisiana Tech vs East Tennessee State, Old Dominion vs Tennessee Tech and UCSB-Northern Illinois- those are first round games.

    6) Robert Griffin III signed with Cleveland; Browns have a game in Washington this fall, so that might be a Monday night game now. Curious to see if Griffin can stay healthy for a whole season; the Vegas over/under on his starts this year: 9.5.

    5) When RGIII starts for the Browns next fall, he'll be Cleveland's 25th starting QB since 1999; Dallas has had 19 since then, second-highest total in NFL.

    4) Over/unders on Brock Osweiler: 3,750 passing yards, 25.5 TD passes.

    3) Red Sox are playing Toronto two games in Montreal next weekend; they've already sold 106,000 tickets for the two games, as Montreal clamors for baseball to return to Quebec. Wonder how many of the 106,000 are Red Sox fans from south of border.

    2) Colorado Rockies' AA farm team in the Eastern League is in Hartford; they're the Yard Goats. Curious to see what the hats look like. Hartford Yard Goats.

    1) Quote of the Day, part II from newly-minted comedian Mitt Romney:

“Donald Trump has had several foreign wives. It turns out that there really are jobs Americans won’t do.”

If Mr Romney tried this hard when he actually ran for President himself, maybe he would've won. I've always heard Mormons are nice people; now? Not so much.

I'll say one last thing; if there is a guy out there who wouldn't be happier than hell to have Melania Trump hanging on his arm, I'd be surprised. If you don't like Donald Trump, that makes sense, but his wife seems like a nice lady-- she babysat for Ted Cruz' kids during one of the Republican debates. Go figure.

              • Leonard to miss Spurs' shot at history along with 3 others
                March 24, 2016

SAN ANTONIO (AP) The San Antonio Spurs will be without Kawhi Leonard, fellow starter Danny Green and two key reserves against Memphis on Friday night when they attempt to match the longest home winning streak to open a season.

Leonard suffered a bruised right quadriceps midway through the third quarter of San Antonio's 112-88 victory over Miami on Wednesday night. His return is unknown, but the injury is not considered serious.

It was the Spurs' 36th straight home victory to open the season, which is one shy of matching the league record set by the Chicago Bulls in 1995-96.

Leonard was injured after being fouled by Heat rookie Justise Winslow on a driving layup. San Antonio's 6-foot-7, All-Star forward remained in the game to complete the three-point play and match his career high of 32 points, but exited thereafter with team trainer Will Sevening following close behind.

''He had to come out when he did because his leg was just ... it was a good contusion so it was just stiff, it wouldn't work,'' Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. ''So, he had to come out. To put him back in wouldn't have made any sense.''

In addition to being without Leonard, San Antonio is sitting Green and reserves Boris Diaw and Patty Mills for rest on Friday.

Popovich routinely rests his veteran players throughout the arduous, 82-game regular season to help them remain fresh and healthy for the postseason.

The Spurs were fined $250,000 by then-NBA commissioner David Stern when Popovich sent Green, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili home for rest on Nov. 29, 2012, rather than having them play Miami in the final game of a six-game road trip.

Stern said the fine was due to a litany of transgressions, but primarily because San Antonio did not alert the league or media of the players' unavailability prior to the game.

Since then, the Spurs have announced in advance which players will rest.

Being without Leonard, Green, Diaw and Mills could be troublesome Wednesday, even though the Grizzlies are without injured starters Marc Gasol and Mike Conley.

Memphis holds a four-game lead over Portland for the fifth seed in the Western Conference.

San Antonio has an 11-game lead over Oklahoma City for the West's second seed and trails Golden State by four for the top seed.

The Spurs have won 45 straight regular-season home games dating to March 2015, which matches the 1995-96 Bulls for the second-longest streak in league history and trails the Warriors' current 51-game winning streak.

                  • Inside the Paint - Saturday
                    March 26, 2016

Saturday’s NBA card offers up 10 games on tap and this slate has a little something for everybody, especially those sick of watching the favorites cash at a ridiculous pace in the NCAA Tournament.

Since the league started stacking up the Friday and Saturday slates, fatigue will play a major factor again with nine of the 20 teams in action playing on no rest.

Listed below are straight up and against the spread marks for the teams facing back-to-back spots tonight, plus we noted overall total results and some streaks heading into Saturday’s games as well.

                    Magic: 4-12 SU, 8-8 ATS, 8-8 O/U (Streaks - 0-4 SU, 1-3 ATS last 4)

                    Raptors: 8-5 SU, 7-5-1 ATS, 8-5 O/U (5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS L6)

                    Hawks: 11-7 SU, 9-9 ATS, 19-8-1 O/U (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS L3)

                    Pistons: 9-7 SU, 10-5-1 ATS (6-0 SU, 6-0 ATS L6)

                    Spurs: 13-0 SU, 8-5 ATS, 7-6 O/U (2-5 ATS L7)

                    Timberwolves: 2-11 SU, 5-8 ATS, 9-2-1 O/U (Over 3-0 L3)

                    Hornets: 9-4 SU, 5-8 ATS, 6-7 O/U (6-0 SU, 4-2 ATS L6)

                    Bucks: 7-10 SU, 11-6 ATS, 8-8-1 O/U

                    Suns: 4-9 SU, 5-8 ATS, 4-9 O/U (2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS L3, 6-0 UNDER L6)

I believe situational handicapping is key in the Association and the above numbers help provide a more informative outlook when applicable.

Here’s my quick handicap on the entire slate.

                    Indiana at Brooklyn:
No overnight line posted due to the status of Paul George (leg) for this game. The Nets are coming off an impressive 104-95 win over the Cavs on Thursday and it’s only won back-to-back victories three times all season. The Pacers have already dropped them twice this season and they’ve been a great investment as road favorites recently, going 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS in their last eight.

Chicago at Orlando: This matchup looks like a pass due to the uncertain health and current form of both teams. The Bulls were just embarrassed in not one but two games to the Knicks and they’ve been horrible on the road. Chicago has gone 1-9 SU and 3-7 ATS in its last 10 as a visitor and the defense hasn’t held an opponent under 100 during this span. Meanwhile, Orlando has dropped six straight games and it’s allowing 108 points per game during this losing streak.

Toronto at New Orleans: The Raptors are clearly the more talented and deeper team in this matchup but laying nine points on the road could be dicey. Toronto has dropped two straight albeit to a pair of playoff teams in the Celtics and Rockets. New Orleans isn’t going dancing in this year’s postseason and the Raptors have been a decent bet (11-6 SU, 9-8 ATS) as road favorites this season. Plus, they’ve been a solid bet on zero days rest lately (see above).

Atlanta at Detroit: This is one of two games on Saturday where we have two teams playing on no rest and both of these clubs have been golden for gamblers recently in these spots. Heading into Saturday, Detroit has won five straight games (3-1-1 ATS) but they haven’t beaten a playoff team during this span. Coincidentally, the last team to beat them was Atlanta, who notched a 118-114 win on Mar. 16 from the Palace as one-point road favorites. The Pistons opened as one-point favorites for the rematch and the number seems fair but this is definitely a step up in class. Atlanta is the third seed in the East and playing great, going 9-2 SU and 8-3 ATS in its last 11 games. The ‘over’ has cashed in the last five encounters between this pair yet the total on this game is hovering around 204 points. Detroit exploded for 72 first-half points in last night’s 112-105 win over Charlotte but only managed 14 in the fourth quarter. Offensive letdown tonight?

Cleveland at New York: It’s hard to make a case for the Cavaliers, who are 1-6 ATS (4-3 SU) in their last seven games and listed as healthy road favorites (-8). Plus, New York is playing with confidence after sweeping a home-and-home against Chicago this week. The Knicks haven’t been great home underdogs (5-15 SU, 6-13-1 ATS) but the Cavaliers have been inconsistent as road favorites (19-11 SU, 9-19-2 ATS), especially versus the number. Cleveland has won four straight at MSG but only one victory came by double digits.

San Antonio at Oklahoma City: This was expected to be the game of the night but reports have San Antonio resting its old “Big Three” plus Kawhi Leonard (quad) is ‘out’ as well. San Antonio beat the Thunder 93-85 a couple weeks ago at home, which avenged a 112-106 loss at OKC on opening night. Since that loss to the Spurs on Mar. 12, Oklahoma City has won six straight (4-2 ATS) heading into this game and the offense is on fire right now, averaging 118 PPG. Until you know the status of who’s in and out, this game looks like a pass with a possible lean to the ‘over’ based on the Thunder’s form.

Utah at Minnesota: It’s rare to see the Jazz listed as a road favorite but they’ve lived up to those expectations. Utah has gone 7-3 both SU and ATS when laying points on the road and the ‘under’ has connected in eight of those games. The Timberwolves (+6) are coming off a quality double-overtime win at Washington on Friday. The club has won two straight and has been great for bettors (6-1 ATS) over the last two weeks. Despite that run, this is a tough spot. Minnesota is playing on no rest, in overtime and this will also be their third game in four nights too. Not to mention, they’ve only won three straight games once this season. Playing a great defensive team like Utah could create trouble for the Wolves, especially after facing two clubs that don't play defense (Kings, Wizards).

Charlotte at Milwaukee: Both clubs enter this game on no rest and that angle points to the Hornets, who have captured six straight games when facing back-to-back spots. Despite losing at Detroit last night, Charlotte has gone 17-5 in its last 22 games and that includes an 8-3 record on the road. Milwaukee has struggled down the stretch, dropping four straight and five of its last six games. Charlotte has won two of the first three meetings between the pair and the ‘under’ has cashed in all of those results. I wouldn't be surprised to see Charlotte capture a real tight victory, right around the number.

Boston at Phoenix: On paper, this is a mismatch and the oddsmakers agree. Boston has been installed as an eight-point road favorite as it begins a five-game swing on the West Coast. The sledding gets difficult after tonight but Boston should win this game against a Suns team that could be without Brandon Knight as well. The Celtics have been shaky on the road recently (1-4 SU, 1-4 ATS) but they enter this game on a three-game winning streak and have posted 117, 115 and 114 in their last three encounters against Phoenix, which has resulted in a 2-1 record while the 'over' has gone 3-0.

Philadelphia at Portland: This is likely going to be the chase game on Saturday and I’d expect most bettors will be riding the Trail Blazers as double digit home favorites. Make a note that Philadelphia thumped, yes thumped Portland 114-89 on Jan. 16 as a six-point home underdog. The 76ers have dropped seven straight heading into this game and Wednesday’s 104-103 buzzer beater loss to the Nuggets was gut-wrenching. Portland lost at the buzzer on Thursday to the Clippers (96-94) from the Staples Center. While the Blazers (22-12 SU, 19-15 ATS) have been solid at home, I think the 76ers might come to play tonight knowing they have a game at Golden State on Saturday looming.

                    • Former Warrior Lee presented with ring
                      March 25, 2016

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) David Lee got one last loud ovation from the Golden State crowd.

The player who went from being the only All-Star on a losing team to a role player on a championship one was honored Friday night in his first trip back to Oracle Arena since leaving the Warriors after winning the championship last season.

Lee got a loud ovation during pregame introductions as he made his first start for Dallas against his former team. The Warriors then played a video tribute to Lee, and Stephen Curry then walked to center court to say a few words, crediting Lee for ''changing the culture'' around the team. Curry then presented Lee with his championship ring.

''It's very special,'' Lee said before the ceremony. ''When we got here, we were a losing team. It's been quite a journey. To end that last year with the ultimate thing you want to accomplish in sports, to win a championship, it's great to celebrate that and enjoy it for one last time tonight.''

Lee had seen a few photos of the ring that contains more than six carats of diamonds and sapphires on social media, but wanted to wait to see it in person until he got his own.

Lee was one of the centerpieces of the Warriors when he was acquired from the New York Knicks in July 2010 in a sign-and-trade deal. He became Golden State's first All-Star in 16 seasons when he made the team in 2013 and was a major part of teams that had little success.

Lee averaged 18.2 points and 10 rebounds per game his first four seasons with the Warriors, forming a solid one-two punch with Curry. Golden State won just one playoff series in that span before finally breaking through to win the championship last season when Lee's role was significantly reduced.

''When they were a struggling franchise, he was a guy who came on board here and picked them up,'' Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. ''He was one of the transition guys between the down years and the championship. I know that's appreciated and I know people here will give him that love tonight.''

Knocked out of the starting lineup by Draymond Green by an injury in preseason, Lee became a little-used reserve on the title-winning team last season. He played just 49 games - often sitting out even when healthy - and averaged just 7.9 points per game for his lowest output since his rookie season with the Knicks in 2005-06.

But Lee never complained and never became a distraction. Instead, he embraced his role and embodied the team-first spirit that propelled the Warriors to their first NBA title in 40 years.

Lee's biggest contribution on the court might've come in the fourth quarter of Game 3 of the NBA Finals in Cleveland. The Warriors' comeback fell short, but the team regained its rhythm behind Lee's pick-and-roll play and ball-movement, which had been sorely lacking in the series.

''David helped us win that championship,'' coach Steve Kerr said. ''In a year when we asked him to take a backseat, he handled his role extremely well. He came into the finals when we really needed him and came through. I can't wait to hear the crowd cheering for him tonight. It's going to be awesome.''

Lee continued to play as a reserve and the Warriors won the next three games. He also funded a trip for the entire team to Las Vegas following the championship parade, and was well-liked by coaches and teammates.

''The reason why we won a championship last year is because we did it as a team,'' Lee said. ''There were guys who made sacrifices, there were guys who stepped up, there were guys who did big things all year long. We won it as a team and I thought the only way to celebrate it was as a team.''

                      • Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Florida football coach Jim McElwaine got a $750K raise, now makes $4.25M.

-- Oakland Raiders paid $925K in rent for the O.co Coliseum LY; they'll pay $3.5M next year. Thats what happens when you threaten to skip town.

-- Enough with The Masters commercials; they've been on since January.

-- With RGIII signing in Cleveland, looks like Denver is only team left that night trade for Colin Kaepernick.

-- Apparently the Shanahans talked to John Elway about RGIII and they weren't complimentary. Questions remain as to whether Mr Griffin can lead a team.

-- QB prospect Christian Hackenberg is blaming Penn State coach James Franklin for Hackenberg's reduced production his last two years at Penn State. While that may be true, not sure scouts like hearing a kid criticize his former coaches.

                        **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind......

                        13) Notre Dame 61, Wisconsin 56-- Irish outscored last two opponents 14-3 in last minute of the game, sneaking by SF Austin/Wisconsin. Now Notre Dame plays UNC, which beat them by 31 three weeks ago in Washington, at ACC tournament. Irish did beat Tar Heels in South Bend 80-76 during the regular season.

                        12) Syracuse 63, Gonzaga 60-- Last week was best first weekend tournament has had; Sweet 16 wasn't as good, except for this game and ND-Wisconsin. Syracuse lost at Virginia 73-65 back in January, despite Orange going 13-30 on arc; teams play again Sunday at 6:00, with a trip to the Final Four in Houston up for grabs.

                        11) Virginia 84, Iowa State 71-- Cyclone squad that was #4 in country in experience got run off floor here, now has major rebuilding job, playing in a brutal league. Virginia shot 61% inside arc; Iowa State had no depth, hard to press that way and get back in the game. Last time all four #1 seeds made it to Elite 8: 2009.

                        10) North Carolina 101, Indiana 86-- In regional finals since 2005, teams seeded #6 or lower are 11-2 vs spread-- both non-covers were favored- that trend would favor the Fighting Irish Sunday. Last team to score 100 points in Sweet 16 game was Kentucky in 2012, also against Indiana. Hoosiers had an outstanding season, though.

                        9) Regional final spreads: Virginia -8.5 vs Syracuse.
                        Kansas -2.5 vs Villanova.....Oregon -1 vs Oklahoma........UNC -9.5 vs Notre Dame

                        8) Coaching carousel: Jerod Haase jumps from UAB to Stanford.

Tulane hired 62-year old Mike Dunleavy Sr, who has never coached college ball, but has coached three NBA teams.

                        7) Flip side: Georgia Tech canned Brian Gregory after five years, one night after Gregory was guest analyst on CBS College Sports.

Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin told UNLV to take a hike, using them as leverage to try and get better facilities built for his Bearcats. Leading candidate for the UNLV coaching job appears to be New Mexico State's Marvin Menzies.

                        6) Speaking of CBS College Sports, Danny Granger has a future on TV; he's done a good job on their studio show this month.

                        5) Wisconsin's Ethan Happ is the cousin of major league pitcher JA Happ.

                        4) Major league position players must be going nuts as Opening Day nears; spring training is so damn long because pitchers need to get their arms ready. Hitters do not need 30+ games to ready for the season- then once the season starts, lot of the games will be in much colder weather. which takes a big adjustment.

                        3) Mets are using Wilmer Flores some at 1B; you wonder if he'll become a utility guy once Asdrubel Cabrera gets healthy and becomes the Mets' SS.

                        2) Regional final pointspread trends by region:
-- East final: favorites covered four of last five.
-- South final: favorites covered six of last nine.
-- Midwest final: underdogs are 8-5 vs spread in last 13
-- West final: underdogs are 15-3 vs spread in last 18.

                        1) Guatemala has fewer people than Los Angeles; who knew?
