  • Preview: Wizards (30-33) at Nuggets (27-38)
    Date: March 12, 2016 9:30 PM EDT

The Washington Wizards have fallen into a tailspin at the wrong time, though the teams directly in front of them in the playoff chase seem willing to let them hang around.

Things won't get easier in the finale of their trip against a Denver Nuggets team seeking its longest winning streak of the season.

After the rookie was in awe of All-Star John Wall in the first meeting, Emmanuel Mudiay will try to extend his surge and lead the Nuggets to their fourth straight victory Saturday night.

The Wizards looked as though they might make a playoff push during a recent four-game winning streak, but they've stumbled since with a season high-tying four straight defeats.

They remained 2 1/2 games back of the Eastern Conference's final spot following Friday's 114-93 loss at Utah when eighth-place Detroit and ninth-place Chicago also went down.

'We didn't come out with any sense of urgency,' coach Randy Wittman said. 'I don't know how we can do that with 18 games left."

Washington (30-34) had played better defensively during a 7-2 stretch, allowing an average of 98.4 points and a 43.6 field-goal percentage. However, that effort has slipped while the club has surrendered 109.5 points on 48 percent during its losing streak.

"We can't keep anybody in front of us," Wittman said.

The Wizards certainly had trouble slowing the Nuggets in a 117-113 home loss Jan. 28. Danilo Gallinari finished with 26 points, Mudiay added 20 and Nikola Jokic had 15 with 10 rebounds as Denver shot 50.6 percent and made 9 for 18 from beyond the arc.

Gallinari won't be around for this one due to torn ligaments in his ankle, but Mudiay looks to build on a career-high 30-point effort in Thursday's 116-98 home win over Phoenix. He's averaged 21.6 points while hitting 11 for 25 from long distance in his last five games.

'Coach has confidence in me and told me to stay aggressive," the seventh overall pick said after Denver matched a season high with its third consecutive victory.

Mudiay seemed to soak in every moment of his first encounter with Wall in January.

"He said to me during the game, `John Wall is the quickest guy I've ever played against,"' coach Michael Malone said. "And I said, `You're not even guarding him, Gary Harris is."'

Harris will likely be matched up on Washington's top scorer again after holding him to 17 points on 5-of-17 shooting. Garrett Temple had 20 for the Wizards and Bradley Beal scored 17. Beal, however, could miss a third straight game because of a lingering hip injury.

Markieff Morris is averaging 12.3 points and 7.2 rebounds in six games as a starter.

Denver (27-38) has tightened things up in its last two games, allowing an average of 96 points on 40.2 percent shooting - including 12 of 46 (26.1 percent) from 3-point range. The club had been giving up 104.5 and a 46.1 field-goal percentage heading into those contests.

The Nuggets, six games back of the West's final playoff spot, have scored 115.8 per game in their last five. Jokic has chipped in by averaging 16.5 points and 10.8 boards in his past four.

They had dropped four of six in this series before winning in January.

    • Preview: Magic (28-36) at Trail Blazers (34-32)
      Date: March 12, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

The Portland Trail Blazers came up well short in their bid for a second win in three weeks against the NBA's best team.

Next up is the struggling Orlando Magic, but two other Western Conference powers loom close behind.

With a difficult trip waiting around the corner, the Trail Blazers look to snap out of their recent funk when they host the Magic on Saturday night.

Portland (34-32) is not far removed from an 18-4 stretch which included a statement-making 137-105 win over league-leading Golden State on Feb. 19.

That storyline has flipped quickly, though, after Friday's 128-112 loss to the Warriors marked the Trail Blazers' fourth defeat in five games and dropped them back into a congested West playoff race.

Portland currently holds the sixth seed, just one-half game ahead of Houston and Dallas and three and a half up on Utah.

With Damian Lillard scoring in bunches and a defensive improvement on the other end of the floor, Portland seemed in control of its postseason fate, but Friday's blowout was a completely different story.

Lillard made only 5 of 19 shots for 17 points back in his native Oakland, and the Warriors jumped out to an 81-61 lead at halftime and led by as many as 32 points.

Sure, it was against the league's highest-scoring team, but Portland has suddenly surrendered 118.6 points per game over its last five after holding opponents to 99.7 over the previous 15.

The Blazers follow this contest with a four-game trip beginning at Oklahoma City on Monday before a visit to San Antonio on Thursday. They then head to New Orleans on Friday before closing the swing March 20 in Dallas.

"We'll check out what we can do better tomorrow on the film and what we did well and just bounce back against Orlando," Meyers Leonard told the team's official website. "That's the main thing right now, Orlando. This game is over with, Orlando is huge for us tomorrow night."

Lillard was bound to fall back to earth at some point, but he just so happened to plummet against a team he torched for 51 points last month. That was part of a stretch in which he averaged 33.3 points over 13 games, including 41 in Tuesday's 116-109 win over Washington - Portland's 10th win in its last 12 home games.

Lillard will try to regroup against a team he's never scored 20 points against. He's averaged 14.7 versus the Magic in seven career meetings, and he made just 4 of 15 shots and 2 of 9 from 3-point range for 19 points in a 102-94 loss Dec. 18.

Orlando (28-36) has won the last two in this series, though the Trail Blazers have taken three straight and five of six in Portland.

Despite Friday's 107-100 victory at Sacramento, the Magic are one of the league's worst teams since Jan. 1 with a 9-23 record.

Three teams and four and a half games stand in the way of the East's eighth and final playoff spot, though Orlando isn't ready to count itself out of a postseason push.

"We want it, everybody in this locker room wants it," Aaron Gordon said. "A couple of games here and there and we can be right back in it. We just have to keep focused. We need to make sure we're doing the right things to make that push."

Gordon scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while helping the Magic snap a four-game skid on the road against the Kings.

      • Preview: Suns (17-48) at Warriors (58-6)
        Date: March 12, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

Phoenix put up strong defensive efforts in consecutive wins, then regressed right back to its porous self in back-to-back defeats.

A third straight seems likely with a stop in Golden State Saturday night as the Warriors try for a 48th straight home victory as well as a seventh straight over the Suns.

Golden State (58-6) scored an NBA season-high 81 points in the first half and moved to 3-0 to start a six-game homestand with Friday's 128-112 win over Portland as the Warriors and Trail Blazers combined for an NBA-record 37 3-pointers. On the homestand, the Warriors have averaged 120.7 points and hit 44.8 percent from 3-point range with an average of 15.7 makes per game. And with Phoenix followed in by New Orleans and New York, extending their NBA-record home winning streak to 50 seems almost inevitable.

Klay Thompson had 37 points and Stephen Curry scored 34 with the former joining his teammate as the only players to make 200 3-pointers in four straight seasons. They scored 30 or more points in the same game for the sixth time in their careers.

Since going 0 of 8 from 3-point range in Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, Thompson has made 18 of 30 in the three straight wins while averaging 29.0 points per game.

"Klay came out blazing. Me, not so much," said Curry, who sold himself short after scoring 23 first-half points. "It took me a while to get into it. He brought a lot of energy on both ends of the floor. We kind of fed off of that."

It sounds like Golden State might again be without Andre Iguodala, who will reportedly have an MRI on his left ankle tomorrow. X-rays after the game were negative. The forward had missed three of the last six games with a hamstring injury.

The Warriors' three wins this season over the Suns have come by an average score of 125.0-107.7 with Golden State shooting 46.4 percent from 3-point range with 17.0 makes per game. Draymond Green has triple-doubles in two of the three while averaging 13.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 7.7 assists. The Warriors have also won the last eight home matchups with the Suns last winning in Oakland in 2010-11.

Phoenix (17-48) won in Orlando and Memphis last weekend while limiting those teams to 92.0 points on 37.0 percent. It followed a 1-15 span on which the Suns allowed 111.4 points on 47.0 percent and 39.4 from 3-point range.

In Wednesday's 128-97 home loss to New York and Thursday's 116-98 defeat in Denver, they became themselves again and allowed those teams to hit 52.0 percent and 54.7 from long range.

As a result, Devin Booker's offensive outpouring has been wasted. The 19-year-old became the second teenager in data available back to the 1963-64 season to score 30-plus points in consecutive games. The other was LeBron James in 2003-04 with a point more than Booker's 67.

A career-high 35 of those came against the Nuggets, 25 of which came in the second half. The rookie has reached at least 32 points in three of his last five games while averaging 28.4 on 48.5 percent from the field.

"I was more aggressive," he said of his second-half effort. "I saw them playing me tighter so I had to find other shots in transition."

Brandon Knight scored 10 points in 25 minutes in his first game since Jan. 19, but it sounds like interim coach Earl Watson will ease him back into his regular minutes.

"He had a sports hernia, a slight tear, so you know that's serious," Watson said. "That injury kind of ended my career, so I understand the seriousness of that injury."

        • Inside the Paint - Saturday
          March 12, 2016

Saturday’s spotlight game takes place from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas as the Spurs and Thunder meet in a Western Conference battle.

Oddsmakers opened the Spurs as eight-point home favorites and this is the largest number that the Thunder have been given all season.

The number seems fair considering San Antonio has won 40 straight games at this venue and that includes a 31-0 straight up record this season. Against the spread, the Spurs have gone 19-11-1 (63%) and only the Detroit Pistons (19-10-1 ATS) have produced better numbers at home versus the number.

San Antonio leads the league with 41 victories by 10-plus points and a lot of that success comes from its defense. The Spurs quietly lead the league in defensive scoring, allowing 92.4 points per game and that number drops to 90.6 PPG at home.

As an underdog, Oklahoma City has lived up to the expectations of the oddsmakers and failed to win in these spots. The Thunder have been catching points seven times this season and they’ve gone 1-6 SU and 1-5-1 ATS, the lone win coming at Utah in late November when the status of Kevin Durant was up in the air.

Even though the above betting situations could have you leaning San Antonio, the Thunder did notch a 112-106 victory over the Spurs on opening night as four-point home favorites. A lot has certainly changed since Oct. 28 and it’s apparent that San Antonio remains the top contender to knock Golden State off its championship throne.

Oklahoma City will be facing a back-to-back spot tonight after losing 99-96 at home on Friday to Minnesota as a 12-point favorite. The Thunder have gone 5-5 SU and 4-6 ATS on zero days rest this season and that includes a 2-5 SU and 2-6 ATS mark on the road.

Including the loss to the Timberwolves last night, the Thunder have gone 4-7 SU and 4-6-1 ATS since the All-Star break. Losing to non-playoff teams is rare for OKC, who has gone 28-5 against teams with losing records. To be fair, the Spurs haven’t been great at the betting counter lately either. San Antonio is 10-2 SU and 5-7 ATS since the break.

San Antonio (35-29-1) and Oklahoma City (35-29) have both leaned to the ‘under’ but four of the last five encounters between the pair have cashed to the high side.

Since ABC started producing its nationally televised game on Saturday, we’ve haven’t had many great games outside of the classic a couple weeks ago between the Warriors and Thunder.

          Jan. 23 - Chicago (+10 ½) 96 at Cleveland 83 Under 202
          Jan. 30 - Cleveland (+1 ½) 117 vs. San Antonio 103 – Over 202 ½
          Feb. 6 - Golden State (-8) 116 vs. Oklahoma City 108 – Under 233 ½
          Feb. 20 - Golden State (-4) 115 at L.A. Clippers 112 – Under 228 ½
          Feb. 27 - Golden State (-3 ½) 121 at Oklahoma City 118 – Over 233 ½ - OT
          Mar. 6 – Chicago (-1 ½) 108 vs. Houston 100 – Under 216

Based on the above results, favorites have gone 4-2 SU and 3-3 ATS while total bettors have seen the ‘under’ go 4-2 and it could be 5-1 if the Warriors-Thunder matchup doesn’t go into overtime. The Spurs (0-1) and Thunder (0-2) are a combined 0-3 in the featured games.

We have three other late-night games slated for Saturday and below is my quick handicap.

          Washington at Denver

This game looks like a trap to me and I believe a lot of bettors will be riding Denver, who has won and covered four of its last five game at home. The offense has been on fire during this span, averaging 115.8 PPG. After this game, the Nuggets head to the East Coast for the final time this season when they play five straight on the road. For whatever reason, some clubs don’t perform well in the last game of a long homestand and some pundits believe they’re already thinking ahead with their bags packed at the arena.

Making a case against Washington is easy since they’ve dropped four straight games, both SU and ATS. Last night, the Wizards were run 114-93 by the Jazz in wire-to-wire fashion. The club has gone 5-11 SU and 6-9-1 ATS on zero days rest this season.

In late January, Denver earned a 117-113 win at Washington as a 7 ½-point road underdog. The ‘over’ (212) easily connected. Despite that loss, the Wizards should be confident for this game knowing they’ve gone 2-1 in their last three trips to the Pepsi Center and the one loss came by three points.

          Orlando at Portland

This matchup could be viewed as Trap Game – Part II. The Trail Blazers are the much better team and the Magic’s depth is depleted in the frontcourt without forward Nikola Vucevic. However, it should be noted that Orlando has won five of the last eight meetings against Portland and it’s covered seven of those games as well. The Magic earned a 102-94 decision over the Blazers on Dec. 18 as four-point home favorites.

Both clubs played last night as Orlando dropped Sacramento 107-100 on the road while Portland was blasted at Golden State, 128-112. The Magic have struggled in back-to-back spots (4-9 SU, 7-6 ATS) and the Trail Blazers (3-11 SU, 5-9 ATS) haven’t been much better.

What’s a little surprising is that Portland is 1-4 at home on zero days rest and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Magic catch them in a letdown spot after playing the Warriors last night.

          Phoenix at Golden State

I thought the Warriors would be laying an easy 20-plus points in this game and I’m surprised the number is only Golden State -18. If the Warriors hit their shots and wanted to win this game, they could be covering this number midway through the second quarter.

Golden State has gone 15-1 SU and 10-6 ATS on zero days rest this season and they’ve been handed their fair share of backdoor covers as well. The Warriors have gone 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS versus the Suns this season, winning by 19 and 25 points in the first two meetings and recently by eight points (112-104) on Feb. 10 in the desert.

The Suns have a few nice parts but if they don’t hit a high percentage of outside shots, they have absolutely no chance to stay within 18. After showing some promise in back-to-back wins over the Magic and Grizzlies, the club allowed 128 and 116 in losses to the Knicks and Nuggets respectively and those teams aren’t great offensively.

Golden State might be on its way to break regular season win records but its recent ATS run (5-7) since the All-Star break certainly won’t create many fans in the sportsbooks.

          • Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Looking at six of the conference tournament finals for Saturday......

-- C-USA-- Middle Tennessee-Old Dominion-- Blue Raiders won the Alaskan Shootout back in November.

-- Big East-- Seton Hall-Villanova-- Kevin Willard rewards his bosses' patience.

-- Big X-- Kansas-WestVirginia-- This will be road game for Mountaineers.

-- MAC-- Buffalo-Akron-- Zips' coach was Lebron James' high school coach.

-- ACC-- Virginia-North Carolina-- These two could meet again at Final Four.

-- Pac-12-- Oregon-Utah-- Ducks already spanked Utah twice this season.

            **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Wrapping up a full Friday......

            13) UConn 104, Cincinnati 97 4OT-- This game tops the 6OT game in the Big East a few years ago, since UConn drained a 60-footer at the buzzer of the third OT to send the game to another five minutes. Not sure how the Huskies will react today against a Temple team they've already lost to twice, but this game was special.

            12) West Virginia 69, Oklahoma 67-- Buddy Hield drained a shot from just inside half-court at the buzzer, but it was ruled to be a split-second too late and Bob Huggins makes his first conference tourney final since the 2010 Big East tournament.

            11) Oregon 95, Arizona 89 OT-- Wildcats scored four points in last 0:00.6 of game to send it to OT, but Ducks prevailed in OT, sweeping season series with Arizona. Oregon was 10-19 on arc. Arizona has still only won this tournament once since '03.

            10) Michigan 72, Indiana 69-- One of Michigan's scrubs hit a 3 from the deep corner at the buzzer and was immediately engulfed by jubilant teammates-- this was so early in the day I almost forgot about it. Michigan could be off the bubble now.

            9) Word leaked out that Tulane will fire basketball coach Ed Conroy as soon as their season is over, but there is one small problem:

News spreads quickly these days; people were telling Conroy during the game yesterday that he was being fired. Then his 13-point underdog Green Wave shocked Houston 72-69 and made the AAC semifinals- they play 6-seed Memphis today.

So what if Tulane wins the next two days and makes the NCAAs? Then what?

            8) Conroy's uncle was the great writer Pat Conroy who passed away last week- he wrote Conrack, The Great Santini and Prince of Tides.

            7) Denver fired hoop coach Joe Scott; this will be a tougher rebuild job than normal, since Scott ran the Princeton offense, so you'll need to recruit players who are suited to a more traditional style of play. Summit League is an underrated conference.

            6) Baltimore Orioles are 0-10 this spring, with two ties. I went out of my way the other day to say that this doesn't mean much, but at some point, it has to be at least a little troubling, doesn't it?

Sidebar: I am constantly amazed that people bet on exhibition baseball. Why?

            5) Prince Fielder was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea, which had gotten so bad his doctors were alarmed by it. We all need our proper rest, especially athletes.

            4) Beach volleyball is a college sport? Since when? If you're a high school kid out there and are trying to choose a college, pick one that has a beach volleyball team. I'm guessing those schools are more fun than most schools.

            3) Denver Broncos won the Super Bowl 34 days ago; Friday they traded for Mark Sanchez, putting the celebrations to a complete halt immediately. Quarterback is an important position, or so I'm told. Trading for Sanchez is an emphatic red flag.

            2) San Antonio Spurs are 14-0 this season on back end of a back/back, only team not to lose one of them- they're 9-5 vs spread in those games. .

            1) Since 2012, only one NFL team has used two #1 picks on a QB, and Cleveland cut both of those picks after only two seasons-- Brandon Weeden and Johnny Manziel.

                            • Preview: Cavaliers (46-18) at Clippers (42-22)
                              Date: March 13, 2016 3:30 PM EDT

With Kyrie Irving leading the way, the Cleveland Cavaliers have continued their recent mastery of Western Conference teams while putting aside last month's road woes.

After playing two of the West's lowlier clubs, the Cavaliers will step up in competition Sunday against the Los Angeles Clippers, one of the league's most successful teams against the East.

Irving has totaled 56 points in the first two of four games out West and had 26 in a 120-108 victory against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday. The point guard is also averaging 25.8 points and shooting 53.5 percent in his past four contests.

"I feel like this is a perfect time to find my rhythm, especially on this road trip," he said. "Over the last few games, I have tried to be aggressive and live off the confidence my teammates have in me."

The Cavaliers (46-18) are 10-1 in their last 11 against the West, a stretch that began with a 115-102 win over the Clippers on Jan. 21 and followed a 132-98 drubbing by Golden State on Jan. 18 that heavily contributed to coach David Blatt's firing. They have also won in eight of their last nine visits to those teams.

Cleveland is also 5-1 since losing three of four to close February, and could get Kevin Love back after a one-game absence due to knee issues.

Channing Frye had a season-high 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting in his place Thursday.

"Hopefully, Kevin comes back but I'm going to go out and be ready regardless," Frye said.

The Cavaliers will try to add a fourth consecutive win over the Clippers (42-22). They went 13 of 28 from 3-point range and shot 50.6 percent overall in the victory in January.

That loss was one of just four in Los Angeles' last 21 games against East opponents, and the Clippers are 20-7 in interconference play.

"(Cleveland is) tough. They're playing good basketball. They have so many players who can make players. That makes them so dangerous," coach Doc Rivers said. "It's going to be a tough matchup for us."

The Clippers topped New York 101-94 on Friday after blowing a 15-point lead, their third win in four home contests.

"I think I have said this for 10 years, but people do not respect how hard it is to win a game in this league," Rivers said. "Just because a team has a bad record - and you have everything to play for - they didn't just wake up this morning and say: 'Let's lose.'"

Chris Paul had 24 points and has 31 assists his last two games after dishing out 15 on Friday. J.J. Redick reached the 20-point mark in his third straight.

Paul, averaging 23.4 points on 51.7 percent shooting in his last seven games, had 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting in the loss in Cleveland.

Irving scored 37 in the Cavaliers' most recent road game against the Clippers, a 126-121 victory Jan. 16, 2015. LeBron James provided 32 points and has scored 30 or more in each of his last three visits.

Cleveland has won in six of its past eight road games against the Clippers.

                              • B]Preview: Pacers (34-30) at Hawks (36-29)[/B]
                                Date: March 13, 2016 6:00 PM EDT

First to 100 points wins, and a lower offer might suffice.

It's been 11 meetings since Indiana and Atlanta played a game that required a triple-digit point total for a victory, and the Pacers visit the Hawks on Sunday hoping for a third win in the four-game season series as well as a fourth straight overall in a game among teams jockeying for Eastern Conference playoff positions.

The Pacers (35-30) have won two of three meetings this season after the Hawks won the previous four as part of a 6-5 span in the series during which the losing team has never scored more than 98 points.

The same goes for the last 10 scores at the end of regulation for the Hawks (37-29) and their opponents. Saturday's 95-83 home win over Memphis kept them one and a half games up on Indiana for the East's No. 6 seed.

But it's the Pacers who are streaking following Saturday's 112-105 win in Dallas with Paul George scoring 20 points and former Mavericks guard Monta Ellis adding 17 on 7-of-13 shooting. Ellis has averaged 20.0 points and shot 50.0 percent on the winning streak, as well as 20.7 while hitting 12 of 23 from 3-point range against Atlanta.

"That's the reason why we got him. It's so teams aren't just dialed in on me," George told the team's official website. "We've got more weapons and more scorers on this team than just me. He definitely helps out a lot. I try to help him as well by staying aggressive and keeping defenses locked in on me."

In the last four games, George has managed 29.0 points and made 44.8 percent of his 3-pointers, though only 11.8 of those points are coming in the first half. He scored 18 of his 20 in the second against the Grizzlies.

"I knew I had to find a rhythm for myself," George said. "It was just get the ball and go, and create offense for myself. I was trying to get other guys going. We got some good looks. I thought they were really dialed in to me on the strong side, so I tried to get everything on weak side."

In the last four games between the Pacers and Hawks, they've each won two home games with a 391-391 total score.

George had 31 points in a 102-96 loss Feb. 5 but has been held to 17.0 points on 34.8 percent in this season's matchups. Atlanta got 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting from Paul Millsap in that win, and the forward also led the Hawks with 21 on Saturday.

Atlanta limited Memphis to 34.7 percent and 6 of 23 from 3-point range. Over a 6-2 span, the Hawks have held opponents to 89.8 points on 37.8 percent and 27.7 from long range with five of those teams failing to top 88.

It was the ninth straight game in which no Atlanta player reached 25 points, a situation the team embraces. The Hawks won 60 games last season with six players averaging double figures ranging from 10.0 to 16.7.

"That's Hawks basketball," said Millsap, who was one of five players with at least 13 points.

Thabo Sefolosha was another, and the forward recorded his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds - the kind of performances Millsap is referencing with the phrase "Hawks basketball."

"Thabo did a great job for us," Millsap said. "He set the tone for us - rebounding, blocking shots, defense, name it."

Jeff Teague, meanwhile, continued to excel from 3-point range, hitting 4 of 7 on his way to 18 points. The point guard is averaging 18.5 while making 47.6 percent of his 3s in the last four games.
