  • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six of the better minor league prospects for the San Diego Padres.......

    1) Javier Guerra, SS-- Acquired from Boston in Craig Kimbrel trade.

    2) Manuel Margot, OF-- Better defensively than with the bat.

    3) Hunter Renfroe, OF-- Led Texas League in outfield assists LY.

    6) Travis Jankowski, OF-- Hit .211 in 90 major league ABs last season.

    7) Colin Rea, P-- Allowed 29 hits in 32 big league IP last year.

    23) Rymer Liriano, OF-- Had .383 OB% in full year at AAA El Paso LY

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

    13) Oddest fact about Peyton Manning's great career-- he played in four Super Bowls, for four different head coaches. Even more unusual than Joe Gibbs winning his three Super Bowls with three different quarterbacks.

    12) Northern Iowa 56, Evansville 54-- Panthers led by 14 at the half, blew the lead, but they advance to NCAAs thanks to a fortunate bounce on a last-second shot.

    11) North Dakota State 60, IUPUI 45-- Bison advance because partly because IUPUI suspended its best player for undisclosed reasons. Sometimes you need to get lucky.

    10) Hofstra 70, Wm & Mary 67-- Last year, Hofstra lost three times to Tribe, with a double OT loss in this round. This year, Hofstra beat W&M three times- their seniors Green/Tanksley combined for 37 points here. Hofstra now plays NC-Wilmington in CAA finals. Teams split their games this year-- both teams that lost blew double digit leads, so tonight's final should be interesting.

    9) Iona 81, Siena 70-- Gaels win on Siena's home court- road team won all three series games this year- to reach finals against Monmouth, which got leading rebounder Jones back yesterday-- he missed the Hawks' loss to Iona last month. .

    8) Southern Conference-- Chattanooga-East Tennessee State is final tonight; ETSU got swept by the Mocs this year, losing by 10-8 points. Buccaneers won 10 of their last 11 games, with only loss in the rematch with Chattanooga.

    7) One of the referees at the Southern Conference tournament is Bruce Benedict, who played 12 years in the major leagues with the Atlanta Braves, where he hit .240 as a catcher. I spent most of his career rooting against him. Why?

My favorite ballplayer while Benedict was playing was Biff Pocoroba; if you know me, you know why. Pocoroba was also a catcher on the Braves and he competed with Benedict for playing time, so I spent several years hoping Benedict failed badly. I'm an idiot, I know- they were both very average, but together a decent platoon unit.

    6) Kid named Wendall Williams from College of Cumberlands (I've never heard of it) ran a 4.19 40-yard dash at a tryout in Minnesota. Kid is a track star, hasn't played a lot of football-- he caught 15 passes for 457 yards (with 8 TDs) at an NAIA school. If Al Davis were still alive, Mr Williams would damn sure be a Raider next year.

    5) Cincinnati 61, SMU 54-- Mustangs' season is over; both them and Louisville went out meekly this weekend, proving how mental the game can be- they become ineligible for the postseason, and things go south fairly quickly. Human nature.

    4) Fresno State is 22-9, 13-5 in conference-- they've had a great year, are #2 seed in Mountain West, but if UNLV beats Air Force in a preliminary game, Fresno will have to play the Rebels in their first tournament game, in the Thomas & Mack Center. Not the best situation, but playing the conference tournament in Las Vegas is the only way the league would make any money. I've heard that somewhere before........

    3) Golfer Steven Bowditch is struggling badly with his game, but he was still qualified for the World Golf tournament and he played all 72 holes (there is no cut in tourneys with small fields like this)........in +37. Thats 81-80-80-84 but he banked $48,000.

    2) City of San Jose is owed $6.8M in unpaid library fines; so if you live in San Jose and you have an overdue book, pay your damn fine already.

    1) Gonzaga-BYU figures to be very good tonight, from Las Vegas, semifinals of the WCC from Orleans Arena. Dick Vitale is going to do the WCC tourney the next two nights which should be very interesting. Mr Vitale isn't ESPN's #1 guy anymore and he can only do one game per night because he had throat surgery couple years ago, but this should be fun, for both him and the viewers.

                • Preview: Nets (18-45) at Raptors (41-20)
                  Date: March 08, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

For the first time in two months, the Toronto Raptors are coming off a loss at home.

The last time they were in that situation, they responded with a victory over the Brooklyn Nets that started the longest home winning streak in franchise history.

At the midpoint of a seven-game homestand, the Raptors again look to bounce back with a victory over the Nets when they meet Tuesday night.

It appeared Toronto (41-20) would have little trouble extending its home winning streak to 13 on Sunday, leading a Houston team playing the second of a back-to-back by 18 midway through the second quarter. The Raptors, though, had no answer for James Harden after halftime, as he scored 30 of his 40 points in the final 24 minutes to lead the Rockets to a 113-107 win.

Toronto coach Dwane Casey wasn't surprised by the inability to protect a big lead after watching his team blow almost all of a 14-point fourth-quarter advantage in Friday's 117-115 victory over Portland.

"That's been our weakness all year," Casey said. "I've said that millions of times. We've luckily won some of those games, but I've always said it's going to come back and bite us. We have to keep the same intensity when we get leads, the same quality of possessions offensively."

Defense was the biggest problem Sunday, however, as the Rockets shot 58.3 percent and made nine of 16 3-pointers in the second half. Houston had 62 second-half points - the third time in four games an opponent reached that number.

Toronto is routinely getting burned from beyond the arc, allowing each of its last five opponents to make at least 10 3-pointers while shooting 44.6 percent.

"It's the kind of thing that has been occurring too much for us," point guard Kyle Lowry said. "We have to get better defensively. We are giving up 100 points like it's nothing."

The Nets (18-45) had almost given up 100 points through three quarters Saturday at Minnesota, allowing the Timberwolves to shoot a franchise-record 68.4 percent in a 132-118 loss.

In fairness, interim coach Tony Brown opted to rest top interior defensive player Brook Lopez and 6-foot-8 power forward Thaddeus Young with Brooklyn playing on the second night of a back-to-back. Thomas Robinson had 18 points and 17 rebounds but Brooklyn's starters were outscored 95-56.

'I think our other guys who got a chance to play, they have to show more energy, play with a little bit more effort and play together on both ends of the floor,' Brown said.

Lopez had 29 points in Brooklyn's last game against Toronto on Jan. 18, but was outdone by the Raptors' high-scoring backcourt as Lowry had 31 and DeMar DeRozan added 30. Toronto won 112-100 for the first of 12 straight home victories.

DeRozan recorded back-to-back 30-point games before scoring 19 with five turnovers - his most since Dec. 22 - versus Houston.

Lowry had 17 points against the Rockets after averaging 34.3 and 65.5 percent shooting in his previous three.

Jonas Valanciunas had one of his best games of the season in a 91-74 win at Brooklyn on Jan. 6, scoring 22, but he was held to six on 3-of-11 shooting in the rematch 12 days later.

The Nets, losers of three of four regular-season games in Toronto, are 3-4 on a season-high nine-game trip to match the number of wins from their previous 18 road contests.

                  • Preview: Spurs (53-9) at Timberwolves (20-43)
                    Date: March 08, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

San Antonio insisted it wouldn't let coach Gregg Popovich's absence affect its play after learning the news prior to a brief road trip. Then the Spurs suffered through their worst shooting performance of the season and had their eight-game winning streak snapped.

Popovich won't be on the bench for Tuesday night's visit to Minnesota either as San Antonio looks to bounce back by beating the Timberwolves for the seventh consecutive meeting.

The Spurs (53-10) announced at Monday morning's shootaround that assistant Ettore Messina would act as head coach during their two-game trip while Popovich attends to a family medical situation. Messina said the players knew before departing San Antonio that Popovich wouldn't accompany them.

The club didn't release details, but Popovich is expected to return Thursday against Chicago at home. Reserve forward David West told reporters before the game he didn't expect anything to change against Indiana, but the Spurs shot 35.4 percent from the field - including a season worst-tying 14.3 percent from 3-point range - in a 99-91 loss to his former team.

San Antonio's 96 shots set a season high and its 28 3-point attempts tied its most of the season, with Kawhi Leonard going 1 for 7 from deep. Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge (12 rebounds) scored 23 points apiece for San Antonio, which entered the game shooting a league-best 49.1 percent from the floor.

The Spurs' 13 points in the first marked their fewest of any quarter this season. They also had a six-game road winning streak snapped as Tony Parker had only six points and left early with a bruised left toe.

'We were getting some good looks, it just happens sometimes,' Messina said. 'We were just not as sharp as we could have been.'

The Spurs have shot 52.6 percent while winning both meetings with the Timberwolves (20-44) this season - 108-83 on Dec. 23 and 101-95 on Dec. 28. They haven't lost in the series since falling at Minnesota on April 8, 2014.

Rookie Karl-Anthony Towns has posted a double-double in each matchup and ranks among the league leaders with 36. He finished with 28 points and 14 rebounds in a 108-103 loss at Charlotte and is averaging 25.7 points and shooting 70 percent from the floor over his last three.

Minnesota has dropped three of its last four, though, and has allowed an average of 112.4 points while giving up triple digits in 15 straight. The Wolves' last 28 opponents have shot at least 42.1 percent from the field and they rank among the worst in the league with a field-goal percentage defense of 46.1 on the season.

Andrew Wiggins has done his best to make up for the defensive issues over the last two, scoring 26 points in Saturday's win over Brooklyn before netting 25 on Monday. He shot 67.7 percent while making each of his three 3-point attempts, but he's hit 35.1 percent from the floor in six career games against the Spurs.

"The thing that got us was we had times we weren't scoring and we weren't playing defense,' Wiggins said. 'We played hard. The whole team, we gave it our all.'

Minnesota waived veteran guard Kevin Martin on Wednesday, and Martin has agreed to join San Antonio. The Spurs, though, haven't waived anyone to open a roster spot, leaving Martin's team debut uncertain.

                    • Preview: Knicks (26-38) at Nuggets (25-38)
                      Date: March 08, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

The last time New York won in Denver, Carmelo Anthony did all he could to stop it.

The forward has been on the other side of the matchup for the last three of the Knicks' seven-game road skid against the Nuggets, something he'll try to help end Tuesday night.

The Knicks' 109-107 win in Denver on Nov. 8, 2006, featured 37 points and eight assists from Anthony, and he then led the Nuggets to four straight home wins over New York before being traded to the Knicks in a 13-player, three-team deal on Feb. 22, 2011.

His presence hasn't been nearly as impactful on his current side with 18.0 points on 32.4 percent shooting while playing in two of the three road meetings since the trade. In the four before that with Denver, he'd averaged 32.3 points on 56.3 percent.

Should he get that first road win against the Nuggets (25-38), he'll have helped the Knicks (26-38) to their first consecutive wins since Jan. 18 and 20 - which have been followed by a 4-16 record after Saturday's 102-89 home win over Detroit.

There's very little hope of a run at a playoff spot, but interim coach Kurt Rambis isn't yet looking at this season as the 2016-17 preseason. The Knicks are 3-7 since he took over.

"Someone asked me a while ago, is there going to be a point in the season where you just go, 'OK, we're going to play the young guys?' I'm not there yet,' said Rambis, whose team has won once in its last 10 road games. "And if management tells me at some point in time we're there, and they want to make that change, that's something I'll defer to them. But as a coach, I'm not there yet so I'm going to go with the guys I trust and have the experience right now."

He's a little limited by the injury to Kristaps Porzingis, who missed the win with a leg injury and is considered day to day.

But the Knicks were sharp without their standout rookie and co-No. 2 scorer, shooting 60 percent in the first half and pulling away when the Pistons got within four points early in the fourth quarter. Anthony led all scorers with 24, while Robin Lopez had 21 on 9-of-12 shooting. Arron Afflalo, Anthony's former Denver teammate, added 20 and is averaging 16.7 on 68.8 percent in March to match Porzingis with 14.0 points per game.

"I think we did a great job as a team of staying consistent with our focus, whereas yesterday, Boston made a couple of runs, especially near the end, and we reacted the wrong way," said Lopez, who's averaging 14.4 points and 10.0 rebounds while shooting 62.7 percent in his last 14 games. "Today, whenever Detroit made a run, we usually had a pretty good response."

Denver has won the last two overall matchups, including a 101-96 final in New York on Feb. 7, though that came with Danilo Gallinari scoring 19 points. The Nuggets' top scorer has since been sidelined with two torn ligaments in his ankle suffered on Feb. 26, and the team is 2-2 without him on a seven-game homestand after Sunday's 116-114 overtime win over Dallas.

It was their third overtime game in their last five and featured 25 points and 20 rebounds from Kenneth Faried. The forward has five double-doubles in his last six games while averaging 18.2 points and 11.2 rebounds.

"Coming into this game we were like 1-4 in overtime, so getting this win was definitely huge, especially against a good team like Dallas," said Emmanuel Mudiay, who's averaged 21.0 points and 7.3 assists in his last three games.

                      • Preview: Hawks (35-28) at Jazz (29-33)
                        Date: March 08, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

The Atlanta Hawks appear to have put their recent struggles behind. The Utah Jazz hope they've finally gotten past theirs.

As the Hawks aim to maintain their quality play on their road trip, the Jazz attempt to build on a much-needed win in Tuesday night's return home.

The Hawks' playoff prospects looked to be on shaky ground following three consecutive home defeats out of the All-Star break, but they're on more solid footing after recording four wins in their last five. The surge has moved Atlanta (35-28) to fifth in the Eastern Conference and two games back of first-place Miami in the Southeast Division.

While they've statistically been the NBA's best defensive team since mid-January, the Hawks have shown increased efficiency on the offensive end of late. They've shot 48.4 percent overall and 41.0 percent from 3-point range over their last four, highlighted by a 13-of-28 effort from beyond the arc in Friday's 106-77 rout of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Atlanta displayed some resiliency as well the next night, outscoring the Los Angeles Clippers 25-9 over the final eight minutes to rally for a 107-97 win.

"To beat a team that is playing as well as they have been, I think this was good for our group," coach Mike Budenholzer said. "We needed a good, quality win, especially on the road. To finish it on a run and execute down the stretch and get stops down the stretch, it's a huge key in our league."

The game also saw bounce-back performances from Jeff Teague and Paul Millsap, both of whom had been slumping. Millsap grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds along with 20 points and Teague added 22 points while helping limit Chris Paul to two in the second half.

'I thought Jeff was great at both ends,' Budenholzer said. 'He set the tone with his aggressiveness on Chris Paul on the pick-and-rolls.'

The Hawks have yielded league lows of 96.7 points per game and a 41.6 percent field goal rate since Jan. 16. They've eclipsed those numbers during their 4-1 stretch, holding opponents to 89.4 points and a 37.4 percent shooting.

That presents a challenge for Utah (29-33), which averaged a mere 90.2 points during a season-high five-game skid from Feb. 25-March 4 that dropped it to ninth in the West. The Jazz were much better in Saturday's finale of a four-game trip, shooting 47.4 percent while dominating the glass in a crucial 106-94 victory over depleted New Orleans.

'It was a game we definitely needed,' said forward Derrick Favors, who compiled 28 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks to complement Gordon Hayward's 24 points.

Rudy Gobert added 18 rebounds to help Utah, 1 1/2 games behind eighth-place Houston, finish with a 53-32 advantage on the boards. The 7-foot-1 center is averaging 15.0 over his last five.

Favors also was a factor in the Jazz's 97-96 win at Atlanta on Nov. 15, totaling 23 points and nine rebounds to counter Millsap's 28 points and enable Utah to halt an eight-game series losing streak. The Jazz last swept Atlanta in 2006-07.

Teague missed that game with a sore left ankle. The point guard was instrumental to the Hawks' two 2014-15 wins over Utah, averaging 23.0 points, 8.0 assists and 3.0 steals.

                        • Preview: Wizards (30-32) at Trail Blazers (33-31)
                          Date: March 08, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

The Portland Trail Blazers couldn't overcome a porous defense in the back half of their season-high road trip but hasn't had trouble winning despite similar defensive issues at home.

They may have enough to outlast Washington on Tuesday night with one of the Wizards' leading scorers sitting out.

Portland (33-31) allowed an average of 94.0 points in a 3-0 start to a six-game trek but gave up 118.7 in three ensuing defeats.

"We knew it was going to be a tough trip," said coach Terry Stotts, whose team had also won 14 of 16 before its current skid. "It was good to get the three wins and certainly after winning the first three you hope to get another win or two on the road, but we're going to be tested from here on out."

The Blazers let Detroit shoot 52.4 percent and a season-best 12 of 22 from 3-point range in a 123-103 loss Sunday.

"We didn't come out with the right type of focus I guess and the right amount of intensity on the defensive end," said point guard Damian Lillard, who had 26 points after scoring 50 against Toronto on Friday. "We could have done a much better job helping each other out as a group. We just didn't do enough things well enough."

Portland has allowed 108.7 points per game in its last six at home but has averaged 114.7 at the other end to win four times. The Blazers are averaging 110.5 points in their last 12 overall games, 8.5 more than in their first 52.

The Wizards (30-32) will be forced to try to keep up with Portland while Bradley Beal sits because of a sprained hip. The guard, averaging a career-high 17.8 points, was hurt in the third quarter of a 100-99 loss to Indiana on Saturday and is reportedly out for the three-game Western trip.

Washington matched a season high with 64 points in the opening half against the Pacers but were limited to 35 in the final 24 minutes.

"This was an important one, no question. Now we've got to go out and make it up somewhere," coach Randy Wittman said. "Obviously, (Beal) going out hurt us. That's still not an excuse."

With Beal on the court, the Wizards lost 108-98 to Portland on Jan. 18. C.J. McCollum scored 25 points in the Blazers' third victory in the past four matchups.

They will seek a third consecutive home win in the series while attempting to bolster their three-game lead on a Western Conference playoff spot. The Wizards are in 10th place in the East.

Washington point guard John Wall is averaging 24.5 points on 51.4 percent shooting and 11.5 assists in his last two games in Portland, matching his highest scoring mark in any opposing arena since the beginning of 2013-14.

                          • Preview: Magic (27-35) at Lakers (13-51)
                            Date: March 08, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

D'Angelo Russell still doesn't know how the Los Angeles Lakers blew out the best team in basketball. The same elite team didn't have that comfortable of a time turning it around on the Orlando Magic to establish an NBA-record home winning streak.

It's back to a similar weight class for both Tuesday night in Los Angeles with some added confidence as the Lakers try for a third win in five games.

Sunday's 112-95 home win over Golden State came with Kobe Bryant spending the fourth quarter on the bench nursing an aching right shoulder. The Lakers (13-51) already led by 11 entering the fourth as Russell and Jordan Clarkson outplayed Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Clarkson finished with a game-high 25 points and Russell had 21.

"I really don't know how we came together for yesterday's game," Russell told the team's official website. "But we did it and shocked a lot of people - we shocked ourselves. We knew what we were capable of, but we did it."

Clarkson was 4 of 6 from 3-point range and has averaged 18.6 points while shooting 46.6 percent from deep in his last nine games.

"We got to put another one together tomorrow," Clarkson said. "It doesn't mean anything if we come and get blown out tomorrow. If we get blown out, that's taking steps back for us."

Russell has started the last eight and scored 19.9 points per game while connecting on 49.0 percent from beyond the arc, and in those eight games with the rookie at point guard, Los Angeles has limited itself to 10.9 turnovers per game after being at 14.1 through 56 contests. Russell has a 2.50 assist-to-turnover ratio in that time with 2.00 turnovers per game, while he added four steals as the Warriors turned it over 20 times.

What might have been most impressive was the defensive effort with the Warriors going 4 of 30 from 3-point range, including 1 of 18 from Curry and Thompson. That, however, has hardly been a trend with the Lakers' last 10 opponents shooting 50.5 percent and 41.1 from beyond the arc for 113.2 points per game without going to overtime.

"I was thinking after the game: 'Maybe we have turned that corner and our guys are showing some maturity and some growth,'" said coach Byron Scott, whose team is playing the third of an eight-game homestand. "We'll really see what we have tomorrow."

The Magic have won the last two meetings, including a 101-99 home victory Nov. 11, but the Lakers have won the last two in Los Angeles.

Orlando (27-35) was in it until the end in Monday's 119-113 loss at Golden State despite allowing the Warriors to shoot 50 percent and hit 16 of 35 from 3-point range. The Magic stayed in the game because Golden State turned the ball over 24 times.

Aaron Gordon had 20 points and 16 rebounds as Nikola Vucevic sat out because of a strained groin, and Evan Fournier and Brandon Jennings each scored 20 as well. It was Jennings' top scoring effort in 10 games with his new team.

As for Vucevic, he made it sound like the nagging injury will keep him out longer than a game as Orlando enters the second of a four-game road trip.

"It's just a bad time because we're trying to make the playoffs and this is a really big trip for us," Vucevic told the team's official website. "It felt better during the All-Star break, but after that I just reaggravated it, so it's frustrating now."

                            • Inside the Paint - Tuesday
                              March 8, 2016

The phrase “March Madness” is usually reserved for the college kids but it can be easily be used in the Association over the last two days. Since Sunday, underdogs have gone 8-6 straight up and 11-2-1 against the spread and some of those results were shockers.

The Lakers shocked the Warriors 112-95 on Sunday afternoon as 19/1 underdogs in wire-to-wire fashion. The tickets kept coming later in the days as the Suns (+450) knocked off the Grizzlies 109-100 on the road before the Rockets (+8, +300) rallied past the Raptors for a 113-107 upset in Canada.

On Monday, two of the top three teams in the league in San Antonio and Cleveland both lost outright and Golden State got back-doored at home again as a double-digit favorite to Orlando. The setback for the Spurs at Indiana wasn’t that bad of a loss but the Cavaliers’ 106-103 defeat at home to a short-handed Memphis squad was embarrassing. The Grizzlies were 14/1 underdogs on the money-line and the Cavaliers are now 14-7 SU and 9-12 ATS since head coach Tyronn Lue took over.

Six games on tap for Tuesday and below is my quick handicap.

Brooklyn (18-45 SU, 32-20-1 ATS) at Toronto (41-20 SU, 32-28-1 ATS)

Oddsmakers opened the Raptors as 12-point favorites in this matchup and it would definitely be surprising to see the Nets win this game. For starters, Toronto lost to Houston 113-107 on Sunday as an eight-point home favorite and it hasn’t dropped back-to-back games at home since it suffered three consecutive games at home in early December.

Second, I believe Brooklyn is gassed at this point in the season and the nine-game “Circus Trip” is finally taking a toll on the club. They’ve been respectable so far, going 3-4 SU and 5-2 ATS but a 132-118 loss at Minnesota on Saturday really showed their lack of effort on the defensive end.

The Raptors haven’t been great defensively lately either and I thought this total (207) would be higher based on the form of both clubs, plus Toronto has seen the ‘over’ go 18-12 at home. I expect the Raptors to do their job tonight but I’d be worried about Brooklyn. Toronto is 2-0 both SU and ATS this season against Brooklyn and both wins came by double digits, which includes a 112-100 win on Jan. 18 as an 11-point home favorite.

San Antonio (53-10 SU, 37-25-1 ATS) at Minnesota (20-44 SU, 29-34-1 ATS)

San Antonio opened as an 11-point road favorite and the number has dropped to 10 ½ as of Tuesday morning. The Spurs have always seem to get the better of the Wolves, winning 25 of the last 30 meetings and that includes a recent run of six straight victories. San Antonio has covered five of the last six and playing in “The North Star State” hasn’t been a problem either. The last three wins by the Spurs at this venue came by 25, 15 and 29 points.

Both clubs enter this game off losses and with no rest. San Antonio (12-0 SU, 7-5 ATS) has been perfect on zero days rest this season while Minnesota has been a complete mess, going 2-10 (5-7 ATS). Total bettors should make a note that the Wolves have seen the ‘over’ go 8-2-2 in back-to-back spots with every opponent putting up triple digits.

San Antonio hasn’t dropped back-to-back losses this season but producing a 4-6 ATS mark since the All-Star break could make bettors a tad hesitant to back the club. Minnesota hasn’t been a great investment at home (11-21 SU, 11-20-1 ATS) and that includes a 0-4 record (1-3 ATS) as a double-digit underdog.

Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich missed last night's game due a family medical situation and will miss tonight's game as well.

Atlanta (35-28 SU, 31-30-2 ATS) at Utah (29-33 SU, 29-31-2 ATS)

Utah opened as a short home favorite (-1) over Atlanta and this isn’t an easy game to handicap. These teams met early in the season and the Jazz nipped the Hawks 97-96 as three-point road underdogs. Prior to that win, Atlanta had won eight straight (6-2 ATS) against Utah which included four consecutive victories at Salt Lake City.

After dropping their first three games after the All-Star break both SU and ATS, the Hawks have won four of their next five and the lone loss came at Golden State (w/o Curry). The defense has been better of late and they’ve held all four opponents under 100 in the wins during this span.

The Jazz closed their four-game road trip with a 106-94 win over New Orleans on Saturday, which snapped a five-game losing skid. Utah was catching a lot of public attention just before the All-Star break and it’s burned those bettors with a 3-8 SU and 2-8-1 ATS mark over its last 11 games.

Utah faces a tough scheduling spot here, playing in its first game at home after the road trip plus it travels to Golden State on Wednesday for a back-to-back situation.

New York (26-38 SU, 34-30 ATS) at Denver (25-38 SU, 33-27-3 ATS)

Neither of these teams will be in the playoffs and that usually makes me lean ‘over’ with both clubs rolling the ball out and playing a professional pick-up game. However, the last five in this series have gone ‘under’ which includes their meeting last month at MSG that Denver won 101-96 as a four-point underdog.

No overnight line was posted due to the status of Knicks rookie Kristaps Porzingis (ankle), who remains ‘questionable’ as of Tuesday morning. The Nuggets opened as 3 ½-point home favorites and they've gone 4-5 SU and 3-6 ATS in that this season.

This will be the first of six straight on the road for New York and it does enter this game off a home win on Sunday, beating Detroit 102-89 as a seven-point underdog. The Knicks haven’t won two straight since late January and backing a club with a 10-20 road record isn’t a smart bet.

Denver isn’t great at home (13-19 SU, 14-17-1 ATS) but it has won two of its last three at the Pepsi Center and the offense (117.7 PPG) has put up some monster numbers during this span. The total on this game (205) seems short based on the recent explosion by the Nuggets, plus the 'over' has gone 8-1 at home when they're listed as favorites.

Washington (30-32 SU, 32-30 ATS) at Portland (33-31 SU, 36-28 ATS)

Tough matchup to handicap here as both the Trail Blazers (0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS) and Wizards (0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS) enter this game in poor form. Portland is also returning from a six-game road trip on the East Coast but could have a sense of urgency, knowing that it has a road battle on Friday at Golden State.

Most books have Portland listed as a six-point home favorite and it's done very well in this role lately, going 11-2 SU and 9-4 ATS in the last 13 from the Moda Center.

Washington has eight road games remaining against the Western Conference this season and its gone 3-4 SU and 4-1 ATS in the first seven. After tonight, the Wizards head to Utah on Friday.

Portland has won three of its last four encounters against Washington, two of those wins coming at home. In the first meeting this season, the Blazers earned a 108-98 win on Jan. 18 as four-point road underdogs. The ‘over’ has gone 3-1 during this span.

Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal (pelvis) didn’t make the trip to Portland but could rejoin the club in Utah on Friday.

Orlando (27-35 SU, 34-27-1 ATS) at Los Angeles Lakers (13-51 SU, 30-33-1 ATS)

It’s rare to see the Magic listed as road favorites (-3) but it’s a situation that they’ve done very well in this season. When laying points on the road this season, Orlando has gone 5-0 both SU and ATS, winning by an average margin on 11.4 PPG.

Orlando did earn a backdoor cover (+16) in a 119-113 loss at Golden State last night, which improved their ATS record to 10-2 in road games versus teams from the West. Unfortunately, playing in back-to-back spots hasn’t worked out well for Scott Skiles and company this season. The Magic have gone 4-8 but they have produced a decent ATS mark (7-5) while the ‘over’ has gone 8-4 in these situations.

As mentioned above, the Lakers defeated the Warriors 112-95 on Sunday but they’ve only captured back-to-back victories three times this season. Also, teams beating Golden State this season are 1-4 both SU and ATS in their following games.

The total for this game is sitting at 213 ½ and eight of the last 10 in this series has watched the ‘under’ connect.

                              • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the better minor league prospects for the San Francisco Giants.......

                                1) Christian Arroyo, SS-- 20-year old may not stay at shortstop.

                                2) Tyler Beede, P-- From long line of pro pitchers from Vanderbilt.

                                3) Phil Bickford, P-- Spent one year at Fullerton, one year at Southern Nevada.

                                4) Lucius Fox, SS-- 18-year old played HS ball in Florida; yet to make pro debut.

                                5) Chris Shaw, 1B-- Was HR champ at the Cape Cod summer league in 2014.

                                6) Sam Coonrod, P-- Former Saluki led Sally League in strikeouts LY.

                                **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

                                13) Champ Week is tremendous; these low major and mid-major tournaments are great theater-- so much pressure on the high seeds, who don't go to the NCAAs unless they win this tournament. Of the first seven tournaments that have finished, the #1 seed has won only one of them, that being Chattanooga in the Southern Conference.

                                12) Drexel fired Bruiser Flint, Santa Clara canned Kerry Keating, as coaching carusel begins to spin. Flint gets fired mainly because his best player Damion Lee bolted for Louisville, where he wound up not even playing in the ACC tournament.

Lot of people feeling bad for Louisville's two senior transfers when school wouldn't let the team play in the postseason, but now coach Flint is unemployed because the kid bolted his teammates/coaches for greener pastures.

                                11) Good coaching news: Wisconsin gives the fulltime head coaching job to interim coach Greg Gard, who led the team this year after Bo Ryan retired.

                                10) Illinois gives Lovie Smith six years, $21M to be its football coach; Smith was a pretty good NFL head coach (89-87) but hasn't been involved in college ball since he was DB coach at Ohio State in 1995. Who he puts on his staff will be interesting.

                                9) Gonzaga 88, BYU 84-- Zags beat BYU twice in nine days, are in WCC finals with St Mary's tonight. Gonzaga hasn't missed NCAAs since late 90's; I'm thinking the win last night puts them in, but one never knows about these things. Zags played two subs last night for total of 19:00; fatigue could be an issue tonight.

                                8) NC-Wilmington 80, Hofstra 73 OT-- CAA consistently has a fun tournament; teams are so evenly matched. If I was a bigshot at UNLV, I'd damn sure give UNCW coach Kevin Keatts an interview for the Rebels' open coaching position.

                                7) Chattanooga 73, East Tennessee State 67-- Mocs were up 4 late in game; kid on ETSU got smacked while shooting a 3, but no foul was called, the shooter snapped, got a T, the coach snapped, got a T and school was out. These two teams were athletic as hell, but shot selection and poise weren't at optimum levels.

                                6) Iona 79, Monmouth 76-- Technicals in the SoCon game were justified; this game swung on a horrendous taunting technical called with 4:05 left in a tie game. There was no visible show of anything-- swallow your damn whistle, no one paid to watch you ref, and let the kids decide the game. I didn't care who won this game, was watching it because it as a fun game and the damn ref calls a taunting technical with 4:05 left. Oy.

                                5) Philadelphis Eagles traded three players away for assorted draft picks, as they identify which players Chip Kelly acquired and systemically get rid of them.

                                4) Watched the Milwaukee-San Diego spring training game yesterday; Brewers have a new GM who looks like he is 14 years old, one of these Ivy League geniuses and he is totally rebuilding the ballclub- they could be very, very bad this season, with an eye on developing young talent, the way the Astros did the last few years.

                                3) Redskins released Robert Griffin III; will be very, very interesting to see where he winds up. Can he stay healthy? Will his teammates follow his lead? I'm pretty sure he has the physical tools to succeed. Can't wait to see where he lands.

                                2) Baltimore Orioles signed 1B Pedro Alvarez to a 1-year, $5.75M contract which has a lot of incentives in it- he should enjoy Camden Yards.

                                1) When Maria Sharapova's people announced a 3pm press conference the same day as Peyton Manning's farewell, should've figured it was bad news, a classic news dump. She failed a drug test in January and is facing a lengthy suspension. With all the stuff she does with commercials, this could be a very, very expensive deal-- Nike already is suspending their deal with her. I wasn't aware she is highest paid woman in sports.
