  • Big 12 Tournament 1st Round Betting Preview

For the four teams involved in Wednesday's Big 12 action, the conference tourney is a Hail Mary for a ticket to the "Big Dance".

The Big 12 tournament tips off Wednesday evening with Oklahoma State vs. Kansas State (winner gets #1 Kansas in the second round) and Texas Christian vs. Texas Tech (winner gets West Virginia).

Tournament to be played at Sprint Center, Kansas City, Mo.

Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Kansas State Wildcats (-5, 127)

    * The Cowboys got some much-needed help in their regular-season finale as guards Leyton Hammonds (dislocated finger) and Jeffrey Carroll (illness) returned to action, and Hammonds wound up pacing the team with 20 points and six rebounds off the bench. Hammonds is averaging 10.6 points and a team-most five rebounds per contest while guard Jeff Newberry (11.0 points) stands as Oklahoma State’s leading active scorer with Forte (13.3) and Evans (12.9) out.

    * The Wildcats’ youth has been a bad match with one of the nation’s most demanding schedules as all but two of the team’s 15 losses have come against top-25-ranked teams. Guard Justin Edwards is pacing the squad in scoring (12.2 points per game) and rebounding (5.7) and is joined in double figures by forward Wesley Iwundu (11.9 points), a third-team All-Big 12 selection.

    Betting Stats:

    Oklahoma St. - 12-19 SU, 14-14-1 ATS, 11-18 O/U

    Kansas St. - 16-15 SU, 15-12-1 ATS, 14-14 O/U

    * Under is 5-1 in Wildcats last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.

Texas Christian Horned Frogs vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders (-8.5, 136)

    * Aside from a year ago, the Horned Frogs have finished at the bottom of the Big 12 standings in their other three seasons in the conference. Guards Chauncey Collins (11.8 points) and Malique Trent (11.5) pace the team in scoring while forward Karviar Shepherd is the top rebounder at 5.4 per game.

    * The Red Raiders’ nine Big 12 victories are their most since the 2006-07 season, which also is the last time the program hit 20 or more wins and played in the NCAA Tournament. It’s been a balanced scoring attack with four players – guards Toddrick Gotcher (11.2 points per game) and Devaugntah Williams (10.8) and forwards Aaron Ross (10.5) and Zach Smith (10.0) – averaging double figures but none being named to the All-Big 12 first-through-third teams.

                • Preview: Bears (21-10) at Longhorns (20-11)
                  Date: March 10, 2016 12:30 PM EDT

There's a chance Texas may get back some muscle just in time to face one of college basketball's more imposing frontcourt players.

Cameron Ridley may play for the first time since December for the 23rd-ranked Longhorns as they meet No. 22 Baylor and Rico Gathers in Thursday's Big 12 tournament quarterfinals at Kansas City.

Texas (20-11) was dealt a major blow when the 6-foot-10 Ridley was lost following a 75-73 victory at Stanford on Dec. 19 to a broken foot. Ridley, a four-year starter, posted double-doubles in five of his 11 games this season.

The center has been cleared to return and coach Shaka Smart has indicated that Ridley could see action at some point in this event.

'I don't know definitively when he's going to be able to play,' Smart said, 'but we're extremely hopeful and optimistic he'll be able to play soon. He's been cleared to do quite a few basketball-type activities.'

Ridley's presence would help against Gathers, who was second in the Big 12 with 9.1 rebounds per game for Baylor. The Bears (21-10) ranked second in the regular season in rebound margin at plus-8.2.

There's some history between these rivals after they split their regular-season matchups.

Gathers fouled out with 20 points and eight rebounds in a 67-59 home loss to Texas on Feb. 1, in a contest in which a Buffalo Bills scout was there to watch him play. A chippy second half included an incident in which Gathers fouled Longhorns center Prince Ibeh and then exchanged words with Texas star Isaiah Taylor. Gathers and Taylor received technical fouls.

Baylor gained revenge with a 78-64 road win on Feb. 20, in which Gathers did not start after missing two of three contests with an illness. The Bears outscored the Longhorns 50-32 in the paint, shot 62.7 percent and held a 29-22 rebounding advantage.

Johnathan Motley scored 24 points after he fouled out with five in the first meeting. Motley is a former high school teammate of Longhorns freshman reserve guard Kerwin Roach Jr.

Taylor has been hampered by foul trouble against Baylor, totaling 22 points on 15 shots and finishing with four fouls each time. He averages a team-high 15.0 points.

The Bears are losers of three of four after falling 69-58 to then-No. 10 West Virginia on Saturday. Gathers made his first start since Feb. 13 and fouled out with five points and three boards.

Baylor, on course for a fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in five years, is hoping this event will boost its chances next week.

'Everybody realizes you have a chance to improve your seed with each and every game,' Baylor coach Scott Drew said, 'because every game is a quality-win opportunity.'

The Longhorns have won three of four after Friday's 62-50 victory at Oklahoma State as they enter their first Big 12 tournament under Smart.

'You have in the Big 12 so many teams that have beaten up on each other over the past two-plus months,' Smart said, 'and everyone will come together. You look at the bracket, some of the games that are going to be played early in the tournament are just phenomenal matchups.'

                  • Preview: Cyclones (21-10) at Sooners (24-6)
                    Date: March 10, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Oklahoma may have the Big 12's best player, but no team has been more dominant in the conference tournament of late than the Sooners' first opponent.

As Buddy Hield begins his final chance to add a league title to his growing list of achievements, 21st-ranked Iowa State starts its quest for a third consecutive championship in Thursday's quarterfinal matchup with the No. 6 Sooners.

Though Kansas remains the Big 12's giant in regular-season play, Iowa State (21-10) has reigned as the kings of Kansas City the past two years. After ousting the Jayhawks in the semifinals en route to winning the 2014 event as a No. 4 seed, the Cyclones defended the crown last year as a No. 2 seed by beating ranked Oklahoma and Kansas teams in the final two rounds.

Iowa State faces a potentially tougher road to the championship this time as the sixth seed, with the chance it would need to beat three teams ranked among the Top 10 nationally. No team seeded lower than fourth has won the tournament in its 19-year existence.

"We want to definitely leave our mark," junior point guard Monte Morris said. "If we can do this (again), it'd be special to a lot of people for many different ways."

That also gives the Cyclones something to prove after a so-so regular season in which they lost six of their final 11 games. They struggled to stop the No. 1 Jayhawks in Saturday's 85-78 road loss, allowing 48 second-half points on 58.1 percent shooting.

Iowa State is bidding to join Kansas (1997-99, 2006-08) and Oklahoma (2001-03) as the only schools to win three straight Big 12 tournaments.

The stakes may be even higher for the third-seeded Sooners (24-6), as running the table could land the Sooners a No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament. They've won two straight and four of five following consecutive losses to Kansas and Texas Tech in mid-February.

"Our confidence heading into the postseason is high," Hield told the Sooners' official website. "Each game, we have to be prepared to go out and fight for each other. It's win or go home, so we have to have the mentality of refusing to lose."

Motivation won't be an issue Thursday. Not only did the Cyclones ruin Oklahoma's first game as the nation's No. 1 team in 25 years with an 82-77 win Jan. 18, but they dashed the Sooners' title hopes with a 67-65 victory in last year's semis.

Hield was held to 16 points on 6-of-20 shooting, including 2 of 13 from 3-point range, in that tournament loss.

Such off nights have been few and far between during Hield's magnificent senior campaign. The star guard leads the nation in 3-pointers per game (4.1) and ranks second in scoring (25.1 points per game), claiming Big 12 Player of the Year honors and emerging as the front-runner for the major national awards.

With Hield leading the way, the Sooners entered the conference tournament ranked second nationally in 3-point accuracy (43 percent) and fourth in 3-pointers per game (10.6). They're 14-1 when scoring at least 80 points, while the Cyclones are 0-9 when yielding that many.

Those records include Oklahoma's 87-83 home win over Iowa State on Jan. 2, when Hield had 22 points while teammate Ryan Spangler added 20 with 12 rebounds. Spangler, though, had two points on 1-of-7 shooting in the Jan. 18 rematch as Hield had 27.

Georges Niang, Morris and Abdul Nader all had at least 20 for the Cyclones in that win.

Niang, the 2015 Big Tournament most valuable player, is averaging 20.7 points on 60.8 percent shooting over his last seven.

Morris went 4 of 15 from the field over the last two games and injured his shoulder against Kansas, though he's expected to play.

                      • Vegas ready for March Madness
                        March 9, 2016

Las Vegas sports books get a nice dress rehearsal this week with the college basketball conference tournaments in preparation for next weekends NCAA Tournament, which might be the most stressful four consecutive days the book staff experiences during the entire year.

"It's certainly more challenging than the Super Bowl," said Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook VP Jay Kornegay. "It's the weekend where I tip my hat to all the ticket writers around town who feel the brunt of the pressure right up close, non-stop for 10 or 12 hours a day, four straight days."

Having dozens of games to work with each day through this weekend -- one after another just like next week -- gives the entire staff some practice so the onslaught of bettors next weekend isn't so overwhelming.

The pressure felt to get every wager taken in is felt from the ticket writer to the line supervisor to the bookmaker and then the director. It's a chain reaction and the books that do the best at this process are quite noticeable. The SuperBook is one of those.

"We have a veteran staff -- it's not their first time around, but it's still good to get acclimated a bit for the rush we'll see next week,' said Kornegay.

Communication with the staff and other departments is a big part of his process to be ready for next week.

"I've sent some prep memo's around various departments -- security and food and beverage for the waitresses -- just to get them ready for next week. I sent an internal memo out yesterday to our staff just to remind them about what we're going to see, which is a lot of novice bettors where you have to patient and professional, but also get them through the line as fast as possible.

"One of the other reminders to our staff was in regards to Title 31 and to I.D. anyone that doesn't look 21, and it doesn't matter if they have a bet ticket already or a beer in their hand. It's each writer's responsibility themselves to ensure no one underage is betting."

Another thing Kornagay included in the memo was to make sure everyone on his staff knows about what kind of promotions they're running.

"I want them to know everything about Hoops Central and that we'll have three betting stations open in the showroom. I want them to relay that we have a free "Madness" t-shirt given away for every $25 parlay card wagered. And maybe most of all, I want them to inform everyone to get a phone account. Why wait in line and possibly get shut out? Get a phone app and never be frustrated with long lines again."

The SuperBook opened wagering on their phone app on Jan. 9 and because of their unique numbers in all sports, their handle is rising daily. The person who lives in the Vegas outskirts of Summerlin or Green Valley that scoffed at the idea of driving to Paradise and Sahara to bet the SuperBook's numbers in the past now have it right in their hand.

Even if having the phone app, Kornegay still wants to see everyone at his property having fun next weekend.
"This is our first go-around with the NCAA Tournament in the new SuperBook and we're looking to create the best atmosphere possible for all our guests."

The cost to rebuild the new SuperBook was nearly $12 million. It's still the largest sports book in the city and now its arguably the nicest. In addition to the hundreds that can be seated and standing inside the book, Kornegay's Hoops Central has an additional 1,500 seats inside the Showroom, the same room where Elvis Presley used to sing twice nightly.

                        South Point Madness

The South Point is having a big party throughout their property as well. In addition to parties inside the book and every casino bar, they're also opening up the Ballroom upstairs Thursday through Saturday which accommodates up to 4,000 people. They'll have five betting stations open in the Ballroom as well as their nine sports only windows in the books.

They're running a couple promotions for the week including a contest card for Thursday's games and another for Friday's. The cards cost $5 each and there is no limit. There are 16 games for both days and you simply select the winner -- no points, ties win. Sometimes no points can be more difficult than a point spread because of all the upsets. Whoever has the most winners per day wins a guaranteed $10,000 in addition to any contest entry fees accepted that goes over $10,000.

Another big promotion the South Point is offering begins with Saturday's second round action where they'll be offering -105 reduced juice on straight bets for all NCAA Tournament games. This promotion will run through the Championship Game and is also available on their phone app.

                          • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

NFL has an amazing gift for staying in the headlines 12 months a year........

-- Texans signed QB Osweiler, traded for RB Thomas, redoing their offense.

-- Texans stayed at 35-1 to win the Super Bowl, even after the Osweiler signing; Las Vegas was unimpressed.

-- New Jersey Giants spent $105.5M revamping their defense yesterday. one day after they re-signed Jason Pierre-Paul for $10.5M.

-- Colts gave K Vinatieri $6M for two years; he is 43 years old.

-- ESPN replaced Mike Ditka with Matt Hasselbeck on its Sunday morning show; Ditka is 76, will still be on SportsCenter now and then.

-- Chiefs lose a 3rd round pick next month, a 7th round pick next year because they tampered with free agent WR Jeremy Maclin last off-season.

                            **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

                            13) Pittsburgh 72, Syracuse 71-- Orangemen went 0-3 vs Pitt this year, are off the bubble; expect to hear lot of ESPN people push for them this weekend; over half the ESPN play-by-play guys went to college at Syracuse, but they lost five of their last six games. See ya.

                            12) Duke 92, NC State 89-- Grayson Allen got a flagrant foul for grabbing a player by the shirt from behind; at what point does Coach K sit this brat down? Duke gave up 1.30 ppp in this game and won; that almost never happens. Curious to see what hjappens today when they play a rested Notre Dame team thats beaten them four of their last five meetings.

                            11) Pac-12 tournament isn't on in my house, because the nitwits at the Pac-12 don't have a deal with DirecTV. In fact, while SEC Network and Big 14 Network are on in roughly 70 million homes each, the Pac-12 Network is on in 12 million. No bueno.

                            10) USC 95, UCLA 71-- Bruins finish a hideous 15-17, losing last five games and 10 of last 13, but since Steve Alford's buyout is $10.4M, he'll be back in Westwood next year. Two years from now, the buyout will be half that, but Alford's best player will be gone by then and he doesn't have any more sons to play for him.

                            9) Handicapping is difficult; the dilemma in these conference tournaments is this: which teams are just going to mail it in and not compete, like Stanford/Minnesota did Wednesday? You see Oklahoma State, FIU, Georgia Tech fight back from behind, but these other teams just showed up, but didn't bother to compete. Thats the goal, to try and figure out which teams have had enough and want the season to be over?

                            8) People were skeptical when Buzz Williams bolted from Marquette (a basketball school) to Virginia Tech (a football school) but Williams has Tech on the upswing and they hung 96 points on Florida State last night in an impressive win.

                            7) San Francisco canned coach Rex Walters after he went 127-127 in eight years, with zero NCAA tournaments; Dons were 63-65 in WCC play under Walters.

                            6) Southern Illinois had its best season in years, going 22-10, but they're turning down postseason tournaments-- apparently some of their better players are banged up and their students are on break, so it makes no sense, basketball-wise or financially, to coach Barry Hinson or the school's AD, to go on this season. Too bad.

                            5) NHL has struck gold with these outdoor games; next year, Pittsburgh, St Louis, Toronto and Winnipeg will all host outdoor games.

                            4) Illinois sold 2,000 football season tickets in first 48 hours after they hired former Bears coach Lovie Smith as their new football coach.

                            3) Arizona Diamondbacks will wear eight different uniforms this season. Eight.

                            2) Brad Boxberger saved 45 games for Tampa Bay LY; he made the All-Star team, yet the Rays cut his salary $2,200 this year. Seriously? They don't have $2,200 to kick in so they don't totally insult one of their players? If they don't have that kind of money, they should sell the team to someone who does.

                            1) If you like college basketball, today and tomorrow are two of the best days of the year; ton of games, all important ones. Enjoy!!!
