            • Top 25 Betting Recap
              January 11, 2016

The Week of Jan. 4-10 of the 2015-16 NCAA Basketball betting season is in the books, and today, we're going to be taking a look at each of the Top 25 teams in the rankings and see how they did from an ATS perspective in this go around this past week.

(Results in parentheses represent SU Result/ATS Result)

              1) Kansas (2-0 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Jayhawks outlasted No. 2 Oklahoma in a triple-overtime thriller, 109-106. That's the good news. The bad news is the non-cover snapped a 5-0 ATS run. Kansas faces a road test in West Virginia Tuesday against a Mountaineers club which is unbeaten at home.

              2) Oklahoma (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Sooners were tripped up in Lawrence, but Buddy Hield and company bounced back with a win against K-State. Despite the winning ways of the Sooners lately the Sooners are mired in an 2-5 ATS skid. One certainty about OU is the 'over', which has connected in five straight, and seven of the past eight.

              3) Maryland (2-0 SU/1-0-1 ATS)
The Terrapins have rattled off nine victories in a row, but they're just 2-2-1 ATS over their past five games. The Terps have a road hazard at Michigan Tuesday. Maryland is 2-0-2 ATS in four road outings this season.

              4) Virginia (0-2 SU/0-2 ATS)
The Hoos took it on the chin this week, suffering a pair of road setbacks at Virginia and at Georgia Tech. UVA is just 1-4 ATS over their past five games. On Tuesday, Virginia hosts a red-hot Miami team which is 14-3 ATS in the past 17 overall. The Cavaliers are just 3-7 ATS in their past 10 home games against a team with a winning road record.

              5) Michigan State (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
Sparty bludgeoned Penn State in Happy Valley Saturday, posting their second straight cover after an 0-3 ATS slide. They face Iowa in a revenge game Wednesday. The Hawkeyes dealt the Spartans their only setback to date in an 83-70 win in Iowa City.

              6) North Carolina (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
The Tar Heels have won eight consecutive games, and they covered each of their two games this week. It's their first two-game cover streak since Nov. 13-15 in the first two games of the regular season. The 'over' is 8-0 over the past eight for the Heels.

              7) Arizona (0-2 SU/0-2 ATS)
It was an ugly week for the Wildcats, who received no California love. The Wildcats were dumped at UCLA by three points, and then they lost a heartbreaking 4 OT marathon at USC Saturday night. The 'over' has cashed in five straight, and seven of their past eight. They face a Washington team Thursday which has seen the 'over' hit in seven in a row.

              8) Providence (0-1 SU/0-1 ATS)
The Friars were dumped at home as 10-point favorites against Marquette, laying a rare egg this season. Their 64 points were the lowest total since Nov. 18 when they managed 60 in a win over Illinois. The 'under' vs. Marquette snapped a five-game 'over' run.

              9) Kentucky (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
Kentucky appeared to be untracked with a 4-0 ATS run from Dec. 12-Jan. 2, but then they were trampled by 18 at LSU against freshman phenom Ben Simmons. The 'Cats were able to recover at Alabama for their fifth cover in six tries.

              10) Xavier (1-0 SU/0-1 ATS)
The Musketeers failed to cover in their win at St. John's, and they're now 1-2 ATS over their past three after an 8-0 ATS run from Nov. 26-Dec. 22. They're 2-2 ATS in four road games this season, and they face a tough trip to Marquette next Saturday.

              11) Villanova (2-0 SU/0-1-1 ATS)
'Nova won a difficult conference tilt at Butler, pushing against the number. While they're just a dismal 2-2-1 ATS over the past five, they have won six in a row straight up. A trip to Georgetown looms next Saturday.

              12) Miami-Florida (1-0 SU/1-0 ATS)
There is a hurricane warning up for the entire Atlantic coast, as Miami is showing no signs of letting up. The Canes romped Florida State 72-59, picking up their eight straight win. Miami is 10-3 ATS overall. The 'under' has cashed in three in a row for UM.

              13) Iowa State (1-1 SU/0-2 ATS)
The Cyclones were rolling until the calendar turned to 2016. They're just 1-2 SU/ATS in the new year, suffering a 94-89 loss at home to Baylor as a 7 1/2-point favorite Saturday. The Cyclones have a tough two-game road trip to Texas and K-State this week.

              14) Duke (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
The Blue Devils have opened Atlantic Coast Conference play going 3-0 SU/ATS, and they're on a five-game win streak while going 4-0-1 ATS since a 77-75 setback to Utah back on Dec. 19. Duke heads to Clemson Wednesday before a home date against Notre Dame next weekend.

              15) Southern Methodist (2-0 SU/0-2 ATS)
The Mustangs remained unbeaten with a win over UCF Sunday, but they have have failed to cover in three in a row and four of the past five. They hit the road for two in a row, putting a 4-0 SU/2-2 ATS road mark on the line.

              16) Louisville (1-1 SU/0-2 ATS)
The Cardinals are struggling with their offense lately, falling at Clemson Sunday due to poor shooting. The Cards have failed to cover in five stragiht, and they'll look to snap the skid at home against Pittsburgh Thursday.

              17) West Virginia (2-0 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Mountaineers welcome top-ranked Kansas to town this week. While the Mountaineers are on a seven-game win streak, they're just 2-4 ATS over the past six games, including 1-2 ATS in their past three home games.

              18) Butler (1-1 SU/0-1-1 ATS)
The Bulldogs lost for the third time in four games with a five-point setback to Villanova Sunday. Butler will look to snap out of their funk against lowly St. John's Saturday. The Bulldogs are 0-3-1 ATS in their past four games.

              19) Iowa (1-0 SU/0-1 ATS)
The well-rested Hawkeyes haven't played since Jan. 5, so they'll be coming off nine days of rest and preparation before traveling to East Lansing Thursday. Iowa dealt Michigan State their only setback of the season back on Dec. 29 by an 83-70 score.

              20) Purdue (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Boilers are licking their wounds after getting taken behind the shed at Illinois Sunday. Purdue has lost two of their past three straight-up, and they're 3-3 ATS over the past six outings. Purdue hosts Penn State Wednesday.

              21) Texas A&M (2-0 SU/0-1-1 ATS)
The Aggies are on quite the roll lately, entering the new week on a six-game winning streak. They're an impressive 4-1-1 ATS during the span. On Tuesday, A&M hosts a Florida team which is 3-7 ATS in their past 10 on the road.

              22) South Carolina (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)

The Gamecocks have been a bettors' friend this season. Not only are they one of two unbeatens left, but they're an impressive 10-1-1 ATS in their past 12 games with a spread. The 'under' has hit in five of the past six for the Cocks.

              23) Connecticut (1-1 SU/0-2 ATS)

UConn scratched out an 81-78 win over Memphis to rebound from a loss to Temple earlier in the week. The Huskies are 0-3 ATS over the past three. They now hit the road to battle Tulsa and Houston this week.

              24) Pittsburgh (2-0 SU/1-1 ATS)

The Panthers have won 10 in a row after an impressive 86-82 win at Notre Dame Saturday. Despite their impressive overall record of 14-1 SU the Panthers are just 6-6 ATS. The good news for the Panthers is that they travel to face Louisville, a team on an 0-5 ATS run.

              25) Dayton (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Flyers slipped up at La Salle this past week, and they're now just 2-3 ATS over their past five games. One constant for UD has been the 'under', which is 9-4-1 overall this season. The Flyers have their work cut out this week with visits from Davidson and George Washington.

              • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Seahawks 10, Vikings 9-- Going to be long winter for Minnesota K Walsh.

-- Packers 35, Redskins 18-- Road teams won all four games this weekend.

-- Dolphins hired Adam Gase as their new HC, as they desperately try and prove that Ryan Tannehill can be an effective NFL QB.

-- Eagles are interviewing future Hall of Famer Tom Coughlin for their head coaching job today; does he have to bring a resume?

                -- Next weekend's NFL games: AFC: Chiefs-Patriots, Steelers-Broncos. In the NFC, Packers-Cardinals and Seahawks-Panthers.

-- Over last nine years, in next weekend's round of NFL playoffs, favorites are 14-22 against the spread.

                **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

                13) We start with disappointing but not surprising news: UNLV fired its basketball coach Dave Rice Sunday after the Rebels started 0-3 in conference play. A national search will take place for the next coach. Dave Rice is a good man, a very patient guy who has an autistic child, which requires great patience, but his teams didn't play to their talent level and at the end of the day, it is a performance-based business.

                12) Carnage wasn't limited to the college game; Lionel Hollins was let go by the Nets Sunday, with Brooklyn languishing with a 10-27 record and a big payroll. GM Billy King was also re-assigned; how he ever gets these jobs is beyond me.

                11) Seahawks 10, Vikings 9-- Minnesota missed a 27-yard FG wide left in the last minute on a frigid day in the Twin Cities. Vikings led 9-0 in 4th quarter but failing to score a TD wound up costing them the game. In 260 NFL games this year, Denver is the only team to win a game without scoring an offensive TD-- they did it twice this year, in Weeks 1-5.

                10) Before the game, 88-year old Bud Grant, who led the Vikings to four Super Bowls, came out for the coin toss without a coat on, with the temp at -6. The whole game reminded me of my teenage years, when the LA Rams went to Minnesota three times in playoff games in frigid conditions and came up empty in all three against Grant's Vikings. No bueno. How I hated Metropolitan Stadium; when they knocked it down, they built the **** of America on the same spot. Better use of real estate.

Quick trivia on Grant: He also played for the Minneapolis Lakers and played in the lowest scoring game in NBA history. Interesting guy.

                9) Chuck Knox was the coach of those really good Rams teams in the 70's; he went 186-147-1 in 22 years as a head coach, but was only 7-11 in playoff games, never making the Super Bowl, a little bit like Marvin Lewis, who is 112-94-2 in his regular season tilts, 0-7 in playoff games. Going to be a long winter for Bengal fans.

                8) Not only did Arizona lose two basketball games in LA this weekend, they lost leading scorer Allonzo Trier for 4-6 weeks with a broken hand. These days, very few teams have much depth; injuries like this are tough to overcome.

                7) Wake Forest 77, NC State 74-- Deacons are 8-0 in games decided by six or less points- they're on the right track under 2nd-year coach Danny Manning.

                6) Illinois 84, Purdue 70-- Illini were 10.5-point home underdog. Big win.

                5) Jason Garrett is 17-28 (60.7%) on replay challenges in his career, best of current NFL head coaches. Detroit's Jim Caldwell (16-27, 59.3%) is next best.

                4) Villanova 60, Butler 55-- High-level Big East game; along with Xavier, these are the best teams in the conference this season.

                3) Indiana 85, Ohio State 60-- This game was 48-18 at the half; rough game for the Buckeyes, who are #346 in experience this season. .

                2) When Knile Davis ran the opening kick back for a TD in Houston Saturday, it was the fifth opening kickoff in playoff history run back for a TD.

                1) I think it is important to remember when these coaches get fired that they have families like the rest of us and job changes affect a lot of people. Yes, they make a lot of money but would you want your job history chronicled in the local paper or have nitwits like me writing about you from 2,300 miles away?

                      • Preview: Blue Demons (6-10) at Musketeers (14-1)
                        Date: January 12, 2016 6:30 PM EDT

Even though its starting point guard isn't likely to return, Xavier feels confident it can add to the best start in school history as long as Myles Davis keeps stepping up.

With Edmond Sumner reportedly doubtful, the seventh-ranked Musketeers look to open 9-0 at home for the third straight season and deal DePaul its worst Big East start in five years Tuesday night.

Sumner was coming into his own before going down with a head injury in a scary collision less than three minutes into a 95-64 loss at then-No. 16 Villanova on Dec. 31. The redshirt freshman had reached double-digit points in six of his previous seven games, including 21 against Wake Forest on Dec. 22.

With the playmaker sidelined, Davis has totaled 30 points and nine assists to help Xavier bounce back with an 88-69 home win over then-No. 9 Butler on Jan. 2 and a 74-66 win at St. John's on Wednesday.

He sank all nine of his free throws and scored 16 of his team-high 19 points over the final nine minutes versus the Red Storm. Davis leads the nation with a 95.2 free-throw percentage after making 23 in a row.

Now he'll try to keep holding things down in his new role after coach Chris Mack told reporters Sumner probably won't be ready to return as Xavier (14-1, 2-1) seeks its ninth consecutive win to open the season at the Cintas Center after starting 12-0 there in 2013-14 and 11-0 last season.

"(Davis has) been a point guard over the last couple of games," Mack said. "He's played the 2 primarily all year. He's trying to get players organized in the right spots. He's able to keep a calm and cool head, get to the rim and hit a floater, come up with a loose ball, get fouled and make his free throws."

Davis finished with 25 points while going 8 for 10 from the stripe and added eight rebounds as the Musketeers salvaged a split of last season's series with an 89-76 home win over DePaul on Jan. 24. He also scored 14 while hitting all nine of his foul shots in a 71-68 loss at Allstate Arena earlier that month.

Trevon Bluiett proved a difficult matchup for the Demons, totaling 40 points on 56.0 percent shooting with 16 rebounds in the two meetings. The sophomore guard, who averages a team-high 14.5 points, contributed 18 while sinking 9 of 11 from the free-throw line Wednesday.

DePaul seeks its first Big East victory after losing four in a row and seven of its past eight games. The squad hasn't dropped its first five conference contests since an 0-12 start during the 2010-11 season.

Billy Garrett Jr. had 16 points as the Demons (6-10, 0-4) shot 35.7 percent in Saturday's 74-63 loss at Georgetown. Garrett, who surpassed 1,000 career points, has averaged 17.2 over his last five games.

The junior guard averaged 16.7 points and 6.0 assists in three career games versus Xavier before finishing with six and six while battling foul trouble in the most recent meeting.

The Musketeers rank eighth nationally with a plus-11.2 rebounding margin, though the Demons have done better on the glass in conference games with a plus-5.5 mark compared to Xavier's 4.3.

Xavier has won three of the four matchups since joining the Big East in 2013-14.

                        • Preview: Bulldogs (7-7) at Wildcats (12-3)
                          Date: January 12, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Kentucky is still very much a work in progress. Getting consistently strong efforts from Alex Poythress would certainly help the process along.

The 14th-ranked Wildcats look for a more efficient performance when they try to beat visiting Mississippi State for the ninth straight time Tuesday night.

Poythress bounced back from one of his least-productive games of the season with an offensive outburst, scoring a career-high 25 points in Saturday's 77-61 win at Alabama.

He went 8 of 10 from the field in a much more aggressive effort after attempting three shots and scoring four points in last Tuesday's 85-67 loss at LSU.

'You just have to get that bad taste out of everybody's mouth when you have a difficult game,' Poythress said.

The Wildcats (12-3, 2-1 SEC) led by 16 late in the first half but saw the lead dwindle to four early in the second.

Freshman Jamal Murray's 21 points helped Kentucky hold on.

"When we are all being our best version, we're really good," coach John Calipari said. "When we're not and we have one or two no-shows, anyone in the country can beat us."

Kentucky hasn't had much trouble with the Bulldogs (7-7, 0-2) in recent years, winning the last eight matchups and taking the past four by an average of 20.3 points. Mississippi State's last victory in the series came Feb. 3, 2009 at Rupp Arena.

Pulling another upset of the Wildcats isn't likely if the Bulldogs play like they did in an 82-68 loss at Arkansas on Saturday. Mississippi State shot 37.5 percent from the field for their second-worst mark of the season.

It was a vastly different performance from Wednesday's 61-60 home loss to then-No. 21 Texas A&M, when the Bulldogs led in the final minute.

Mississippi State has lost all three true road games.

"To win on the road, you have to play great defense. You also have to execute offensively," coach Ben Howland said. "There's not a tougher place to play in the country than the University of Kentucky. Their defense creates a lot of offense for them. They do a lot of ball pressure."

Kentucky's biggest task on defense will be to slow Bulldogs forward Gavin Ware, who's averaging 17.2 points. He's scored in double figures in each contest and is shooting an SEC-best 65.3 percent.

"Gavin Ware, of the teams I've seen so far - and I haven't seen everyone - is one of the most improved players in this league," assistant coach John Robic said. "We have to be ready for a hungry team coming in here."

Robic met with the media on the same day reports stated that Calipari is seeking at least $120 million guaranteed to coach in the NBA. Rumors are circulating that Brooklyn could pursue Calipari for its vacancy, but he denied having discussions with any team.

                          • Preview: Gators (10-5) at Aggies (13-2)
                            Date: January 12, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

A prolific offense has keyed Texas A&M's undefeated start in College Station.

Florida doesn't have the offensive firepower to keep up with the Aggies but certainly has a defense capable of slowing them down.

No. 15 Texas A&M looks to win seven straight games for the first time in five years Tuesday night when it hosts the defensive-minded Gators.

Off to their best start in the SEC since joining the conference in 2012-13, the Aggies (13-2, 3-0) took their high-powered offense to Tennessee on Saturday, rallying from 13 points down in the second half for a 92-88 victory.

'I'm proud of our guys," coach Billy Kennedy said. "I feel like we stole a win just by hanging tough and sticking together.'

Jalen Jones had 27 points, one shy of his career high, while fellow senior Danuel House added 23 as Texas A&M recorded its most points in a regulation road game since 2005.

Offensive outbursts like that have been more of the norm at College Station for the Aggies, who haven't won seven in a row since 2010-11 and haven't started 4-0 in conference play since in the Big 12 in 2006-07. They're averaging 86.8 points and shooting 51.4 percent while going 9-0 at home.

The Gators (10-5, 2-1) have only reached 86 points three times and haven't come close to that total in their true road games.

Florida is 1-3 outside Gainesville, averaging 58.8 points - one of the worst road marks by a major-conference team.

What the Gators have going for them, though, is their defense has only allowed an average of 62.0 points on the road. They held then-No. 1 Michigan State to a season-low 36.8 percent shooting in a 58-52 road loss Dec. 12.

Florida is coming off one of its better defensive performances, limiting LSU to 35.7 percent shooting and 3 of 20 from 3-point range in Saturday's 68-62 win. Tigers freshman sensation Ben Simmons did have 28 points and 17 rebounds but also turned it over eight times and fouled out.

'You're only as good as your last one and we're coming off a good one,' first-year coach Mike White said. 'Certainly hope we get that same intensity level (Tuesday) because we need it or we won't have a shot.'

The stout defense Saturday helped offset an offense that shot 38.1 percent and made 3 of 18 from beyond the arc. Florida ranks 336th out of 346 Division I schools in 3-point shooting at 28.3 percent.

'We're asking them to play at such a high level of intensity because we're masking some offensive deficiencies,' White said. 'We can't afford to have a C game defensively and on the glass because we're not good enough offensively right now."

The defense will be tested by a talented and experienced Texas A&M team that starts four seniors alongside 6-foot-10 freshman Tyler Davis.

Jones averages a team-high 16.8 points and has reached 25 three times during the winning streak, but it has been the steady play of the Aggies' backcourt that is carrying the team in SEC play.

Alex Caruso, the NCAA active leader with 235 steals, has totaled 35 points while hitting 8 of 11 3-pointers in the last three games while Anthony Collins, the active leader with 643 assists, has totaled 21 assists to three turnovers.

"We have to be ready for everybody's best shot," Caruso said. "So that means we have to be more consistent and bring our best every day."

The Aggies and Gators split last season's two-game series with each protecting their home court. Florida is 3-1 against Texas A&M in SEC matchups.

                            • Preview: Hurricanes (13-1) at Cavaliers (12-3)
                              Date: January 12, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Coach Tony Bennett wishes he had specific answers for why Virginia wasn't able to come away with better results during back-to-back road losses that have it on the verge of its first three-game skid in nearly five years.

The 13th-ranked Cavaliers know perfectly well something needs to change quickly, though, with one of the country's hottest teams coming to town.

Virginia looks to snap No. 8 Miami's eight-game winning streak and win a 13th straight at home Tuesday night.

The Cavaliers (12-3, 1-2) already have matched their loss total in ACC play from each of the last two seasons after falling 70-68 at Virginia Tech on Jan. 4 and 68-64 at Georgia Tech on Saturday. They didn't exactly play poorly - they shot 49 percent against the Hokies and committed only seven turnovers against the Yellow Jackets - but it wasn't enough to fend off the energized underdogs.

'It's a fine line,' Bennett said. 'Maybe the players will believe me and maybe when I say it, some who don't believe me will, but it is a fine line between successful and being not successful.'

Malcolm Brogdon scored 19 points Saturday and London Perrantes added 13 for Virginia, which hasn't dropped three straight since Feb. 5-16, 2011. Perrantes noted that the Cavaliers have a target on their backs after winning back-to-back ACC regular-season championships and have to come out with the same intensity as their opponents.

Having the home crowd behind them could help. The Cavs have won 33 of their last 34 on their home floor.

"(Miami is a) very good team," Brogdon said. "We've got to bring our 'A' game if we want to have a chance in the game."

The Hurricanes (13-1, 2-0) are on a roll since losing to Northeastern at the buzzer Nov. 27, winning the last seven during this streak by double digits. Sheldon McClellan scored 20 of his 21 points in the second half in Saturday's 72-59 home win over Florida State.

Coach Jim Larranaga was most impressed with Miami's defense, which forced 14 turnovers and held the Seminoles to 35.4 percent from the floor. Opponents have shot 35.5 percent over the last seven, with each under 40.

"I thought (Saturday's game) would be much more high scoring. I told the team that the first team to 80 would win," Larranaga said. "But our individual and team defense was very efficient in both halves."

Miami and Virginia both are shooting 49.7 percent on the season to rank among the nation's leaders, and Larranaga knows it's only a matter of time before the Cavaliers get hot again.

The series has been close in recent years, with these teams splitting the last six meetings. Three were decided in overtime, and two others by fewer than five points.

Perrantes scored a career-high 26 points in Virginia's 89-80 double-overtime victory in last season's only meeting. Angel Rodriguez, who is just 3 for 17 from the floor with nine points over his previous two combined, finished with 25 in that contest for the Hurricanes, while McClellan added 16.

Larranaga expects another tight game despite the Cavs' recent struggles. Miami has lost its last three trips to Virginia.

"It's just one game," Larranaga said after his team's latest solid effort. "We have a very tough opponent on their home court. Virginia has been very hard to beat in Charlottesville, so we've got to go there and play a great game."

                              • Preview: Friars (14-2) at Bluejays (12-5)
                                Date: January 12, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

Providence's worst offensive game of the season narrowly ended an eight-game winning streak and cost it a spot in the top 10, but its coach isn't stressing and his team hasn't had much of a problem with its next opponent.

The 12th-ranked Friars shift their attention to Tuesday night's visit to Creighton, which is already in position to match its Big East win total from a season ago.

Providence (14-2, 2-1) fell 65-64 at home to Marquette last Tuesday with standout guard Kris Dunn unable to get a shot off at the buzzer. Coach Ed Cooley classified it as one might expect of an early-January letdown.

"It's not the end of the world," Cooley said. "It's a game. It's our 16th game. I'm not going to be down. I'm going to continue to motivate this group to be the best that we can absolutely be."

Dunn continued to perform with a third straight game of at least 20 points, shooting 51.2 percent while hitting 9 of 15 from 3-point range in that span.

Those numbers, however, have been secondary lately. Ben Bentil scored 28 on 9-of-17 shooting and is averaging 24.8 on 56.9 percent in his last four after entering that span with 17.7 and 46.1 marks. The sophomore's 19.4 scoring average is up from 6.4 during a freshman season in which he started 23 of 34 games.

It was a fitting end to a game in which the Friars were limited to a season-low 37.7 percent and 22.2 from 3-point range.

"We started the game bad and ended the game bad," said Cooley, whose team allowed its highest field-goal percentage of the season (51.2). "This one's definitely on me. I've got to do a better job of getting my guys prepared."

Even so, its perimeter defense was again stellar. The Friars have limited their three conference foes to 17.1 percent, but that'll be tough to keep up versus Creighton. The Bluejays (12-5, 3-1) have shot 40.0 percent from long range over their last eight and went 8 of 19 for a second straight game in Saturday's 82-67 win at Seton Hall.

Maurice Watson Jr. had 13 points and a season-high 14 assists on his way to being named Big East Player of the Week. The 5-foot-10 guard preceded it with a career-high 27 points in last Tuesday's 79-66 home win over Georgetown. In four conference games, Watson has averaged 18.0 points on 57.4 percent shooting with 7.5 assists.

"He can score the basketball at the rim," coach Greg McDermott said of the Boston transfer. "He's learned to become a good leader on the defensive end of the floor, and I think is finally understanding the impact he can have on that end of the floor.

"But his vision and ability to make plays for his teammates is as good as anybody I've ever coached."

Center Geoffrey Groselle benefited most against Seton Hall with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting, and the center has averaged 16.3 points on 85.7 percent in the last six games.

The result is a team on the verge of a fourth conference win after going 4-14 in regular-season Big East games a season ago. Over a 5-1 span, Creighton has averaged 86.5 points and shot 50.7 percent.

"Our guys pick their spots," McDermott said. "We've got an unselfish group and when we move the basketball, we're a pretty efficient offensive team."

It now just needs to happen against strong competition. Three of Creighton's five losses have come against the Top 25 to extend its skid against ranked foes to 10.

Providence has won four of five meetings since Creighton entered the Big East, including a 74-65 win in Lincoln on Jan. 17 behind Dunn's 21 points.
