  • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Top six outfielders in OPS last season.......

    6) Andrew McCutchen, Pitt-- .889

    5) David Peralta, Ariz-- .893

    4) Jose Bautista, Tor-- .913

    3) Nelson Cruz, Sea-- .936

    2) Mike Trout, LAA-- .991

    1) Bryce Harper, Wsh-- 1.109

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

    13) Nevada 65, UNLV 63-- Former NBA coach Eric Musselman is the new coach at Nevada; this was his first game against rival UNLV. Musselman went to college at the U of San Diego, where his roommate was George Tarkanian (yes, his son).

    12) ESPN struck gold with former Stanford/Cal/Warrior coach Mike Montgomery as analyst of the UNLV-Nevada game. He is smart, relaxed behind the mike-- you learn stuff listening to him.

    11) Ball State, Iowa State were only teams that played yesterday that turned the ball over more than 20 times; odd thing is, they both won and on the road at that.

    10) Ball State 88, Eastern Michigan 87 2OT-- Speaking of which, maybe the worst 0:15 of officiating we'll see all season at the end of the second OT. Seriously.

EMU led 87-85 with 0:18 left, Ball State misses a 3 from the left wing. Rebound goes into the right corner, where an EMU player grabs it, is trapped by three guys on Ball State, at least two of whom seem to foul him, or in worst case, cause a tied ball.

But the officials swallow their whistles, a Ball State player emerges from the scrum by taking at least four steps with the ball- he passes to a teammate, who hits a 3-ball to win game with 0:00.7 left. This game was in Ypsilanti; home fans weren't happy.

All three of these refs should be suspended for blatantly failing to do their job.

    9) Ark-Little Rock 68, Tex-Arlington 62-- Game between Sun Belt titans was 42-14 at the half, Little Rock.hung on in second half; Arlington got within four in last 1:00.

    8) Pepperdine 71, BYU 65-- Cougars came back from 10 down at half to win at LMU Thursday, but Waves got best of them here. BYU was just 6-22 on the arc.

    7) Bulls 96, Cavaliers 83-- Tyronn Lue's first game as head coach in Cleveland did not go well. Lue says the Cavaliers aren't in good enough shape. To be continued....

    6) California 74, Arizona 73-- During this game, Bill Walton talked about: volcanoes, Lou Brock, alignment of the planets, Bugs Bunny, San Quentin, Apple computers, as well as his grandson. He also fit in commentary on Cal's dramatic win- they went 2-0 at home this week, even without injured point guard Tyrone Wallace. Big week.

    5) Louisville 75, Georgia Tech 71-- Tech led by 7 at half, Cardinals rallied for third win in a row. Coach K's son-in-law was analyst for this game; he was shilling for the ACC as strongest league in the country. Apparently, he hasn't seen any Big X games.

    4) Cal-Riverside 74, Long Beach State 72-- Riverside coach Dennis Cutts is a fellow Albany alum and a good coach; big win for him here. Long Beach made 13-24 from the arc and still lost- that doesn't happen very much.

    3) Indiana 89, Northwestern 57-- Impressed with how much better Hoosiers are now than they were in November, when they lost to Wake Forest, UNLV. They're 7-0 in a Big 14 that isn't nearly as good as everyone thinks it is, but they are 7-0.

    2) Biggest upset of the day: South Florida (+16.5) 71, Houston 62.

    1) Duke and Michigan State ended their three-game skids. Spartans were especially emotional after beating Maryland at home-- was fun to see kids show genuine joy at winning one regular season game. Maybe it was more relief than joy, but still.......

      • Books expecting Finals rematch
        January 24, 2016

The first half of the NBA regular season is behind us and according to the oddsmakers at Sportsbook.ag, it appears that the final three quarters could just be a formality.

In their latest NBA Finlas Possible Matchup Odds, they have a rematch between Golden State and Cleveland listed at 6/5 (Bet $100 to win $120) odds.

It’s hard to argue against the odds considering the Warriors have been nearly unbeatable thus far but they're losing ground to another club in the Western Conference, San Antonio.

The Spurs are right on their tails and the odds on them meeting Cleveland in this year's finals is listed at 9/5 (Bet $100 to win $180).

Cleveland hasn’t shined as bright as Golden State or San Antonio, the Eastern Conference is much weaker than the West and we haven’t seen any other formidable opponents develop just yet.

Cleveland just fired head coach David Blatt on Friday and promoted Tyronn Lue to the top spot. The Cavaliers are 0-3 versus the Spurs (0-1) and Warriors (0-2) this season.

Even though the NBA Finals did have a rematch in the 2013 and 2014 seasons with the Heat and Spurs meeting in back-to-back years, it’s still very rare.

Including the Miami-San Antonio encounter, there have only been 12 NBA Finals matchups in which the same teams have played in consecutive seasons.

Listed below are the odds for Golden State to make this year’s finals and who their potential opponent from the Eastern Conference.

        Cavaliers vs.Warriors 6/5
        Raptors vs.Warriors 24/1
        Bulls vs.Warriors 28/1
        Heat vs.Warriors 28/1
        Hawks vs.Warriors 28/1
        Pacers vs.Warriors 28/1
        Celtics vs.Warriors 37/1
        Wizards vs.Warriors 90/1

Based on the above numbers, Toronto or Chicago have the best odds after Cleveland to win the East and face Golden State.

After Golden State, the oddsmakers at Sportsbook.ag believe San Antonio could represent the West and meet Cleveland in the finals.

        Cavaliers vs.Warriors 6/5
        Cavaliers vs.Spurs 9/5
        Cavaliers vs.Thunder 12/1
        Cavaliers vs.Clippers 15/1
        Cavaliers vs.Rockets 60/1
        Cavaliers vs.Grizzlies 580/1

After the Spurs, the odds point to Oklahoma City and the L.A. Clippers to meet the Cavaliers in the finals.

Listed below are all of the odds for other eligible teams per Sportsbook.ag.

        Bulls vs.Clippers 200/1
        Bulls vs.Grizzlies 1000/1
        Bulls vs.Rockets 800/1
        Bulls vs.Spurs 35/1

        • SBPI Ratings (1/22/16)
          January 22, 2016

Here is our second installment of the NBA SportsBoss Power Index (SBPI) for the 2015-2016 season.

As a reminder this model first uses the Four Factors analysis as a basis to measure team effectiveness & efficiency in key statistical areas followed by filtering that data into a regression formula that properly weights the impact of each statistic before being finalized by an SOS adjustment.

Here is where each team stands through Thursday, January 21st:

          2015-16 NBA RATINGS & PROJECTIONS

          - Power Ratings Projected Record Conference Seeds

Team Home Road Wins Losses West East
          San Antonio 107.6 103.1 73 9 1 -
          Golden State 105.2 100.7 72 10 2 -
          Oklahoma City 100.5 96.5 59 23 3 -

          Miami 93.2 90.2 43 39 - 7
          Dallas 93.0 90.0 44 38 - -
          Utah 92.1 89.6 37 45 7 -
          Sacramento 90.2 88.2 36 46 8 -
          Houston 90.5 88.0 38 44 6 -
          Portland 90.4 87.9 35 47 - -
          Chicago 90.5 87.5 41 41 - -
          Milwaukee 90.1 87.1 34 48 - -
          New York 90.0 87.0 37 45 - -
          New Orleans 88.7 86.2 29 53 - -
          Denver 88.0 86.0 31 51 - -
          Minnesota 87.6 85.6 26 56 - -
          Phoenix 87.1 85.1 26 56 - -
          Brooklyn 85.6 83.6 22 60 - -
          Philadelphia 82.6 80.6 13 69 - -
          L.A. Lakers 82.0 80.0 15 67 - -

These are the actual power ratings I would use when setting lines on a daily basis.

The San Antonio Spurs maintain the top spot in the ratings but the East continues to strengthen it’s depth as seen by the playoff seedings & each team’s corresponding rating.

The “Projected Record” column is calculated by:

          1) Taking a teams current record
          2) Adding wins over remainder of the season based on their regression analysis of strength

For example, walking through the San Antonio Spurs calculation:

As of Jan. 22, 2016, they are currently 37-6 & are projected to play .934 ball for the remainder of the season. Taking that .934 times their 40 remaining games yields 37.4 more wins; add the 36 & 37.4 and you get 73.4 wins, which is shown in the projected wins column.

Now remember there are obviously additional variables that could be in play when projecting a team’s final record such as sitting players, home/road splits – but this formula is at worst a good proxy for projecting playoff seeds.

              • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Top six relief pitchers in saves LY.......

                5) Huston Street, LAA-- 40

                4) Brad Boxberger, TB-- 41

                2) Trevor Rosenthal, StL-- 48

                1) Mark Melancon, Pitt-- 51

                **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

                13) Broncos 20, Patriots 18-- Peyton Manning is 6-9 in his first playoff game of the year, 5-1 in his second one. His commercials will be all over TV long after we are dead and buried. Would be interesting to see his tax returns.

This will be Denver's 8th Super Bowl, under five different head coaches.

                12) Panthers 49, Cardinals 15-- Carolina gets to its second Super Bowl; its coach the last time was John Fox, who was Denver's head coach until he was replaced by Gary Kubiak two years ago. Panthers are listed as a 4-point favorite.

To nitwit owners who fire coaches every two years: Ron Rivera was 13-19 in his first two years with the Panthers. Some teams would've fired him then.

                11) Sunday's highlight for me was having dinner at a bar, watching the Carolina game and listening to three women to my right talking about how one of their friends married a guy, while he was still in jail. None of my business, but it begs the question......

What do you get the happy couple as a wedding present?

                10) Temple 89, SMU 80-- Last unbeaten goes down. Owls made a season-high 14 3's in a game pushed back a day by snow. Question for Mustangs now is their motivation for the rest of the regular season, since there is no postseason for them.

                9) Providence 82, Villanova 76 OT-- Rough day to be favored in Philly, as Wildcats got beat by Friars in the best game of the day. Having been in Philly a few times, I have no idea where they put 22 inches of snow, which they had this weekend.

                8) Carolina Panthers' owner Jerry Richardson is first owner since George Halas who also played in the NFL; he has been the recipient of a heart transplant, too.

                7) San Diego State Aztecs' hoop team is 19-2 in its last 21 overtime games.

                6) Bad Beat of Weekend, Month, Year???-- Northern Kentucky 82, Ill-Chicago 69, in overtime. UIC was a 12.5-point underdog; you get 12.5 points and game goes to OT, you're not happy but you figure you still will win- not so fast. Flames are still winless against D-I teams this season.

                5) I swear I heard this right on Golf Channel last night: Jordan Spieth gets $1.3M just for showing up and playing at the Malaysian Open this coming week. Not $1.3M if he wins, $1.3M just for showing up. Oy.

                4) Since 2000, Utah State's basketball team has the 6th-best winning %age in the whole country-- never would've guessed that.

                3) If you care about such things, in the United Arab Emirates, the weekend is Friday, Saturday, not Saturday./Sunday. Go figure.

                2) Cleveland Cavaliers were 97-215 in four years that Lebron James was in Miami; they're 83-41 since he came back.

                1) Was glad that ESPN showed Stephen Curry 90 minutes before his game Friday night, doing ballhandling drills and practicing his craft. Thats why he is so good, he works his ass off at it. Kids need to realize that practicing skills improves your game more than playing in actual games does.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Spurs at Warriors
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the most anticipated matchups of the NBA season lost some luster, with Tim Duncan not playing.

San Antonio Spurs at Golden State Warriors (-4.5, 209)

The Golden State Warriors are undefeated at home and are on pace to set the record for most wins in an NBA regular season, yet they’re only two games clear of the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference standings. The Warriors will put that undefeated home mark on the line when they host the Spurs on Monday in the first meeting of the season between the West heavyweights.

San Antonio rolls into Golden State on a 13-game winning streak and owns a better point differential (plus-14.5) than the Warriors (plus-12.1) thanks to a scoring defense that is far and away the best in the league at an average of 89.8 points allowed, but will be without star power forward Tim Duncan, who will be resting a sore knee. That defense will be going up against a Golden State offense that leads the NBA in scoring (114.7) and has put up 126.3 points while rolling past the Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers in the last three games. “It’s great for the NBA and great for us,” Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson told reporters. “It’s going to be a good test for us. It’s such a close race for that No. 1 spot, and San Antonio is playing beautiful ball. It’s going to be fun.” It has been nearly a year since the last time Golden State lost a home game, and Friday’s 122-110 win over Indiana marked their 38th straight home victory spanning two seasons.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, FSN Southwest (San Antonio), CSN Bay Area (Golden State)

LINE HISTORY: The Warriors opened as 3-point home favorites, but after the news came out that Duncan would miss the game, the Warriors were moved a point-and-a-half to -4.5. The total opened at 209.

                      INJURY REPORT:

Spurs - PF L. Aldridge (probable Monday, back), PF T. Duncan (out Monday, knee).

Warriors - SF J. McAdoo (out Monday, toe).

                      POWER RANKINGS: Spurs (-18) - Warriors (17.3) + home court (-3) = Warriors -2.7

ABOUT THE SPURS (38-6, 30-14 ATS, 20-23-1 O/U): San Antonio has not been challenged much of late, with only three of its last 13 wins coming by single digits. The Spurs warmed up for the showdown by winning the first two games of the road trip at Phoenix and the Los Angeles Lakers by a total of 41 points and are looking forward to the test on Monday. “There’s no doubt that players will look at it like more than (just another game),” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich told reporters. “They can’t help it. They’re playing the best team in the league and they’ll be fired up about that.”

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (40-4, 26-17-1 ATS, 27-17 O/U): There is plenty of mutual respect going back and forth between San Antonio and Golden State, and current Warriors coach and former Spurs player Steve Kerr continues to be amazed by his former team. “I know them pretty well,” Kerr told reporters. “It’s remarkable to me that I’m 50 years old and have been retired for 13 years, and they have three guys (Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker) and a coach who are still on that team. It makes no sense. The continuity and the program they’ve built is amazing.” Kerr (complications from back surgery) returned to the bench on Friday after missing the first 43 games and watched star Stephen Curry put up a triple-double in the easy win.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Spurs are 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings.
                      * Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

                      * Under is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings in Golden State.

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES (14-31) at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (30-12)
                            Tip-off: Monday, 7:00 p.m. ET
                            Sportsbook.ag Line: Cleveland -13.5, Total 203

Tyronn Lue will be looking to earn his first victory as Cleveland’s head coach when the Cavaliers host the Timberwolves on Monday.

The Timberwolves hosted the Grizzlies as 3.5-point home underdogs on Saturday and ended up winning the game 106-101. Minnesota had lost its two previous games both SU and ATS, and the team had lost nine of its 10 games before that two-game losing skid.

The Bulls, meanwhile, embarrassed the Cavaliers, on Saturday, winning 96-83 as 10.5-point road underdogs. Cleveland will now be looking to win against a very beatable Minnesota team before facing an even worse Phoenix group on Wednesday.

These teams met once already this season and the Cavaliers won that game 125-99 as 10-point favorites in Minnesota.

Over the past three seasons, Cleveland is 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS in this head-to-head series. One thing that does favor the Timberwolves in this game is the fact that the team is 7-0 ATS in road games after playing a game as a home underdog this season.

As for injuries, PF Kevin Garnett (Knee) is questionable for Minnesota in this one and Cleveland is currently at full strength.

The Timberwolves are coming off of a win over the Grizzlies and SF Andrew Wiggins (20.8 PPG) played a very good game for Minnesota. Wiggins finished that one 7-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. He had 19 points and five boards and is now shooting 51.9% from the field over the past five games. If he can continue to take good shots then he will become a much better player in the second half of the season.

C Karl-Anthony Towns (15.8 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 1.8 BPG) is also playing extremely well for the Timberwolves recently. Over the past five games, Towns is averaging 16.8 PPG, 11.8 RPG and 2.2 BPG in 31.2 MPG. Towns will need to be on his game in this one and it’s likely that he will be, as he had 22 points the last time he faced this Cavaliers team.

Another guy that will need to play well for Minnesota is PG Ricky Rubio (9.7 PPG, 8.6 APG, 4.4 RPG, 2.2 SPG). Rubio is averaging 11.5 APG over the past two contests and is really seeing the floor well for the Timberwolves. If he can continue to find his teammates in the right spots then this team should stay competitive, especially against a struggling Cleveland bunch.

The Cavaliers did not look good against the Bulls on Saturday and will now be extra hungry for a win over the Timberwolves on Monday.

If Cleveland is going to win this game then SF LeBron James (25.0 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 6.2 APG, 1.4 SPG) will need to play a good game. James finished with 26 points, 13 boards, nine assists and two steals against Chicago, but the superstar was a lousy 11-for-27 from the field and 0-for-5 from three in that one. The Cavaliers need James to play a lot better on Monday and he needs to take better shots in order to do so.

Another guy that will need to be on his game on Monday is PF Kevin Love (15.6 PPG, 10.9 RPG). Love should be amped up to play against his former team and he did have 20 points and nine boards the last time he faced the Timberwolves.

Tyronn Lue has promised to make Love more of a focal point in this offense moving forward, so it’ll be interesting to see the looks he gets in this one.

SAN ANTONIO SPURS (38-6) at GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS (40-4)
                            Tip-off: Monday, 10:30 p.m. ET
                            Sportsbook.ag Line:Golden State -5.5, Total 212

The Spurs will be going for their 14th straight victory when they face the Warriors in Golden State on Monday.

San Antonio is scorching hot at the moment, winning each of its past 13 games and covering in nine of those contests as well. The Spurs most recently faced the Lakers as 16.5-point favorites in Los Angeles and came away with a 108-95 victory. Ten of their past 13 victories have been by 10 or more points and the team will be looking to make a statement at Oracle Arena on Monday.

The Warriors, meanwhile, defeated the Pacers 122-110 as 12.5-point home favorites on Friday. Golden State has now won three straight games and 11 of its past 13 as well. This team has been the class of the NBA all season long, but it now faces a Spurs team that has been equally as impressive.

Over the past three seasons, San Antonio is 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS when facing Golden State and that includes a 3-1 record both SU and ATS at Oracle Arena.

Considering the way these teams have played on the season, both have some favorable trends pointing in their direction. For San Antonio, the team is an impressive 12-1 ATS after a game where it failed to cover this season.

Golden State, however, is 20-7 ATS when playing with two days rest over the past three seasons.

PF LaMarcus Aldridge (Back) is probable for the Spurs, who are going to be without PF Tim Duncan (Knee) in this one. The Warriors, meanwhile, will be without PF James Michael McAdoo (Toe) for this game.

If it weren’t for the Warriors’ play this season then everybody would be talking about the Spurs. Now San Antonio has a chance to show everybody that it is the best team in the NBA.

SF Kawhi Leonard (20.0 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 1.9 SPG) is going to have to play an incredible game for San Antonio in this one. Leonard is one of the best defensive players in basketball, but he is also an offensive force this season. Leonard is shooting 50.2% from the field and 47.8% from the outside on the year and the Spurs need him to catch fire in this game.

PF LaMarcus Aldridge (15.9 PPG, 8.9 RPG) missed the game against the Lakers on Friday, but he will be counted on to produce against Golden State on Monday. The Spurs brought Aldrige in to be their top offensive option and he’ll see some extended minutes with Duncan out. If he can get it going then it would really take some pressure off of Leonard in this one.

PG Tony Parker (12.7 PPG, 5.1 APG) will also be extremely important in this one for the Spurs. Parker must hold his own against Steph Curry or San Antonio could get blown out in this game.

The Warriors have been the talk of the NBA season, but they must now defeat a team that has been keeping pace with them all year. If Golden State is going to win this one then PG Stephen Curry (30.1 PPG, 6.6 APG, 5.4 RPG, 2.1 SPG) is going to need to go off for his team. Curry has been on fire over the past five games, averaging 32.6 PPG, 7.0 APG and 7.0 RPG on 53.5% shooting from the floor and 49.3% shooting from the outside. He was dominant in a win over the Pacers on Friday, finishing with 39 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds in 37 minutes. He will look to be aggressive as a scorer with the slower Tony Parker on him on Monday.

SG Klay Thompson (20.5 PPG) will also need to play a very good game for his team, as he could be the guy matched up with Kawhi Leonard on Monday. If that’s the case, Thompson will need to be locked in defensively and he’ll also need to find a way to get some solid shots off. If he is not hitting from the outside then it’ll be tough for Golden State to win this game.

PF Draymond Green (14.7 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 7.3 APG, 1.4 SPG, 1.3 BPG) will also need to be ready to play well on both ends of the floor. He could be guarding LaMarcus Aldridge in this game and will need to stay out of foul trouble and also contribute in all of the areas he usually does on offense.
