    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)
Most popular picks in Week 16 season record: 50-46-2

Redskins (+3) were 4th most popular pick; they played Saturday night- W.

    7) Browns +12 (335)-- People showing faith in big underdogs this week- W.

    6) Rams +13.5 (353)-- St Louis lost its last ten visits to King County- W.

    5) Patriots -3 (411)-- Don't get many chances at New England -3- L.

    3) Vikings -4.5 (431)-- Going to be a frigid night in the Twin Cities.- W.

    2) Steelers -10 (437)-- Jimmy Clausen is 0-3 against spread this year- L.

    1) Broncos -3.5 (446)-- Denver could actually still miss the playoffs.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

    13) Rams 23, Seahawks 17-- St Louis sweeps Seahawks for first time in 11 years; at 7-8, Rams are finishing strong, but when they go 3-1 vs Arizona/Seattle and miss the playoffs, its an empty feeling. St Louis was +3 in turnovers; last two weeks, teams with +2 or better turnover ratio are 14-0 SU.

    12) Bears 26, Buccaneers 21-- Tampa Bay faded down stretch, losing four of last five games; in those five games, Bucs started 37 drives 80+ yards from goal line, their opponents only 20. Bad special teams, lousy on 3rd down (9 of last 29). Up 14-13 in third quarter with ball in red zone, Winston threw an awful INT, giving up an easy FG. Chicago dominated game from that point on.

    11) Falcons 20, Panthers 13-- First loss of season for Carolina; not sure it is worst thing, takes some pressure off- they can rest banged-up guys next week. Atlanta was eliminated when the Giants got beat in Minnesota last night- they started season 5-0, so missing the playoffs.makes this season a crummy one.

    10) Bills 16, Cowboys 6-- Buffalo hosts the Jets next week, with chance to knock Rex Ryan's old team out of playoffs. Dallas is 1-10 with backup QB starting this year, and they used three of them. Broncos (Week 5) are only team this year to win a game they didn't score an offensive TD in, when other team did- Broncos also won a game in Week 1 when neither team scored an offensive TD.

    9) Saints 38, Jaguars 27-- New Orleans had 10 drives; five TDs, three FGs, not good day for Jaguars, who have now lost four of last five games. If you're the Saints, would you trade your coach for a draft pick and if so, how high a pick would you want? Lot of rumors out there that the Dolphins/Colts are interested in Sean Payton.

    8) Lions 32, 49ers 17-- Detroit won five of last seven games; if they're smart, they get rid of Jim Caldwell anyway, hire a defensive-minded coach who will keep OC Cooter on his staff. 49ers are 2-9 vs spread in its 11 losses, 4-8 vs the spread as an underdog of 6+ points. They must've really not liked Jim Harbaugh to fire him.

    7) Chiefs 17, Browns 13-- Chiefs won last nine games (7-2 against spread) have made playoffs despite starting season 1-5. Cleveland lost nine of last ten games (2-8 against spread) as another dismal season comes to an end. This is good time to point out that all 16 games next weekend will be divisional rivalry games.

    6) Colts 18, Dolphins 12-- Miami lost seven of last nine games (1-8 vs spread); their next coach will be a big name- they had ball in red zone five times in this game, scored only 12 points. Indy is still alive for playoff spot; they host hapless Titans, Houston plays Jacksonville. Still baffled how Ryan Tannehill never gets benched.

    5) Jets 26, Patriots 20 OT-- I'm pretty sure last NFL coach who chose to kick off to start OT was Marty Mornhinweg, who got fired shortly thereafter; if defense keeps Jets out of EZ on first drive, no one says a word. They didn't.

Tom Brady used to date actress Bridget Moynihan- they had a kid together- the young man's name is John Edward Thomas, as in J-E-T. Not a coincidence. Apparently Ms Moynihan holds a grudge-- hope she bet the Jets in this game.

    4) Texans 34, Titans 6-- Houston won six of its last eight games, despite using five QBs this season- they could be tough out in AFC playoffs. Tennessee lost six of its last seven games (0-6-1 vs spread); they're 1-10 vs spread when scoring less than 33 points. How happy will Jerry Jones be when Brandon Weeden starts a playoff game?

    3) Cardinals 38, Packers 8-- Next week's Sunday night game: Vikings-Packers, so for second week in row, a game in frigid conditions gets moved from noon to 7:30pm local time kickoff. Does no one care about fans who buy tickets? Packers' OL was useless in this game. Arizona won last nine games; they were -3 in turnovers in both their losses- they're the best team in the NFL right now.

    2) Ravens 20, Steelers 17-- Steelers now need to win in Cleveland and get help from Buffalo next week to make playoffs. Ravens found a competent backup QB in Mallett, who was cut by Houston when he missed plane to Miami game, after he took a day off when Hoyer was named starter this summer.

    1) Vikings 49, Giants 17-- Tank job by Giants, who were eliminated when Redskins won Saturday night. If you owned the Giants and it was your money being spent, do you bring Tom Coughlin back as coach? It was pretty much assumed in the media last summer that if he missed the playoffs this year it was sayonara.

And if you do fire a coach who won two Super Bowls, who do you bring in who will be better? Do you fire the GM, who hasn't drafted well? Interesting questions.

NBA roundup: Surging Celtics win fourth straight

BOSTON -- Forward Jae Crowder, doing it both ends of the floor, scored 13 of his 18 points in the third quarter, and the Boston Celtics won their season-high fourth straight game and handed the New York Knicks a fourth straight loss with a 100-91 decision Sunday night.

Crowder, given the task of guarding Carmelo Anthony for most of the night, hounded the Knicks' star forward into a bad shooting night. Crowder also grabbed six rebounds.

Anthony scored a game-high 29 points and had 10 rebounds, but he shot 11-for-26 from the floor.

The Celtics (18-13) completed a weekend sweep, as they won Saturday night in Detroit. They moved within a game of the idle Toronto Raptors in the Atlantic Division. Boston's next three games are at home against the Los Angeles Lakers (Kobe Bryant's last visit) and a home-and-home with the Brooklyn Nets -- two teams with a total of 13 wins between them.

              Thunder 122, Nuggets 112

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Russell Westbrook scored 30 points to lead Oklahoma City to a victory over Denver at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Westbrook collected 12 assists and nine rebounds to go along with his 11 of 17 shooting. Kevin Durant added 26 points and 10 assists. Serge Ibaka scored 19 points while Enes Kanter came off the bench to post 21 points as the Thunder improved to 21-10.

Kenneth Faried led the Nuggets with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Will Barton came off the bench to score 19 points while Joffrey Lauvergne collected 18 points as Denver dropped to 12-19.

              Grizzlies 112, Lakers 96

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Mike Conley scored 19 points with five assists as Memphis breezed past Los Angeles at FedExForum.

The Grizzlies avoided a three-game losing streak and fell below .500 for the first time since they were 5-6 on Nov. 15.

Memphis forward Jeff Green finished with 17 points, Marc Gasol scored 16 points with six assists, Zach Randolph had 16 points off the bench and Courtney Lee scored 13 points.

              Trail Blazers 98, Kings 94

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- C.J. McCollum scored 35 points, and Portland used a late surge to defeat Sacramento at Sleep Train Arena.

McCollum, playing with usual backcourt mate Damian Lillard sidelined for the fourth straight game with inflammation in his left plantar fascia, canned 13 of 27 shots to help the Blazers to their second win in as many nights. He came up with a loose ball and converted a jumper for a 93-87 lead, then canned a wing jumper with 31 seconds made it 95-89.

Kings center DeMarcus Cousins finished with 36 points and six rebounds. His second 3-pointer of the contest cut Portland's lead to 95-92 with 24 seconds left. But after McCollum knocked in one of two free throws, Cousins missed a 3-pointer to end it.

Bledsoe injury and personnel changes could make things ugly for the Suns

Now that we're past the Christmas Day games, the next big event on the NBA docket is the All-Star Game in February. It will be held north of the border this season, and Kobe Bryant leads all players with 719,235 votes in the initial returns. I am as sentimental as the next guy, but Kobe wouldn't get my vote.

Instead, I would tab Steph Curry and Russell Westbrook as the West backcourt starters, with Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green in the frontcourt. For the Eastern Conference, I like Kyle Lowry and Jimmy Butler in the backcourt, with Andre Drummond, LeBron James and Paul Millsap representing the frontcourt.

Let's take a look at some of the other goings-on around the league.

                Spread Watch

The Phoenix Suns were in the news on Sunday, but not for anything good. First, its star point guard, Eric Bledsoe, will have surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn meniscus. Bledsoe ranks 29th (of 326) in PER and 30th (of 424) in RPM this season. Though Phoenix still has Brandon Knight to run its offense, Bledsoe is a much better on-ball defender. And Phoenix allows more than 7 ppp with Knight on the court, and Bledsoe off.

The other news on Sunday involved personnel. Suns management fired two assistant coaches, Jerry Sichting and Mike Longabardi, and promoted Earl Watson and Nate Bjorkgren to the bench, to work with head coach Jeff Hornacek. All of this was opposed by Hornacek, but he didn't have any choice in the matter. And, should Phoenix not break out of its slump (it's lost four in a row SU/ATS, and is 12-20 SU and 13-19 ATS this season), then Hornacek will be handed his walking papers, as well.

However, I'm not sure how Phoenix will get back on track. After all, its first three opponents this week are Cleveland, San Antonio and Oklahoma City. And 10 of its next 13 games are against teams currently over .500. With the Cavaliers coming into Monday night's game off a 29-point loss at Portland, I expect things to get much worse for Phoenix, before they get better.

                Total Watch

The Atlanta Hawks have gone 'Over' the total in six-straight games (6-0 SU and 5-1 ATS). In those games, the Hawks have averaged 111.5 points on 51.2 percent shooting (255-of-498).

One of the keys to the Hawks' offensive resurgence has been Kent Bazemore, who coach Mike Budenholzer inserted into the starting lineup on December 14. It was basically an "offense-for-defense" move by coach Bud, as Bazemore replaced defensive specialist Thabo Sefolosha.

This week, Atlanta will play road games at Indiana, Houston and New York. The Hawks/Pacers series has seen its last three games go 'Over' the total. Atlanta and Houston's two games last season both went 'Over' (along with eight of their last 12). Finally, Atlanta and New York have gone 'Over' in three straight, and six of seven.

                Injury Watch

The Los Angeles Clippers rank among the most disappointing teams this season. They're 18-13 SU and 11-16-4 ATS. But the worst metric for the Clippers is their scoring margin.

This season, Los Angeles is outscoring its foes by just 1.65 ppg, which ranks 12th in the league. In contrast, the Clippers' chief Western Conference rivals (Warriors (13.28), Spurs (13.09) and Thunder (8.20)) reside as the Top 3 teams.

On Christmas, the Clippers got a lump of coal, as their best player, Blake Griffin, tore a tendon in his left quad. Griffin is averaging 23.2 ppg and 8.7 rpg, and will be sidelined for at least two weeks. Los Angeles did win (and cover) its first game without Griffin, as it won 109-104, as a 2-point favorite on Saturday. But given that the Clippers have not covered any of their last nine games off a pointspread win, Monday's game against Washington seems to be a great spot to fade the Griffin-less Clippers. And, should Los Angeles upset both the Wizards and Hornets in its next two games, then its game on New Year's Eve at New Orleans could be a landmine, as it would be its 5th game in seven nights.

                Schedule Watch

After giving fans a great Christmas Day slate of games, the NBA schedule maker clearly felt it wasn't important to have the league's best teams square off the following week. For the next seven days, there are hardly any "must-see" games. But the Houston Rockets will be involved in two of them.

On Thursday, Houston will host Golden State for the second time this season. The Rockets' first chance to avenge last season's playoff defeat didn't go very well, as the Warriors won, 112-92, back on October 30. But the Rockets are playing MUCH better now than they did earlier this season (11-6 SU and 10-7 ATS since Thanksgiving), and Golden State will be playing its third game in four nights.

Then, on January 2nd, the Rockets will travel the Alamo City to face San Antonio. The Spurs will surely be in an ornery mood, as they'll be looking for some payback, after losing, 88-84, on Christmas to the Rockets. San Antonio is 9-0-1 ATS its last 10 home games (and 13-3-1 ATS its last 17, overall) when playing with revenge from a loss earlier in the season.
