    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Milwaukee 68, Wisconsin 67-- Panthers ended 22-game series losing streak.

    -- Dayton 72, Vanderbilt 67-- Flyers building a solid at-large resume.

-- Grizzlies 93, Pistons 92-- Matt Barnes stuck half-court shot with 0:01.1 left.

-- Pirates traded 2B Neil Walker to the Mets for P Jon Niese.

-- Mets signed SS Asdrubal Cabrera, have new DP combo with Walker.

-- A's traded 3B Brett Lawrie to White Sox for couple of pitching prospects.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

    13) Why is Steph Curry such a great shooter? He works his ass off, thats why. He says he makes between 200-350 shots every day during the season and probably a lot more in the offseason. He once made 77 3-pointers in a row at a practice. You aren't born that way; if more players practiced this much, they'd shoot a lot better.

    12) Cool trivia; Don Sutton is in baseball's Hall of Fame; his career record in the majors was 324-256. Turns out he lost one game in high school; the opposing pitcher in his one loss was Kenny Stabler, the great Raiders' quarterback.

    11) I was in a deli for a sandwich earlier this week; guy at the register has the biggest arms I've ever seen, like one of the WWE wrestlers on TV. Turns out the guy is a pro bodybuilder but apparently there isn't a whole lot of money in that. Go figure.

    10) Orioles offered Chris Davis a 7-year deal for $150M; how on God's green earth does he turn that down? Apparently Davis wants eight years, $200M. Granted, he hit 47 HRs with 117 RBI LY but that was playing half his games in Baltimore's closet of a ballpark. His numbers would go down most anywhere else. Just take the money.

    9) Heisman Trophy is one of the most overrated things on earth; in what other sport is the Player of the Year award talked about so much?

    8) Five years ago, Conference USA was the #8 basketball league in America; now, it is the #22 league, as the football maneuvering has crippled the basketball part. The mid-major leagues that are basketball-only have mostly all passed by C-USA.

    7) Was pretty cool seeing Ray Allen, Richard Hamilton at courtside Tuesday nite watching UConn playing Maryland at Madison Square Garden. Those guys made ton of money playing in the NBA, but still took out time to cheer on the alma mater.

    6) Paris Hotel is Las Vegas is getting a 10,000 square foot beer garden above Hexx restaurant that will seat up to 500 people. One thing about Las Vegas is places are always being improved/added. If you like to eat/drink, Vegas is where to go.

    5) I think the NFL makes a mistake fining players for celebration penalties; I don't think it is a deterrent. My suggestion is to still throw flags for celebrations but get rid of the fines- it gives the media too easy a chance to rip the league ("No Fun League"). Let the players act out after they score TDs, let the coaches police things after player gets a penalty for being a selfish human.

    4) If the Browns fire Mike Pettine this winter, they'll have their sixth head coach in nine years next season- this is no way to run a business, especially one worth close to $1B, thats billion with a B. Hire a coach, give him five years to run his program and recruit free agents-- things couldn't be worse than they are in Cleveland right now.

    3) SMU has a good basketball team; they pounded Michigan by 24 the other night, but the Mustangs aren't going to the postseason this year because they committed academic fraud. Larry Brown was out of college coaching for 25 years, mostly because he put his last school (Kansas) on probation too. Hmmm....

    2) Not only does Big X play a 9-game conference football schedule, now they're going to have to play at least one other Power 5 game every year. My guess is the phones at Vanderbilt, Purdue and Wake Forest are going to be ringing off the hook soon, since they're the perennial doormats in the other Power 5 leagues. .

    1) I'm genuinely concerned that if Donald Trump became President, we would have a civil war in this country; you can't have a leader who openly insults more than half the citizens. Part of me thinks he is saying outrageous stuff on purpose so he will lose, but no matter what he does, he doesn't drop in the polls. Weird thing.

No matter what, some day all this is going to make one hell of a movie.

Three college football bowl bets you shouldn't wait on

Utah currently stands as a 2.5-point favorite over BYU and most books still have that line. But a few have gone to -3 already.

Las Vegas Bowl: Utah Utes (-2.5) vs. BYU Cougars

Utah currently stands as a 2.5-point favorite over BYU and most books still have that line. But a few have gone to -3 already. I expect this line to hit the key number of three at the majority of sportsbooks, so shrewd bettors should jump on this game now.

Brigham Young is losing head coach Bronco Mendenhall to Virginia, but he will coach the Cougars in this game. However, that's a tricky situation, especially for the players who will be returning to BYU next season. They may tune Mendenhall out, and the distraction is enough to make BYU a fragile team. Utah has no such issues, and they'll come with their best effort against an in-state rival. Bettors should play this game now and take the best of the number.

New Mexico Bowl: New Mexico Lobos (+10) vs. Arizona Wildcats

This line briefly came out with Arizona as a -12.5 to -13 point favorite over New Mexico, but it quickly settled on the current line of -10. This line should eventually tick down below the key number of 10 at some point, so bettors should get on this game now.

New Mexico is essentially playing a home game. The Lobos went 5-2 SU at home this season with one of those losses only coming by seven points. Arizona went 2-4 SU on the road with one of its wins coming by seven points. The Wildcats went 1-4 SU down the stretch while the Lobos went 3-2 SU over their last five games. Take New Mexico now before the line goes lower.

Hawaii Bowl: Cincinnati Bearcats vs. San Diego State Aztecs (N/A)

Cincinnati and San Diego State are complete opposites. The Bearcats have a potent offense and a terrible defense. Cincinnati likes to throw the ball a lot. They average 373 passing yards per game. The Aztecs run the ball essentially on every play, averaging 48 rushing attempts per game while running for 235 yards per game.

This total, which has yet to hit the board, will be a difficult one for the oddsmakers to set because of the opposite styles of play. Cincinnati is currently a 1.5-point favorite over San Diego State. That indicates that this total may be shaded to the Over just a bit. Cincinnati to the Over and San Diego State to the Under are correlated in this game.

Top 25 roundup: No. 1 Michigan State off to 10-0 start

Senior guard Denzel Valentine had another impressive all-around performance, leading No. 1 Michigan State to a 78-35 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Wednesday night at Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich.

Valentine, who already has two triple-doubles this season, scored 11 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had six assists. Guard Bryn Forbes scored 14 points and guard Eron Harris came off the bench to add 12 points for Michigan State.

The Spartans are 10-0 for the first time since the 1991-92 season and off to the second-best start of the Tom Izzo era. Michigan State plays host to Florida on Saturday.

The Hawks (1-8) have lost four in a row and face No. 6 Maryland on Saturday.

Forward Dominique Elliot led Maryland-Eastern Shore with 11 points.

                No. 2 Kansas 92, Holy Cross 59

Junior guards Wayne Selden and Frank Mason scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, as No. 2 Kansas claimed its sixth consecutive victory, stomping Holy Cross in Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan.

The Jayhawks took a 17-point lead into the second half, but the Crusaders responded with an 11-0 run to pull within 52-46.

That string included a four-point play by junior center Matt Husek, but the 3-pointer he made with 16:55 left was the last bucket for Holy Cross until the 3:43 mark.

                No. 5 Kentucky 88, Eastern Kentucky 67

Fifth-ranked Kentucky, making its first appearance since being upset Dec. 3 at UCLA, rolled past Eastern Kentucky at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky.

Kentucky, which was criticized by coach John Calipari for a lack of physical play this season, scored 28 of its first 30 points from inside the paint against the Colonels.

All told, the Wildcats scored 16 consecutive field goals from close range before finally sinking a 3-pointer nearly 17 minutes deep into the first half. Kentucky led 50-36 at halftime, hitting 75 percent of its two-point field goal attempts (18 of 24).

                No. 11 Purdue 93, Howard 55

No. 11 Purdue got 19 points and 12 rebounds from freshman Caleb Swanigan and used a 36-6 first-half blitz to run away from Howard at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Ind.

Howard played without Division I scoring leader James Daniel, who missed the game with a toe injury. Daniel was averaging 28.4 points per game.

Purdue, which got 14 points from Kendall Stephens and 10 from Rapheal Davis, is 10-0 for the first time since the 2009-2010 team won its first 14.

                No. 13 Arizona 85, Fresno State 72

Freshman forward Allonzo Trier scored 27 points to lead No. 13 Arizona over Fresno State at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz.

Senior forward Ryan Anderson had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats. Junior guard Kadeem Allen scored 13 points and senior guard Gabe York had 12.

Senior guard Marvelle Harris scored 23 points for the Bulldogs.

                No. 15 Providence 66, Boston College 51

Ben Bentil had 16 points and eight rebounds before sustaining a first-half injury, and an illness sidelined Kris Dunn for the second half, but No. 15 Providence held on for a victory over Boston College at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.

Bentil apparently hurt his left leg after missing a jumper with 1:56 to play in the first half. He limped to the locker room and did not return.

                Dayton 72, No. 21 Vanderbilt 67

Dayton overcame an early 16-point deficit and rallied past Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tenn.

Forward Kendall Pollard scored 21 points to lead the Flyers and guard Scoochie Smith added 13 against the Commodores, who were without injured 7-foot-1 power forward Luke Kornet.

Vandy had its chances late, trailing by four when center Damian Jones blocked a Smith jumper with 49 seconds left and the shot clock running down. But Pollard wound up with the ball after the deflection and hit a contested 3-pointer from the top of the key -- just his second 3-pointer this year -- putting Dayton up 69-62 with 43 seconds left.
