Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

13) Steve Sarkisian is suing USC for wrongful termination; he is asking for a lot of money. He got fired for showing up drunk- he might even have coached a game or two under the influence. Takes a lot of onions to sue your employer after that happens.

12) Dodgers signed pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma as a free-agent; Seattle then filled that hole by acquiring Wade Miley from Boston. Iwakuma is good if he is healthy.

11) Speaking of the Dodgers, Peter Gammons wrote last week that new manager Dave Roberts wasn't allowed to pick any of his coaches-- very unusual. Why would you hire a guy who has never managed, then not let him pick any of his coaches?

10) Saints ran a blocked PAT back for two points Sunday, first time that happened in an NFL game-- rule has been in college for lot longer. Counting that block, there were nine PATs missed this week- there were eight missed all of last year.

9) UMass-Lowell 68, Boston College 66-- If you're in same league as Louisville, Duke, North Carolina and Virginia, and you lose to Mass-Lowell, its going to be a very long winter. Some BC players apparently got food poisoning at a Chipotle, too- they didn't practice on Monday.

8) When Austin Davis started for Cleveland Sunday, he became their 24th starting QB since 1999. If you own the Browns, just hire a coach, keep him there for a few years, give him a chance. Without continuity, it is hard to develop a good program.

7) Oklahoma 78, Villanova 55-- This game was played in a neat old arena on Pearl Harbor; no air conditioning, seats close to the court. It really did look like a summer league game. Both of these teams should be high seeds in March, but this was really a surprisingly easy win for Oklahoma.

6) Nancy Pelosi was Speaker of the House from 2007-11; she is obviously a very influential politician. About ten years ago, her husband was an investor in an ill-fated football league, the UFL. Apparently he and others lost tens of millions on the deal. I'm reading s book about a guy who coached in that league- must be nice to be rich.

5) In Matt Schaub's last nine starts, he's thrown six pick-6's; no bueno.

4) Indianapolis Colts fired OC Pep Hamilton earlier this year, replaced him with Rob Chudzinski. Problem is, Chudzinski doesn't know the language of Indy's offense, so when he calls plays, it has to go thru a third party so the QB gets the right terminology called in to the quarterback's helmet.

Wouldn't it be easier to let Matt Hasselbeck call his own plays? He's started 157 NFL games, he has to be able to call his own game. QBs called the plays in the old days-- it is not always progress when you change things.

3) Last four years, Big 14 teams have played in 33 bowl games; they've been the underdog in 27 of those 33 games, going 13-20 SU.

2) Under-reported sports story of the year: Remember Michigan State's miracle TD on last play of the game to beat Michigan? Well, when the Michigan State players ran on the field to celebrate, so many of them jumped on the pile that the kid who scored the TD dislocated his hip and is out for the year, may never play again.

1) Cowboys 19, Redskins 16-- Three NFC East teams are 5-7; they're all tied for first place, with Dallas at 4-8. You win your division, you get a home game in the playoffs; it is almost guaranteed that the #5 seed will be a hefty road favorite over the NFC East champ in the first round of the playoffs.

NFL Week 14 betting odds coming down hard on patchwork Patriots

“The Patriots didn’t deserve to drop their last two games, especially this week, but they could lose a legit one here." - John Lester, Bookmaker.eu.

As Week 14 dawns in the NFL, the seemingly impervious New England Patriots suddenly look, well, pervious. The Pats got out to a 10-0 SU start, then were a 2.5-point favorite against a backup quarterback at Denver two weekends ago and lost outright, 30-24 in overtime.

Sunday’s result, though, was much more surprising. New England (10-2 SU, 5-5-2 ATS) went off as 9.5-point home chalk against underwhelming Philadelphia, gave up 28 straight points after taking a 14-0 lead, and lost 35-28.

Now, the banged-up Patriots have their second Sunday night road game in three weeks, traveling to face a Houston team desperate to stay in the playoff hunt. The Texans (6-6 SU and ATS) had their four-game SU and ATS win streak iced in Buffalo Sunday, losing 30-21 as 3-point underdogs.

John Lester, senior lines manager at Bookmaker.eu, sent New England out as a field-goal favorite.

“The Patriots didn’t deserve to drop their last two games, especially this week, but they could lose a legit one here,” Lester said. “Most people are going to scratch their heads at this line, but if we hang New England any higher, the sharps would hammer Houston. This is going to be a great Sunday night matchup.”

Minnesota Vikings at Arizona Cardinals (-7)

After surprisingly rising to the top of the NFC North, Minnesota (8-4 SU, 9-3 ATS) has cooled off with two losses – both at home – in its last three games. That includes Sunday’s beatdown at the hands of two-time defending NFC champion Seattle, which dealt the 2.5-point underdog Vikings a 38-7 loss.

On the flip side, Arizona (10-2 SU, 7-5 ATS) is riding a six-game SU winning streak (3-3 ATS). The Cardinals, 3.5-point faves at St. Louis Sunday, rolled to a 27-3 victory.

“The Cardinals have the personnel in the secondary to employ exactly the same game plan the Seahawks did against Minnesota in Week 13,” Lester said. “We felt comfortable opening this spread at a touchdown, and the early money came in on Arizona. There’s no doubt the Cards are a head above where the improving Vikings are, and Arizona is very dangerous at home.”

Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals (-3.5)

The Bengals used weak foes to regain their form, after a pair of losses following their 8-0 SU start. Cincinnati (10-2 SU) ripped host St. Louis in Week 12, then drubbed Cleveland Sunday 37-3 giving 7.5 points at home, and the Bengals now lead the league with a 10-1-1 ATS record.

Pittsburgh also had a huge offensive outburst in the Sunday night contest. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had no ill effects from a concussion suffered a week earlier, as the Steelers (7-5 SU, 7-4-1 ATS) drubbed Indianapolis 45-10 giving 10 points at home.

But with the game on Sunday night, Lester said he’d hold off on the line.

“If the Steelers come through Sunday night relatively healthy, we’ll look to make Cincinnati around a 3-point favorite,” he said. “The Bengals have been absolutely steam-rolling weak competition of late, but this should be an old-fashioned AFC North battle.”

Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers (N/A)

Green Bay got easily the most stunning victory of Week 13, converting a Hail Mary on an untimed down, due to penalty as time expired in Thursday’s game at Detroit. The Packers (8-4 SU, 7-5 ATS) won 27-23 as 2.5-point road faves to end a 1-4 SU and ATS slide.

Dallas, amazingly enough, remains in the hunt in the dismal NFC East. But the Cowboys (3-8 SU and ATS) still have Week 13 work left to do, playing at Washington in the Monday night contest, and they won’t have QB Tony Romo (collarbone, again) the rest of the season. So Matt Cassel will take the helm.

“If the Cowboys pull out a win Monday night, there will be plenty of public bettors predicting they will make the playoffs. So Monday’s game will somewhat dictate how we set this line,” Lester said. “Green Bay has looked like a shell of its former self, and Dallas has a defense that can disrupt Aaron Rodgers and Co. Of course, you’ve got a bit of a revenge angle for the Cowboys too.”

That would be due to Dallas’ controversial 26-21 playoff loss at Green Bay last January.

The Panthers are making the 1972 Dolphins nervous and aren't get much respect from oddsmakers against the flightless Falcons in Week 14.

Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers (-7.5)

Isn’t this about the time that the cranky old 1972 Dolphins of Mercury Morris and Don Shula start to worry? Carolina is four wins away from an undefeated regular season, which would match New England’s 2007 mark and begin speculation about besting the Fins’ run-the-table season 43 years ago.

First up is offense-starved Atlanta, which averaged better than 32 points in winning its first five games but in its last seven (1-6) has not scored more than 21 as its season has come crashing down. The Falcons have gone more than two months (Oct. 4) without covering a spread, and aren’t getting much love from early bettors in this one – even with the half point. Unless Cam Newton is lying and really is concussed, this line stays put.

Spread to wait on

Detroit Lions at St. Louis Rams (-1)

This basically a pick’em game anyway, but with significant early money down on the Lions, the Rams might not have to give even the one by the time this one kicks off. There’s not much in the way of motivation for either team (both are 4-8 and just about out of playoff contention), but by the time this one kicks off Detroit will have had several things going its way.

The Lions are on a few extra days of rest after playing on Thursday (Dec. 3) as well as decent momentum despite losing on the Aaron Rodgers Hail Mary. The Lions had won three in a row prior, including a mid-November win in Green Bay. St. Louis goes in with five straight SU losses (0-4-1 ATS). Number could easily slide to pick’em.

New Orleans Saints at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (51)

Quietly and away from the Jameis Winston spotlight, the Buccaneers have strung together a month of decent defensive efforts. In games against Dallas, Philadelphia, Indianapolis an Atlanta, the Bucs have given up an average of fewer than 17 points a game in pulling to 6-6 and remaining on the fringes of a playoff spot. The Saints (7-4-1 on the over this season) will provide a good barometer for Tampa Bay’s defense.

The Golden State Warriors are on the verge of matching the second-longest winning streak in NBA history but may be looking at their biggest challenge. The Warriors will try to make it 27 straight wins dating back to last season when they visit the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday.

Golden State improved to 4-0 on its seven-game road trip with a 114-98 win at Brooklyn on Sunday after escaping Toronto with a three-point triumph the previous night, and Stephen Curry continues to put on a show. The reigning MVP is averaging 34.5 points and is 26-of-43 from 3-point range over the first four games of the trip, with a pair of 40-point performances thrown in. The Pacers have their own superstar in Paul George, who bounced back from a lackluster performance in Portland by pouring in a career-high 48 points in a 122-119 setback at Utah on Saturday that closed out a 2-2 road trip. Indiana recovered from a 17-point deficit to force overtime before falling to the Jazz and are 1-2 in December after an 11-2 November.

NBA roundup: Suns beat Bulls on last-second fade away

CHICAGO -- Mirza Teletovic grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a fade-away shot with 0.3 seconds remaining, leading the Phoenix Suns to a 103-101 comeback win against the Chicago Bulls on Monday night.

Teletovic's rebound was off an open 3-pointer taken by Jon Leuer from the corner with two seconds left, after the Suns battled back from a 16-point deficit to tie the game.

Chicago led 77-61 starting the fourth quarter but coughed up the advantage. They were outscored 25-11 in the first seven minutes of the fourth and 42-24 overall in the frame, letting Phoenix cap a tough six-game road trip by ending a four-game losing streak.

Raptors 102, Lakers 93

TORONTO -- Kyle Lowry compiled 27 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Toronto was strong down the stretch to defeat Los Angeles.

Terrence Ross added 22 points -- including nine in the fourth quarter -- for the Raptors, who lost their previous two games.

Kobe Bryant scored 21 points and had eight rebounds.

NEW YORK -- In a contest billed as the best European player in the history of the league against the upstart Latvian rookie, it was Dallas that overtook the New York.

The 7-foot-3 Kristeps Porzingis, playing against his childhood idol from Germany, led the Knicks with 28 points, one point shy of his brief career high. He single-handedly brought New York back from a 98-81 deficit with 5:52 to play by scoring eight straight points to slice the deficit to 101-97 with 43 seconds to play.

Dirk Nowitzki and Deron Williams closed it out by making two free throws apiece. Nowitzki topped Dallas with 25 points and six rebounds. Williams poured in 20 points and added seven assists.

Spurs 119, 76ers 68

PHILADELPHIA -- LaMarcus Aldridge scored a season-high 26 points as San Antonio embarrassed woeful Philadelphia Monday night.

The Spurs rested Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, and Kawhi Leonard did not play because of illness. San Antonio nonetheless shot a season-high 61.8 percent from the floor, and recorded 32 assists on a season-high-tying 46 field goals.

Aldridge, who made 11 of 15 shots from the floor, also grabbed nine rebounds. Tony Parker collected 12 points while playing only the first half for the Spurs, who improved to 18-4 with their eighth victory in nine games.

Celtics 111, Pelicans 93

NEW ORLEANS -- Isaiah Thomas scored a game-high 22 points, including all four of his 3-point attempts, and the stifling Boston defense held New Orleans' five starters to just 25 points.

The Celtics led 53-44 at halftime, extended their lead to 81-67 at the end of three quarters and led by as many as 22 in the fourth quarter. The victory gave the Celtics a 3-2 record on their five-game road trip.

Kelly Olynyk had season-high 21 points and Jae Crowder added 17 for the Celtics, who held the Pelicans to 41.1 percent shooting.

Hornets 104, Pistons 84

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Cody Zeller led a balanced attack with 20 points, and Charlotte cruised to an easy win.

The Hornets won for the seventh time in their last nine games and raised their record at home to 9-3.

They took control early and led by as many as 14 in the first half, then pushed the lead up to as many as 26 in the third quarter. They held Detroit to 36.8 percent shooting from the field and held a whopping 57-41 rebound advantage.

Wizards 114, Heat 103

MIAMI -- Bradley Beal had a key steal and dunk to lead Washington past Miami.

Beal, who had 21 points, stripped Dwyane Wade of the ball at midcourt and then beat him down the court, slamming the ball to punctuate the play that snapped a 103-103 tie.

Washington overcame productive games by the Heat's backcourt -- Wade had 26 points and nine assists, and Goran Dragic had 20 points and nine assists.

Bucks 90, Blazers 88

MILWAUKEE -- John Henson blocked Meyers Leonard's shot at a possible game-winner giving Milwaukee the win.

Henson's final stand capped off a furious rally for the Bucks, who watched a 14-point lead disappear in the second half and fell behind by six late in the final quarter.

Forward Giannis Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee with 17 points while Greg Monroe added 16 with 12 rebounds.

Clippers 110, Timberwolves 106

MINNEAPOLIS -- DeAndre Jordan scored a team-high 20 points, leading Los Angeles Clippers past Minnesota.

The game featured 15 lead changes, including several in the fourth quarter. Forward Blake Griffin's lay-in with 25.5 seconds left gave the Clippers the lead for good.

The loss was Minnesota's fourth consecutive.
