    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)
six most popular picks in Week 13 season record: 35-36-2

    6) Broncos -4 (366)-- Brock's (Osweiler) Bandwagon is picking up steam.

    5) Chiefs -2.5 (414)-- Kansas City looking to win/cover sixth in a row.

    4) Giants +2.5 (424)-- Both teams are playing in their home stadium.

    3) Saints +7 (432)-- Still lot of doubters for unbeaten Carolina.

    2) Texans +3.5 (439)-- Dome team in Buffalo in December........

    1) Seahawks even (484)-- 6-5 Seattle led in fourth quarter in every game.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.....

    13) Michigan State 16, Iowa 13-- Spartans scored with 0:27 left to win Big 14 title and a likely spot in the national championship playoff. State's three best wins all came in game's final minute, over Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa- a memorable season.

    12) Bowling Green 34, Northern Illinois 14-- That was the good news last night; now the bad news- coach Dino Babers bolted Bowling Green for Syracuse, which was #117 in passing this year. Babers' Falcons were #1, albeit in a lesser league. It is second time in three years Bowling Green had a winning coach skip town-- Dave Clawson bolted for Wake Forest two years ago, where he has yet to have any success.

    11) Texas 23, Baylor 17-- Bears actually ran out of QBs, were down to #4 guy who throws the ball like a punter; still, they were down 20-0, rallied and had ball with shot to win before RB fumbled on last drive. It makes me want to puke that three 5-7 teams are going to bowl games- simply put, there are too many bowl games.

    10) Alabama 29, Florida 15-- How did the Gators win so many games with that kid playing QB? Not only is he a terrible passer, he got suspended earlier in year when he flunked a drug test. The other QB got suspended for using PEDs- if they made a movie with that storyline, nobody would believe it.

    9) Warriors 112, Raptors 109-- Toronto had chance to hand Golden State its first loss, but missed couple of key FTs in last minute; Warriors are 21-0, the best start for any team in any pro sport- they play in Brooklyn today. I'm seriously wondering if at some point, losing a game will become a relief, so they can give Curry/Thompson bit of a rest? Its a very long season- they need to be somewhat fresh for the playoffs.

    8) Couple of horrendous home losses that will hurt on Selection Sunday:
South Dakota 85, Minnesota 81, double OT
Missouri State 64, Oklahoma State 63

    7) Clemson 45, North Carolina 37-- Tigers were up 14-9 in first half when punter decided to run for a first down on 4th and 14 and failed miserably. Dabo Swinney then went off on the kid, throwing a Mike Dtika-like tirade in the kid's face on the sideline.

The punter is an academic All-American who used to be a walk-on-- if they had lost this game, he might have been a walk-home punter.

    6) More shocking than Zack Greinke's $34.3M a year deal is Jeff Samardzija somehow snookering the Giants into giving him $18M a year for five years- he was AWFUL last year, I mean terrible and I like the guy after his stint with the A's in 2014.

Johnny Cueto's agent had to be laughing his butt off when he saw those numbers.

    5) Georgetown 79, Syracuse 72-- Hoyas spanked Syracuse in first game of a 9-game suspension for Jim Boeheim, which will carry into ACC play. Good news is that rest of this month is a parade of stiffs for Syracuse, so they'll right the ship soon.

    4) Arizona football coach Rich Rodriguez turned South Carolina down Saturday night for its head coaching job- media types were surprised. Following Steve Spurrier is not a good idea-- ask Ron Zook or Barry Wilson, who replaced the Ol' Ball Coach at Florida, Duke-- neither one lasted too long.

    3) "They wanted the game more" was one TV analyst's description of Arizona's upset win at Gonzaga Saturday. How the hell does he know who wanted what? It is very simple; Arizona got down big early, then played really well in the second half and pulled an upset. It is lazy and a cliche to just say "they wanted the game more".

    2) Atlanta Falcons are getting a new stadium in downtown Atlanta; the place they play in now, the Georgia Dome is only 23 years old. Why do they need a new stadium?

    1) Arizona State 67, Texas A&M 54-- Solid win for Bobby Hurley's team over the 18th-ranked Aggies- they were up 25 in second half. At this point, Hurley has to be the odds-on favorite to replace Mike Krzyzewski at Duke when that day comes.

Top 25 roundup: No. 19 Arizona rallies past No. 13 Gonzaga

Gabe Marks scored 18 points to lead No. 19 Arizona to a 68-63 nonconference victory over No. 13 Gonzaga on Saturday in Spokane, Wash.

Marks helped Arizona erase a 38-28 halftime deficit by sinking his first four 3-point shots of the game, all after halftime.

Kyle Wiltjer led Gonzaga with 33 points and Domantas Sabonis added 18 points and 16 rebounds. Wiltjer, who had nine rebounds, combined with Sabonis to score Gonzaga's first 26 points.

The Bulldogs led most of the game, but Arizona erased Gonzaga's final lead, 62-61, with a 6-0 run.

              No. 3 Michigan State 76, Binghamton 33

Denzel Valentine continued his torrid start with 13 points, 12 rebounds and four assists and Michigan State put itself in position to take over the No. 1 ranking by clobbering Binghamton in East Lansing, Mich.

The No. 3 Spartans, who defeated Louisville on Wednesday in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, will likely gain the top spot after losses by No. 1 Kentucky and No. 2 Maryland this week. The last time Michigan State held the No. 1 spot was two seasons ago, when it topped the polls for three weeks.

Bryn Forbes scored 14 points, Eron Harris contributed 11 points and five assists and Marvin Clark Jr. added nine points and six rebounds for the Spartans. Valentine, who was averaging 20.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 8.4 assists, had 13 points and seven rebounds before halftime.

              No. 4 Kansas 75, Harvard 69

Frank Mason scored 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and Kansas survived a second-half scare from Harvard in Lawrence, Kan.

Harvard, which trailed by as many as 16 in the first half, rallied to make it a game late. Weisner Perez tied it 56-56 on two free throws with 7:35 left before Kansas used a run to build a lead.

              No. 7 Duke 82, Buffalo 59

Brandon Ingram scored 23 points and Grayson Allen had 22 as Duke withstood some early shooting woes to defeat Buffalo in Durham, N.C.

Forward Amile Jefferson's 13 points also helped Duke, which won its sixth game in a row. Ingram and Allen combined for all of Duke's first 15 points. Ingram, a freshman, also had four blocked shots as he followed up his breakout game against Indiana from three days earlier.

By the end, Allen had feasted on the foul line by making 11 free throws. Allen also had 11 rebounds for his first career double-double.

              No. 10 Virginia 67, William & Mary 52

Virginia used a balanced attack and solid bench production to grind out a victory over William & Mary in Charlottesville, Va.

Malcolm Brogdon and Anthony Gill each finished with 16 points for the Cavaliers, who won their sixth straight game. Darius Thompson added 12.

Daniel Dixon led William & Mary with 15 points and Omar Prewitt added 14 points for the Tribe, who could not overcome 19 turnovers.

              No. 11 Purdue 70, New Mexico 58

Purdue 7-footers Isaac Haas and A.J, Hammons combined for 37 points and 17 rebounds as the Boilermakers defeated New Mexico in West Lafayette, Ind.

Haas, who finished with 21 points, and Hammons, who added 16, combined for 23 of Purdue's 39 second-half points. Hammons added 11 rebounds, and Haas had six.

Purdue, 8-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 team won its first 14, trailed by as many as four during the second halt before going inside to its 7-footers to pull away during the final 5:48.

              No. 12 Xavier 95, Western Kentucky 64

Trevon Bluiett scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Xavier over Western Kentucky at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati.

James Farr finished with 18 points, Myles Davis added 16 points and six assists and Jalen Reynolds and guard Edmond Sumner each added 12 points for Xavier, which shot 57 percent from the field and outrebounded Western Kentucky 40-32.

The 8-0 start matches the best under seventh-year coach Chris Mack.

              Georgetown 79, No. 14 Syracuse 72

Bradley Hayes scored a career-high 21 points and Isaac Copeland had 14 as Georgetown defeated Syracuse in Washington, D.C.

Marcus Derrickson had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Hoyas, who led nearly from start to finish and by double figures for most of the game. Their 36-24 halftime lead ballooned to 21 at 47-26 early in the second half. Georgetown has won five of seven in the series and three straight games this season after a 1-3 start.

Michael Gbinije scored 23 points for the Orange, who lost to Wisconsin this week.

              Arizona State 67, No. 18 Texas A&M 54

Willie Atwood scored 15 points and Tra Holder added 13 as Arizona State knocked off Texas A&M in Tempe, Ariz.

Savon Goodman added 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Sun Devils, who closed the first half with a 22-3 run and won for the sixth time in seven games.

Danuel House had 17 points but was 3-of-15 on 3-pointers. Alex Caruso added 15 as the Aggies lost for the second time in three games

No. 20 West Virginia 87, Kennesaw State 54

Devin Williams scored 26 points in 24 minutes and West Virginia forced 31 turnovers while shredding Kennesaw State in Morgantown, W.Va.

Jonathan Holton added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Mountaineers, who built a double-digit lead in the first seven minutes and led 41-24 at half in a runaway.

Though West Virginia made only 15 of 29 free throws, it mattered little against the Owls, picked to finish last in the Atlantic Sun. The Mountaineers shot 52.3 percent from the floor and recorded assists on 23 of their 34 baskets.

              No. 22 SMU 98, New Hampshire 44

A 20-point first half by Keith Frazier powered SMU to a romp over New Hampshire in Dallas.

Frazier finished with 23 points after attempting just four shots in the second half as the Mustangs moved to 6-0. He was the first SMU player to score 20 in a first half since Paul McCoy against Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Dec. 31, 2008.

Jaleen Smith led New Hampshire with 14 points.

              No. 23 Providence 74, Rhode Island 72

Ben Bentil tipped home a rebound at the buzzer to give Providence a dramatic victory over in-state rival Rhode Island.

After Jared Terrell hit a jumper with 6.2 seconds left, the Friars brought the ball down the floor without calling a timeout. Chris Dunn missed a driving layup and Bentil was there for the putback and the win. The victory in the 126th meeting was the sixth straight for the Friars over the Rams.

Bentil led Providence with 23 points and eight rebounds. Rodney Bullock had 16 points and Dunn had 15.

              No. 24 Louisville 111, Grand Canyon 63

Damion Lee scored 24 points and Trey Lewis added 16 as Louisville coasted to a blowout win over Grand Canyon in Louisville, Ky.

Grand Canyon, coached by former NBA star Dan Majerle, is a former Division II program that is now D-1 but won't be NCAA Tournament-eligible until 2017-18.

The Cardinals broke out to a 61-30 lead at the intermission and then cruised home to victory over the Antelopes. The Cardinals shot 38 of 70 from the field (54.3 percent) and placed five players in double figures.
