Syracuse split its last six games after a 6-0 start; Orange sub least of any team in country- they've played schedule #252, open ACC play vs Pitt Wednesday. OSU forces turnovers 20.8% of time, has #28 eFG% defense, but they turn ball over 20.5% of time themselves. South Carolina State lost its last three games by 15-19-27 points; they lost 68-66 at Kansas State in only top 100 game.

Northwestern is 11-1 vs schedule #339; they've never been in NCAAs, not sure this schedule can get them there. Wildcats open conference play at Nebraska Wednesday; they've got #8 eFG% defense, but against a bad schedule. Loyola MD is 1-9, losing its top 100 games by 13-33 points- they've lost last seven games, have #304 eFG% defense- they lost two of last five games on overtime.

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)
Most popular picks in Week 16 season record: 50-46-2

Redskins (+3) were 4th most popular pick; they played Saturday night- W.

            7) Browns +12 (335)-- People showing faith in big underdogs this week- W.

            6) Rams +13.5 (353)-- St Louis lost its last ten visits to King County- W.

            5) Patriots -3 (411)-- Don't get many chances at New England -3- L.

            3) Vikings -4.5 (431)-- Going to be a frigid night in the Twin Cities.- W.

            2) Steelers -10 (437)-- Jimmy Clausen is 0-3 against spread this year- L.

            1) Broncos -3.5 (446)-- Denver could actually still miss the playoffs.

            **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

            13) Rams 23, Seahawks 17-- St Louis sweeps Seahawks for first time in 11 years; at 7-8, Rams are finishing strong, but when they go 3-1 vs Arizona/Seattle and miss the playoffs, its an empty feeling. St Louis was +3 in turnovers; last two weeks, teams with +2 or better turnover ratio are 14-0 SU.

            12) Bears 26, Buccaneers 21-- Tampa Bay faded down stretch, losing four of last five games; in those five games, Bucs started 37 drives 80+ yards from goal line, their opponents only 20. Bad special teams, lousy on 3rd down (9 of last 29). Up 14-13 in third quarter with ball in red zone, Winston threw an awful INT, giving up an easy FG. Chicago dominated game from that point on.

            11) Falcons 20, Panthers 13-- First loss of season for Carolina; not sure it is worst thing, takes some pressure off- they can rest banged-up guys next week. Atlanta was eliminated when the Giants got beat in Minnesota last night- they started season 5-0, so missing the playoffs.makes this season a crummy one.

            10) Bills 16, Cowboys 6-- Buffalo hosts the Jets next week, with chance to knock Rex Ryan's old team out of playoffs. Dallas is 1-10 with backup QB starting this year, and they used three of them. Broncos (Week 5) are only team this year to win a game they didn't score an offensive TD in, when other team did- Broncos also won a game in Week 1 when neither team scored an offensive TD.

            9) Saints 38, Jaguars 27-- New Orleans had 10 drives; five TDs, three FGs, not good day for Jaguars, who have now lost four of last five games. If you're the Saints, would you trade your coach for a draft pick and if so, how high a pick would you want? Lot of rumors out there that the Dolphins/Colts are interested in Sean Payton.

            8) Lions 32, 49ers 17-- Detroit won five of last seven games; if they're smart, they get rid of Jim Caldwell anyway, hire a defensive-minded coach who will keep OC Cooter on his staff. 49ers are 2-9 vs spread in its 11 losses, 4-8 vs the spread as an underdog of 6+ points. They must've really not liked Jim Harbaugh to fire him.

            7) Chiefs 17, Browns 13-- Chiefs won last nine games (7-2 against spread) have made playoffs despite starting season 1-5. Cleveland lost nine of last ten games (2-8 against spread) as another dismal season comes to an end. This is good time to point out that all 16 games next weekend will be divisional rivalry games.

            6) Colts 18, Dolphins 12-- Miami lost seven of last nine games (1-8 vs spread); their next coach will be a big name- they had ball in red zone five times in this game, scored only 12 points. Indy is still alive for playoff spot; they host hapless Titans, Houston plays Jacksonville. Still baffled how Ryan Tannehill never gets benched.

            5) Jets 26, Patriots 20 OT-- I'm pretty sure last NFL coach who chose to kick off to start OT was Marty Mornhinweg, who got fired shortly thereafter; if defense keeps Jets out of EZ on first drive, no one says a word. They didn't.

Tom Brady used to date actress Bridget Moynihan- they had a kid together- the young man's name is John Edward Thomas, as in J-E-T. Not a coincidence. Apparently Ms Moynihan holds a grudge-- hope she bet the Jets in this game.

            4) Texans 34, Titans 6-- Houston won six of its last eight games, despite using five QBs this season- they could be tough out in AFC playoffs. Tennessee lost six of its last seven games (0-6-1 vs spread); they're 1-10 vs spread when scoring less than 33 points. How happy will Jerry Jones be when Brandon Weeden starts a playoff game?

            3) Cardinals 38, Packers 8-- Next week's Sunday night game: Vikings-Packers, so for second week in row, a game in frigid conditions gets moved from noon to 7:30pm local time kickoff. Does no one care about fans who buy tickets? Packers' OL was useless in this game. Arizona won last nine games; they were -3 in turnovers in both their losses- they're the best team in the NFL right now.

            2) Ravens 20, Steelers 17-- Steelers now need to win in Cleveland and get help from Buffalo next week to make playoffs. Ravens found a competent backup QB in Mallett, who was cut by Houston when he missed plane to Miami game, after he took a day off when Hoyer was named starter this summer.

            1) Vikings 49, Giants 17-- Tank job by Giants, who were eliminated when Redskins won Saturday night. If you owned the Giants and it was your money being spent, do you bring Tom Coughlin back as coach? It was pretty much assumed in the media last summer that if he missed the playoffs this year it was sayonara.

And if you do fire a coach who won two Super Bowls, who do you bring in who will be better? Do you fire the GM, who hasn't drafted well? Interesting questions.

                    • Preview: Spartans (4-8) at Tar Heels (11-2)

                      Date: December 28, 2015 6:00 PM EDT

North Carolina's non-conference slate certainly hasn't been perfect - losses in both true road games make that abundantly clear - but it seems to be hurtling toward the ACC schedule feeling especially confident about its chemistry.

With one final tuneup before conference play gets underway, the seventh-ranked Tar Heels try to make it four straight victories Monday night as they begin a busy stretch with a visit from UNC-Greensboro.

North Carolina (10-2) was the nation's preseason No. 1 but won't head into its ACC schedule on top after blowing a 16-point lead at Northern Iowa and losing on a buzzer-beater at Texas this month.

Perhaps more important than the vanity of being the country's top-ranked team is what the Tar Heels found out about themselves. They're college basketball's most efficient offense, scoring 119 points per 100 possessions according to KenPom.com, and they're sharing the ball without turning it over. North Carolina's 1.89 assist-to-turnover ratio in non-conference play is the sport's third-best since 1996-97, including 71 assists to just 26 giveaways in three wins since the loss to the Longhorns.

"That's just where the chemistry comes along," forward Isaiah Hicks, the Tar Heels' top bench scorer at 8.8 points per game, said after last Monday's 94-70 win over Appalachian State. "You know where a player is going to be."

Hicks knows about the value of an open look. He's shooting 66.7 percent from the field thanks to a team that has four players - Joel Berry II, Marcus Paige, Justin Jackson and Theo Pinson - averaging at least 3.8 assists.

"(Theo) will pass it sometimes and you won't even know where it will be," Hicks said. "He just knows where his teammates are going to be. He drives and he knows he's got me, Brice (Johnson), one of the bigs down there or he got the corner open with Nate (Britt). This is all what the coaches tell us to do, somebody drop baseline, somebody fill the corner and stuff like that. It's just knowing the spots that we are going to be at."

Johnson has emerged as UNC's go-to player in the post, putting up 25, 27 and 22 points in the last three games, but the key to any long-term success for the Tar Heels is still Paige. The senior, who dealt with multiple leg injuries last season and missed the first six games this season with a hand injury, tweaked his ankle against Appalachian State and was limited to 17 minutes.

'I'm not worried about it at all. I'm going to be fine," said Paige, who is 16 of 33 from 3-point range. "And I'm not just saying that. Last year I was saying that I was fine, but I was hurt. This is nothing.'

Paige won't have as much recovery time after this one. North Carolina opens conference play Wednesday against Clemson before hosting Georgia Tech on Saturday and visiting Florida State two days later.

The Tar Heels had their way with Greensboro (4-8) in each of the past two Decembers, outscoring the Spartans by 54 points and holding a 97-54 edge on the glass.

UNCG is coming off a pretty strong effort in an ACC arena. The Spartans were tied with North Carolina State at the under-4 timeout Tuesday before falling 58-52, with the Wolfpack's 40.4 percent shooting effort UNCG's stingiest of the season against a Division I opponent.

'I thought for the most part we forced them into difficult shots, contested shots,' coach Wes Miller said. 'That's what our defense is supposed to be about.'

All five Spartans starters average between 9.2 and 11.4 points.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) Brice Johnson had 16 points and 16 rebounds to help No. 7 North Carolina roll past UNC Greensboro 96-63 on Monday night in its final nonconference game.

Marcus Paige added 14 points for the Tar Heels (11-2), who took a double-digit lead by midway through the first half and led by 19 by halftime - though they had some trouble putting the game out of reach against the Spartans (4-8). UNC led by at least 11 points throughout the second half though it didn't land a finishing blow until a 9-0 burst in the final 8 minutes stretched the lead.

Francis Alonso scored 11 of his 17 points after halftime to help UNCG hang around.

                            No. 9 BUTLER 92, IUPUI 54

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Kelan Martin scored 19 points and Roosevelt Jones had 17 points and five steals for Butler.

The Bulldogs (11-1) have won eight straight since a November loss to Miami. They are 7-0 at home this season.

IUPUI (4-11) was led by Darell Combs with 11 points and T.J. Henderson with 10, not nearly enough against Butler's up-tempo offense. The Jaguars have lost five of six and are 0-5 in this series, which began in 1997-98.

Butler never trailed but struggled to take control until using a 13-2 run late in the first half to extend the lead to 19 points.

It's the fifth time this season Butler has topped the 90-point mark.

                            No. 15 DUKE 105, ELON 66

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Freshman Brandon Ingram matched a season high with 26 points for Duke.

Ingram had 11 rebounds while freshman Luke Kennard added 18 points and Grayson Allen and Matt Jones had 17 apiece for the Blue Devils (10-2).

They shot 58 percent in the first half, led by 30 points after just over 13 minutes and put up 70 points at halftime - just the third time in school history they scored that many in a half - while reaching 100 for the second time this season.

Tanner Samson had 17 points to lead Elon (9-4), which shot 38 percent and had its six-game winning streak snapped.

                            No. 16 VILLANOVA 77, PENN 57

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Freshman Jalen Brunson scored 22 points to lead Villanova.

The Wildcats (10-2) scored the first 14 points and led 30-3, cruising in their final game before the Big East opener Thursday against No. 6 Xavier.

The undefeated Musketeers will surely prove a tougher test than the overwhelmed Quakers (5-7).

The Wildcats have won 13 straight games in the Big 5, round-robin play among five Philadelphia Division I basketball teams that dates to 1955.

Daniel Ochefu had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Villanova.

Jackson Donahue had 18 points for Penn, which missed 15 of 16 3-point attempts and shot 17 percent overall from the field in the first half.

The Wildcats beat Penn for the 13th straight time and sent the Quakers to their sixth loss overall in seven games.

No. 21 UTAH 115, COLLEGE OF IDAHO 74

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Dakarai Tucker and Kyle Kuzma both scored 17 points to help Utah survive an early scare.

Jakob Poeltl made all six of his field goal attempts on his way to 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Utes (11-2). Brandon Taylor scored 15 points and Lorenzo Bonam added 12 in the final tuneup for Pac-12 play, which begins later this week with three straight road games.

The Yotes raced to a 16-2 lead on the strength of four 3s and defensive pressure that forced three early turnovers.

Aitor Zubizarreta scored 19 points and Joey Nebeker had 15 for the College of Idaho (7-7), an NAIA school from Caldwell, Idaho.

                            • Preview: Owls (5-5) at Bearcats (10-3)

                              Date: December 29, 2015 3:00 PM EDT

Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin knows his team missed a few chances to bolster its resume against nationally ranked opponents. He hopes some adjustments will help his players continue to get better heading into conference play.

The No. 22 Bearcats are coming off another loss to a Top 25 team when they begin their American Athletic Conference schedule at home against a rested Temple squad on Tuesday afternoon.

Cincinnati (10-3) lost a close one to No. 11 Iowa State last time out, falling 81-79 on Dec. 22 despite rallying back from a 13-point deficit early in the second half to take a four-point lead late. The Bearcats missed their final three shots after Abdel Nader's 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining gave the Cyclones the lead.

It was their third loss in six games - all against teams currently ranked in the Top 25, including two by two points.

"It's a one-shot-and-done kind of game," said junior guard Troy Caupain, who scored 18 points. "It's the kind of game you play in March, and we got a chance to play one early."

Picked to finish third in the AAC, Cronin said his players grasp what this time of the year means in terms of transitioning to conference play.

"The guys understand that it's post-Christmas now," the Cincinnati coach said, according to the team's official website. "We obviously left a couple on the table that we could have put in the bank as far as building your profile. But for us it's just trying to improve. We've been trying to build a style of play with our offense and be a better offensive team this year. Along the way, we've had to clean some things up defensively. Defensive rebounding and turnovers are two areas where I know we can improve."

Cincinnati, which regularly boasts one of the nation's best defenses, allowed a team to score at least 70 for only the fourth time in 51 games dating back to the 2013-14 season. The only time it happened last season was in a 75-59 loss to Temple on Feb. 10 in Philadelphia.

The Owls (5-5) have struggled to score this season, however, failing to reach 70 points in six of 10 games, including three early losses to Top 25 teams. They've also shot less than 38 percent in three of their last four games, with leading scorer Quenton DeCosey shooting 25.7 percent in those three.

The Bearcats are among the nation's leaders in scoring defense (61.1 ppg) and opponent field-goal percentage (37.4) and six of their 13 opponents haven't cracked 60.

While Temple has lacked an offensive punch, it has excelled at taking care of the ball. The Owls, who are picked to finish sixth in the AAC, lead the country in fewest turnovers per game, averaging 8.5.

They haven't played since a 78-63 win over Delaware State on Dec. 19, when DeCosey's 20 points led the way. Temple made a season-high 30 free throws on 38 attempts and is one of the nation's top foul-shooting teams this month at 78.3 percent.

The Bearcats lead the all-time series with Temple 17-7, with a 7-1 mark in Cincinnati. They beat the Owls 84-53 at home last season, with Caupain, Gary Clark and Octavius Ellis - three of the four Cincinnati players averaging in double figures this season - totaling 33 points

Bearcats freshman Jacob Evans had 14 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots against Iowa State and was named the AAC Rookie of the Week on Monday.

                              • Preview: Tigers (1-10) at Bears (9-2)

                                Date: December 29, 2015 3:00 PM EDT

Baylor will search for a bit of consistency on offense in its final tune-up before Big 12 play, and it draws a promising matchup against one of the nation's worst defenses.

While the 23rd-ranked Bears seek their 34th straight home win over a nonconference team on Tuesday, visiting Texas Southern hopes for a repeat of last year's victory over another power conference team.

After five days off, Baylor (9-2) is left wondering which team will show up: the one that struggled to 35.6 percent shooting in an 80-61 loss at Texas A&M on Dec. 19 or the one that shot 47.7 percent in an 85-70 win over New Mexico State four days later.

Leading scorer Taurean Prince played a big part in the difference, matching a season low with eight points on 2-of-8 shooting in the former before making 13 of 19 for a career-high 34 points in the latter. Prince's previous high was 30 in a 69-67 win over Vanderbilt on Dec. 6, but he combined for 30 in the three games in-between.

Ishmail Wainright has become a contributor on the offensive end for the Bears, who open conference play Saturday at No. 2 Kansas. The junior guard set a career high with 12 points while making 4 of 5 3-pointers against Texas A&M and followed with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting against New Mexico State. Wainright averaged 1.6 points in his freshman and sophomore seasons and had scored in double digits just once previously this season.

"I am tired of TP yelling at me and smacking me in the head trying to get me to shoot the ball," Wainright told the team's official website. "I have turned down a lot of good shots lately, but it feels very good to score a little bit now. It feels really good."

Open shots should be easy to find against a miserable Texas Southern defense, which ranks in the bottom 10 percent of 346 Division I teams in points per game (81.2) and field-goal percentage (50.3).

The Tigers (1-10) haven't played a home game yet and will look for their first win on a seven-game road trip. They are 0-9 in road games and 1-1 at neutral sites, the lone win a 91-80 victory over UTSA in Las Vegas on Nov. 25.

Freshman Derrick Griffin made all nine of his shots for 20 points while pulling down nine rebounds and Jerron Martin hit six 3-pointers in Sunday's 80-67 loss at Syracuse. The Tigers hung around early but fell back 40-30 at halftime after an 18-8 Syracuse run.

'I know our record is 1-10, but we were 1-9 last year before we beat Michigan State,' coach Mike Davis said.

That 71-64 overtime victory last December over the 25th-ranked Spartans was Texas Southern's first over a ranked opponent since 1994.

Griffin was a top football recruit headed to Miami two years ago, but he failed to qualify academically and enrolled at Texas Southern after sitting out a year. The 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward has played in the last five games and is second on the team with 17.2 points per game and leads the Tigers with an average of 10.2 rebounds. He caught 11 touchdowns as a wide receiver on the football team this fall.

Baylor has won all eight matchups in this series, each in Waco, including a 75-49 victory last December. Rico Gathers led the way with 23 points and 13 rebounds.
