    • Red-Hot ATS Teams
      December 13, 2015

Through one month of the college basketball season, several teams have made plenty of money for backers. Some of those squads belong to major conferences, but others are flying under the radar as the oddsmakers have yet to catch up with these small schools. We’ll take a look at a handful of clubs that you should keep an eye moving forward that can profit from an against the spread standpoint.

      Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans (8-0 SU, 5-0 ATS)

UALR is one of two Sun Belt teams on this list, as the Trojans have pulled off three outright underdog victories at San Diego State, Tulsa, and DePaul this season. In seven of eight games, the Trojans have allowed 60 points or less, while owning an impressive 5-0 SU/ATS record away from Little Rock. UALR plays two more road games prior to Sun Belt play (at Central Arkansas on 12/16 and at Texas Tech on 12/22).

Central Florida Knights (5-3 SU, 7-0 ATS)

UCF began the season at 1-3, but has rebounded with four consecutive wins, capped off by Saturday’s 14-point victory over Florida Atlantic. The Knights managed covers in close underdog losses to Davidson, UC-Irvine, and Miami-Ohio as UCF lost those three games by a combined seven points. UCF has won and cashed in all four favorite opportunities as their next chance to be favored at home will come in their AAC opener against USF on January 6.

IPFW Mastodons (8-4 SU, 8-1 ATS)

Before breaking down IPFW (Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne), you should know that a Mastodon is a prehistoric elephant. This team out of the Summit League went 16-15 last season, but IPFW has posted a 5-1 ATS record as an underdog this season. The Mastodons covered in defeats to Valparaiso and Utah, while knocking off Cal Poly SLO and Miami-Ohio in the ‘dog role. IPFW is the hottest ATS team in the country since January, compiling an 18-3 ATS mark the last 21 games, including a 12-1 ATS ledger in this span as an underdog.

Kansas State Wildcats (7-2 SU, 5-0-1 ATS)

The college basketball spotlight in the Sunflower State will always shine on Kansas, but Kansas State is looking to make waves in the Big 12 this season. The Wildcats have won all five games at Bramlage Coliseum, although three of those victories came against teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. K-State begins a stretch of four consecutive home games following a 10-point loss at Texas A&M on Saturday, as the Wildcats will be favored in the first three contests (Colorado State, North Dakota, and St. Louis).

Monmouth Hawks (5-3 SU, 6-2 ATS)

This fun team out of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has already pulled off outright underdog victories over UCLA, Notre Dame, and USC. The Hawks split their first two conference games against Canisius and Niagara on the road, as they have put together a 3-2 ATS mark in true away contests. Monmouth will be tested on the highway over the next week with trips to Georgetown (12/15) and Rutgers (12/20), as the Hawks are 13-4 ATS in the underdog role since the start of last season.

Ohio Bobcats (5-3 SU, 6-1 ATS)

The Bobcats haven’t exactly played a difficult schedule, beating Tennessee State, Florida Gulf Coast, and Marshall at home. Regardless of the strength of schedule, Ohio has covered as double-digit underdogs against Tulsa and Florida State, but has yet to pick up a victory when receiving points. Ohio is 4-0 ATS in the favorite role, as the Bobcats won’t be playing in a lined contest until December 30 against Cal-Riverside, the final game before Mid-American Conference play.

South Dakota State Jackrabbits (9-1 SU, 7-0 ATS)

If you follow Summit League basketball, it’s not a big shock to see South Dakota State on this list. The Jackrabbits closed out last season with an 18-6 ATS record, stretching their mark against the number to 25-6 the past 31 trips to the court. SDSU has a pair of road victories over schools from major conferences (TCU and Minnesota), while winning three times as a home favorite. The Jackrabbits hit the road for three games, starting Tuesday in a winnable contest at Texas Tech.

      UT-Arlington Mavericks (8-2 SU, 8-1 ATS)

A mid-major school that has made plenty of noise through the first month resides in Arlington, Texas. The Mavericks have already pulled off road victories at Ohio State and Memphis as double-digit underdogs, while cashing in a close loss at Texas. UTA is a perfect 4-0 SU/ATS record in the favorite role, including recent home blowouts of North Texas and Bradley. The Mavericks begin Sun Belt play later this month by hosting Georgia State and Georgia Southern, as UTA went 1-3 SU and 0-4 ATS against those schools last season.

                • TUESDAY'S CBB PREVIEWS

Preview: Spartans (4-5) at Bearcats (8-2)
                  Date: December 15, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

A disheartening loss to its crosstown rival ended up having no effect on Cincinnati's spot in the Top 25.

The No. 23 Bearcats' next two games give them a much-needed chance to bounce back and tune up for their next big matchup.

The first of those comes Tuesday night against visiting Norfolk State in the teams' first meeting.

Cincinnati (8-2) fell behind then-No. 12 Xavier by 18 in the first half Saturday and went on to a 65-55 loss, its third straight in the series. The Bearcats shot 40.4 percent and were 7 of 26 from 3-point range, struggling against Xavier's 1-3-1 zone defense.

'In the first half, we were just lazy on the defensive end, getting back in transition,' said guard Troy Caupain, who had 10 points and six assists but went 3 of 10 from the field. 'They had a lot of transition baskets and were getting to the glass.'

Cincinnati scored the first 10 points after the break to cut the Musketeers' lead to six, but too much went wrong for the Bearcats, who committed 16 turnovers and forced only 10. Xavier shot 48.2 percent and 40.0 from beyond the arc.

"Ultimately, you're never going to beat a team that's going to be ranked in the top 10, you're not going to beat a team like that with 16 turnovers," coach Mick Cronin told the team's official website. "You're just not going to have any chance to win. So really, any other question about strategy is a moot point. And proof of that is their best player (Trevon Bluiett) scored three points and they win.

"They're in control of most of the game. That's because of our turnovers. We didn't give ourselves a chance."

Despite that defeat and a home loss to Butler on Dec. 2, Cincinnati remained in the poll Monday, maintaining its ranking from last week.

The Bearcats likely won't enjoy the same fate if they lose to Norfolk State (4-5) or VCU on Saturday. Cincinnati needs the two games to sharpen up, as a showdown with No. 5 Iowa State on Dec. 22 looms after these contests.

The Spartans are coming off an 81-60 loss at Northern Kentucky - just outside Cincinnati - on Sunday. Norfolk State allowed the Norse to shoot 57.4 percent from the field - 11 of 20 from 3-point range - while making 34.5 percent themselves.

Guard Jeff Short, averaging a team-high 17.2 points, was limited to 10 on 4-of-15 shooting. D'Shon Taylor went 0 for 4 and scored four points - 10 below his average - while Charles Oliver shot 2 of 9.

Norfolk State, which had won three in a row, has dropped five straight to ranked opponents and 13 in a row on the road against Top 25 teams since the start of the 2000-01 season.

The Spartans will be playing the third in a stretch of seven straight on the road. They don't play at home again until Jan. 5.

                  • Preview: Eagles (3-4) at Blue Devils (8-1)
                    Date: December 15, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Duke got some much-needed time off for exams after opening with nine games in 23 days that saw the team play in Durham, Chicago and New York.

The seventh-ranked Blue Devils have another trip to the Big Apple scheduled this week, but they first host another well-rested team in Georgia Southern on Tuesday night.

Duke (8-1) started with games on consecutive days at home as part of the 2K Classic before heading to Chicago and suffering a 74-63 loss to then-No. 2 Kentucky in the State Farm Champions Classic.

The 2K Classic then shifted to Madison Square Garden, where the Blue Devils beat VCU and Georgetown to win the title before returning home for four straight games prior to getting a break for exams.

'The early part of the season has given us an opportunity to put our team in some very tough situations,' coach Mike Krzyzewski said. 'Travel, tough opponents, exam period. ... So when we started, we hit the ground running.'

All that action caught up to Duke on Dec. 5 as it shot a season low-tying 40.7 percent, but it held Buffalo to 33.3 percent from the field in an 82-59 victory.

'We looked tired offensively in the first half. We were just chaotic,' Krzyzewski said. 'We looked tired ... and they worked themselves through it.'

Freshman Brandon Ingram had 23 points after scoring a season-best 24 in the previous win over Indiana in The ACC/Big Ten Challenge, and leading scorer Grayson Allen added 22.

'This was a long, extended stretch of quick turnarounds, of learning about one team and the next day having to learn about another group - always being locked in, mentally as well as physically,' senior forward Amile Jefferson said.

The opening stretch has appeared to taken a toll on Jefferson, who is out indefinitely with a right foot injury. He has started each game while averaging 11.4 points and a team-best 10.3 rebounds.

Georgia Southern (3-4) has been off even longer, last playing Dec. 2 when it lost 76-67 at Savannah State to end a two-game winning streak in which it averaged 94.0 points.

Mike Hughes hit a late 3-pointer and top scorer Tookie Brown made a pair of free throws with 51 seconds left to pull Georgia Southern within two, but Savannah State hit a 3-pointer with 25 seconds remaining to seal the win.

'I would've loved for our guys to have been able to pull this one out, but it was a tough environment, tough situation,' coach Mark Byington said. 'We're the youngest team in the country, and so it's hard to put these guys in this but when you put them in a situation like this, they're going to learn from it.'

The next environment is even tougher for the Eagles as Duke has won 122 consecutive nonconference home games by an average of 26.8 points since the start of the 2000-01 season.

The Blue Devils have won both meetings in this series, with the last coming in November 2008 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. That was Georgia Southern's last matchup with a Top 25 team, and the Eagles are 1-10 all-time against ranked squads with the win coming over Southern Illinois in 1976.

Following this game, Duke returns to MSG to face Utah on Saturday in the Ameritas Insurance Classic.

                    • Preview: Ragin Cajuns (3-4) at Bruins (7-3)
                      Date: December 15, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

UCLA's stunning season-opening loss at home to Monmouth is a distant memory now.

The No. 22 Bruins have used a four-game win streak to return to prominence as they host high-scoring Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday night.

UCLA (7-3) started in dismal fashion with an 84-81 overtime defeat to Monmouth on Nov. 13 for its second consecutive nonconference home loss after 21 straight wins.

The uneven start continued with losses to then-No. 5 Kansas and Wake Forest in the Maui Invitational, but Steve Alford's team made a statement with an 87-77 victory over then-No. 1 Kentucky on Dec. 3.

While that victory may be more impressive, the Bruins' 71-66 win at then-No. 20 Gonzaga on Saturday may have been more crucial to the team's psyche. The Bulldogs snapped UCLA's home nonconference win streak last season before eliminating the Bruins from the NCAA Tournament.

"It was very important," forward Tony Parker said. "They beat us twice last year, once in the Sweet 16, so it was a big win for our program, it was a big one for coach Alford."

Isaac Hamilton scored 20 points and Parker added 16 for the Bruins, who held the Bulldogs to 41.0 percent shooting. Hamilton made 8 of 15 shots for the second straight game after he scored 21 in an 83-76 win over Long Beach State on Dec. 6.

"Whenever you hit your first two shots, it kind of gives you an extra boost," Hamilton said. "And from then on, I just kept attacking, trying to create for my teammates and make sure we get the win. The more aggressive I am, the more plays I feel I can make and help this team get the victory."

The Bruins scheduled Louisiana-Lafayette (3-4) partly because the Ragin' Cajuns were picked to win the Sun Belt in the preseason by the league's coaches. Louisiana-Lafayette features power forward Shawn Long, the preseason conference player of the year whose 56 double-doubles since the start of 2012-13 are the most in the nation.

The Ragin' Cajuns are one of the highest scoring teams in Division I, averaging 90.0 points.

There is concern for them, however, since they are 0-4 on the road and have already dropped their conference opener. They have let four opponents shoot at least 50.0 percent, allowing Louisiana Tech to connect at 50.8 in a 91-79 loss Saturday.

Long was held to nine points, failing to score in double digits for the second time in his last 32 games. He grabbed 14 rebounds and is among the nation's leaders with 11.6 per game.

The Ragin' Cajuns blew a 10-point lead with 14:18 left.

Louisiana-Lafayette has struggled to defend the 3-point arc, allowing opponents to shoot 39.3 percent. That's a concern as the Ragin' Cajuns try to contain junior Bryce Alford, the coach's son who is known for his long-range proficiency but is shooting a career-worst 34.0 percent on 3-pointers.

                      • Gonzaga among 4 teams to drop from AP Top 25
                        December 14, 2015

Gonzaga is out of The Associated Press Top 25 men's basketball poll for the first time since February 2014, a run of 24 consecutive polls.

The Bulldogs, who lost to UCLA last week to drop to 6-3, were tied for the eighth-longest current streak. Duke has the longest current streak at 161 weeks, starting with the preseason poll of 2007-08. Kansas is the only other school with a streak in triple figures at 129.

                        ---

                        ALSO GONE

Three other schools - Vanderbilt, Oregon and Utah - also dropped out of the rankings this week.

Vanderbilt, which lost to Dayton last week, fell from 21st. The Commodores were ranked every week this season reaching as high as 16th.

Oregon, which lost to Boise State, was 24th and saw a four-week stretch of being ranked end.

Utah was No. 16 in the preseason poll and the first regular-season Top 25. The Utes dropped out for two weeks before returning at No. 25 last week, but they lost to Wichita State last week and fell out of the rankings.

                        ---

                        WELCOME ABOARD

Two of the four new teams in this week's poll - George Washington and UCLA - are ranked for the first time this season.

George Washington (9-1) moves in at No. 21, the Colonials' first poll appearance since 2005-06 when they were ranked all season, reaching as high as No. 6. Their only loss this season was to Cincinnati and they won three straight since.

UCLA (7-3) has won four straight games since returning from the Maui Invitational, including wins over then-No. 1 Kentucky and Gonzaga. The Bruins were ranked for one week last season.

Texas A&M and UConn, who were both ranked earlier in the season, moved in at Nos. 24 and 25.

                        ---

                        HIGH MARKS

Oklahoma, which beat then-No. 9 Villanova 78-55 at Pearl Harbor last week, is No. 3 for the first time since February 2009.

Xavier, coming off its intra-city win over Cincinnati, cracked the top 10 for the first since December 2011, when the Musketeers were No. 8.

                        ---

                        ON TOP

This is Michigan State's ninth week as the No. 1 team, breaking a tie with St. John's and West Virginia for 26th place all-time. Next on the list is Houston, which was No. 1 for 11 weeks. The last season the Cougars were No. 1 was 1982-83.

                        ---

                        CONFERENCE CALL

The Big 12 has five teams in this week's poll, as many as the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Big East has four ranked teams while the Big Ten has three. The Pac-12 and American Athletic Conference have two each.

George Washington is the first team from the Atlantic 10 to be ranked this season.

                        ---

                        UPS & DOWNS

Oklahoma had the week's biggest jump in the poll. The biggest drop was North Carolina's tumble from third to 11th after losing 84-82 at Texas.

                        ---

                        DOUBLE-RANKED

There are four games between ranked teams this week and they are all on Saturday: No. 22 UCLA faces No. 11 North Carolina in Brooklyn; No. 12 Villanova is at No. 8 Virginia; No. 17 Butler meets No. 9 Purdue in Indianapolis; No. 16 Baylor visits No. 24 Texas A&M.

                        ---

This story has been corrected to show that the Big 12 has five teams ranked, not six.

-- Alabama's strength coach makes $420K a year; only one head coach in the MAC makes more $$$ than that. Amazing.

-- Baseball won't re-instate Pete Rose, which is no big surprise; they can be in bed with Draft Kings, but they act high and mighty about gambling. Go figure.

-- CBS' referee analyst Mike Carey played college football at Santa Clara, where he was a teammate of former NFL quarterback Dan Pastorini.

-- On NFL Network Sunday night, Deion Sanders went out of his way twice to rip Kyle Shanahan, the Falcons' OC. "QBs start to play worse when he is around."

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Top 8, bottom 5 teams in NFL......

                          32) Ravens-- They move out of bottom five if Schaub comes back, but Clausen is just awful- he's started two games this year, with no touchdowns in 26-0/35-6 losses. 7 of nine Baltimore losses this season are by six or less points.

                          31) Falcons-- Lost seven of last eight games since a 5-0 start; they scored 36.8 ppg in first four games- they scored two TDs on last 29 drives and gave up almost 300 yards in first quarter at Carolina Sunday.

                          30) Titans-- They're 1-8 vs spread when they score less than 33 points; if you want to play a rookie QB, thats fine, he's going to be good, but how do you fire the coach if you know damn well you're going to struggle with a rookie QB playing?

                          29) Browns-- Their offseason will be fascinating; will they change coaches again- that would make six coaches in nine years in 2016? Will they keep Manziel? If they trade him, what do they get for him and then who plays QB? Interesting decisions loom.

                          28) Lions-- Good grief, I wish the Rams had Matthew Stafford; how can you be so bad with a QB like that? Detroit is 0-9 vs spread this year when they allow more than 16 points. Lions are on TV next Monday; think is my fourth time in row they've been on in primetime when I'm in Las Vegas, which I will be next week.

                          8) Vikings-- They move into a new domed stadium next year; Week 16 game with the Giants will be their last game in the Gophers' stadium. Need to win and right the ship this week by beating hard-to-figure Bears, who play lot of close games.

                          7) Bengals-- Giving them benefit of doubt in this spot, with Dalton hurt. McCarron makes first NFL start this week against 49ers, who play pretty good defense at home. If Bengals win one of remaining two AFC games, they clinch division, but can they get that valuable first round bye?

                          6) Chiefs-- On a freakin' roll with seven wins in row (6-0-1 vs spread); they're using WRs lot more this year, and had goal line stand at end of rainy win over Chargers last week. First team since '70 Bengals to win seven in row after losing five straight.

                          5) Packers-- Great fun to watch Rodgers play QB; never ceases to amaze me how he didn't get a college scholarship out of high school- he played a year of junior college ball in Boise. That said, Green Bay ran ball better in McCarthy's first game back as the playcaller for Green Bay.

                          4) Seahawks-- How great are the cameras they put in pylons? Give you great shots of close plays around the end zone. Whoever invented those deserves a raise. As for the Seahawks, they figure to be a very tough out in January, even if they're on the road.

                          3) Patriots-- Why does NFL make referees run to the stands and look at the replays himself? Why not have people in New York who look at these things and then decide what the right call is? Wouldn't this be a better, faster system? Was thinking other day whether or not Tom Brady will go on TV when he's done playing? Would be he good at it? You never know which ex-players will emerge as TV stars.

                          2) Cardinals-- Now-or-never for Arizona; they're going to win NFC West, have to win maybe one road game to get to Super Bowl. Carson Palmer's 36th birthday is in a couple weeks- this is their best shot to win a championship.

                          1) Panthers-- If Arizona has to win NFC title game on road, it'll be in Charlotte with the Panthers hosting. Carolina beat the Redbirds in the playoffs LY, but #3 QB Ryan Lindley was playing for Arizona and it was a lousy game. Palmer vs Newton for the NFC championship would be a tremendous game.
