      • Preview: Explorers (4-3) at Wildcats (7-1)
        Date: December 13, 2015 5:00 PM EDT

After a rough outing thousands of miles away from home, Villanova returns to a far more familiar and comfortable surrounding.

The ninth-ranked Wildcats vie to bounce back from a lopsided loss and maintain their recent Big 5 dominance when they host La Salle on Sunday night.

Villanova (7-1) wasn't up to the challenge in its first big test of this young season, struggling on both ends in a 78-55 drubbing from No. 7 Oklahoma in Monday's Pearl Harbor Invitational in Hawaii. The Wildcats were a dreadful 4 of 32 from 3-point range and shot 31.7 percent overall while failing to slow down the Sooners' potent offense.

Oklahoma opened on a 15-3 run and kept the Wildcats at bay behind a 14-of-27 performance from beyond the arc.

'We have not started well any game this season and to do it against a team like that and to try to come from behind against a team like that, you're going to be in trouble and that's what happened,' Villanova coach Jay Wright said.

One of the nation's best teams from the perimeter last season, the Wildcats have made a Big East-worst 28.6 percent of their 3-pointers thus far. The offseason losses of current Detroit Piston Darrun Hilliard and Dylan Ennis have proven difficult to overcome, particularly with Josh Hart having trouble finding consistency in his new role as the go-to scorer.

Hart, the 2014-15 Big East sixth man of the year, is 4 for 23 from 3 in four games since a career-high 27-point effort against Akron on Nov. 22. The junior shot 46.4 percent on 3-pointers last season.

Additionally, forward Kris Jenkins is 6 for 30 from beyond the arc in the last four games.

The Wildcats were clicking offensively in an 86-72 victory at St. Joseph's on Dec. 1 that extended their Big 5 winning streak to 11 games. Their last loss to a Philadelphia-based school was a 76-61 defeat to Temple on Dec. 5, 2012, 10 days after being dealt a 77-74 overtime loss to a La Salle team that reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 that season.

The Explorers (4-3) are just 36-35 since that remarkable run, however, and enter The Pavilion off home losses to Hofstra and previously winless Drexel.

"I don't think in my lifetime I have done a worse job in coaching," coach Dr. John Giannini said after the Explorers' 66-53 loss to Drexel last Saturday. "I don't think we are where we should be as individuals or as a team, and that's completely on me."

La Salle does possess one of the nation's top scorers in Jordan Price (25.9 points per game), though the Auburn transfer was held to 5-of-14 shooting by Drexel after amassing a career-high 37 points against Hofstra.

Villanova also held Price in check in last season's matchup with La Salle, limiting him to 10 points on 2-of-8 shooting in an 84-70 victory for its 12th win in the series' past 13 games.

The Explorers have lost five straight at The Pavilion since a 61-58 overtime win Nov. 27, 2001. Villanova has won 30 in a row overall at its on-campus arena.

La Salle lost 80-64 at Penn on Nov. 25 in its Big 5 opener. The Explorers were 2-2 in the intracity series last season.

        • Preview: Warhawks (4-3) at Mountainers (7-1)
          Date: December 13, 2015 5:00 PM EDT

Listen to Bob Huggins talk for five minutes and you'd swear he was coaching a team that had played one good half all season instead of one very bad one.

But the rotten one was also the most recent, and that had Huggins huffing after 14th-ranked West Virginia's first loss and almost certainly in the days leading up to Sunday's bounce-back opportunity against Louisiana-Monroe.

The Mountaineers (7-1) outscored their first seven opponents by an average of 30.8 points, and their first test against a ranked opponent was going just fine through 20 minutes. But after cutting through No. 10 Virginia's defense and holding a 36-30 halftime lead, West Virginia was badly outplayed on both ends after the break in a 70-54 loss.

Taking any solace in that first-half performance, Bob?

"Do I look happy?" he asked grimly. "Do I look happy? I'm not happy. I'm not happy about anything."

What irked Huggins the most was his team's defensive effort. The Cavaliers shot 62.8 percent for the game and 73.7 percent in the second half, dismantling a Mountaineers team that had held its first six opponents to 36.6 percent from the field.

"We were awful. I don't remember ever a team giving up that many layups in the halfcourt," Huggins said. "Our halfcourt defense is supposed to be pretty good."

West Virginia shot 6 for 20 after halftime and its starting backcourt of Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles Jr. was a combined 2 for 17 overall, all of which left Huggins sarcastically considering a new offensive system.

"I can't imagine we're as bad as we are," he said. "If we're going to shoot it that bad we shouldn't shoot it. I watch them every day. I know we take bad shots, out of rhythm, off balance. We don't do a very good job of stepping into shots."

That's especially true from beyond the arc, where the Mountaineers are connecting on just 27 percent to rank among the bottom 20 teams in the nation. West Virginia averages just 4.6 made 3s and has totaled 12 on 51 attempts in its past four contests.

Turnovers have also become a problem for a team that prides itself on forcing them. Huggins' team has 35 in its last two games and his press only forced one more (19) than his team committed against the Cavaliers.

"We've got to go back and start from the beginning and you can't progress when you are going over the elementary things you have to do in order to advance," he told the Mountaineers' official website.

Louisiana-Monroe (4-4) isn't a team that's going to exploit West Virginia from deep - it makes 4.1 3s per game and shoots 28.9 percent - and the Warhawks should be fighting fatigue as well. They'll be playing their third game in four days after falling 73-62 at Kent State on Thursday and 54-50 at Penn State on Saturday.

Coach Keith Richard took the opposite approach to Huggins' sharp critiques after his team turned it over 18 times against the Nittany Lions, declining to comment.

Louisiana-Monroe has played both games on this trip without its best player, 6-foot-10 forward Majok Deng. The Australian, responsible for nearly 27 percent of the offense with 18.3 points per game, sustained a leg injury earlier in the week and is out indefinitely.

The Mountaineers were also ranked 14th the last time these teams met and won 88-69 at Morgantown in 2005.

          • Preview: Tigers (5-3) at Wildcats (8-1)
            Date: December 13, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

Arizona coach Sean Miller is hoping that Allonzo Trier can follow in the footsteps of some of his other former stars and experience a breakthrough after his latest performance.

The freshman will try for another high-scoring game when the 13th-ranked Wildcats continue their homestand Sunday against Missouri.

Trier had 27 points on 8-of-11 shooting and six rebounds in an 85-72 win over Fresno State on Wednesday. The swingman, who matched his scoring output from his prior two games, looks like he's building toward becoming a more consistent performer since tallying five points in back-to-back contests last month in a California tournament.

Miller is now banking on his highly touted recruit turning into a reliable threat like Derrick Williams, Aaron Gordon and Stanley Johnson before him.

"Eventually, you come to it with all these guys," Miller said. "As you learn who they are, a trust starts to develop. And once we see they are really working hard to do what we ask of them, it's just a matter of time."

Trier will get a familiar place to keep honing his game with Arizona (8-1) getting four more chances to play in Tucson before its Pac-12 opener Jan. 3 at Arizona State.

"I felt like coach had a lot of confidence in me," Trier said. "Anytime somebody tells you that you can go out there and be yourself, do what you do best, it feels good. It allows you to be comfortable."

Arizona will try to extend its NCAA-best home win streak to 44 games when it faces a program that's dropped 16 straight on the road dating back to February 2014. Missouri is 0-3 away from home with two neutral-site losses to Kansas State and Northwestern State last month.

The Tigers (5-3) have won three straight since then after beating Nebraska-Omaha 85-78 on Wednesday. Freshman forward Kevin Puryear, averaging a team-best 14.1 points on 54.7 percent shooting, had 18 against the Mavericks and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds.

Missouri's other top scorer is also a freshman, point guard Terrence Phillips (10.0 ppg). He had 14 points Wednesday and a combined 27 in the past two games.

"We're feeling good. We're playing with confidence after losing three straight," Phillips said. "We've got to continue this confidence, continue playing together and playing hard as we go to Arizona."

The Wildcats didn't have their leading scorer, Ryan Anderson, for last season's matchup against the Tigers in the Maui Invitational because he was sitting out following a transfer from Boston College.

The No. 3-ranked team won 72-53 while holding Missouri to 36.4 percent shooting and a 3-of-13 performance from 3-point range. Arizona was en route to a 34-win campaign - one shy of matching its school mark - and a second straight regional finals appearance in the NCAA tournament.

The Tigers, meanwhile, were on their way to a nine-win season under first-year coach Kim Anderson, their worst since going 3-23 in 1966-67. The schools split their previous two meetings with Arizona winning in the 1994 NCAA regional finals.

Missouri has lost its last eight games against Top 25 teams by an average of 19.5 points, with five of those matchups coming last season. The Tigers have also dropped 14 of their last 15 road contests versus ranked teams.

              December 13, 2015

EAST LANSING, MICH. (AP) Denzel Valentine scored 17 points and No. 1 Michigan State moved within one victory of matching the program's best start, beating Florida 58-52 on Saturday night to improve to 11-0.

Only the 2000-01 Spartans had a better start, winning their first 12 games.

Dorian Finney-Smith and Kasey Hill each scored 13 points for the Gators (6-3). Bryn Forbes scored 12 points for Michigan State.

              No. 2 KANSAS 82, OREGON STATE 67

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Wayne Selden scored 22 points, Frank Mason had 18 and Kansas used a big second half to beat Oregon State in its annual trip to the Sprint Center.

Kansas (8-1) trailed by as many as 14 in the first half. Coach Bill Self got so mad that he slammed his right fist into his left hand, sending his pricey wristwatch flying off.

Tres Tinkle hit five 3-pointers and scored 20 points for Oregon State (6-2).

              TEXAS 84, No. 3 NORTH CAROLINA 82

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Javan Felix swished a short jumper as time expired, lifting Texas over North Carolina and giving new coach Shaka Smart his biggest victory with the Longhorns.

Felix was left unguarded as players from both teams watched Isaiah Taylor's 3-point try bounce off the rim. The ball dropped straight to Felix, who put it in. After a few minutes of looking at replay video, the game officials ruled the basket good.

Felix finished with 25 points for Texas (6-3) and made five 3-pointers. Marcus Paige scored 20 to lead the Tar Heels (7-2), who started the season No. 1.

              No. 5 KENTUCKY 72, ARIZONA STATE 58

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Jamal Murray scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half, helping Kentucky pull away from Arizona State.

Leading 32-31 at halftime, the Wildcats (9-1) regrouped to play more crisply and aggressively after the break.

Marcus Lee added 14 points and seven rebounds for Kentucky.

Tra Holder had 15 points and Kodi Justice added 12 for Arizona State (6-3).

              No. 6 MARYLAND 77, UMES 56

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Melo Trimble scored 18 points and No. 6 Maryland found its shooting form in the second half.

After struggling to take a 35-29 halftime lead, the Terrapins (9-1) made their first eight shots from the field after intermission during a 27-11 run that made it 62-40. Trimble contributed three 3-pointers to the surge.

Maryland didn't miss a field goal try in the second half until Michal Cekovsky botched a layup with 8:45 remaining.

It was 69-46 with 5:35 left, and the Terps coasted from there. Maryland shot 63 percent in the second half and finished 21 for 25 from the free throw line.

Dominique Elliott led UMES (1-9) with 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting.

              No. 7 OKLAHOMA 96, ORAL ROBERTS 73

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - Buddy Hield had 30 points and a career-high five steals to lead Oklahoma.

Hield was 9 of 15 from the field to fall one point short of his career high.

Jordan Woodard scored 19 points, Isaiah Cousins had 15 and Ryan Spangler added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Sooners (7-0), who won by at least 17 points for the sixth straight game. Oklahoma shot 62 percent in the second half to beat Oral Roberts for the 15th consecutive time.

Obi Emegano scored 29 points, Kris Martin had a season-high 15 points and Brandon Conley added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Oral Roberts (8-3).

              No. 11 PURDUE 95, YOUNGSTOWN ST. 64

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Freshman Caleb Swanigan and senior A.J. Hammons both scored 15 points to lead four Purdue players in double figures.

Hammons added 11 rebounds. Rapheal Davis and Isaac Haas both scored 13 points for Purdue (11-0), which had a 54-point second half.

Matt Donlan had 19 points to lead Youngstown State (4-6).

The Boilermakers have won every game by at least 12 points, pulling away from Youngstown State during the second half.

              No. 12 XAVIER 65, NO. 23 CINCINNATI 55

CINCINNATI (AP) - Myles Davis scored a season-high 17 points and Xavier ran out to an 18-point lead and beat its crosstown rival for the third straight time.

The Musketeers (10-0) matched the best start in school history and extended their domination over Cincinnati (8-2), winning the annual game for the seventh time in nine years.

              No. 15 PROVIDENCE 74, BRYANT 67

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Drew Edwards scored a career-high 17 points, including five 3-pointers, and usual starter Ben Bentil came off the bench to get 16 points and eight rebounds as Providence won without preseason All-America Kris Dunn.

Bentil didn't start against Bryant after spraining his left ankle Wednesday night against Boston College. Dunn had a stomach virus and sat on the bench but did not play.

Dan Garvin had 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting for Bryant (2-9), which has lost eight straight.

Jalen Lindsey added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Friars (10-1), who have won four straight, while Rodney Bullock had 13 points and 14 rebounds.

              No. 18 BUTLER 94, TENNESSEE 86

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Reserve Kelan Martin had 25 points and 11 rebounds for Butler.

Martin scored all of Butler's points during a 13-4 run in the second half that kept Tennessee at a distance and sealed the win for the Bulldogs (8-1).

The Volunteers (4-4) started the game shooting 60 percent from the field and led by as many as 10 points with 9 minutes remaining in the first half. But the Bulldogs chipped away at the lead, then an 11-2 run put them ahead.

Despite scoring 94 points, the Bulldogs endured a rough start on offense, missing their first eight shots from the field on their first four possessions. Kellen Dunham took the brunt of those struggles, going scoreless for the first 12 minutes of the game on 0-for-5 shooting from the field. Dunham, Butler's leading scorer, finished with 12 points.

Tennessee's Kevin Punter scored 17 of his 27 points in the first half.

              UCLA 71, No. 20 GONZAGA 66

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Isaac Hamilton scored 20 points, Tony Parker added 16 and UCLA beat Gonzaga.

Down 48-47 midway through the second half, the Bruins (7-3) scored nine straight points to take the lead for good.

Kyle Wiltjer led Gonzaga (6-3) with 20 points.

              No. 22 LOUISVILLE 86, E. MICHIGAN 53

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Damion Lee scored 16 points, all in the second half, and Louisville shot 53 percent from the field.

Louisville (7-1) torched another opponent in shooting better than 50 percent for the seventh time in eight games this season. The Cardinals entered the game leading the country in scoring margin at more than 30 points a game.

Quentin Snider scored 13 points, Chinanu Onuaku had 12 and Ray Spalding and Trey Lewis added 11 each for Louisville. The Cardinals had 20 assists on 31 field goals.

Raven Lee led Eastern Michigan (6-4) with 19 points. Freshman James Thompson IV had 12 points and 13 rebounds to earn his sixth straight double-double. Eastern Michigan shot 30 percent (19 of 64) from the field.

              BOISE STATE 74, No. 24 OREGON 72

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Anthony Drmic scored 19 points and Boise State overcame a double-digit deficit in the first half.

James Webb III had 12 points and Mikey Thompson added 11 as the Broncos (7-4) beat the Ducks for the first time in six tries. It was also Boise State's first home win against a ranked opponent since topping No. 21 Utah State on Feb. 14, 2009.

Dillon Brooks scored 26 points for Oregon (7-2).

              WICHITA ST. 67, No. 25 UTAH 50

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Zach Brown scored 14 points to lead a balanced Wichita State offense.

Markis McDuffie had 13 points and Fred VanVleet added 10 for Wichita State (5-4). Six Shockers made a 3-pointer as they went 10 of 25 from beyond the arc.

Jacob Poeltl had 11 points for Utah (7-2), which had 19 turnovers and only 14 field goals.

Wichita State's decisive stretch was keyed by McDuffie, a freshman reserve. He converted a four-point play and hit another 3.

The Shockers stretched the lead to as many as 20 points in the final minute.

                  **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

                  13) Bucks 108, Warriors 95-- Golden State's 28-game win streak comes to an end; I'm wondering if anyone in Oakland is relieved the streak is over, so they can get on with the business of the regular season- the bandwagon will empty, lot of the media will be gone, and they can properly rest guys who are banged-up.

                  12) Our world is too impatient: Penguins fired coach Mike Johnston, even though the team has a 15-10-3 record. 15-10-3 ain't bad. Apparently the owners think things should be better, but its not even Christmas yet. We'll see how this turns out.

                  11) Chattanooga 61, Dayton 59-- Biggest basketball upset of the day; Flyers won at Vanderbilt earlier this week, now lose at home to a Southern Conference team. UTC has a new coach this year; the previous coach replaced Shaka Smart at VCU.

                  10) Texas 84, North Carolina 82-- Speaking of Shaka Smart, he got the biggest win of his brief Texas tenure when his Longhorns upset UNC on a late baseline jumper that just barely beat the buzzer. Tar Heels are now 0-2 in true road games.

                  9) I know the show is 90:00 because they can sell ads to fill 90:00 of TV, but why in God's name does ESPN waste 90:00 of airtime for a Heisman Trophy show? All that matter is the thirty seconds at the end the winner is announced- how can people watch the rest of it? What is said that already hasn't been said?

                  8) When Iowa State rallied back from 20 down to beat Iowa Thursday, kids stormed the court in celebration, during which a sports columnist was knocked down and he broke his leg. Few years ago, a high school star in Arizona was paralyzed when he was trampled in a similar court storming- the kid had a scholarship at Stanford waiting for him, but he can't walk anymore. Pretty soon court storming will be banned.

                  7) Xavier 65, Cincinnati 55-- Musketeers have now won six of last seven games in an intense inner-city rivalry- they're probably the best team in the Big East. .

                  6) Xavier-Cincinnati is so intense that it was moved off campus for a couple years to a neutral downtown arena, after a big brawl. When you see the refs assigned to a game like this, it is a big compliment to them. The three refs at Xavier last night were Jeffrey Anderson, Brent Hampton, Roger Ayers- they must be very good officials.

                  5) UCLA 71, Gonzaga 66-- Zags lost at home to Arizona/UCLA in last eight days; at what point do we call them a fraud, or is Karnowski's back injury the missing link to the Zags being a really good team? Gonzaga gets an awful lot of publicity, but other than taking the WCC every year, what exactly do they win?

                  4) Kansas 82, Oregon State 67-- Jayhawks were down 11 at half, outscored OSU 54-28 in second half. Beavers' coach Wayne Tinkle's son plays for OSU-- he shoots a lot of 3-pointers, he wears uniform number 3, his first name is Tres. Now that makes sense; the kid hit his first five 3's in this game, but made only one other basket.

                  3) Michael Cuddyer retired after 15 years in the big leagues; good to wrap up your career by playing in a World Series for the first time. Cuddyer banked just over $79M in his 13-year career- he would have made another $12.5M if he played next year. .

                  2) Marquette 57, Wisconsin 55-- Badgers have lost three home games already.

                  1) Carolina Panthers are 12-0, rolling along towards an undefeated season, but coach Ron Rivera's mom Delores thinks the Panthers should blitz more. Seriously, she knows a lot about football and thinks her son's defense doesn't blitz enough. Oy.

                              6) Steelers +2.5 (377)-- Bengals clinch division with a win here- W. .

                              5) Bills -1 (386)-- LeSean McCoy returns to Philly; interesting game- L.

                              4) Giants -1 (447)-- Big Blue has lost four games in last minute when they led.

                              3) Lions even (517)-- Detroit had extra prep time after LW's Thursday game- L.

                              2) Patriots -3 (532)-- People don't think NE will lose three in a row- W.

                              1) Seahawks -6.5 (962)-- Spread doubled after Clausen named starter- W.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday......

                              14) Steelers 33, Bengals 20-- This is how fragile success is in the NFL; Andy Dalton broke his right (passing) thumb, is out for the year- he might get back for the playoffs, but how long are the Bengals going to last in playoffs without him? This probably will cost them a first round bye, at least.

Wonder what the jackasses who booed Dalton at the celebrity softball game in Cincy last summer are saying now?

                              13) Eagles 23, Bills 20-- When LeSean McCoy was in Philly, he lived in a condo that didn't allow Christmas decorations on the doors that led to the hallway; McCoy's mom put them up anyway, no one said anything, so other people put them up. McCoy had 74 yards on 20 rushes in his return to Philly, but Bills had 15 penalties for 101 yards, Eagles five for 55. Third loss in four games for Rex Ryan's fading team.

                              12) Panthers 38, Falcons 0-- While network TV nitwits insist on putting Dallas on national TV most every week, Carolina is 13-0 and steamrolling towards going 16-0. This was a major tank job by freefalling Falcons, who gave up almost 300 yards in the first quarter. Atlanta has a big decision regarding Matt Ryan this winter- do they plan to go ahead with him as their franchise QB and if so, why?

                              11) Browns 24, 49ers 10-- Manziel was 21-31, 270 passing as Cleveland ended skid at seven games. Johnny Football has certainly improved this year, but are Browns using him to get ready for 2016, or to showcase him for a trade? Total yardage in this game was 481-221, Browns ran for 230, winning easily despite a -2 turnover ratio.

                              10) Redskins 24, Bears 21-- Condolences to Jay Cutler, whose brother-in-law was found dead in Utah this week, at age 30. Nine of last ten Chicago games were won by six or less points- Chicago lost three of its last four. Jay Gruden was head coach in Arena League for nine years, UFL for one; he is actually one of more experienced head coaches in NFL. Washington/Philly are tied atop NFC East at 6-7.

                              9) Rams 21, Lions 14-- At one point in this game, Rams had 3rd-and-3, Keenum took a quick drop, threw a 5-yard pass to Britt and the play gained seven yards and a first down- I jumped out of my chair and shook my fist-- they NEVER get first downs that easily, and I'm not being sarcastic. Actual progress. Aaron Donald is a beast at tackle and Hekker/Gurley also had big games, as St Louis ended a 5-game skid.

                              8) Chiefs 10, Chargers 3-- Gil Brandt pointed out that Chiefs are the second team in NFL history ('70 Bengals) to win seven consecutive games following a losing streak of five games- this was first of the seven they didn't cover. San Diego isn't a good team, but they've covered their last four road games. .

                              7) Saints 24, Buccaneers 17-- Damaging loss to Bucs' playoff hopes, as Saints win fourth visit in row to Bay Area, endng their 4-game skid. This turned out to be a good week for teams on long losing streaks (Saints-Browns-Rams). Saints converted on 12 of 17 third down plays, helping New Orleans to 9-yard edge in field position.

                              6) Jaguars 51, Colts 16-- Indy led this game 13-3 at 2:00 warning of first half, gave up a defensive TD before halftime, then two more TDs in first 3:11 of third quarter. Jags outscored Indy 42-3 in second half; at 5-8, they're not out of AFC South race just yet, with Texans losing badly Sunday night. As for Colts, who lost 45-10 last week, it is time to start speculating on who their next coach will be.

                              5) Jets 30, Titans 8-- My cousin texted me around 2:15: "....Titans stopped playing".

Jets are now +15 in turnovers in their eight wins, -13 in five losses. Jets ran for 183 yards, had 12-yard edge in field position. Only Tennessee TD was pass to Mariota. Jets-Steelers-Chiefs are tied for two AFC Wild Cards; Gang Green ends up with road games at Dallas/Buffalo and a home game with New England.

                              4) Raiders 15, Broncos 12-- NFL teams are now 1-25 when they don't score a TD on offense, the one win being the first Raider-Bronco game, so Denver didn't score a TD on offense in two games vs Oakland this year. Red zone failures in first half (three FGs on three red zone drives), dropped passes on big plays in second half doomed Denver here. The big question in Denver is going to be whether or not Osweiler keeps his job at QB, if and when Peyton Manning deems himself ready to play.

Jack Del Rio almost broke Twitter when he went for two with a 15-12 lead; turns out the Oakland long snapper hurt his shoulder, so they went for two instead of risking a fouled-up snap on a PAT with a backup snapper.

                              3) Seahawks 35, Ravens 6-- Former Viking coaxh Bud Grant liked to say "Its not who you play, its when you play them". Seattle played Chicago in only game Jimmy Clausen started for Bears; here they played Ravens in only game Clausen has started for them. The results? 26-0/35-6 wins. Clausen might be the worst QB in the NFL. Seattle looks like the #5 seed in the NFC, which will make them a hefty road favorite at the NFC East champ on Wild Card weekend.

                              2) Packers 28, Cowboys 7-- Dallas is now 1-8 with backup QBs starting; when NFL only has two 4:00 games and Cassel-led Cowboys are in one of them, its just terrible scheduling. Put the undefeated Panthers in the national spotlight more often, they've earned it. Biggest news here is that Mike McCarthy took play-calling duties back for Green Bay, who end season with Raiders-Cardinals-Vikings.

                              1) Patriots 27, Texans 6-- This game had all the suspense of a Harlem Globetrotters-Washington Generals tilt. NE is back as #1 seed in AFC, with Broncos/Bengals losing. Houston plays at Indy next week; in what could be a QB matchuip between Charlie Whitehurst-TJ Yates, with a division title on the line. Can the Rams get moved to this division? They're as good as any of those four teams.

Top 25 roundup: No. 4 Iowa State rolls

Jameel McKay had 17 points and eight rebounds, and No. 4 Iowa State used a strong shooting effort to beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 78-64 Sunday at Ames, Iowa.

Matt Thomas also scored 17 points for the Cyclones (9-0). Monte Morris added 12 points and 11 assists a Iowa State made 12 3-point shots and finished with a 48.1 shooting percentage.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff didn't go away until late in the second half behind its own hot shooting. The Golden Lions (2-8) shot 45.8 percent and had JoVaughn Love and Ghiavonni Robinson lead the team with 13 points each.

                                No. 9 Villanova 78, La Salle 55

The Wildcats were lights-out from the floor, especially in the second half, to run away with a victory over the Explorers.

Up 15 at halftime, Villanova made nine of its first 10 shots of the second half to open up a 30-point advantage on its city rivals before the period's midway point.

Josh Hart (18 points), Ryan Arcidiacono (14 points, seven assists), and Jalen Brunson (13 points) led the way for the Wildcats (8-1). Jordan Price scored a team-high 16 points for La Salle (4-4).

                                No. 14 West Virginia 100, Louisiana-Monroe 58

Jevon Carter, benched during the final 13 minutes of a Tuesday loss to No. 10 Virginia, returned to score 19 first-half points and 21 overall, fueling the Mountaineers in a blowout of the Warhawks.

West Virginia (8-1) made a season-high 15 3-pointers. Devin Williams finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Daxter Miles Jr. scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half.

Louisiana-Monroe (4-5) got a career-best 19 points from Jamaal Samuel. The Warhawks were hurt by 21 turnovers.

                                No. 13 Arizona 88, Missouri 52

Mark Tollefsen scored 17 points guard Gabe York had 16 to lead a balanced offensive effort as 13th-ranked Arizona started fast and never let up in routing Missouri in Tucson, Ariz.

Missouri was led in scoring by Namon Wright, who had nine points. Wes Clark and forward Jakeenan Gant each had eight.

Arizona played its fifth game without starting senior Kaleb Tarczewski, expected to be out until at least the start of conference season -- Jan. 3 at Arizona State -- because of an ankle injury. The Wildcats were also without Elliott Pitts for the second consecutive game.
