    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

    Conference championship games this weekend..........

-- MAC-- Bowling Green (-11.5) vs Northern Illinois

-- C-USA-- Western Kentucky (-7) vs Southern Mississippi

-- AAC-- Houston (-6) vs Temple

    -- Pac-12-- Stanford (-4.5) vs USC

-- SEC-- Alabama (-17.5) vs Florida

-- MW-- San Diego State (-3.5) vs Air Force

-- ACC-- Clemson (-5.5) vs North Carolina

-- Big 14-- Michigan State (-3.5) vs Iowa

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

    13) First of all, our thoughts and prayers go out to the people in San Bernadino after yesterday's killings at a county office complex. It is just very sad; I'm not going to go on a rant here about guns or anything, but stuff like this needs to stop.

    12) It is interesting how CNN brings in experts in to talk about these situations as cameras from helicopters show police activity. Former CIA people, police offficers, military experts- they all speculate on a fluid situation-- live TV is very interesting.

    On to more pleasant subjects........
    11) There is an interesting article in ESPN the Magazine on agent Jimmy Sexton, who is one of the major power brokers in college football- he represents fifty college coaches, and NFL players like Philip Rivers and Julio Jones.

Put it this way: last week, Alabama-Auburn, Florida-Florida State, USC-UCLA all played rivalry games. Sexton represents the head coach from all six of those schools.

    10) David Price got $31M a year from the Red Sox; he's a damn good pitcher, but his 0-7, 5.27 career postseason record has to raise eyebrows. He is also 30 years old, so he will be 37 when his contract runs out. Lot of $$$ to commit to one player.

Price is 104-56, 3.09 in 213 career regular season starts; he was 18-5, 2.45 in 2015.

    9) Miami Marlins are really going to hire Barry Bonds as a hitting coach? Does that mean he has to talk to the media? Don Mattingly as a manager, Bonds as hitting coach would put a lot of hitting expertise in Miami's dugout.

Mark McGwire is going to be the Padres' bench coach; interesting times we live in.

    8) Mark Richt is the new football coach at Miami, his alma mater, where he backed up Jim Kelly in the early 80's. Richt is highly regarded as a person, averaged 9.6 wins a year at Georgia. I am very, very curious what Michael Irvin says about this hire.

    7) Interesting development: Ivy League is considering having a postseason hoop tournament, starting in 2016-17. Guess they've finally seen the light that getting the whole league together for a weekend would be a money maker, plus it would give the league's basketball programs some national publicity. Right now, Ivy League is the only Division I league that doesn't have a postseason tournament.

    6) 76ers suspended Jahlil Okafor for two games; they can't do anything right. This is why teams do exhaustive research on draft prospects and still, problems pop up and screw things up. I mean, the season is five weeks old and he's already had incidents involving the police three times. No bueno.

Meanwhile, Knicks rookie Kristaps Porzingis says the 76ers never worked him out before the draft. Seriously? The NBA should make these idiots sell the team, or hire a new GM, at the least. The guy running things now is an imbecile.

    5) San Diego State-San Diego are playing basketball outdoors at Petco Park Sunday, just before the Chargers play Denver at Qualcomm. Interesting concept; Toreros have a new coach, Aztecs are offensively challenged. Big sports day in San Diego.

    4) ESPN's Dan Dakich last night said that he's always thought Rick Pitino is the best coach in the country at player development. Interesting comment coming from a guy who both played and coached at Indiana.

    3) Basketball scheduling note: Duke doesn't play a true road game until their ACC slate starts January 2 at Boston College. Until then, Blue Devils play nine home tilts, only one of which (vs Indiana, ACC-Big 14 challenge) is against a team in top 100.

They're also playing four neutral court games, all in New York City, all against top 50 opponents, all on national TV. Interesting how different teams schedule.

    2) Central Florida signed Oregon OC Scott Frost as its new coach; UCF is a really big school, a sleeping giant athletically. Frost played at both Nebraska/Stanford, then played in NFL for six years with four different teams.

    1) Michigan State 71, Louisville 67-- Funny how the new rule, really going back to an old rule, how coaches can't call timeouts while the clock is running, has created a few problems early on-- players haven't adjusted to calling timeouts yet.

Wisconsin 66, Syracuse 58, OT-- Jim Calhoun is worth listening to on TV; he talks lot slower than he did when he was coaching, he obviously knows a ton and gives out good basic basketball knowledge.

I have to look this up; teams that win these Thanksgiving tournaments at fun places tend to let down in their first game back on campus. Something I sense, have to find out for sure. There are peaks and valleys to every season.

Butler 78, Cincinnati 76-- You have to be damn good to score 78 on Cincy.

Preview: Bears (1-5) at Sooners (4-0)
            Date: December 03, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

Oklahoma has one of the nation's top players in Buddy Hield, but his supporting cast is hardly devoid of talent.

The All-American looks to rebound from his first poor outing, and the sixth-ranked Sooners should also be able to showcase some others Thursday night against a Central Arkansas squad that hasn't won a road game in almost two years.

Hield averaged 25.3 points and 56.8 percent from the field while going 11 of 19 from 3-point range in the first three games. He struggled Sunday, going 5 of 16 from the floor, missing both 3s and scoring 12 points in a 65-48 win over Wisconsin.

That didn't prove to be much of a problem with fellow senior Ryan Spangler recording 20 points and 14 rebounds, Isaiah Cousins scoring 14 and the Sooners (4-0) putting forth another strong defensive effort, holding the rebuilding Badgers to 23.5 percent shooting.

'It's a game we'll grow from,' coach Lon Kruger said. 'We know Buddy is going to bounce back, at least most of the nights. I know he feels good about other guys stepping up there when they do, too. That's the way he thinks about it.'

Spangler averages 13 points and a team-high 10 boards while Cousins is scoring 12.5 per contest and shooting 45.5 percent. Both are in their third seasons as full-time starters and capable of picking up the slack when Hield has an off-night.

Fellow starter Jordan Woodard is averaging 9.5 points and five other Sooners are scoring at least 3.0 per contest.

"It's huge anytime you can have different weapons on the floor," Kruger said.

It's defense, though, that remains the Sooners' calling card.

They lead the nation in defensive field-goal percentage at 31.5, are in the top 10 against the 3-pointer at 23.2 percent and have held their last three opponents to an average of 55.7 points.

"Our talk on the court and positioning continues to get better," Kruger said. "I like where we're at. The guys know how tough the road is and we have to continue to work and get better every day."

The road likely won't be difficult Wednesday, and Oklahoma should have the opportunity to fine-tune some things while trying to go 5-0 for the first time since the 2008-09 team won its first 12. Oklahoma held on for a 76-73 home victory over Central Arkansas (1-5) in the only previous meeting Dec. 30, 2010, but figures to have an easier time Thursday.

The Bears' 25-game road losing streak is the longest active one in the nation and dates to a 76-75 victory over McNeese State on Jan. 30, 2014.

Central Arkansas is allowing averages of 85.0 points and 52.9 percent shooting. However, it showed some grit while rallying from a 10-point deficit before falling 79-73 at Arkansas-Little Rock on Tuesday.

Jordan Howard scored 22 as the Bears shot 48.9 percent but committed a season-high 19 turnovers.

"We're growing," coach Russ Pennell told the school's official website. "We're a better team than we've been. But like I told them in the locker room, we can't be satisfied with playing people close.

"Because it's still a loss and it still stinks, but we have to learn from it and get better."

            Howard averages a team-leading 16.8 points.

Preview: Wildcats (7-0) at Bruins (4-3)
              Date: December 03, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

Playing on its own floor, top-ranked Kentucky was able to get by a lesser challenger despite being without its point guard.

The team's first true road game will be more difficult if Tyler Ulis remains sidelined Thursday night when the Wildcats face a UCLA squad looking to avenge last year's lopsided meeting.

Kentucky (7-0) was without Ulis for Monday's 75-63 home win against Illinois State due to a hyperextended right elbow, and he may be out again.

Isaiah Briscoe scored a team-high 18 but the team seemed out of sync sans Ulis, who is averaging 13.2 points and 4.3 assists. The Wildcats recorded a season-low eight assists and committed 15 turnovers.

Ulis has committed only six turnovers over his last five games while playing 155 minutes.

"It was a big difference. We missed him out there," Briscoe said. "He's our leader and floor general."

John Calipari and company were encouraged by the play of Marcus Lee, who responded to coming off the bench for the first time with season highs of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Lee had been held to as many points and only three more rebounds over his previous three games combined.

This is the first in a home-and-home series with UCLA visiting Lexington next December. Kentucky dismantled the Bruins in an 83-44 victory on Dec. 20 in Chicago, outscoring them 41-7 in the first half after a 24-0 game-opening run.

UCLA was limited to 26.8 percent shooting - its worst showing in 11 years - and Ulis had seven points, seven rebounds and six assists in 18 minutes.

That marked the Bruins' fifth straight loss to a top-ranked team since a 96-89 overtime win against No. 1 Arizona in the 2003 Pac-10 Tournament.

"Last year was an outlier," Calipari told the school's official website. "I had a ridiculous team. And they would go into a game like that to smoke somebody ... They would go in with that mentality. This team is, we don't have that mentality."

The Wildcats are still outscoring opponents by an average of 17.4 points and their closest result was an 11-point victory against then-No. 5 Duke on Nov. 17.

UCLA (4-3) bounced back from back-to-back losses to Kansas and Wake Forest in Maui by returning home for a 77-45 win against Cal State Northridge on Sunday. The Bruins, who hit a season-high nine 3-pointers, led by 17 at halftime after being outscored by 33 in the first half of the previous two games.

"In Maui we had a couple rough starts and that's been something that's happening to us," coach Steve Alford said. "It was part of the game plan to get ahead first, to punch first, and keep throwing punches."

Tony Parker had 14 points and 11 rebounds for already his fifth double-double.

The Bruins struggled defensively in their first encounter with an elite team, letting then-fifth ranked Kansas shoot 54.2 percent in a 92-73 loss Nov. 24. They've since held two opponents to 34.5 percent shooting, though a new issue has popped up - free-throw shooting. They were 8 for 14 against the Demon Deacons and 10 for 18 against Northridge.

Kentucky owns a 7-4 advantage in the all-time series and won the only previous meeting in Los Angeles, 68-66 on Dec. 4, 1959.

                  Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

NFL trends with Week 13 upon us..........

-- Vikings covered nine of their last ten games.

-- Patriots are 7-0 in game following their last seven losses.

-- Ravens are 2-10-2 vs spread in their last 14 games.

-- 49ers are 0-5 on road (1-4 vs spread), losing by average of 36-14

-- Denver covered nine of last ten as an AFC West road favorite.

-- Falcons are 0-7 vs spread in their last seven games.

                  **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here......

                  13) We've talked about how fine a line there is between winning and losing in the NFL. here's an example. Mike Smith coached Falcons for seven years; in the first five years, he was 28-11 in games decided by 7 or less points. The last two years, he was 5-11 in games decided by 7 or less, and he got fired.

The bounce of a ball, here or there, an injury or two, an official's call.......

                  12) NFC East teams are 9-17 vs spread this year in non-divisional games.

                  11) Jets play a "road game" against the Giants this week; they also played one over in London against the Dolphins, which means they're really playing only six true road games this season, a pretty big advantage in short season of 16 games.

                  10) Davidson won't retire Steph Curry's number because he hasn't graduated from the school. They had a great player named Mike Maloy in the late 60's; same thing with him, he isn't in the school's Hall of Fame because he didn't graduate.

                  9) Will Muschamp made $1.6M this year to be the defensive coordinator at Auburn; Tigers are 6-6, Muschamp is trying to get a head coaching job but even if he doesn't get one, it looks like he won't be coming back to Auburn next year. Boosters aren't fond of shelling out huge money when the ballclub goes 6-6.

                  8) Arizona's big man Kaleb Tarczewski is out 4-6 weeks with a stress fracture in his foot, bad news for a thin, inexperienced Wildcat squad.

                  7) NCAA President Mark Emmert was chancellor at LSU when they signed Nick Saban as football coach in 1999- they gave him $1.2M, a huge amount back then.

                  6) Pittsburgh Pirates won 98 games this year without one complete game by a pitcher, most wins ever by team without a CG-- previous record was 83 wins.

                  5) In his last three games, DeAndre Jordan is 17-54 on the foul line. In the game before that, he didn't take a foul shot in 25 minutes; what were the Pelicans thinking?

                  4) Packers 27, Lions 23-- Green Bay was dead in this game several times, but Detroit wouldn't let them lose. After leading 17-0, Lions gagged game away in epic fashion, as they rushed only three guys on last play, giving Rodgers time to chuck ball down field 62 yards where Richard Rodgers made Motown miserable with the walk-off TD.

                  3) UCLA 87, Kentucky 77-- Bruins trailed 41-7 at half in LY's game; they led 9-2 in this one and were never headed, as Wildcats lose for first time this year. UCLA is 5-3, from everything we read/hear, there are lot of teams who could win a national title as there are no one or two dominant teams like last year.

                  2) Jim Boeheim's 9-game suspension starts Saturday-- he is away from the team the whole time, so pushing the suspension up to now is a big help for Syracuse- he'll be back after three ACC games, instead of nine. He'll miss games against stiff teams like Montana State, Colgate, Colgate and Texas Southern and will be back for games against Duke and Notre Dame.

                  1) Toronto Blue Jays put out their 2016 calendar recently, but one small problem; David Price is on the cover, the same David Price who just signed with the Red Sox for $217M over seven years. Whoops.

Top 25 roundup: UCLA upsets No. 1 Kentucky

Thomas Welsh totaled 21 points and 11 rebounds, and UCLA stunned top-ranked Kentucky 87-77 Thursday night at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

Welsh's second double-double helped the Bruins (5-3) knock off a No. 1 team for the first time since 2003. Guards Bryce Alford and Isaac Hamilton added 15 points apiece for UCLA, which shot 52.8 percent from the field.

Freshman guard Isaiah Briscoe scored 20 points to lead Kentucky (7-1), which was held to 37.9 percent shooting after winning its first seven games by double digits. Freshman guard Jamal Murray had 17 points and five rebounds, but guard Tyler Ulis was held to nine points on 2-of-12 shooting.

                              No. 6 Oklahoma 111, Central Arkansas 68

Jordan Woodard hit six 3-pointers and tied a career high with 24 points, and the Sooners routed the Bears at Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla.

Buddy Hield scored nine of his 19 points at the foul line for Oklahoma, which posted its highest point total since Feb. 17, 1996. Isaiah Cousins added 16 points for the Sooners (5-0).

Jordan Howard and Derreck Brooks scored 13 points apiece to lead Central Arkansas (1-6).

Preview: Ducks (6-0) at Rebels (6-1)
                                Date: December 04, 2015 11:00 PM EDT

Oregon might be undefeated, but there's more than one reason for coach Dana Altman to be concerned heading into its initial game away from home.

Looking to go 7-0 for the second time in three seasons, the No. 15 Ducks face a UNLV team that's off to a solid start Friday night at the MGM Garden Arena.

Oregon averaged 78.8 points, shot 46.6 percent and held its opponents to 38.5-percent shooting from the floor while opening with six consecutive wins at Matthew Knight Arena.

"We've definitely made progress," Altman said.

In addition to being outrebounded by Arkansas State and Fresno State in the last two games, the Ducks' average of 17.0 turnovers is among the highest in the nation.

"We've got a lot of things to work on," Altman said. "Our ball-handling has got to improve tremendously."

For the third time already, the Ducks also allowed a sizable second-half cushion to almost slip away in Monday's 78-73 win over Fresno. They led by 12 at the break and by 19 with just over 14 minutes to play, but the Bulldogs shot 50 percent in the second half to outscore them by seven and make things interesting.

Oregon held a 16-point advantage in the second half of a 74-67 win over then-No. 20 Baylor on Nov. 16 and led by 10 with 5:01 left in beating Valparaiso 73-67 six days later.

"I'd like to finish games stronger," Altman said.

The Ducks will likely need a more complete effort to remain undefeated as the they play the first of three consecutive games away from the home. They should expect a stiff test against UNLV (6-1), which lost by two against UCLA in its opener of the Maui Invitational but beat then-No. 13 Indiana 72-69 two days later.

"We have a very difficult challenge against Oregon, but I'm excited moving forward," UNLV coach Dave Rice said.

Junior Ben Carter should have some extra incentive after he averaged 2.5 points and 2.4 rebounds over 62 games while playing his first two years at Oregon before transferring to UNLV following the 2013-14 season. He scored 12 points off the bench for the Ducks in their 83-79 win over the then-No. 18 Rebels in the most recent meeting Nov. 23, 2012.

Averaging 8.7 points and 6.1 rebounds, Carter has scored 26 points coming off the bench in the last two games.

"Obviously I've been looking forward to this," he said. "But I am going to go in with the same mentality I go into every game. Do whatever I can for our team and do whatever it takes to win.

"At the end of the day it's another opportunity for us to play against a ranked opponent."

Sophomore guard Patrick McCaw is shooting 21 of 45 from 3-point range and averages 19 points to lead four Rebels scoring in double figures. Freshman forward Derrick Jones has been a pleasant surprise averaging 13 points off the bench for a team that's putting up 83.6 per game.

They'll try to contain Oregon sophomore Dillon Brooks (13.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg), who recorded 21 points and 10 rebounds against Fresno State for his second double-double in the last three games.

"You have to have somebody make some plays," Altman said.
