    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Coaching carousel doings the last few days.........

-- USC gave Clay Helton a 5-year contract to be its football coach.

-- Dolphins fired their OC, replaced him with QB coach Zac Taylor, son-in-law of former Packer coach Mike Sherman, who coached Ryan Tannehill at Texas A&M.

-- Looks like Tom Herman will sign a new contract, stay at Houston. His Cougars are in the AAC title game against Temple Saturday.

-- Iowa State signed former Toledo coach Matt Campbell as its coach; Virginia Tech signed former Memphis coach Justin Fuente as its coach.

-- Rutgers fired its football coach and AD this weekend; their athletic program loses a small fortune every year. No excuse for them being bad in basketball- New Jersey is a talent-rich state.

-- Illinois gave interim coach Bill Cubit an unusually-short 2-year deal to be coach

    **********

Armadillo: jTuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) What is the best way to develop quarterbacks? Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota have been thrown to the wolves to play as rookies this year, while Tyrod Taylor and now Brock Osweiler have become starters for the first time, both in their fourth year in the NFL. QB is obviously the most important position on the team; getting the most out of that position goes a long way towards having a winning team.

Taylor, Osweiler weren't great prospects coming out of college; in today's impatient society, high draft picks like Winston, Mariota are rushed into the lineup to sell tickets and generate revenue. Whether that is the wisest approach long-term is debatable.

    12) NFL teams with no turnovers are 62-17 this year. Not counting the eight games where neither team had a turnover.

    11) Clippers/Lakers were both at home at Staples Center Sunday, Clippers during the day, Lakers at night; wonder how many people were at both games?

    10) Jordan Zimmerman gets $110M for five years from the Detroit Tigers; his career record is 70-50, 3.32 in 178 career starts, but now he'll face the DH in most starts, so his ERA figures to go up some.

    9) Mike Jirschele is the Royals' third base coach; I'm guessing he doesn't make a lot of money, but over last two years, his playoff shares from the Royals' success have added up to just over $600,000. For a veteran player, that might not be a lot of money, but to a coach or trainer, thats serious cash.

    8) Singer Marc Anthony is now a sports agent; his first client is Aroldis Chapman, the Reds' closer. When Anthony was married to Jennifer Lopez, they owned a small part of the Miami Dolphins.

    7) Jimmer Fredette had 37 points, 8 assists for Knicks' D-League team last night; I'm guessing he'll get another shot at the NBA sometime this season.

    6) In case you were wondering, former Detroit kicker Jason Hansen has NFL record for most 50+-yard field goals, with 52. Sebastian Janikowski has made 51. Hanson kicked more than half his games in a dome, so that helped.

    5) Random question: Are there more or less injuries in games without huddles? I'm thinking as players get tired with no huddles, there are less violent collisions.

    4) Few days before Utah State's first basketball game, one of their best players said he was transferring, but the school won't release him from his scholarhsip, which means the kid will have to pay tuition for the first year at his next school. People were quick to criticize Utah State, but it looks like they have a case here.

It was reported that UNLV coach Dave Rice called Utah State and told coaches that someone representing David Collette called UNLV, trying to gauge their interest in the kid playing there, not exactly ethical. So someone is shopping Collette around and Utah State is ticked off, and rightfully so. Player poaching is becoming an epidemic.

    3) You can challenge pass interference in the CFL and in Grey Cup game Sunday, it became a pivotal play in Edmonton's 26-20 win over Ottawa. Eskimos got a penalty called after a replay review when they trailed 20-18 with 3:30 left. Interesting rule.

    2) Charleston 70, LSU 58-- ESPN has to stop with the Ben Simmons hype; young man is going to be a very fine player, but LSU lost twice in Brooklyn and got waxed in Charleston last night. ESPN's announcers were adamant last two weeks that Simmons is the best college player in the country, but he isn't.......yet.

    1) Ravens 33, Browns 27 OT-- Teams have lousy records, but this was a fun game to watch between divisional rivals. Game ended on a blocked FG for TD by Baltimore, which scored two TDs on special teams. All 11 Raven games this year were decided by 8 or less points, first team ever thats ever happened to.

NFL oddsmakers give red-hot Lions plenty of respect versus Packers

The Lions have won three in a row SU and ATS but are still field-goal underdogs against the struggling Packers, who have lost three of their last four games.

A month ago, the Green Bay Packers were the toast of the NFC, and the talent-laden Detroit Lions were a mess.

Detroit got shellacked at Kansas City 45-10 as a 3-point pup on November 1. But on that same day, in the Sunday night game, Green Bay was dealt its first loss of the year, a 29-10 setback at Denver as a 2.5-point favorite.

Since then, the Packers have lost three of four games SU and ATS, while the Lions have won all three of their outings SU and ATS, including a stunning 18-16 win catching 10.5 points at Green Bay on November 15. On Thanksgiving Day, both teams played, with Detroit ripping Philadelphia 45-14 as a 3-point home fave and the Pack continuing to slide in a 17-13 home loss giving 7.5 points to Chicago.

Now, struggling Green Bay (7-4 SU, 6-5 ATS) heads to surging Detroit (4-7 SU and ATS) Thursday to kick off Week 13. John Lester, senior lines manager for Bookmaker.eu, opened the Packers as 3-point chalk.

“Through the first two months of the season, we’d be looking to make the Packers double-digit chalk here, but things have changed drastically,” Lester said. “We’ll obviously see a ton of Green Bay money from the betting public, but I’m interested to see where the sharps stand. The Lions have looked more in sync and confident of late, but this will be a hungry Packers bunch.”

Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for Wynn Las Vegas, gave Green Bay a little bit more of an edge.

“The Packers are struggling, and the Lions seem to have found their best stride,” Avello said. “I opened the Packers a 3.5-point favorite, and a lot of it was my gut telling me that both teams need to come back to reality.

New York Jets at New York Giants (Pick)

It’s a battle for Big Apple bragging rights, between two teams trying to find some playoff footing.

The Jets (6-5 SU, 5-5-1 ATS) rolled past Miami 38-20 Sunday as 4.5-point chalk, ending a two-game SU skid and a four-game ATS slide. The Giants (5-6 SU, 6-4-1 ATS) continued to allow the rest of the NFC to have some semblance of hope, losing to Washington 20-14 giving one point on the road Sunday.

“The Battle of New York may very well be the demise for one of these teams,” Avello said. “The Giants can afford the loss more, as they’d still only be one win away from claiming the top spot in the NFC East. Eli Manning is so Jekyll and Hyde, it’s difficult for both linemakers and bettors to figure this team out.”

Lester said the Jets have drawn the early sharp bettors.

“We’ll see no shortage of action for this huge Week 13 matchup at East Rutherford. It’s a classic tossup game,” he said. “The Jets have a slight edge as far as the power ratings, but we know we’ll be seeing a ton of support from the Giants’ faithful. The early, sharper action has come in on the J-E-T-S.”

Seattle Seahawks at Minnesota Vikings (Pick)

The Vikings continue to surprise the league, cashing for bettors and taking advantage of NFC North rival Green Bay’s slide. Minnesota (8-3 SU, 9-2 ATS) dropped Atlanta 20-10 Sunday as a 2-point road pup, moving to 6-1 SU in its last seven and 9-1 ATS in its last 10.

The Seahawks (6-5 SU, 4-6-1 ATS) kept themselves afloat in the playoff race by outlasting Pittsburgh 39-30 Sunday, covering as a 3-point home favorite. The two-time defending NFC champs have won four of their last five SU, but got some bad news in Sunday’s win, losing tight end Jimmy Graham for the season with a knee injury.

“Another game where it will be interesting to see where the bettors take this number,” Lester said. “Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and the offense seem to be coming together at the right time. The Vikings will look to ride Adrian Peterson, but it’s likely that the Seahawks will stack the box and look to force Teddy Bridgewater into more throws than he’s accustomed to making.”

Avello moved slightly off the pick ‘em line.

“I opened Seattle a very small road favorite. Not because of their defense that we've all been believers in over the past few years, but because of their offensive production and overall experience against a young and still learning Teddy Bridgewater,” he said.

Indianapolis Colts at Pittsburgh Steelers (N/A)

Indianapolis has managed to stay with Houston atop the AFC North, despite having to start 40-year-old Matt Hasselbeck in place of injured Andrew Luck. On Sunday, the Colts (6-5 SU and ATS) topped Tampa Bay 25-12 laying three points at home.

Pittsburgh (6-5 SU, 6-4-1 ATS), getting three points at Seattle, lost a shootout 39-30. Perhaps worse though, as the Steelers try to stay in the playoff picture, QB Ben Roethlisberger left late in the game with a possible concussion. With his status uncertain, the opening line on this game will have to wait.

“Ben Roethlisberger was so good this week at Seattle, it will be a shame if he doesn't play against the Colts on Sunday,” Avello said. “I haven't seen him that sharp in quite some time.”

Lester added that it’s almost old hat for the consistently banged-up Roethlisberger this year.

“It feels like every week, we’re waiting to hear about the status of Ben Roethlisberger, and this week will be no different as he goes through the concussion protocol,” he said. “Big Ben is worth at least a touchdown to the line, so if he isn’t available, it will greatly impact where we set this game. The Colts have come together a bit, but Matt Hasselbeck is going to lose at some point.”

NBA roundup: Warriors stay perfect, barely

SALT LAKE CITY -- Stephen Curry scored 12 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter Monday as the Golden State Warriors continued the best start in NBA history with a 106-103 win over the Utah Jazz.

The star point guard came up with multiple clutch 3-pointers and free throws late in the fourth quarter to fend off a feisty and young Jazz squad.

The Warriors improved to 19-0 and increased their road record to 9-0, one shy of a franchise record for consecutive wins away from home.

Gordon Hayward scored 24 points to lead Utah. The small forward missed a desperation half-court heave at the buzzer after Curry hit two free throws with 2.4 seconds remaining to put the Warriors up by three.

        Bulls 92, Spurs 89

CHICAGO -- Pau Gasol led five Chicago players in double-figures scoring with 18 points and 13 rebounds, and the Chicago ended San Antonio's five-game winning streak.

The Spurs lost for just the second time in 11 games, while the Bulls rebounded from a 104-92 road loss Friday to the Indiana Pacers.

Jimmy Butler hit a pair of free throws to put the Bulls up by what turned out to be the final score with 10.6 seconds left in the fourth.

        Bucks 92, Nuggets 74

MILWAUKEE -- Jabari Parker scored 16 points as Milwaukee snapped a three-game losing streak.

Out of the starting lineup for a second consecutive game, Parker came off the bench to score 10 points in the first quarter, hitting all four of his shots from the field and a pair of free throw attempts.

Michael Carter-Williams also came off the bench and responded by scoring 12 points on five-of-9 shooting with six rebounds, nine assists and three blocks in 30 minutes of work.

        Celtics 105 Heat 95

MIAMI -- Avery Bradley scored 25 points to lead Boston over Miami.

Boston also got 17 points from center Jared Sullinger. Forward Amir Johnson had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Heat were led by guard Dwyane Wade, who posted season highs of 30 points and five steals, but matched a season high with seven turnovers.

        Pistons 116, Rockets 105

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Reggie Jackson had 31 points and eight assists, and Detroit built a 28-point first-half lead before holding off Houston.

Andre Drummond supplied 24 points and 13 rebounds despite shooting four-for-18 from the free-throw line. Rookie small forward Stanley Johnson notched the first double-double of his career with 19 points and a season-high 10 rebounds, and small forward Marcus Morris chipped in 12 points and six assists for the Pistons.

James Harden, the league's second-leading scorer, had 29 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for Houston.

        Hawks 106, Thunder 100

ATLANTA -- Jeff Teague scored 25 points, six of them during a 10-2 fourth-quarter run, to help Atlanta outlast Oklahoma City.

Teague was 10 for 17 from the field, including the go-ahead layup with 1:08 remaining. Teague added five assists as Atlanta ended Oklahoma City's four-game winning streak.

The Hawks also got 26 points and 11 rebounds from Paul Millsap, who fought through an elbow to the face late in the first half, and 21 points and 10 rebounds from Al Horford.

Game of the Day: Wizards at Cavaliers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Over has gone 6-1 in the Cavalirs' last seven home games.

Washington Wizards at Cleveland Cavaliers (-7.5, 202.5)

The last thing the struggling Washington Wizards need is a trip to the top team in the Eastern Conference, but that’s exactly what they’re going to get. The Wizards will try to snap a four-game slide when they visit the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday.

Washington seemed to bottom out with a 111-78 loss at the Boston Celtics on Friday but suffered another crushing blow when Cory Joseph buried a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the Toronto Raptors an 84-82 win over the Wizards on Saturday. "We’ve got to cut the negativity that we have coming from players, coaches, staff, media. We just got to cut that," Wizards center Marcin Gortat told reporters. "It’s not even fun coming here anymore. It’s so much negativity.” The Cavaliers are not dealing with any negativity after five wins in the last six games and are 9-0 at home. Cleveland was on the good side of a last-second win on Saturday, when LeBron James tossed in a baby hook in the lane to knock off the Brooklyn Nets 90-88.

              TV:
7 p.m. ET, NBATV, CSN Mid-Atlantic (Washington), FSN Ohio (Cleveland)

              LINE HISTORY:
Online shop TopBet.eu opened the Cavs as 7.5-point home faves and the total at 202.5.

              INJURY REPORT:

Wizards - SG Bradley Beal (Probable, ankle), PF Drew Gooden (Questionable, back), PF Nene (Doubtful, calf), SG Alan Anderson (Early Dec., ankle).

Cavs - SG Iman Shumpert (Mid February, wrist), PG Kyrie Irving (Out indefinitely, knee).

              POWER RANKINGS:
              Wizards (-3) + Cavs (-12) + home court (-3.0) = Cavs -12

              WHAT CAPPERS SAY:
"The Wizards are struggling as they enter this game on a 0-4 SU (1-3 ATS) run in their past four games. Leading scorer guard Bradley Beal injured his ankle on Saturday, but he is expected to play tonight. Beal leads the team in scoring (19.6 ppg) and minutes per game (34:50) this season. Even with Beal playing, the Wizards will still be short-handed as guard Gary Neal is doubtful with a groin injury, while forward Nene is out with a calf injury. Neal is fifth on the team in scoring (9.5 ppg) and an excellent shooter who leads the team with 46% three-point shooting this season. Nene is averaging 7.6 ppg and is the team's second best rebounder (4.9 rpg)."

              ABOUT THE WIZARDS (6-8 SU, 6-8 ATS, 8-5-1 O/U):
Gortat was blunt in his assessment of the team, which entered the season with big expectations but has struggled in a new offense that spreads the perimeter and leaves Gortat alone in the middle. “Everybody thought we’re going to go to conference finals and stuff like that,” Gortat told reporters. “We didn’t make any spectacular trades or signings in the offseason. It’s not like we’re supposed to be three times a much better team this year.” Gortat put up 16 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday for his second double-double in the last three games.

              ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (13-4 SU, 7-10 ATS, 10-7 O/U):
Cleveland guard J.R. Smith scored in double figures in seven straight games before struggling to 3-of-12 from the field on Saturday, but he still provided a contribution with four blocks and three steals. “He’s making the effort at both ends of the court,” Cavaliers coach David Blatt told reporters of Smith. “He’s taking on challenges and really has given us good play. I’m not surprised. I know he’s capable of it. I know he’s willing to give us that and we needed that.” Smith is 1-of-9 from 3-point range in the last two games after knocking down at least three from beyond the arc in each of the previous five.

              TRENDS:

              * Under is 11-4 in the last 15 meetings.
              * Underdog is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
              * Cavaliers are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games following a ATS loss.
              * Over is 6-1 in Cavaliers last seven home games.

              CONSENSUS:
              N/A.
