    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)
six most popular picks in Week 12 season record: 35-35-2

    6) Giants -3 (385)-- Washington won its last four home games- L.

    5) Patriots -3 (407)-- Lot of opinions on this game, both ways.

    4) Browns -2.5 (409)-- Not a lot of faith in Matt Schaub as Ravens' QB.

    3) Broncos +3 (415)-- I'm guessing this game will get huge TV ratings.

    2) Steelers +3.5 (531)-- Roethlisberger's first-ever game in Seattle- L.

    1) Buccaneers +3.5 (567)-- Not lot of faith in 40-year Colt QB Hasselbeck- L.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday......

    13) Broncos 30, Patriots 24 OT-- When he was in 9th grade, Gonzaga's basketball team offered Brock Osweiler a scholarship; good thing for John Elway he turned them down and played QB at Arizona State, where he started for only one year and a 6-7 season at that. It is very possible we've seen Peyton Manning play for the last time.

Michael Irvin's comment on NFL Network right after this game: "He just made a lot of money", referring to Osweiler. Funny how some people's minds work.

    12) Seahawks 39, Steelers 30-- Not a big fan of NFL having only two 4:25 games and nine 1:00 games-- would like one or two more 4:25 games. Mike Tomlin's career record is 88-51; he's won a Super Bowl, but he does some odd things, like going for two in first half when score was 16-14, or that bizarre fake FG that blew up and led to Seattle's first TD. You have Big Ben, why fake a field goal?.

By the way, Roethlisberger threw for 456 yards but left late with a concussion.

    11) Texans 24, Saints 6-- Houston is not only tied for first in AFC South, they'd be in the playoffs as a Wild Card if they started this morning. As badly as Chiefs-Texans started this season they'd both be in the playoffs right now. Takes good coaching to keep your players' heads in the game when things are going rotten.

Texans-Patriots game on Dec 13 is now a Sunday night game, replacing Seattle's game in Baltimore, which should make Ravens fans happier-- lot warmer at 1:00 than 8:30. .

    10) Vikings 20, Falcons 10-- Speaking of things going rotten, Falcons have now lost five of last six games after a 5-0 start; Ryan threw an awful red zone pick when game was 7-3 and Falcons had driven ball for 66 yards in first 7:01 of second half. Natives in Atlanta weren't too pleased with that one, after the pick-6 Ryan threw last week.

    9) Bengals 31, Rams 7-- Cincinnati is very good; this is the kind of game good teams win and leave no doubt about the outcome. Wheels have fallen off for a St Louis team that was 4-3 four weeks ago-- November wasn't a great month.

In today's society, patience is passe; fire the coach, change the QB, fire the GM- if you don't win, heads must roll. But think about these Rams; they blew the game last week in Baltimore, they lost in OT at Minnesota. win those two games, or the close game they lost to Pittsburgh, and they're 6-5 and tied for a playoff spot, and everyone is excited. The margin between winning/losing teams in NFL is very, very thin.

    8) Colts 25, Buccaneers 12-- Indy is 4-0 when 40-year old backup Hasselbeck starts, 2-5 when Andrew Luck starts- they shut Bucs out in second half, and won despite 26 rushing attempts for 27 yards. Indy had 13-yard edge in field position, which is huge.

    7) In basketball news, Michigan beat Providence 77-64 to win the Anaheim tourney and Xavier beat Dayton 90-61 in Orlando. Alabama left Florida with two wins, good weekend for them after getting whacked by Dayton in their opener. Oklahoma waxed Wisconsin by 17, Wichita State left Orlando with three losses.

Former President George W Bush was at the Brown-SMU game in Dallas.

    6) Raiders 24, Titans 21-- Tennessee has lost 11 home games in a row; they scored with 4:41 left to lead 21-17, but Oakland scored with 1:21 left to snap a 3-game skid. There are rumors that Tennessee might go after Chip Kelly to coach Mariota, which would be an odd situation. If I'm an Eagles fan, it wouldn't break my heart.

    5) Chiefs 30, Bills 22-- Andy Heck is offensive line coach for KC, which lost three linemen in this game, but they kept shuffling players and still ran for 158 yards, with no turnovers on a rainy day at Arrowhead. Tremendous coaching; offensive line play takes cohesiveness and teamwork- the Chiefs have won/covered five games in a row, and are now in the thick of the AFC playoff race.

    4) Jets 38, Dolphins 20-- Jets are +14 in turnovers in their six wins, -13 in their five losses. Ryan Fitzpatrick has been a warrior, playing with a screwed-up left thumb. As for Ryan Tannehill, he threw 58 passes in this game- they ran the bleeping ball nine times for 12 yards, in the whole game!!!! Tannehill is getting a lot of people fired.

    3) Chargers 31, Jaguars 25-- All four AFC West teams won this week; Bolts ended a six-game skid here- their last previous win was final day of baseball's regular season. Someone suggested this week that the owners of the Rams/Jaguars trade franchises, as Shad Khan once tried to buy the Rams- then Stan Kroenke could move the Jags to LA.

    2) Redskins 20, Giants 14-- These teams are tied for first in NFC East......at 5-6. It is conceivable that all four NFC East teams could change head coaches this winter, but for now, one of these mediocre-at-best teams is going to make the playoffs. Redskins averaged 10.4 ypa in this game; Giants ran ball 13 times for 33 yards.

    1) Cardinals 19, 49ers 13-- Niners were 0-9 on third down, had 13 penalties for 81 yards were -2 in turnovers and still might've won had they not been screwed on a bad roughing/passer call late in game. The lineman came in, crushed Palmer for a sack but the ref called roughing the passer for hitting the QB too hard. Good grief and believe me, as a Rams fan, I have no love for the 49ers.

Crimson Tide open as huge chalk for conference championship week

Alabama has opened as 17-point favorites over Florida for the SEC Championship Game.

Clemson may be the No. 1 team in the college football playoff rankings, but the Tigers aren’t the team most expected to make it to the national semifinals.

That would be the Alabama Crimson Tide, based on the opening lines for next Saturday’s conference championship game. Nick Saban’s squad (11-1 SU, 7-5 ATS) heads into Saturday’s Southeastern Conference title tilt as a 17-point chalk against Florida, according to Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports at Wynn Las Vegas.

‘Bama is coming off a 29-13 victory laying 14.5 points at Auburn on Saturday, its ninth consecutive SU win since a stunning home loss to Mississippi. It was also the fourth straight week that the Tide cashed for bettors.

On the flip side, Florida is coming off its worst performance of the year. The Gators (10-2 SU, 7-5 ATS), 2.5-point home underdogs to rival Florida State, mustered only a safety in a 27-2 loss Saturday. That knocked them entirely out of the playoff picture, even if they somehow stun Alabama this week at the Georgia Dome.

“The Gators do play very good defense, but that can only get you so far,” Avello said, noting Florida ranks fifth nationally in both points allowed (15.5 ppg) and yards allowed (283.6 ypg). “Scoring two points won’t win many games. The Seminoles’ Dalvin Cook ran for 183 yards Saturday, and now the Gators get the unenviable task of shutting down the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, Alabama’s Derrick Henry.”

ACC Championship Game - North Carolina vs. Clemson (-5.5)

The Tigers (12-0 SU, 5-7 ATS) will try to complete a perfect run and wrap up a playoff berth in the Atlantic Coast Conference final in Charlotte, N.C. Clemson wrapped up the regular season by fending off instate rival South Carolina 37-32, falling far short as a 20.5-point road chalk.

North Carolina has also been stout since suffering a Week 1 loss at South Carolina. The Tar Heels (11-1 SU, 8-4 ATS) followed by winning 11 in a row SU to reach the ACC final, including a 45-34 victory Saturday as a 3.5-point fave at North Carolina State.

“It’s been a great year for Clemson, and it’s hard to believe they went undefeated with 24 total turnovers. The Tigers escaped on all the close calls, and here they are playing in the ACC championship game and ranked No. 1 in the playoff rankings,” Avello said. “One of Clemson’s weaknesses is its rush defense (130 ypg). It’s imperative the Tigers stop Tar Heels running back Elijah Hood, who’s been on a tear lately.

“I’ll open this game with Clemson around a 5-point favorite, noting that the Tar Heels get a touch of home-field advantage.”

Big Ten Championship Game - Michigan State (-3) vs. Iowa

The Hawkeyes are arguably the biggest surprise of the 2015 season. Iowa (12-0 SU, 7-5 ATS) stayed perfect with a 28-20 victory at Nebraska as a 2.5-point favorite Saturday.

Michigan State suffered its only loss of the season at Nebraska four weeks ago, 39-38 as a 3.5-point chalk. But the Spartans (11-1 SU, 5-7 ATS) have had a huge bounceback, going 3-0 SU and ATS, including a road upset of Ohio State and a regular-season-ending, 55-16 blowout of Penn State giving 7.5 points at home Saturday.

“At the start of the season, this is not what we envisioned the Big 10 championship would look like,” Avello said of the Michigan State-Iowa matchup, to be held in Indianapolis. “The Hawkeyes, by winning the weaker West Division, will have to prevail over the stronger East Division winner to show they belong in the elite final four.”

Pac-12 Championship Game - Stanford (-4) vs. Southern California

The Cardinal still have an outside shot at the playoff, but would need to beat USC in the Pac-12 title game and see Clemson or Alabama – and possibly both – lose on conference championship weekend. Stanford (10-2 SU, 8-4 ATS) capped the regular season with a last-second field goal to best Notre Dame 38-36 Saturday giving 4 points at home.
The Trojans (8-4, 6-6 ATS) managed to reach the Pac-12 final after firing coach Steve Sarkisian midseason.
Southern Cal won five of its last six games SU (3-3 ATS), including a 40-21 rout of archrival UCLA on Saturday as a 3-point home chalk.

These two teams met in Week 3, with the visiting Cardinal taking a 41-31 win and cover as a healthy 9.5-point pup. This week’s contest is at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers.

“It’s been a challenging year for the Trojans,” Avello said. “They certainly have enough talent to compete for college’s top prize, but inconsistent play, not to mention losing their head coach, did them in early for that goal.

“In that Week 3 meeting, Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan beat USC for the first time in his career. USC quarterback Cody Kessler played very well, but Hogan was better. Both teams are playing very well, except for blemishes against Oregon. Opening Stanford just a touch more than a field goal feels like the right price here.”

Iowa dominated No. 20 Wichita State with a smooth and efficient offense to win the seventh-place game 84-61 in the AdvoCare Invitational at the HP Field House in Orlando, Fla., on Sunday.

Senior guard Ron Baker scored eight points for the Shockers (2-4), who lost their third straight game.
