Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Texas A&M 62, Gonzaga 61-- Had the feel of a March game, not November.

-- Monmouth 70, Notre Dame 68-- Hawks have beaten UCLA, Notre Dame and should contend in MAAC this winter.

-- Dayton 82, Iowa 77-- Loser of Iowa-Notre Dame game today will play in the 7th place game Sunday, which is totally unexpected.

-- Michigan State 99, Boston College 68-- Tom Izzo wins his 500th game.

-- Arizona 75, Santa Clara 73 OT-- Broncos are 0-6; this is a red flag for Arizona.

-- San Diego State 72, Cal 58-- Aztecs outscored Cal 44-22 in second half.

13) Lions 45, Eagles 14-- It'll be surprising to me if Chip Kelly is still coaching the Eagles next year. He's totally failed as a personnel guy and worst of all,, the players appear to have quit on him. He can still make a fortune going back to college......

12) Panthers 33, Cowboys 14-- Luckily there was several good college basketball games on during the day yesterday; the two NFL games were awful. Carolina is 11-0 and is an underrated team; no one talks about them unless they're complaining about Cam Newton's TD celebrations.

It bears repeating: Panthers have won 15 regular season games in a row.

In 11 games this year, on the opponents' first drive of the game, Carolina's defense outscored the other team's offense 7-3-- they're very well-prepared and they haven't lost yet. Mainstream media doesn't seem to be taking them seriously.

11) Bears 17, Packers 13-- Green Bay has lost four of its last five games, is behind Minnesota again in NFC North. NFL-wide, divisional home favorites are 13-23-2 vs spread this season. Chicago is 5-3 in its last eight games after an 0-3 start-- this was only the Bears' second win in last eight visits to Lambeau Field.

10) Saw a picture yesterday of a turkey that was cooked while totally wrapped in bacon; not sure how that would taste. I like turkey and I also like bacon, so I guess it would be pretty good. Not necessarily healthy, but good.

9) USC 72, Wichita State 69-- Shockers' best player didn't play, but Trojans are 5-0 for the first time in 15 years- they play Xavier tonight.

8) WCC is generally thought of as the second-best basketball league on the west coast, but so far this season, WCC teams are 1-10 against the spread when playing teams from the Big West Conference- Big West is usually #4 on that list .

7) Apparently this is American Idol's last year on FOX; I thought they should've done one season where all the competitors were 50+ years old, thought it would've been an interesting concept. This is why I don't work for a TV network.

6) Must be a cool feeling to be such a good shooter that when you get the ball outside the 3-point arc, your teammates signal for three points, even before you shoot.

5) I had no idea cranberries are the state fruit of Wisconsin.

4) They're having a pretty good basketball tournament in the Bahamas at Atlantis resort; half the games are on AXS TV, which I had never heard of before this week. It is channel 340 on DirecTV.

Thursday morning AXS had an interview show on where Dan Rather interviewed musician Gregg Allman-- guy has been married six freakin' times, including once to Cher. I read once that second marriages are a triumph of hope over experience.

3) South Florida 44, Central Florida 3-- UCF finishes their season 0-12; some poor soul actually went to this game with a sign that said "Beat Somebody". Oy.

2) Texas Tech 48, Texas 45-- Longhorns are 4-7; if Chip Kelly sent out a feeler for their coaching job tomorrow, when would the introductory press conference be?

1) RIP Coach Guy Lewis, who passed away this week at age 93. Coach Lewis took the Houston Cougars to five Final Fours and had some of the most entertaining teams of the pre-shot clock/3-point era. He coached Hayes-Drexler-Olajuwon, some of the best players ever. Houston hasn't won an NCAA game since he stopped coaching.

Ohio State has already lost at home to Tex-Arlington, La Tech; best team they've beaten is #217 Mt St Mary's; Buckeyes have played a very easy (#343) schedule so far- they're #345 in experience. Memphis just lost at home to Tex-Arlington too; Tigers are shooting 21.4% from arc during a 2-2 start- their wins are over stiffs. AAC underdogs are 7-4 vs spread. .

Disney World tournament
Alabama has new coach, is 2-2, losing by 32-19; their best win was over UL-Lafayette. Crimson Tide didn't play anyone more than 26:00 in loss to Xavier. Wichita State star VanVleet (hamstring) is out here; Shockers lost by 3 yesterday, playing Baker 39:00. USC shot 12-23 from the arc against them. Missouri Valley favorites are 3-13 vs spread this month.

Notre Dame played four starters 32:00+ yesterday; they forced only six turnovers against #116 Monmouth, best team they've played so far this month. Irish have #58 eFG%, are making 37.8% on arc. Iowa is 3-1 after 82-77 loss to Dayton; Hawkeyes are shooting 43.9% from arc- they used two starters 31:00+ Thursday- they start four seniors and a junior.

Xavier is 5-0, beating Missouri by 12, Michigan by 16, in its only road game so far; they are a top 25 rebounding team nationally, but they got off to horrible start vs Bama yesterday. USC is off to first 5-0 start in 15 years, scoring 92.5 ppg; they're shooting 42.0% behind the arc (12-23 vs Wichita). Xavier played seven guys 20:00+, only one guy 30:00+.

Monmouth beat UCLA in Westwood, beat Notre Dame yesterday, as PG Robinson was 14-15 on foul line and controlled game. Hawks scored 81.5 ppg so far this month. Dayton is 4-0, winning NCAA-style game over Iowa last nite. Flyers have turned ball over 23.3% of time- they're a young team that is playing bench a lot (36.3%). Three of four Dayton opponents are ranked #103 or better. .

Atlantis tournament
Gonzaga hadn't played a close game until yesterday- they were 4-11 on foul line in 62-61 loss that seemed like an NCAA tourney game. UConn lost to Syracuse by 3 yesterday, they played three starters 32:00+ and Hamilton played 42:00. Zags have #2 eFG% defense in country- they're loaded up front but guards didn't get big guys a touch on last possession in loss to Aggies yesterday.

Texas A&M won first two games in tourney by total of four points; they start three seniors; they used two guys more than 28:00. Aggies aren't taking lot of 3's but they're making 45.5% of them (#7). Syracuse isn't as big as usual but they've got better shooters now- they made 23-48 in first two days here. Orangemen aren't deep; four guys played 32:00+ Thurs.

Michigan pounded on overmatched Charlotte by 55 yesterday, so guys got lot of rest. Wolverines were 12-23 on arc, are shooting 42.2% on arc this month. Texas avenged loss to Washington in China- they got to line 42 times yesterday. Texas isn't pressing as much as the VCU teams did for Smart; they start four seniors, two of which are 6-10. Michigan is #37 at protecting ball, so probably just as well.

Fullerton tournament
UC-Irvine is 4-1 after Boise made 11-28 on arc yesterday; teams came in shooting 22.8% from arc vs UCI. 7-6 C Ndiaye clogs up middle, so you have to shoot well from arc to score on Irvine. Boston College is shooting 39.6% from arc so far; they lost by 31 yesterday to Mich State- Eagles start a couple freshmen- only two guys played more than 23:00 vs MSU.

Michigan State won first five games, beating Kansas 79-73 on a neutral floor; Spartans crushed BC yesterday, getting Izzo win #500- they used two guys more than 21:00 vs BC. Boise made 11-28 on arc vs Cal-Irvine- they're 2-2 vs D-I teams, losing to Montana/Arizona. Big 14 favorites are 6-8 vs spread on neutral floors. Mountain West dogs are 10-4 vs spread.

Providence plays almost all frosh/sophs except for star G Dunn, one of best players in country; Friars are forcing turnovers 24.8% of time- they outscored Evansville 23-5 on line in comfortable win last nite. Arizona was life/death to beat 0-6 Santa Clara; Brownridge had 44 on Wildcats and made it look easy. Most people would take Dunn over Brownridge.

Orleans Arena tournament
Richmond won three of last four games, upsetting Wake Forest 91-82 but going 21-35 on line in loss last nite- West Virginia made them go faster than they wanted to. Cal Bears lost for first time last night after leading by 7 at half; they're starting two freshmen, aren't forcing many turnovers. Pac-12 favorites are 17-16 vs spread. Atlantic 14 underdogs are 9-6.

West Virginia is off to 5-0 start, with best two wins over James Madison, Richmond- Spiders turned ball over 14 times (21.9%), after WVa forced turnovers 31.6% of time in first four games. San Diego State is 4-2 after coming back from down 7 at half to beat Cal, a solid win. This will be a very physical game with lot of bricks; WVa is #1 offensive rebounding team in country. Aztecs played six guys 25:00+ last night.

Top 25 roundup: No. 25 Texas A&M upends No. 10 Gonzaga

Danuel House scored 19 points, including the go-ahead free throw, as No. 25 Texas A&M upset No. 10 Gonzaga 62-61 on Thursday in the semifinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in Paradise Island, Bahamas, on Thursday.

House made the first of two free throws with 1:05 left for the final margin. The Aggies meet Syracuse in Friday's title game.

The Bulldogs got the ball back with 13.5 seconds left, but Silas Melson missed a step-back 17-footer at the buzzer amid tight defense.

Tonny Trocha-Morelos had 14 points and hit all four of his 3-point attempts, including one at the halftime buzzer for a 35-32 lead for Texas A&M. The Aggies had been winless in 26 consecutive games against Top 10 foes dating to January 2008.

Gonzaga's Kyle Wiltjer broke out of a shooting slump with 18 points.

No. 3 Michigan State 99, Boston College 68

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo posted the 500th win of his career when the Spartans overwhelmed Boston College in a quarterfinal matchup at the Wooden Legacy tournament in Fullerton, Calif.

Michigan State got the second triple-double from Denzel Valentine this season. Valentine put up 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in 29 minutes, helping the Spartans connect on 62.7 percent of their shots from the field.

Guard Eli Carter scored 22 points to pace Boston College.

No. 8 Villanova 59, Stanford 45

Villanova's defense smothered Stanford into a miserable night from the floor and the Wildcats advanced to the final of the NIT Season Tip-Off at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Cardinal struggled to make a quarter of their shots, finishing 13 of 50 (26.0 percent) from the floor, and had 23 turnovers.

Jalen Brunson led Villanova with a career-high 18 points. Marcus Allen had 12 points for Stanford.

No. 11 Arizona 75, Santa Clara 73 (OT)

Gabe York made one of two free throws with 3.9 seconds left in overtime for the go-ahead point, and the Wildcats overcame 44 points from Broncos guard Jared Brownridge to win in the Wooden Legacy tournament in Fullerton, Calif.

York scored seven of his 11 points in overtime, and teammate Ryan Anderson finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Kaleb Tarczewski had 12 points and eight rebounds for Arizona, but he left the game with 6:29 left in the second half because of an injury to his left ankle and did not return.

Arizona will play Providence (5-0) in a semifinal Friday night. Santa Clara (0-6) will play Evansville in the losers' bracket.

San Diego State 72, No. 14 Cal 58

The Aztecs rallied from a big deficit to hand the Bears their first loss of the season, earning a victory in the Las Vegas Invitational at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

Winston Shepard and Skylar Spencer came off the bench to score 15 points apiece for San Diego State (4-2), which outscored Cal 40-13 over the final 16:57. Jeremy Hemsley scored 14 points, and Zylan Cheatham had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Ivan Rabb had 18 points and nine rebounds for Cal (4-1). Tyrone Wallace scored 16 points, and Jordan Mathews had 10.

Monmouth 70, No. 17 Notre Dame 69

Monmouth added another big-name scalp to its growing early season list as Justin Robinson sank two free throws with 3.6 seconds left, giving the Hawks an upset of Notre Dame in a quarterfinal matchup at the Advocare Invitational in Kissimmee, Fla.

Robinson finished with a game-high 22 points and four assists for Monmouth, which knocked off a Top 25 team for the first time in 24 tries. The Hawks opened the season with a win at UCLA. Micah Seaborn added 15 points and Je'Lon Hornbeak had 12 for Monmouth, which overcame a 37-29 halftime deficit to advance to a Friday night semifinal.

All five Fighting Irish starters scored in double figures, led by Demetrius Jackson's 20 points.

Syracuse 79, No. 18 Connecticut 76

Michael Gbinije and Trevor Cooney each scored 17 points to lead balanced Syracuse past Connecticut in the semifinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in Paradise Island, Bahamas.

The former Big East rivals were playing for the first time since the 2012-13 season, after which the Orange left for the ACC and the Huskies joined the American Athletic Conference.

Syracuse plays No. 25 Texas A&M in Friday's championship game. UConn plays Gonzaga in the consolation.

Daniel Hamilton had 18 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for UConn.

USC 72, No. 20 Wichita State 69

Bennie Boatwright hit five 3-point shots and scored a career-high 22 points as USC upset Wichita State in the quarterfinals of the AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando, Fla..

The Shockers were without Fred VanVleet, an All-America candidate who missed his second game because of a hamstring injury. He is unlikely to play in the tournament.
