    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Kansas 70, Vanderbilt 63-- Maui final could've been a Final Four preview

-- Texas A&M 84, Texas 73-- Aggies are another strong SEC team.

-- Gonzaga 80, Washington 64-- Huskies-Texas play for second time today.

-- UConn 80, Michigan 64-- UConn-Syracuse play today in Atlantis.

-- Wake Forest 80, UCLA 77-- Productive week in Maui for Demon Deacons

-- UNLV 72, Indiana 69-- Hoosiers play like they're having zero fun.

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.......

    13) I watch the Miami Marlins play a lot; Giancarlo Stanton is on my fantasy team; was stunned when I read Tuesday that the Marlins fired Tommy Hutton as their TV analyst, after 19 years with the team. Why?

Hutton is smart, funny, fair, a friendly voice on a summer night, working for a team that is incredibly dysfunctional. Hope he finds another job on TV.

    12) Al Avila is Executive VP/GM of the Detroit Tigers; his son is Alex Avila, who just signed a free agent deal with the White Sox, after seven years with Detroit. Says on Tigers' website that Al Avila is still married to Yamile Avila, who is Alex' mom.

I know lot of couples, where if the dad cut the son, he'd be spending Thanksgiving weekend sleeping on the couch. I'm just sayin'.....

    11) Alaskan Shootout is great; a live college basketball doubleheader at 11:30/2am. Pete Gillen as the analyst is a bonus. Before ESPN made its own tournaments this was one of the best; Cincinnati beat Duke in the final one year, I want to say in 2003.

    10) Odd fact of the day: Patriots are only NFL team that have no offensive players who were first round draft picks.

    9) Since 1992, either Brett Favre/Aaron Rodgers started every Packer-Bear game; during that time, Chicago started 15 different QBs. Green Bay is retiring Favre's #4 jersey tonight at Lambeau Field.

    8) NCAA finally cleared Kansas freshman Check Diallo to start playing; he will make his Jayhawks' debut Tuesday against Loyola, Md. Kansas won the tourney out in Maui last night; Diallo will only make them better.

    7) Bill Walton quoted Eleanor Roosevelt during the St John's-Chaminade game on Maui yesterday: "Do something every day that scares you." Walton is a gem, but having him work four games in two days is a lot. He is best in smaller doses.

    6) Baylor QB Jarrett Stidham broke his ankle, is second Baylor QB to be out for the year; 3rd-stringer Johnson played well in relief at Oklahoma State Saturday, now plays against TCU Friday, making his first college start. I'm guessing the 4th-string QB is a walk-on, so Johnson better stay healthy.

    5) NFL QB comings/goings: Ravens signed Jimmy Clausen, released by Chicago on Monday, Broncos signed Christian Ponder, whose wife is on ESPN. Meanwhile, the Texans gave Ryan Mallett $1.47M just to go away and no one has signed him. In this day and age, being an unemployed NFL QB is an incredible indictment.

    4) There are five sets of brothers who are Division I basketball coaches:
-- Bobby and Danny Hurley (Arizona State/URI)
-- Bryce and Scott Drew (Valparaiso/Baylor)
    -- James and Joe Jones (Yale/Boston U)
-- Sean and Archie Miller (Arizona/Dayton)
-- Ron and Don Verlin (Pacific/Idaho)

    3) Fan Duel sponsored a college basketball tournament in Brooklyn this week that Marquette won; too bad New York State ruled earlier this month that Fan Duel can't do business in New York anymore. Guess they'll need a new sponsor next year.

    2) At some point, the nitwits who run the Cleveland Browns will realize that Austin Davis is their best QB. Davis started eight games for the Rams LY, threw 12 TDs with nine INTs, went 3-5 as the starter. He would do well if they gave him a chance.

    1) If you owned the Dodgers, and had a $300M payroll, would you hire a manager who has never managed before? Just strikes me as strange.

Iowa is 3-0 after winning by 28 at Marquette in last game last Thursday; Hawkeyes are shooting 41.9% from arc- their bench plays 5th-most time in country so far. Dayton is 3-0, hammering Alabama by 32, winning by 3 over Wm & Mary squad that won at NC State. Flyers have turned ball over 23.7% of time- they're a young team that is playing bench a lot.

          Atlantis tournament
Gonzaga hammered its first three opponents; 80-64 win over Washington yesterday was closest game they've had- it was 44-27 at half, stress-free game. Texas A&M beat old rival Texas 83-80 yesterday in foulfest where both teams took 37 FTs. Aggies start three seniors; they used two guys more than 24:00. Aggies played later in day; not sure if that hurts or not.

UConn beat Syracuse by 8 last time former Big East rivals played, in '13; they whacked Michigan by 14 yesterday, they're starting two seniors, two juniors. Syracuse isn't as big as usual but they've got better shooters now- they made 14-28 from arc yesterday in easy win over Charlotte. Orangemen aren't deep; three guys played 32+ minutes yesterday.

Huskies are starting four freshman, are one of 10 youngest teams in country- they played ten guys 13+ minutes in loss to Gonzaga. UC-Irvine is 4-0 with 61-60 OT win at UCF its best win; their defensive eFG% is 32.4, #1 in country thanks to 7-6 C Ndiaye. Anteater foes are shooting 22.8% from arc. Boise State lost at Montana/Arizona; their only D-I win is Northern Arizona. Broncos are shooting 62.6% inside arc, but a 7-6 center will bring that down. Mountain West favorites are 9-9.

Boston College allowed 54 ppg in 3-0 start; best win was over Harvard, #177 in country- its 7th-easiest schedule in country so far; Eagles have a young team that is shooting 41.8% from arc so far. Michigan State won first four games, beating Kansas 79-73 on a neutral floor; Spartans don't force lot of turnovers; they're a top 10 rebounding team.

Providence plays almost all frosh/sophs except for star G Dunn, one of best players in country; Friars are forcing turnovers 25.4% of time, have beaten Illinois, Harvard, NJIT, a decent schedule. Evansville is 3-0 even though opponents are shooting 59% inside arc against them. Purple Aces won last game 93-88 over Belmont, outscoring Bruins 25-9 on line.

          Brooklyn tournament
Georgia Tech was off to 3-0 start until getting upset 69-68 in last game by 15-point dog East Tennessee State; Tech is #15 in experience in US- they're shooting 58% inside arc. Arkansas allowed 77 ppg in its 2-1 start, losing 88-80 to Akron, best team they've played. Hogs are shooting 44% from arc, but this will be their first game away from home.

          Orleans Arena tournament
West Virginia is off to 4-0 start, but only non-stiff they've beaten was an 11-point win over James Madison, a team that beat Richmond. WVa has forced turnovers 31.6% of time; Spiders are #23 at protecting ball, so this will be interesting matchup, though Richmond figures to get killed on the boards. Richmond won last three games, upsetting Wake Forest 91-82.

Cal Bears are 4-0, scoring 85.3 ppg; best win was over UCSB by 18; Cal doesn't force lot of turnovers, but they rebound well- teams are shooting just 37.8% inside arc against them. San Diego State is 3-2 with best win over Illinois State; they can be shaky on offese. Pac-12 teams are 4-0 vs Mountain West teams, but MW squads covered three of those four.
