Top 25 roundup: LSU phenom sparkles in loss

Freshman Ben Simmons had a monster game, but it was the shot he didn't take that made the difference in No. 22 LSU's 81-80 loss to Marquette in the semifinals of the FanDuel Legends Classic on Monday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Simmons had given LSU its first lead of the game with 21.5 seconds to go, driving the lane to put the Tigers up 80-79. But LSU's Josh Gray fouled Marquette's Jajuan Johnson, who hit both free throws with 10.8 seconds left.

LSU brought the ball down the court quickly, but Simmons passed up a chance to attempt the winning shot and kicked it instead to Jalyn Patterson, who missed a long 3-pointer.

Despite the loss, Simmons gave the fans and NBA scouts their money's worth with 21 points, 20 rebounds, seven assists and two blocks.

No. 3 Michigan State 89, Eastern Michigan 65

Denzel Valentine approached another triple-double and five players reached double figures as the Spartans cruised to an easy win.

Valentine compiled 12 points, nine rebounds and seven assists before he was removed with 5:47 remaining.

Valentine had 29 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists against Kansas last week.

No. 4 Iowa State 83, Chattanooga 63

The Cyclones, built to win games with a devastating offense, relied on the 3-point shot to make easy work of the Mocs.

Iowa State hit 14 3-pointers and shot 48.3 percent from beyond the arc to cruise to their third straight win to open the season.

Naz Mitrou-Long led the way with 24 points while draining six 3s. Forward Georges Niang scored 19 points and guard Monte Morris had 14 points and 10 assists.

No. 5 Kansas 123, Chaminade 72

Wayne Selden Jr. and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk scored 18 points each, and the Jayhawks connected on 15 3-pointers.

The Jayhawks' 123 points were the most in coach Bill Self's 432 games with the Jayhawks.

The Jayhawks took control immediately after, going on a 20-3 run helped by four 3-pointers from Selden, who made two and one from Mykhailiuk and Devonte' Graham.

No. 9 North Carolina 80, Northwestern 69

The Tar Heels shook off a loss in its last game to soundly defeat the Wildcats.

The Tar Heels will face Kansas State in the championship game Tuesday night after K-State defeated Missouri 66-42 in the first semifinal.

The Tar Heels blew open a close game with a 23-5 run early in the second half. North Carolina had four players in double figures, including forward Justin Jackson with 19 points.

Wake Forest 82, No. 13 Indiana 78

Bryant Crawford scored on a driving layup with 3.2 seconds left to break a tie and lead the Demon Deacons over the Hoosiers.

With the score tied at 78 with 13.1 seconds remaining, Wake Forest inbounded the ball and Crawford, a guard, drove the right side of the lane before banking in a driving shot.

After a timeout, Indiana' forward Collin Hartman attempted a fullcourt pass that was intercepted. Wake Forest was fouled and forward John Collins made a pair of free throws with 0.7 seconds to play.

No. 14 Cal 89, Sam Houston State 63

Jaylen Brown posted his second double-double of the season to lead the Bears over the visiting Bearkats.

Brown had 18 points, 11 rebounds and four assists for Cal. Jordan Mathews also scored 18 points.

Tyrone Walker had 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

No. 19 Vanderbilt 92, St. John's 55

Luke Kornet scored 13 points to lead the Commodores.

Kornet was one of four players in double figures for the Commodores.

Jeff Roberson recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds while Camron Justice scored 11 points.

No. 23 Xavier 78, Northern Kentucky 66

Trevon Bluiett scored 14 points to go along with a career-high 16 rebounds and forward James Farr added 13 points, lifting the Musketeers.

The Musketeers were coming off a victory at then-No. 24 Michigan and looked sharp again Monday with six players scoring in double figures.

Junior forward Jalen Reynolds had five rebounds and his first career 3-pointer in the first five minutes as Xavier took control. He finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

-- Warriors 111, Lakers 77-- How did the Lakers get this bad? Golden State is now 16-0 and appears to be a juggernaut.

-- Marquette 78, Arizona State 73 OT-- Four Sun Devils fouled out.

-- Indiana Hoosiers lost to Wake Forest on Maui Monday; apparently they had a practice after they lost. Way to take the fun out of the trip, coach.

-- Louisiana Tech 82, Ohio State 74-- Buckeyes lost to Tex-Arlington last week.

-- Kansas 92, UCLA 73-- Game was 59-33 at the half. 59. to. 33.

-- My favorite two college basketball analysts on TV: Bill Raftery, Doug Gottlieb. ESPN let both of them walk. Not a good move, especially with Gottlieb- Raftery wanted to do Big East games, so he went to FS1 with the Big East.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Top 8, bottom 5 teams in NFL.......

32) Browns-- Johnny Manziel is either the dumbest person on this planet, or angling for a trade to the Cowboys. I'm thinking he'd like to go back to Texas.

31) 49ers-- Colin Kaepernick is 27-20 as an NFL starter; he led the Niners to a Super Bowl three years ago, but they're getting rid of him. Seems like once they got their new publicly funded stadium, management stopped caring.

30) Chargers-- In last eight games, San Diego started one drive in enemy territory; their opponents started 15. Hard to win that way. They have a QB heading nto his mid-30's and don't know where they'll be playing home games next year.

29) Saints-- Allowing 31.5 ppg; already fired their defensive coordinator. Struggling team with an aging star QB, lot like the Chargers.

28) Rams-- 25% of the NFL is 4-6; Rams probably aren't the worst of the eight, but their offense is so totally fouled up, despite having two legit weapons in Gurley and Austin. This isn't all Foles' fault; guy had 27 TDs, two INTs two years ago- if you protect him at all and give him a decent tight end, he will be a productive player.

As if this season couldn't get worse, WR Stedman Bailey was shot twice ithis week, in the head and hip; he is currently under a 4-game suspenion, so he was in Florida. Get well soon and stay the hell out of south Florida.

8) Seahawks-- Was tempted to put surging Chiefs into this slot, but have feeling that Seattle will play better with the finish line in sight.

7) Broncos-- I picked against Denver last week, but Osweiler did just enough to win in Chicago, in his first NFL start; he managed the game well and Chicago was awful in the red zone on offense. Broncos-Patriots this week; should be interesting.

6) Vikings-- Mike Zimmer didn't get an NFL head coaching job until he was 58; Bruce Arians didn't get one until he was 60. NFL teams aren't hiring the right people.

5) Packers-- Aaron Rodgers is really, really good; amazing that he didn't get a college scholarship out of high school. His coach at Cal, Jeff Tedford was a head coach in the CFL this year but wants to get back in the college game. Someone should hire him.

4) Bengals-- Curious to see the reaction Bengals get from the home crowd this week, in a should-win game against the Rams. They booed Andy Dalton at the All-Star Game this summer, at the celebrity softball game. It is a cynical fanbase.

3) Cardinals-- I enjoy coach Arians' aggressive approach; they throw the ball down the field and they blitz, even when they're ahead. They play to win the game.

2) Panthers-- In the 49 years of the Super Bowl era, 15 teams have been 10-0; nine of those teams made the Super Bowl- they went 6-3 in those games. Carolina does not have great receivers; Newton is making them look better than they are.

1) Patriots-- 15 of 32 NFL teams are 5-5 or 4-6; not sure if New England is that good or if the league just stinks. 86 days until pitchers and catchers report. 112 days until the NCAA tournament starts. Don't forget, 2016 is a leap year.

Notes for Wednesday's games..........

LaSalle won its last nine games with Penn, last four by 11+ points; they are 3-0 this year, beating three stiffs by 2-13-8 points- this is their first road game, albeit still in Philly. Penn lost by 37 at Washington Saturday after winning its first three games; Quakers are shooting only 26.9% on arc. Explorers played four starters 30:00+ in Monday night's 83-75 win.

Northridge is 1-3 vs D-I teams, losing by 12-35 in its two true road tilts. Teams are shooting 44.8% from arc vs Matadors, who are starting three freshmen. LMU lost last two D-I games by 24-8 points, their only two road games. Lions start four juniors and a soph. Big West road underdogs are 5-4 vs spread. WCC home favorites are 5-3 vs spread.

UCSB lost last two games to Pac-12 teams by 18-12 points; Gauchos are starting three seniors- they split two road games, winning at Omaha by a point. San Francisco is 3-1, beating Big West's Riverside 58-57 last game; Dons allowed 55.5 ppg in winning their two home games. WCC home favorites are 5-3 vs spread; Big West road underdogs are 5-4 vs spread.

Atlantis tournament
Washington's best player transferred to Gonzaga last spring- he won't be eligible until next year, but it makes this game more interesting. Huskies have almost whole new team, are 3-0, with win over Texas in Japan and two wins over stiffs- they have #4 eFG% defense in country. Gonzaga is 2-0, beating couple of stiffs by 31-37 points- this game is at noon ET, which makes it 9am PT for these two schools from Washington.

Texas A&M-Texas don't play anymore since Aggies bolted to SEC; they are 4-0 vs 9th-easiest schedule in country- Aggies start two sophs and a freshman. Longhorns won their only game since coming back from loss to Washington in Japan. Big X underdogs are 2-1 vs spread; SEC favorites are 7-2 against spread on neutral floors.

Michigan lost last game at home to Xavier by 16; they're 2-1 even though they're shooting 46% from arc. Wolverines are starting two sophs, couple juniors. UConn scored 89.3 ppg in beating three stiffs by 44-19-25 pts; Huskies blocked 23.5% of opponents' shots so far (#1 in US). Favorites from AAC are 9-3 vs spread. Big 14 underdogs are 3-2 vs spread.

Maui Classic (teams playing third day in row)
UNLV's frosh C Zimmerman sat yesterday's game out; he is expected to play here; Rebels are shooting only 27% from arc. Indiana scored 85.4 ppg in 4-1 start, beating St John's by 10 yesterday- they shot 63-67% inside arc in two games this week. UNLV's interior defense will be more of a challenge. Mountain West underdogs are 7-3 against the spread.

Wake Forest allowed 83 ppg in 3-2 start; they used three guys 30+ last two days- their best player is out, but guys on ESPN again hinted that two suspended players could be active for today. UCLA was down 26 at half (59-33) last nite; they're 3-2, turning ball over 21.3% of time. Alford played 73:00 in first two games. Pac-12 favorites are 16-12 vs spread.

Top 25 roundup: NC State downs LSU in OT

In a rematch of last year's Round of 64 NCAA Tournament game, North Carolina State broke open a close game late in overtime to earn an 83-72 victory over No. 22 LSU in the consolation game of the Fanduel Legends Classic in Brooklyn on Tuesday.

Anthony Barber went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds to secure the win. Barber led the Wolfpack (3-2) with 20 points. Abdul-Malik Abu added 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Tim Quarterman had 19 points to pace LSU (3-2). Ben Simmons finished with 16 rebounds and 10 assists, but went 1-for-6 from the floor and 2-for-5 from the free throw line to finish with four points.

No. 1 Kentucky 82, Boston University 62

Senior forward Alex Poythress came off the bench to produce 14 points and 10 rebounds as No. 1 Kentucky cruised past Boston University at Lexington, Ky.

Freshman forward Skal Labissiere was tops in scoring with 16 points for the Wildcats (5-0). Sophomore point guard Tyler Ulis had 15 points, followed by freshmen guards Jamal Murray and Isaiah Briscoe with 12 and 11, respectively.

Guard John Papale scored 15 points to lead the Terriers (2-3).

No. 2 Maryland 77, Illinois State 66

Guard Rasheed Sulaimon scored 18 points as No. 2 Maryland fended off a serious challenge from Illinois State, pulling away in the final five minutes for the win in the Cancun Challenge semifinals.

Point guard Melo Trimble added 15 points and seven assists, while forward Damonte Dodd contributed 13 points. The Terrapins (4-0) trailed 57-52 lead with 7:13 remaining before scoring 10 of the next 11 points to regain the advantage for good.

Forward MiKyle McIntosh scored 17 points to lead the Redbirds (2-3). Guard Paris Lee added 15.

No. 5 Kansas 92, UCLA 73

Senior forward Perry Ellis scored 24 points as No. 5 Kansas rolled past UCLA in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational at Lahaina Civic Center.

The victory places the Jayhawks (3-1) into Wednesday's championship game against No. 19 Vanderbilt. Kansas hasn't won the Maui Invitational since 1996 -- finishing third in 2001, seventh in 2005 and was runner-up in 2011.

Junior guard Isaac Hamilton scored 19 points for UCLA (3-2).

No. 7 Oklahoma 96, Incarnate Word 63

Buddy Hield scored 22 points as No. 7 Oklahoma routed Incarnate Word at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla.

Ryan Spangler added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Sooners (3-0), who led by as many as 43 points.

Jontrell Walker led Incarnate Word (2-2) with 16 points.

No. 9 North Carolina 80, Kansas State 70

Forward Justin Jackson scored 22 points as No. 9 North Carolina outscored Kansas State 17-2 in the final 3:28 to land the victory in the championship game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic at Sprint Center.

Forward Kennedy Meeks with 15 added 15 points for the Tar Heels (5-1). Guard Theo Pinson scored 11 points and forward Brice Johnson had 10.

Freshman guard Kamau Stokes who scored a career-high 24 points for Kansas State (4-1). Guard Justin Edwards added 10 points.

No. 13 Indiana 83, St. John's 73

Yogi Farrell scored 22 points and dished out eight assists to power No. 13 Indiana over St. John's in consolation bracket play in the Maui Invitational at Lahaina Civic Center in Maui, Hawaii.

Thomas Bryant had 19 points and Troy Williams, who had a team-high 16 points in Monday's loss to Wake Forest in the tournament's first round, finished with seven points and nine rebounds for Indiana (4-1). James Blackmon contributed 12 points but gave the ball away four times for the Hoosiers, who won despite committing 16 turnovers.

Ron Mvouika and Federico Mussini paced St. John's (3-2) with 17 points each.

No. 19 Vanderbilt 86, Wake Forest 64

Center Damian Jones and point guard Wade Baldwin scored 17 points apiece to lead No. 19 Vanderbilt past Wake Forest in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center in Maui, Hawaii.

Power forward Jeff Roberson added 12 points for the Commodores (5-0), who led by 15 at halftime and extended the margin to 24 in the second half. Jones added a game-high 10 rebounds.

Freshman guard Bryant Crawford scored 15 points and freshman power forward John Collins added 14 for the Demon Deacons (3-2).

No. 24 Cincinnati 64, Southeastern Louisiana 49

In their first game of the season as a ranked team, No. 24 Cincinnati came out flat, but was able to fend off pesky Southeastern Louisiana.

Troy Caupain had 15 points, with his two threes down the stretch playing a large role in creating some breathing room for the Bearcats. Gary Clark led the way with eight rebounds, and also contributed 12 points for Cincinnati (5-0).

Zay Jackson had 15 points while Joshua Filmore added 12 for the Lions (1-4).

Kentucky on top of men's AP poll again
November 23, 2015

Kentucky, its star-filled roster decimated by the NBA draft, didn't wait long to get back to the top of The Associated Press poll.

The Wildcats, who again have a lineup full of freshmen who were high school All-Americans, went from second to No. 1 on Monday. The move was made possible by their convincing win over then-No. 5 Duke in the Champions Classic and North Carolina's loss to Northern Iowa that ended the Tar Heels' two-week run on top.

This is Kentucky's 114th week at No. 1 since the poll began in 1949. The Wildcats, who were No. 1 every week last season, trail only UCLA at 134 weeks and Duke at 127. The Tar Heels had tied Kentucky on the all-time list with this season's two weeks at No. 1.

Those are the only four schools to have been ranked No. 1 for at least 100 weeks.

HELLO MIAMI: The No. 15 Hurricanes had an impressive jump into this week's poll. Their title at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off included wins over Utah and Butler and made them the only school this season to beat more than one ranked opponent.

Miami became the 17th team since the poll expanded to 25 in 1989-90 to jump in from unranked to No. 15 or better. The last school to do it was Villanova, which jumped in at No. 14 early in the 2012-13 season.

The biggest jump was Kansas' move from unranked to No. 5 in November 1989. The Jayhawks knocked off No. 1 UNLV, No. 2 LSU and No. 25 St. John's in winning the Preseason NIT.

The Hurricanes were ranked for five weeks last season, reaching as high as No. 15.

OTHER NEWCOMERS: No. 23 Xavier and No. 25 Texas A&M are both back in the rankings for the first time since 2011-12. The Musketeers were ranked for the first seven polls, reaching as high as No. 8, while the Aggies were in the first six polls, reaching as high as 19th.

Cincinnati was last ranked for the final 10 polls of 2013-14, and the Bearcats were as high as No. 7. SMU was ranked for nine weeks last season, including the last seven. The Mustangs were ranked as high as 18th.

BEATING NO. 1: Northern Iowa's 71-67 victory over North Carolina was the Panthers' second win over a No. 1 team.

In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Northern Iowa shocked the sport with a 69-67 victory over then-No. 1 Kansas in the second round.

It's hard to forget who hit the deciding 3-pointer for the Panthers: Ali Farokhmanesh.

CONFERENCE CALL: With Miami moving into the poll, the Atlantic Coast Conference leads the way with five teams in the Top 25. The Big Ten - which has No. 2 Maryland and No. 3 Michigan State - and the Big 12 have four each. The Southeastern Conference, the Pac-12 and the American Athletic Conference have three each. The American Athletic Conference had two of the week's four newcomers in Cincinnati and SMU.

SO LONG: Of the four teams that dropped out of the rankings, Utah had the longest streak at 18 consecutive weeks. Baylor was next at 15 weeks, while Butler was at 10 and Michigan two.

DOUBLE-RANKED GAMES: Thanksgiving week usually means a number of matchups between ranked teams in holiday tournaments.

The Maui Invitational could have a semifinal of No. 13 Indiana facing No. 19 Vanderbilt. The winner could get No. 5 Kansas in Wednesday's title game.

The Battle 4 Atlantis could have a semifinal of No. 25 Texas A&M and No. 18 Connecticut, with the winner possibly facing No. 10 Gonzaga in the championship game on Friday.

The Advocare Invitational in Orlando, Florida, could have a No. 23 Xavier-No. 20 Wichita State matchup in the semifinals, with No. 17 Notre Dame a possible opponent for the winner in Saturday's championship game.

The DIRECTV Wooden Legacy at Fullerton, California, could have a championship game between No. 3 Michigan State and No. 11 Arizona on Sunday.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.......

13) I watch the Miami Marlins play a lot; Giancarlo Stanton is on my fantasy team; was stunned when I read Tuesday that the Marlins fired Tommy Hutton as their TV analyst, after 19 years with the team. Why?

Hutton is smart, funny, fair, a friendly voice on a summer night, working for a team that is incredibly dysfunctional. Hope he finds another job on TV.

12) Al Avila is Executive VP/GM of the Detroit Tigers; his son is Alex Avila, who just signed a free agent deal with the White Sox, after seven years with Detroit. Says on Tigers' website that Al Avila is still married to Yamile Avila, who is Alex' mom.

I know lot of couples, where if the dad cut the son, he'd be spending Thanksgiving weekend sleeping on the couch. I'm just sayin'.....

11) Alaskan Shootout is great; a live college basketball doubleheader at 11:30/2am. Pete Gillen as the analyst is a bonus. Before ESPN made its own tournaments this was one of the best; Cincinnati beat Duke in the final one year, I want to say in 2003.

10) Odd fact of the day: Patriots are only NFL team that have no offensive players who were first round draft picks.

9) Since 1992, either Brett Favre/Aaron Rodgers started every Packer-Bear game; during that time, Chicago started 15 different QBs. Green Bay is retiring Favre's #4 jersey tonight at Lambeau Field.

8) NCAA finally cleared Kansas freshman Check Diallo to start playing; he will make his Jayhawks' debut Tuesday against Loyola, Md. Kansas won the tourney out in Maui last night; Diallo will only make them better.

7) Bill Walton quoted Eleanor Roosevelt during the St John's-Chaminade game on Maui yesterday: "Do something every day that scares you." Walton is a gem, but having him work four games in two days is a lot. He is best in smaller doses.

6) Baylor QB Jarrett Stidham broke his ankle, is second Baylor QB to be out for the year; 3rd-stringer Johnson played well in relief at Oklahoma State Saturday, now plays against TCU Friday, making his first college start. I'm guessing the 4th-string QB is a walk-on, so Johnson better stay healthy.

5) NFL QB comings/goings: Ravens signed Jimmy Clausen, released by Chicago on Monday, Broncos signed Christian Ponder, whose wife is on ESPN. Meanwhile, the Texans gave Ryan Mallett $1.47M just to go away and no one has signed him. In this day and age, being an unemployed NFL QB is an incredible indictment.

4) There are five sets of brothers who are Division I basketball coaches:

3) Fan Duel sponsored a college basketball tournament in Brooklyn this week that Marquette won; too bad New York State ruled earlier this month that Fan Duel can't do business in New York anymore. Guess they'll need a new sponsor next year.

2) At some point, the nitwits who run the Cleveland Browns will realize that Austin Davis is their best QB. Davis started eight games for the Rams LY, threw 12 TDs with nine INTs, went 3-5 as the starter. He would do well if they gave him a chance.

1) If you owned the Dodgers, and had a $300M payroll, would you hire a manager who has never managed before? Just strikes me as strange.
