Notes for Sunday's games..........
Boston College beat Harvard in OT LY, after losing previous six games with Crimson; Eagles beat couple of stiffs by 26-25 to open the season, with #10 eFG% defense in country. Harvard lost its PG for season this summer; they lost last two games by 12-6 points. Ivy League road dogs are 1-8 vs spread. ACC home favorites are 11-8 vs spread.
Valparaiso has all five starters back from LY; they're 5-0 already, with a 58-55 win at URI in only road game. Crusaders force turnovers 22.8% of time. Oregon won first three games, all at home- they beat Baylor by 7 in toughest game. Horizon road underdogs are 6-5 vs spread. Pac-12 home favorites are 13-8. Oregon is shooting 60% inside arc this month.
St Mary's beat Manhattan by 26 in only D-I game so far; Gaels haven't got a senior starter. Stanford lost by 15 at home to SMU last game; they'e got lot of new players. they're shooting 58.5% inside arc. Pac-12 dogs are 4-2 vs spread this month. WCC home favorites are 4-3. Favorites are 3-1 vs spread in Pac-12/WCC games so far this season.
Temple lost two of first three games but have played #18 schedule in the country; Owls protect ball well but are shooting just 38.7% inside arc-- they start three seniors. Utah scored 78.7 ppg in first three games, then got whacked by 24 by Miami; Utes start two sophs, two seniors and a junior. A-14 teams are 12-12 vs spread; Pac-12 teams are 20-10.
Miami's Rodriguez has family coming to games in Puerto Rico; 'canes are 4-0 already, with 16 points closest game. Miami starts four seniors and a junior- they've made 45.5% of 3's in four games. Butler beat Temple by 5 after hammering couple of stiffs; Bulldogs hold teams to 22.6% from arc, they've made 63.4% of 2-point shots in first three games.
George Mason has to be excited about playing state kingpin Virginia in finals of tourney; Patriots upset Ole Miss/banged-up Oklahoma State to get here; they're shooting just 51.8% from line this month- they've also lost to Mercer/Colgate, both worse teams than teams they beat. Virginia won first two tourney games by 25-35 points; Cavs are huge favorite.
Purdue won its first four games, all by 22+ points, but 3 of 4 were over stiffs; only one guy played more than 27:00 yesterday- big man Swanigan made his season debut. Florida pulled away from St Joe's to win by 11 Saturday, after beating two stiffs; they had 10 guys play 10+ minutes vs St Joe's. Big 14 teams are 12-15 vs spread; SEC teams are 14-10.
Wisconsin split its first four games, scoring 64 ppg in two losses, 70+ in both wins; Badgers have four new starters this year, they used only six guys more than 6:00 Friday. VCU won two of first three games, but lost to Duke Friday when they took press off in second half. A-14 underdogs are 4-3 vs spread; Big 14 favorites are 9-10 against the spread.
Duke came from behind to beat VCU 79-71 Friday after losing by 11 to Kentucky earlier in week; Blue Devils are rebounding 41.1% of missed shots. Georgetown beat Wisconsin by 10 after losing first two games to Radford/Maryland by total of six points; Hoyas play in MSG in league tourney every March. Duke won 18 of last 21 games at MSG.
Tulsa was down 19 with 11:20 vs Ohio U Friday, rallied to win 90-88 for third straight win- they upset Wichita State in previous game. Tulsa has nine seniors, is most experienced team in country. Indiana State protects ball well; they won last two games by 15-9 points after losing by hoop to IUPUI in opener. AAC favorites are 7-2 against the spread this month.
Hofstra made 10-22 from arc, upset Florida State by 5 Friday; they only have nine guys- three of them fouled out vs FSU, with Bernardi hitting 6-8 on arc and Green playing superior floor game. South Carolina won by 15 over DePaul Friday; Gamecocks start three seniors- they're grabbing 43.5% of their own missed shots- they're superior to Hofstra inside.
Wyoming lost only D-I game by 15 at Indiana State, its only road game- they beat couple stiffs at home. Cowboys will have fans at neutral site in Billings- teams play again Saturday in Laramie. Montana State beat San Jose State by 12 after losing twice in Hawai'i; Bobcats are turning ball over 23.9% of time. Big Sky underdogs are 5-9 vs spread.
Oakland had transportation trouble Saturday and got to Fort Collins late; Grizzlies beat Eastern Michigan by 10 in only game so far- they made 12 of 31 from arc. Oakland has dominant PG in Felder- he was 12-12 from line, had 12 assists vs EMU. Colorado State won first two games by 6-8 points, with win over Northern Iowa that looks even better today.
