    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

    -- Western Illinois 69, Wisconsin 67-- Leathernecks were a 26-point underdog.

-- Wm & Mary 85, NC State 68-- W&M coach Shaver is a UNC alum.

-- Miss State 106, Eastern Washington 88-- This was a really good game for thirty minutes, then EWU got tired and the Bulldogs kept running.

-- Cal-Sacramento 66, Arizona State 63-- Bobby Hurley era in Tempe gets off to a bad start; they were a 17.5-point favorite here.

-- Monmouth 84, UCLA 81 OT-- Bruins turned ball over 23 times (-16), they led by 13 points in second half. Monmouth will travel 8,681 miles before they play at home, on December 13 against Wagner.

-- Tenn-Chattanooga 92, Georgia 90 OT-- Good win for Southern Conference.

-- Pitt-Gonzaga game was cancelled at halftime because the floor was too slick at a military base in Japan- it was a 2-point game at the half.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Wrapping up a frentic Friday......

    13) Red Sox traded four prospects to San Diego for closer Craig Kimbrel; last year, Padres traded Cameron Maybin/Matt Wisler and others for Kimbrel; not 100% sure they know what they're doing, having changed managers in October, but one of the prospects is a real good defensive SS and they definitely want one of those. .

    12) Washington 77, Texas 71-- Bill Walton broadcasting from China had to have at least a few people at ESPN holding their breath about what politicial stands he would take during the game, but the game was fun-- play-by-play guy Roxy Bernstein kept Walton from getting himself or anyone else fired.

    11) Pac-12 is going to play a basketball game in China every year; lot of money to be made in China and the Pac-12 is affiliated with Nike because of Phil Knight/Oregon connection. Next year, Stanford of the Pac-12 is playing Harvard in China.

    10) I don't think NFL QBs should be protected by the rules once they cross the line of scrimmage; once you gain yardage, you're just another guy carrying the ball. If you don't want to get hit hard, don't run with the ball.

    9) Premature judgements: St John's, Wisconsin will struggle.

    8) USC 27, Colorado 24-- Buffs' QB got hurt, or this could've gone a different way; Colorado led 17-6 at one point. Trojans play better with interim head coaches.

    7) When Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders passed away, Mark Cuban lent his private plane to a group of coaches who were in LA at the time and wanted to go to the funeral. Lending a private plane is a pretty big tab, even for a rich guy.

    6) DeAndre Jordan has played eight years in the NBA; he's made more than 45.2% of his foul shots in one season. His career FG% is 66.5%, by the way. I just want him to try and shoot underhanded for one season, then I'll shut up about it.

    5) "Never attempt the shot you just faked." Basketball advice from Bill Walton.

    4) Former Arkansas coach John Pelphrey is a TV announcer now, left behind when Billy Donovan bolted Florida for Oklahoma City and the NBA- Pelphrey was one of his assistants in Gainesville the last few years. Have to listen to do a guy do more than one game before making judgements, but Pelphrey was pretty good last night.

    3) There are murmurs in the media that Blue Jays prefer Zach Greinke over David Price, as far as free agent pitchers go. My question is this: why would Greinke leave the pitcher-friendly NL to pitch against DHs again?

    2) Baylor 97, SF Austin 55-- This was supposed to be an interesting game; SFA was 61-8 the last couple years, one of the better mid-majors in the country. Excellent start to the season for the Big 12's Bears, who crushed the Lumberjacks here.

Montana also upset Boise State in Missoula, an interesting result out west.

    1) Best wishes to Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel, who is retiring after this season. Back in the spring, he was diagnosed with lymphoma, but he says he is OK with that now and just wants to enjoy life. We'll probably never know how much the current scenario has to do with his decision, but we wish him well no matter what.
