    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Thanks to all the men and women who defend our country, keep us safe; today is Veterans' Day and it is an important day to remember.

-- Colts' QB Andrew Luck is out 2-6 weeks with a lacerated kidney and abdominal tears. Apparently he threw seven passes after the injury Sunday.

-- If you're planning ahead, April 30 is Noah Syndergaard Garden Gnome night at Citi Field in NYC- make your plans accordingly.

-- I'm curious if all these Tues/Wed MAC football games help their recruiting?

-- Twins signed Korean 1B Byung-Ho Park who apparently is a very good hitter.

-- You can buy a lottery ticket in New York, but now you can't play daily fantasy sports- this is the kind of double standard that explains why a lot of people despise the government-- if they're not getting a piece of the income, it becomes illegal.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: How NFL teams do 1st drives of a half

I track how each team does on the first drive of each half, both offense/defense; here are some notes as the NFL season is roughly at the halfway mark..........

    13) 8-0 Bengals have scored 34 points (most in NFL) on their first drive of each game, averaging 53 yards per drive.

    12) Patriots have scored on their first drive of the second half in every game this year, five FGs, three TDs. In eight games, they've outscored opponents 67-38 on the first drive of each half, tied with Green Bay (59-30) for best mark in the league.

    11) Arizona (45-19), Oakland (48-20) have also done well on first drives; on Cardinals' foes' first drive of the game, they've run 41 plays for only 150 yards. Surprising that the Raiders are doing so well; Jack Del Rio could easily be Coach of the Year.

In their last three games, Raiders scored a TD on their first drive in five of six halves.

    10) 49ers' offense has been terrible early in games; its offense has been outscored 7-6 by the other team's defense on their first drive of a game.

    9) Houston is so dysfunctional they cut a QB who started four games and no one has picked him up, even though quality passers are scarce. Texans have run 39 plays for 140 yards on their first drive of a game, scoirng zero points. No bueno.

    8) Dick LeBeau works for the Titans now; they make good halftime adjustments. On opponents' first drive of the second half, Titan opponents have run 34 plays for 77 yards, scoring no points. Once the rookie QB gets some experience, this could be a team that makes a big jump next season.

    7) Rams had to sign Wes Welker; their offense is so totally dependent on Gurley and Austin, they're 20-90 on third down the last seven games, have gained only 76 yards on 28 plays on their first drive of a game. Too much pressure on the defense; if they can move the chains more now, it helps their field position and makes the team more balanced. Playing on a shorter field makes the game a lot easier.

    6) Buffalo has outscored opponents 23-3 on first drives of a game; their opponents gained only 92 yards on 34 plays on their first drives. Oddly, they've been bad on first drive of third quarter; their opponents gained 7.1 yards/play, scored four TDs and FG. Seems like they prepare for opponents better than they adjust at halftime.

    5) Eagles scored a TD on their first drive of the second half in four of last five games, and n fifth drive, they gained 49 yards before losing a fumble. They wore down Dallas' defense Sunday night, gaining 287 yards on 35 plays over their last five drives.

    4) Miami changed coaches after four games, because the defensive players weren't happy with their defensive scheme; in their first four games, Dolphins allowed three TDs and a FG (285 yards on 30 plays) on the first drive of a game.

Since the change, Miami allowed 158 yards on 27 plays, allowing one TD, one FG, so thats an improvement, maybe just because the players feel more invested now.

    3) Denver has been surprisingly bad on the first drive of a game, kicking two FGs on eight drives, gaining 197 yards on 45 plays (4.4 ypp).

    2) Teams are 6-0 the week after playing Carolina, both SU and against the spread; four of those six teams were favored.

    1) Not sure why this is true but it is, but teams are 0-8 against the spread the week after playing the Cardinals, winning only two games SU.

NBA Philadelphia 76ers - Toronto Raptors

            Recommendation: Raptors - 8

            Odds: 1.854

            Bookmaker: Pinnaclesports / Sportmarket

The spread seems a bit steep here at first sight, moreover the game is at Wells Fargo, Philly. Sixers will be the most pathetic team in the league for another season though (yes, even Lakers are better Smiley and this seems set in stone. Their coach Brett Brown still insist that his team can compete with anyone in the league (let’s take a minute and laugh at him) but when the talent and effort aren’t there, all is just wishful thinking. Sixers may welcome Nerlens Noel back in the squad tonight after injury but this doesn’t bother me too much, the guy is not showing any promise to fulfill his potential currently. Even the bright spot, rookie center Okafor, can’t help Philly too much. He records very nice stats for a rookie but this just doesn’t transfer directly in teams ratings.

Raptors suffered a setback after their shockingly good start to the season, or more like the reality hit them hard. It’s true though that Toronto’s last loss against Knicks was a bit harsh, coming after a very bad referee decision in the key possession (Carmelo Anthony was clearly out of bounds and it should have been Raptors ball). So Toronto will be angry mad and motivated on 100 % for victory, I just hope they escape some stupid backdoor cover. Carrol and Terence Ross are questionable again for tonight (both will likely miss the game in fact) but DeRozan and Kyle Lowry showed their old form against New York, so more of the same, please!
