    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)
six most popular picks in Week 9 season record: 27-26-2

    6) Giants, -2.5 (446)-- Bucs' WR Evans could light up the Giants' defense- W.

    5) Broncos -5 (456)-- Struggling Colts welcome an old friend back home- L.

    4) Rams +1.5 (461)-- Matchup of teams on the upswing- L.

    3) Eagles, -2.5 (508)-- Cowboys are 0-5 since Romo got hurt- W.

    2) Jets -6.5 (555)-- Jets get center Mangold back from an injury- L.

    1) Steelers -4 (706)-- Underdog covered all three Oakland road games- L
    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday......

    13) Bengals 31, Browns 10-- CBS execs have to be very nervous at thought of Super Bowl 50 with Cincinnati-Carolina, which easily could happen. That would be a fun game for hardcore fans to see, but not the ratings bonanza that the networks crave.

    12) Steelers 38, Raiders 35-- Pittsburgh gained 597 yards, forced four turnovers (+2) but lost Roethlisberger to another injury (foot) for at least a couple weeks, so Landry Jones is once again in the forefront. Oakland's two road losses are by 3-2 points.

    11) Jets 28, Jaguars 23-- Gang Green was +4 in turnovers, had 14-yard edge in field position; only one of their four TD drives was longer than 51 yards. In their five wins, Jets are +12 in turnovers; in three losses, they're -5. Jax scored three points in two red zone drives; Jets scored 21 points on their three.

    10) Vikings 21, Rams 18 OT-- Not only did Rams lose this game, I had to listen to Thom bleepin' Brennaman for 3.5 hours; what a pompous know-it-all, but he didn't know enough to tell us how big a factor the wind was in this game until the second quarter- he never mentioned that 33 of the 39 points in the game were scored by teams going left-to-right, or that Vikings' backup QB Shaun Hill was the Rams' starting QB for most of last season. But hey, his dad is famous so he has a good gig.

    9) Bills 33, Dolphins 17-- Buffalo ran ball for 266 yards, averaged 10.3 ypa and they did that despite allowing three sacks on 15 dropbacks. Bills-Jets Thursday night, so we will get the whole Rex-Jets things harped on endlessly. Mute button time.

    8) Titans 34, Saints 28 OT-- Tennessee had scored 36 points total in last four games, so of course Rob Ryan's defense gives up 34 to a team with a rookie QB that fired its head coach six days ago. Rex Ryan should be on TV being funny and Rob Ryan should be coaching high school ball somewhere in the Oklahoma panhandle.

    7) Patriots 27, Redskins 10-- This has nothing to do with football, but NBA players are wearing lower-cut sneakers these days. Do basketball players still get their ankles taped before practices/games?

When I was a kid, anyone who didn't get their ankles wrapped with at least an ace bandage before any practice/game got in big trouble. When I was coaching HS ball 15-20 years ago, not so much. Are sneakers made better now?

    6) Panthers 37, Packers 29-- Carolina has won 12 straight regular season games, with wins over Colts/Packers last two weeks, plus a win at Seattle, but much like with the Bengals, because Charlotte isn't a big market, the Panthers are undervalued. Newton is now 38-31 as an NFL starter-- did you know Atlanta had a DB named Cam Newton in 2005-06? You learn interesting little tidbits reading this space, don't you? :-)

    5) 49ers 17, Falcons 16-- Picked against Atlanta last week; think they're a tired team that desperately needs the bye week they're starting now. 49ers are 3-2 at home while allowing 15.2 ppg-- they're 0-4 on the road, allowing 36.8 ppg. Falcons lost three of last four games after a 5-0 start- win was 10-7 over the Zach Mettenberg-led Titans.

    4) Giants 32, Buccaneers 18-- Final score is misleading; NJ scored a TD on last play of game, as Bucs butchered the playground/lateral play. I've been touting Bucs' Mike Evans as one of the best WRs in league, but despite catching eight balls for 152 yards, he had several drops in key spots in this game that hurt the Tampa Bay cause.

    3) Colts 27, Broncos 24-- This has been a season with way more than usual coaching screwups. Colts led 17-0 in last 0:20 of first half and they punt the ball down the field, instead of out of bounds, so of course Denver runs it back for a TD. Had Indy lost this game, and Denver did tie it up twice, I wouldn't have blamed Jim Irsay if he fired the whole coaching staff after the game- the offensive coordinator is already gone.

    2) Eagles 33, Cowboys 27 OT-- Dallas banked tying FG off an upright with 0:02 left, but offense never got back on field. Happy birthday Sam Bradford; he threw walk-off TD to Jordan Matthews, as Dallas lost its sixth game in row. Wildly entertaining day with three overtime games; too bad the wrong team won in Minnesota.

    1) Odd Fact of the Day: Jets' QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has now beaten the Jaguars with five different teams, the first NFL QB to beat a team for five dfferent franchises.

Undefeated Baylor opens 4.5-point chalk against Oklahoma

The Bears (4-3 ATS) open as 4.5-point home faves when they host the Sooners (7-1 ATS).

Slowly but surely, the ranks of the unbeaten are starting to thin out in college football. Texas Christian and Michigan State took it on the chin in Week 10, and in a key game in Week 11, Baylor will put its perfect mark on the line against a surging Oklahoma squad.

The Bears (8-0 SU, 4-3 ATS) haven’t been as impressive against the oddsmakers these past two games, but they’ve managed to get the SU wins, nonetheless. Last Thursday, laying a hefty 17 points at Kansas State, Baylor hung on for a 31-24 victory.

Meanwhile, since their stunning loss at Texas, the Sooners (8-1 SU, 7-2 ATS) have mounted a 4-0 SU and ATS run, with the smallest margin of victory at 36 points. On Saturday, Oklahoma rolled Iowa State 52-16 as a 24.5-point favorite.

The Sooners are likely still smarting from a 48-14 home loss to Baylor last season. Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for Wynn Las Vegas, opened the Bears as 4.5-point chalk.

“The Sooners are flying right now, averaging 58 points a game over the last four since that loss to Texas,” Avello said. “Baylor’s freshman quarterback, Jarrett Stidham, was a concern for me going into that K-State game, and he’s still a concern due to his lack of experience.”

      Alabama (-7.5) at Mississippi State

Even with a stunning home loss to Mississippi back in Week 3, the Crimson Tide are right back in the middle of the four-team playoff picture, just where you’d expect them to be. Alabama (8-1 SU, 4-5 ATS) was expecting a stern test Saturday against visiting Louisiana State, but its defense was more than up to the task, with the Tide rolling 30-16 as a 7.5-point chalk.

Mississippi State (7-2 SU, 6-3 ATS) stumbled twice early in the season in the Southeastern Conference, but is trying to right the ship. The Bulldogs have won four in a row SU (3-1 ATS), including a 31-13 victory giving 7.5 points Friday night at Missouri.

Last year, Mississippi State went into this game 9-0 SU, but ‘Bama – a 10-point home favorite – stopped the Bulldogs, 25-20.

“Alabama seems to have put it all together, and at just the right time as we enter the home stretch,” Avello said. “Mississippi State has only two losses, but its schedule has been extremely soft, and beating this Alabama team has been a difficult chore. You have to go back to 2007 to find the Bulldogs’ last ‘W’ against the Tide.”

      Oregon at Stanford (-9)

Since a season-opening dud of a performance at Northwestern, Stanford has been tearing it up on the field and against the oddsmakers. The Cardinal (8-1 SU, 7-2 ATS) have gone 7-1 ATS during their eight-game winning streak, including a 42-10 ripping of Colorado on Saturday as a 14.5-point road fave.

Oregon (6-3 SU, 5-4 ATS) is just trying to salvage a disappointing season. To that end, the Ducks have won three in a row SU and ATS, dropping California 44-28 Saturday laying 3.5 points at home.

“Oregon fans have to be very happy over what they’ve seen the past two weeks,” Avello said. “The always offensive-minded Ducks put up almost 800 yards against Cal. We’ll see if that continues against the defensive-minded Cardinal.”

      Memphis at Houston (-4.5)

This contest was looking certain to be a battle of unbeatens in the American Athletic Conference, but Memphis soiled itself this past weekend. The Tigers (8-1 SU, 4-4-1 ATS), who last month pulled off a shocking upset of Mississippi, got shelled by Navy 45-20 Saturday as a 10-point home chalk.

Houston (9-0 SU, 6-3 ATS) held up its end of the bargain, but also struggled while fending off Cincinnati 33-30 giving 9 points at home.

“This game may have lost its appeal after the Memphis loss to Navy,” Avello said. “I really believed the BCS playoff committee had Memphis too high in the rankings at No. 13.”

NBA roundup: Jackson leads Trail Blazers' late rally

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Guard Reggie Jackson scored 26 fourth-quarter points to lead a furious rally, and the Detroit Pistons stormed past the Portland Trail Blazers 120-103 Sunday night at the Moda Center.

Detroit (5-1) outscored Portland 41-11 in the final period to overcome an 18-point third-quarter deficit and start 2-0 on its six-game road trip.

Jackson finished with a career-high 40 points, while Pistons center Andre Drummond scored a season-high 29 points and grabbed 27 rebounds.

Guard Damian Lillard collected 26 points and 11 assists for the Trail Blazers (4-3). Guard CJ McCollum scored 18 points, and forward Meyers Leonard added 17.

Portland shot 60.5 percent from the field in taking a 10-point lead into the second half. Lillard had 12 points and six assists at halftime. Guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope kept Detroit within range, scoring 11 of his 16 points in the second quarter. Drummond had 10 points and 12 boards by the break.

            Knicks 99, Lakers 95

NEW YORK -- In what may have been Kobe Bryant's final game at Madison Square Garden, the Lakers star won the crowd, but a late 3-pointer by Langston Galloway and tough defense in the final minutes made sure New York won the game for its first home victory of the season.

Galloway nailed a 3-pointer from the wing with two minutes remaining for a two-point New York lead, and the Knicks never trailed again.

Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with a game-high 24 points, 11 of them in the fourth quarter, on 8-for-20 shooting and also grabbed eight rebounds. Jose Calderon added 14 points, Robin Lopez had 14 points, 13 rebounds and four assists, and Galloway dropped in 14 points off the bench on 5-for-9 shooting.

Drawing a roar from the New York crowd on almost every shot attempt, the 37-year-old Bryant finished with a team-high 18 points on 6-of-18 shooting.

            Heat 96, Raptors 76

MIAMI -- Hassan Whiteside had 20 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks to lead Miami to a win over Toronto at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Whiteside, 26, outplayed Jonas Valanciunas, 23, in a battle of young centers. Valanciunas had 17 points and five rebounds, but he was held to just one point in the second half.

The Heat also got contributions from Chris Bosh (23 points, eight rebounds) and Dwyane Wade (12 points). Wade passed former Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen for 51st place on the NBA career scoring list.

Bosh is now 12-0 against the Raptors, his original NBA team.

            Cavaliers 101, Pacers 97

CLEVELAND – Kevin Love scored 22 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, including two big baskets in the game's final minute, and Cleveland extended its winning streak to six games with a victory against Indiana.

LeBron James had 29 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Cavs, while Tristan Thompson had 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Cleveland hasn't lost since opening night in Chicago at the buzzer.

Paul George scored 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Pacers, while Monta Ellis scored 25 points and Jordan Hill grabbed 11 rebounds. The Pacers had their own three-game winning streak snapped.

            Thunder 124, Suns 103

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Kevin Durant scored 32 points on 12-of-19 shooting, leading Oklahoma City to a victory over Phoenix that snapped the Thunder's three-game losing streak.

Durant added 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals, and he hit six of seven free throws.

Thunder guard Russell Westbrook finished with 21 points and 13 assists. Enes Kanter and Dion Waiters came off the bench to score 21 and 19 points, respectively, for Oklahoma City.

Los Angeles Clippers - Memphis Grizzlies

                  Recommendation: UNDER 199

                  Odds: 1.97

                  Bookmaker: Pinnaclesports / Sportmarket

Clippers and Memphis resume their hard-fought rivalry from the past 3-4 seasons tonight and I will be quite surprised if the game doesn’t have at least a pinch of play-off intensity and atmosphere in it, with the whole history between these 2 teams!

Clippers feel really sorry for themselves currently, after heavy close defeats against top rivals like Houston and GSW. Both games features some questionable situations and referee calls, gone mostly against Clipps, and Doc and his boys are angry at the world right now. So it will be fight for every ball from them but star point guard and floor general Chris Paul will likely miss the game again because of strained groin. His replacement is Doc’s son, the young Rivers, and he’s not up to the task really (albeit only a few players around the league could fill Paul’s boots in all honesty). So Clippers offense shouldn’t be so fluent tonight.

Memphis also has their share of problems, some of their performances were quite flat for a contending team. Rumours are flying in the air about possible Zach Randolph trade (he is questionable tonight btw) and the atmosphere in the team is not perfect according all reports. What can they do to turn it around? What else except relying to their trade mark, the grinding stuffing defense.

So we have two teams quite desperate for the win (or at least for a good stabile game to steady the ship), not really liking each other, to put it mildly. They’ve gone over this total line only 1 from 4 meetings last season and I strongly favour this trend to continue tonight.
