    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Football trends to ponder with Week 9 upon us..........

-- Tennessee Titans are 3-9 vs spread in last 12 games as a road underdog

-- Florida State is 2-5 vs spread in last seven tries as an underdog

-- Dallas is 0-5 since Romo got hurt, scoring two TDs on 30 drives last three games

-- Penn State won/covered five of last six games with Northwestern.

-- Carolina Panthers won their last eleven regular season games.

-- Since 2006, Navy is 23-9 against the spread as a road underdog.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.....

    13) Weirdness in Deroit, where the 1-7 Lions fired general manager Martin Mayhew and president Tom Lewand, who somehow lasted 20 years with the Lions even though the team never won a playoff game during that time. How can one organization be so completely inept? The next GM/coach will have a very easy act to follow.

    12) Indianapolis Colts fired OC Pep Hamilton, which is odd because the Colts scored 24.7 ppg in their last three games, plus Hamilton came from Stanford, where QB Andrew Luck went to college. Going to be a lot of changes in Indy this winter.

Can't remember a football season with so many coaches/execs losing their jobs during the season; people who foot the bill have very little patience these days.

    11) Harry Giles is widely thought of as the best high school basketball player in the country this year and he hasn't chosen a college yet. Now comes word he's torn the ACL in his right knee-- he previously tore multiple ligaments in his left knee.

Now comes the question everyone is thinking but no one will say out loud: Do we really want this kid, who will spend the next year re-habbing his knee, then if he does well, will almost surely bolt to the NBA? If his knee doesn't bounce back, you're stuck with a kid you may not really want. Dicey situation.

Oddly enough, the kid is announcing his college choice today at noon.

    10) Another question that needs to be asked: how much basketball is too much? A young kid needs down time, he needs to get stronger, more mature-- playing all year is simply too much for some kids. Less games, more practice is a better idea.

    9) Sometimes, following unintended consequences of an event can be fun; example #1, instant replay in baseball is going to cause a resurgence in sliding practice, because when a guy slides into a base, if he comes off the base for a split-second and a fielder keeps the glove on him, he will be out. Players have to slide better; no one thought that would become more important because of instant replay.

Example #2: Chattanooga loses its basketball coach because Texas fired theirs; it was said one of the few jobs Shaka Smart would leave VCU for was a big-money school like Texas, so when the Longhorns surprisingly fired Rick Barnes after 17 years, Smart took the job, leaving behind a solid program at VCU.

Enter Will Wade, the Chattanooga head coach who had been one of Smart's assistants at VCU; he had turned down other jobs, but people knew the one job he would never turn down would be VCU. So Smart left for Texas surprisingly, Wade left for VCU and the Moccasins were looking for a new coach, all because the Texas AD (who has since been fired himself) fired Barnes, who has been a very good coach.

    8) SEC basketball scheduling has changed; teams will all play each other once, plus each team has three teams they will play twice each, every season. Kentucky's three teams are Vandy-Tennessee-Florida; lucky them- they get to lose an extra game every year, although playing Kentucky at home every year guarantees one extra sellout every other year. Well, at least until coach Calipari leaves Lexington.

    7) NFL teams are 23-47 (47.3%) on 2-point plays this year; they were at 48.1% the last five years combined. Would like seeing one team go for two every time they scored a TD, just to see what happened, as long as it wasn't the Rams who did it.

    6) ESPN ran a documentary on the Bill McCartney/Colorado football teams from the late 80's; they played in the Orange Bowl two years in a row. Weird to see those clips and think now, the Orange Bowl doesn't exist- thats where the Miami Marlins' new baseball stadium currently sits. Very good documentary, by the way.

    5) NBA League Pass is fun to have, especially before college hoop gets into full swing; the team I want to watch as much as possible this year, just for entertaining value, is the Minnesota Timberwolves. Enjoy watching Ricky Rubio; they've gotten better.

    4) Denver Broncos traded for TE Vernon Davis; not many NFL players get traded during the season. Curious to see how much of an impact he will make; he hadn't done much for the 49ers the last three years.

    3) College basketball rule change: coaches cannot call live-ball timeouts anymore. If a player gets trapped and the coach is standing next to the ref, he can't bail his player out. Will help pressing teams- with the new 30-second clock, more teams might press.

    2) People can be jerks: Bengals' QB Andy Dalton played in the celebrity softball game this summer in Cincinnati at the baseball All-Star Game-- he got booed when he came to bat, despite having a 40-27-1 career record with the Bengals, not exactly one of the NFL's more storied franchises.

Why did the hometown fans boo? Dalton is 0-4 in the playoffs, so the one thing I'm rooting for this winter is for the Bengals to win a playoff game, just so the jerks will go away and Dalton can be accepted for the good player that he is.

    1) Baylor 31, Kansas State 24-- Game wasn't really that close; freshman QB Stitham threw for 419 yards in his first college start. Baylor doesn't have a QB problem, but they will next spring, when Seth Russell is healthy again.

Magic C Vucevic sidelined with bone bruise

Orlando Magic center Nik Vucevic suffered a bone bruise on his right knee during Wednesday night's game against the Houston Rockets.

An MRI confirmed the extent of the injury that occurred in the second half of the Magic's 119-114 overtime loss to Rockets. The team said Thursday that Vucevic's return will hinge on his recovery while undergoing treatment.

The 7-foot Vucevic will miss the Magic's home game on Friday night against the Toronto Raptors. And the team will miss his presence. He is averaging 15.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.4 blocked shots and 2.0 assists in five games this season.

Lakers still searching for first ATS win

The Los Angeles Lakers have a real opportunity for the first win straight up and against the spread when the visit the equally poor Brooklyn Nets Friday evening.

The Lakers are one of two teams that have yet to covers a spread thus far in the campaign (0-4 ATS) and presently tabbed as 3-point road dogs at the Nets.

Brooklyn won both meetings with the Lakers last season and went 1-0-1 ATS in the process.

If the line holds, it will mark the second time that the Lakers were road underdogs this season. They closed as 7-point pups at the Sacramento Kings and lost 132-114 back on Oct. 30.
