    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Good card of NBA games last night; here are some of the highlights..........

-- Wizards 102, Spurs 99-- Parker tied game with a 3 with 0:07 left; Beal won it with his own 3 with 0:00.3 left. Spurs were down 19-2 early on. Good ballgame.

-- Raptors 103, Thunder 98-- Toronto took 39 FTs on road, Thunder took 14.

-- Rockets 119, Magic 114 OT-- Grab Evan Fournier for your fantasy team; he had 29 points for Orlando.

-- Bucks 91, 76ers 87-- Okafor was -4 in 35:00; every other Sixer starter was plus.

-- Cavaliers 96, Knicks 86-- Thompson had 10 points, 15 boards off the bench.

-- Warriors 112, Clippers 108-- NBA at its very best; seemed like a playoff game.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

    13) The glow of victory doesn't last too long in baseball: Alex Gordon turned down $13.75M for next year, is now a free agent, while Royals paid Alex Rios $1.5M to go away and paid Jeremy Guthrie $3.2M to disappear. Thanks for that title, though.

    12) Pitching coach Mike Maddux leaves Texas to be Dusty Baker's pitching coach in Washington, which means I'm now spared from hearing the A's TV guys make fun of Maddux for always putting his hand on the pitcher's shoulder when he visits the mound. Much better to be a pitching coach in the league with no DH.

    11) Underrated stat: Carolina Panthers won their last 11 regular season games.

    10) Many years ago, maybe the mid- 90's, I rode up an elevator in Madison Square Garden with the refs who were working the Knicks' game that night. I am 6-3 and all three guys were bigger than me-- we forget how tall NBA officials are. I'm wondering if there are college refs who couldn't go to the NBA because they're not tall enough.

    9) It is funny to me how close fans are to the action at NBA games; lot of those fans by the benches can actually talk to the coaches who walk in front of them during the action. It is probably surprising there has never been an incident between players/fans in that scenario. Don't think the big fight in Detroit way back when was by the bench.

    8) Pistons rookie Spencer Dinwiddie was eating a candy bar on the bench Tuesday night. During the game. While in uniform. Someone needs to tell him these games are on TV and very little happens that the cameras don't capture. Oy.

    7) North Carolina's star guard Marcus Paige broke a finger on his non-shooting (right) hand, will miss 3-4 weeks. College hoops starts a week from Friday.

    6) There have been 30 missed PATs in NFL thru eight weeks; in the last four years combined, there were 26 PATs missed, so moving the kick back has worked.

    5) Washington Huskies play Texas over in China next week; they play three games in the Bahamas later this month, but do not play a true road game until January 9, when they visit Pullman to play Washington State.

    4) Edmonton Oilers lost star rookie Connor McDavid for a long time with a broken collarbone. Kid had 12 points in his first 13 NHL games.

    3) Jared Cunningham plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers; he has a sneaker collection with 1,600+ pairs; where the bleep do you put 3,200+ sneakers?

    2) Remember Michael Graham, the Georgetown Hoya who was the enforcer on the Patrick Ewing-era teams? Apparently he won $1M in the DC Lottery-- he is on a TV commercial for the lottery that plays during Wizards games.

    1) St Thomas Aquinas 90, St John's 58-- This was one of those exhibition games, but Aquinas is a D-II school; St John's plays in the freakin' Big East. Could be a very long winter for rookie head coach Chris Mullin, who is building from scratch.

NBA roundup: Warriors hand Clippers first loss

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Stephen Curry's seventh 3-pointer of the game with 1:08 remaining produced the 17th and final lead change of the night, and the Golden State Warriors outlasted the Los Angeles Clippers 112-108 Wednesday night in a battle of the Western Conference's last two unbeaten teams.

The reigning NBA Player of the Week scored 13 consecutive Warriors points, including his straightaway 3-pointer that turned a one-point Golden State deficit into a 108-106 lead.

Curry and backcourt mate Klay Thompson added two late free throws apiece as the Warriors (5-0) recorded their eighth consecutive home win over their Southern California rivals. Golden State had won its first four games by a record total of 100 points.

Curry finished with a game-high 31 points, a majority of which came on his 7-for-11 accuracy from 3-point range. Harrison Barnes added 17 points and Thompson 16 for the Warriors. Chris Paul had 24 points and nine assists for the Clippers (4-1), and Blake Griffin contributed 23 points and 10 rebounds.

        Hawks 101, Nets 87

ATLANTA -- Center Al Horford scored 21 points and guard Dennis Schroder had 18 of his 20 points in the second half as Atlanta won its fifth consecutive game and dropped Brooklyn to 0-5.

Jeff Teague added 16 points and six assists for the Hawks, who at 5-1 are off to their best start since beginning 6-0 in 2010-2011.

Brook Lopez had 27 points and 11 rebounds for the Nets, who are off to their worst start since setting an NBA record by going 0-18 to open the 2009-10 season.

        Pacers 100, Celtics 98

INDIANAPOLIS -- Monta Ellis made two free throws with 13.7 seconds remaining, breaking a tie, and Indiana rallied to defeat Boston in Bankers' Life Fieldhouse.

Boston had an opportunity to win on its final possession, but Avery Bradley missed a 3-pointer, closely guarded by Paul George.

George, who had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Jordan Hill, who added 16 points, led a fourth-quarter comeback.

        Wizards 102, Spurs 99

WASHINGTON -- Bradley Beal had 25 points, including the winning 3-pointer with 0.3 of a second remaining, as Washington downed San Antonio.

John Wall contributed 17 points and 13 assists, with the last assist coming on Washington's final play. He fed Beal on the right wing shortly after Spurs guard Tony Parker made a 3-pointer to tie the score with 7.3 seconds left.

Otto Porter had 19 points for the Wizards, who led by 17 points in the opening minutes but needed a late rally for their second straight win over the Spurs.

        Bucks 91, 76ers 87

MILWAUKEE -- Khris Middleton hit a 3-pointer with 48.4 seconds left to lock down a Milwaukee victory over Philadelphia at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Middleton led Milwaukee with 21 points while Greg Monroe finished with 18 -- six of those coming in the final six minutes -- eight rebounds.

Jahlil Okafor scored 21 to pace the 76ers, who also got 17 from Nerlens Noel and 14 from Nik Stauskas.

        Raptors 103, Thunder 98

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Demar ReRozan scored 28 points to lead Toronto to a victory over Oklahoma City at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

DeRozan made 7 of 18 shots from the field to go with five rebounds and three assists. Kyle Lowry had 17 points and Jonas Valanciunas also finished with 17 points and added 11 rebounds as Toronto moved to 5-0.

Oklahoma City dropped its second straight game despite Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant putting up big numbers. Westbrook totaled 22 points, 16 assists and eight turnovers. Durant added 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

        Cavaliers 96, Knicks 86

CLEVELAND -- The sleeves apparently slowed LeBron James in the first half as much as New York. By the fourth quarter, neither could stop him.

The Cavs' All-Star forward scored 23 points and grabbed five rebounds in the Cavs' hard-fought victory after they trailed by 15. James ripped open the sleeves on his jersey during the second quarter in the midst of a 4 of 11 shooting half. He was 2 of 6 in the first quarter and his only two baskets were dunks.

James wasn't much better in the second half, shooting 5 of 12 with the extra arm room. But he took over the game in the fourth quarter.

        Rockets 119, Magic 114 (OT)

HOUSTON -- Dwight Howard paired 23 points with 14 rebounds and all five Houston starters scored in double figures as the Rockets held off Orlando in overtime at Toyota Center.

Rockets guard James Harden added 28 points and seven rebounds while Trevor Ariza and Marcus Thornton scored 19 and 18, respectively, while combining to make 6 of 11 3-pointers. Houston overcame 20 turnovers and Orlando recording 58 points in the paint.

Magic forward Evan Fournier scored a game-high 29 points while Aaron Gordon added 19 points and eight rebounds off the bench for Orlando. Tobias Harris scored 16 points.

        Suns 118, Kings 97

PHOENIX -- Brandon Knight atoned for a scoreless first half with 12 of his 17 points in the third quarter as Phoenix broke open a close game with a 20-7 run to beat Sacramento.

Eric Bledsoe led Phoenix with 19 points and Alex Len added 16 points and eight rebounds. The Suns, who hit 14 of their 23 3-pointers (61 percent), led by as many as 21 points for the third win in their last four games.

Kosta Koufas had 16 points and James Anderson and Marco Belinelli had 15 each for the Kings, who lost for the second time in as many nights without DeMarcus Cousins (Achilles tendon injury) and fell to 1-4 on the season.

        Trail Blazers 108, Jazz 92

SALT LAKE CITY -- Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum continued their early-season tear, leading Portland to a surprising victory over Utah at Vivint Arena.

Lillard, who played for nearby Weber State, put on a show for his college state, scoring a season-high 35 points. It was his second consecutive 30-point game. McCollum complemented him nicely with 27 points.

Portland improved to 3-2 while handing Utah a lopsided defeat in its home opener. The Jazz fell to 2-2 after winning two of three on a season-opening road trip.

Under bets hot in James Capers' games this season

Under bets have gone a perfect 0-4 Over/Under in all four games that NBA referee James Capers has worked so far this season. Along with Tony Brown and Karl Lane, Capers will be working Thursday's game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Chicago Bulls.

In Capers' four games, how teams are averaging 96.8 points per game while the visitors are averaging 94.5 ppg to produce a total score of 191.2. Books opened the total for the Thunder-Bulls game at 208, but that has since moved to 211.

Jazz backers loving meetings with Nuggets

The Utah Jazz have been a profitable venture in recent meetings with the Denver Nuggets, going 5-2 straight up and an impressive 6-1 against the spread in the previous seven contests.

In last season's four meetings, the Western Conference foes split their meetings but the Jazz went 3-1 ATS.

Also of note, the Under went 5-2 in those seven contests and has gone a further 6-2 in the past eight.

At present, the Jazz are being offered as 1.5-point road favorites while the total is off the board.
